If you're stuck in SJ and really want sushi, you can't go wrong with Umi. The fish was fresh and they have a number of innovative rolls on the menu.

Great sushi! Fast, friendly and relatively inexpensive. Some of the best sushi I ever had!
(4)Jason M.
First time experience here was very nice. Small clean unassuming sushi place with fast and friendly service. Fresh ingredients, perfect gyoza ( had 3 servings!) Umi roll with lobster tempura and Bob roll was very tasty.
(5)Heather P.
Lovely people, great service, huge menu with lots to choose from, including bento boxes that are huge portions for the price. Sushi without fail is some of the best I've ever eaten. Full bar with a sake menu adds value to the location.
(5)Val R.
Went here Bc we happened to be in the area. After waiting 10 min for a table, we sat and never got greeted by a server. We had ample time to look at the menu and how ridiculously high the prices are. We then decided to leave and head to Wild Ginger - a place we frequent.
(1)Mike C.
Always fresh and never disappointed! Try the Kani Salad and Shomai appetizers. I have been eating at Umi for a few years now. The service is great too!
(5)Wayne B.
Warm Saki! Awesome shrimp tempura! Hot Girl (sushi I mean and my wife!) and Jonathan Roll. Waitress / Owner - she very sweet and friendly! A must place to eat!
(5)Sarah S.
Best sushi in the south jersey area - fantastic staff and very homey environment if you dine in. YUM!
(5)Shane H.
Enjoyed the sushi. At first glance the selection seem like it would take weeks to pick a selection. A lot of fried sushi though. It was awesome to get this boat filled with our sushi to land on our dinner table. That alone made the night Recommend the banana sushi dish. Very interesting! The sake / pear martini was worth it as well. Sweet tooth was filled that day. Service: Excellent and served alcohol. Rating 4 out of 5 Stars.
(4)Amy S.
Great place for sushi! The crazy tuna roll and fireball roll were delicious. The waitress was great and offered to let us taste the red bean ice cream which was perfect in the banana fried ice cream dessert.
(4)Shane C.
Everything you could possibly ask for in a restaurant! The waitresses were super nice, the food and drinks were delivered very quickly even for a Saturday night, and everything was delicious!! The bento box was a steal for $20 and I left full. My girlfriend and I definitely have our new spot!!!

Yay! A Japanese restaurant in SJ that serves booze automatically makes me a fan. My beau & I went on a recent Sunday afternoon for a late lunch and found much to like about this unassuming place. Not only do they serve booze, but they have some nice bottles of cold sake on the menu here. I'm all for byobs, but procuring a good bottle of sake takes some extra planning that is frequently beyond me so I appreciate a sushi joint with a liquor license. The sashimi & rolls we had were very fresh and authentic. Nicely seasoned rice & presentation. They also had broiled yellowtail neck as an appetizer, which is our favorite kitchen food. It was great. The ramen was just ok. Overall though, we really enjoyed our meal and thought it was the best Japanese in SJ that we've experienced so far-outside of Sagami. Thanks fellow yelpers for the find. My tummy thanks you too.

Umi Japanese cuisine is one of the better sushi places that I've been to. I started off with the soup, it was very tasty! I had the red and white sushi for my meal. This included tuna, salmon, and yellow tail. Also very tasty. I had a pear saki tini which was INCREDIBLE. I recommend this to everyone! The restaurant is a great place for all sizes of groups and has a great atmosphere in the interior. They had a great selection of Japanese style cocktails! Such a fun place to eat.

I find myself going back every week. I'm so enjoying what I order, I keep ordering the same things... Need to expand my palate Love the nice touch of hot finger towels prior to ordering. Staff and customers are always friendly. Well guess it time for me to make my weekly visit tomorrow
(5)Anthony F.
The sushi rolls are very good. I'm not impressed with the pieces of sashimi. They are fresh but small slices.
(3)Ron B.
This would be a great sushi spot even if it wasn't in Camden County NJ, not exactly known for fresh tuna and eel, or Japanese culture. However, I loved this spot. Page after page of the standard rolls as well as dozens of specialty rolls that were outstanding. There is also an alcohol selection of American basics and also several Japanese favorites. 4 adults probably 8-10 rolls, 2 apps, 3 soups, a bottle of saki and 4 non-alcoholic drinks, under $120 including a 20% tip. Place was full but only 5 minute wait without making reservations. food served quick and tasted fresh.
(5)Heath G.
I went her for the first time after passing it at least 100 times since I've lived around here. First of all never pass a little place like this you'll never know what your missing. Second I haven't had sushi like this ever. The chefs are very nice and explains everything when I sat at the sushi bar. I have to watch it because I can seriously get used to this place (but that wouldn't be a bad thing only for my wallet) I can't comment on anything else since I've only had the sushi. The combination sushi platters are excellent. The last thing I would like to say they give you steamed towels, found out that's tradition.
(5)Jess F.
I've eaten here multiple times and they have never failed me! The menu has anything you can think of and the drinks are great too! I also suggest trying the bbq octopus.. i was scared of it at first now its a new favorite! Love love love this place! I just have to say it is very small inside. But the food makes up for it. Also most of the bad reviews on here are hard to believe... and its never noisy in there.
(5)Kat M.
Typical Japanese restaurant opened by Chinese people. I went during lunch and will not be back. The food is very meh. The fish isn't the freshest, and the rice was under seasoned. I'm not too sure why this place has such high reviews for mediocre food, but then, I realized that there aren't many choices in the area.
(2)Raul H.
Great Restaurant the food was delicious. I had a great time. I am definitely going back allot.
(5)Joanne T.
I wish they delivered again. I've had their takeout once and delivery another time and both instances were satisfying. We came here on a Monday night and it was an empty house. After we got our entree people started coming in. It seemed like the other patrons were usual customers. The waitress were familiar with them. The place itself is homey and a bit cramped but the food was good so not really complaining regarding the aesthetics. It was nice that they had sake available since we didn't really think about stopping by a liquor store. They start you off with warm towels, how nice. The shrimp tempura was really good. All i remember is it melts in your mouth good, plus it was served hot. The bf got the bento box and was fully satisfied and satiated. I had their version of chirashi and i added side of spicy sauce for dipping. Our bill was a bit expensive due to liquor. I'd def come back though.

