Wonderful atmosphere. Great food. Teriyaki steak with cheese and broccoli, garlic mash. Sided by a garden salad that was fresh with dressing served separately. Great bar tender. Properly prepared mixed drinks. Only issue I experienced, was that I requested my steak to be medium and it was prepared medium rare, life is so hard :-). It was still very tender, and very good. Enjoy your meal.

Great food and service! If you're passing through Nebraska on a road trip make sure to steer clear of the fast food places near your hotel and try this local gem. They put love into their food and each bite shows they care. I've only had the burger but went back for another! Underneath the "blood red" ripe local tomato you'll find house ground Midwest beef. Very juicy, nothing fancy with a brioche bun, just good honest food prepared well. ----------- UPDATE: ----------- I went back, expecting the same ripe tomatoes since its summer, but it didn't happen. After four wonderful meals I experienced a horrible salad with white (not green) lettuce cores, crunchy pink Sysco tomatoes and overly salty Beef/vegetable soup, likely from the daily salad bar leftovers which made it concentrated. Taste your soup before serving, if it needs to be adjusted then correct or do not serve. I am convinced there isn't an onsite chef during dinner service. Shockingly worse than local chains, what a huge difference. Clearly they are inconsistent. Sadly disappointed.

A childhood establishment for me so it is hard for me to give them a bad review. My first time back was last week (15 years later). It is what it is and you have to go in with an open mind. Our server clearly did not want to be working as it was her Birthday. Was there with a large group which is difficult anywhere but she was very annoyed by us...stating every time she couldn't reach over to hand food or drinks. No problem...I will grab it...just stop saying that!! Oh well....a great family tradition in York and we will continue to go back. Just mediocre food which is kind of too bad :-(

Old school restaurant in good ol' York. Straightforward place that does things right while relying on standard Sysco shortcuts as needed. I haven't been to York since I was a child, but recently had an opportunity to grab dinner here and seized the opportunity to try it out. Their menu is huge and it was difficult to decide what I wanted. My dining partner is a very decisive person (e.g. he knew what he was ordering before we even walked in the door), so I had about 3 seconds to choose when the waitress arrived. I ordered the Caesar salad with chicken and it did not disappoint. The lettuce was fresh, the chicken was well seasoned and cooked properly, and the dressing did not overwhelm the plate. There was a good balance of garlicky croutons and Parmesan, too. My only complaint is that when sticking with water for a beverage, the glasses were small. We should have asked for a pitcher of water, in hindsight. Seeing as though I don't get out to York very often, I can't be sure of a return visit. But if I do get out there in the next few years, Chances "R" this restaurant will be a solid choice for a meal.

Walked in to friendly greeting, prompt seating, cloth tablecloths and napkins. We ordered a dinner salad and split a filet mignon dinner and were very satisfied. Steak was done to perfection, tender and juicy.

Tried to eat here. Walked in, place looked like typical small town "upscale" restaurant, leftover from when it was probably good. Stood at the front of the restaurant, no "please wait to be seated" or "seat yourself" signs, so we waited patiently for an employee to approach us. A host or hostess? No. A server help us out at all? No. Several passed by, made eye contact, didn't bother telling us to wait or that someone would be there to help shortly, just walked on by like we weren't there. Then I looked around. Nothing but older farm folks, 65+. Usually a good sign for breakfast, not so for lunch. Finally, I walked into the other dining space and I was immediately accosted by the smell of either pig poop, cow poop or a fine combination of the two. The carpet was as old as the patrons and probably had boot filth rubbed in over the ages. Then I saw the entrees, probably best we weren't helped to a table. Walked out and walked on.

Chances R has amazing prime rib. It's their specialty. It's their monicker. If you go to Chances R and you order something else, you may be disappointed, but you will never be disappointed by the prime rib. It's always tasty, always tender, and always large. The service is good, not great but good. But, the prime rib makes up for any other deficiencies. I got the Husker Cut for an extra $3. So, if you take the time to come off of I80, and you order something other than prime rib, you will have missed a truly great opportunity to taste an American treasure.

