Pizza
Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.
Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.
Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

After some Yelp research, we detoured here to break up the trip from MD to Long Island to check out Arturo's brick ovens. Rather than make the hard choice, I just ordered 3 pizzas for me and the baby with the excuse that we'd take the leftovers to Grandpa in Long Island. Wifey claimed she was in no mood for pizza, but ordered a tomato mozzarella basil sandwich on a beautiful hearth bread. Her sandwich was 5 stars for sure. Pizzas were definitely 4 stars on the thin crust (a bit cracker like); but the chef stopped by for a chat, he told us to order the NY style crust next time since it's based on the same bread dough in wifey's sandwich - I'm betting that's where the 5th star happens. And I really would like to try some of the dinners from the oven. Despite being 4 hours away from home ... I am sure we'll make the detour again on our next trip.

We stumbled upon Arturo's because French Gypsy Guitarist, Stephane Wrembel was playing here. Who knew that this would turn out to be my favorite brick-oven pizza place in North Jersey, hands down. The pasta dishes are prepared perfectly and well portioned to share for 2. The stand out pasta dish for me is Pasta Cinghiale (wild boar ragu and mushrooms). The brick oven - Arturo's Margherita is made with hand-made mozzarella and all other ingredients are all freshly made daily. Dan, the owner, will visit your table at least once a night. And if you start up a conversation about his perfection of pizza doe making, he will leave you with plenty of good information. He is very informative, descriptive, and passionate about his food.

Wow, this little place blows me away. Tasty food, simple but perfectly prepared. Their ravioli dish is so delicious and their salads are just beautiful. The good thing about this place is, it is also a family friendly restaurant. Their pizzas are great and will certainly satisfy the little hands. We will certainly come back.
(5)Christine C.
My entire family lovesssss the MONTAGNA pizza. If this is your first time, you should ask to pick two different types of pizza for each half of your pie. We were able to try all their red sauce pizzas this way. I can't wait to taste their white pizza!!
(4)Sherri S.
Unbelievable food... The pizza is better than Italy and the ingredients are so carefully sourced. Their roasted veggie specials are always amazing. Great bread and olive oil to start. The service is fabulous and the waitstaff is very knowledgeable about the food. Be prepared for a wait if you don't get there when they open. Very reasonable prices and a perfect place for families..they are very accommodating to toddlers.

It was great. Good pizza good pasta as good as we have in Brooklyn. If you are in Maplewood GO. Also they are BYOB and there is a great wine store down the block.

Update - since my first review I've been to Arturo's approx 20 times. The pizza at Arturros is easily the best in Northern NJ and might be in the top 5 if it was in NYC. This pizza is better reheated 24hrs later than most other pizzas fresh out of the oven. Now for the food - every restaurant owner who owns a so called "Italian" restaurant in NJ should go here and decide if what they serve is truely Italian. This place tastes like Italy, where the ingredients are the stars. The wild boar pasta is amazing and is right up there with anything I have eaten at Mario Batali's restaurants. These brothers may be the next superstar chefs- if this place was in NYC you would never get in. Thankfully its in Maplewood and off the radar - for now!!

The Best Pizza Ever - From crust to sauce to cheese!!! Everything is fresh and delicious. As a New Yorker, this place puts jersey on the map. Everyone who I have taken there becomes a repeat customer and is totally blown away
(5)Helen C.
Ate here two days in a row for a family visit -- and yes, it was *that* good. Having lived in New York for four years where it's all about the slice I knew I had to get some pizza while I was out on the East Coast. Especially because in LA where I'm from, great pizzas are sorely lacking. The pizza here is delicious! Had the parma and tartufi. Both were excellent. The toppings are fresh, generous and the cheese is high quality mozz that stretches from pan to plate. The crust is perfectly charred and chewy. Also tried their pear and gorgonzola salad which was light and tasty. If only Arturo's would open up in my neck of the woods.
(5)Zac F.
pizza is DANK. had their sausage and mushroom pizza as well as the pesto and tomato one (forget the exact names) and they were both amazing. I'm a big crust guy and this was some of the best crust I've ever had, big, chewy and soft. wish there was some dipping sauce or oil for the crust. went on a wednesday afternoon for lunch and there was no wait, service was great. highly recommend checking it out. not cheap for a pizza place, but not overpriced for how fresh and organic the food is.
(5)Daniel G.
While the pizza is amazing, true thin crust and farm fresh toppings, it is the meals that set Arturo's apart. Whether the "Penne with Sausage Ragu" or the vegetable specials, swiss chard is a favorite, the ingredients and preparation are exceptional. Friendly, professional service tops off a wonderful environment. It is BYOB. There are two wine/liquor stores with good selection within two blocks. Strongly recommended.

We love this place. We've watch Dan Rich turn this from an ok pizzeria into a welcoming osteria using fresh, local ingredients inspired by modern Italian cuisine. He has some of the finest homemade bread and pizza dough. It was great to see him recognized by the James Beard Foundation. It's a small place and you can find yourself waiting on a busy night.
(5)Brandon P.
Its some of the best pizza in the NY/NJ area. If Fred or Dan are there, sometimes they'll do custom things like a Cinghale pie. The food here has some of the best ingredients and is local. Chicken is rare to get here, but when they get it, its excellent. I recommend coming for lunch and getting a meatball sandwich. Its fair priced, uses their own bread(same dough for pizza) and some of the tastiest meatballs Ive ever had. If you can find better food than this place, expect to pay much more. I wish there was more selection of great Italian food in the area, as their menu doesnt cover everything. Thats the only negative I can give them. And no lemons for drinks :(
(5)Emily M.
My boyfriend and I ate here for Sunday lunch. I ordered a personal Margarita, he ordered a Montagne and then we sat at a table outside in the sunshine. Our waiter was extremely helpful and cheerful and quickly brought out a carafe of water. The pizzas came out and while they looked beautiful, they did not taste as good as they looked. My pie had a good amount of tasty mozzarella, but barely any sauce. The sauce seemed to be the only element giving any flavor. Overall my pie was too bland to be called anything but 'ok'. My boyfriend didn't really enjoy the Montage. He said the taste of the spinach overpowered everything else on the pie - including the speck. I enjoyed my meal mostly because of the beautiful weather and the good vibes of the waiter. Bottom line - The next time I want good pizza in Maplewood, I'll definitely head to Roman Gourmet.

Great spot. Had a number of small plates and then split a pizza ... they do a great job. the BYOB aspect is nice on the wallet too
(5)James R.
One of the three great Pizzerias in town, this one being the fanciest. Best for dinner but you can also have lunch there. Takes a while for the food and is slightly crowded. Very nice staff. Almost always order pizza for the main meal and the soup of the day and crustinni for appetizers. Highly recommend!

I haven't eaten here in about 3-4 years. We used to go on Saturday evenings around 5:30 pm and never had a problem getting a table. Well something has definitely changed because tonight we got there at 5:20 and it was packed to the gills. we had a 40 minute wait on our hands, huh? Perhaps it was the emergence of a very slow to bud Spring. It was a beautiful, sunny, 70 degree day and EVERYONE was out and about. Not great when you are hungry. Arturo's is known for the high quality of their food and the simplicity of their menu. We always get an order of the fire roasted meatballs. This time we got two. They are very good. Light, airy, and flavorful, they won't weigh you down. I am pretty sure white bread is used in the mix to make them more moist. The tomato sauce is also delicious, balanced nicely with basil and parmesan. You might want to save the leftover sauce if you plan to order pizza. The reason being that the crust is pretty bready and doughy. Far more so than I remember it being. We asked for our Margarita and Bianco well done however the center was still too doughy and I ended up cutting the last third of my slice off and leaving it for the plate. There was a nice char on the crust but the taste of yeasty bread was a little overpowering. Here's the thing, pizza and bread are not mutually exclusive. In other words, my pizza shouldn't taste like a bread basket and I shouldn't be searching for butter while I'm eating it. It reminded me of the pizza at Reservoir in Boonton. I definitely remember Arturo's making better pizza but that isn't to say that it's still not good for some. It's just not my thing. The salads always look amazing and though we didn't order one this time, I strongly suspect they might be the best thing on the menu. This place is due for either an expansion or a new and much bigger locale. The dining room is ridiculously small and there is no waiting area. Still, waitstaff is seasoned and efficient. They know how to move it along without making you feel rushed.
(4)David S.
Absolutely fantastic food. I have yet to have anything here I didn't throughly enjoy.
(5)Jackie F.
If I could give Arturo's 6 stars I would. Hands down the BEST pizza I have ever had anywhere. The saddest thing about moving out of Maplewood was that we could no longer have Arturo's whenever we wanted. However, my husband and I STILL commute here from Queens on special occasions just to have our fix. The ingredients are so fresh and you can tell that they care about the quality and art of the food there. We always order the Ricotta crostini, Margarita pizza, and Ziti al Telefono. The sauce and cheeses are unsurpassed (coming from someone who grew up with an Italian Nonna-that is saying something!!!) Every time we eat pizza somewhere else, we sadly always end up saying the same thing: "Yeah, it's really good....but it's not Arturo's..."
(5)PC P.
Very small/intimate/homely restaurant - expect to wait for 20-30 min for table, unless you get lucky. But WOW is it worth it. The food is as fresh as can be. Try everything on the menu!! We tried the mushroom ravioli based on a fellow yelpers review; the portion was small but it was GREAT! Definitely try a pizza, or two.
(5)Rich J.
Great salad, best artisanal pizza I've had in a while.
(4)Debbie G.
In this quiet street aligned with restaurants each with their own character, we found this cute little wood oven fired pizzeria. We arrived late on a Friday night to the busy, filled-to-capacity restaurant, worried that it was too late for us to get a table. But they promptly accomodated us and we settled in with our bottle of Malbec BYO. This ended up going marvelously with our cheesy pasta and pizza dishes. The Parma pizza was to die for with stronge gorgonzola and parmesan flavors oozing out of each bite. My friend got the Wild Mushroom Ravioli which although a bit sparse in count, was full cheese and mushroom deliciousness as well.

This small restaurant serves the freshest salads and excellent side dishes of vegetables. Simple yet fresh and authentically Italian side appetizers, i.e, meatballs, ricotta crostini, etc. The variety of thin crust pizza are fresh and excellent. The staff is attentive and accomodating. It is worth the wait if there is a wait.
(4)Allan L.
I had heard great things about Arturo's and we went tonite. I will say it was some of the best pizza I have ever had on par with anywhere. Try the Farm pie, mozzarella, mushrooms, parmigiana really good, just when u think it's bland you get a shot of sea salt underneath that really makes it. Brick oven and thin crust is superb. The entrees looked good and will try on the next visit. One small note to management, our waitress gave us good service but she was so gushy in her friendliness it was as she was auditioning for a Broadway show. She announced her name 3 times was acting as if she was in California and it was just way over the top. It was eventually very annoying because she was TOO MUCH....Please tell her to turn it down a few notches or stop smoking weed on her breaks.
(4)Stephen P.
This has to be the best pizza in New Jersey! In fact everything on their menu is delicious. The salads are made with organic vegetables and super fresh. Try the Gorgonzola Pine Nut Salad....just amazing. The Antipastpo is also delicious. For pizza try the Greco with it's swirls of pesto on top....so good! At lunchtime try the Mozzarella, Tomato and Basil on their home made bread. The staff and owners are friendly, obliging and always greet you with a warm welcome. What more can I say....I love this place!
(5)Rich P.
Peach salad was excellent. Pizza was good. Sat outside, it was very nice. I did not think it was 4 star like so many others.

This place is great. I have been going to Arturo's for about a year and a half and finally decided to post a review. The food is wonderful. They use fresh, high quality, local ingredients while still maintaining reasonable prices. The pizza is amazing. The dough they use is great. Not bar pie thin, but not thick, it is just thin enough. You can tell they put a lot of time and effort in making this pizza dough. One bite and you will know what I'm talking about, it retains the right about of chew/bite to it. Their pastas are all delicious, I am partial to the one with wild boar ragu. All the salads are delicious, and I usually don't enjoy salad. If you are able to make it for lunch , they have sandwiches on the menu. The sandwiches are made on their delicious bread, which tastes like it uses a dough very similar to the pizza. I have honestly not had a bad meal here. The only thing I miss, is their price-fixe tasting menu on Saturday nights. My only warning, is the place is on the small side, so waits can be a little long on Friday and Saturday evenings. Either be prepared to wait or just take it if you live close enough.