Umi!! Where do I begin! This little gem is located Somerdale NJ & has the absolute best sushi in Jersey. The sushi is always fresh and the staff are always helpful! The plum wine is also great! You won't be disappointed Favs- The Latino roll and spicy tuna roll. Amazing!
(5)John M.
Some of the best sushi in South Jersey is here. Kevin and Jill run the restaurant and are very friendly and accommodating. They will gladly handle any special requests. The fish is fresh and prepared expertly. My favorites are the spicy salmon roll, spicy tuna roll and the eel avocado roll.
(5)Monica D.
Great service. Awesome sushi. Would give 5, but ambience lacked. Reasonably priced. Would come back.
(4)Nicola B.
Still the amazing sushi, service, and atmosphere I've come to know and love. This place is my favorite sushi place ever. I bring all my friends here to check it out and they always agree it's top notch. Jill and Kevin (owners) are wonderful people and always welcome guests warmly. Can't recommend more for quality sushi in South Jersey. Go!

I have often passed Umi on White Horse Pike. A friend lives down that way but doesn't like seafood. And so, I have glanced longingly intrigued by the utterly unassuming house-turned-sushi joint. Finally, after several months of growing desire, my brother and I spontaneously decided that p90x yoga merited sushi for lunch. On a Wednesday afternoon, a bit past lunch, Umi was practically empty. Inside, the restaurant is clean, comfortable, and cozy. Even the bathroom is nice. We sat in a booth by the window. Our waitress was excellent; she was patient, showed up when we wanted her, refilled drinks with perfect timing, and she was really a sweetheart. I had clear soup for the first time ever. How is that? I have no idea because, hello, scallions and mushrooms are amazing ingredients. While I have nothing to which to compare it, I really enjoyed it and it had a lot of flavor. The two of us split a tempura appetizer. Three long prawns in panko and broccoli, eggplant, potato, and something green that I ate. (As an aside, can someone tell me why shrimp tempura always comes in panko instead of the other tempura batter?) Then we shared a Michelle roll, which contains shrimp tempura, salmon, avocado, cream cheese inside, spicy eel sauce, crunch, and caviar, scallion on top. You know it's a legit sushi place when they have special rolls for regular customers. This roll was awesome, didn't have too much cream cheese thankfully, and was a bit on the heavier side. It also had the slightest lovely kick of spice to it. We also had the Rainbow roll, with crab stick avocado cucumber inside with salmon tuna white fish yellowtail scallion on top. This was on the lighter side and very fresh tasting. Along with the two special rolls, we had a california roll. My brother doesn't like eel (which causes me all sorts of sadface) so I am excited to go back and try some. Our bill came to about $40. We had a good time, so we left a $10 tip.
(4)Amanda L.
I have gotten sushi takeout twice now. Each time I was greeted with a friendly staff, speedy service, fair prices and excellent food. Everything tastes so fresh and is exactly as the menu describes. With such a large variety of choices on the special roll menu, you're bound to find something you fall in love with. If you're feeling adventurous, try the Jonathan roll and/or the Hot Summer roll. You honestly can't go wrong here!
(5)Andrew N.
This place is a hidden gem - I remember the first time driving by I never thought I'd find myself eating there. However, this place is AMAZING. Consistently good, never had a bad experience. Service is great, everyone is friendly. Place is like a little house, and it has a quiet ambience that I love. Feels like eating at home, in the best possible way. This place easily ranks in my top 10, a huge compliment for a place in Somerdale, NJ.

