I stopped here for lunch by chance. I had a great meal with great service at a reasonable price. I love the Mexican music and atmosphere. I've been to the one east Hanover for dinner. That one is great as well.

Happen to be passing through and stopped for lunch. The food was ok, nothing special. Service and decor was great.

This was our first time here. It has been open a few months. Very festive as you walk in. A little confusion before settling in at the bar for a few Margarita's. They were good. Extensive menu of Mexican favorites. The guacamole is very good as is the salsa with chips. Three of us had enchiladas, chicken and shrimp. Pretty good. One member had grilled steak to perfection with two enchiladas, one was a mole which was very different. The re fried beans were maybe the best I ever had. They had some cheese layered into them. The service was very good and the prices very reasonable. We will go back.

Best Mexican food in Western Morris County. I was so happy to finally find a great, non-chain restaurant that served delicious food in a wonderful atmosphere. I've been here half a dozen times in the past 2 months, including on my birthday where I was serenaded by the house mariachi band. I highly recommend the Ultimate and Blue Moon margaritas, the guacamole (so fresh!), and the chicken tacos. My dining companions and I have also enjoyed the quesadillas, steak fajitas, chicken burritos, cheese enchiladas, and burritos verde.

Listen up this place is great. Just know if u go on a Saturday ur gonna wait this place is packed. I love the enchiladas. They also have some great tequilas that are not the milk in the fridge varieties. Great value

Atmosphere! Check Great Ritas! Double check Service was awesome, food was good and they have a roving mariachi. Good!

Very bad food. Rather go to Dover which is just 15 mins & have good mexican food and lot of choices with ofcourse BYOB. Please do not waste time going here. High price n bad quality food. Worst mexican ever

Well, disappointing service can in fact change it all. Food? Decent. Nothing amazing. How about that service? Non-existent. The kicker is that this place was empty at 3:30pm today, when 3 of us visited. Server was initially attentive, however after I requested a refill of my soda, everything stopped. I wondered if a giant tortilla had in fact landed upon the entire staff, but that was not the case. There was no back to the table visit at all to ask how everything was, if we needed anything, etc. not sure if someone on the staff was breaking the candy crush game record on their cell phone, yet attempting to even check out was like sneaking over the Berlin Wall. Won't be back. Sorry.

I've eaten here several time and continue to go back. It's pretty good Mexican food especially for the area and is a good alternative to driving all the way to my other favorite Mexican place, Jose Tejas on 46. A solid place for good food in a smaller cozy restaurant but nothing crazy special!

    (3)
  • Larry W.

Grilled catfish special was awesome. Usual clean bright surroundings and upbeat service.

  • Dan N.

Excellent tacquitos, rice, refried beans. Had Shrimp Don Jose - lots of big, fresh shrimp in garlic and mushrooms. Delicious. Wife had a combo with a taco, burrito and enchilada. Healthy portion size and all very good. Green salsa is very, very tasty. Try it out. Full bar as well.

    (5)
  • Clara R.

The Mexican food is okay. I'm not a fan of their margaritas. The menu is pretty cheap so you get what you pay for. Our server would approach our table while talking on his phone, which was a little odd.

  • Brenda M.

By far the best tasting, authentic Mexican food around . The atmosphere is warm and the decor is colorful and inviting. The servers are always pleasant and attentive. The overall value is exceptional and the drinks are fabulous!

  • Dennis L.

Overall: Good for a quick bite if you are in the area but don't expect amazing. There are much more authentic Mexican restaurants ou there. Casa Maya in Gillete being one the best,. If that is what you are looking for, pass on Don Jose. If you are looking for some place close with decent food that this would be a good stop. Break Down: Drinks: The free nachos were OK. The Salsa was excellent. I had two frozen margaritas, the first was good, the second seemed like it had less tequila in it. Water was good. Appetizer: The jalapeno poppers tasted like they were from Costco. Main Course: I was very pleased with the enchiladas that I ordered. They tasted very much like the big chain Mexican places which I like sometimes.

  • Greg K.

