Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Taco meat had no spices, very bland. The burritos came with gravy, not what I look for from a Mexican restaurant. I would not go back.

My favorite Mexican place! My family and I have been going here for many many years and many more to come! You do have to order the correct thing. I have brought friends who have ordered some things and did not like it. I ALWAYS get the 2 soft shelled tacos with the rice and beans! You can never go wrong with this! They also have the best original cheese dip! Make sure you tell them specifically what cheese dip you want they have 2 kinds ones white and ones the original yellow one I'm unsure of the names sorry! The yellow is my favorite with a mix of the flour and corn chips. This place has gotten better with the renovations they did a few years ago they have a great big back room for and the new patio area! Well worth the long wait! Also excellent margaritas, you can buy a single or a whole pitcher, the single ones usually taste better though!

Cleanliness 3 Service 2 Food Quality 4 Likelihood 4 1-5 (5 Best!) 3.3 Special Birthday Dinner for 4 please! This was our first time here, our two guests had been there several times. It was a so busy for a Tuesday night! We had a 25 minute wait to be seated. I noticed right away how loud it was, more like a bar level in terms of noise, instead of a restaurant level. The small front patio room we were sat in was very noisy. It was VERY difficult to have a conversation at the table. After being seated for some time we were greeted by our order taker. She returned sometime later with our beverages. I reminded her that I drink a lot of both iced tea and water. Our appetizer arrive, chips and salsa with both corn chips and flour chips. I would have expected the chips to be warm. The salsa was fresh and tasty, nice! My beverages ran out, and our order taker was no where to be found. The food arrived and she refilled them then. Who would have thought brown gravy (yes, what you would put on mashed potatoes) would be good on a burrito! I didn't love my meal. When I ordered I was not given a choice of what meat I wanted, there were three options AND I forgot to say chicken. I guess beef is the default. The flour shells were interesting, not a huge fan of them. Did I mention this brown gravy thing... LOL it was so good! I never did get a second refill. I finished my meal without a beverage. Other tables where having the same issue (refills, hot sauce, etc.) No manager on duty that I saw. If you are looking for a place to have a conversation... this is not it. If you are looking for a place with great server experience... this may not be it. If you are looking for decent food and a great bar type environment... THIS IS IT!

It felt overpriced and not authentic. Less like Dos de Oros and more like La Mesa meets McCormick's gravy mix. This is the first time I've heard of gravy on a burrito. Maybe I don't get out enough or know enough about international cuisine to sound so pretentious, but it did not work for me. Food was nothing really special, which is sad considering some of the locals praise this as an awesome spot. My friend actually recommended it to me. In retrospect, his staple diet is ramen noodles and cheap beer, so I guess it was my mistake to lend him credibility in the "tastes great" department.

Made us wait 30 mins to sit down even though we had reservations. Food was average. Service was poor. They added 20% tip and wouldn't remove it. Won't go back. Plenty of other better options in the area.

I had their Burrito Ranchero yesterday for Lunch (They only serve lunch on Fridays) and it was nice. Nothing out of the ordinary but very reasonably priced. The daughter of the owner came over to talk to us for a while. Another relative will be opening another Mexican Restaurant in town soon. They have remodeled and have a nice sized party room in the back. Cash only.

Arrived at 6:15 and didn't get seated until 7:15, all the while waiting in a small area with approx 30 other people. It was 101degs outside and worse inside with no air moving. Food was good, but I would not go to Maria's anytime outside of Nov-Fed. Worst experience in my dining history due to the heat.