I have no idea why it has taken me this long to write a review for the Best sushi in the tri state. I have been going here for years. I am now a regular and have brought many people to Umi from Philadelphia, NYC, Florida, Delaware and they have all loved it so much they try to come back for more. I am at least there once a month. There servers and owners are friendly. The food is to good to be true, I have never had anything that I did not like from there. If it is your first time... I would suggest the Gyoza for appetizer, and bascially any specialty sushi roll ( the Godzilla and Jonathan are my favorite), the banana tempura with coconut ice cream is a must have for dessert. I would totally recommend this place to anyone. I even took my grandparents there who would always tell me I dont like sushi, I cant eat that stuff. Guess who now loves it there... yup my grandparents. They also have a full bar incase you were wondering the Lychee Martini is also a wonderful drink. Try this place out you will enjoy!

A total South Jersey sushi surprise. Who woulda thunk you'd be able to get some really excellent sushi in such an unlikely place? (Not me, that's for sure). Umi is in an undistinguished roadside house-turned restaurant right near the Lions Head Plaza in Somerdale, about 20 minutes outside of Philadelphia. It's high Yelp rating is earned not only by its well above average sushi, but by the incredibly welcoming atmosphere created by the owner, Kevin, who's also the head sushi chef. Kevin's a 5 star kinda guy originally from southeastern China who knows his stuff. He's got a very creative streak and will make you whatever you'd like; but you'd do well to follow his suggestions and specials. Given that, the smartest thing you can do (if there are just 2 of you), is to sit at the sushi bar, and watch and talk to this really interesting, really kind gentleman. We started with a salad and an order of delicious gyoza, accompanied by a large carafe of the hot house sake. Followed that up with a sushi and sashimi platter for one, supplemented by a Latino Roll ( umisushi.com/menu.php?ci… ), and of course (?), another large carafe of sake. The platter was ridiculously huge and the roll was rockin'. It was a perfect experience. And the great thing was that the fish was as fresh as Lindsay Lohan talkin' back to a DUI cop. For a casual kinda Jersey stop, this place could not have been better, so you really should check it out when you're looking for some great sushi in the area. Banzai! David-san

By the look of the place you'd never pick it, but please give it a shot! Amazing food, and a very sweet & friendly staff.
(5)Zuul B.
Best sushi i've ever had! rolls were creative and artfully made! try the bob roll! seriously it's the best!
(5)Ali N.
Used to go here all the time for great sushi. However, one day as I was getting some left-overs boxed one of the boxes they gave me had a dead cockroach in it. Immediately I felt disgusted and expressed concern to the front desk/staff. However, instead they tried to "reason" with me and tell me to ignore it, followed by random angry Japanese being yelled directed at me, and I'm not one to make a scene so I kindly said I will not be returning. If you're not grossed out however, the food and place are GREAT! Just hard to get that image out of your head after a while =/ yuck