If you are looking for good, authentic Mexican style food, this is it. I have been to both locations over a several year period and have never been disappointed. You have to try it for yourself. I have eaten here over 100 times and never been disappointed. It can get very busy for dinner so expect service to be slower but still above average.

    (5)
  • Richard M.

Good food. Service is sub-par. I will never eat here ever again and will not recommend this place to anyone I know. Long waits for server to take our order as well as extended wait time to get our check. The server chased us down in the parking lot to accost us for a larger tip when we left a minimal tip on the table due to the poor service. Not the kind of behavior I expect or want to encourage in a wait staff. I would recommend Claudio's in Landing. The food and service there are 1000% better.

We have been wanting to try Don Jose since we pass it often, and when we walked in the door today we were slapped in the face with it (in a good way). Bright and colorful, so be prepared! The price was right, the food was fantastic. Standard Mexican-American fare, but made properly and with really fresh ingredients. The chips and salsa were awesome, served right away, and the margarita was sweet and salty - not too much alcohol. More than one and I'm sure this lightweight would have felt the effects. We shared the cheese appetizer, and it was delicious. I had the shrimp fajitas for my entree, and the shrimp were large and seasoned perfectly. I didn't even use the tortillas. SO much food on the plate with rice, beans, tomatoes, onions, guacamole, sour cream... My husband had the chicken burrito, and he said it was tasty. Like I said enough food, and freshly made. I didn't have room for the fried ice cream, but one of these days when nothing else will do I'll head back. The only reason it got four stars was because there was nothing unique about the food, and my husband wasn't impressed with the beer selection. They tout a selection of 10 Mexican beers, but it's nothing special. Also, it's not a large place, and if there are more than a few families, it's going to be packed and noisy. We went at 11:30 am mid-week and were spared that.

Had lunch and dinner while in Mt. Olive on business. The Chicken Chimichanga was one of the best I've ever eaten. Their salsa is just ok and their cheese queso was just ok as well. It also tasted like there might be coffee or something in their refried beans. Overall it was good. I would definitely return for the Chimi.

I don't know why this place only gets 3 stars! It's better than A-Ok, it's probably the best Mexican food around! For us, it is one of our go-to restaurants and it never disappoints! When we go to Don Jose, we are always pleasantly greeted. There is a large team of servers that never leave us stranded and always give us the best service we can possibly get! The owner is always there and he even chips in making us feel welcomed and taken care of. The chips and salsa are addicting! The food is authentic and tasty. If we order an appetizer, we usually get the queso fundido, it's chorizo and cheese in a skillet, you can't go wrong! My favorite is the steak pueblo and my boyfriends favorite is the chicken guadalajara. We usually always order these dishes when we go, but we feel that we are missing out on other dishes, so we have been ordering others to try them out. We recently tried the blackened snapper fajitas and the chicken garlic arceo. The snapper and chicken were both juicy and flavorful. Both were delicious and worth ordering! The East Hanover location is also a great place, but the Netcong location serves alcohol. Both locations are worth trying!

Came here with a small group to get some tacos. After moving west from Clifton, I was hoping I could get some good mexican food since it was so abundant in Passaic county. Not overly impressed. A pitcher of margaritas was either 32 or 34 bucks. Pretty steep, Tasted like all margarita mix. The prices for drinks are not in the menu, should have been the first sign of trouble. Food was alright, not great. I think I will head into Dover next time.

  • Cristal M.

When I walked in, I was pleasantly surprised with all of the bright colored decor. It really set the mood for a good time. The service was excellent, and the food was pretty good. The salsa and chips, that were brought out immediately, were awesome. Just the right amount of spice and not too liquidy either. I ordered the shrimp fajitas and was glad to see healthy sized shrimp on my plate. The food came out fairly fast and was quite satisfying. I would definitely recommend it!

  • Veronica L.

The food is pretty good but the service is awful. The staff is rude and not very attentive. I still eat at this restaurant because the food is pretty decent but it's not the best Mexican place around. All in all, just okay.

    (3)
  • Jamie Z.

