Ate here for the first time today at lunch. Service was terrific, food came out fast and tasted great. The fish was fresh and our sushi was well-presented. Bonus points for the sleek decor. We'll be back.

Place wasn't busy when we arrived and all seemed well. Waiter stopped by and we asked a couple of questions about the menu; do you have a daikon roll and can we get a custom roll. He didnt know but promised to find out and return. We ordered a drink and a couple small rolls in the meantime. Our drinks were prompt. 45 minutes later no food had arrived and we had no answers to our questions. The place was getting busy and our waiter never returned. We left money on the table for our drinks and walked out. Horrible, terrible, no good service.

Well Sarah G. you got your wish. Great happy hour specials can now be added to the great service and food quality. If you want to have a quality sushi experience Ponzu is you place. I have visited this restaurant over 20 times before writing this review, so I assure your satisfaction. I can go into detail about my preferred dishes, yet I'd much rather just say that you can not go wrong for lunch, dinner, or happy hour!

I can't say enough positive things about Ponzu. Indeed this place has become a Wednesday after work tradition for me. From the moment I walk in until I leave the staff are friendly, efficient and attentive. The staff remember names, remember your likes and genuinely seem to enjoy the patrons. Welcome to Omaha's version of Cheers...with sushi! I've tried most of the menu items - the vast majority are great - quite pleasing to the palate for sure. Understandably not everything was a home run for me but I didn't expect that either. The management team, particularly Lauren, is always ready to receive constructive criticism and really take comments to heart. As one who is not a native Omaha guy or even a Nebraskan, I love that I have a place I feel comfortable sitting at the bar and relaxing after a long day. Combine great food and excellent company and you have Ponzu!

Good sushi. Great happy hour. I haven't had a roll I didn't like, but it's not the best sushi in town. Their version of Godzilla roll was not my favorite. Upscale atmosphere and has a great patio for people watching the night go by at Aksarben village. Happy hour wine selection is nice!

Ponzu is always our favorite date night spot! Love the calamari as an app and we always try to venture out with new different sushi rolls (with the help and suggestions of the waitstaff). Never have been disappointed with service, food, or prices. We don't go out much so when we do we go where we know we will be impressed every time! My boyfriend gets a Sapporo almost always, and I like to try different martinis, my favorite, the Berry Bellini. Will continue to go back over any other sushi joint in town time and time again!
(5)Valentina S.
Our favorite Sushi restaurant in town. There is a lot of talent in that kitchen. I love the Salmon Carpaccio and the truffle french fries.

This is the best accidental find ever. We were leaving beerfest and wanted food to help wash down the beer, basically drive safer. We saw this place on our yelp app and said Sushi sounds good. When we walked in it seemed kind like a cross between a diner and a sushi place. So I was a little scared but no one in my party wanted to drive until we leveled out a little. So we sat down and looked at the menu. The first thing that jumped off the page was the grouper. I don't know if it was me wanting fish and chips or what but I ordered it. When it arrived I was shocked by the amount of food. And then began to worry about the quality of it. I took a bite and felt like I was at an ocean café where they were serving fresh fish. The taste and quality was definitely there. The rest of my party ordered a variety of sushi all of which was highly praised but all of it was also more unique then the normal ones you find at most places. I would recommend this place if you are in the area and looking for a surprising taste.

I come here for a pretty good Cuban Sandwich!! I come to Ponzu Sushi & Grill for a good Cuban Sandwich! And for their truffle fries that come with it. My Special Lady Wife likes to eat at my truffle fries at Ponzue Sushi & Grill. She does enjoy their Hot Mess roll but...I come to PONZU FRAKKING SUSHI AND & GRILL for a pretty good Cuban Sandwich!!!! GET IT???? Yes, Ponzu does serve up some pretty good rolls but only a few stand apart as something I would get instead of my pretty good Cuban Sandwich. Thankfully My Special Lady Wife can find enough decent rolls to satiate her appetite between picking at my pretty good Cuban Sandwich or truffle fries. Look, I'm not saying they have bad sushi. You will not read that in this review. It's just they are...ok. They don't try to wrestle my pretty good Cuban Sandwich off my plate using my truffle fries as a spear, in an attempt to force me to eat their sushi ok-ness instead of a pretty good Cuban Sandwich and truffle fries. The appetizers I can get before I order my pretty good Cuban Sandwich are also, just ok. The Ceviche I once got, before ordering my pretty good Cuban Sandwich wasn't the best ceviche I every had before I ordered a pretty good Cuban Sandwich but it didn't seem the freshest but it wasn't overly chewy so it was average and just a time filler till I got my (already ordered when I order my appetizer) pretty good Cuban Sandwich. Now the dessert I sometimes get after I have my pretty good Cuban Sandwich...and truffle fries...is actually pretty good. They make a mean coconut bread pudding and if I didn't load up on an average ceviche before I had my pretty good Cuban Sandwich, I usually have this awesome finisher after finishing my pretty good Cuban Sandwich. Its moist and melts in your mouth...just like the bread pudding they make for that thing I have after a meal consisting of a pretty good Cuban Sandwich and truffle fries. So pretty good Cuban Sandwich and truffle fries, notwithstanding, Ponzu is ok and they have decent offerings and a pretty good Cuban Sandwich. Eat up Minions!!

