Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

The place looks sketchy. Service seemed OK, but didn't know that I needed to sit down and would be served. Looking at the menu, the chicken quesadillas looked good, so I ordered with an orchetta rice milk drink. I sat down and I was served stale tortilla chips and watery green sauce and red sauce. Had to leave to take a call because the TV was to noisy with Spanish music. Came back and there it was a Chicken quesidilla and some lettuce on a large plate. Thinking the picture had two sides, but got some lettuce with orange peel on top. It looked nice, but I needed some rice and refried beans because I felt starved. The quesidilla wasn't that great. Cashier said it would be like a fajita with onion and peppers, but didn't come that way. Well, guess I should have just went to a gas station to pick up a piece of pizza or something.

THE FOOD OF MY PEOPLE!!!! Just sitting down to write this review makes me want to go throw some tacos in my face and skip the writing. The chips + salsa situation is a little funky, so I avoided it. (Also - gluten.) But if you're looking for good, authentic street tacos, with just cilantro and onions on them (as they should be), and if you're into things like lengua y cabeza (duh), you are gonna love this place. Literally everything here is good. All of it. You can't go wrong with literally a single damn thing on the menu. Even the ice cream selection that looks like it hasn't been touched in awhile is outstanding (and still quite fresh, all things considered). THEY HAVE JAMAICA! (roughly pronounced ha-MY-ca, for the pale folks in the building) And horchata! I am seriously going back right now. Just talking about it makes me need more.

This place looks dicey from the outside and you may be a bit thrown by the Goodrich sign, but come inside and experience a hidden gem. They have a good selection of meats and seafood. The cashier was very knowledgeable about the menu. I ordered the quesadilla, which was filled with steak and cheese. It was perfectly cooked. Then I had a sope with carnitas. It was also abundantly topped with meat and other toppings. My only criticism is that the meat was under seasoned. The corn tortillas do not reheat well in the micro, which is not a criticism, but something to consider if you bring home leftovers. I can't wait to go back and try the tacos and tortas!

Another awesome recommendation and amazing South O Mexican food. Unassuming store front, fast food setup inside and just when you think "why did I come here" the chips and salsa arrive along with a menu full of all your favorites. I went with the tamale, a taco pastor, a taco lengua and rice and beans on the side. Home run!!!! The tamale was a perfectly spiced pork and chilis, the pastor was like nothing I have had before but can't wait to have it again - simply amazing. The lengua was tender and both cooked and seasoned well. I really enjoyed the rice and beans as well (especially the rice). I also had a a bit of a cheese enchilada and a beef enchilada. These are NOT the standard "load them with sauce and melted cheese" - queso fresco, just the right amount of sauce and simply terrific enchiladas. Now, the kicker. The ice cream! I have never had Goodrich before but the cookies and cream in the single serve cone was the best thing this side of Blue Bell and would be worth the trip itself. Overall, a great meal and an amazing price (seriously, that was cheap).

Best Mexican food in Omaha! This is my favorite Mexican food in Omaha! It's the closest thing I have found that has food like back home in San Diego California. So far I have enjoyed everything I have tried. Even though this place is in south Omaha and I live in northwest Omaha I will drive to Los Portales when I'm really craving some good Mexican food.

I've never had a bad time here. The food is delicious and the service is great. Everyone is always very friendly. Definitely my favorite place for decently priced and delicious Mexican food! They have waffle cone Wednesday too :)!

Driven by this place hundreds of times and decided to give it try after reading so many good reviews! It is a small little place but had plenty of seating. I ordered carnitas Tacos Dorados de Harina. It came with 3 large tacos, rice, refried beans and salad. They were good. The pork was tender but a little bland. Luckily there was a hot and flavorful red salsa to spice it up a bit. Will probably come again but will not become a regular.

I contemplated hard about writing a review about this place...it's not because of the food or service really, it's because it's such a diamond in the rough I wanted to keep this place a secret all to myself and my boyfriend. BUT, how Yelpy would that be? It would be very un-Yelpy-like so fear not, I am here to share with you this little gem of a place that was shared with us by our very own Omaha Community Manager Will S. I confess, we got a tad bit lost looking for it and when we parked outside we were uncertain of this place. But we put our trust in our CM and threw caution to the wind! Cuz that's how Yelpers roll, foodie adventures are what we love! We sat down and our waitress came soon after that offering water and drinks. We studied the menu a bit and decided on the Asada Nachos Supreme, I had the supreme tacos which I did not realize they would be similar to regular tacos {toppings etc} as tacos you would find at T.Bell, Joel had the Los Portales Quesadilla and there were a couple of tamales ordered as well. The Nachos were AH-mazing! If I could have ordered just that I would, perhaps next time I will. It had avocado, asada, cheese, sour cream, beans, the works and boy oh boy it was good! My boyfriend's Quesadilla was just as delicious and both were a generous size. And yes they have horchata horchata lovers! So there you go Yelpy peeps this little Mexican Diamond in the rough is one of those mom & pops that you gotta make a trip out to because the food is delicious and I may not be of Mexican ethnicity but I'm pretty sure this is authentic :)

This place has consistently made me the best steak torta I have ever had. The outside is a bit rough and the inside is still essentially the same as when the building was a Goodrich ice cream store. Not fancy or polished but delicious and an amazing bargin for the price.

The best restaurant in Omaha! I've been coming to this little gem since they opened and they do not disappoint! Everything is sooooo good and fresh. The tortas are definitely the best ever and I just love the tripas. If you love authentic Mexican this is the spot!!! They have Goodrich ice cream too!!!! THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!!
(5)Joshua N.
The food was good but not great. The meat was over cooked and dry. The staff need to pay more attention to customers, not chatting or on the cell phone. All and all it is ok, but I will look for a better Mexican restaurant.