Went here last night with the bf and a bottle of vino (it's a BYO). Vino-good :) Margherita pizza- bad :( I was really looking forward to their margherita thin crust pizza due to the great yelp reviews and the fact that the menu states "dine in only for quality assurance". You're better off going down the street to Roman Gourmet for theirs-- sooooo much better! It was disappointing for the following reasons: 1)lacked flavor overall. i guess they forgot the salt in everything. 2)the thin crust was not very thin and tasted like bread more than crust. it was not cooked all the way through and still wet/soggy. wish they baked it longer before adding the ingredients. 3)too much tomato sauce. it felt like i ordered flat bread with tomato sauce and nothing else. 4)the cheese lacked flavor. 5)the outer rim of the crust was black and burnt. So overall, the pizza was very bland and flavorless. We spruced it up with parmesan cheese and red pepper flakes. It's nice that you can bring your own alcohol as it was a very cheap dinner out. Wish the pizza was better. I won't be going back anytime soon. Roman Gourmet's margherita pizza is 10 times better.
(2)Emelia P.
Great find! Excellent food and service! Margherita pizza and Tartufi pizza to die for. Thin, crisp crust baked to perfection. Wild mushroom ravioli, homemade, fresh, melts in your mouth. Prosciutto di Parma with homemade mozzarella and basil on fresh baked bread just like Grandma would make!
(5)Antonio R.
Awesome food, awesome service!
(4)gabriella s.
AMAZING, Authentic italian pizza, I cant say enough of about this place. I say its the best pizza I ever had in all of the US. (And I have traveled all over ) Salads are amazing too, great service.
(5)Joe S.
Really great consistency in the freshness of their Margherita Pizza's, and the brick oven is what keeps that flavorful char look on the pizza.
(5)Lina S.
The food is amazing here. They make a big deal about using fresh, local ingredients, and you can really taste the difference. They are known for their pizza, which is delicious, but the appetizers and other dishes are great as well. The one drawback is that seating is limited and they don't take reservations, so you may end up waiting a while to get seated on busy nights.
(4)Steven A.
best pizza around best homemade bread on table m yum good italian food great for vegetarians ok for vegans go eat enjoy I love it ! staff and owners are way cool and want to please
(5)PAT C.
Today I did a side by side test of Arturo's and the pizza polar up the street starting with an R.... Arturo's had less toppings it's crust was twice the size of other pies, it cost more then the pizza palor up the street and Arturo's had a burnt flavor.
(2)Brent F.
The service at Arturo's is impeccable. The owner is a constant presence and really makes you feel welcome. The food is locally sourced and always fresh and prepared to perfection. The pizzas here are great alternatives to a greasy NY/NJ pie. BYOB
(5)Jacob L.
I went to Arturo's last night with a couple friends for the first time. I had suggested it after hearing so many great things, and I have to say it lived up to the hype. It's fighting words to say that a restaurant is "the best pizza in NJ," and while I wouldn't lump this in with the rest of Jersey's pizzeria's, I would definitely say it's the best artisanal pizza in the state. What I liked the most about it was the emphasis on home-grown, natural ingredients which really comes out in the taste of the food. We had the special (a wheatberry soup), 3 specialty pizzas (the margherita, one with sausage, and one with speck), and the meatballs. All of it was delicious, though our favorites were definitely the sausage, mushroom, and truffle-oil specialty pizza and the meatballs which had some of the best sauce I've ever tried. The service staff was also excellent.
(5)Gia M.
Arturo's is soo good. The pizza is perfect. The homemade ricotta drizzled with olive oil served on top of their warm crusty bread - seriously I came back for it a few days later but it wasn't on the specials that day (heartbreak). And the meatballs! I never would have known, (because I make pretty damn good meatballs myself so I don't usually order them out because they are usually a soggy dense mess) but my son ordered them and you can tell right away that they look good, and so I took a bite, then another, then placed another order just for me. Everything's been good. I hope it stays that way! YUMMM
(5)Kristin C.
A few friends live in Maptewood and took us there in the fall of 2007. Excellent pizza! The margarita (sp?) is a specialty. The only bad part is that they close at 10 even on the weekend. This is not a "pizza parlor" but a pizza restaurant.
(4)Robert C.
had a pretty good experience at Arturo's which I'd been wanting to try. Had to meet some friends from out of town in Milburn of all places so i took them over here on a Sunday night. I was expecting to have to wait which I wouldn't have liked but there was no wait for a table outside. The service was good -- not overly attentive but we were able to sit there for a long time and while it took a while for the food to come we weren't in a rush. The white truffle/sausage pizza was very good and the fact that they had a white truffle pizza in itself is a good sign. A very pleasant experience.
(4)AJ- L.
love love love everything about Arturo's and its no surprise that its one of the most popular restaurants in Maplewood. The pizzas and pastas are to die and BYOB makes enjoying the meal with your favorite wine even better.
(4)Lawrence L.
This place is as good as it gets. Outstanding artisan work on pizza and light Italian fare. I wish they still delivered. Love all of their work.
(5)Chris S.
Great pizza and dinners. Highly recommend the thin crust well done pie. There's a tasting menu on Saturdays and Tuesdays that's worth investing in the long-term reservation.
(4)Frank R.
The best thin crust pizza and pasta for miles. must try the pasta cianghale (wild boar and mushrooms). BYO.
(5)Arlene A.
Tried the Bianco Pizza, (with sausage) twice...in the same week...that's how good it was...and it was take-out, so I can just imagine how heavenly this pizza would be straight out of the oven, devoured within minutes. The crust is DELICIOUS, rivaling Nick's in Forest Hills, and the toppings were simple, but fresh, and of excellent quality. They actually offer crumbled sausage (instead of sliced, which I can't stand!) We also tried the fire roasted meatballs which were tasty, and the salads (Caesar & goat cheese), which were rather pedestrian, but very fresh. I can't wait to go back and try the meals! Yay! I finally found great pizza in my neck of the woods!
(5)Felice S.
Wonderful reasonably priced tasting menu. Everything is fresh and fabulous. The produce is locally farmed and is so flavorful. We came all the way from Brooklyn and will definitely return. It's a lovely space and the staff is friendly and attentive. This restaurant is a gem.
(5)adrian W.
AMAZING PIZZA! Dan has really worked magic in there! I have never meet a chef/owner with such a passion for what he does, and it results in the best Pizza/Italian in the area!
(5)carolyn s.
I swear if the owner does not contact me and apologize then they surly don't deserve any patronage from anyone. Heard the pizza was very good and had been wanting to go there for some time. It was a very hot sunday night and we went a little on the early side to get a table since it is small and they don't take reservations. Keep in mind we have some amazing pizza places all around us with Star Tavern being very close also. There were four of us, my husband, twentythree year old son, and a friend and myself. We walked into the restaurant and it seemed as if there was no air conditioning and was probably a 95 degree day. I asked how long the wait was and she showed me a communal table that would have been 15 min or otherwise a 45 min wait. The communal table has small children sitting at it and I was not in the mood since it was going to be hot and uncomfortable to begin with. I told her we would wait the 45 min. We went outside to wait and noticed tables on the side of the building, it also seemed cooler with a very slight breeze outside and thought that would probably be best. There were about 5 tables for 4 (no one sitting in any of them nor waiting to) and 2 tables for 2 people (also empty) and at the first set of tables (not sure if it were 2 for 2 table or 1 table for 4) were people waiting to eat inside. So we decided that the spot where the 2 tables for 2 was best since there was a awning above blocking the sun that was going to set in about a 1/2 hour, and once the sun went down it would get cooler which would be more comfortable to eat when our food came out. We pushed to two table for 2 together and sat down. Not 2 minutes later did the hostess come out and asked us to move back to the tables for 4 that were in the full sun. We said we did not want to move to another spot since this was partially covered by the awning and she did not care and told us the sun was going down and there would be no sun soon. Did it not matter that to her that it was 95 degrees not in the sun? We were there first and there were plenty of other tables and no one wanted to sit outside until we decided we were going to sit outside after talking to someone who came out when they were done eating inside and told us they can usually stand the heat but it was brutal inside. It was just all to difficult. They did not care about the customer service at all!! After not having the air working, no tables and trying to push us onto a communal table which we did not want, we settled for sitting outside (where no one was sitting) and then telling us we could not sit where we wanted to cause they were tables for 2 and we were 4. I should have told them we would split up and by two parties of 2. Needless to say we left, going out for pizza should not be that difficult. I would love to try Arturos Pizza and write a review on the actual food but will never go back unless the management apologizes for very poor customer relations and service. FYI we went to St. James Gate....they have a new chef and our food was amazing!!!
(1)Andrew W.
Great pizza but I am also impressed that the owners are supporters of locally grown produce. I would like to see more restaurants support local urban, suburban, and nearby rural farms and source locally.
(4)Tramy H.
I like that margherita pizza!
(4)MARY L.
This is my favorite pizza place in New Jersey. They use fresh ingredients and the pizza is thin crust and cooked in a brick oven. The salads are the best--they use local ingredients--if you like beet salad it truly is the best. They also offer Italian soda--the lemon flavor is great. Beware, this place is small and it fills up quickly. If you want to give this place a try, don't attempt Friday night unless you don't mind waiting outside under the moonlight. Go M-Th and bring your own wine...there are plenty of kids so don't expect quiet. Mangia, Mangia, Mangia.
(5)Orfelina A.
Great little italian place with good food, service and reasonable prices. Its a byob, which is nice. The menu is small, and I understand that this makes each dish that much more perfect, but, it's just not enough varity for me. We had the chick peas appetizer (ceci) and it was very tasty, but, not something I can't make at home, actually I already do and will tweak my recipe to reproduce theirs. My husband had the pizza with arrugual and prosiutto and it had a nice crust, but could have used a little more in the topings category, it was a little bit dry. I had the wild mushroom ravioli and they were PERFECT. They melt in your mouth. I will definitely go back for the ravioli. Back to the menu, no dessert and no coffee. We ended up going to Basilico for dessert. Again I understand the concept of keeping it simple, but, would it kill them to offer 2 or 3 dessert options? Overall, I would go again, but, for a quick bite, not a night out, and that is because the small menu does not provide enough varity for appetizers, entrees and dessert.
(4)Laurie S.
Very disappointed in the restaurant week fare. 3-course "tasting menu" turned out to be salad, soup and plain chicken over greens. Not at all what we expected--food not interesting and not a tasting experience. Not worth the $35. Weren't even served bread. Mea culpa tho for not checking out what tasting menu meant ahead of time....
(1)Richard B.
Very easy. It's top notch. It's become our default Sunday nite take-out. Try it! Dee-lish!! Agree with all the other reviews.
(4)Jake M.
Oh, what the heck, I'll give it five stars since I was delighted to eat a pie there and could tell the other food was nice too. We got the Margherita "traditional" crust (if you like thin crust they've got it too). I asked for light on cheese, well done and got it. Lovely place, caring and charming servers. It was afterward a delight to walk up and down the main street this restaurant is on and visit an independent bookstore that was advertising a book about a jazz singer -- by featuring that jazz singer, behind a mike! Technically that's another review, but on the other hand it added to our experience of Arturo's. No desert, salads etc. this time but we'll be back.
(5)J L.
I went on the recommendation of a glowing NY Times review. I was not able to book a RSVP for the tasting menu, so I went for the a la carte menu. I enjoyed the food here, despite a bit of unevenness in the cooking. While the staff was friendly and pleasant, the overall service threw me a bit for a loop (see below). All in all, I did enjoy the meal, despite any nitpicking below. I do wish I had the tasting menu that everyone seems to be raving about. FOOD: The gorgonzola-pine nut salad was tasty, although I do wish they dressed the salad greens rather than place sun dried tomato puree mounds around the salad for you to mix yourself. The cured meats was a nice appetizer as well. I did not have the chance to sample the duck prosciutto, but everything else was of great quality. If I had to tweak anything from this dish, I would prefer the boar sausage to be sliced a bit thicker - personal preference. I was not a fan of the thin crust pizza here. The crust tasted like frozen, tasteless cookie cutter dough that I've had at chain restaurants, and I probably have. The toppings were fresh but otherwise ordinary. That being said, the regular pizzas that passed by looked quite appealing. I also tried the boar ragu pasta, which sounded great, especially after having the cured boar sausage to start with. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente. The ragu, however, was overcooked, so the boar meat had a dried texture that lacked any distinct flavor. SERVICE I wasn't sure what to make of it. The wait staff was friendly, but once you sat down, they didn't really attend to you. I'm not sure that they're supposed to (except to being you food/drinks). Either way, the service felt too casual. You also have to order at the counter. I wasn't sure if I even needed to tip anyone at the end - I certainly didn't feel as though I needed to tip at the standard rates. AMBIENCE Casual, noisy, lots of families especially on the weekends.

Still relatively unknown, despite the Star Ledger acclaim for the brick oven pizza in 2007. But the fabulous margherita pie is just the beginning. Ask owner/chef Dan to make you something special, then enjoy one of the best meals you've had in a long time. Best of all, it's a byob, and you can split pizza, the large salads, and pasta, and get out of there for $15. ***Update*** Friends and I have been making Arturo's a Friday night tradition for about a year now. Dan (the owner/chef) has proven to be an amazing creative chef. His dishes are simple, but amazingly flavorful in the true northern Italian tradition. The wait staff could not be more friendly or efficient. If you're lucky, the lovely Jessica will wait on you.
(4)Sue K.
Great, authentic, top ingredients, great service, BYOB!!! and no cork fee, and just overall good quality at reasonable price
(5)Clark S.
I'd give this 4 1/2 stars if Yelp allowed. Excellent pizza and other dishes. They do a tasting menu once a week that I've yet to try but looks amazing. They need a bigger joint though, the indoor area can get noisy with kids and kitchen stuff.
(4)Maren C.
love this place. the food is always fresh and they seem to have a focus on things made in-house and local ingredients. too many italian places in the area use items that are frozen or out of a can. i've been here a few times and the thin crust pizzas are great, as are the pastas. My favorite are the house-cured meats- get a plate of these to start and you won't be disappointed. The salads are pretty large as well and when you order a pasta they give you a house salad with it. Sometimes you may have to wait for a table, as the space is pretty small, and they do have some communal tables. Staff is always excellent and very friendly. I wish there were more places like this in NJ.
(5)Arum M.
Awesome pizza. The best around here. We have probably tried most of if not the entire menu. So good. Always a huge hit. Never have I gone and was disappointed. I've brought lots of friends here over the years and everything is delish. From the crostini to the pizza and the pasta. Highly recommend. We usually go once a month if not more. See you there!