The first time I had their food I was not impressed. I went back a few months ago and really enjoyed it. The hot mess is a delicious spicy mess. It is one of my favorites. The kamikaze shrimp are so good. The margaritas aren't bad either. Service has been pretty good. One time the messed up our order but quickly made it right. It's my new go to sushi place in Omaha.
(4)Mike W.
For my money, the best sushi place in Omaha. It has a much more enjoyable casual atmosphere than certain larger sushi places in town and I never have an issue with any of the rolls I get. The sliders they have are always a must for my wife and I. They provide a simple but adequate beverage menu and a comfortable inside or outside seating. Though DJ's Dugout has taken a bit off the enjoyment of sitting outside. A much needed place in the Aksarben area and one that I am happy to continue to visit. Great happy hour too!
(4)Brian B.
Great staff and great place to eat the chicken lettuce wraps are amazing. I think ponzu gets overlooked since DJs set up shop right in front of them. But if your in aksarben this is a great place to eat with a lot of other things than sushi
(4)Kari S.
The food is fantastic! Super fresh sashimi, and their lunch prices are a great deal. Curtis was our waiter and he was very fun and helpful. We both got the lunch sashimi combo and one roll and then split the rolls between us. The California crunch roll was a fun spin on the original with sweet chili and crunchy crumbs on the outside. The sake (salmon) roll was a solid standard. The sashimi was two good sized pieces each of salmon, tuna, and yellowtail. Four thumbs up from me and my mom.
(5)Eva G.
Loved it! Great way to end my visit here to Omaha. Riley was my server/bartender....she is a sweetheart. Very professional...knowledgeable....attentive...Âfriendly...and just awesome personality! Thanks Omaha...Aksarben!
(5)Julia R.
We were the only people there for lunch on a weekend... strange. Although we had a coupon, the chef's choice (omakase) sashimi was waaay expensive for the amount you got. The cuts were small, and the variation was not impressive. I've had better experiences here in the past, but now I know not to waste my money on that.
(3)Chessie M.
The atmosphere was fun at the bar on a recent Friday night around 8:00. The staff was hustling to fill orders. The bartender was in serious need of a bar back as the dirty glasses were spilling out around the counter. We order beers from a small but good selection. For dinner my son ordered 3 sushi rolls and loved them. I ordered the fried grouper and fries. The fish and chips were both overcooked and the cole slaw was not dressed and I had to ask for dressing. For $15 it was not worth it. Half my fries were too crispy/burnt to eat and I am a fries aficionado! Total bill was $60 for two. I thought it was a bit pricey for what we got.

I thought long and hard about whether this was a two or three star review. If I had not ordered sushi it would definitely be one or two stars but the sushi was the saving grace. We started with an array of appetizers. We ordered the crab cake sliders, baked lobster dip, asian pork sliders and edamame. This was the biggest disappointment of the meal. The crab cakes were almost all cake and hardly any crab, the lobster dip tasted like krab salad from the deli warmed up - and you had to beg for enough bread to eat it, the asian pork sliders were dry as the desert - and they came with no pickled cucumber and the aioli was smaller than the size of a dime. The salads and the lone entree were not much better. We ordered the Ponzu House salad and the Asian Pear salad. The house salad was fair but nothing great and the pear salad was lackluster with stem still on the pears and a dressing that had no flavor. The one person who ordered an entree chose teriyaki chicken, it was a pitiful looking plate when it arrived basically comprised of a small chicken breast (barely warm) cut in half with a drizzle of teriyaki. The sushi was the only thing that saved this whole meal. It was actually very good. We tried about 6 or 7 different rolls and they all tasted very good and seemed extremely fresh. The Hot Mess, avocado and Aksarben were the highlights. As far as people complaining about Ponzu "stealing" ideas from Blue I must disagree. Yes they have some similar rolls but so does everybody else. They have many unique ideas and the atmosphere and serving style have no similarities. The service was fair. As I said we had to beg for bread (and even then we were brought one piece per person), our sushi order was not entered correctly (two missing items) and my gf's sprite was refilled with water twice, etc
(3)Sarah G.
I was pretty pleased with Ponzu, though the take-home feeling I had was that I hope they crank out a happy hour deal, because their prices wouldn't warrant my choosing this over other local sushi spots that I can get at half-off or dropping nearly $90 for a two-person dinner. That money would definitely be better spent elsewhere. Complaining about cost aside, I really enjoyed our dinner at Ponzu. Though it was complimented with a glass of Goose Island Matilda plus a big bottle of Sapporo... so... keep that in mind also... We started with the Asian Pork Sliders, but I actually liked the crispy/dry texture of the pork (they're obviously not going for a BBQ texture here) and ours were adequately sauced. I probably could have eaten both and called it a wrap, but the meal went on from there to include four sushi rolls as well. Unfortunately I can't remember the names of what we ordered, but I thought it was all quite good. Finally, our server was friendly and attentive, but he seemed a little flustered... though that could have been due to the table of guys in the corner who were pounding sake bombs and standing up on their chairs at 7pm while they got progressively louder and louder... that was just weird. All in all, I wouldn't rank Ponzu among my favorite restaurants, but it was a tasty and convenient place to grab some sushi in the midtown area.

The food here was excellent! We went during the World Cup and most places showing the game were packed, so we just went here by chance since we were in the area and they were showing the game. Looking at the menu, I wasn't sure what to expect exactly because the items seemed to be all over the place (choices ranged from sushi and Asian food to tacos, enchiladas, and pasta). The sushi prices seemed high to me, but I was visiting from another state. I had the sesame seared salmon with mandarin glaze on the side, sticky rice, and edamame puree. It was delicious! I'm not sure that I can even express in words how good it was. Besides it tasting wonderful, I loved the mix of textures in my meal. The sesame seeds and sear were nice and crispy on my fish, the rice was sticky, but not mushy, and the puree was creamy and smooth. Writing about it is making my mouth water. My husband had the chicken teriyaki with asparagus and coconut rice. I only managed to try his asparagus, but it was cooked perfectly and he enjoyed everything else. For dessert we ordered the cookie dough rangoon and chocolate cake with green tea ice cream and salted caramel. Both were good, but I liked the cake better. The only thing was that I expected the ice cream to be served on the side, but instead it was sort of mixed into the cake. It wasn't a solid layer of ice cream though, like a normal ice cream cake, so the whole cake was a little more frozen than what I thought it would be like. It was still good though. There were only two downsides to our dining experience: the green tea and the waitress. We kind of expected to get a small pot of tea with two little cups like most places serve. Nope, it was just a little pot of water, a large coffee mug, and a sealed package of Bigelow green tea, and the waitress didn't bring it out until halfway through our meal. That part of it felt like we were in a diner. The other thing was the waitress herself. My husband had finished eating and I was still actively working on my meal. With food in my mouth and my fork in hand, she asked if I was done and needed a box and then put the check down on the table without asking if we wanted anything else. We did, we wanted dessert! It seemed very rude to us to give us the check in the middle of eating. We had to flag down our waitress to ask her for a menu for dessert and she asked if we wanted to order it to go! It felt like we were unwelcomed there. My husband asked her about it and her excuse was that people like to eat quickly during their lunch break. We were dressed somewhat casually and asked to be seated where we could watch the soccer match, so we obviously weren't in a rush. The food was great and even though the waitress wasn't, I feel like I can't hold that against the place and hope she was just having an off day. If in Omaha again, I would go back, but I hope we get better service.