Great hometown cooking! Always friendly staff and food is excellent. Would highly recommend this!! Best fried chicken IN TOWN!!!
Very old school kinda feeling. The chicken fried steak was delicious with a made from scratch kinda feeling. The beef medalions were good but the portion was small. Kids spaghetti wasnt too good my son didnt want to eat so I tasted it and wasnt a fan either. My daughter had the hand fried chicken and she couldnt get enough. So either its hot or not here but definitely worth a stop if your traveling down 80 through nebraska.

Family owned restaurant and lounge. We had poppers for an appetizer and they were good. Only had a Caesar salad with grilled chicken, but it was decently sized. The cheesecake dessert was heavenly. If ever I stay in York again, I'll try a heartier dish.

We had great service and a table immediately. However the good was pretty tired. It seems like they have been serving the same thing for too long. My spinach. salad was a little limp and the sprouts garnishing it also past their prime. However my beer was served promptly and with a smile.

Very disappointed. Food was just ok. Very pricey for what you get. Having just come back from Texas, I laughed because prices here were more than the tourist traps on the ocean. Will not come back here again.

My family and I have enjoyed Chances R on road trips since I was a teenager and now I am 50. For years, this comfort food has been worth the stop and money. THAT IS NO LONGER TRUE! Although my prime rib was very good and so was the homemade fettuccine. My Mom's chicken fried steak was over cooked. To top it all off, the "hostess" who may have been the manager or owner had the personality of a rug and rudely said to two different tables when the Friday crowd and waiting line got long, "I never do this but can you give us the table?" Mind you, this was only after they paid bills for appetizers, $18 entrees and dessert!! Too bad these owners have no competition or the rudeness and slow service would put them out of business!

We attended a wedding rehearsal dinner in the banquet room at this restaurant. Great setting, and perfect for a live band and about 100ppl or so. The food is good quality and if you can, you must eat their fried chicken. It's probably the best I've tasted in the state for over 20 years. Really great chicken! The side dishes are flavorful but not for those on a diet. A little heavy in dressings. Other great dishes are the chicken fried steak, and their pulled bbq beef. All good and nice people serving you.

The prime rib was so good I ate it 3 nights in a row while visiting York a few months back. I was here about 10 years prior and things hadn't changed, which is a good thing. The homemade blue cheese dressing, although not traditional, is incredible. Service is good and consistent. Worth the trip if you're coming from the highway while on a road trip.

I grew up in York, the Chances 'R' is a place of great memories and personal nostalgia. Coming back, I realize how affordable the menu is. Everything is excellent. Be sure to try the pan fried chicken and mashed potatoes. If you're ordering mashed potatoes with any dish, request the chicken gravy. To die for. Be sure to try their Mexican night. I think that's on Mondays or Tuesdays.

Just a few things here: 1. Sunday Brunch Buffet- Absolutely Amazing 2. Sat. night Prime Rib Buffet- One of the best you will find, and it's ONLY $20. Other than that, you won't go wrong with any of their sandwiches, steaks or whatever. Personally, my favorite is their pan-fried chicken. Mashed Potatoes and gravy are awesome with it. Their house french dressing is one of my all-time favorites as well. Their normal menu would be a 4 star rating for me, but, the Fried Chix, Sat. night prime rib buffet and Sunday brunch bring it up to an easy 5 stars. Honestly, for the price, you're not going to find much better that I know of. This is one of Nebraska's best. They usually cater the Nebraska Cattlemen's Ball. So, needless to say, they must have some pretty quality beef and do a great job cooking it to get that event every year.

We love Chances R. We have made many trips along I-80 over the decades and always stop here for a meal, no matter what time of the day. The salads are excellent and have dark greens. Soups are a tad salty but have very good flavor. The pork tenderloin sandwich is about as good as you're going to find. Everything we've had here has been tasty and well-prepared. The Sunday brunch will absolutely knock your socks off!

What the hell happened here? This ussed to be the only place to go out for a nice meal in York. I came every time I was back in town, longing for it all. Wow! What a dissapointment! It's gone downhill and fast. The quality has diminished-- all around, food, service, even the building. This time (quite possibly my last visit unless they turn it back around) even the air conditioning was either off or way too low. We were sweating in our booth, and it was impossible to enjoy ourselves while being so uncomfortable. Next time, I will just go to Runza! My suggestion, take a pass!