I don't know why I keep doing this to myself. Eating Mexican food in Nebraska. The description Yelp provides for a two star rating perfectly describes how I feel. Meh. I've experienced better. Maybe it's the "experienced better" part that makes me somewhat critical. The food is just ok. It's not terrible, please don't get me wrong. In fact, it may satisfy some unavoidable Mexican food craving, but you won't leave saying "Yep. That was worth the long wait." The drinks were reasonably priced, but not that good. Tried a Mexican Mule and some sort of beer/margarita mix that I had to send back. The frozen margarita mix was tasteless and chunky. My enchiladas were two star. I initially thought these are pretty good, but the more I ate, the more I realized that I was just really hungry. Soggy flour tortillas holding together my enchilada is never my favorite thing. I don't get the high ratings from lots of folks. Other than there just isn't anything that good to compare it to around the Omaha area.

I actually meet Maria, how awesome the owner actually comes around and says hey to everyone. Very family oriented, this place is huge, had my royals baseball on, and gave us tequila samples!!!!
(5)Laura B.
One of my Ralston favorites! Margaritas are strong and delicious, the guacamole is fresh, and this is one of my favorite Mexican places. My most recent visit was for happy hour with friends, which features a good amount of specials (it was a weekday). I had guacamole and a single tamale, along with a house margarita. Previously I have ordered combination dinners and never been disappointed. The service is fast and friendly, and Maria's is always packed. I have not yet sat out on it, but they feature a semi outdoor covered patio that would be perfect for summer nights in Ralston...
(5)Heather L.
I love coming here on Tuesdays for their 2 for $5 tacos. I get full off of one of these they have the fried shell and filled full with beef and toppings. Their margaritas hit the spot and will have you leaving feeling tipsy!
(5)Dean I.
Really? I've read several reviews. I'm sure everyone has their own idea of what they are hoping for when visiting a restaurant. While some grade based on experience with a variety of menu options, others may decide to hang everything on one particular dish. Maria's is known for their soft shell tacos. If you like tacos, you'll love these. I haven't found anything close, since coming here 35 years ago. Want something to drink with your tacos. The margaritas are relatively (very) expensive from what you could find other places, but they are top notch. I always spring for the pitcher. As some others have said, they are very strong so be warned. I have had other menu items that may not meet or exceed comparable Mexican cuisine from other establishments; but, what are reviewers or potential patrons really expecting? Go here for the tacos and margs and you will be happy you did.
(5)Alex T.
Whether its carryout ir dine-in, Maria's is worth the wait. Maria herself floats around saying hello and seating customers. Its always good when the owner is fully involved and on site. Fantastic pico and fried soft shell tacos.
(4)B W.
Really disappointed with this restaurant. Server was cordial but horribly slow and inattentive. Drink refills were not offered until well late into the meal, not that I would have ordered another bottle of beer after my first one was far from being cold. Food service was also slow. Apps came out late which is ridiculous for chips and cheese. We had been sitting at the table for over an hour before the entrees arrived. The chicken and beef were the most bland I have had. No seasoning what so ever. I can't believe this place has been in business for so long.
(1)Mary Janel S.
Definitely not what I expected. Everyone raved how great it was so I was excited, then disappointed. I LOVE apocryphal red pork chili. I asked the waitress for the apocryphal red pork chili. She said you don't want the red if you want hot. The green is the hotter. I was puzzled and said okay if you say so. I ended up exchanging for the red and I was right in rye first place. The food didn't seem to have much true flavor, pretty bland. I was married into a Mexican family for years and this just seemed to Americanized and oh my god it was so loud you couldn't talk to one another. I learned some of my Mexican cooking from the best Mexican restaurant in town: Nettie's in Bellevue is the ultimate. I suppose after eating theirs for so long it's no surprise I wasn't impressed with Maria's. Sorry but my personal opinion. Then don't go in with a prepaid Visa card. They claim their machine can't take them yet everyone else can. Just another way to get cash. I was overall not happy when they this meal and have zero intentions on returning myself.

This is a hidden gem in Ralston. The food here is amazing. My wife and I started with the queso and chips which was fantastic. Usually the table salsa is blah but this stuff is great with a bite on the back end. The tacos are huge and made by hand. These things are made in to a neat and handy pocket so the insides don't fall out which can be a huge problem with tacos. This place should be a landmark. Come early because it fills up fast!
