Well my sister is a fan of this place and insisted on their outdoor seating so we went for lunch. I had high hopes after scanning the menu and finding some favorites. We did calamari as an app; lightly battered and fried, the marinara was thick and tasty- overall pretty good. We each got salads as a main course. My chicken Caesar was alright although I've never had a Caesar salad with mesclun greens... I asked for extra dressing on the side and never received it. My sister's Thai peanut salad was in a large square shaped bowl that appeared dirty on the edges. It was missing ingredients that were listed on the menu and there was no dressing at all (not tossed in dressing & none on the side). I'll admit my salad was tasty, but the food I don't think is worth the money. The service was ok besides the forgotten Caesar dressing. I don't see myself returning there anytime soon though

It is hit or miss at Hohokus Inn- don't know why. I believe the quality is mediocre as evidenced by latest last lunch - I ordered the Thai Salad and it arrived and served as though it had been made up several hours prior. Ingredients could use an upgrade in order to make this a potentially fresher and crisper salad. Have to keep it simple here; burgers tend to be consistent and good. On occasion have run into lack of quality and presentation of dishes at this establishment.

We visited the restaurant the holiday lunch about two weeks ago. The food was just okay - my Asian Thai salad was described by the waiter as the best thing in the world - and it was quite mediocre and very pedestrian. Appetizers were small and expensive. From our group of 10 people, nobody raved about the food. Wine list is okay - you can find some reasonable values in terms of taste/price ratio. Service was decent. No recommendation on this one - go if you have to.

Place was a little off from our normal visits. Service was slow and food was different. Usually steak cooked exactly to order this time was overdone and portions seemed smaller. Don't know if any changes in staff or cooks recently.

Had a great night here tonight. Haven't been here in a number of years and was happy to give it another shot. We sat at the bar in The Tavern part of the restaurant. The bartender, Kat, was friendly and attentive...and made a great martini! For dinner I had the pork sandwich with a side of brussel sprouts, which were really tasty. I've heard the bar is super busy Friday/Saturday, but tonight wasn't bad at all. Great service and great food.

I think we keep going back there because of the ambience. We love the "library," but I always leave there somewhat disappointed. I've had more bad meals there than good. I ordered pasta once, and had to send it back because the pasta had the texture of spaghetti O's (I am serious). Had the tuna tartare there recently, it was very disappointing, a little fishy, and on a bed of creamy mayonaissy avocado.... eww. I was happy that it was a small serving. Btw, that's another thing, the portions are extremely small. Once, I was not very hungry and thought I would order the small plate, and it was literally just a mouthful..... but, we're suckers who keep going back...

Big disappointment and poor value. We hosted an event here for a bridal shower booked nine months ago and the service and attitude left much to be desired. One server for fifty guests. Food served two hours after the party started and the entrees ( to our surprise) were served on small appetizer size plates. Teeny tiny portions of mediocre food for a big price tag. Were told could not have more bread./pastry because only a set amount of bread was in our contract - they could have at least asked if we were willing to pay for a few more biscuits while we were sitting there starving! No offer of soft drinks ( part of contract). Some guests were not served dessert/coffee after multiple requests and IF you were lucky and it finally came, it was delivered without a fork. Event planner told us she would be roaming the restaurant if we needed anything and when we went to look for her mid party was told she left the building and was not returning.I am still in shock after all the time we spent planning this once in a lifetime event.. I was embarrassed as the hostess to have had my party here knowing my guests went home hungry and making negative comments ( and rightly so) about the food and service. Go elsewhere for a special occassion t!!!!

This place is anti military! My son worked here up until recently, when he was asked not to return because he had to take off to fulfill his mandatory two week military duty. Prior to this happening, the manager, Jim, gave him a very hard time because he needed one weekend off each month for his monthly drills. Jim made my son extremely uncomfortable and tried to force him out because of his commitment to the US Army. When Jim hired my son, it was made very clear that my son had a monthly weekend drill, and would also require two weeks off in the summer for his annual training. As time went along and my son reminded Jim about the monthly weekends that he needed off, Jim began giving my son a very difficult time. My son is an excellent worker, very hard working, and has an excellent work ethic. This was not performance related, as he received many compliments about the service he provided, and was never notified by Jim that his performance was an issue. The owners of this establishment need to address this right away with this idiot manager, Jim, as he obviously doesn't know the law regarding employees who are serving in the military! I am a military veteran myself, served during the Gulf War, and this situation sickens me! I will be letting all of my friends and family know about how my son was treated by the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn & Tavern, and ask them to spread the word as well. I would like to ask everyone, especially our military veterans, to avoid this anti-military business. The right thing to do at this point is to fire Jim. I will also be filing a complaint with the Department of Labor next week, and spreading the word on other social media sites until Jim is terminated! I would also like the owners to post an apology here, and let me know that Jim was terminated for forcing my son out all because he wanted to serve his country.

Recently came here on a Friday afternoon. Was in town visiting family and my wife was at the nail place down the road so I opted to hang out at the Ho Ho Kus Tavern. Really nice vibe in the bar area. Friendly bartender, good music and newspapers laid out for customers to read. Casual and classy place without being pretentious.

The place was fun and the service was very good. The rocks drinks were very big which is what I expect when I pay $11 for a drink. Great atmosphere. Only negative I will give it was I found everything too salty. (AND I LIKE SALTY FOOD)

As everybody else, we love the ambiance and the service, but we found the food is not consistent, one day it was great and we came back for it and it was terrible. Mussels that were creamy and sophisticated one night, where rustic almost burned the other night. Same with the pasta I ordered. So yummi and delicious the other night, the lobster tender and succulent, now overcooked and together with the sauce just plain average. My husbands steak was good, but the side dishes were cold. Too bad, it is such a nice place.

