Located in Jersey City's West Side, Laico's is a family style Italian restaurant that will have you scratching your head and asking, "how in the world did you find this place?" Well, I'm not really sure but I am glad I did. It is located on a long street in a neighborhood with two story homes that are about three feet apart from each other. There is valet parking available and it is more of a necessity than an amenity. This place is reliable, comfortable and down to earth. This isn't a first date kind of place. It doesn't impress with the decor or clientele. But what laicos lacks in social graces more than makes up with the food. You'll think your having dinner at your buddy Guido's house and his "Nonna" serves your pasta to you by holding the plate with the end of her apron. Classic. Tonight I had the scungilli fra diavolo and it was delicious. This is a difficult dish to cook too. It can easily turn into rubber band soup but laicos pulled it off rather well. I might also mention that they were child friendly despite the fact there is a bar in the middle of the restaurant with unhappy Yankee fans drinking steadily. Laico's might be a whole in the wall but it is my whole and now I am paying it forward.....(or backward, depending on how you look at it.)

For years my friends have been telling me about the best Italian restaurant in Jersey City. I was not convinced on just hearsay alone, after all there are dozens upon dozens of quality Italian restaurants in or around Jersey City. What makes Laico's the best? Well let me tell you. As my friends brought me to Laico's for the very first time I knew immediately this was going to like this place. I could see why they called it "Jersey City's best kept secret." For one it is hidden in the middle of Terhune Ave. a small residential block that is sandwiched between McAdoo and Cator Ave. and is hard to find if you're not familiar with the area. Any place with that kind of reputation and is this hard to find must be good. Secondly, it is the Laico family home that has been converted into a restaurant. The two things that make it stand out from the surrounding houses on the street are a small green awning with the restaurant's name in white letters and the very small valet parking lot, which is more like an alleyway. (Approx. 6 spaces) All other parking must be found on the street. Upon entering the restaurant we were greeted by a lovely elderly women named Grace. She showed us to our table and informed us that she would be serving us, and that all menu items are slightly larger portions served family style. She promptly got our drink order as we looked over the menu. As you can imagine the whole place had a pleasant and very homey feel. Not to mention that it was pretty busy for a Wednesday night. We were seated in the back dining area, which we enjoyed because it was a little more spacious, then the front. Grace returned with our cocktails and we were ready to order. We were a fairly large and hungry group we decide to order a few different appetizers for the table to share. So we ordered two of there brick oven pizzas: the Quattro Formaggio (4 Cheese) and the Broccoli Rabe and Sausage pizza (both $8.95), along with the Spicy Calamari ($12.95) appetizer. Both of the pizzas were extremely thin crust and had that smoky slightly charred flavor of a brick oven. The Quattro Formaggio was oozing salty sweet cheese and the Broccoli Rabe and Sausage was equally as good. The sausage was sweet and the broccoli rabe was not as bitter as expected and it also had a spicy kick from red pepper flakes. The Spicy Calamari was a very large portion, (enough to feed 3 or 4 people) fried perfectly golden brown and topped with a spicy marinara sauce. This is a dish I would order again and again. All entrees are served with fresh salad topped with a homemade Italian dressing, and served with warm homemade garlic bread, and come with your choice of pasta or vegetable as a side. The Chicken Shoemaker ($15.95) was chicken on the bone with a red wine and balsamic reduction sauce. The chicken was moist and juicy and the sauce was thick and richly sweet. The Pork Chops with Vinegar Peppers and Mushrooms ($17.95) was out of this world. The double thick chops were extremely moist. Accompanied by sautéed mushrooms, yellow and red bell peppers. The acidity from the peppers along with the natural sweetness of the pork worked extremely well together. The Cavatelli and Broccoli was pretty good. Sautéed in a light coating of garlic and oil. Defiantly not the chefs best dish but good non-the less. The Veal Francese ($19.95) was very tender and had a wonderful buttery lemon sauce. You can't go wrong with this dish. They also offer a Chicken and Shrimp Parmigiana ($18.95) that has the perfect amount of shrimp to chicken ratio and had a sweet marinara sauce and melted mozzarella cheese. The service was excellent. The food was great. For me the only let down was the side dishes. The pasta that accompanied my entrée was watery and bland and one of my friends mentioned that his vegetables were mushy and were most likely canned not fresh. But that is not enough to keep me away. This is by far my new favorite restaurant. I will be back.

I have to agree with the former reviewer that this place is a hidden secret that is quite mind blowing, in fact, one of the best around JC...seriously! Laico's is known as a trademark and a part of Jersey City's history of fine home made italian food. AN ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE/TRY..

I LOVE this place. The food is great, the prices are better and the atmosphere is old school, which is a nice touch. The veal is delicious and the house wine is a nice complement. I would highly recommend paying this fine establishment a visit - either for your date night or a group outing. Some may be annoyed, but I find it charming that most of the staff has been working their for more than 20 years...

Yumyumyum. Delicious Italian food. Serivce has not always been up to par, but it's because they are always so busy. I always get chicken parm and mozzarella en cerozza. You should do the same.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