(5)Ashley G.
My husband grew up in the same neighborhood as this family, and they used to sell tacos on the corner every once and a while to neighborhood folks. They were a hit then, and they're a hit now. These tacos are awesome, the shells are super rad. I could eat them alone by themselves, with just some lettuce and sour cream. YUM. Each time I've been we've been seated almost immediately, we have a VERY low wait time for our orders being received and once they're in you wait about 10 minutes or less (probably less) for your food to come out. Its hot, and ready and yummy- These folks are always slammed and manage to bring our food out pronto. Thank you!! The food at ANY restaurant doesn't have to be amazing, its the timing of when the food comes out and the quality of how its made. The food here has awesome quality, its certainly not haute cuisine but its so tasty. I crave this food now. Each visit to this area and we eat here no matter the circumstances. =) Thats all you need for great food. Consistency, and this place has it.
(4)Jessica Y.
One of my coworkers raved about this place, and I had already tried (and hated) Cali Tacos. I ordered the Surf and Turf tacos (fish and steak) with rice and beans. The tacos were fine, I though the shell was better than Cali Tacos - whatever, nothing special. The rice and beans were inedible. So gross, I have never been so offended by these two side dishes in my life. The rice was dry, and the refried beans were a disgusting paste. I tried mixing the two to make it better, but that didn't help AT ALL. If the sides were better, I might have thought about going back.
(2)Erin R.
Maria's ranks 2nd or 3rd on my tacos in Omaha list (behind Cali Taco and the south O food trucks). The soft tacos are fried and delicious. They don't quite compare to Cali Taco, but are still delicious. They just recently went through a renovation that I think really lightens up the place and added a really nice conditioned patio. I'd stay away from the Maria's sauce as it is more of a gravy (as others on Yelp have stated). It doesn't quite fit for me on Mexican food, but some must like it. The food is all basic staples and since they've been doing it for over 30 years I think they have perfected it. They take credit/debit cards here now. You will definitely leave weighing a bit more than when you walked in but its worth it. If you are looking for a delicious taco and don't want to head to Cali Taco or South O head to Marias.
(4)Natalie F.
This place is ranked #1 on the worst place to eat list. The restaurant itself is gross and needs plenty of deep cleaning. The food is horrible, I don't understand how in the world this place has such good rating, I ordered enchiladas which in my opinion are pretty dang hard to screw up but this place screwed them up and bad. I got old flour tortillas filled with a big gooey glib of velvety cheese smothered in tomato paste. That's Mexican?! This place is nothing but a big insult to Mexican food!
(1)Keenan T.
Best Mexican in town! Their house tacos are made with their flour tortillas and are so fluffy and delicious! We went here for the first time recently and we won't be going anywhere else for mexican anymore. Their beans and rice are made fresh daily with no additives or preservatives and taste amazing!! If you're looking for a fantastic Mexican place to try and haven't been here yet you should try it out.
(5)Kimberly F.
Have been going here for 30 years. The tacos are amazing and the maragrita's potent. This is a family staple for us. As with some of the reviews, it is not tex-mex! So people expecting fajitas, nachos, condiments made popular in Southwest US... this is not the place for you. The owner makes food she grew up on and has passed this on to her family.
(5)Copen G. M.
Went here twice in the past month. Both times were good. Wait staff was friendly. Lunch was kinda busy but Friday Night was totally packed. They told us 30 minute wait and it took 50 minutes. Not the best with 3 little kids to handle while waiting but my wife wanted to try the signature tacos. She likes them but thought they needed some sauce. I had the pork tacos. They were pretty good. I'd go back. Seems they're not open for lunch on most days. Kind of a bummer.
(4)Audrey C.