The food was just ok. The decor is dated. My daughter got a pizza and definitely had frost bitten taste. We sent it back. My aunt had mussels that were very chewy. Overall not to impressed.

New American wonderful experience with classy presentations and fine cuisine. Duck and filet mignon rock. A wonderful, classy brunch alternative on Sundays from 10-3. Tavern menu available all day as an alternative. Terrific martinis.

Awful service at our last visit. Menu structure re-vamped again, even more confusing now. Food = 3 stars, Service = 1 - friendly by incompetent. Waited and waited for appetizers and kid's meals to come out. After what seemed like forever, the hubs and my entrees were brought to the table. Apps never came, kids' pasta nowhere to be found. They comped us coffee and desserts, which we weren't necessarily interested in. No manager visit, though he was standing off just to the side of our table for most of the night. Also enjoyed a fairly loud string of complaints being mouthed off by a haggard waitress to her colleagues, within easy earshot of several tables. Again - manager right there as well; nothing said to her or anyone else. Very unprofessional.

The Ho-Ho- Kus Inn is a lovely historical building. The interior is tastefully arranged and cosy. Bar tenders create perfect drink concoctions. The food, unfortunately is always hit or miss. Never consistent, which is really too bad.

Went for Sunday brunch. The website says carving stations and seafood. No sign of seafood anywhere and the rest of the selection was average. The carving stations consisted of leg of lamb that was finished when we got there. When I asked when the next piece was coming out, they said the carving station was done. This was about 1:15 and brunch ends at 3? Not worth $29.95. Went for a birthday. Should have just went to the Manor for 10 bucks more for brunch but you know what you're getting there.

The table service at the bar was terrible. If you want a drink DO NOT sit at the table but instead sit at the bar. Clearly not interested in making their clients happy. I had to send bus boys to find my waiter 2 times in a 45 minute stay. I was told that he was upstairs doing paperwork.

This is a " go to" place for me. I am always satisfied. Always a great place for a lovely meal or quick bite to eat. Both bar areas are cozy perfect for cold weather comfort while you are out. The entire restaurant is charming. In the summer there is an outdoor patio.

We were here when it was still Marcello's and it couldn't be beat! We went back when Marcello left and it was worse than your average school cafeteria food. We met friends there this past March (2013) and I am glad to say, it is back in great form! The renovations are beautiful, the service is great and the food is very good! I'm looking forward to the warmer weather when we can eat outside with our young boys!

The food was horrible. It was very bland. The place is nice but the food was not worth it. Probably the worst salad I have ever had.

I've been here many times for dinner and drinks with friends and colleagues. The valet parking is a nice touch especially since the place tends to be very busy on weekends. I've only been dissatisfied on one occasion when the fish I ordered was undercooked but have since ordered meat dishes and they have been excellent. Did I mention they have excellent oysters? The ambiance is great for a romantic dinner and I never recall seeing many young children there which can be distracting during dinner. I never have problems being sat for dinner as the place has many rooms and can accommodate you even on busier nights. My servers have been great. But not always in view which is what I expect for 4 stars. I drop in occasionally at the back bar where the bartender Kata mixes the best dirty martinis in Jersey and she's quick for refills, funny and very pleasant. I'm a bit of a foodie and expect a lot for 3 stars. This place is my goto in the area and always look forward dropping by.

I attended a party at the Inn, newly renovated and reopened. First the renovations are quite nice the rooms are clean and spare but play up the 1780 building; the bar is lovely and we had a good Bloody Mary, then we had brunch with excellent smoked salmon on homemade very tasty 'bagel' (tasted like a cross between brioche and bagel) with boneless leg of lamb (grilled) and salad. Service was up and down. The party had 45 people and two servers who were scrambling to keep up. I would recommend it; especially the bar which is a cut above the bars in area.

This festivity was an office holiday luncheon at the HoHoKus Inn. Not overly impressed unfortunately. We were given a few appetizers to start, first I thought was odd to serve an everything pretzel as a appetizer, calamari was OK but the sauce they gave you was not good at all. I could not even tell you what it was. They also ordered pizza as an appetizer for the group. I felt it had no taste at all. My main meal I had the lobster ravioli, where the lobster was on top and very rubbery. The sauce was bland as well. Service was good. I may come back in the Spring, they have out door seating.

We went here for our 6th Wedding Anniversary. The night started out on the right foot when 2 complimentary glasses of champagne were brought to our table. The food was fine. My scallops with a bacon jam was to die for! Our filet mignons were cooked to our requested medium rare time. And desert was delicious (Tiramisu and a rhubarb/strawberry tart). The wait service was friendly, informative and not too overbearing. The only drawback with our experience in the George Washington room was that it was too dark to read the menu properly. After dinner, the maitre di gave us a tour of the other rooms of the historic 1790 restaurant.

The Inn is a good looking place so it's got ambiance. Parking is fairly plentifully in it's lot and on the streets nearby. The service was attentive and servers are knowledgeable. Because I was using a discount coupon, it required that I call for reservations. I did, said I would be there in 20 minutes and was told that the only seating was in the Library. On arrival, I could sit anywhere. So organization - not so much. But wait...I went for the food. The mussels appetizer was very good, tasty and plentiful. The entre, braised short ribs was not hot. The fillet mignon was not hot. The mashed potatoes were not hot. Maybe that's why this place, with a lot of infrastructure going for it, has changed owners, menu and look, but still can't get me to give it over two stars. And I would like to, so maybe when I get another discount deal, I'll try it again. Maybe.