Chicken enchiladas were so bland! Margaritas were weak! The service was decent. We will not be back.

Just discovered it a few months ago. They never disappoint. Other folks I have spoken to say they love Don Jose too. A little pricey but pretty much worth it. Best guacamole ever!

Thumbs down sadly. Poor service, NO bad service, bland food,,,sad. But on a brighter note the beer was cold (when finally received). Guys work harder,,,we REALLY want a good Mex place in the area,,,oh and please clean your menus,,,,dirty,,sticky and ewy. Hope they read this....and make changes!!!!! If possibile I would give half a star,,,FYI

While the service is terrible, I always enjoy the food! Everything I've had is always delicious. I recommend giving it a go at least once!

    (3)
  • Amanda B.

Amazing. I have lived here all my life and sad that I haven't tried this place until now. As soon as you walk in you see the cutest decor! We were seated right away and served chips and salsa as soon as we were seated. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive and the food was amazing!! Some Items I feel are a lil pricey especially of you get an alcoholic beverage but it will be worth it! My husband and I will definitely come here again!

  • Ken E.

I think this is a great place. Only started going about six months ago; but, I've been back quite a few times. I think the food is excellent. Their ceviche is outstanding and the steak fjitas are over the top. Guacamole is def homemade and very good along with their chips & salsa. Never made it to dessert which is a good thing I guess. It's a family business with a lot of regulars and once they recognize you they start remembering what you like and how you like it. Bartender, Dave, is a nice guy to chat with and gives great menu advice. Definitely recommend.

    (4)
  • Joe T.

Very poor service. Each time we try to go we end up waiting more than 30 minutes, even on slow nights. Food is decent for NJ Mexican food, but not worth the wait and poor service.

  • Stephanie C.

So the ambiance was great, the apps were delish, the sangria was good as well, however the entrees (bc trying 2 times wasn't enough) were meh. Bland. That's all.

  • JC R.

+4 stars: service / decor -1 star: originality of menu This is standard fare Mexican. Margarita's are good as well as chips and salsa. Main dishes are decent, though the recipes are geared for the average American palette. I dream that one day someone wil

I called in to place a pick up order. The gentleman I spoke with sounded both confused and rude. Straight up refused to put green sauce on my chimichanga but agreed to give me a side of it. Not sure why they couldn't pour it on top but could pour it into a sauce cup. I've NEVER had a restaurant tell me flat out "no" when asking for a social request. Also, as a server myself, I'd never tell a guest no I can't do something so simple. He also told me it would be ready to be picked up in 5 minutes. Impressive or a worrisome sign I may be getting pre cooked garbage? Never asked me for my name or number, I had to offer it to him. Not sure how he was going to know who was picking up what but whatever. I arrived at this (the netcong) location 15 minutes later and they didn't have my order. Turns out I was given the number for the east hanover location but I would've never known that since I wasn't told or asked if I was calling the correct location. Again, whatever. Placed my order with the server inside here and low and behold, she was able to put the green sauce directly on my chimichanga with no haste or problems and everyone I spoke with here was pleasant. Food was extremely hot when we arrived home except for the chips. I'm a big fan of tortilla chips but these were just eh. Didn't taste fresh. Like any other yellow corn tortilla chip honestly. No salt either which was disappointing. Salsa was a bit too spicy for me but I liked the textures and consistency of it. My chimichanga was good. Not bad but not great. I really wasn't happy about the fact that it was thrown on top of the rice cuz I prefer my food to be separated but that's just me. A little on the greasy side which I guess is to be expected of something deep fried. Received beans were tasty. Moms beef burritos were tasty too. I like that they use ground beef but wish it were specified on the menu. Some places use shredded or pulled beef. Either way, I was a fan of the ground beef. All in all we got chips and salsa, a chimichanga dinner, and burritos dinner. A bit too pricey in my opinion. Paid $35 for the order to be taken out. Next time I think I'll take the 20 minute trip to Jose Tejas where I can get free (hot and freshly made) chips and salsa and pay less than $20 (including tip) for a similar meal.