I'm writing this review purely on the tacos and margaritas only! If you want Americanized Mexican like Fernandos, this isn't the place for you. This is a family run restaurant, and it's obvious they use their own recipes (hence brown gravy on the burritos) So I can see why people don't care for it. The Margaritas are out of this world, at $21 for a pitcher, you will know why. Please have a DD if you plan on drinking more than 1 of these bad boys. Yikes! So good though..... Now on to the tacos. Fluffy, fried, stuffed pouches of heaven. I think it's the cheap cheese (government cheese? perhaps?) that make them so good. On Tuesdays you can get 2 tacos for $4.99. That and some margaritas and you are set! They have remodeled in recent years, and now accept cards. Don't believe the haters, Maria's is decent.
(4)Sarah G.
The nachos (chips w beef and cheese, jalapenos on the side) were good, and the margaritas were killer, but nothing else was worth gushing over. My curiosity got the best of me and I had to try the gravy-laden beef, bean and cheese burrito (which reminded me more of something I'd eat at the Bohemian Cafe than a Mexican restaurant). Luckily I traded half of that for a chicken enchilada and had a chicken taco to supplement. Oh, and people comparing these tacos to Cali Taco is blasphemy... sorry. Maria's has been around for more than 30 years, and it shows. The meals and menu are the time-tested staples and there's obviously no need for variation. Salsa in a restaurant syrup dispenser sits out on the table, Fernando's style. Even sour cream, which you have to specially order, comes in those tiny packets. And there's no need for embellishments like cilantro and guacamole either. All in all, it was definitely some gut-sticking gluttony, but not worth a special trip back unless it's for the margaritas. Woo Weeeee!
(3)Drew D.
Maria's has always been fantastic every time I visit. This family owned and ran establishment is a unique and phenomenal gem in Ralston. Maria's sets themselves apart from all the other Mexican restaurants with their quality, atmosphere, and their style of Mexican. You cannot leave Maria's without trying their world class tacos or delicious margarita blends. Their menu make look simple but the quality and effort they put in both their food and margaritas is well worth the visit.
(5)Jeff F.
This place is horrible. Strike 1: As you walk through the door there is a sign saying no Credit Cards accepted and there is an ATM which charges $2.95 fee. Strike 2: Ordered Queso Dip. It is Velveeta cheese in a little bowl. Decided to ask for Salsa. Strike 3:They don't have salsa. No Salsa at a Mexican Restaurant???? We should have left at that, because they were out, but we decided to keep going. Ball 1: Margarita was good. Ok, maybe the food is going to be great. Right? WRONG! Strike 4: Gravy on Enchiladas, I am thinking red sauce. Ok that should be good. NO! It is real gravy like Thanksgiving Style. I kid you not. It was grey in color and seemed to have some lumps. Strike 5: No Onions! Really you make Mexican food with no onions? Even Taco Bell has onions and something that they pass as pico de gallo. Strike 6: Bland food. Ok I decided to get past the Turkey gravy on my burritos that didn't have any onions and try it. Seriously Taco Bell has more flavor, oh and they use something that at least tastes like cheese in theirs. After 6 Strikes, I have decided this restaurant is forever out. Go to this place at your own risk. I don't understand all the past reviews. This place is horrible. AVOID!
(1)Jennifer E.
I expected some hole in the wall place, this place was really nice on the inside, (totally remodeled) I suggest the house taco's they are fluffy and wonderful. The queso is excellent.
(4)C R.
This place is old school, family owned authentic mexican. If you are looking for tex-mex or something even remotely resembling taco bell, you're barking up the wrong (Mexican) tree. Margaritas are to die for, although be careful, the potency could mean you're also splurging on a cab ride home. Get a pitcher. Get a mixed basket of chips with cheese and mix the hot sauce on the table in the cheese sauce. Do NOT leave here without a beef soft shell taco. It's their specialty and I've been eating here for YEARS and have tried nothing else. Food is 5 stars, but the family-owned restrictions loose one star for convenience. Cash only, no credit cards, no reservations, not always open. Although when their new patio is open, they may get that last star from me!
(4)Todd V.