If you haven't been here before then you're missing out. We've been going here at least once a week for the last 3 years and recommend it to everyone we encounter. During the summer, they have the best patio in Bergen County. During the winter, you can't go wrong for a cozy & casual, yet upscale, setting in the Library / Tavern area. If you just want a nice dinner or are celebrating a special occasion, then you should DEFINITELY check out their several separate and intimate dining rooms. This place is hands down one of the best establishment in the area.

I thought the "All Day" menu offered some interesting options for lunch with my friends. We ordered the House Made Pretzels with Spiced Cheese Fondue, we each had the Lobster Soup, two of us had the Caesar Salad, and the other had the Cobb Salad. The service was very good as were the Bloody Marys. The food however, was disappointing. The pretzels were clearly microwaved and not made to order. The cheese was good, but hard to eat on the chewy pretzels. I will say that the Lobster Soup was very good, but pricey at $10. The Caesar Salad too was very good, though it was really an appetizer portion and not what I expected. The biggest disappointment was the Cobb Salad. It was dry, the lettuce was wilted, it was pre-tossed and the egg, bacon, avocado and tomatoes were minimal. It was not appetizing at all. In fact my friend didn't even eat the salad and no one asked if there was something wrong. It was really a shame as the atmosphere and service were very nice for lunch out with friends. Unfortunately the food did not live up to what I thought the menu offered.

The food was very tasty and the service was quite attentive without being intrusive. The ambiance was lovely, with background music and beautiful but somewhat unexpected decor: the decor seemed to be a successful fusion of art deco and hollywood regency glam, instead of period decor in line with what one would expect to see for a historical inn from the 1790s. Overall, my and my husband's experience at the HoHoKus Inn exceeded our expectations. We plan to be repeat customers and to recommend the dining establishment to others.

Went there for a Sunday lunch to celebrate my wife's birthday. The place is charming and very well decorated. The small separate rooms upstairs gives a nice intimate feeling. Service was very good and attentive. Menu choices were somewhat limited but still had your basic selection of meats, fishes, etc. I had the short rib which was OK. My one son had the fish which he said was good. Other son had a steak which was nicely prepared. Wife also had a steak which she said was OK (only issue was that there was a long hair in her vegetable side dish - sort of ruined her meal). All-in-all, nice place (except the hair) but the the food was just so-so.

Very nice menu and an excellent meal in the Inn...can't wait to try the tavern. Expensive, but had a great unique suckling pig dish and they did a great job with oysters and sushi grade tuna. Server was excellent and was very descriptive when necessary. Decor is tremendous....I'm a believer. Only complaint, side of french fries was pricey upstairs at $8 and they were soggy...I assume they were done and being heated under a lamp while my suckilng pig was prepared.

In two words, the "new Ho Ho Kus Inn" is very OK. Had lunch outside on the patio...nice venue. The traffic and road are close but the way the tables are arranged and the placement of the outdoor fireplace make for a more private feel than would be expected. The food is nicely plated and attractively presented. Prices are a bit high, although some items appear to be better priced than others. The two very small crabcakes for $14.00 as a lunch appetizer are overpriced--best part about the appetizer is the horseradish sauce which is lovely. The chopped salad lunch item is well-priced and abundant. People in my party ordering the French Dip found it acceptable, if not extraordinary. Some offerings sound like they are trying too hard to be "inventive" and only wind up sounding somewhat unappealing with a combination of too many ingredients. In a nutshell, nice outdoor atmosphere but too pricey for what you get. There are other nearby places that I would go to rather than return here.

Haven't been here in several years, probably 5+. This place has gone through many management changes for a good reason. Food has never been stellar here. I'm not sure how long the current owner has been there. If you want a consistent, good piece of the pie of the affluent crowd, you need to shine. Competition is stiff, so everyone needs to step up at least two notches. The ambience is fine. Service needs to get better. Most of all, the head chef and his kitchen staff need to take a short ride to NYC to really understand what it will take to win customers over. My wife was appalled at the steak she ordered. A good advice...serve grass-fed beef!

  • Jeff S.

Great after work drink at the bar, in a darker tavern feel. However the food is over-priced and not very good. The crowd is overly pretentious, and giving off a major country club vibe. Good for them but not for anyone that is younger or savvy enough to be reading yelp. The filet mignon sandwich was blah, with a couple fajita steak sized strips buried in grilled onions on a roll. Over-cooked and sloppy. The Croque Monsieur was a ham sandwich that they dumped extremely salty white cheese on top stuck it in the oven and gave it a french name. Our name for it would have included an english derogatory word for cheese log. The same waitress as last time... not great. I will go back for an overpriced beer because of the atmosphere, but recommend my freinds to try other restaurants for food.

Service iffy. Took half hour for our wait "team" to appeear. Chicken was a bit dry. There were 2 desserts to offer,1 with rum raisin ice cream on a souffle, the other vanilla ice cream. I asked to substitute vanilla ice cram for rum raisin & was told "no" that's a separate dessert. I mean, they had the vanilla out anyway. What nonsense.

  • Donna C.

Food is decent but overpriced. Service was attentive without being intrusive. However, our meal was spoiled because the couple at the next table received a steady stream of visitors throughout the meal, and they invaded our space. We were looking at the dessert menu when a woman came by and plopped down next to me on the banquette and proceeded to yak with the woman at the next table. It would have been nice if she'd asked me if I minded if she sat there. At that point, we decided not to add any more to the check. I wouldn't mind it at the Allendale Bar & Grill, but not at these prices! Another thing--they don't leave the bread on the table! They come around and let you select a little roll from a basket, and that's it! But the bread was excellent.