When I find myself traveling down I-80 through Nebraska en route to where ever, I plan our entire itinerary around driving by this one restaurant in time for a meal. Chances R is everything good and wholesome about the Midwest, wrapped up in one small building in York, NE. You know those 'family' recipes that you thought were lost forever when your great grandmother passed away? They secretly live on in Chances R. Chances R serves the best American classics. There are choice Omaha steaks, biscuits and gravy, freshly baked pies, and an assortment of French-inspired American-adaptation recipes that I thought had disappeared with the 60's and Julia Child. And if all of this sounds too safe and routine for a family-run, Midwestern steakhouse, there's escargot on the menu too. The last time I went, I had an order of pan-fried chicken. The breading was fried so consistently golden, I could have sworn it was deep-fried. The meat was as flavorful and juicy as chicken can get, and with the enough spices to make the colonel jealous. Even better was the side of potato chowder, filled with freshly cooked chunks of smoky bacon. Even the dinner rolls were freshly baked and served piping hot from the oven. Such rich and hearty food can't be good for your health, but it works miracles on your spirit and chances are I'll be back very soon.

Spectacular experience, like previous comment the prime rib was amazing. Home made rolls were spectacular. Cool place. It's a good place to specifically stop by and eat at on your way down the 80. I'll be going back on my way home from ragbrai.

Chances 'R has been a part of the York community ever since I can remember. I remember as a little girl going to "The Hob Nob Lounge" for dinner with my family, which then became known as Chances 'R. The food is extremely good-fresh and homemade. There fried chicken and chicken fried steak are my absolute favorites arriving to your dinner table with homemade mashed potatoes and real pan gravy. The only negative comment I have is that the prices are a little high, but the food is worth every bite you can eat.

My wife and I were road-weary on the way from Philadelphia to Denver. We were staying in York and a woman recommended Chances 'R'. We like that its friendly and family-owned. It's nice to eat somewhere unique, rather than another Pizza Hut or Lonestar Steakhouse. The place is huge. There's a big lounge, a casual dining room, and others we didn't explore. The food was okay, but not fantastic. The side salads were pretty ordinary, iceberg lettuce with some red cabbage shavings and onion. The blue cheese dressing was mild for a blue cheese, tasting in between sour cream and blue cheese. I liked it, my wife was more 'meh.' I had the fried chicken, which was cooked well but a bit bland for my taste. The mashed potatoes were tasty, but there was too much gravy. And it's hard for me to say "too much gravy." My wife ordered the mountain trout and to our surprise it was cooked whole, so it was looking at her as she ate it. And it was a bit overcooked. Everyone at other tables got onion rings, but since we had a lot of greasy food for lunch, we didn't. They looked good, though.

If you're going to operate a restaurant in a small town, I don't care if it's Quechee, Vermont or Brooklyn, Connecticut or York, Nebraska, you better do a hell of a job because you certainly can't rely on foot traffic and if the locals hate you your customer base is shot. I came here on a night where they offered a "prime rib buffet" all you can eat, about $19 pp. My previous experience with this steakhouse and lounge was good, so I did not hesitate when it was suggested. Two thick slices of prime rib did not dissapoint, the buffet had the usual salad stuff and this being the midwest had an awesome variety of potatoes (the baked potatoes looked especially well prepared). I say looked, cos I stay away from the stuff these days (starches) but I did appreciate the spaghetti with bolognese sauce, as I like a pasta course when I eat out. Sure it was basic and probably meant for kiddies, but with a salad to boot I could easily dig into the prime rib (and I'm not usually a prime rib fan). The buffet was located in the beer hall section in the back, and for a six o'clock on a Saturday there was a line out the door for the main restaurant and the beer hall was almost packed. This place does a hell of a job, it is located only 2 mi. north of I-80 in the cute downtown area (actual shops and banks there, downtown apartments even; there was some kind of pre-Hallowe'en party going on which had so many people in attendance I coulda mistaken it for an Obama rally).

Dirty and dated. I have eaten here a ton over the years primarily because there is really no where else to eat. You better pray you love your food and service because the owners could careless either way. There are some good items on the menu but it's been the exact same menu forever. Ate there the other day with my family and everyone's food sucked. When I went upfront to pay our $53 bill, the owner asked me if everything was ok (kinda like the cashier at Walmart asks if you found everything you needed and if you say you couldn't find something they don't even acknowledge it - point is they don't care about the answer, they are just asking to ask and only want to hear positive comments). Anyway, I thought what the heck I'll tell her we didn't enjoy our food. She responded defensively and said your total is $53. What a joke. I have longed for the day competition comes to town and runs them out of business. But so far, luck has been on their side. In the 12 years I have lived on the area, only one reputable restaurant has come to town.