I like that Ponzu Sushi is right next to the Aksarben theater and the design is very clean and chic. They also have a yummy Asian Pork Slider ($5 on happy hour) that I wish I can have again right now as I type this. Ponzu serves the Aksarben roll which is the required corn fed beef sushi roll. My only sadness is that it is simply not as delicious as Hiro's beef sushi roll.

We went here for a date night a week ago on a Friday night. It took FOREVER to get our food, and they got our order wrong. We realized when we left that we paid for something that we never received. The food was actually good, and the waitress was nice and smiled a lot, but we left annoyed.

I've dined at Ponzu twice now...enjoyed it both times. The atmosphere is modern and comfortable, and the restaurant is very clean. The first time there we had the fried pork pot stickers for an appetizer. They were nothing special, but very good. For my meal I chose a small plate...the Crispy Pork Sliders. They were fantastic...loved the flavors and the pretzel bun was a definite plus! I also had a side salad with Wasabi Ranch dressing. The salad itself was great...had edamame, tomatoes and carrots in it. The dressing was great...Ranch with a kick!! My dining partner had the Teriyaki Chicken. We were expecting strips of chicken, but it was actually a chicken breast. Regardless it was very good. On my second visit I ordered the Pork Belly Sliders and they too were terrific. Of course I once again ordered the side salad with Wasabi Ranch Dressing! Others in my dining group had an assortment of sushi and they all thought it was fantastic. On both visits I had their Stormy Ginger drink which has rum, ginger beer, lime juice and fresh ginger in it. I highly recommend...it's a must try! The only negative thing I can say about my visits is that on my second visit they ran out of Ginger Beer, so they were only able to make one drink. I thought that was odd since 3 of their 8 specialty cocktails have Ginger Beer in them. The bartender said someone had left to get some, and in the hour we were there they still weren't back with it! I could have walked to Wohlner's grocery store and returned with Ginger beer within 10 minutes. All in all Ponzu is definitely worth trying out. Aksarben Village keeps expanding and it's fun just to walk around and see what's new and many times they have events going on.

Great place with even better food. Fantastic place to hit before a movie.

Well, maybe THAT'S why everyone said it was overpriced. After the first tasty meal I had here, my second trip to Ponzu was just plain disappointing. Right off the bat, we had to wait about 15 minutes to order anything. Now, I know 15 minutes may not be the most abominable amount of time a person has ever sat unattended at a restaurant, but when you're surrounded by a dozen empty tables and watching your server make multiple trips to each of the two other groups that have already ordered before so much as asking what you'd like to drink, 15 minutes seems like an eternity. But "oh well," I figured, "sometimes people make mistakes, and the food here will be worth the wait." Oh, how wrong I was. The service improved once our initial timeout in the corner was over, and my 8 dollar cocktail was stiff and delicious (like I like my men, amirite? I hate myself for that joke.) Unfortunately, the food then proceeded to look up at the pretty high bar set by our first visit and then walk calmly under it. The sushi wasn't bad, but it wasn't really good either. The salmon skin was too hard and chewy this time around, the sweet chili sauce was all sweet and no chili, and the lettuce wraps were probably my least favorite in the city. The desert we ordered reinforced the opinion I had developed: I wish I hadn't done that. I wasn't necessarily mad about wasting money on the "Pina Colada Roll," since it was only 6 bucks. I was more mad about the fact that I now had a bunch more calories on my ledger that really left me unsatisfied. Just based on this visit, I'd consider 2 stars for Ponzu. However, the first trip was really great, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. It'll be a while until I go back, though. But hey, at least my drink was good.
(3)David J.
This is probably closer to a 2.5 stars. Both good and bad in my one visit. Prices are a little high but I'm hoping they are still perfecting some things. Sushi is good, but nothing any better than Hiro or Blue. We got a spicy tuna roll which was good, a crazy crab (or something like that) and it was also good. I noticed that almost every roll has scallions - so beware if you don't like them. For the bad, the endamame was SO salty and not served very hot. Also my miso soup was barely warm and FULL of scallions. Taste was good, but again would be better served hot. My fiancé liked her martini with the blue cheese stuffed olives (which appears they make at the bar). I ordered a beer but will try saki next time. We had a Groupon and it was still 50 bucks, so it's not super cheap. I still think Hiro is better.

Great sushi lunch!!!

After my first visit, I'd say I definitely enjoyed Ponzu and would be intrigued to return. I've had a lot of sushi rolls in my day, and those that I tried from Ponzu seemed to match up pretty well with any I've had in Omaha (though I wouldn't call Omaha's sushi the best I've had). The cocktails, on the other hand, were astoundingly good, on par with any craft cocktail bar I've been to. The service we received and the atmosphere in the restaurant were also both very good; I just couldn't bring myself to add that fifth star because, while I enjoyed everything (especially the Old Fashioned), I can't quite say I was impressed by the sushi rolls. However, we had only a fairly narrow sampling of the menu, and I do hope to return to try more soon and hopefully discover something I like even more.
(4)Michelle M.
I would have given 5 stars but the service was lacking. The person which seated us was not friendly at all! Food was great. Server was okay.
(4)Rose P.
I was very happy with the service at Ponzu! The rolls were delicious as well, we ordered seven different ones and all of them were delicious! I really enjoyed the Crazy Crab, Flamethrower, Maui Wowie and the Godzilla! I will definitely be going back!!!