Overpriced lunch menu combined with terrible service and mediocre good make this a good place to avoid. The Hohokus Inn has gone way down since Claude was the owner / Chef there.

I just love the ambience at the Ho HoKus Inn. Sunday brunch is one of the best and most imaginative around however, the main menu still needs tweaking for dinners. The menu hasn't been changed since the fall of last year. It is summer and who wants to eat pork chops or lamb in the hot weather. There is nothing seasonal except for BBQ duck Breast now (June 2013). The current disappointing dinner and dessert menus need to be updated and keep up with the fresh fruits and veggies of each season. There is nothing creative right now especially if you frequent the Inn. I will stick to Sunday Brunch until that changes, They need a pastry chef to wow us after a meal. An ice cream sundae is something I can get at Dairy Queen.

I had my son's 1st birthday party here. i am a super anal, asian martha stewart. I am very picky and demanding and came in with several boxes of all my own handmade decorations. I was momzilla on steroids. The staff was super accommodating and polite. Service was amazing!!!! Everyone raved about how good the food was. It was better than the food at my wedding. The location itself is so darn charming, I just wanted to live there. All of my guests raved about the place and now my sister wants to make up an occasion just so she can throw a party here.

Brought the family back for dad's birthday this afternoon. Overall a good experience, but a couple of mgmt/training slip-ups should be noted. But, first of all...the brunch buffet is a good deal...good grain salads that offer a healthy alternative to the french toast (stuffed!) and baked goods. Burger was delicious, but would be more enjoyable on a larger bun that isn't half-soaked with juices before you begin to eat it. Bloody Marys had just the right amount of heat (and we do like that bartender!). However...if some people at the table get the buffet and some don't, it would be better to be told at the time of ordering that $8 is added to the bill if a non-buffet eater eats a buffet dessert (wasn't there a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode that covered that issue?). And - more importantly - we were a little stunned to find that a 14oz ribeye special was $40. Server neglected to mention this. It was good, but.... These are minor issues that mgmt should review with staff -- who are otherwise attentive and good.

I was intrigued to visit the Inn & Tavern when I learned that the establishment had new ownership, new decor and a new menu. Unfortunately, I was disappointed during my recent visit to the Tavern. The decor is okay and food is average. "Pub" standards are the norm here like burgers and sandwiches and salads, and the execution is fine, if not a bit sloppy. But it appears that it's the service that is really bringing this place down. The service was unorganized and haphazard, and still our server would be missing for 10 minutes at a time. The staff was also arguing in public and a computer error prevented us from receiving our check for 47 minutes (yes, we counted) at the conclusion of the meal. Because of this, we missed our scheduled movie time that evening. I don't think anyone would go back after an experience like that, especially with expensive prices for typical tavern food. I would ONLY return if the service improved, which at the moment, is very poor.

I've been coming to this location when it's been other restaurants, it's a landmark. Nice the updated it... and love the 2 bars - food is pretty good. I prefer to go late at night with my husband for some pub food... our dinner twice was OK, bit pricey and nothing stands out...

We have lived in Ho-Ho-Kus for more than 30 years and have seen at least 3 major makeovers of the Inn as well as several interem tweeks. We were in no rush to experience the latest iteration. However, we finally decided to give it a shot. Having said that, I'm a tad bewildered at it's current success. OK, so it was a Saturday night, but that should be a time to shine not make numerous, albeit minor, service mistakes. In addition you could sense the staff was not harmonious or friendly toward each other. If you have ever dined at a Morton's or Fleming's , you know the same sort of cold calculating business only type atmosphere. Food was OK, maybe a bit skimpy and overpriced. I think there are better dining experiences in Bergen County at this price level.

For years my family has supported and loved the ambiance, food and management at HHK Inn. Recently, the change in manager and other staff members has left a pretty "Bad Taste" in our mouths. If you are Gluten Free or a Vegetarian, be prepared to be greeted with a lack of hospitality and friendliness. Upon asking for any menu items that are GF or Vegetarian, the new Manager, Ben, responded with a very bothered response of "We are not a GF or Vegetarian Restaurant !" The other HoHoKus Restaurants in town, Janice Bistro and Albert's Cafe Amici couldn't be more accommodating, kind, helpful and understanding to my family's food restrictions. A simple and courteous offering of options and an eagerness to please the clientele is not a priority at the HHK Inn. With the exception of a few employees, this place has really changed. The owners and employees at Janice Bistro and Albert's Cafe Amici really care about their patrons.

I live in town and will tell you the town of Ho-Ho-Kus owns this location. The guy who leases the Inn from the town would like all to think it's his. The main restaurant is very nice, the taven is LOUD as hell, very bright, and has only four tables, sometimes complete with screaming babieis, and the bathroom in the taven is gigantic but also unisex, which I think is gross. The bar stools are very uncomfortable and the food sounds inventive but you don't get much of anything at all and it is overpriced. I had the turkey sandwich for $13.00 and received only 1/2 of a sandwich with barely anything on it. A beer is $10. It does have a regular crew of prentious jerks at the bar who do get soused which the town is finally keeping an eye on. I have been twice and would not recommend for a great dinner; just an expensive drink.

the food was quite good. The service was horrible and the attitude equally as bad. There was never I am sorry - 3 requests for bread, 2 requests for menus. The incorrect wine is brought over. The salad delivered and before we lift our fork -"how is your food". Waiting every step of the way or getting up to get to the waiter for the next item we needed and the topper was the complaint to the manager - very nicely I might add and the response was the same ....at these prices the service should be much better. By the way we noted the service in general in the dining room only was this way. All 3 of the people running around the dinign room appeared to have minimal experience.

waited outside at hostess stand for 10 minutes, finally busboy told us to go inside to get seated, no problem. went inside hostess told us to just go sit at any table outside. so we went back out and sat at a table. . .and waited 15 minutes no waitress, no greeting, no thing. . .got up and left. The place could be a real jewel in downtown ho-ho-kus. service/management is a big issue. 1 of the 2 male bartenders is surly. . .not going back - too many better options.