Great place to eat! Been there many times before, but tonight was a surprise. The entire atmosphere has been remodeled along with a patio addition. Nice change and good food!,,
(4)HEDY K.
we have been eating there alon time, now it has been restored and inside is beautiful! love the food, the pico is the best. we love the puffy tacos, yummy, rice is great!!!!you know all the food is homemade fantastic!!!!
(4)Jacquelou W.
I love Maria's. I've been coming here since I was little as most of my extended family lives out this way. I've hardly strayed from the soft shell tacos which are to die for. They are "famous" according to the menu and I agree because I've never had one so damn good. They are indescribable. I don't know if I would call this tex-mex. Maybe because I don't really know what that is. Super friendly service, and comfortable atmosphere. I would travel to Nebraska just to go here, no joke.
(5)Josh S.
I normally don't waste my time re-iterating how much a place sucks, but Maria's is such a pitiful joke that I must do this. Again, the only reason I walked in here one more time is because I work nearby. Forget the indescribable disappointments such as cash-only, bitchy service, and weak $9 drinks, let's focus on the fact that NONE of the food here tastes good! I would take the Wednesday special from Junior High School for $1.29 instead of this slop any day. Seriously! My dog refused it, what else needs to be said. The meat they use is like the stuff I throw away; bland, flavorless, cooked so long it tastes like mashed nothing. And the regular staples like rice, refried beans, queso, salsa are straight out of the cheapest jar/can they can find. Despite all these shameful disgraces, the prices still somehow remain sky high! The biggest issue I have with this restaurant are the patrons. I want to beat the piss out of every regular in the place for being so incompetent and supporting a restaurant that makes such terrible food! A full parking lot brings in new customers like me, and I know every new customer will be disappointed because they don't have an age-old ridiculous tradition they feel obligated to uphold. Get real! Tradition blows - learn how to cook decent food and tradition will create itself. I hope this places closes down soon so that someone who actually knows how to roll a tamale can have a chance at my business.
(1)Steve K.
This place is close to my job so I get take out from them occassionally. The place is always busy when I go there so if you are dining in you may have to wait for a table. There is always a hostess at the door and the bartenders have been professional and attentive, even while being very busy, when I pickup my order from them. Mostly they get the four stars based on food quality. Everything I have eaten there tastes like it is made from scratch. I always get the feeling that I am eating a quality meal that somebody spent some time cooking. For those of you that like your Mexican spicy, this isn't the place. My one complaint would be that they could make things a little bit spicier, but I always feel like I ate a home cooked meal when getting food from them.
(4)Lori R.
I've only eaten here twice in the 20 years I've lived in Omaha (mostly because it is so far from my home) but I have to say, don't believe the naysayers. I greatly enjoyed my food both times I was there. I do have to say, that it is a family-owned restaurant and that far too many people go there thinking they will get the same thing as Taco Bell, or like Julio's in its day, but I am here to tell you, Maria's probably comes closer to "traditional" Mexican food than other restaurants because "traditionally", Mexican food is not "blow-your-socks-off" spicy. And they do use gravy instead of sour cream and things. Hence the sour cream in little packets...their nod to the fact that the uneducated will want sour cream to slather all over the food. I like sour cream as much as the next person BUT I have never needed it at Maria's. It's just that much of a difference in food. In fact, maybe the hub and I will need to get down to Ralston in the near future. You usally can't get near the place on a weekend.
(4)M L.
Plenty of food, good service but it didn't taste like Mexican food. Do Omahans like bland?
(3)David G.
Good food and good people, but do not go there anticipating traditional Mexican food.
(3)B B.