A few friends and I decided to give Ponzu a try before catching a movie one Thursday evening. The Venue: Ponzu is located (or now I guess I should say completely OBSCURED) between some soon-to-be sports bar and the Aksarben theaters. I do like the Aksarben village area as there's a little bit of everything for anyone so it least it has that going for it. Once inside you'll see that you're basically sitting in a huge square glass fishbowl, the lighting is reminiscent of some kind of medical examination room and the tables/seats remind me of cheap IKEA throwaways :( When I mentioned the lighting and cheap patio furniture as a joke three other guests said they were thinking the same thing heh... The Service: The service was alright but on two seperate occasions our drinks went dry and we had to flag a waitress down to get that remedied. They weren't particularly busy so I'm not sure what the deal was? Overall, the service wasn't bad but I've definitely had better. The Food: I ordered four different sushi rolls (including their Aksarben roll), a cup of Miso soup, and a few beers. The Miso arrived and was tepid at best though pretty tasty, the rolls were at best average and the worst was pretty weak. The drinks were cold and when you could get the waitress' attention they would come promptly thereafter. The Cost: Pricing was pretty fair I guess, I would expect to pay similar prices at any place in the area so you're definitely not going to break the bank here, but I wouldn't say that it was worth it as the food was only mediocre at best. The Bottom Line: I probably won't be coming back here anytime soon, it's better than supermarket sushi but the weird lighting, terrible furniture, sub-par food, and mediocre service have put me off a bit. Protip: If you absolutely must dine here be sure to grab a booth as they're much nicer than the crappy floor seating!!!

So been there twice now. The first time was great and promtped a return trip. The second time-not so great. First trip. we ordered sushi (alaska roll, cali crab roll, and a shrimp tempura roll). All were excellent. Just the right combinations of meat, veggies, rice, and sauce. Also, the service was great-just the right amount of attentiveness needed. Second trip. Reordered the same sushi plus a poke roll. None were prepared quite as well as before. We also ordered the prok lettuce wraps. The pork was tasty but there weren't enough lettuce leaves to go around and the accompaning sauce was terrible (was too bitter in my mind). Also, our waitress was inconsistent. After waiting almost 15 min for her to come around. Then after we got our waters and were ready to order she was no where to be found. But at the end of the meal it was like she was there every 2 minutes. Its not a bad restaurant but I am not sure if I will be returning any time soon. There are so many other places in Omaha to try. The only caveat is that it is only minutes from my house.
(2)Erin R.
I've been to Ponzu a bunch of times now and I'm a fan. It isn't the best sushi in Omaha, but it is very good. I've only ever had sushi and appetizers so I can't comment on the rest of their menu. Location is very convenient so my husband and I stop in here a lot. The sushi is good and service is very fast. Prices seem pretty much the same as other local sushi spots with some happy hour deals. I'm not sure if they have a reverse happy hour though. Edamame, truffle fries, and other apps are all pretty good (the portion size on the fries is HUGE). My favorite is the crunchy cali roll. I would rank Ponzu very high and almost on the same level as Blue and Hiro. I will definitely return to Ponzu.
(4)Sierra B.
Ponzu is on par with Blue Sushi and is the only place in Omaha I have found a great fresh sushi selection. They also have a great variety of cooked entrees so you can bring your non sushi loving friends and family and they will have options to choose from. I go here often but went recently for valentines and they had a great menu especially designed for the day and all 6 items sounded good so we ordered them and were not disappointed! I have gotten food to-go from here as well and they always put the sauce on the side so the sushi rice doesn't get soggy and they always include plenty of wasabi and pickled ginger (served separately which I love!) They also have a good lunch special similar to the one offered at Blue Sushi. This place is a must try and is perfect for dates or girls night outs because it is right next to the movie theater, a few bars, and Jones cupcakes!
(4)Mark M.
This place SUCKS! The sushi is bad, and the pieces of nigiri are so pathetically small it's ridiculous. TOTALLY OVERPRICED!! I go to all-you-can-eat and $1 nigiri sushi restaurants in many cities throughout this region, and they ALL serve better and much larger pieces of fish. I could've gone to a local grocery store and gotten better sushi than this, at a much more reasonable price. Big mistake deciding to try this place...I will NEVER eat here again!
(2)Benji B.
Pros: Beautiful decor. Location. Cons: Overpriced. Mediocre food. I saw people eating French fries (hello Nebraska). The bottom line is this doesn't compare to places like Okinawa, Hiro, and Blue.
(2)Michael W.
I've been looking forward to this place opening since I heard the owner of Jimi D's was opening a sushi place. This week it has opened and it does not disappoint. Stopped by with a friend and we began with two dirty vodka martini's. They were excellent, with just the right amount of 'dirty' in them. Followed that up with the edamame appetizer. This was good. I have never gotten edamame that was steaming hot when it arrived at the table before, but it was still very tasty once it cooled slightly. Followed that up with 4 different sushi rolls. While I didn't make note of the names of what I ordered, they all tasted great. I believe one was called Crunchy Crab.. if you're a fan of the Crunchy Blue from Blue, you'll like this very much. One of the rolls we ordered had beef in it. I thought it was ok, just not what I usually think of when I crave sushi. I'd remember the other two if I saw the menu, and wouldn't hesitate to order them again. The service was good, though I suspect it will be even better with a bit more time. Prices seemed slightly high, but sometimes you have to pay a bit to get a quality meal. There was no official grand opening, just more of a word of mouth opening.. and the place was fairly crowded already. I will be visiting again soon!
(4)Amy F.
the hot mess roll is awesomesauce! yum.
(3)Eric And Jennifer R.
I love everything I tried here...edamame, mussels, pork belly, sushi, fish.... They only got 4 stars because the service is not consistently great.
(4)Ken W.
I sat at the sushi bar and was well cared for by the sushi chef and the waitstaff. The sushi was fresh and well prepared, with artistic touches. I ordered several pieces of nigiri-sushi, all good. Even the octopus was tender. The miso soup was good, but blander than I prefer. There was a generous amount of tofu, seaweed, and mushrooms in the soup. I could not resist trying the Aksarben Roll, with seared beef tenderloin, and was glad I did. The beef was rare, warm, and tender, served in a roll with a sauce that enhanced the beef's flavor. I will definitely return to explore the menu further. The appetizers and entrees appear to be an appealing and innovative take on Japanese cuisine.
(4)Wendy C.
Cucumber Ginger martini is delish. The edamame is a little sketch.
(4)Lauren O.
We absolutely love Ponzu. We always sit in the bar because the bartender is extremely personable and attentive. The decor is very simple and modern and they seem to always have great music playing in the background. It's a perfect spot for us because my fiancee doesn't care for sushi, yet I do. They have a great non-sushi menu as well, so it's the best of both worlds. Amazing truffle fries and killer Kobe beef burger. There is a fried cheesecake wonton dessert that I believe they are adding to the menu shortly. We can't wait for the nice weather to kick in so that we can try out the patio. Looks like they have a great Happy Hour menu, but we've never made it in time to check it out.
(5)Eduardo V.
From the minimalistic decor with muted colors to the friendly young atmosphere I think the place looks inviting. the glass walls provide an open feeling. Well I have been there twice with some good results and some not so much. The rolls and the sashimi have been quite good. the options are good and they were yummy. I also had a tast of the fish tacos and those were a little bit on the simple side. My dinner date complained of the shell but i think the actual fish and the dressing where low on spice or flavor. I gave it four starts because each time the service has been exceptional, the company has been great and the ambiance helps . It is not cheap but i think the location cant be beat. . I think they have some growing pains but I hope they continue to improve.
(4)Stephanie K.
Great sushi! Definitely a new favorite. Different, clean, & inviting atmosphere. Good service. Tried the lobster Rangoon's, definitely worth it. Had 4 different rolls& each one was great. Highly recommend the aksarben roll! Will be back!
(5)Rachael L.
still a huge fan of the sushi, but be careful of the fried cheesecake, pretty sure it is fried in the same oil as the tempura fish....remove the batter and it is much better!
(4)Katie F.
Good sushi. Happy hour prices are excellent and so is the selection of happy hour rolls. Service was great.