Yes the food overall is very good. I haven't been to their other location Razza in Jersey City, curious how things are going there. The consistency of the pizza crust is marginal, you will get a thin but soft and undercooked crust, not the crisp you would look for. Whenever I've ordered to take home I heat up the pizza again to get the crust crisp. When I eat in its typically too soft as well Sometimes it's heavy with char, which is fine, but given the oven I would expect a firmer crust here. Sauce is sometimes very light IMO Given the ingredients are local and fresh, but not specified as organic, $8.50 for a side of meatballs is quite aggressive. Overall prices are high but not horrendous In a NJ suburb, this will be some of the best food out you can get in terms of quality ingredients and taste. That in turn is the issue here, a simple one of competition and supply Ultimately Arturo's is a victim of its own success with crowds, long waits, small seating area, and 2-3 hour pick up time estimates when ordering to pick up So the overall dining experience feels monopolistic, they command the attention but demand clearly exceeds supply most of the time, ultimately providing a dining experience that can be far too time consuming, and overall a bit too pricey
(3)Nay S.
Good brick oven pizza. BYOB. Get there early to get a table. Good fresh ingredients and their special salad and pizza were great. Service from the server to Waitresses was great even though they are busy they let us take our time and enjoy our wine. We would def come back.

Believe all of the Yelp hype because it is true! My friend and I were looking on Yelp for a new restaurant to try out and we stumbled upon Arturo's. It is a cute little restaurant with seating inside and outside. The place was packed when we arrived and we had about a 20 minute wait. The wait wasn't that bad, and it was probably a bit shorter than 20 minutes. We sat at a two top inside. The atmosphere is very cute and our waitress / bus staff were very nice and attentive. Even though it was super crowded the staff seemed very calm and had everything under control. My friend and I ordered two individual pizza's. She had the Margherita pizza and I had the Tartufi pizza. Both were delicious! The Tartufi came with sausage, mushroom, and white truffle oil and it was to die for! The sausage really stood out with such an excellent flavor and you could smell the truffle oil as they placed it in front of you. The pizza crust was perfect and slightly burnt which gave it that extra flavor of deliciousness. We were debating on whether to order a salad or not and I'm glad we didn't since the individual pizza's were a pretty decent size. The salad's they were bringing out were big as well, but looked delicious as well. Next time we go we decided we'll order an individual pizza and a salad to share. I can't wait! Arturo's is BYOB so that saves you some money on the check. It's really a great place to grab a pizza at a good price. I'll definitely be back soon!
(5)Tony M.
Great pizza! It is very hard to get a table and the place is very tiny, so be prepared to wait at least one hour. They have outside seating available. BYOB.
(4)Rupa R.
Great pizzas and salads. Week night wait line is at least 30-45 mins. This place is BYOB and they hand out wine glasses so you can drink while you wait for a table. So that's pretty cool. Friendly customer service. They usually have great dinner specials. So make sure you ask for them.
(4)Premie S.
Oh man Arturo's is my weakness!! I grew up in the area and have been going to Arturo's since I was a kid, mind you my tastebuds were not that refined back then. Now there are 2 things that you must know! 1. You will have to wait! And not 15-20min but like 1-2hrs so be prepared! Bring a nice bottle of wine, put your names on the list, park up at a bench and...wait! 2. The wait is worth it!! Everything and I mean everything is delicious! Locally sourced ingredients that are super fresh and of the highest quality. When you start off with good ingredients its only uphill from there. So you waited and waited and now your in! So where to start, the Kale salad, Gorgonzola and Pine Nut, and Sognatori salads are all knock outs! Plus you'll still have room for PIZZZZZA! If your really hungry, (I usually starve myself all day if I know I'm going to Arturo's later) typically I am, then get the Polpette Al Forno. These are the best meatballs I've ever had, super moist and delicious and I want them to bottle that marinara sauce. And lets not forget the wild mushroom ravioli, soft pillows stuffed with heavens best mushrooms swimming in god's gift to the earth...Truffle oil!!! My mouth is watering thinking about all of this goodness. And then comes the crescendo....Brick Oven Pizza!! Need I say more?? Yes..yes I need. Now I'm a girl that knows what I like so when I find something I LOVE its hard to stray...and that love of my life is the Tartufi pizza (substitute sausage with speck) its like taking a bite out of Naples...oh my word. So stop reading this and just go there... go there now!!! Now!!!
(5)Dominick R.
Found this place on Yelp after a visit to Turtleback Zoo. It has 250+ Yelp ratings with 4- 1/2 stars for a reason! Great place. Very simple menu, reasonable prices and great service. My wife and I shared a Margherita pizza and my 9 year old daughter had the meatball sandwich. All of the food was spot on excellent! Arturo's has a great atmosphere with delicious food. Family friendly and also has outdoor seating. They also accept credit cards. Overall highly recommended!
(5)Desiree J.
Simply the best pizza I have ever had in the US. My favorite antipasti are the crostino and the meat balls. Fast service, the waiters are very friendly.
(5)Dirk M.
Solid tasty pizza. Long lines and slightly scatterbrained staff (seriously, how many times do you almost knock someone over?) Definitely good food though.
(3)Kurt H.
Try Arturo's if you are looking for specialty/gourmet pizza. One of the best pies I've tasted. I would say second to Grimaldi's in Hoboken. The dough is light and airy, but crispy on the outside. I would also recommend the farmers salad. It is fresh and light! It is made with local vegetables and fruit including arugula, pears, sunflower seeds and balsamic vinaigrette. It's not on the menu, but is listed on the chalkboard. Come early or go on a weeknight. This place gets packed on the weekends. If you are looking to go on a Friday or Saturday, Coda is a great place to grab a drink while you wait.
(5)Melissa M.
BEST pizza I've ever had, hands down. And I've been to all of the so called "best pizza places" around....in the city, Brooklyn, etc. Nothing compares.
(5)Stephanie S.
I would recommend to family and friends if they are looking for good brick oven pizza. Waiter was nice and the pizza came out fairly fast. There is usually some wait time to be seated so don't wait until you are too hungry to go.
(4)Nicole D.
I had no idea what to expect of this place. I did not look at the menu in advance either. I assumed it was a typical byob Italian place. I was wrong.. My companion and I tried to go here about a month ago but the wait was more than an hour. We tried again the other night and although there was a 40 minute wait, we decided to stick it out this time. I am glad that we did. The restaurant is small yet quaint... maybe 15 tables and only one that seats 5 or more. The menu reminded me of many restaurants I tried while out in Los Angeles. Farm to table goodness is what they present. The menu is small but desirable. The focus is on the brick oven pizza. We started with a 'Farmer's Salad' that was posted on the specials chalkboard. It was $12 and was made up of fresh urban greens, figs, walnuts, sun flower seeds, ricotta salata and a balsamic vinaigrette. It was a good size and just right for sharing between two people. Everything was fresh and delicious however the balsamic was a tad too sour. We then chose to share a small special pizza called 'Maple Bacon' which was $14. It was a brick oven pizza with fresh mozzarella, bacon, saute' yellow onions and maple syrup. It was divine. The bacon had a great flavor, the crust was crisp and smokey and the maple syrup really gave a nice contrast to the salty bacon. Along with that, we ordered a side of the meatballs which were $9. This is where my foodie emotions took over... BEST. MEATBALLS. EVER! And I have had many! They were super moist, perfectly seasoned, charred on the top and the sauce was savory and delicious. I dipped the pizza right into it and it made for a perfect meal. The staff are made up of mostly young people and they did a fine job of serving and presenting the food in a very timely manor in order to keep those tables turning. I can not wait to return! :-D
(5)Penelope M.
Yep, been back after three days because, because I can't help it. There was a 20-minute wait that was nothing to what you will experience. This time, we tried half Montagna and half Tartufi, ravioli cheese and meatballs. Wow! Those meatballs are perfect, not too big, not too small and the flavours will haunt you. I used the sauce to dip my pizza crust into. That pizza crust expanded and puffed beautifully with just the right burn underneath. Montagna was good until I took, a bite of Tartufi, and that's only because I love shrooms! It was earthy good melding into the sausage and mozzarella... um, um, umm. I haven't been this happy about pizza since Artichoke Basille's and I'm not likely to go there anymore. This place is awesome! The vibe is energetic. The people working here were hustling and our server is the best. She was efficient and gracious and oh, with an infectious smile.
(5)Ashley H.
Came for take out as the line was out the door and on the curb. Food was great, we will be back.
(4)Jenn K.
Everyone loves the pizza but it's the other dishes that make Arturo's really special. Sample them all!
(5)Nina S.
Love the pizza here, even better than the ones I've had in ny! It's Neapolitan style with fresh mozzarella and basil and that crispy on the outside chewy on the inside sinfully charred crust. My top three favorites are the hazelnut arugula salad with pears and balsamic dressing, the pizza (any of them.. seriously they're all good..) And the penne pasta with boar sausage ragu. The salad is just light and fresh and the hazelnuts elevate it to the next level. The pizza though is the only carb worth cheating with on cheat day. I don't know what that oven does but it's genius the way the pizza is bubbly hot on the top and nice and crusty on the bottom but still chewy in the middle. Perfection. And the penne pasta is actually finished off in the oven too so it comes out super hot! It's decently creamy and meaty and yet delicately balanced with herbs and mushrooms. Delish. A special item they have is the corn that is roasted with aioli sauce which reminds me of toro and toro can't be beat in this category but I'm not here to eat corn, I'm a carb-ivore! :)
(5)Ellie J.
Small pizzeria near maplewood train station. Has small parking area right beside of the restaurant. It is cozy and casual. I liked the ambience and decoration. We were first customers for the day but got filled up so quickly in an hour. We ordered sautéed kale, santos pizza and mushroom ravioli. They were all delicious. Staffs were friendly, service was attentive. It is also BYOB without corkage fee. I brought additional pizza to go on the way out. It was good but not as delicious as the one right out of the oven. If you love brick oven pizza, try this place. The long drive was worth for us to do. I'm definitely going back there!!
(5)Brian U.
Excellent pizza. We had the individual truffle pie and the pie with sausage, onion, and chili oil. Hot damn, both were delicious. We also had a beet salad which was just as good. Came here on a Saturday at 1:30 and were able to get a table easily. We will definitely return.
(5)Clara H.
Being a huge fan of razza in jersey city I had to try out their sister restaurant Arturo's! It did not disappoint. Arturo's is located in maplewood on the cutest street, it is a clean and welcoming restaurant with great friendly service. The pizzas on the menu were slightly different with the option for individual size or large. There were a few of my favorite pies from razza missing from the menu however it was nice to see that you could add toppings a la carte which is not a feature at Razza. Arturo's has a full pasta menu which I regret not trying but I will just need to go back! I had a mushroom pizza which was yummy, my mom had the white pizza which was good but a bit too bland for me. My dad had the margarita to which he added anchovies and mushrooms! We were all very pleased! Highly recommend!! We will be back!
(5)Brian L.
Since my last review, been here twice. Still great, still want it more and more each time. Pizza is best when piping hot, good when barely warm. Tried the plain pizza - don't get it, you can get the same flavor from a normal pizza joint. The best pizzas are their creations, most definitely the Santo. I want the Santo right now.
(5)Russell C.
Eaten here a few times and it has never disappointed! the food is always great and fresh. The pizza is incredible! the prices are extremely reasonable for the quality of food that arturos puts out.
(4)Luciana C.
Small place, but absolutely worth the wait. And there is a liquor store right down the street- convenient to grab wine since it is BYOB here. The decor is also very quaint, and I love how they write their specials on the chalk walls and serve water in wine bottles. Staff is also very friendly! Now, most importantly, the food! My boyfriend started off with the special salad (Farmer's Salad) and it was ok. Arugula was hard to mouth and the mushrooms were ok. But... the pizza here is absolutely delicious. We shared the large Montagna pie and finished every last bite. Even the last piece of speck that fell off the pizza onto the tray. Will be dreaming about the tasty pizza and perfect crust until next time...
(5)Johncarlos V.
Don't be alarmed by how the pizza looks because the taste is just absolute. The place always manages to be packed but service was just excellent, fast, and efficient. They have all types of specialty pizza or you can always go with a classic cheese pizza and top it off with what ever your favorite topping is. Was also told pasta is great but didn't get a chance to try it always manage to grab some tasty pizza. hopefully on my next visit i can try out the bake ziti.
(3)Mike L.
I have traveled all over the country and world trying different pizza. I don't know why this place has received such high reviews. It was subpar pizza, I was unable to even finish two slices and my friend wasn't able to finish one slice because it was so terrible. Stay far away, I do not recommend. Plus the wait time was over 40 minutes and it was a very claustrophobic restaurant.
(1)Caryn B.
Great pizza! Very nice wait staff! Very cute little place. You must visit this place if you are in Maplewood!
(5)Lorraine C.
I've been going to Arturo's for the past year and a half and I have always enjoyed the service, food and had a wonderful time. There is no other way to describe how much I love Arturo's beside an obsession. Generally I order the ricotta crostini, which are phenomenal. You get two so it's a good plate to share with a pair. Then I get the personal margarita pizza and that is always out of this world. This year Aruto's made the top 25 restaurants in NJ with notable pizza, and I can tell you they'll stay on this list forever. It's really that good. I've ordered their pasta, salads and side vegetables. All cooked perfectly, seasoned well and delicious. There are not enough good things to say about Arturo's, beside thank you!
(5)Bailey P.
By far the best pizza I have had in a while. Arturo's should definitely be in your rotation if you love a great pie made with fresh and local ingredients. I love the fact that Arturo's supports local farms and uses the only the best ingredients. Arturo's is small and popular, so be prepared to wait for a table. They do not take reservations, which I think is a good thing here. Wait times could be up to an hour or more, but well worth it. My wife and I waited about 30 minutes on a Sunday evening at 7:30. The staff is very accommodating and will supply glasses if you want to open your wine while you wait. Arturo's is BYOB. The pizzas were cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious. The crust is one of the best I've had, rustic, flavorful and perfectly crisp. The individual size pies are much bigger then I expected and plenty for one. We only ate about half of each pie and left full with the leftovers. We got a white pie and the "Santo," which has tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, sausage, onion, and roasted chili oil. The white was good but the santo was definitely my favorite. The flavor of this pie was amazing and had just the right amount of heat with the chili oil. Arturo's will without a doubt be in my rotation of great places to eat. I live about 25 minutes away, and will happily make the trip back and wait for a table for this pizza.
(5)Ari A.
This place was a great pizzeria back in the day, but what they've done with it now is fabulous. On Saturdays they have a food tasting (reservations required) that seem to be a nice way to experience their food. I have had both the thick and thin crust, both were great. The Margherita is their specialty, but truly every pizza looks amazing. Last time I went I shared the Pesto penne with chicken. Pastas always come with a tiny house salad made from fresh veggies. For some reason this was not as good as it should have been, perhaps the cheese to pesto ratio. I don't think there is anything on the menu I wouldn't try and I would definitely recommend. Pros: BYOB, great price, fast service, friendly faces, and hipster looking waiters. Cons: outdoor tables for 2 are small. We ordered a large pie and pasta and they had to be served separately to fit on the table.
(5)nycsep n.
Everyone has already commented on their awesome pizza - but their Mushroom Truffle Ravioli is OUT. OF. THIS. WORLD! I also love love love their kale salad. The good news is that there are options for those that don't want a pizza or have had recent pizza overload. The town (an surrounding towns is so packed with pizza joints that it's nice to have one serve multiple types of food preferences. The only reason it's not a 5 star is that it is almost always impossible to get a table. Perhaps that's part of the draw - who knows. I'm fine with a little wait but this place is always wall to wall.
(4)Thiago T.
Great pizza, I had the margarita. Sauce, cheese are very good, and crust is chewy in a good way. Ravioli al forno is also excellent. Service was quick and attentive, price very fair and the usual for this type of restaurant. The only reason it gets a 4 instead of 5 stars is because while the pizza is fantastic, i felt the crust didn't pack as much flavor as I've tasted in a few other Neapolitan pizzerias. But a very enjoyable pizza regardless.
(4)Timothy S.
This is the best restaurant in a 10 mile radius (sorry Lorena's). Fresh healthy ingredients and friendly, attentive staff. I've never had anything less that a wonderful experience. I crave the Santo pizza at all times!
(5)Kimberly H.
One of my favorite pizza restaurants!! My favorite pizza by far is the Montagna, which is arugula and prosciutto. Sooo good. The tartuffi and the margherita pizza are good as well. It's BYOB and very reasonably priced! The wait can be ridiculous if you go during peak hours on the weekend. So try to go early or for lunch if you don't want to wait!
(4)China D.
Amazing food everytime! Definitely worth the wait. I always get a half margherita half bianco pizza since I can never decide. I recommend getting the meatballs, they are the best I've ever had next to my mom's, plus they serve them in a dish full of sauce that I like to dip my pizza crust in.
(5)Reggie F.
Good food, BYOB, be prepared to wait for a table. Pleasant staff!
(4)Khalid N.
One of the best pies in all of NJ. And that is saying a lot. Great food with fresh ingredients. I love the Margarita and the Mushroom pie with onions. I will definitely be frequenting this place.
(5)Steve K.
