I had fairly low expectations for this place, a replacement for the excellent Culin Ariane. But Laurel & Sage was a very pleasant surprise. The room has been redecorated, and it is lovely, if loud. It's only been open a few weeks, but the wait staff was friendly and relatively prompt. And the food was excellent. Outstanding really. We had a salad with beets and goat cheese, with bits of candied bacon. Sounds a little weird but it was great. I had the soft shell crabs, and my wife had scallops. Laurel & Sage nailed it on both dishes. The profiteroles were a nice way to finish. For a place that just opened and is still finding its legs, Laurel & Sage is off to a great start. My only complaint is the noise. The room is very loud. Hopefully they can figure out a way to tone it down.

The food is quite good depending on what you order. The staff recommendations are a let down. This place is rather new and needs some customer service training. The sound levels can be above the norm given the small space here. Two guests in my party sent back entrees and we were surprised the owner never came to the table to inquire. No one at my table said they would return however I enjoyed everything and will take another chance. I don't believe this will be able to replace Culinariane.

This is my first negative review and being a business owner I hesitated to write this but it was really sub par. I ordered the scallop appetizer ($16) and it was extremely salty. So much so I needed my water glass refilled several times. One dining companion and I ordered the shrimp and chorizo risotto with hot cherry peppers but we could order without the peppers because it was very spicy. So we nixed the heat. I asked the waitress if it was rock shrimp and she said no. It came with three jumbo shrimp. It did not. The shrimp were small, cut into pieces and hidden in the rice. The chorizo was over cookeed and my knife couldnt cut it. The dish was so hot probably because they removed the cherry peppers but the heat remained. My husband ordered the pomegranate short rib appy and we all tasted it and not one of us thought it good. I asked for a reservation for 4 at 7:30 and was told they could accommodate us at 7:15. The place was practically empty! The Waitress said they had 23 cancellations. Now I know why! It is expensive by NJ standards and it was not worth it!