Tried Ponzu with a coworker for a Friday late lunch. There was enough seating open that the place seemed busy, but not overcrowded. One of the people behind the sushi bar tried to greet us with the traditional Japanese, "Irrashaimase", but failed miserably. My coworker thought we had been told to "seat ourselves". If you can't say it properly, then a "hello" or "welcome" will do. ;-) The decor was clean and minimalist; it seemed like a nice atmosphere for an evening dinner. Even though there was a lot of stone/concrete, there were less issues with the noise than, say, at Mai Thai across the street. The wait to be seated was a little long; finally one of the people from behind the sushi bar seated us. Small table for four people to sit at. It was realistically only a two person table. We were seated by the sushi bar, in the middle of the room. The wait staff consisted of two people that day. For the whole floor. Our waitress was pleasant enough, but was sporadic with service. The other, well, let's just say I thought the constant viewing of her spangly orange bra (and we're not talking just a peek of strap, here) was very tacky. What managers let waitstaff get away with, appearance-wise lately, astounds me. (And I don't mean just at Ponzu; it seems to be a widespread trend.) I realize that the service should be first... but... anyway... When we finally got a chance to order, we decided to share a variety of appetizers, just to be expedient and sample things. This would have been a good time for the waitress to maybe interject; while the portions themselves were fine, the plates were extremely oversized for the servings. She also could have mentioned that the lettuce wraps were "wrap yourself" style (like fajitas)... and a very large portion. The few things we got to share, plate-wise, literally filled our table. It was very awkward to share/reach, and the waitress was not the speediest with removing the empty plates. That being said, the Edamame was very good; the black salt was an interesting touch. The Kamikaze Shrimp was very tasty. The Potstickers were good, but nothing unique about them. The Calamari was well done, but half went uneaten, simply because we prefer the rings, not the little tentacle bodies. ;-) The Wasabi Potato Egg Rolls were interesting; definitely a surprise. But, in the end, didn't knock me off my feet. The Lettuce Wraps, for $9.00, is a great deal. A ton of food, comparatively, and something that can be taken home and reheated later, if need be. I can't attest to how it tasted, since my coworker ended-up taking it home. Still; we were able to try quite a few of the appetizers for the same cost as an entree for each of us would have cost. Not bad. :-) I admit, some of the cocktails caught my eye, but had to wait. :-( I took the safer route, I admit, not trying the sushi. Well, time and coworker were the factors at play. If I ever return, it will be to try the cocktails and the sushi.

My girlfriend and I bought a groupon and we've been wanting to try it let's just say we will be back!!! Although some of the reviews were not to great don't let them turn you around about this place. The sushi is really good better than Okinawa and blue considering the happy hour menu has a lot to offer. The service was good even though it was on the weekend. Try it and you'll be satisfied. No complaints here...mmmm sushi

Went on a Saturday evening around 7pm. The place had a good number of people but there were plenty of seats available. Sat at the sushi bar. Ordered two orders of Nigiri (tuna and yellow tail) along with a firecracker sushi roll and a Kirin to wash it all down. Service was alright, I kind of had to flag down my waiter often which is always a slight pain. The nigiri was alright, however the fish was room temperature. The reason I point this out is because while living in japan I noticed the sashimi was slightly chilled or cold (not frozen) as to reduce the possibility of germs but here it felt as though the fish sat there all day. Aside from that the firecracker roll was good. The pricing for the rolls weren't bad, but slightly more expensive than normal for the nigiri.

Awesome sushi. Awesome presentation. Try the Aksarben Roll. Seems strange but such a pleasant Nebraska surprise! Crazy Crab Roll was my favorite! Rolls were tightly rolled - perfect! Very impressive, Jimi! Will definitely be back soon!

I heard Jimi was opening a sushi place and I couldn't wait. I went in with very high expectations and I was absolutely blown away. We ordered 4 different rolls. Spicy tuna, Mowie Wowie, Rainbow, and I cant remember the name of the last one. I have never had a wow moment with sushi in my life until last night. The service was impeccable and the food was amazing. However, that should come as no surprise to anyone who knows how he runs his restaurants. I am a regular at Jimi D's and now I will be a regular at Ponzu. You will be doing yourself a huge disservice if you do not check it out!
(5)Jane K.
The location and decor of the restaurant are excellent. I like to go there before a movie at Aksarben. The sushi is slightly above average and above average price. Still the best sushi I have had in Omaha has been Maru and it was quite a bit less expensive.

Jimi D's lured me in with their delicious food and turned me into a regular. I had high expectations hearing Ponzu was owned by the same dude. I was not disappointed. I ordered a carrot ginger martini that was perfect. Other highlights were the wasabi potato eggrolls and fried cheesecake. I was slightly disappointed by the mahi. It wasn't bad. I was just hoping it'd have a little more flavor. I think if I were craving fish again, I'd order the amazing pecan glazed salmon at Jimi D's.