After many years of hearing about this place, I went there with my wife and her twin sister (and husband). I'd heard it had been 'renovated' and the place was very warm and friendly. We were seated and attended to right away. My wife and I ordered a Porterhouse for 2 special they had that night and although a bit pricey at $70... the steak was excellent. Nice and tender. It had a slight smokey (mesquite?) taste that I enjoyed, although my wife wasn't all that crazy about it. The mashed potatoes and creamed spinach that came ith it were also both excellent. The free-range chicken my sister-in-law and her husband both had was very good, or so they said. I would certainly go back again... for a special occasion anyway. The one 'fault' (which might not really be a fault) is that when my wife asked about one of their meals, the waitress said she didn't like it... that she didn't know why it was on the menu... and proceeded to push the Porterhouse for 2 on us. Again, it was a great steak, so I'm fine that we ended up choosing it. We'd just never heard a waiter/waitress bad mouth a meal before... Thought that was a bit strange.

My last experience at the HoHoKus Inn was fine, no issues & I looked forward to going back for dinner but that has quickly changed. My mom made last minute reservations for a Saturday night a few weeks ago and took the 5:30pm slot. I was running late by about 15 minutes or so and when I arrived at the restaurant, I was scolded like a child by the hostess for being tardy. After I apologized, she nastily explained that there was another party after us and we would have to be finished by then. Stunned, I walked to the table with my tail between my legs and joined my family. Fast forward to the meal; the food was tasty, overpriced and teeny tiny portions, perfect for dieters. So now we all order dessert, the waiter comes over and says to me that the next reservation canceled so we can "take our time". I said thank you. My parents were like what was that about and I explained the greeting that I received from the hostess. Both were shocked and said had they known we would have left. Needless to say we wont be back. If I were the owner and she was my employee, she would be fired. Kindness goes along way.

The food here was definitely good, but not fantastic. The prices are what you would expect to pay for a fancy restaurant in nyc and the ambiance made this appropriate, but I felt that the prices were high for the flavor we got in return. The crabcakes (a signature dish) were great and the arugula antipasto salad (also a signature) was good, but I've definitely had better. There was just something missing about it... not enough peppers, the flavor of the arugula didn't mesh with the flavor of the dressing... and the dressing didn't have a balsamic/tangy flavor like you'd expect on this type of salad. As for the main courses... my sisters weren't thrilled with theirs (the salmon and linguini w/ shrimp). The presentation on the salmon and duck w/ berry sauce (my dish) raised our expectations, though the flavor didn't quite deliver. The julienned vegetables on the side were delicious and the duck was enjoyable but I don't know, something about it failed to make me excited about it. So close, but not quite there. My mom subsituted the veal ravioli for the mushroom in a sage butter sauce. The sauce and ravioli filling were delicious, though the pasta itself was either dried out or a bit harder than al dente. Dessert was also good, though a bit off. The cream on the tiramisu had a peculiar flavor to it... cream cheesey or something, not what you'd expect and it didn't seem to go so well with the liquor taste. My mom ordered the napoleon because she was in the mood for a pastry, not realizing that it was "open faced." When it came out it was a puddle of pastry cream with flakes of pastry dough (looked like cereal flakes) , sliced almonds and berries. The presentation was unimpressive, though it tasted alright. The italian cheesecake was also nothing to rave about. Overall it was a nice dinner... It was a fancy colonial style restaurant and the ambiance reminded me of (though it was on a much smaller scale) the feel of One if by Land, Two if by Sea in the city. Only I've been dying to go back there, while I wouldn't be upset if i didn't get a return visit here.