For an unassuming little red house on White Horse Pike in a small South Jersey town, you wouldn't expect such warm lovely people serving some really amazing sushi. The love that is present in this place is very apparent when you walk in and Jill and Kevin greet you, and almost everyone else that walks in by first name. Their love extends into their sushi, which is incredibly fresh and delicious. They have a huge selection of maki, traditional rolls and special rolls, which are all delicious. Check their white board for rotating specials. Kevin and the rest of the sushi chefs are willing to make you whatever you want. Just shoot them the ingredients you want in a roll and they will make it. The kitchen also cooks up some awesome Japanese cuisine. From a simple teriyaki bento box to curry to noodles, everything is served hot and delicious in big portions, with a sides of fried spring roll and sushi roll. Jill will let you substitute anything (sometimes for a small extra cost) without even blinking an eye. LUNCH SPECIAL. Just do it. I promise. This is how I first started coming here and typically what I still come here for. Great value for the same quality sushi as the regular menu items. The great thing about this place that makes it a little different from many sushi joints in the area is that they have a full bar and a full cocktail menu with some really unique choices. Jill gets to "practice" creating these things (I would like to be there next time she is doing it!) and they are really awesome. And come with a serious kick. No really, don't have more than one martini and expect to remain sober... The number one shining quality about this place though is that their personal service with each customer goes WELL above and beyond expectations. They have accommodated so many requests of our usually very large party every single time, without blinking an eye. They will treat you like family. They have given us countless complimentary items for things that we were celebrating, it felt like they were celebrating with us. This is the type of place that during holidays I will leave them a large tip as a "thank you" gift. Really. This place is special. I wish I still lived down the street and went here every day, but now I just try to make special trips to the area to come by and visit.
(5)Pat M.
Is it the best sushi I ever had? No way BUT it def has the most unique flavors and rolls I have eating sushi. Def try the India roll... It sounds weird but the banana in the middle made this one of the best sushi rolls I have ever eaten
(5)Bryan M.
Despite the place looking small from the outside, upon going inside it opens up to show a full bar, sushi bar and even an upstairs area to fit even more guests. The staff were all very attentive and kind, the owners even came over to the table on multiple occasions to see how we were doing. However, as if the service wasn't already outstanding the food will definitely catch your attention. I had the chicken teriyaki bento box that came with spring rolls (crunchy and fresh), your choice of two different rolls, miso soup and house salad made with homemade ginger dressing. The rolls I chose were the spicy crab roll and the california roll, both of which we're fresh and delicious. All in all if you're in the area and looking for some good eats come check this place out!
(5)Nancy C.
Had lunch here with my yoga group (14 of us) The owners were really nice and accomodating. I had a beef and scallion dish and it was delicious. Friend said to try the green tea ice cream I did as well as the red bean ice cream both were very good. Owner said freezer was broke and ice cream was too soft ( it wasn't) and they "comped" 14 desserts. Very nice jesture but not necessary. We all had good food and a good time. I'll be back.
(5)G L.
This place is our first choice in the area for Japanese. Haven't had a bad meal here yet. Staff is very friendly and always seem to remember us. The woman that seats and serves you, who I believe is an owner, will even take the time to make a set of kids chopsticks with a rubber band and the chopsticks wrapper for my 2 year old. Even though he always ends up making a huge mess with them. Sushi is always fresh and delicious. My wife's favorite is the beef teriyaki. It's made with good quality beef and is always cooked just how she asks it to be. Mine is the beef negimaki which is scallions wrapped in beef and sautéed. The lunch menu is a good value and we always leave stuffed.
(5)Nir G.
What can I say? It's a nice sushi joint but it's in Somerdale. I went there with my wife to celebrate Valentine's day on Friday. The place is nice and cozy. What do you get when you mix deep south Jersey with a sushi bar and a real bar on a Friday night? Hipster clientele that are loud and obnoxious. While we had our meal we witnessed the following situations 1) two women sitting next to each other at the sushi bar got into a cat fight; 2) one of the women freaked out while slurring "fuck you all" over and over again; 3) drunk woman with tattoo sleeves drinking and talking really loudly all night about subject ranging from the WWF to farts 4) a couple brought their infant to the restaurant, and he was constantly crying. Etc, etc Overall the food was great! I guess this is what you get in the heart of south jersey.
(3)Kajal K.
truly one of the best sushi places ive ever been to... and i LOVE sushi. so many amazing choices. my husband and i have never been disappointed. i especially enjoy the 2014 roll - it's not on the menu but it was a special one time and they make it for me everytime i ask - shrimp, tuna, and jalepeno! happy eating :)
(5)Gabrielle R.
I've passed this place every day on my way to work for the past few years. I finally tried it. Now I don't know how I will pass it every day without stopping for sushi.
(5)Melissa H.
I met a friend here for lunch about two weeks. The place was empty, to my surprise. We were there a little after the lunch rush, but it was still around 1:00 or 2:00 PM. Both of us had sushi platters. Service was decent, and I enjoyed my food. Fresh, authentic sushi was exactly what I wanted that day. I hope their business picks up!
(4)Grace L.
I've driven by this restaurant many times and never had the guts to go in. My brother found this restaurant on yelp and we went to celebrate my younger sister's birthday this past Saturday. The exterior is nothing compared to the food and ambiance inside the restaurant. Our party of 6 was seated by the sushi bar. We all had hot green tea (delicious) and ordered the green and avocado salads as starters. We all loved the ginger dressing (which was on the slightly sweet side but nonetheless delicious!)! My father ordered the Nabeyaki Udon (Chicken, vegtable egg w. noodle and 2 pieces shrimp tempura in the soup) and the rest of us shared a sushi boat. While I can't remember everything we ordered, we definitely ordered a Rising Sun Roll, a Daddy Roll, a Debbie roll, 2 spicy Yellowtail rolls, and a Rainbow Roll. The Rising Sun Roll was delicious! Right amount of shrimp tempura and spicy tuna to cover all the bases. The spicy Yellowtail rolls were also on point. From what I recall, the spicy rolls could have been a 'teeeeny' bit more spicier but in general, everything was on point. I posted some pictures of the sushi boat, the noodle dish and a separate picture of the Rising Sun Roll. The staff was very attentive and nice. The restaurant and bathroom (one unisex bathroom downstairs) was clean. This place thoroughly satisfied my sushi craving and should hold me over for a while. If you're looking for a clean, friendly place to eat fresh sushi, this is the place to go.
(4)Maricel B.
Great sushi, great drinks, good service, wonderful ambiance. Can't ask for a better night! We tried the Hot Pepper Tuna appy which had a good kick & sauce to it but the tuna could b a bit thicker or sliced differently because the pieces were falling apart but that would be my only complaint. My BF & I ended up with a sushi boat that housed our sushi order. Such a beautiful presentation that my BF wanted to take the boat home! Lol. We had the Tiger Roll & Eagle Roll from their special roll menu. So delicious that I didn't need to dip it in soy. The lobster tempura in the Tiger Roll & the shrimp tempura in the Eagle Roll was crunchy & warm. We also had a Boston roll, Tekka Maki roll & a Salmon Skin roll. All were very good. Fresh sushi grade tuna & lovely smokiness to the Salmon Skin. My BF decided to drink Corona instead of sake or Japanese but he said why should he discriminate. Lol. I had the Umi Pear Tini which basically tasted like a Jolly Rancher. Bottom line, I could have drank a pitcher. To end our meal we both had ice cream. Chocolate for my BF & Green Tea for me. Lovely way to end the night. It's a lovely place that serves great sushi with a full service bar. The ambiance is casual but intimate & there are even semi-secluded spots to have a quiet (or loud) dinner with your guest(s). Last time I was there was when it was Pepino's & was sad to see that place close but I am extremely happy to have tried this place because I'm quite sure that it is one of the best sushi spots in the area.