Me and friend ate here in July. It's great to have all these new restaurants in Aksarben. The decor was nice and cool looking. The cocktail menu was fun -- I had three different Martini's. My favorite was the Cucumber Ginger. It was delicious. We ordered two appetizers, the shrimp something, which was pretty much like the bang bang shrimp at Bonefish grill. It was very good. We also got the Tempura Vegetables, and here is where the problem started. After consuming about half of them, I bit into the Sweet Potato Tempura and there was a huge black hair that was fried into the tempura batter. It was so disgusting! I immediately notified the waitress and she came and picked up the rest of the tempura, apologized and took that off our bill. She didn't seem too concerned about it. After the appys, we ordered four different specialty rolls. They were all good. Not great, just good. The total bill for four cocktails, 1 appetizer, and 4 specialty sushi rolls was around $100.00. it seemed pretty overpriced for the quality of the food. If I spend $100 at a Sushi restaurant for two people, I want to be wowed, and I wasn't. And because of the hair in the tempura batter, I won't return.

a little expensive but if you are willing to pay its worth going to. nice selection of sushi and other menu dishes. i had the kobe burger and i was very satisfied with my choice.

Love love love Sitting outside Great reverse happy hour Perfect waitress love sliders and coco loco and just about anything on happy hour menu

Great meal! Genuinely surprised. Service started a tad rocky but my waitress was great and very nice. Didn't rush me at all and was fine being on my timeline as I wanted to linger and enjoy. App: Mussels with coconut curry sauce: salt level 8 - loads of flavor, loved the onion, red pepper, and cilantro. Points for olive oil bread and presentation. Very few closed/bad shells. Very salty though so not for the salt intolerant (me lol) Salad: Carrot ginger salad- fresh and tasty - loved the dressing with carrot purée in it Entree: Sesame crusted salmon, sticky rice, and slaw- a ten on flavor. Fresh, great great flavor and perfect combos in fresh slaw with cilantro. The edamame purée was top notch and on point. Nice outside patio and lighting. Overall very happy with the experience! Leaving to the hotel in a great mood :)

I am a little choosy when it comes to sushi places. Il begin with that.. Ever since the explosion of terrifying sushi risk articles splattered all over Facebook, I have held back when people have asked me if sushi sounds good for dinner. With that being said, I am a movie person and naturally I couldn't help but notice this cute lit up glass restaurant every time I visited Aksarben Cinema. Curiosity kind of took over me .. I wondered if this cozy but upscale looking restaurant was any good. One night after celebrating the victory of purchasing my mom a new car, my boyfriend and I decided to give this place a try. Five stars. Why? Because there's absolutely nothing to complain about here and we had a ton of fun. Strong tasty cocktails worth the price? Check. Two drinks were enough to make me feel good. Tasty appetizers? You got it. Try the ceviche or blue point mussels with crusty bread you can soak in a curry cream broth. Sushi better than Blue? Check. Good service? Check. Beautiful atmosphere? Yes. Our server was a blond outgoing friendly gal who attentively waited on us. She was warm and friendly and QUICK. We didn't wait hours for sushi like you do at some other places. Sitting on the patio for a warm pleasant summer night.. Perfect night and money well spent. Yes they don't offer a happy hour, but I'm not a cheap person obsessed with money. If you have good quality service, you deserve what I pay you. We will be back!

Let me start by saying they were very accommodating to an in-on-off-the-street large party of 8. We had finished Jurassic World and wanted to hang out a little longer. The staff made us feel it was no problem to put a couple of tables together and to do separate checks. Service was a little slow but the food was okay. So far they are the only place in Omaha I have found cold soba noddles. I wasn't overly thrilled but the company was great. I would go back only if I was invited. It wouldn't be my first choice.

It is good. The service is faster then blue sushi. The outside seating is wonderful. More expensive then blue though.

Am I the odd one out who was not impressed by Ponzu Sushi and Grill? Decided to grab a grub here because Yelp has been very good with the suggestions on where to go, what to do, and where to eat during our trip. This one, eh, was a fail for us. The attire is casual but it felt trendy. Our waitress was nice to us and we did not feel rushed. I feel like we rushed her because we were starving. We started with the chicken teriyaki lettuce wrap. My lady ordered the teriyaki chicken because she has been craving rice and a side of miso soup. I had the ramen noodle bowl because why not. Lettuce wrap arrived and it was mighty colorful. There was lettuce, sliced red bell peppers, vinegar with chopped green onions, carrot strips, and white rice. The teriyaki chicken was sliced like Mcdonald's grilled chicken on their salad. It looked like it too. Meh. Our dinner arrived and my lady's food looked identical to the lettuce wrap, but without the lettuce and vegetables. I was sorry for her. She tasted her miso soup, and I swear she did not taste it again. My ramen bowl with meat (I forgot if it was beef or pork) was, for the lack of other words, weird. It had red cabbage, peas, chopped green pepper, 6 minute egg, ramen noodles with some kind of soup at the bottom, and meat. The good thing about this meal was the meat tasted like pork adobo (a Filipino dish) and it was pretty good. The rest, eh. Actually the dish was cold. Forgive my ignorance, but was it supposed to be cold? Will look for a different place to eat at if we ever stop by in Aksarben. Probably eat popcorn in the nearby movie theater.

Slow service. I didn't care for the sushi. Since Blue changed its menu I've been looking for a replacement. This is not it. Truffle fries were good though.

Ok, so up to now out favorite Sushi spot has been Sushi Japan (and we still love it), but Ponzu beat them hands down. Being in Aksarben Village helps. We went during the Farmers Market, lots to walk around and see. The place is modern and clean, open floor plan. Nice outside area and bar seating. Beer is super cold and served in the proper glasses. We had the kids with us so we started with steamed dumplings- not your typical frozen, bland concoctions. We had the fried wontons with tuna- good but not quite what we were expecting as its a mess of tuna on top of the fried wonton, but it was good. We ordered two runs rolls, a tuna nagiri role, the hot mess and another shrimp and crab role with a jalapeño on top. The tuna quality was amazing and the hit news had a nice hot burst of flavor. My fav was the spiciness of the last role and it had the right touch of tempura for crunchiness. My daughter had the ramen noodle soup with mild green curry, a soft boiled egg, scallions and bbq pork. Yes I said bbq pork and it was awesome. The blending of flavors in that one bowl was extraordinary. We all had some. You add the full plate of fries and she was in heaven. Service was great and turn time was perfect. This is our new favorite sushi place in town.
(5)Elisha M.
The place appeared clean when you first enter but as soon as we sat down we noticed a mess on our table. We promptly asked the host to clean it up and she did. Then when we got our plates they had remnants of food stuck to almost every one. We asked for new plates and again.. There was food stuck to the sides... Even though the sushi was good I won't be visiting again.