My wife and I are veterans of the old Hohokus Inn. We dined there many times with my parents. We always had a great meal and service there although I always thought it a bit stuffy. Now redone and allegedly less pretentious the Inn has reopened to great fanfare and hoopla. Alas change is not always good. When you arrive you can take advantage of the complimentary Valet parking. Since a parking space appeared before the Valet we did not take advantage. We had made reservations and were promptly seated in a dining room upstairs. It was a Friday night and the place was busy but not crowded. We had dined in this room before and noticed immediately that it had been repainted and redone. The lighting was subdued and pleasant. Our waitress was young and inexperienced although she tried valiantly to answer my wife questions she did manage to get a few things wrong. No matter, may wife likes to grill her servers about all aspects of the impending meal and it is not unusual for the server not to know all the arcane aspects of every item being served that night. I must point out that other than the misinformation our server provided she was extremely eager and attentive if not always aware of the proper serving techniques. We did like the fact that the Tavern menu was available in all the dining rooms. We did not order from it but it was a less expensive choice We started with appetizers, my wife had a lobster beignet and it was very good but too salty. I had the New England clam chowder, also very good but too salty too. Then we split a dozen Blue Point oysters and everything was fine until the fifth oyster went in my mouth. It was bad. Very bad. It came out faster than it went in. I spit and spit trying to remove the taste. People noticed my distress, the waitress finally approached and asked if there was a problem. I told her the oyster was bad, she offered more, I declined and as I did so my wife scooped up her 4th oyster and popped it in her mouth. It was bad also. More offers for more oysters followed from the waitress who apologized profusely. I told her that it was not her fault and that these things happen. We proceeded with dinner after a trip to the bathroom to completely rinse out my mouth. I had the fillet Mignon with a garlic mashed potato wrapped in a fine pastry. It was delicious but my request for either A1 or Worcestershire sauce was met with a blank stare. The waitress had never heard of them. My wife had the Arctic Char and enjoyed it very much. We both had dessert and then asked for the check and to our surprise the oysters were still on the bill. Egads! We summoned our waitress who offered her now standard apology and disappeared for 5 minutes and returned with the bill. The oysters were not removed but were prorated and the 4 we did not eat because they were bad were removed but the rest were on the bill. I was surprised but did not want to make a scene and so paid the bill. In retrospect I should have raised holy hell. Before we left we were given a comment card that I filled out and told my tale of oyster woe. Sure enought the next day we got a 'canned', thank you from the restaurant but no mention of the oysters was made. I replied that I was none to happy with my treatment and got a reply with the now ubiquitous apology but no offer to placate us for the bad oysters. After another letter of complaint I was told to come back and introduce myself to the manager but with no promise of any incentive to draw me back. They also explained that they serve the steak in some reduction and extra sauces are not necessary. If a paying customer wants a well known steak sauce just in case his steak needs it, well I don't think it is an unreasonable request. I also think if I were running a restaurant and I served some bad food that I would have picked up the liquor tab, bought dessert or comped the whole meal and not prorate the dish. I think this was bad form but am interested in what you think. All in all I would not go back, the food was too salty and the staff too young and inexperienced and the management was clueless. For a bill of $200 including tip I know quite a few places where i can be more satisfied for about half the price and have management that knows how to run a business.

This review is for last evening, Thanksgiving. Being initially quite skeptical in regards to my family planning a Thanksgiving dinner outing, rather than the usual, 'friends and family' approach, I entered the Inn quite reserved. Upon entering we were pleasantly greeted by a very attractive hostess; which in my opinion is a favorable way to commence any dinner endeavor ;) The Inn and Tavern was pretty nice inside! Having passed this location literally hundreds of times, and having never entered, I was impressed with its ambiance. The staff, from the bussers to our waiter were really helpful and attentive. And I really enjoyed the dinner. I'd have preferred if the turkey was not prepared sous vide style, but estimating that a facility of this size conservatively serves roughly 250 dinners over the course of the afternoon/evening, there is really no other way to go about doing this. I'm just really happy that the turkey wasn't dry and chewing it didn't resemble having a mouth full of shredded cardboard like is the case when dining at my aunt Pat's for Thanksgiving lol. Having worked in many restaurants over my years, I was pleased with the dinner, and found why 10% of the population does indeed go out to dinner on this classic 'stay home' holiday. No preparation, no mess, no cleaning, no dealing with your pleasant uncle, none of the head ache. My parents and sister were all happy with the evening as well. And after we finished dessert and coffee, we rolled ourselves out to the car and headed home to relax. Aside from the one minor detail, dinner was great, and returning next year is a definite possibility, but before that I'd like to try them out for a non holiday dinner to sample their menu items.

Had my daughters Dinner at the HoHoKus Inn. I can't say enough great things about this venue and the entire booking process. Alena was a pleasure to work with in helping to coordinate everything. The evening of the event the staff was great and food was delicious. All or our guests commented on the ambience and quality of the food and service ( and most of my guests are in the hospitality industry. I would definitely host another party here.

High end mediocre Lovely atmosphere, sweet staff. Hoisin wings dry-tasted reheated Fish tacos skimpy and lacking. My husband enjoyed his burger cooked to his liking. Limited choices and many items unavailable.

We ate in a lovely private dining room , the Hermitage Room , beautifully decorated for the holidays , windows to the West and South. My Mother writes- "It was a perfect venue for my husband's birthday party. Twenty-one delicious dinners, all piping hot , miraculously seemed to appear , all at the same time. Ms. Bortolus , the Private Events Manager , charming and helpful in the planning , made everything easy. We could not have been more pleased. It was a lovely , gracious night. No wonder the Inn has survived since 1790! " Barbara McCooe Special thanks to the Hamms.

This was our first time to the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn and it was not as expected. We decided to go for Lunch which is probably our fault. We heard really great things about the food and we really are disappointed. We both found it to be just ok and nothing special at al. The decor and ambiance are excellent and it really gives that rich NJ feeling. We ordered for appetizers the sracha Wings and a dozen mixed oysters. The wings were just ok nothing to write about. My wife found the wings to be too spicy and couldn't enjoy them. The oysters were very well presented and tasted ok but again nothing impressive. They didn't have that fresh flavorful taste of a blue point oyster in the winter. They defiantly did not cover the $36 tab for a dozen oysters for Lunch. For the entree: The Hit Burger. It was way too much going on. The lettuce and tomato were so cold it overpowered the warm burger. I would say the burger was tasteful but again it was not a $15 burger. Maybe $9. Comes with a few fries that were very tasty. Grilled Vegetable Wrap : The wrap was kind of mushy and loaded with squash and eggplant that made it just feel like snot. The menu says "goat cheese" but this sandwich was missing any cheese. They did have aloli or something inside that just turned it into soup. Was not spicy. I would recommend maybe a portobello inside or something to keep it together. The sandwich was also small. Again not worth $14. Kids Turkey Sandwich : This sandwich was probably the highlight of our order. Luckily it was for our son. The bread was soaked in butter and toasted perfectly. The turkey was a little dry but our little guy didn't mind. We told the waiter "no bread" and instead it came with bread and no French fries. We didn't even realize it was supposed to come with fried until I just read the menu. $10 is perfect but they forgot little mans fries. Dessert Brownie Sunday and NY Cheesecake: The desserts were excellent and the best part of the entire meal. The cheesecake was amazing and probably the best tasting in the area. It was very small for $9. Brownie sunday was A+ and should be more than $4 but I guess the overpriced entrees make it up. We had two drinks and Bloody Mary and a Stella. No issues with the drinks. Bill was $123 before tip. The waiter was excellent and kind of stood near the bar the entire time since it was quiet. I would say the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn is probably a place to go for a nice winter dinner. Lunch just felt like a regular local tavern with a Capital Grill tab at the end. I suggest the owners of the HoHokus inn take a trip to Capital Grill one day so they can see how you serve a $100+ lunch menu and do it right. Three stars only because it's my fault for going for lunch and expecting dinner quality food. Even though I paid for it.