The first table we were seated at was dirty. Although it looked clean, there was a lot of food crusted on the table surface. I started to scrape it off with a fork but decided to sit at another table. The second table had the same problem although not as bad. The food wasn't too bad. BUT, for a place that is supposed to be "authentic Mexican"...it left a LOT to be desired. While some of the staff may have been hispanic, it was hardly (in my opinion) authentic. If you are looking for a carne asada burrito or anything carne asada, don't go here. About the only burrito I saw on the menu was bean and cheese. For an appetizer we ordered their chips and salsa. The chips were great, the salsa wasn't bad either; I recommend them. I ordered tacos and a burrito (hard shell and soft shell). The tacos were good but appeared to be made with ground beef. the soft shell were unique and good. The hard shell tasted like the shells were off the shelf and stale. Oh well, the tacos were only $2.00 a piece. I recommend the soft shell. We also ordered an enchilada. Boy was that a disappointment!!! I had to take a picture of it. the thing was just centimeters larger than my fork (in width) and about the same length as my fork, pathetic. As far as how high the thing sat on my plate... well, let's just say that if you placed it next to a pancake, it would have taken 2 of these enchiladas to even compare in height. Do not get the enchiladas; you will be disappointed (in my opinion). Our server was Tracy, she was extremely helpful, and always there when we needed her. Oh, one more thing. you better bring CASH or dust off your CHECK BOOK because they DO NOT accept anything else. Overall, the food was good. I'd go back.
(2)Kevin B.
I've been going here since I was a kid. It will always be my favorite mexican place because the food is so good. Normally I'm not a huge mexican food fan. If that's you. This is your place.
(5)Jane B.
The food was awesome! I had a fish taco and chicken taco. Both were very, very good. The shells are puffy and didn't fall apart while eating them. Also had a frozen margarita which had I not been driving, would have drank a few more! The special tonight was a two - $6.99. A choice of tacos, and several other options and it came with rice. Very good deal and I left stuffed and didn't eat it all!! So to those who have given this place a poor review, you must have been on drugs the time you went. I will be going back to Maria's! Oh, and the wait staff is super!
(4)Patrick W.
I love Mexican food so when a friend said this place was her favorite, I couldn't wait to try it. I ordered a taco and an enchilada. The first couple of bites, I remember thinking this is pretty good. It was hot and cheesy. By the end of the meal, I remember thinking this was the possibly the worst meal I've ever had. Maybe it was an off night but I won't go back to find out. I felt like there was a rock sitting in the bottom of my stomach. The food was greasy and just not good beyond the first few bites. The atmosphere left a lot to be desired but I could get over that if the food were better.
(1)Colin S.
Being a Papillion native, this is my favorite local spot to get Mexican food. The food here is a lot like Cali Taco but not quite as good. The tacos are pretty good, but I usually get the #9. Two burritos smothered in Maria's special gravy, it is so delicious, I highly recommend it. I also always get a side of flour chips with salsa to start things off. they taste the same as Cali Taco's chips.
(4)Reed N.
This place is for real. My first visit was Friday for a business lunch. Among the first things you notice are the warnings. No separate checks, Cash only - no credit cards. Only open for lunch on Friday. Only open for dinner on Friday and Saturday. Damn... tough to do business with this joint?! Well, my hosts told me it has been around a LONG time. IF you are that restricted in your business terms and still around after all those years, the food must ROCK! It does. Come here... eat the Maria's plate to start. "Puffy"taco, tostada, a burrito with some dreamy sauce, and an enchilada. No goofy beans and rice business here. I'll be back to try the Chili Rellenos... they take 30 mn per the menu... and that is probably a good omen. And the little "Puffy" tacos are totally heaven. Not greasy in any way. Not overdressed. Cheeses slightly melted. OMG. Things this good will get popularized, and Bobby Flay just did a throwdown with Arturo's on these things not long ago. It's just a matter of time before our bellies will be full of these from any number of places [or the frozen food aisle]. The service is good here. They do not give chips. Don't complain. You don't need them. After the food you will be thankful you did not waste digestive space on freakin' chips!
(5)Zachary Sam Z.
My family would always eat with a friend's family once a week, and if we were craving Tex-Mex, Maria's is where we would go. It's hidden away in Ralston, and nobody in my family knew about it until we started going there with the other family. But wow, is it good. Best tex mex I've had in Omaha.