I love Ponzu! This is one of the few restaurants where I would prefer to sit at the bar, even if I am with people, because I enjoy their bartenders so much. The atmosphere is great - clean, bright, and modern, and they also have plenty of great patio seating. They have a bunch of fun drinks, including a twist on the Moscow Mule. One of my favorites is the Pomagrita (a pomegranate margarita). Just be careful - those things are dangerous. Their beer list is limited, but they do have a few Japanese beers if you want to try something new, and they have a decent wine selection. Foodwise, I am not a fan of their sushi. But that isn't an issue because I have never tried anything off their regular menu that I didn't like. One of my favorites is definitely their truffle fries. I also really enjoy the grilled chicken pear salad (for the few times I try to be healthy here), crispy pork sliders (amazing!), kobe burger, and their surf and turf (pan seared scallops and steak medallions). Costwise, it is a little on the high side (comparable to most sushi places in town), but the quality is very good. They also have happy hour and reverse happy hour, which isn't as generous as some other nearby restaurants, but is still a good way to knock a few bucks off your bill. I would definitely recommend trying Ponzu - sit at the bar and try the truffle fries!
(5)Kyle K.
A good choice for sushi. For drinks, I had the Red X IPA (from Infusion in Benson). My wife had the Goose Island Matilda. There's nothing better than going to a place that has a diverse beer selection. The edamame is a good appetizer while perusing the sushi menu. The selections are limited and that's okay. I would rather have a smaller, quality menu than one that is overwhelmingly large and then the sushi is just mediocre. Make sure to order some curry fries, too. Keep it up, Ponzu!

Came here last night for happy hour in between Beer Fest and a movie next door. The place was classier than I thought it would be as all of the servers were dressed in black. The place really seems to be going for a hip vibe. We sat near the bar and the bartender, who was very friendly and attentive during a busy night, took care of us. I was pretty impressed with the happy hour menu overall. They have several rolls for $5: Cali, Calamari Roll, Crunchy Cali, Spicy Sake, Tekka, Spicy Tekka, Crunchy Veggie, Crazy Crab, Super Asparagus, Unagi Maki, Crispy Shrimp, and Negi Hamachi. I ordered the Crunchy Cali (crab, avocado, cucumber, sweet chili, and rolled in panko). It was definitely crunchy and pretty good. In addition to these rolls, they also have several other rolls for $8: Firecracker, Portland, Seattle, CoCo Loco, Berry Bomb, Tombo Trouble, Maui Wowie, and Super Tako. I had the Maui Wowie and my husband had the Portland. I was sad that the Maui Wowie (salmon, crab mix, escolar, and mango, topped with mango sauce and toasted coconut) only included five pieces. With that said, I did enjoy it and it was a rather unique roll. My husband had the Portland (spicy salmon, crab, cucumber, and panko). I didn't end up trying his, but he said he enjoyed it. In addition to these great sushi deals, they also have discounted appetizers during happy hour. We ordered the house fries with truffle sauce. We really enjoyed the fries (especially considering they were only $3.50). I'd highly recommend them. In sum, I found the sushi to be pretty good...nothing amazing, mind you, but definitely worth the prices they charge. I would definitely recommend you check this place out during happy hour (3-6 PM typically, and 9-11 PM Friday and Saturday).

We had an enjoyable evening, but I went with sushi in mind. Friends wanted an entree, and they thought that $12-18 entrees were a bit steep for the venue. I would have to agree. This is not fine dining, but nice casual. Dessert was lovely, a nice take on something interesting to go along with ice cream and the presentation was terrific. I must say, though, they make a mean traditional martini (friends had those fruity "martini's" and said they were deelish, but I'm a straight up dirty martini fan and it was perfect. Back to Sakura Bana for my authentic sushi, trust me. Ponzu's take on sushi was just average. It was underwhelming and uninspired...not awful, but okay. I mean -- who wants deep fried sushi??? Weird. It would not be "top of mind" if someone asked me, "Where should we go for sushi?" Waitperson was very attentive and did everything he could to make our experience positive -- but there is only so much he could control. Their entree menu is limited and pricey, sushi menu is quite large, but in all the items we tried, none especially knocked our socks off. Note: On our recent visit, we tried the Grouper and fries as well as the Shrimp Enchiladas. The best part of the meal? Drinks and appetizers. Truth.

As often as I go to Ponzu, I figured I should update my review. I adjusted my review to four stars since some of the changes they made with their new menu are disappointing. First, they took the pork sliders off the happy hour menu and raised the price from $5 to $10. They are delicious, but no way I'm paying double. I'll think about forgiving them since they added black pepper calamari to happy hour and it is pretty yummy. This is coming from someone who doesn't usually like calamari (it's a texture thing). They also took off the surf and turf (scallops and pork belly amazingness) but added an entree that sounds similar but more expensive. One other thing I wish they would think about adding is more cocktails. They have a handful but nothing that I've tried so far is noteworthy. The lychee martini is undrinkable and tastes like pure alcohol with no flavor whatsoever. I can be a little particular when it comes to drinks, but the three friends with me tried it as well and agreed it was just bad. To Ponzu's credit, they did take it back and give me a glass of moscato instead. On the plus side, it looks like they added a ton of new dishes and sushi rolls that I need to try! Will definitely continue to be a regular happy hour customer.

A very good sushi restaurant. I compare Ponzu to other sushi places like Blue and Hiro as far as ambiance goes. It's pretty trendy and the prices definitely match it. The food was pretty good, nothing that blew my mind, but it was pretty good. My wife and I had a Groupon, which is the main reason we went and tried it out. The service was good for being as busy as it was on a Friday night. We had to wait about 30 minutes for a table, which didn't bother me as I knew it was an up-and-coming sushi restaurant in the growing area of Aksarben. Overall, the sushi was good, but like Blue, the prices are a tad high, even for the general salmon/tuna rolls. I will be going back to give it another try.