Nice venue. Good service. Unfortunately Irish pub like menu made space feel pretentious in dining room. Nothing special here.

Nice ambiance, nice service. Really disappointing food. In a word, bland! Appetizers were good, and then, unfortunately, the main course came. Bass was over cooked, and well, bland. My wife got the short ribs. Don't know quite how to say this, but they tasted like meat - in a not good way. No flavor at all. The spinach was absolutely awful. I almost choked on it. Took me back to childhood when I wasn't so smart and used to eat grass. Shouldn't have to pay this much to eat grass...

Could be a winner with some service fixes. Atmospere/Decor **** Located in what looks like an older home it has a very nice upscale pub feel. Although we ate in the bar the dining rooms were well decorated, comfortable and looked very intimate. The bar area lacks some of that feel as it is a little too brightly lit but has a nice fireplace running along the back wall. Service ** We entered through the separate bar entrance and were told we had to find the hostess in order to sit at the tables. I get it but the place was empty on a Monday night in the freezing cold and here was an opportunity to make friends. Maybe I am asking too much but with every table open it seemed ridiculous that we had to go find the hostess to seat us. Anyway we find the hostess who then takes us back into the bar to be sat. Since it was freezing outside we asked if we could sit at the table closest to the fireplace. The hostess says we cannot since that is a table set for 5 and we were only 2. I mention that I find it highly unlikely a 5 top will walk in the door at 8:30 on a freezing Monday night and if they did there was another 5 top 3 tables away. She starts going on about her manager won't let her and I just let it go. Our server was ok, took forever for drinks, but was capable otherwise. The busboy hovered over us and if couldn't clear our plates fast enough even if we weren't done. Food **** We ordered the Calamari which says it comes with Thai Chili but showed up with marinara was ok. We split the Chopped Salad with Grilled Chicken. I have to say it was fantastic. The salad had alot of interesting flavors and textures and the perfect amount of dressing. The Grilled Chicken was perfectly cooked, warm, moist and very flavorful without being overly marinated. Value *** Most entrees are $20+ and quickly escalate. We split the calamari and salad and had two drinks each which came to $76. Overall *** It looks like a great place and the food was very good but we felt we felt victim to the slow night service blues. We would try again though.

This was a pretty good restaurant, and I can see myself coming back. First off, we had Thai lime calamari from the bar bites section of the menu. It was pretty good, but not like most calamari dishes. It was not heavily fried, and had a great salty-but-sour kick to it. Sadly, it was served on a very small plate, which could've served as a good 1-person appetizer. As a main coarse, I had a filet mignon with a crumbled melted blue cheese sauce. I was not a huge fan of the sauce, but it was not bad. It was cooked excellently! I had two sides; fries, and spinach. They were both very good. The service was excellent! Our waiter would always come around to see if we needed another round of drinks, and always asked how all our food was. My only concern was that our main courses took a while to come out. The atmosphere of this place was great. It was probably the fanciest tavern/bar area I have ever been to! It was beautifully and elegantly decorated. Overall, I will probably be coming back. This is a great restaurant to enjoy a night out with some friends, or have a nice dinner with family!

Intimate dinner and drink setting, perfect for a small group of friends or a date night. Food options range from $9-$35 per person + drinks. A quiet little restaurant that offers a simple night out in a small area to really spark conversation with whomever you may attend with. They have two small bar areas and offer tables around the bars, ranging from two to six person parties. American cuisine options range from personal pizzas, burgers and sandwiches, and dinner meals of lamb, chicken, steak options as well as a decent selection of appetizers and deserts. Drinks offered a few craft beer options as well as domestic bottles, or various liquors. Great place I would recommend for a family dinner or date night. I went on a Wednesday night, the crowd demographics were generally female, ages 25-55. Wait staff (Anthony) was excellent and trendy and very helpful with craft beer selections. All & all, I would definitely return.

Get the fish. Well, I didn't actually have the fish but the filet mignon was tough and devoid of flavor. That said, the ambiance was lovely. It's a nice historical setting with fireplaces, tasty cocktails, good sides and friendly staff. I would go back on a wintry Tuesday night or seems perfect for Sunday brunch. I would defiantly go again for a couple of beers...the bar had a good vibe. I liked the place but give it 3.5 stars because I've had better steak at weddings.