Definitely not the best sushi outside of Philly, apart from what everyone else says. First of all, the service here was nothing special, especially since the place was pretty empty (Sunday of Memorial Day weekend). Despite the lack of customers, the waitress forgot to bring us warm hand towels. It also took her a while to come back and check on my drink refill. For an appetizer, my mom and I split a treasure island, which had good texture thanks to the seaweed. Pretty good but pricey for the portion. For our sushi we had an avocado roll, a diamond roll, a russell roll, and a nikki yuki roll. The overwhelming problem with this sushi was it had WAY WAY WAY too much rice. I want to eat fish and other yummy sushi fillings, not a pile of empty carbs! The roll we enjoyed the most was the diamond roll because it had an excellent mixture of texture and flavors. We also enjoyed the smoked salmon in our rusell roll, and the nikki yukki roll was underwhelming. If you're looking for amazing sushi in South Jersey, try Singapore in Mount Laurel or Kabuki in Cherry Hill. These places are absolutely worth it.
(3)Joyce R.
After hearing wonderful reviews from friends, I decided to check it out for myself. And, I must say what was being said was correct. The place is small and very clean. There is a step that you must watch going in & out of the place. Be advised, you are warned. It's so apparent that they've named a special sushi roll for it. LOL! I was greeted right away by a lovely waitress who sat me down and brought be a hot towel. I love this ritual in Japanese restaurants. Why don't others do this? After I wiped my hands, she came back to offer me a drink. And, since there is a full bar and specials every night, I thought I'd take advantage of some sake. There is a wide selection. A flight would have been a nice touch. I ordered the Pear. It was served in a rock glass, ice cold. To say it was delicious is an understatement. It was so good I ended up ordering another later. I started with the wasabi shumai. This was a suggestion from the waitress and it was good and hot. I had the Tommy Roll and the Godzilla Roll. I absolutely loved the Tommy roll. The Godzilla roll was good, too. The prices are very good. Nothing was over priced, like some sushi places in more congested areas. I will definitely go back for more!
(4)Alex L.
Driving up up to Umi for the first time gave a feeling of apprehension as it looks more like a corner bar than a reputable sushi restaurant. However, do not let the outside facade fool you. The inside has cute decorum, but the food is what really makes this a wonderful little spot. Being somewhat of a sushi snob and having spent much time in the best sushi restaurants in Los Angeles, I found the quality of the food to be among the very best of those from the West Coast. On top of everything else the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. This is a gem of a restaurant for South Jersey. Oh...and give the Godzilla Roll a try; it's unique and fantastic.