Outstanding pizza. Perfect crust. Seating is annoying. Inside is crowded - not calming. We waited about 30 minutes on Saturday night which was fine. We were seated at a table outside but I faced the sun and the umbrellas were not positioned to help at that time of day. The sun was blinding even with sunglasses. We asked for another table and were told that there would be another 30 minute wait. I asked if we were being put on the bottom of the wait list and the server said yes. I said that wasn't fair and the server got the hostess who moved us to another table in 2 minutes. My wife had a salad (a little expensive) and the meatballs. They were fine. In short, I loved the pizza. It was amazing but I have no desire to sit inside and outside is ok. I would go back though but would go at a quieter time.
(5)Deana M.
Favorite brick oven pizza place ever!!! The Tartufi pizza is one of the best, tastiest things I have ever eaten! The ingredients are fresh & most are local buys which is just an added bonus, especially on something you didn't think could get any better! It's a BYOB & service is fantastic. :)
(5)A-Larenee D.
Great service, great food ! I've been here twice and it's honestly some of the best thin crust pizza I've had in NJ!
(5)Mallary E.
Pizza is truly delicious! It's just so hard to get a table. We ordered out last Friday night instead of trying and we called at 6:45 to find out that there was a lull and we actually got our pizza and salad in 20 minutes!! Blanca pizza with prosciutto! Mmmm!!!! Really delicious here :)
(5)Spencer L.
Delicious, artisanal pizza with farm to table ingredients. The arugula pizza almost melts in your mouth. The downside is that the place is very small so I've had to wait around 45 minutes each time I've went, but there's a bar across the street, and it's BYOB, so they'll open your bottle of wine, give you glasses, and you can drink while you wait. I recently saw that it was ranked in the top 50 restaurants in NJ by Zagat and have to say I'm not surprised.
(4)E V.
Everything was so fresh and delicious. One of the best meals I've had in a long time. Love everything about Arturo's, you just need to go and see for yourself!!!
(5)Demi J.
Brick oven pizza with a perfect crust every time. Ingredients are always fresh, lots of salad specials tonight the mixed baby greens w apples topped w creamy Brie was a hit. Love that you can BYOB Favorite
(4)Adam D.
For the two years I was in grad school at Seton Hall, I used to hear students rave about this place. For all the hype, my visit to Arturo's was long overdue ... 5 stars for the service. Very friendly. We couldn't get a table inside on a Thursday at 8:00 so they sat us outside, warned of us of the impending rain (which never came), and offered to pack up our food if necessary. Our waitress Nichole (spelling?) was also very helpful with the menu selections, even though there weren't that many options. Because there was so little to choose from, everything tasted so fresh. Arturo's maintains a small menu, yet regularly attracts a busy crowd. My guess is this allows them to cycle through their inventory rather quickly to ensure their ingredients never go bad. Although everything tasted fresh, most of the menu is quite simple and lacks creativity. I do like the addition of truffle oil to the white pizza (bianco), which had delicious crust. But the beet salad, for example, was pretty much just beets and goat cheese. I don't think it would hurt to add a little more arugula or perhaps some nuts, but maybe that's just my opinion. Also, when we asked for extra parmesan cheese for our pasta special, we were brought the typical shaker. I was hoping for the block of parmesan grated by the table side. These are some minor adjustments that could really elevate this place to the level of five stars. But for now, I'm going with four ... Overall, the service was great, and the food was good, but if you're looking for that 'wow' factor, you might be disappointed. One plus: BYOB!
(4)Rob D.
Undoubtedly, one of my favorite pizza places! The crust always comes out perfectly crispy and charred. The Tartufi pizza with white truffle oil is undoubtedly a winner! I'm not a big fan of sausage and usually have them sub pepperoni instead...my mouth is already starting to water... Next try the wile mushroom ravioli - this is the pasta to beat on the menu. It's silky smooth with a nice lingering taste in your mouth. One more thing before I forget, try the beet salad! It's a great way to start a meal! This review is already making me hungry! I'll probably have to pay 'em a visit tomorrow! Note: the only negative is that the restaurant is teeny-tiny and usually has a long wait during prime time hours. So, maybe opt for takeout instead.
(5)Gabrielle P.
Food here was great! Came here for my friends birthday. Awesome that it's BYOB. Had the meatball ricotta pizza which was okay. The margarita pizza and the white pizza were out of this world. Highly recommend and can't wait to go back!
(4)Evan S.
It's been nearly 1 year since my wife and I moved from New Jersey back to Massachusetts, and not a single day has gone by that we haven't missed taking a big bite of Arturo's delicious pizza, meatballs and salads! Every meal started the same way, we would always order the famous Polpette Al Forno (meatballs), the Crostini and their special farm salad of the day. The meatballs are so tender and flavorful. We would always save the extra sauce from the meatballs to dip our pizza crusts, because nothing compares to their fresh & sweet Jersey tomato sauce. The Crostini featured their homemade ricotta cheese which was finished with the most amazing sea salt to make for the perfect bite. All of the salads were great and showcased local produce. I would highly recommend the margarita pizza with truffle oil. The crust was thin and crispy yet somehow managed to be chewy. It was simply incredible! All of the pasta dishes are delicious as well and can't be beat. Everything on the menu was a hit. The wait staff was really friendly and always took the time to make our weekly visits memorable.
(5)Dina C.
We had the special salad and the wild boar penne pasta that comes with it's own salad. The wife had the sausage pizza in personal size which could absolutely feed a fAmily. Was yummy and we will for sure return. As the reviews Imply it is worth the trip.
(5)Krista B.
Great experience. They didn't have a table, so we said we go across the street for a drink at Coda's bar and the hostess offered to chill our champagne. Came back after a drink and the table was ready. The owner checked in on us personally and helped us make choices from the menu. The kale Caesar salad was excellent--the dressing generous yet not heavy or thick. The roasted corn with aoili was a nice seasonal touch. Ricotta crostini was delish, the ricotta so creamy and slightly sweep. My cavatelli Siciliano was cooked perfectly but a bit bland, but I had asked for it w/o garlic. Maybe more anchovy paste and pine nuts to amp up the flavor, some sundried tomato strips? I wish they had dessert, but it's a great little neighborhood go-to.
(4)Bobby Y.
Wow. Pretty amazing pizza. Wood-fired, ultra thin-crust style, but NOT burnt and not skimpy on the toppings. Bring your own beer/wine is cool. Try to go off-peak hours because there just aren't many seats. Pizza crust is perfectly crispy and chewy at the same time. Exemplary! Saw an Arturo's in SoHo the next day in NYC - so what if it is a chain, I don't care. It's freaking good pizza. It's the kind of pie that's instantly a star above every other pizza joint in the land. And two stars above every other pizza joint outside of the tri-state area that dares put the words 'New York' or 'NY' in their name. (e.g. the very crappy Wiseguy NY Pizza in Wash DC, the barely passable New York Pizza in Aspen CO)
(5)C L.
Our go to for local pizza. Have not tried their salads but they look excellent. The staff is young but very friendly. The place is small and unfortunately closes between lunch and dinner which is unfortunate when you walk by at 3pm on a Saturday. Casual, good flavor and BYOB makes this a great little gem.
(4)M C.
Absolutely divine. The best pizza experience, so many flavors combos, unique and unusual and so tasty. Now I know people come here for all the other amazing dishes too, and I love those as well, but nothing beats their gourmet pizza. Our fave was the Montagna. And that crust? Mmmmm. Miss it like mad out here in California. Nothing comes close in the Bay Area. Never bothered to dine in: too crowded, to long of a wait and seating is a little too cozy for my taste. Take out was always a great option.
(5)Agustin K.
It was a 40-50 minute wait but I can understand why. Service was great. BYOB. The pizza wasn't the best I've had but it was pretty good. Next time we'll skip the pasta. Salad and sautéed collard green were my favorites! So fresh and crunchy!
(4)Marc C.
The best. 2 apps, large pie, 2 pastas....$61. All of it excellent. No wonder people line up outside at 4:45pm for a table. EXCELLENT pizza.
(5)Larry C.
We really enjoying coming here for lunch, food is awesome and so is the service, really don't mind driving half hr to get here. Got to try their wild boar pasta, different kinds of gourmet pizza and salads.
(4)Jennifer R.
Ok there is only one thing I can say positively about Arturo's. Their pizza crust is good. But the pizza is good at so many other places too! Their menu has never changed. Their salads are just not done well. The concepts, ingredients and descriptions are enticing, but the execution... Their execution is completely lacking follow through. And the service.... Omg! simply put: unaccommodating. The owners seemed to have opened an upscale deli. It's upsetting that this is considered a restaurant. Yes! I left no stars. Until I realized, yelp won't post with out a star?!!!!!!! Not worth it.
(1)Rob P.
How could this place be soo good? I keep coming back...pizza is wonderful, the people are great, the mushroom ravioli is ridiculous, and the fresh seasonal greens side is the humble star of the show. This is the only byob place I've ever waited a half hour at the door to get into on a Tuesday night, and I'd wait again if I had to. Keep doing what you guys do.
(5)Nora R.
We love to eat in Arturo's, it's a Maplewood classic where everything is delicious! My favorite was a seasonal pizza with zucchini and goat cheese. Make sure you get there early to get a table!
(5)John C.
Great quality food! I feel like I am ethically doing the right thing as a consumer of this Resturant as they have the farm to table concept down tap. Great pizza, sandwiches and salads. Prices are reasonable with large portions.
(5)Di P.
My high school friends and I try to meet up around the holidays when people are back in town visiting family so I suggested we try Arturo's and emailed them the Yelp! link so they could decide. My friend Jon wrote back, "Well, if Richard S. says it's the best pizza he's ever had in his life, then we GOTS to go!" That made me laugh. Arturo's is a great, quiet lil spot with a friendly young staff. My friends weren't used to BYOBs so it shocked them a little. I adore BYOBs because it brings down the cost of meals and encourages increased booziness levels which usually leads to people saying a lot of strange-ass things, which I love. Arturo's is really like many wood-fired pizzerias that have been popping up all over Philly. But why this place is such a gem in Maplewood is because it uses local ingredients and there are a lot of inventive and interesting items on the menu alongside your go-to favorites.
(4)Jenn J.
Pizza was very good, tasty w/ fresh ingredients. The hostess was friendly/cordial. The only thing I disliked was the long wait to be seated and also the fact that our waiter kept insisting on us getting the individual size rather than the large one we wanted. Will give it another try!
(4)Dimple A.
The best pizza ever! We go there weekly! Service is great!, food is awesome! The BEST pizza!
(5)Linda G.
After just visiting and reviewing the Maplewood Country Club, and after eating at Arturo's twice this season, I may just move to the town of Maplewood! This is my first farm to table restaurant experience; after looking into other, very pricy places, I was a little hesitant to go at first - but a co-worker was treating us, so I couldn't say 'no'! It's a BYOB, but the first time I went, we were on a business lunch (the 2nd time, I was with my hubby and my mom, so we brought a bottle of wine - there's a liquor store across the street just in case). The food is out of this world! Freshly cooked and locally grown. We had the ricotta crostini with black sea salt and drizzled with olive oil - I could just eat these for dinner!! We also had the mushroom ravioli (I think between the 8 of us we split 4 plates for appetizers), the arugula salad, and then we split a couple of their brick oven pizzas. At the risk of looking like a little piggy, I refrained from eating what I wanted and as much as I wanted, but when I went back with my husband and my mom, we ordered pretty much the same things and I ate like a queen!!! We are looking forward to our next trip back, that time, maybe we'll try something different, but whatever it is, I'm sure it'll be fantastic! Oh - some of the seating is communal seating, the 2nd time, the 3 of us ended up at a table for 8 and they sat 3 other people with us. It was fine - they were a little odd and afterward we wondered if they thought the same about us! LOL - but it is a small place and apparently the wait can be quite lengthy at peak hours (they open at 11:30 on the weekdays, and for our work luncheon we made reservations since there was 8 of us - we arrived at 11:30, and by 11:45 the place was packed. Dinner with my family was around 5:00 mid-week and we were OK, but by the time we left, once again...packed. We went there before a Papermill Playhouse show)
(5)Sarah-Jane M.
This place is really great. They offer all fresh, farm to table food, which I really appreciate. My favorite pizza is the Santo and Montagna. If going with one other person I recommend getting two individual sizes of each and then a small plate or pasta. I really don't like mushrooms (something about the texture), but the mushroom ravioli is absolutely delicious. It might be the truffle oil that is in the sauce. I despise mushrooms and could bathe in truffle oil, so I guess that makes the happy medium for me. The farm fresh specials that they have everyday are always great. Currently they are on a cauliflower kick and it's a good one! Make sure you get there early or bring an extra bottle of wine to drink to keep warm while you wait outside.
(5)Kim H.
The pizza here is amazing. They usually have a special salad and special pizza of the day. The place is BYOB but there is a liquor store nearby. Expect a wait though. I waited about 45 minutes for a table on a Friday night.
(4)Andre P.
C'mon, like I'm going to give Arturo's anything less than 5 stars. Phenomenal pizza in the Naples style with a big-enough salad. Friendly staff, child friendly, and BYOB means you can hit up either of the two very close liquor stores for a bottle of wine, of which I recommend a big body Napa cab. FYI, Arturo's does not sell oysters. To my surprise, osteria is not a type of oyster bar.
(5)G B.
I think I found a new spot! had the Margherita pizza individual size. yummers!!!! so fresh and delicious. also had this appetizer that's toast with ricotta, olive oil, and Black Sea salt. that was excellent. gets very busy at nite but it was a great place.
(5)Deborah L.
Always the freshest ingred ! The local produce is a bonus. If in Jersey City check out the sister restaurant Razza.
(5)Sha P.
On our drive back from NYC, we stopped here for dinner last night. We had the special(pepper and sausage) and the Bianco. Pizzas were descent nothing to go crazy about. I liked the decor. Service was great but food was just ok. I was super hungry and still wasn't blown away, so 3 star for the food. If I could separate it I'd give 4 stars for the service. Our waitress was super sweet.
(3)Joyce C.
Pretty good but nothing special. I would definitely recommend trying this place but it's not that great. The food was good but overall pretty underwhelming.
(3)Greg T.
As a former restaurant/pizzeria owner this is our go to place if I am not making it at home. The pizza is fantastic from the dough to the ingredients and is always perfectly charred from the wood-fired ovens. The seasonal menu is great and the constantly have innovative specials. We also enjoy the Saturday tasting menu and the ability to call ahead to pair your wine with the multiple courses. The only reason they are not 5 stars is no reservations. The wait can be up to an hour. Guys, get a bigger place or take reservations, we would be there more often.
(4)Lyn S.
We went on a Saturday & It was packed so we decided to do take out. The pizza was excellent. We also got some pasta and the meatballs which were also just as great. We will be going back, just not on a Saturday night because I guess everyone else knows how good the food is there as well.
(5)Kurtis P.
In an area over-run with pizza choices, Arturo's really stands out. It's not your normal pizzeria and shouldn't be treated as such. My wife and I had a nice, relaxing dinner outside the other night and have to say that we now understand all of the hype we've heard because they far surpassed it all. We started with the Antipasto Americano, which was a very decent sized plate for two people to share. The fresh meats and mozzarella were fantastic. For our main meal we each ordered an individual size pizza to share. I went with the Tartuffi which was amazing in composition along with the truffle oil. My wife had the Bianco which was a nice balance of flavor with the right amount of cheese. The pizza's were nice and crispy and evenly cooked throughout (which is often difficult with a thin crust pizza). It really set the bar pretty high for artisan pizzas in the area. Another plus is that its BYOB. The drawback, as many have mentioned is that the inside seating area is very, very small (which gets compounded even more so with an incredibly long wait). The other negative part of our experience was the service. It seemed as though the wait staff were a little disoriented and really didn't have it all together. Either way, the food speaks for itself and they've definitely gained 2 new loyal customers.
(4)Paul K.
I met a friend (and therefore this review may be prejudiced by that very nice event) for lunch there -- the service was perfect; the food was very good; and the price was right. We sat outside, so I am not able to comment on the ambiance inside; but, the outside sidewalk seating was very pleasant.
(5)David L.
It has become one of my favorite places to eat and invite others to enjoy the wonderful pastas and fresh pizza. Everything I have tried has been a delight. They would have 5 if it weren't the lack of meat options..
(4)Stefanie Z.
This place has wood fired pizza yum!!! The first time we got take out and ordered Tartufi pizza (mushrooms, truffle oil, sausages) but they gave us the wrong pizza. It was still delicious so that's ok. Last night we came back and ordered the Marguerita pizza and it was delicious! The appetizers are so good too. The prices are really good here too since they get their fruits and vegetables locally and sustainably. We love it here, everything from the hot smoking wood fired pizza, to the atmosphere, to the super friendly service...we will definitely come back again to try the pasta!!! update: took my parents here...and my mom said it was one of the best pizzas she's ever had, she loves the Tartufi. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE TARTUFI PIZZA and an order of Pasta Chingale (wild boar).
(5)S F.
Great wood fired pizza. A little authentic char on the crust. I like the special mushroom pizza. Locally sourced salad ingredients change with the seasons. Garbanzo bean starter was great. Can be a wait, smallish place.
(5)Freyja G.
We've ordered take out pizzas from Arturo's a few times and they have been some of the best pizzas I have ever eaten, and that includes Lombardi's, John's, Fornino, etc, etc. The crust is really perfect -- yeasty, chewy, flavorful and delicious. We finally got the chance to eat in last night and had a great meal of superb, truffle-redolent mushroom ravioli, penne with tomato and pancetta, and ceasar salad. The service was very friendly and competent and the food is truly special and delicious. In comparison to any restaurant in Manhattan or Brooklyn Arturo's completely holds its own, with the added benefits of being extremely well-priced and friendly. One added bonus we really appreciated was the small-child friendly bathroom. We can't wait to come back!