I had a great meal at Don Jose Mexican Restaurant last night. Their restaurant made salsa and tortilla chips were outstanding. I had the red snapper Veracruz which was excellent and a bottle of Corona. I would definitely go back to Don Jose!

This is another great local place. The food is awesome although I only eat one - which is the shrimp fajita. My whole family loves this dish and we get it regularly. I've also tried this sangria which is awesome and the service is great. It's a little noisy but a very fun environment especially on Saturday night when the Marriott she trio strolls from table to table entertaining us. Only complaint is always a line to get in on the weekend. I guess that's good news for them

We've eaten in and enjoyed take out. Everything we've had has been very good. From the chorizo app to the desserts.

  • R B.

It's okay. It's reasonably priced and local for me. I can bring my kid here for taco night and not spend a fortune. The food is... Meh. The chips are cold, but I like the salsa. I think much of the food comes from the microwave. I travel the country for work and have had some truly amazing tex-mex, and this isn't one of those places. But, I've always found the service to be fine. Grab a beer and a burrito. It still beats a chain rest.

    (3)
  • Nicole G.

I've been here so many times and never had a bad meal. Everything I've ordered has been delicious! Te enchilada szuisas (I think that's how you spell it!?) is my favorite dish! Their green sauce is phenomenal! I've been to other Mexican places like Taco of the Town in Sussex which is good too but the flavors are just so much more developed at don Jose's! The many different fruit flavored frozen margaritas are also a delicious treat! And Id you want to finish with a great dessert get the sweet chimichanga!

    (5)
  • Melissa D.

While the food is always pretty good the service is terrible. Our table of 3 had 4 errors on our order and we were charged for things that were never brought. I heard several other tables around us with complaints as well, and when we tried to talk to the manager we were completely ignored. Definitely taking a break from this place, and I recommend you do too, until their service gets up to a better standard.

Great food, great service and great prices. Ended up eating the ceviche salad as an appetizer, it was amazing. We wanted to try the flan but we were too full from our main meal. Looking forward to going again.

I'm writing this review before the food came out, but since the mojito pitcher and Mexican band have already showed up, 4 stars is a guarantee. My advice is mojitos and La Bamba... Great vibe, great service.

  • Diane D.

Came for dinner on 5/6/14 the day after cinco..the place was packed! We had to wait 10 mins before being seated, no big deal..chips and salsa came quickly after we were seated..we ordered the guacamole appetizer which was really good but I thought was a tad small portion wise..I had 2 margaritas on the rocks and they were very good!! As for the food I had the veggie fajitas-I loved them although in my opinion they were not the typical veggie fajitas..I think they may have ran out of normal veggies because of the cinco rush? It mostly broccoli and cauliflower and carrots which is very odd for veggie fajitas..I love any veggies so I liked it but I can see other customers not enjoying it..anyways I was very happy with the meal! The food came out within like 10 mins of ordering!! I will come back!

I've eaten here a number of times as well as the E. Hanover location (which is BYOB). Last night I had the Enchiladas Mole as did others in our party. Very tasty I like their table salsa, which has a nice bite to it, where you might want something more mild for kids. The service was fast and courteous last night, which was great considering how mobbed they were. The margaritas are decent and they have Dos Equis Amber and Lager on tap. Best to come early as their is always a line.

We have been regular at the NetCong NJ location for about 4 years. We loved the food and their great servers. However, today July 16 2015 seemed the same dinner rush but we waited for an hour for our food from the time we first placed the order. When when I expressed to the manager that we waited too long for ourfood which still was not comlete, had to wait some more for associtated condoments the manager, Anthonio (Manager) simply srugged his shoulders in a very rude fashion and responded that I was wrong..it was only 45 minutes and they are too busy. He did not say sorry nor showed any intention that he as the Manager and representative of Don Jose had an care for his customers specially when he was wrong . We were regular customers, respectful of the staff and paid in full for our food and service ...no customer has to wait an hour for their food...TIME IS MONEY TOO!! and that is what we paid too tonight. ANTHONIO IS NOT GOOD FOR DON JOSE.