Best Anti- Cinco-de-mayo-birthday-dinner-spot ever. Went here on a whim after an exhausting running around kinda day. Now, i preface this review with the prior to set the mood: I'm exhausted, I wanna eat yummy num-nums and I don't really wanna wait very long. And I want a drink. And I don't want to really wait for that either. Umi's, my friends, delivers on all of the above. I called (like the responsible adult i am) to make reservations and the woman who took them obliged, though she noted we really shouldn't have trouble getting a table. We arrive and are whisked away to our table set before the bar. See? They even knew before I arrived what I needed! That's what I call service. Anyway, our server took our orders then made our drinks and smiled the whole time like we were her new best friends. And then she promptly disappeared to let us enjoy our drinks and appetizers, and then quickly thereafter dropped off our rolls and let us eat in piece. Speak of which: miso soup=yum! IF YOU GO HERE YOU MUST TRY THE DRAGON ROLL. And the Spicy Tuna. And the Salmon Roll. And (if my boyfriend is to be believed) you should also ingest the Philly Rolls. Pretty much everything we ate was fantastic. Now I mentioned earlier that this was a birthday dinner. At no point did anyone in our party directly inform our server that it was a birthday celebration but our server apparently overheard me maturely using "it's my birfday" as sound reasoning for why I got to eat the last piece of the dragon roll. She then stealthily used this information to spring green tea and red bean ice cream with tempura-ed bananas (YUM!) on our table at no cost. All in all, this is another place I highly recommend. Go there. Now. Close your computer and go get some super sushi. And yes, that is a direct order.
(5)Han K.
Absolutely loved it! I've had my fair share of sushi experiences, and this place definitely met my expectations. The service was impeccable. Cozy, casual atmosphere. Huge menu--over 50 specialty rolls to choose from! The prices were very reasonable, and everything we ordered was absolutely delicious and fresh! The green salad & mochi for dessert were both sooo tasty and also crazy cheap! We left very satisfied, with smiles on our faces and plans to definitely come back again soon.
(5)Rabia Q.
My friends and I are regulars here and I must say, this is one of the best sushi restaurants that I have ever been to. They have very friendly staff, orders are filled quickly, great ambiance and the food is delicious for the price you pay. The servers are wonderful. A group of 10 friends and I went for dinner one night and a couple peoples nearby/recent birthdays came up. At the end of our meal the server brought over three large servings of ice cream with tempura banana; on the house! It was such a surprise and such a wonderful gesture of kindness and excellent customer service. We do not frequent Umi ALL the time but whenever we go, the servers recognize us. They even know my order :-) If you "like" them on Facebook, you get to use their discounts. I would highly recommend Umi to everyone!
(5)Jim B.
This is the best Sushi place in the immediate area. Price is fantastic, great quality and generous. When I moved into the area a year ago I immediately sought out a good sushi place. I did not have to look far because I found Umi. It really is great quality and very generous in many respects: they include a nice tuna/california/or salmon roll with your Sushi regular or sushi deluxe dinner along with the regular miso soup or salad. Also, when I order sushi a' la carte they always have what I ask for when trying something new. I'm actually surprised that such a great sushi place is in the Somerdale area! They also have a full bar and feature different drinks. Drinks are generous. Service is friendly and I often use this place for take-out.

I went here for a late lunch. On this busy main street and ugly looking house, it's actually kind of pleasantly nice inside. This hole in the wall place is my new fav. jap. rest. being new to the area (minus that it is not handicap accessible- dislike). The service was excellent, but it's because we were the only ones there and sat at the bar. I had their special: Pepper Seared Tuna Spring Salad. Wow- it had mangos, and this rich dressing. It was to die for, but next time i would ask them to easy up on the dressing. By the end of the meal, you could feel the kick in your mouth. The sushi and nigiri was also fresh, and reasonably priced- not cheap, but not really expensive. This is one of the few rest. in the area that doesn't combine their japanese only cuisine with chinese food. Thank god!! Therefore, they do one thing and they do it right. I'm going for their oysters and dinner menu next time!

Came here on a Saturday for lunch, but the place was almost empty. The waitress was very nice, and let me sit wherever I wanted. I chose a very comfortable booth on the left side of the restaurant. I ordered chicken teriyaki, which came with a choice of miso soup or salad. I chose the miso soup. The soup was hot and was very good--lots of miso flavor. The chicken teriyaki was a large portion, slathered with a little too much teriyaki sauce. However, the chicken was extra tender and delicious, and the teriyaki sauce wasn't too sweet, so it turned out to be one of the best chicken teriyakis I've had in a long time. I'm sorry I didn't have a chance to try the sushi, but I'm sure it's very good here. It was kinda expensive ($16+ for just the chicken teriyaki and the miso soup) so it loses 1 star for that, but the food is worthy of a 5.

The Sushi is very fresh. I got to watch the chef sitting @ the bar, he's an artist. Service was great. The only complaint is that, I have no interest in other people's conversations yet I had to listen, not sure if this is an acostic issue or two different tables where people felt they're just so damn interesting that they had to yell. Will probably just continue to get take out.

Umi is oddly located on the White Horse Pike, so it's deceiving how good it is. I expected just another average take out sushi place but I was pleasantly surprised. Umi is one of my favorite sushi places around. I would recommend trying their Fireball Roll.

I lived in Japan and am really picky when it comes to quality Japanese. This place is my top pick and will continue to be my first choice for sushi! Try the Godzilla Roll with Banana! I call it the Mattzilla!
(5)Sara G.
By far not the best sushi I've ever had, but by far the best sushi in the local area. They do a good job with specialty rolls and the staff is attentive and friendly.

Best sushi in the area! Nice quiet atmosphere, decent pricing, nice staff, & a bar! Short review but no more needs to be said...5 stars!