(5)Emil H.
Unbelievable pizza. Really, fantastic -- and I say that as someone who just moved to the suburbs after spending over a decade living in Manhattan. The ingredients they use are high quality, which makes a difference. Like most restaurants in the area, it's BYOB, which I actually have come to prefer. They didn't charge us a corking fee. The set up inside is a little unique: there's a hostess to seat you, but then you have to walk up to the counter to order... but a server will bring the food to your table, and the hostess brings you the check. Not a bad thing, just unusual.
(5)Kep T.
What can I say that hasn't ready been said? This place has the best pizza in New Jersey.
(5)Ben C.
Had lunch on a weekday. Many restaurants in town were not busy, but Arturo's was full of happy people - it's a small to medium sized place with an open kitchen. Tasteful dark decor with music playing in the background - and a spotless and nice looking bathroom. You have to appreciate how few places get it right to understand how good Arturo's is. I had a simple Margharita pizza with a side of sauteed arugula. The crust on the pizza was phenomenal - it TASTED yeasty and bready, but was thin without getting cracker-like. I can't over-compliment the "bite" of the pie - perfect. The sauce was delicious and the cheese was obviously top quality. It was cooked to perfection and served piping hot - everything was still moist and it smelled heavenly. The arugula came in it's own little cast iron pan - perfectly cooked and seasoned. The guys serving the food are young and eager - and observant. Service was excellent without getting unctuous. The staff saw I was enjoying my meal --- and appreciated it. This is a place full of humble and kind people - it shows in everything they do. One of the owners, Fred, introduced himself. He was clearly proud of his restaurant and he should be. As far as people complaining about 4 and 5 star reviews, I think the system works and giving this place three stars tells me that you may want to work on your illusions self-importance so you can stop tromping on other people's hard work (BTW, ever notice the correlation between overly fussy facial hair and asshattiness? Yep, that's how you're similar to Armond White).
(5)Chris M.
Arturos is our go to spot! Best pizza in area and love they use fresh ingredients that are locally sourced. Try the ceci & crostini. Speciality pies always rock! Love going here for lunch and getting the fresh mozzarella sandwich. Come early as you can be waiting awhile for this popular local spot.
(5)Elisabeth C.
I had high hopes for this place because it has a great ambience and courteous waitstaff and the food looks good. The salad was great - delicious and fresh if expensive. But I have not had pizza in months and I was really looking forward to it. The pie had a delicious sauce and great cheese and the proportions of both were perfect but the crust was very thick and gummy in most of the pie and too thin in one part. The ingredients were awesome, it must have been that the person who made the pizza was not adequately trained. I was psyched, everything was awesome about this place except for the whole reason i went there. The crust was not thin and crunchy it was bready and bagel-like. WHAT A BUMMER.
(3)Jen H.
I am so happy Arturo's Osteria is in Maplewood. The entire menu delicious from the meatballs, to the pizza and salads. It is definitely a feel good spot. My husband and I do have to wait most of the time for a table but it is nothing more then 10- 20 minutes and it is worth the wait! Staff is more then happy to pour you a glass of wine while you wait! Make sure you ask about the specials... they are always tasty, local and in season. I am a creature of habit so I am very predictable with what I order but my husband always is happy with the "Specials."
(5)Anthony T.
This is a great solid 3 star pizzeria. I have to admit I'm a bit dumbfounded by all the 5 star reviews. This is good pizzia, good service, an OK atmosphere and that's it. There is equally good food and pizzia all over Jersey and NYC so I'm trying to see what I'm missing. I've been here a dozen times with friends and we all feel the same. Great place to grab a bite before catching a movie or a quick dinner with the family on week-night, but nothing special. A bit pricey for what it is, but you won't feel dissapointed.
(3)Gina O.
Love this place! BYO makes it even better. Always a wait but worth it!
(5)George S.
Been here a couple times, the margarita pizza is amazing. Haven't experience too much of the menu though. It can be difficult to get a table since the place is somewhat small and popular, so take that into account before going.
(5)Lorde E.
I do not give out 5 star ratings as a general rule. However this pizza is out of this world. In my opinion, it's as good as it gets. Seriously, I could eat here 5 nights a week. The ricotta crostini is one of the simplest most amazing things I have ever eaten. The pasta dishes are phenomenal, the salads (although I am not a salad guy) are beautiful! The homemade bread is lights out. I really could go on and on. But my favorite thing here is the margherita, it IS perfection.
(5)Rob S.
Pretty serious pizza and pasta there, no doubt. Service leaves a little to be desired (app and main brought at same time), but with a screaming toddler much is forgivable. Good food, decent price, I'll be back.
(4)Phil M.
While trying hard not to sound like Armond White against all these 4 and 5 stars, the place was decent (as in I would return), but hardly worth the accolades being thrown at it. The bread they give you is honestly a work of art. The perfect combination of a crunchy outside with an almost oily center that made it a hit. The fire-roasted broccoli was simple yet very good. I had their barley soup which was a bit bland and lacking a strong backbone, passable. The meatballs were very good, and the sauce that accompanied them was even better. Simple execution, but that's where its beauty lay. Like a lot of reviews have stated, the crostini was great. The ricotta was cool and buttery, with a touch of olive oil and coarse grated black pepper. Again, a simple presentation that paid high dividends. Are you starting to see a running theme? The place prides itself on letting the local ingredients shine without losing its flavor in overcomplicated sauces, and I really liked that. The pizza was good, not great. After reading the reviews on yelp, I was expecting to be blown away. That could have been my fault, but I will say the crust was good. I had the wild boar with penne and mushrooms which was tasty, but could have used a little salt and the boar was either overcooked or didn't have enough of fat to keep it moist. The best dish I tired that night was my girlfriends wild mushroom ravioli, which was AMAZING. One of the best raviolis I've had in some time. Do not pass up on this dish. It is the perfect size to split with a few people as an appetizer too. In regard to the atmosphere, it's tight, but not cramped. It had a hip vibe to it with its "coffee house" meets "rustic" theme. Service was adequate if not a little on the young side. They could really benefit with having a few more experienced palates to sell the dishes better.
(3)Michael K.
For dinner here, I started with the salumi misti, a large platter of three kinds of charcuterie, including good prosciutto and boar salami, served with crusty homemade bread on the side ($14.50). Followed with a sognatori salad (mixed greens, toasted hazelnuts, sliced anjou pears, and robiola cheese, $9.95). It didn't seem to have any dressing on it. Lastly, a small Montagna pizza (mozz, parmigiano, arugula, and speck, $12.50). The crust had a nice char from the wood-burning oven, but was too thick and bready. I prefer a thinner, crispier crust. They don't serve dessert, so I walked over to the Strawberry Fields yogurt bar down the block. Arturo's was OK, but it certainly didn't wow me.
(3)Mark V.
As far as a derscription goes...it is a simple BYOB pizza spot in Maplewood village. I have been looking for decent, local, wood-fired brick oven pizza in the area and am happy to say that I found it at Arturo's, twice.. in this week alone. The menu is short and simple, just like the ingredients for their dishes. They use locally sourced ingredients to ensure that their food is as fresh as possible. There are only a few tables and it fills up quick, so I would suggest take out. Enjoy.
(5)Sara Z.
Very good find thanks to Yelp!!!! I really liked how they source local markets/growers for fresh products. Service was good and they were very accomodating. I will definitely be back.
(4)Eshwary Y.
The pizza here is delicious! The crust is warm, light, and has just the right amount of crispiness. If you go on a busy night, make sure you make reservations! This place can get packed! Did I tell you it is a BYOB place?
(5)Omar B.
Amazing service! I still prefer Dani Pizza (kew gardens ny) but this pizza and service is really good!
(5)Benson H.
Since my last review, Arturo's has introduced a further refinement of their product--a captured Italian "wild" yeast. The result is that their crust, as well as their bread, has become more intensely flavored than ever, blending a sweet, acidity with golden carmel overtones. Ok, maybe that sounded a bit like a pretentious wine review, but I think it is right. Look, it is really, really, really good. I don't think you can make a bad choice, but my recommendation (traditional crust) remains, simply because it gives you more opportunities to eat bread.
(5)Brian H.
Excellent! The pizza as well as the other items on the menu are great. And they locally source veggies when available.
(5)Ken M.
Great food, great service.. I just wish they had more seats
(5)Lynn C.
I grew up in Millburn and I'm shocked I only visited Arturos recently. Such a great restaurant! I went with my boyfriend for lunch and shared the sognatori salad and small margarita pizza with meatballs. Both were enough to share. We will definitely be back to make up for lost time.
(5)Caroline L.
We are used to NYC brick oven quality (Patsy's) so we were disappointed. We had the Tartufi. The cheese fell off the crust and it wasn't fresh. The Margarita pizza looks good though
(2)Alex K.
Consistently outtanding -- terrific brick oven pizzas, amazing mushroom ravioli, and the pasta with boar ragu is also great. Owner/Chef Dan uses local ingredients and changes up the menu with seasonal specials --- he really knows how to work with veggies and the salad specials are always on target. Also great for lunch -- their home-baked breads are out of this world - you can take them to go, but they are pricey.... I almost hate to give it a review since its already pretty hard to get a table most nights...
(5)Jason F.
Really good. Prices are higher end for pizza. Small menu but, judging from the smiles on everyone around us there's nothing on the menu short of their reputation. Recommend if you r in town looking for sit down gourmet pizza.
(4)B H.
Delicious home made soup, a farmer salad with local ingredients and some house made Italian bread makes for a great Saturday lunch. (A marvelous bottle of wine (BYOB) makes it perfect.
(5)Brian S.
Love this place, nice thin base crust with ultra fresh toppings. Split the Magnata with a coworker, comes out with piles of fresh green dandelions, looks like a salad. Almost makes pizza seem healthy. The small can feed 2 people easily, we opted for the large so my guest was able to take 2 slices home and enjoy again for dinner. Definitely a must if you're nearby.
(5)Kait S.
Ended up here after wandering the cute Maplewood Village looking for a place to eat. On a Tuesday night at about 7:15, the wait was 20 minutes for two people to sit indoors, but we could sit outside immediately. We chose the outdoor seating, and it was great -- only downside is that the seating area is quite crammed, and the "for two" tables were very tiny. The menu had enough to make me want to come back several times to try all of the pizzas and pastas, but my date and I settled on splitting a medium pizza. Unfortunately our waitress seemed a bit turned off by the fact that we weren't ordering a ton of food--I can't blame her, small bill equals a smaller tip. But the "Parma" pie that we got was still delicious. A blend of gorgonzola, mozzarella, parmigiano, romano and provolone cheese with freshly sliced plum tomatoes and plenty of basil for seasoning. What perfect blend of cheeses, nothing too thick, greasy or congealed like the cheese you'd see a top a NY-style pizzeria. It was melted to perfection. I would definitely go back. With the intent of ordering more food (there are some pasta dishes that sounded and looked to-die-for), I'd opt for a seat inside so I didn't risk pushing any dishes off the tiny outdoor tables.
(4)Stacey C.
This place gets better and better. Dan and Fred really know what they're doing. The pizzas are AMAZING, as is the homemade bread. Don't miss the crostini w/ fresh ricotta, scary good. Polpette (meatballs) are light and fluffy with a great sauce and the ceci salad is to die for. I love this place, wish everyone else didn't, so we could get in more often!
(5)Lisa H.
Great pizza, great service. Will be back
(5)Joe L.
This has been my all time favorite local spot. The Owner and Chef Dan along with his business parther Fred have taken what used to be a small corner pizza spot and have turned it into one of the hottest spots in town serving up some of the best pastas and pizzas along with his creative touch to farm fresh vegetables. My all time favorite is the Pasta Chingale (Wild Boar) and the Tartufi pizza. Another interesting fact , since Dan took over this Restaurant he has always prepared all the dishes in his brick oven with only a small burner in the kitchen. Its a BYO which I always prefer. Check out my review for their newly opened Restaurant on Grove St in Jersey City......
(5)Craven M.
I absolutely love Arturo's. Best pizza I have had this side of the Hudson (or at least west of Hoboken). The ingredients are fresh and from what I am told, from local farms. You must be prepared to wait, but its well worth it. It's BYOB as well, so you can save some coins and enjoy a bottle form your own collection.
(4)Susan J.
I've done a lot of traveling in Italy and I can say that eating at Arturo's is the closest I've come to having an authentic Italian dining experience in the tri-state area. Just as in Italy, where the best food is most often found at the more casual trattoria/osteria establishments, this is off-the-charts phenomenal, locally-sourced food served in a casual, relaxed setting. Dan Richer, Arturo's chef/owner, is passionate about using the highest quality ingredients and supporting local growers and producers and his commitment to providing customers with only the best is evident in every bite. The personable Fred Shandler, Dan's business partner and dining room manager, ensures that customers have a pleasant dining experience. Arturo's has recently changed their "traditional" pizza dough. It was good before, but now it's incredible. For those of you lucky enough to have tasted Anthony Mangieri's pizza at Una Pizza Napoletana in nyc, this dough is similar in taste and texture and it has the slight char around the edges that characterizes traditional Neapolitan pizza. It's tangy and chewy with a creamy mouthfeel...topped with fresh tomato sauce, fresh mozz and fresh basil (the margherita)...it's just, well, freakin' delicious. Another must-try is the 6 course tasling menu that is served on Saturday and Tuesday nights. My favorite course is almost always the hand made pasta. It's egg-based pasta in the style of the Piemonte region of Italy ...rich, unctuous and addicting! Reservations are only accepted for the tasting menu and tables can be hard to come by so be prepared for a wait. It's worth it!!
(5)Adam S.
Got a thin crust pepperoni here. I thought it was an above average pizza that tasted nice with a good char to the crust, some tasty cheese, and a pretty good sauce. The staff was nice and friendly. My only criticism is that the pizza is not particularly large, especially for the price you are paying for it. Despite this, however, I will happily return here if I get the chance.
(4)Paulette S.
Great fresh ingredients from local farms. Everything tastes excellent. BYOB makes it an even better sell. Prepare to wait for a table. But the food is worth the wait.
(5)Andrew D.
I love Arturo's. My wife and I come here about three times a month. It has become a destination to go when we are entertaining peeps from out of town. The food is created with skill and creativity, without scrimping on the basics. I find myself craving the margherita pizza even as I'm chomping down on the more elaborate foods. The menu rotates frequently as ingredients become available throughout the year, sometimes even on a weekly basis. The owners push a kind of local/sustainable food profile, and get most or all of their produce from NJ growers. It looks like everything they serve is made in-house, and they take a whole chalkboard to brag about their breadmaking process. The best part is that it is very reasonably priced, and BYOB. So you can pick up a decent bottle of wine down the street at the wine shop (not the one on the main drag, the one around the corner from the Irish bar--the one on the main drag is snooty and I don't like them... review pending), drag it in there and get a pizza and have a whole meal for two or three for the price of a single entree at Les Halles.
(5)Katie J.
Arturo's in Maplewood is super delicious. First of all, if Maplewood isn't the cutest little town in NJ, I don't know what is! Parking is easy, and on a Sunday night around 8PM, the wait is not long. We sat at a communal table, which is totally fine by me. I went with my boyfriend and we decided to share a few things (our new favorite way to dine). I started off with the beet and goat cheese salad, umm..YUM! Super good, the beets were pickled nicely and the cheese was perfect, some arugula was spread throughout which added a nice "green" flavor (how else do you describe arugula?!) Then we had the small traditional crust Tartufi pizza. The truffle oil MADE this dish, so delicious, the sausage was crumbled on top, nothing special there. Then we shared a pasta dish: The Telefono, the mozzarella was so fresh and the dish in general tasted refreshing. They went light on the sauce and heavy on the cheese- what could be better?.. Overall I can't wait to get myself back into Arturo's. The food is A+.
(4)Mike M.
Very fresh ingredients. Very good brick oven pizza. Great salads. Above average dishes.
(4)Robert P.
Not great. 3 things make a great pie. Good crust, sauce and cheese. Crust was burned, not fresh mozzarella, and WHERE is the sauce? Doesn't compare to Grimaldi's, Brooklyn Coal Fired, or La Rustique. Was very disappointed. Don't believe the hype with this place. Doesn't compare with Star Tavern or even Nellies. Pizza lovers know what I mean.
(2)Kelly J.
Best BYOB in Maplewood! Delicious pizza and great atmosphere. Always on a wait, which you could look at as a negative, but I see it as a positive. People want to eat and hang out here for good reason. Try the crostini, they are amazing!
(5)Ivan V.
The personal pan pizzas are amazing here. I ordered the Margherita pizza and it totally blew me away. My girl ordered the wild mushroom Ravioli with the rosemary garlic sauce in truffle oil. Simply a great meal.
(5)Monique E.
I just left Arturo's after having eaten here for the first time. The ambience and decor were very comfortable and cute. It is not a cheesy pizza joint. There were 14 of us waiting outside for over 20 minutes for it to be opening time at 5pm. The pizza was amazing. I love pizza and would eat it every single day if I could so I do not say this lightly. I am very pizza particular. We ordered a large tartuffi pie with mozzarella, mushrooms, sausage and truffle oil...we added prosciutto. It was so good that I wanted to keep eating even after I was full. I will be coming back to try all of their pies and the other dishes I observed coming out looked delicious as well. The only reason Arturo's doesn't get a 5 is b/c this is my 1st visit and I want to give a more experienced rating in the future.