The room immediately on the right when you enter, with the bar and fireplace, is still a very cozy feeling room on a cold winter night. They do not light the fireplace but fill it with lit candles instead. They had no bartender working the bar. However, people could, and did, still sit at the bar. The bread selection contained a variety of fresh looking and interesting breads. We went with the cheesey-flatbread-cracker one and stuck with it as our only choice for our dinner. It was probably the best thing we ate all night. For starters we shared the ricotta fritters with smoked maple and golden raisins. I was a bit disappointed that they were more like hush puppies than fritters. The dish was very sweet and would have been better with some whipped cream and served as dessert. Wife's main was the pumpkin fettuccini with rock shrimp, kale, pumpkin seeds and squash butter sauce. She said " the pasta was excellent - most pumpkiny pasta ever" My main was the chopped salad (butter lettuce, red onion, radicchio, cherry tomatoes, chick peas, capers, provolone with an oregano vinaigrette) with hanger steak. The portion side of the salad was skimpy. It was also quite under seasoned. The hanger steak was perfect medium rare and a perfect amount for the additional $6. Cupcake Trio: 1. apple with cinnamon buttercream, 2. chocolate-banana with chocolate ganache and 3. spiced with cream cheese frosting. The waitress told us the cupcakes are baked daily. It begs the question if all the leftovers are thrown out daily. The first two cupcakes were both on the stale side. The #2 had no trace of banana flavor. #3 was excellent. Waitress seemed somewhat indifferent when we told her about the stale cupcakes. Maybe I will return in another 2 years.

Food here is mediocre to poor. Kitchen was very slow on a weekday lunch. Burger was overlooked and dry and the fries were undercooked and greasy. Artic char with "root vegetables" came out served on sliced cucumber, raw diced green beans and totally smothered in a weird dill cream sauce. What a bizarre idea. Scary to think someone would think that was going to taste good. Gumbo was terrible and it's my fault for thinking a place like this could cook it well. Came out in a tiny little bowl, cold. Had one crawfish tail and maybe one shrimp and both were mealy. The dish looked like mud soup. I've been here a few times and walk away amazed how bad the food is. The patio and bar area are great but they need to hire someone to simplify the menu and make better food.

Driven by this place countless of times and never went in. Decided to go out with the family and this was the place. It's absolutely gorgeous inside and out, quite inviting actually. However, decor is not the end all and be all. Went inside, greeted immediately and seated. Waitress was polite, on top of her game and rattled off the specials and made sure we understood them. Then came the food, we all had something different and I of course got the steak. It was actually quite delicious. Dessert was even better! They have events from time to time on beer tastings, that's kind of my thing. However I would definitely give it another shot to see what else I might be missing on the menu. The price point is a little tough, but when you serve great food, it does make up for it.

I had a baby shower at the Inn on the 29th of March and i have to say that it was awesome!! The food was good, the atmosphere was great and everyone had a great time. The private room was so cozy and we were allowed to decorate how we wanted and it just came out amazing! I used the Inn's recommended bakery and the cake came out exactly like the pic i provided and it tasted delicious!!! No complaints from me and i would definitely use them again! Well done!!

This restaurant was chosen as a nice place for the family (6 adults and 2 preteens) for a special celebration. We were ready for a nice dinner. Out of the 6 adults only one enjoyed their dinner. The crab cake appetizer was mostly bread stuffing with no pieces of crabmeat. There was a favor of crab. The scallops appetizer was flavorful the Meyer lemon flavoring was a perfect pairing with the scallops. The Caesar salad had lots of dressing but no hint of garlic or much of any favor. The Inn salad had way too much stuffing. The topping on the steak was too salty so eat. The cheese flat crackers were the best part of the meal. What a disappointment! The service was great! The waiter and bus staff were very attentive. The service is the reason I am giving the restaurant 2 stars.

Came early on a Thursday (around 5pm). No hostess was outside so we went into the tavern bar area asking to be seated outside...waiter was friendly and for the most part attentive (forgot the extra side of ketchup I asked for when my burger came out and I didn't bother to ask a second time). Had one cocktail (some guava martini mix) which was pretty yummy and at the price point I would expect for the area (around 12 dollars). They have a decent craft beer selection (tap and draft). Wings were tasty but too much breading for my liking..Main reason for only 3 stars was the fact that my meal was pretty awful, mainly due to the fact that it was not cooked as requested. I got one of their burgers and asked for it medium/medium rare, which to me means there should be at least a trace of pink! It came out more like medium well to well done. I hate sending things back but almost came close to doing so when I saw how well done it was. Decided to just go with the flow and pretty disappointed..fries were for the most part soggy...have had much better burger meals for way less $...if I'm going to pay 16 dollars for a burger it should be cooked perfectly. On the upside they have a really nice patio section and some nice live music was starting as we were about to leave (probably started around 7)

Had a yummy meal here over the weekend.... A nice spot to have dinner then hang in the bar with a larger crowd later. Only call out: the service was great, but too fast. Courses came out within minutes of each other, and , not kidding, four different people in the span of 90 seconds tried to take our unfinished plates. Lay off dude, in still eating that. But the food was surprisingly delicious. Burratta, black bass, tagliatelli...the whole meal was tops.

I ate at the Ho ho kus Inn for the first time this weekend. I met some friends for Sunday brunch. I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. It's really cute and felt like it should be in New England some where. We each opted for the brunch special of unlimited mimosas and buffet style brunch. The spread was great! Not only was there a little of everything but the quality of food was really good. There was anything from fruit to omelettes & prime rib. I would definitely head back to check out their regular menu and again for their under $30 bottomless brunch.

Probably the rudest treatment ever. We walked in at 9 pm and the hostess was not at her station. A waiter said we should go to the back bar and when we went to sit down the manager came over and asked why we needed a table. When we said we wanted to grab a burger he said the kitchen was closed and said we should never have walked past the hostess. No worries we will never have to check in with the hostess at this place again! Lots of good places within a mile to eat. Sitting at nellies now. Glad we stopped in. Food and hospitality is much better than HHK inn