Don't go to Umi. You will be disappointed with other sushi for the rest of your life. My family has been going to Umi ever since we discovered it three or so years ago, and I have put off this shining review for too long. We try to go here at least once a month. I am generally hard to please, but this place takes the cake and scores a perfect 5. 1) The Food. Everything is absolutely top notch. You pay food court prices for luxury big-city sushi quality. The fish has always been super fresh, clean, and well prepared. The sushi chefs know what they are doing. I've only had non-sushi once, and it was good. My grandma, who is not a sushi fan, has enjoyed her non-sushi meals when she comes along. Try the Godzilla Roll. 2) The Service. From the second you walk in, you are greeted by Jill, one of the most genuinely cheery waitress/hostess/owner(?) Very rarely will you wait for a table, even on the weekends. She remembers you after a few visits, and is always ready to please. Food comes out quickly, drinks even quicker. No hesitation in accommodating large groups when we bring lots of friends. 3) The Booze. Umi has a liquor license, which means you can get sake, wine, beer, and cocktails. These prices aligh well with the rest of the menu, A Japanese beer runs about $4, domestics are a bit cheaper. The real star of the bar are the house cocktails. OH MAN! There are usually specials on the front board, and I have never been disappointed. Jill also pulls bar tending duty, and she mixes a mean drink. The only downside is she errs on the strong side, so you will need a DD if you plan to drink more than two. These cocktails usually come in around $8. 4) The Atmosphere. Umi is inside an old red italian restaurant, which was just a big house before that. The inside is nicely decorated, super clean, and cozy. It is rarely crowded (I think they do a lot of take-out and office lunch business). Tables are well spaced for privacy. There is also a sushi bar if you want to watch the chefs in action. Every time we've gone someplace else (even places that have excellent reputations), we've felt like we were paying more money for lower quality sushi.

Lots of places to eat SUSHI but this is one of the best! We go here all the time. Drinks are good too!!
(5)Shel K.
Good service, good sushi, good drinks. I can't think of other sushi restaurants around the area with all three! Moonstone Plum Sake and Lychee martini is a favorite.

First visit last night, the owner Kevin came right over to great us and find out what we liked. He spoke to us for several minutes and when our sushi and sashimi arrived it was obvious he had actually listened. We rate this the best we have had in South Jersey and would hold it's own even in NYC. The staff was attentive and gracious. We will be back often, and be sure to tell friends. A must dining experience. Five stars.

Umi is still, by far, my favorite place to go for sushi in south Jersey. Over the past year I've pretty much taken every friend, boyfriend, acquaintance in the area to this fantastic little restaurant... because I know they'll have a great experience. And because I could eat at Umi every week. I get excited just thinking about going here. You honestly can't go wrong with any of the menu options. Every type of fish is delicious and fresh, every day of the week. The salmon, especially, just melts in your mouth. Overwhelmed by the options? Tell the staff what you like and they can help you decide. Ask Jill, my favorite hostess/waitress ever. She's so sweet and attentive, and she remembers what I like (which to me is going above & beyond the call of duty). After months of stubbornly ordering sashimi every time, I finally tried the maki rolls - my favorites are anything spicy, and Umi doesn't disappoint. Somehow, they manage to prepare a spicy yellowtail roll in which the mayo and spices don't mask the flavor of the sushi itself. Very impressive. As a bonus: the chefs put so much attention to detail into preparing their dishes. Last night they constructed a Japanese tower out of carrot for my sashimi plate! It was a tiny work of art. Their meticulous preparation really shows how much they care about their work. For sushi in south Jersey, Umi is worth a visit... which will inevitably lead to a lifetime of visits. (Live in Philly? Come here anyway. If you overindulge on sake, I'm sure some of us have couches you can crash on.)

Love this place, some of the best sushi in the area and at a decent price. I'm a big fan of Saki with my sushi, and this is one of the only sushi places around that serves alcohol, which is a nice option. I'm a fan of both their standard sushi/sashimi, and their special rolls. My only complaint is the large number of options available for those rolls, sometimes it's too much choice! One of my favorite aspects is the friendly staff, after just a couple of times going in they will remember you and for special occasions they've even brought out free desserts for my table. It's the little things like this that make we want to go back to a restaurant.

I love Umi. It's not super cheap, but not overpriced at all and in my opinion they have the best sushi around, especially their spicy tuna roll. The staff are always super nice and helpful if you're with people who aren't familiar with Sushi.

Family run in non descript building on the White Horse Pike. No atmosphere and ok sushi. just didn't leave a great impression. Staff was very nice and wish I liked it more.

Holy Santa Claus sh*t is this excellent sushi! This was the freshest sushi I have EVER had in my 2 years of eating it. WOW - I think the fish were splashing in the back or something ; ) I had the "Fashion Roll", "The Boston", "Sweetpotato tempura" and "Spicey Scallop". Killer deliciously tasty. The staff were very, very friendly and know how to do 'it' right. Great presentation (LOVED the long boat our sushi was served on and the after dinner fresh orange doo-dad). They also boast a ton of drinks and almost tempted this non-drinker to have one! I will most definitely be going back!!!!! YUMMY!!!!!!

5 stars is not enough! My wonderful wife took me to Umi for the first time. It is truly a family business as other reviewers have pointed out. Our normal sushi place has been closed for renovation for 8 months. Now that we found Umi I don't think we will ever go back to our old place. The food is above average and the service is excellent. Plus they serve alcohol. Having a Sapporo with dinner really hits the spot! Nothing is better than the owners remembering who you are.