Great service. Food ok, found plastic bag top in my food and wife's food. Clearly they are cutting open food bags and reheating. Just like Taco Bell. Too bad, as the place is nice inside. Staff friendly.

Really love the salsa, rice, beans, and veggie tacos here. The service is quick and it's a great place to grab a bite (and a drink!) during a lunch break.

Ordered blackened chicken fajita. The dish was good. Service needs a smile. Waiter couldn't refill water or chips. Had to get up to ask for refill.

Located on a lonely stretch of rte 46 in NJ sits Don Jose Mexican Restaurant....a find! This is part of a family chain of restaurants and has lots of charm and particularily great food. Lunch is a bargain with a good offering of very reasonable dishes. The inside is decorated magnificently with hand carved tables and chairs and beautiful features including new stone fireplace. Definitely a must visit when in the area!

  • Silvia R.

I have eaten here throughout the years & had never experienced such terrible service as I did recently. We were promptly seated & that's about the only positive aspect to our dinner. Our waiter took our order and never came back to service our table. We wanted to order a second round of drinks & he was chatting away at another with a group of men. He never turned around to even glance our way. The food was decent, but nothing to write home about. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED.

  • Coleen P.

This restaurant left me baffled! We walked in very happy to be there and greeted with great chips and salsa. We thought....finally a good restaurant in this area. The server didn't even know the name of the tequila in the house margaritas. The entrees arrived and my shrimp fajitas without the tortillas! My husbands entree....chicken Guadalajara was under seasoned and dry. Its frustrating when you can make better food at home. While the service was adequate, it wasn't friendly or notable. I couldn't believe that this place was filling up with customers when I left so unsatisfied. Maybe people in this area just SERIOUSLY have no other place to go. I know I will never go again!

For Mexican food, it is pretty solid. The service is okay and the people are nice. Basically, it's a good alternative to a pizza place.

Terrible drink (margarita), bland chips, awful salsa, atrocious lunch, and average price at best. This was easily the worst Mexican restaurant I've ever been to in NJ. Avoid this at all costs, especially since there are so many fantastic Mexican places to eat around here.

I gave it two shots--the first time I wasn't impressed, but felt the experience was redeemed by the margaritas (don't judge me). But now I will say I know better, having experienced Don Jose a second time minus the margaritas... We did take out tonight. For an appetizer we did the jalapeño poppers, which were great. But from there the meal went down hill... I got a chicken burrito and my boyfriend got a chimichanga. Both were bland, mushy, and not really memorable. I only ate 1 of my burritos, and ended up throwing the other away. It's disappointing because the Don Jose in East Hanover is so awesome--but this one doesn't even come close. Won't be repeating this mistake again--unless it's to go to Don Jose's for margaritas and jalapeño poppers....which really isn't much of a meal.

Good Mexican food. Best I've found in the area, unless you want to drive an hour. Guacamole is good. Mole Enchiladas are good. Steak wasn't so great. I'd give it less stars if it was located in the southern or western states, but for NJ it's just fine.

Cheerful and bright dining room and a warm, welcoming staff. The service was unbelievably quick, from drinks to food to check. The mariachi music was a fantastic surprise. Food was good, but fairly bland entrees. They need to add more flavor to the meals for a higher rating from me. Overall it's a nice place for a family or group, especially if you want everyone to be fairly satisfied. The food won't offend anyone and the atmosphere will keep everyone content.

This was my 1st visit to the netcong location (I've been to their E. Hanover location) and was not disappointed. Service was good and my shrimp fajitas were delicious. Will definitely go back!!