Save your money. Food was cool in temperature and overrated in previous Yelp comments

I like this place. It's nothing fancy to look at, but does it need to be if the food is amazeballs? Try the steak burrito or the chicken enchiladas. Great for a late night food spot too. Fresh to order tex mex at it's best.
(4)Les S.
Pleasantly surprised at how good this place was. Read my tip on this place. A little run down, but don't pass on it. The food is first rate! Highly recommend this for a try. We did lunch there. My Brother and Father in law eat there all the time, and glad they brought us there!

Don't be fooled by the look of it from the outside, this place is a GEM! REAL AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD! Bilingual friendly waitress's ,super fast and great prices. You can also call in an order and just drive by and pick it up. We come here a lot and have never had a problem.

One of my favorite restaurants of all time. Tortillas are made in-house. Salsa (also house made) is always a little different with each batch, but always amazing. Love the tacos, sopes and tortas. Free chips and bean dip when you sit down. Bonus: There's a Goodrich Ice Cream inside as well. I discovered this place years ago when I worked downtown. My coworkers and I once ate here seven days in a row. We could've gone 70. Try two al pastor tacos (with corn tortillas, cilantro and onion) and a tamale you'll be stuffed for about $6. Here's what a typical visit is like. You walk in an unassuming former Subway and self-seat yourself at a table or booth. A server comes over and brings you chips and dip. Now you're happy. You get your drink and order your tacos/tortas/tameles/etc. In a matter of minutes you get your food. Then you eat it and continue to remain happy. You sit for a while, maybe get a drink refill. Then you get up and go pay at the cash register. You look a the ice cream next to the cash register. You decide against it because, well, you're full. You smile at your server/cashier. Then you head back to your table and drop a few bucks for a tip. While you're leaving, you're already planning your next visit.

Love this place, best kept secret of Omaha. Looks like an old neighborhood restaurant, in the old goodrich ice cream shop, but the staff is friendly and don't let the looks deceive you, it is so good! They have authentic Mexican food, and some of the best Mexican sandwiches "tortas". The civeche is great, and the tacos are wonderful! I even tried the cactus, and it wasn't bad. They are open until 2am, so late night is no problem!

Close to work, so we eat here relatively frequently, including working lunches at times. I've never had a bad experience. The carne asada burrito is my favorite, but their tacos are also excellent. Great food at a fair price.
(4)Jeremy S.
When you are typically the only gringo in the joint you know it's authentic and good. Get carne asada tacos, tamales, carne asada quesadillas or gorditas. You will not be disappointed. This is the best mexican food I've ever had anywhere and the prices are very reasonable. It's just too bad they don't sell beer or margaritas.

Los Portales has great service, amazing food at a great price, but a terrible atmosphere. :) It took me over two years before I actually went in, because the restaurant front really looks bad. The inside is no better, but it is clean and certainly family friendly. We often get a burrito, which is large enough for my husband and I to share and it costs about 6 bucks. Delicious, too! This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in town. They also serve Goodrich ice cream. We probably get take out at Los Portales at least twice a month and occasionally come into eat as well. So far, one of my favorite restaurants in Omaha. They also stay open LATE. Food and service is five stars.

don't judge it by the outside. the food is delicious here. for some time we were going 2 to 3 times a week from benson area for dinner. Love their Chicarron Gorditas( very spicy), their carnitas torta is good too.
(5)Jeff R.
The best, most authentic Mexican food in Omaha. The menu focuses on traditional Mexican street food. Tacos, burritos, tortas and gorditas are offered with 9 kinds of meat, ranging from traditional asada to more adventurous cabeza. Dishes are made to order and service is quick and friendly. Portions are generous and prices are very reasonable. Los Portales is a great gem of Omaha cuisine. Word of advice: This is not Hector's or any of the other faux Mexican chains which proliferate our fair city. There are no sweet goopy red sauces smothering poorly prepared canned goods. This is a great, casual place with incredible food and service.

This has to go down as our worst restaurant experience ever. Food was terrible!

Absolutely delicious. We stopped in here on our drive across the country and were very pleasantly surprised. Everything was very authentic, fresh, and quickly prepared. Highly recommended!
(4)Leo T.
It's hard to find good Mexican food on the road, so to my surprise this is one my favorites that I've been to. Everything was so good. Almost like the way mom cooks, Almost. It's a small place, one could miss it if you are not looking. I had the chicken enchiladas. It came with FRESH Mexican rice, fried beans. The meal was not that expensive and it filled me up. I was so happy finally finding a place that actually cooks good Mexican food. If you are in the area, you need to stop by.
(4)Bob H.
Yea, tacos! We had the carne asada, carnitas and the al pastor. I liked the asada the best. Very good beef flavor and well seasoned. The carnitas were a close second. The al pastor was ok. All came with fresh onions and cilantro. We also had some tortilla soup. Different than other kind I've tried before, but tasty nonetheless. Almost like a cheese based soup. Good service even with the packed, Sunday lunch The location is an old Goodrich and they still serve Goodrich ice cream. Pretty cool!
(4)Christine B.
Went to lunch with a couple of girlfriends on a recommendation. If you're looking for Americanized Mexican food in a pretty, trendy atmosphere, this is not the place for you. But, if you're in the mood for a couple of good tacos, definitely stop in. We'll be going back. Gotta try a couple of other menu items!
(4)Heather C.
Great Mexican food with speedy/friendly service. The tacos are amazing. May want to brush up on your Spanish before going.
(4)Marty S.
Wonderful tacos and tamales. Try the carnitas soft taco, a real value at $1.75, served on a corn tortilla, lots of onion and cilantro, with lime wedges on the side. Have 2, they're small.