Great pizza, must try if you in north jersey. Service is also great. Plenty of parking as well.wood burn pizza taste so good.
(5)Rio L.
If I was on death row, my last meal would be the tartufi pizza. There's just enough hint of truffle, and the sausage is fantastic. Literally the best pizza I've ever had. The santo is also up there. There're always 2 options of seasonal roasted or sautéed vegetables, and my gf and I make sure to always order both. Maplewood village is a charming area, so sitting outdoors on the sidewalk is always a treat. The inside has sort of a rustic/industrial vibe which I love. Also, byob which is fantastic. Love this place.
(5)Alex M.
Arturo's has become, far and away, my favorite restaurant in Maplewood. It's almost always packed-- it's a tiny space, but never feels overly crowded. The pizza is extremely good. I always like to order the farm pie (they get fresh produce and make really interesting specials that change all the time) and their root vegetables are delicious. I love traditional Jersey pizza- the kind that you can get for a dollar a slice and fold up on a paper plate- but Arturo's is more artisanal (annoying word, but it's valid here) and interesting without ever being pretentious. Highly highly recommended.
(5)Kyle M.
I love pizza, as such, I try to seek out the places that are really famous for having incredible pizza. Arturo's doesn't really make those lists as it's not known like a lombardi's, but it is literally the best pizza I've ever tasted. It's thin crust gourmet pizza that is really made with ultra fine ingredients. My girlfriend and I tried this pie without really planning to be wowed, and were frankly amazed by the quality. I really can't say enough good things about it. The restaurant is small and somewhat cozy, this does mean you will have to wait to be seated (the wait is well worth the food). The staff is nice and friendly and the food comes out fast and delicious. This is fairly short review but that's just because there is literally nothing wrong with this place.
(5)Igal G.
I LOVE THIS PLACE! The food is always amazing and fresh, the staff is beyond courteous, and atmosphere is always lively and fun. YOU NEED TO TRY THEIR PIZZA..... trust me, it's the best I've found.
(5)Emilio M.
I eat pizza as a hobby. Have tried all kinds from New Jersey and New York and Arturos is my favorite. I'm addicted!!!
(5)Julian S.
I started eating salad regularly after eating salad here. Whatever they put in their dressing must be some derivative of the sacred tears of baby Jesus. There are few places that make pizza like these guys do, so if you're a pizza fan you should come check it out at least once. The place is small though, so expect a wait. I came at opening time but had to wait 20 minutes because a ton of people had come earlier. It's worth the wait, though. 5/5 would dine again.
(5)Crystine W.
Arturo's was a bit of a disappointment for me. Servers all look like they are under 21 and they don't necessarily work the seating/reservation system very well. Restaurant is small and cozy and it isn't too difficult to find a parking space. Dish Gradings: Truffled Mushroom Raviolis - A++ Mai Pie - B Tartuffo - B Ceci (Small Plate) - A They specialize in thin-crust pizzas so if you're a thick-crust fan like me, you may not find it to be as enjoyable either.
(3)Amanda J.
My boyfriend was told by several of his co-workers to go to Arturo's. We were really skeptical this place would live up to the hype. So when we finally made the trip out there, we were almost deterred by the long wait. But trust me, Arturo's is worth the wait!! We split a Margharita pizza and the special Farmhouse salad. Absolutely delicious, we were both in heaven. The salad was so fresh and delicious, made with locally sourced vegetables too. I loved the pizza dough, and it was cooked just right. I'm usually not one to rave about Italian food or pizza. But I'm giving Arturo's 5 stars - which should say something! They seem to be always busy, so prepare yourself. This place is BYOB too which is awesome. There are a couple liquor stores in the area where someone in your party can grab the hooch while you wait.
(5)Tom R.
Kudos to Arturo's for mastering Neapolitan pizza, but with all American ingredients. The place is rather small and unpretentious, but the wood-burning oven in the corner makes a wonderful Margherita pie with a nicely charred crust, tasty (California) tomatoes, and creamy mozzarella. A blackboard on the wall indicates that even the flour is milled in Clifton, NJ!Prices are not out of line, given the quality and the location; I paid about $20 for salad, pizza, and homemade iced tea at lunch recently. New Jersey has seen many new pizzerias featuring authentic Italian pies in the last few years; Arturo's is one of the best.
(5)Claire L.
I have died and gone to pizza heaven. This place makes the best pizza ever, ever, ever. Everything they make here is good from the salads, to the pastas and of course, the PIZZA. Everything is farm fresh and delicious. I am always craving the pizza here and am always sad that there isn't a pizza place like Arturo's in central NJ. It stinks for me that i have to drive so far to get amazing pizza but totally worth it. The only downside to this place is that they don't take reservations so usually when I end up going there, I usually have to wait on a pretty long line before getting seated. But then again, long lines usually means great food.
(5)Sylvia L.
Food is probably closer to 3.5 but I round down. We shared the tartufi, montagna, ceci, wild mushroom ravioli, penne with sausage ragu and the crostini. My favorite was the crostini, the cheese was not overwhelming and there was just the right amount of sea salt. Delicious! The montagna also was decent. I was not a fan of the pastas - thought there was very little meat in the penne dish. Ceci was ok. Service was great. The people at the front really try hard to get you a table as fast as they can. Be sure everyone is there to be seated. It gets really packed even by 6.30pm on a Thursday.
(3)Thomas L.
Good place, easy to find, friendly servers. Has good parking lot behind. Place is very busy, must be due to good food. They have short list of items in menu. We had bean soup, personal pizza and ravioli. All were good. Personal pizza is nice size for 2 people, comes with 6 slices. I would go back there for take out, but might not for dining in. Place is kind of too crowed and limited space.
(4)Green C.
Great pies with great ingredients, love the dough Go early or in smaller groups to be seated faster, usually crowded Sometimes you will get burnt pizza but really good hot pizza, not the type of pizza you can reheat the next day. Best when fresh. Byob Another place with Arturo's style pizza is A Mano in ridgewood nj
(4)Richard S.
This is the best pizza I have ever had in my life. I am not sure how I express how strongly I feel about that. You eat pizza your whole life and you try to find the best Jersey and NY has to offer and then one day you find Arturo's and you feel like you never had real pizza before. From the perfect crust to the perfect sauce, no detail is spared or overlooked. Even the non pizza offerings are exceptional. In short, best pizza ever.
(5)Susan H.
I had the margherita pizza and a caesar salad. The food came out quick, and everything was delicious. Remember to BYOB if you'd like wine or beer, I saw more than more person running to to the liquor store across the street before their dinner. Enjoy!
(4)Eimegeorge R.
Lunch with my daughter. Very good wood fire pizza. Had a large 1/2 santo (sausage n onion) and 1/2 mantagna (arugula n speck). Could be a little more well done on top The crust was fine though a little on the doughy side. Also had a side of polpete (meatballs) which was good.
(3)Val W.
Note, we only had take out, so can only comment on that! Some of the best pizza I've had in the New York New Jersey area. Especially have the Margharita! The fresh cheese is soooo worth it! They recommended the mushroom, sausage, truffle oil one as well, and it was good, though not as good. The prices seemed expensive at first, but a large pizza is easily enough for two people, and the place is local and eco friendly, so the price is worth it. From the little interaction I had with the workers, they were so friendly, and the place looked nice from just briefly walking in. In conclusion, SUCH. GOOD. PIZZA.
(5)Stephen T.
I traveled all over for the best brick oven pizza. This is one is the best if not the best. Try it. Roberta's I'm bushbuck Brooklyn. This maybe a little better
(5)Kenny L.
My fianceé and I came here the night before Sandy's arrival. We figured that we should eat out one last time before we batten down the hatches and shut ourselves in for the hurricane. It's been over two weeks and I still remember how good the food was. Everything was good. Pizza crust had a touch of smokiness from wood fired oven. I've had plenty of good pizza since I moved here but this was truly a cut above. What I remember the most, and what I still obsess over, is the salumi plate. The prosciutto was some of the best prosciutto I have ever had. What makes this the best was the amount of fat marbled in. It was like a good piece of prosciutto melded with a good piece of lardo. That stuff melted in my mouth like butter. The best I have ever had. Can't wait till I return and try more items from their menu.
(5)Peter B.
Excellent food at a reasonable price. The small town atmosphere of the restaurant is comfortable and the selection of dishes is wonderfully eclectic.
(5)Chapin P.
Pizza was just okay. Prices aren't terrible but there were an alarming number of servers, cashiers, managers, and line cooks. I know they get crowded but there must of been 15 people working there at this tiny restaurant. Manager was annoyingly strict on our waitress and distracting our meal. Basically was just annoying to have all these workers running around getting yelled at in this tiny place were the food was just okay. Hipsters will love this place.
(2)Ateeb K.
Had to wait 1 hr :18 minutes just to get table then were told to wait another 45 minutes to get the food. We left without ordering. This was on a Friday night. It is recommended to just call and order takeout instead of eating in.
(1)Chris W.
One of my favorite restaurants in NJ. The only drawback is that it is so popular that you'll likely have to wait. I went on a Sunday at 5pm and people were waiting in line. Luckily I just made it in for the first seating. If you are a party of 2, you have a better shot at a short or no wait. Onto the important thing, the food. Love the pizza. You won't get better anywhere in the state. My wife and I usually get a large pizza and pasta to share. Then take home the leftovers. Yesterday we got the pasta with wild boar ragu and it was fantastic. The portion size was huge and it was delicious.
(5)Isabel C.
HOLY GOD OF PIZZA! the margherita pizza was so delicious, and super soft, i mean that dough was to die for. I came here and ordered for takeout, i have never ate inside but i would love to in the future it seems very homey and it has great service, i did notice people waiting outside for tables and im glad i took my pizza home to enjoy
(5)Pimp D.
Been to their Jersey City location many times and happened to be in the neighborhood. Popped in in a Tues night. Had the farmhouse pizza and wild boar pasta - both excellent. Plus the pizza is much cheaper (and larger) than the JC location and it's BYOB. The only downside is the place is tiny compared to the JC location. There was about a 15 minute wait to get a seat.
(4)Gianluca C.
This is by far the best pizza I ever had and I been to many places. This is as close as it gets or even better then places in Italy, including the Naples region. The pasta dishes are also very good. The only problem with this place that it is very hard to get a table. If you want to have dinner at 7 then get there at 4. This place is no joke..
(5)Andrew B.
Wow. We don't generally eat "pretty" pizza, but at Arturo's the pizza is hot to look at and to slide into one's mouth. Simply awesome, everything they do, down to the ricotta crostini. Yum. Yum. Yum.
(5)Mark B.
Somewhat small with about a dozen tables and one communal dining table, Arturo's is consistent about a lot of things. Consistently busy, consistently delicious food, consistently great service. With a homey interior that reminds me of a college town restaurant, Arturo's has a casual vibe. The menu offers an array of wood fired pizzas and these have always been good. The crust is thin with nice bubbles of char from the hot oven. They use fine quality ingredients with produce locally sourced where possible. Aside from their regular offerings like Margherita, Tartufi, or Montagna (prosciutto and arugula); they often offer a Farm pizza that changes with seasonally available ingredients. Aside from pizza, they offer about a half dozen pastas mostly with hearty sauces. We often start with a great Ceci salad, meatballs, or crostini. I know they make salads, but I've never had one. One standout is their service. I've always had friendly, knowledgeable servers. They serve water in chilled wine bottles that is quickly replaced whenever they are emptied. Lots of restaurants could learn from Arturo's about how to take care of a patron. About the only thing that keeps me from coming here again and again are the long lines and waits to get in. Yes, takeout is an option, but the pizza really is a lot better when eaten fresh out of the oven.
(5)Joanna C.
Best pizza in town. Unfortunately, seating is limited. Prices are above average but worth it. Get a pizza & salad to go! Not good for any group over 4.
(5)Marty H.
Simply the best pizza I've ever had! And great farm to table salads! We go to Arturo's quite often and never get tired of it. The staff is super polite & friendly ... always! It's a BYOB place. On Fri & Sat nights it gets pretty crowded (cause it's so good) and there may be a long wait.
(5)Joe B.
Excellent and consistent pizza and pasta. Friendly staff and always the freshest ingredients. Love this place.
(4)Annie H.
Here's the thing: Arturo's food is STELLAR. Their pizza is incredible, pasta is delectable, salads are refreshing and even sides are perfectly cooked and seasoned. Service is always perfectly fine. The decor matches their of-the-times farm fresh vibe. Let's just say you could definitely believe you were in a hip neighborhood in Brooklyn. They are BYOB, like many places in Maplewood. I actually love this trend and can't wait to choose my own wine to bring when I'm no longer pregnant. The only downside to Arturo's? The wait. Even on a weeknight, the wait is often between 1 and 2 hours. And take-out doesn't shorten the wait time - plus, wood-fired pizza just isn't quite the same after a drive in a cardboard box. I wish they would somehow expand their space or even open up an Arturo's Due to accommodate all of their faithful patrons and alleviate the hours spent waiting outside for a bite of their delicious food!
(4)Melinda K.
I loved the individual pizza we all had. It gave us ab opportunity to try three different favors. The Margherita pizza was amazing not too much sauce and a good amount of cheese which is not usually the case. The regular style pizza had different flavor cheeses on top and great sauce. For knock out pizza I give this place a five and I would definitely come back.
(5)Nadia R.
Hands down the best restaurant in the whole South Orange/Maplewood area. Fresh food made with love, of course incredible pizza but seriously even the salads are divine. The service is great and I can't wait to eat my way through their entire menu!
(5)Marjorie T.
Arturo's is one of the best pizza places in the world. Amazing pizza amazing salad amazing pasta amazing soup amazing drinks amazing everything.
(5)Soo K.
Goat cheese salad, very good. Margherita pizza was delish! Thin crust, tasty, good flavors! Definitely a 4!
(4)VK I.
We enjoyed a lovely April afternoon at an outside table. We stumbled into Arturo's as it was just next to the spot we parked and what a find! My husband and I shared a Sognatori salad which had some yummy cheese and then split a Margherita pizza. Best pizza I have had in many years. Definite keeper.
(5)Matthew D.
Very very very good pizza . I would give 4.5 because of the lack of sauce on the pie but the crust and cheese that they use makes it worth it . I have to give 5 stars because its jersey and its hard to find a good pizza spot .
(5)Sleep R.
Great pizza and creative salads. We attempt to try as many different pizza places in NJ as we can and this is one of the better spots. My only and kind of major complaint is the insane wait and poor organization of trying to reserve a table. Every time we go we are told it's "an hour" wait and if you don't stand there and constantly make yourself visible to the hostess you can and will lose your spot. Kind of lame.
(4)Lauren p.
Went here last night for the first time and was delighted. My husband and I ordered the Parma and mushroom pizza and an arugula salad. Everything was great. Definitely get a large pizza so there are leftovers to take home!
(5)Sharttle H.
We tried this place because of the high reviews on Yelp and loved it. We will definitely return. Pros: Amazing Margharita pizza!!!! Decent prices Cons: They dont offer dessert. Place is small.
(5)Kelly S.
This place is wonderful! Farm to Table freshness, great service, and a casual but fun atmosphere. You'll have to wait for a table, but they'll bring you out a wine glass and you can enjoy some of your bottle (it's BYO) as you do. I highly suggest their white pizza (all the pizzas have a chewy, flavorful crust) and my husband always orders the wild mushroom ravioli with rosemary sauce and truffle oil. Seems quite Family friendly, though larger groups may have a longer wait. Ordered a pizza and salad to go once- the pick up time was 50 minutes, so don't wait too long to place your order!
(5)SK K.
This place is amazing and we haven't had a better pizza in the tri state area. Kudos to the owner who maintains the tradition and keeps the Italian spirit alive.
(5)Steven H.
I think I was at a nearby outdoor table the same night as Andrew D. below (whose review is an example of how reviews should be written, incidentally). I dined at a small round table with my two teenaged kids literally on the street corner outside the place, and it could not have been more fun! Jessica, the hostess who seated us, could not have been nicer or more accommodating - what a nice woman. That went for the rest of the staff, all of whom checked in with us at various stages of our meal to make sure we were happy in a friendly, low-key way that made us feel well cared for. We looked at our menus, went inside to order at the counter, and had our delicious salads delivered to our table within minutes. We then devoured two delicious wood-fired pizzas, a four-cheese and the real standout, the Tartufi, which has sausage, cheese, mushrooms and truffle oil. Mmmm good. As Andrew stated below, the pizzas are outstanding and this place is such a good value, especially considering it is a BYO (when no teen kids are in tow, that is!). Can't wait to try their evening tasting menu soon. Arturo's is a winning formula, and I cannot believe it took me all these years of living in the area to discover it. Shame on me (or my friends for keeping it to themselves).
(4)Trip C.
We were visiting a friend in Maplewood, NJ for the day. Stepping off the train, breakfast suddenly seemed like it was long, long ago and we realized we were famished. Our friend, having a long hike in mind, took pity on us and fed us first. Yay! We were seated quickly and our server immediately let us know about the various specials available. Looking around, it seemed the place was busy considering it was the middle of the afternoon (not peak lunch time) and a Monday. That usually means great food, and we weren't disappointed. I ordered the pasta dish with a wild boar ragu and mushrooms and was so delighted with the flavor that I had to force myself not to eat the entire thing. Our service was impeccable and I'd highly recommend Arturo's if you ever find yourself in Maplewood.
(4)David B.
As a 5 star says - WooHoo - As good as it gets and that is no lie - this is the best pizza, ever. Everything is fresh and tasty - I mean everything. If you don't think this is the best pizza, or at least your top 3, then something is seriously wrong with you, and you should be banned from pizza for life. It's so good, I am debating selling my house to move closer then the 20 minute drive takes me today - yeah, THAT GOOD.
(5)Rae B.
Best pizza in my life. Their support of local farmers is laudable. Their food consistently above par. They set the bar high. They should expand their small place and offer a real restaurant. In sure they'd thrive.
(5)Bianca W.
Great farm-to-table pizzeria. The pizzas were delish! as were the meatballs and salad. There are some small outdoor tables which will be great as it gets warmer. The wait can be frustrating if you time it badly...they should really think about expanding (hint hint!). We often get take-away to avoid the queue. Nice corner position so that you can people watch.
(4)Bonnie B.
I love this place! Amazing pizza and sides. I only hesitate to recommend because the wait can be brutal, but worth it.
(5)Tom C.
Great Pizza and good simple fare out of a wood burning oven. They promote a "farm to table" concept but their menu has not changed in years, but the food is really good. Service, now that is another story - they are not customer friendly and in their world the customer is NOT always right. My family and I came in this past week. There were only 3 other tables as it was almost closing time. We were a party of 6 but there were no tables large enough for us. No problem, right? We can push tables together...wrong. Their host would not let us do this, and the server would notlet us, and the manager would not - explaining it would be a "fire hazard"! Like no other restaurant has ever pushed tables together to accomadate larger parties. To add insult to injury, they also would not let us pull 2 more chairs over to our table so we could sit together. End result, our 8 and 10 year olds had to sit alone while the rest of us ate together. Thanks Arturo, we will not be back even though we like your food.
(2)Sheesh S.
Excellent food and top quality ingredients. They were recommended to me very strongly and each time I go I sit at the communal tables with regulars who rave about the food. Never had a bad experience. Food is always top quality. They're doing it right.
(5)Peter S.
It really detracts from the diner's experience that they don't take reservations. Even worse, when you call to find out how long the seating delay is, they won't tell you, which is really inconsiderate. The food is good -- not great -- but it's rarely worth the hassle of waiting around for a table.
(2)Gracie B.
Love this place. The food is amazing. The service is great. There's really not much else to say. Order anything and it's delicious. Well - I've never had the pasta, but the salads, pizza, the daily greens - always wonderful. PS - BYOB. And there's a great wine store just up the road. Put your name on the list, go pick up some vino, and your seat will be ready a little after you get back.
(5)Claire C.
This was our first visit to Arturo's, and we were very satisfied. We had heard from friends that the restaurant is small, and the wait time on the weekends can be long, so we got there early (around 5:15) - and, we still had a 30 minute wait for a table for two. The place was packed, but the service was very good. We had a cavatelli pasta dish and a margherita pizza, and both were good. The pizza crust was excellent - crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. The prices were also quite reasonable. Arturo's is located in downtown Maplewood, and there are plenty of things to do while waiting for your table - there is a quaint bookstore (Words) located right across the street that is worth checking out.
(4)JP S.
Long waits, small restaurant but uh....the best pizza in the area. Worth the wait.
(5)Isack L.
Oh man, this place is so goooooood. Get their mushroom ravioli if you haven't tried them because that dish is amazing. Anyways, if you're gonna come here on a weekend, be ready to spend 1-2 hours waiting outside or at a store nearby. It gets pack really quickly, but i think it's worth the wait. I sometimes call to see if i can order a pick-up order and they say it's about 1.5 hrs. (WTH man) Their pizzas are out of this world, especially their pepperoni and sausage with onions (I forgot the name). Also, you can order half half so try a variety and see what you like the most, you won't be disappointed.
(5)Michael P.
Unfortunately they don't take reservations, therefore be prepared to wait a little while - but without a doubt waiting is worth it. Arturo's has an incredibly good pizza, also the bread with olive oil is very tasty. The menu itself is rather short, and doesn't have desserts. For us this wasn't any issue, as everything we had was so delicious that we couldn't ask for anything more. The service is just great, the waiters are very attentive. We were a party of 4 and were seated at a big table with 3 other people. However there was still enough space to not feel squeezed together. We definitely recommend this place.