Based on the other reviews, I really really wanted to love Chances R. However, my experience there just didn't quite match up with the reviews that led me to this place. I went with my grandmother and sister. We ordered the chicken-fried steak (a bit too greasy and not crunchy enough), the sirloin steak (just fine), and a reuben sandwich (pretty good according to my grandmother, so it must have been damn fine, because she's one picky lady). The fries were pretty typical. The mashed potatoes and gravy were pretty darn good. Rolls=I'll take a whole bag to-go, please. The ambiance was right on: everything you could possibly desire from your local diner... sparkly sign and all. So, all this said I would have given this 3.5-4 stars. The lack of stars comes from the service. My grandmother ordered a beer and I had an iced tea. Both items only showed up with prompting... first for the beer, and then the iced tea. I dunno, maybe the waitress was just a little off that evening. Anyway, three stars for now, and I'll do a re-review the next time I do a road trip down I-80. Without a doubt, I would still recommend it over any fast food place we passed along the way.

First things first: Those who criticize Chances R are - and this is obvious - communists suffering from toe fungus and head lice. Anyone who questions the greatness of Chances R fails to understand what is most wonderful about the United States of America. And, worst of all, those who question Chances R are probably Dick Cheney supporters. Great steaks. Great service. Great atmosphere. Greatness stacked upon greatness. Chances R should be placed on Mount Rushmore alongside Lincoln, Jefferson, Washington and Jimmy Carter. Listen, I understand those of you who want to criticize Chances R are suffering from head lice, toe fungus and a brain that resembles scrambled eggs, but please keep your communist stupidity to yourselves.

This was one of the restaurants that was recommended to me when I had to take a trip to York. Now, I travel to small towns often so I've learned to adjust my expectations accordingly and this one restaurant just didn't cut it. I arrived at dinner relatively early and stood awkwardly until someone acknowledged me. Then they asked me to sit in the waiting area until my table was ready which would have been fine if half the restaurant wasn't empty. I sat down for about 30 seconds and then they came to take me to my table. It was almost as though they just wanted to seem super busy. I was a little surprised at how expensive some of the items on the menu were. There was a shrimp basket for $17.95 or something crazy like that. I mean, I know you are probably importing the shrimp but I thought it was a little high for the small town. I ordered on of the burgers (though now I can't remember which one) that came with mushrooms and onions on it. I expected these veggies to be sauteed or something. When it came out, I saw that it was actually more of a gravy which I wasn't a huge fan of. I just scraped most of it off and ate the meat patty. I think I read somewhere that they had "world famous french fries" but they oddly resembled the Ore-Ida crinkle fries that you can buy at the store. Maybe this is a Nebraska thing because I went to Runza later in the week and their fries were the same. The best part of my meal was the ice cream cake (I think it was called Mud Pie) that I ordered at the end. I would recommend going there if you want to eat dessert for dinner which I'm definitely not opposed to.

What happened to Chances R? This used to be a 4 or 5 star place. Roast beef was only fair, Shannon's pan fried chicken was bland, brown gravy was really salty. What a disappointment.

Comfort food. Not soul food, trendy or upscale. Straightforward homemade chicken fried steak, homemade crispy hash browns and gravy. No surprise fried chicken, Nebraska steak, and to die for homemade rolls. Delectable desserts ranging from Creme Brûlée and carrot cake to chocolate torte. Piña Colada easy on the eyes and tasty. The ambience is small-town, attempting to be elegant. The service was affable and timely. No reason not to go back, I hear the Sunday Buffett is amazing, but won't rush back either.

I grew up in York, NE. Yet, I don't think I ate here more than twice. If you're a local, this was the nicest place in town and, well, it still is.

I stopped in while driving through town and really enjoyed this restaurant. This place is a cozy, family run restaurant that serves good, homemade plates at excellent prices. Good service, good food, nice staff, and easy on the wallet. Most likely the best restaurant in York.

I had the French Dip. It was excellent with the only exception being that the au ju was quite salty. Great bathroom! Nice atmosphere.