I was very skeptical going here for dinner. We have been passing it for a while and we decided to try out last Saturday night. We were in the mood for good quality Mexican with some Margaritas and Mojitos..First thing, this place gets very crowded and it has a small bar. So get here early in the evening or have a late dinner. We waiting 45 min but didn't mind cause we got some drinks at the bar and just chilled. The first impression I liked when the hostess were 2 very young girls. They had to be daughters of the owner. I like that, because it shows its a family owned place. The Margaritas were very good along with a very tasty Mojito. The decor I like as well. Very Mexican inside and a fun atmosphere. They had 2 mariachis walking around playing the guitar and singing. We started off with a cheese dish with chorizo in it. It came to the table sizzling hot with home made wrapped tortias. We ate it right up as it was very good. My finance got the Shrimp Fajitas. It was great...the Shrimp were cooked to perfection. The sides were also very good. I got the Steak dish that came with 2 different enchiladas, beans and rice. I didn't expect the best steak as it is not a steak house, but it was very tasty and had a nice grilled taste to it. The sides were excellent. I really enjoyed the dinner here. I'm not a big Mexican food person, but I def enjoyed it here and I will def be coming back. They also make sangria so def get a pitcher with your meal. What I liked also was that the menu was very authentic Mexican and not your typical Chevy's stuff. This place is family owned and you can see they take pride in their food. The service is not great, but this is not a high end place..it's a fun Mexican place so who cares if the service is not perfect, they get the job done.

I have eaten here 4 times now so i think i can speak on service, quality of food and atmosphere. I genuinely want to like this place but they really need to change some things. Let's start with decor and environment.. Its a nice space, tall booths and tables in the middle with a large stone fireplace. Overall, really nice, casual, lively and colorful. Live mariachis on the weekends make for a really fun night out. They really should absolutely dim the lights at night because the whole place stays way too bright and the mood is somewhat killed by the lack of good lower lighting. This is an amateur mistake. We were there last night and the menus were pretty filthy. Specifically mine had a big smash of guacamole or some sort of green sauce dried and stuck to the back page. Kind of gross. You get the idea that they dont wipe them down often. That is your first impression of the food and quality. Most of the pages had some fragments of food on all of our menus. The margaritas are very good and you can customize the tequila for a top shelf / patron option. There were big inconsistencies with the mojito. The first we ordered came with a nice amout mint and fresh lime muddled in the glass. The second came out with a single mint leaf, no lime and it was returned to the bar. That was not a "mojito". The tortilla chips while freshly fried lacked any salt - making them sad, cardboard like and bland. They should at least salt them a bit when they're not yet dry because if you salt them at the table the salt just beads off. The salsa and guacamole are literally LOADED with cheap strong minced onions. If you LOVE an enormous amount of onions great, but the flavor is so overpowering that you will soon be burping them out. The salsa is surprisingly extremely spicy (ok for me) but once again, way too many onions. Did i mention the onions??? Also the guacamole is pre-made. If you ask for "spicy" light on the onion etc. you will be told "no it is pre-made we cannot". Fresh guac. should be a staple of ANY good Mexican restaurant. One gets the idea that there is a big white cement bucket in the back that they scoop the guacamole out of or perhaps a jumbo plastic bag that says "ACME Mexican guacamole bulk". It too is LOADED with massive amounts of minced white onion. It was completely overkill and pungent. A major disappointment and for me, inedible. I frequent a lot of great Mexican restaurants and even Dos Caminos in NYC makes the guacamole to order, you can charge more and it is FRESH. You can add jalapeno, fresh lime etc. whatever you want it is easy and a world away from the slop this place serves. Ordered the Steak Cinco De Mayo. The platter came out with 2 pieces of steak in a spicy, vinegary picante red sauce with a scoop of black beans. I like spicy so, that was not a problem. The steaks are covered with a thick slab of cheese. Couldnt finish it, the cheese was not fully melted and the steak was very tough and chewy with a big rubber band-like piece of fat in the middle. Yuck. I ordered it "medium". It tasted like it steamed somehow. You know how steak gets if it is sitting in water in a frying pan? Makes it very chewy and not at all tender. The chicken garlic arceo was another weird dish. There's about 1/2cup of minced out of the jar garlic dumped on top of a chicken breast. It is literally swimming in jarred garlic. Kind of like a meal a construction worker might cook for his girlfriend. No elegance or class to the dish at all but a heap of garlic and garlic juice in a thickened white wine sauce. Very sloppy dish. Service was ok, you get the idea the waitresses arent happy. No one was really smiling. We spent 250.00 for 4 people so, with a tip on top of a bill like that you would think we would have been given a warmer feeling but maybe the waitress was having a bad night. The service was not a major reason for my disappointment these last times I have dined there. It is 100%the food and lack of freshness. I hope the owners read this and make some changes. I really sincerely want to like this place. There certainly was a huge line waiting to sit down around 7-8pm. Probably a 40 minute wait. Its based on convenience and the fact that Netcong is a sleepy little town without a lot of options for locals unless they drive 3-5 miles. If another mexican place opens nearby Don Jose might be in trouble.