(5)Julianna K.
I recently went there for the second time because my boyfriend and I loved it the first time! For appetizer, we had the crustini with fresh ricotta and olive oil on top which was fantastic! For entree I ordered half "Bianco" pie and half margarita with meatballs which was also a fantastic meal. The pizza had fresh ingredients and they are not cheap on the toppings. Our waiter was extremely friendly and the food came out pretty quick! Overall, I would give it five starts, but they do not offer deserts (which I was excited for based on how delicious their food was) and expect a 30-45 minute wait because there is very limited seating. Definitely recommend!!
(4)Dave F.
In a sea of bad pizza throughout new jersey I have been in search of a thin rustic crisp pizza with taste and unique character. Too much to ask for? I'm beginning to wonder. This place had all the markings of a great pizza, but it fell flat and i ended up being disappointed. The crust was uneven and in some spots raw. Unacceptable considering you could drop 50 bucks here in a blink of a eye.
(2)Pamela W.
The food at Arturos is good, but the service and accommodations for people with food allergies is terrible. There are no options for gluten free diners nor will they accommodate food allergies at all. Therefore, since we had a group going I asked if I could just bring a little something for my son to eat while the rest of us feasted, and the answer was an emphatic no.
(3)David L.
Margherita pizza with prosciutto, best pizza, like nothing I have ever had. Will definitely go back with my own wine in the summer.
(5)Ben D.
The classic combo of pizza and a salad are executed at the highest level at this spot. Start with the kale Caesar salad here and follow it up with any one of their wood oven burned pies. The "Santo" is topped with tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, sausage, onion and roasted chili oil. An absolute flavor explosion!
(4)Geoffrey C.
Tried out their margherita pizza with sausage. Not perfect but definitely a decent pizza.
(4)Bo B.
My husband and I started off with the mixed baby green salad with prosciutto di Parma and shaved Parmesan. The greens were tender and sweet, lightly dressed with an abundant amount of prosciutto. The prosciutto was perfect. Sliced oh so thin that it practically melted in your mouth. We shared the Santo pie. It was heavenly. Light airy, fermented dough crust that had a nice tang to it. It had crumbled sausage, red onion and chili oil and their own freshly made mozzarella. Delicious combination. Too bad this place wasn't closer ti home, otherwise we would be eating here at least once a week.
(5)Jay G.
Call me crazy but i am not impressed. Yes the food is good but not worth waiting for and sitting outside on tiny chairs and tiny tables. They need to find a bigger space if they want a real challenge. So many reviews for a place that is so ordinary blows my mind.
(3)Nathaly V.
Wood Fire Pizza! Who can beat that?! No one! The pizza is great here every time! Thin crust has the right amount of crispiness and great texture in every bite and red sauce base is light and fresh. Of course, the pizza is cooked in mere minutes and brought to your table immediately. Very Hot ! Perfection! I recommend the tartufo and margherita but definitely don't be afraid to try any of their specials. This place is simply amazing. Don't miss out! and stick to Wood Fire Pizza ONLY! Happy Eats!
(5)The Food D.
Food was excellent! Service was awesome, and that's even dealing with two small children that we had with us. Pizza was awesome!
(5)Jason B.
Bombass pizza. Get a large and share between two. Sides vary depending on availability, but veggies always taste so fresh, you want to smack em in the face. In the face! BYO, so the bill is always cheap. 40 bucks after tip gets you and your date the best pizza in the northeast, if not the entire U.S. And staff are pleasant. Bonus.
(5)R M.
Hands down, this is the best pizza in the area. By far. Try the Montagna and Santo pies. Lines can be long and intimidating, so takeaway (with advance ordering to avoid rush) is a great loophole. Would pass on most pastas as they tend to be too busy and nowhere near as good as the pizza. Salads are worth trying.
(5)Mercy O.
I had the best wild mushroom ravioli I've ever had at this place! The only reason it gets 4 stars and not 5 is because I paid $14 for only about 8 pieces of ravioli. I barely felt satisfied after finishing my meal. Other than that their pizzas are great too.
(4)elizabeth s.
Great pizza and salads. We had the market plate and a pizza - flavors were fresh and delicious. Fast and friendly service.
(5)PK C.
The food is just ok. I don't know why people rave about the place. My meatballs were burnt and just barely better that something I could cook at home. The entree was an average pasta dish. Nothing to brag about. I'll probably return but it isn't one of my favorite
(2)Tracy A.
Grabbed a quick bite with a friend before catching the train to NYC. We shared a pizza and some salad. Good. Nothing to write home about but a good solid choice if you find yourself in downtown Maplewood for some reason.
(3)Tara P.
The best pizza in the entire world. I always get sautéed greens. My fave are the mustard greens sprinkled with Parmesan. The beet salad. Prefer the winter version with lettuce under it. And the santo pizza. The santo has chili oil, sausage and onions. It's so good. The side salad is really fresh. The Cesar salad is the only disappointment, but I forgive them. Cesar salad really isn't Italian. Also, I had once a mediocre soup. It was more like a tomato based gruel. But, again, I forgive you Arturo's cause your pizza is soo good. It's byob. And, super cheap for the quality. I've had a few of their pastas. My fave is sort of a light and creamy sausage based tagliatelle. A-mazing!
(5)Ciara V.
Arturos is my fave in the area--I normally order pizza to go (it is always crowded so if dining in, expect a wait), but if you're going to order the Margherita pizza (which is their most popular), eat it in the restaurant. You must devour it when it's most fresh!
(4)Amanda B.
Best pizza I have ever had. My boyfriend and I drive an hour to eat here about once a month, it is so good. The wood fired oven gives the thin crust an excellent dark char flavor, and the cheese and sauce are fresh & flavorful.