Visited on a Wednesday night with a friend from out of town. We got there towards the end of happy hour so we decided to give the happy hour menu a run. Décor- nice and open. well lit with a quasi separate area for the bar and the restaurant. No concerns Service- was ok. we sat at the bar and it seemed the bartender was easily distracted/entertained by what I guessed was a friend sitting at the bar. Nothing crazy but the place was pretty much empty and we still had to flag him down. Food- Tried a wide selection of appetizers and rolls that were on the happy hour menu. Everything was ok. Nothing to write home about but decent. Overall, it was alright. In retrospect, it probably would have better... and cheaper... just to sit in dining room and eat. I will return if I am in the area but it isn't on my "gotta have" list.
(3)Sam S.
We had the special roll today called beauty, and it was topped with strawberries. Strange sounding but fabulous. Also had a few other special rolls. They were great as well. It was a slow night, and the attention of the servers was very good.

I went a couple times last year and then was asked to go again last week. And BOY and I happy. I am happy to please when it come to sushi. I had the squid salad... wonderfully delicous! I had the firecracker, flamethrower, tsumani and Jammin' Salmon! All were GREAT. The best was the flamethrower!! But the Jammin' Salmon was SLAMMING! We also had fried cheesecake... yummy. Won't have it again. But it was good. I like fried ice cream better! My husband is not a huge sushi fan- when we go to Blue he doesn't leave feeling full and never expresses that the food was that great, but with Ponzu... he continued to talk about how delish it was!! The waiter... SUPERB! Love him!! He is a part of the dinning experience-- so friendly, funny and talkative!!! I also- like that it isn't as crowded as Blue!! So it isn't as loud... overall a better dinning experience that Blue (but I still love Blue-- not saying that)!
(5)Vasilie C.
I'll start off by saying the food here is amazing. I had the teriyaki chicken with coconut jasmine rice and my date had the sesame seared salmon. All items had top notch presentation and were delicious. The tea was a huge a disappointment, as it came in a cup that was too large and was a generic instant Bigelow tea bag. For the place being as nice and the food so good it seems like tea was an afterthought. The interior is decorated very tastefully and the restrooms are very clean. The atmosphere inside is that they are a clean, somewhat upscale restaurant. Service was mediocre. Staff was very friendly, but they forgot to bring our tea until when I was almost done with my entrée. They took our utensils away after the salads but didn't bring new ones with entrée, so we had to ask for new utensils. Also, they brought us our check before my wife even finished her entrée... What if we wanted desert? Overall, I would come again, but service needs to improve a bit. Pros: great food, great atmosphere, very clean. Cons: service is sub Par, it's a bit on the expensive side for sushi.
(4)Thomas H.
Rolls were better than most. Good presentation and excellent flavor. Service needed to come up a notch. Recommend the octopus salad;)
(4)Rachel A.
We started our evening here, making it in 20 minutes before happy hour was over (which is fantastically priced). Our waitress was extremely accommodating to our party of four - grabbing happy hour drinks and sushi and appetizer orders in quick order to get us the best deal. Rolls are gorgeous and delicious. I know it sounds crazy - because it's primarily a sushi joint...but try the truffle fries! Sooooo good - and a mere $3 at happy hour! Great location at Aksarben - and covered parking garage very nearby!
(5)Sean P.
Had the unagi nigiri, spicy tuna, negi hamachi, and salmon rolls. Absolutely awful. The tuna and salmon tasted borderline sour. The actual execution, i.e. quality of the construction of the roll, was piss poor too. My plate looked like a mess. By far the worst sushi I've eaten in Omaha.
(1)Marc S.
This was my first and will be my last visit to Ponzu. Service was deplorable. Server brought us one glass of water as they had ran out of glasses. Ordered iced tea to drink after the server disappeared for 10-15 minutes. Sushi was unremarkable. Teriyaki sauce on entree was entirely too salty. Side salad was never brought despite our reminding the server. Overall, wait staff seemed stressed and stretched thin. A memorable experience for all the wrong reasons.
(1)Tracey K.
Great location (walking distance from my hotel). I tried the Aksarben Roll (spicy crab, avocado, beef tenderloin, shoestring onions and carola sauce) - absolutely fantastic!!!
(5)Robert N.
This would be my pick for a pre, or post-movie meal at Aksarben. Solid sushi and competent service.
(4)Luke I.
Ponzu Sushi has made great improvements. The staff is very attentive and pleasant and food is delicious! Their Maui Waui rolls are the best! The drink menu is crisp and refreshing and the wine is decent!
(4)Gabriel P.
Pretty great place. Service is generally decent and the ambience is cool if you like modern styling. The food is great--roll selection is diverse, creative, and well executed. Nothing mind blowing, but just really solid sushi all around. The appetizers and hot entrees are extremely good too, if you're dining with people squeamish about sushi or just in the mood to mix it up. Only real drawback is the price is just a little high--nothing terrible, just pretty standard for a midrange sushi place.
(4)Mike S.
Good food, reasonable prices. Can't remember what I used to get but I always enjoyed it :-)
(4)Steve T.
Nice looking place,. The happy hour is great as it's every day 3-6pm and have some great choices on the menu both appetizers and sushi. Drink specials aren't too bad either and pretty stiff. With that said most of the appetizers are fried (Pot stickers, Fries, Wings) so not your typical sushi restaurant menu. If healthier options for appetizers I would rate this place better. The Pull Pork sliders where great! Sushi was also made very well and plenty of stuffing.
(3)Meg M.
Worst service. Went in yesterday and was told to sit anywhere from a server. Sat for 15 min. with three different servers passed our table repeatedly without saying a word, including the person who told us to seat ourselves so we left. I recently moved here and wanted to try it out, but after this I will not be back and will be telling others the same. I worked in the service industry for years and was appalled at the staff's behavior. I would give 0 stars if yelp would allow it.
(1)Therese H.
Another great meal at Ponzu! The food was fantastic - my nephew and his wife had sushi, my grand niece had fish and chips and I had my favorite appetizer, the lettuce wraps! The waiter was great and worked with the kitchen to meet some dietary needs. I'm looking forward to our next visit!
