WHAT????? Good Mexican food in Nebraska.???? You have to be kidding. Wait....how about GREAT Mexican food in Nebraska??...You have to be nuts.... Well, I must be nuts then. I grew up in a Latino community, I've eaten in Mexico, I've been invited over to Mexican family events and picnics....I have eaten GREAT Mexican food before. Los Compayes comes extremely close to the best I have ever had. I drove by this place, not looking for Mexican food but I saw it out of the corner of my eye. Not hungry, I still had to try something from there. So I ordered a pork taco and a pork gordita. They also have a serve yourself salsa bar. 5 kinds of salso, chopped onions and cilantro, jalapeno's, etc. The taco was served like I had in Mexico. Two small corn tortillas doubled up, folded in half with meat in the crease. Just like being in Mexico.....especially loading it up with things from the salsa bar. That cart in the streets of Rosarita still has this place beat, but not by that much. I also ordered a gorita, and it was GREAT. It's like a pita bread but really corn meal stuffed with ....pork, beans, cheese. The corn meal exterior is fried on both sides. It comes out like a meat patty but thinner. This was made by hand and carefully grilled on a stove. Wow eating it hot with the cheese dripping out....and the meat hot juicy This place could compete in Los Angeles.

This food was very tasty and authentic! My daughter and I are picky eaters so we just had tacos a la carte. My boyfriend, however, had chimichangas and I haven't seen him this excited about Mexican food in a while. The salsa for the chips was also very tasty with just enough spice to give it great flavor. The only thing I was disappointed with was the lack of cheese on the nachos. I supposed I view nachos as having melted cheese on them with lots of extra goodies. These nachos had just a little shredded cheese with mostly lettuce and chicken piled on. Overall, we enjoyed this little Mexican restaurant and we were pleasantly surprised

Los Compayes is probably my favorite Mexican restaurant in Omaha... Period. I've been coming here for the last several years on a regular basis. I mean like at least two or three times a month! They have great food and are consistently awesome. My favorites are the burritos and tacos. Every once in a while I treat myself to their chilaquiles or menudo. It's all unbelievable. I can't tell you which is my favorite. I've had almost all of their meats: asada, pollo, tripa, carnitas, al pastor, birria, lingua, chorizo, cachete... There's more but I can't remember; they're all awesome. The meats are always cooked perfectly and seasoned just right. They have three fresh salsas: roasted spicy red, green avocado and jalapeño and a mild but very flavorful tomato salsa. Their ingredients are fresh and they have cooks that know what they are doing. The staff is always friendly and the prices are very reasonable. When you're all done and wake up from your food coma, you can go into the grocery store that adjoins and shop for your favorite Mexican ingredients, brands, meats, vegetables and fruits. They're also pounding out fresh tortillas back there. I've found my molcajete and comal there along with some hard to find spices. Describing the food doesn't do it justice. If your craving authentic Mexican food, get yo butt to Los Compayes and give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

I'm starved for good tacos ever since my beloved Taqueria Tijuana has been closed for repairs. I decided I just couldn't wait anymore and so last Sunday I grabbed the family and headed on over to 33rd & Q to give it a new place a chance. Los Compayes is definitely a contender. After eating the authentic tacos served up in S. Omaha for awhile, I know what's up. The waitress greeted us in the light, high ceilinged dining room with a basket of chips and a trio of salsas. While waiting for drinks, we observed an attached storefront with a multitude of pinatas and at one end of the dining room a little ice cream stand which my kids couldn't stop drooling over. Frozen chocolate covered bananas covered in brightly colored sprinkles? They must know the way to my kids hearts! Now for the food. I ordered my new standard meal- one cachete and 2 al pastor tacos. I also opted for some beans. The kids had one al pastor a piece and the hubby his favorite carne asada. You can see the grill behind the front counter and we tried not to stare too hard at the cook, mentally willing the food to come out faster. Before long we had our meals and got down to business. The tacos were just right. Tender, savory meat, a little cilantro and minced onion on two small corn tortillas. The beans, smoky and homey. I'm a happy camper. BUT, that's not the best part of our visit! While waiting for our notoriously slow eating 6 yr old to finish, I took the younger child and wandered over to the store which is entered via the dining room. Holy cow! Was I surprised to find a whole meat counter with several butchers working on a Sunday. The place was bustling with customers ordering fresh al pastor or milenesa and arrachera (flank steak) to take home. In the back was a little tortilleria where women were hard at work making those. The rest of the market sold everything from fresh produce to brooms and cleaning supplies, to scads of Mexican candies. If only I'd been prepared and brought my grocery list. I WILL BE BACK! Good stuff, I highly recommend.

I'm a little sad because I think this place got new owners, and it's "eh" at best. No more fresh salsa bar, minimal meat in the burritos and the seasonings made the carnitas taste different. Prices increased as well. All around a changed atmosphere, and the staff seemed unprepared, and confused when I ordered to go. The logo and interior of the building has changed, so I'm pretty sure it is under new ownership. Sad. Guess I have to find a new taco/ burrito/ torta place in South Omaha.

As of right now, this is the Mexican place to go to for my family. My wife loves the burritos and tacos, and I love their sandwiches. She even doesn't mind that there is no cheese on there items. Once again, she loves her Mexican food topped with the stuff. I order my food without the stuff. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. We actually needed the help since the menu was hard to understand (language barrier) the first time we went. To add to all of these great factors about the restaurant, the salsa bar is a wonderful addition. Many different types and levels of spices that can be picked to add to the already delicious food.

Pretty good stuff. Been wanting to try this place since I saw the other two reviews We tried several items including.. Tacos - small doubled up corn tortillas -Carne Asada (3.5 out 5) -Pollo Asado (3) -Carnitas (4) Very tender -Chorizo (3) Also, tried the Papa Loca. Its almost like a hash brown with mild chiles (poblanos i'd guess), cheese, carne asada and sour cream. Served with two tostadas. Pretty tasty. (3.5) Another try was the Vampiro. Tostada with two kinds of cheese and carne asada (but like most of items you can get whatever). Could have been my favorite. (4) Salsa bar was awesome!! In addition to the great salsas, they had diced onions, cabbage, radishes, pickled red onion (yummy), cilantro and lime wedges (5) We both had the Horchata. Pretty decent, but I've had better. Side notes: the tacos are $1.50 a piece and they run a $8 lunch buffet Monday thru Friday. I'm going back for the buffet. Service was great. Very nice people that were happy to answer any questions. Kind of an order and take a seat type of place. Overall, I would recommend this place. Give it a shot

We went here for the first time last night. Food seemed very authentic. Tacos and Quesadillas only on the menu, but many many meat choices. Fresh salsa bar as well, along with veggies. Menu said there was an all you can eat buffet, but we didn't see it out. We had carne asada, chorizo, and adobada tacos. All were very good, a little small but only $1.75 for 2 little tacos. Definitely worth trying out. We'll go back again.

Great authentic Mexican food in Omaha. This is a small place with an adjoining grocery store. The tacos, carne asada, and tortas were all very good. The manager/cook could tell we weren't regulars and was very friendly and helpful, offering to help with the menu (entirely in Spanish). The best part of Los Compayes was the self-serve salsa bar with 6 varieties of fresh, tasty salsa, roasted peppers, and salad fixings. I would definitely go back for fresh, authentic food at a good price with great service!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