Hands down the best pizza around. This place is all about freshness and it shows. We are regulars at Arturo's and have never had a bad meal. They always have great appetizers made using local farm produce including; fire roasted asparagus, carrots and snap peas. Just had their latest heirloom tomato appetizer which was awesome. Try their meatballs as a side dish and thank me later! BYOB; another plus!!!

If a great pizza's foundation is the pizza dough, then Arturo's disappoints. Unfortunately, the great ingredients could not save the moderately chewy and plain dough. What makes Punch Pizza in MN or Pizzeria Mozza great is the flaky, almost paper, charred thin crust that is created by a great fire. Even with the charred crust, the dough was just too chewy for this establishment to be considered a great pizza restaurant.

I'll keep this short and sweet. The pizza is really good, not the best I've had in New Jersey (Mancini's in Montclair holds that title) but you will not be disappointed if you go. We had the sausage, mushroom and truffle oil pie which was great. It's a small place that doesn't take reservations, so order to pick-up, go for lunch or bring a good magazine to read while you wait.

Absolutely amazing each time!!!! The Tartuffi pie is my favorite! Byob a plus.. Love it here! Worth the long waits! The farmers pie is also amazing when they have it as a special! Can't go wrong with anything here!!!

I went there for the first time a few weeks ago. It was delicious. Everything. From the salad to the pizza. It's a small place but worth the wait. And you can also bring your own wine and beer. Great place to catch up with friends or just go out for a family dinner. Waitresses and hostess are very nice and helpful. Definitely recommended to anyone looking for a great pizza dinner.

Great neighborhood bistro/pizza place. The food is fresh and flavorful. Unique dishes that truly hit the spot when you are hungry! Staff is very friendly & accommodating. The seating tends to be limited during dinner hour but if you are willing to sit "family style" with other patrons at one of the larger tables, then they try and seat you ASAP.

've been to Italy and lived part of my life in Manhattan. Hands-down the best pizza within a 10-20 mile radius. The huge wood burning oven is not there by chance. ;) They have plenty of other dishes that are just spot on as well. Go right when it opens to guarantee a seat. If you have a hankering for some Italian, this is the spot.

Outstanding small town local pizzeria serving up exceptional pies based on a concentrated menu of unique choices. In town for one night in search of a great pizza and having flown in from the West Coast was specifically looking for authenticity. Ingredients are locally grown and you taste the flavors and appreciate the passion behind the quality. Ordered the small Tartufi with mushrooms/sausage but highly recommend ordering the meatball appetizer, it was AMAZING!! Remarkable meal experience and prices match the superiority of the dishes. Waiting for a table may be an issue but the hostess is gracious and attentive to accommodate. Overall, service, food and ambiance was extraordinary, I'm a big FAN.