Good atmosphere, nice staff, and nice bar. Food was not consistent though. Appetizers were very good, but chicken was dry the two times I've gone

I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food, but I must say I really enjoyed it. The margaritas are #1 and having a few of them before eating definitely helped in my experience. They have a chorizo and cheese app which is crazy good. How can it not be :) They also have a pretty standard kids menu, so one got chicken fingers and the other got tacos, which she loved. I look forward to trying a second time!

We have been here twice. The bartenders need training on how to 'romance' the customer and be a bit more sociable and show they enjoy making their drinks. I found both bartenders I have encountered aloof and in a rush. Food is average. Matches the ambiance of the place. Don't think it is meant to be a 3 start Mexican experience. I so long for authentic Mexican with wholesome ingredients in this area. This menu is geared to help American's be more familiar. No one smiles...place feels tense and rushed. Smile....dim the lights a bit....

Went here tonight with a friend. Service was decent, atmosphere was good. My Mojito was poorly made and I left it untouched. Dinner was average. I'd certainly eat here again, but found nothing to really rave about.

we were pleasantly surprised to stumble across this place in the middle of no where. the food was fast and fresh and the menu was exactly what we were looking for in mexican restaurant. the server was a little gruff but we hardly blamed her. we went on a Saturday night and were surrounded by drunk suburbanites that clearly didn't know there limit. we'll definitely be visiting again!

My experience may have differed with other reviewers. I can find nothing to recommend this place other than the chips and salsa were quite good. The chicken tacos that my wife had were barely edible and the beef chimichanga I had was extremely bland and contained very little meat. Menus and tabletop were dirty, I did not get a feel that the staff cared much about providing a good dining experience.

My boyfriend and I have been to Don Jose's twice and have enjoyed it both times! The only reason I subtracted a star was because we had to wait a half hour before being seated and there's really no where to stand to wait for your table. Other then that, when you sit down you completely forget that you waited for so long! We tried the sangria both times, the first time we tried the white and the second we tried the red. The sangria was made perfectly. They already had the chips and salsa waiting when we sat down, and it was probably the best salsa I've had at a Mexican restaurant. If you do not like cilantro you might think differently but I love cilantro so I was impressed. The food came out quickly and we both ordered fajitas. They were sizzling for like 5 minutes after they brought them out and they were delicious. Definitely the best fajitas we have both ever had. I got vegetables fajitas and my boyfriend got steak. The service was great, the atmosphere was great, and the drinks were great! We will definitely be returning again and again.

Party of 4, Friday night, no reservations. Seated within 5 minutes - just enough time to grab drink at the bar. Atmosphere was bright and cheerful and colorful. Chips and salsa appeared and disappeared very quickly - and were refilled at same pace. Service was great. Guacamole was fresh and creamy. I ordered the pork chops - flavors were great, chops were a little thin, therefore a little dry. My group also ordered a steak, combo #4 (I think), can't recall the 4th dish. Everyone was pleased with their food. I will definitely return. Total bill was under $80 for 4 entrees and a couple of rounds - not bad.