Great food ,fresh, friendly, and authentic ingredients...descent sake selection, and all fish clean, and fresh.I am glad to live so close...
(4)Jay B.
My first time here. I'm sure the cooked food is great, however I ordered the sushi deluxe and I had 2 or 3 pieces (nigiri) that were not fresh at all. A little disappointed because I heard great reviews. Dessert is delicious, wish the banana tempura was a little sweeter. But other than the place has a homey feeling to it and the workers are wonderful and very accommodating.

For a small place in Somerdale, NJ, they put out some really good sushi at reasonable prices. I have been here twice in the past two months and each time, the sushi was excellent in quality and taste. I am so glad to have found someplace relatively close to home that i can eat quality sushi without having to go over the bridge. I also love that they have a full bar too. I will definitely be back.
(5)J M.
This is Somerdale, NJ's best kept secret. I love this place. Great staff, spectacular service and is willing to try new things with sushi... on a Pringle? Don't mind if I do!! nom, nom, nom. You are doing yourself a disservice by passing this place by.

Best sushi ever had, expanded menu online for take out highly recommend
(5)Elliott C.
delicious and adventurous sushi! very good rolls. they REALLY get creative with the combinations! not being a big wasabi fan precludes me from trying them all, but my friends absolutely love them. plus, it's one of the few restaurants in SJ that serve alcohol! great imported beer.

I must say after hearing so much about this restaurant I am highly disappointed. We went there for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and the place was barely busy. We waited for about 10 minutes for the server to come and bring us menus and another ten to see if we were ready. Although the menu had a lot of specialty rolls there were a lot of things that I expected to see on a Japanese menu that were not there. No agedtofu and other Japanese staples. The gyoza was okay but nothing too spectacular. I was quite excited to see uni on the menu but the waitress informed me there was none when I asked for it. My ikura sushi did not taste as fresh as I've had it elsewhere. Also, all three of my spicy maki rolls lacked in flavor. I was happy to see that they serve Sapporo beer but was too afraid to order it and be told that they had none like the uni. There was nothing wrong with Umi but there was nothing to write home about either. I'll stick to Sagami or Kabuki.

The sushi was good but dont bother with anything else. It was all pretty tasteless. Although the service was good and they were friendly It is not enough to keep me coming back.

SO good. I have been looking for a good sushi place since moving to Philly 6 years ago. This place is awesome. Try the tuna pizza appetizer.
(5)Matt M.
Great food! Try the hamachi Kama appetizer. Grilled yellowtail collar. I get it every time. They have a full bar, and the hibachi dinners are a solid choice.

For years I've been going to Sagami in Collingswood and the food is great there no doubt. However, the wait can be killer at times which is the reason why I'm ecstatic to have found Umi Japanese Cuisine. The sushi and sashimi are very fresh and the sushi rice is perfectly seasoned. The service is wonderful there as well. Avoid the crowds and come to this restaurant. You won't be disappointed.

Went during a weeknight and was fairly empty. Appeared to be a one man show - cook and server. Very friendly and accommodating but sushi was not what everyone raves it to be.
(2)Eric D.
Great experience at Umi. Plum sake and avocado salad were both good choices. Samuel roll was a huge special with interesting presentation. Waitress was a sweetheart. I plan on going back again soon despite it not being close to home.

Best casual Japanese in NJ.
(5)Melissa A.
This IS as good as it gets, but it is beyond good. I tried it when they first opened, because they are so close to where I live. I have pretty much forsaken all other sushi places and they know what I order, even! Very attentive and knowledgable staff, with a passion forn fresh seafood. I heart UMI
(5)Lori Z.
Love it! Take out or eat-in, delicious food. The atmosphere is cozy and clean. The staff is so friendly and helpful. The sushi is fresh and flavorful. The yasai gyoza is yummy! I love vegetarian sushi and they will make a custom roll without hesitation. The combination of cucumber, avocado, and asparagus is one of my all-time favorites. The sweet potato roll is also exceptional. My husband really loved the sushi deluxe, for all of you traditional sushi eaters. The lychee martini, umi dream martini, and mojito are all great. Go and enjoy!

OK now honestly this place is great! you have to check it out if you are ever in the somerdale area. its a very well kept secret but here it is the secret is out. The food is spectacular and the service is outstanding! I am a very big fan of sushi and I have eaten at a lot of them. For some unexplaninable reason the food just tastes so fresh. and they have a very intersting menu that is diffrent from other asian dinners. it is alittle pricey but well worth it. best time to go for sushi is 1130-300 M-F for there lunch specials thats when you get the best for your buck. Try the tempura and the Katsu chicken with lemon and brownsause. also there sushi sizes are pretty big and not small like some places. you order there any 3 rolls lunch special it will fill you up and its only like 13 bucks. enjoy and have fun. you wont regret it. also there is a private booth you can take a special some one that is closed off to the rest of the resturant covered by a cloth. DONT bring the kids this is a very nice place for a dates and maybe a buisness party.