I gave this place a couple of shots and I really wanted to like the food, but each visit presented me with a new culinary disaster. The food here is about as bland as it comes and if you have any sort of palette, I recommend sticking to the margaritas which was the only saving grace to our night. During our last visit a few days ago, we were greeted by an exceptionally rude waiter who seemed to be a manager and once we ordered, he was no where to be found. We had to ask a bus boy to get us our check at the end of our service. As I mentioned above, the food was bland. My girlfriend and I both ordered the chicken fajitas only I ordered mine blackened. When the dishes came out I tried my blackened chicken only to find that the only thing blackened in flavor was the char on the chicken. Sure they added spice, but they apparently burnt it all into a crispy char which would make even the biggest fan of "well done" food cringe. Another shared complaint my girlfriend and I had was with the grilled vegetables. Almost the entire pan was onions and I almost took a fork to the hand trying to steal one of the 5 pepper slivers on her plate. All in all, I would go back for margaritas at the bar, but that's about it. I wouldn't even chance it with a bar app...

I had such high hopes for this place because it is within walking distance of my house. I have given it two chances and the food is inedible. I don't understand. Mexican should be so easy.

We are here attending the Cal Ripken's baseball championship for 8U. Anyway, to top off an afternoon of exciting baseball we went to Don Jose Mexican Restaurant for dinner. The combination platter I order was delicious and my wife's dinner was also delicious. Ice tea and draft beer were cold and refreshing. Service was fast and friendly. Ah, the selections for dessert was good too! Prices and the portions of the food service was plentiful and served hot! If you enjoy Mexican Food this is the place to try.

I came here with my cousins from UK, picked the place randomly while driving from Pocono to North Jersey. Never expected such an authentic Mexican food with beautiful decor and humble service. I order vegetarian Enchilada and my cousins order, Chicken burritos, Chicken Guadalajara. Overall whatever we order turned out great. Highly recommend this place.

What a surprise to find better tasting, and somewhat more authentic, Mexican food out near Stanhope than it is closer to home in Jersey City. The restaurant is very colorfully designed and the details in the tables and seating is very cool. The guacamole was very much to my taste, and it was somewhat chunky and didn't contain too much tomato. Also, while I am not the biggest fan of margaritas, the one I had here can only be described as straight up delicious. My only knock on the restaurant is the service; while we were attended to by several employees, the waiter that I would consider our main server was very rude. He did not introduce himself initially and when we tried to get his attention later on in the meal, his response was something along the lines of "What happened, what do you want".

Food was alright...Salsa and guacamole were delicious!! I had a chicken chimichanga which was pretty good. My husband had chicken tacos which were also good. We both felt the rice and beans were a bit flavorless. The atmosphere was okay. Tacky Mexican restaurant decor.

I don't know where to begin. Ok, I'll start at the beginning. The tequila sunrise should not be orange. I ordered grilled chicken with cheese, refried beans and rice. The chicken was dry, even with the melted cheese. The rice had absolutely no taste and the portion of beans was pitiful. I would absolutely never eat here again.

Food was excellent. Starting with the salsa and chips. The salsa was homemade and spicy. All fresh veggies. If I was going to make any change to it I would add more cilantro. But excellent just the same. Service was superb. Food portions were plentiful. My son and I had steaks which I have to say we're lean no fat and very tender. Both had different cuts. He had the fajitas and I had a steak made the way I wanted it. I was in a diet so I asked to have it plain with just a green salsa and a salad which they had no problem accommodating. The food was all made to order. My husband had the salmon and he said his was excellent. I know we will be back again. Everyone was very friendly and the place was clean and bright and pleasant.

We enjoy going here - the décor is colorful & fun - the food is tasty. All the traditional Mexican favorites are on the menu - but, drinks are a bit weak for their price. Service is fast. If you like Mexican food, Don Jose's definitely a place to try in this area.

Finally found some great Mexican food in the area. This place is a gem with great decor and food. I normally do two visits before writing a positive review but have eaten here at least four times. The menu doesn't show online but they have a Mexican bi-bim-bop (sizzling stone bowl) for two with shrimp, ribs, asada, pollo, and veggies. Comes out sizzling hot and delicious - the aroma simply unleashes the drool as well. Ask for more tortillas as they are not enough. Pair it with a carafe of Sangria with fresh fruit and it's a meal that'll satisfy the Mexican food snob, two hungry appetites, the relative cheapskate (fajitas are pricey), and the adventurous eater. That's not an easy thing to do.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
