Great little hole in the wall in South Omaha. Best Elotes (corn cobs covered in cheese and some white sauce). The also have decent ice cream and shakes. It's very informal and always full and loud. You feel transported immediately to another place!

I can spend $5 per person at the local froyo shop and not blink an eye, yet when these folks charge me $3.75 for three desserts (a scoop of mango, a scoop of chocolate, and a flan to go for a late afternoon treat) I did a double take. Are you sure you're charging me the correct amount? Are you sure you calculated ALL three of our orders? Yup. It's that ridiculously affordable. More flavors of ice cream (including lime flavor sprinkled with chili powder) and fruit bars than your local Baskin Robbins, Helados Santa Fe is my new post-dollar-taco-lunch-binge go-to place. Haven't your heard? Ice cream fills in the cracks, so no matter how full you are, there's always room for homemade ice cream. And don't forget to grab a flan to go. Why eat donuts for breakfast when you can have flan?!

Apparently we were on a roll for sweets at the end of this year's Tour de Taco, so we audibled to Helados Santa Fe for a closer. I will say that if you don't mind moldy dank smells, feel free to enjoy your ice cream and pelatas inside. William G. and I ventured outdoors and commenced some kind of accidental speed eating competition to finish before our treats melted. I enjoyed a paleta (think popsicle) of the pineapple-chile variety, and since this was also my first time having paletas... I see more of these in my future with all the interesting flavor options! Here's what they have on tap here. Paletas: Arroz - Rice Bolis Chicle - Bubble Gum Choco-Chip Coco - Coconut Esquimales - Eskimos? Fresa - Strawberry Fresas c. Crema - Strawberry w. Cream Frutas Secas - Dried Fruits? Galleta - Cookie Limon - Lemon Mango c. Chile Mango Mangonada Melon Nuez - Walnut Pina - Pineapple Pina c. Chile - Pineapple w. Chile Sandia - Watermelon Vainilla - three guesses on this one Helados (Ice Cream): Choco-Chip Chongos - cinnamon and milk Coco Fresa Fresas c. Crema Fruitas Secas Galleta Gansito - a Mexican snack cake that's covered in chocolate and filled with strawberry & cream Mango Mantecado y Chocolate - Shortbread and Chocolate Nuez Rompope - Eggnog Vainilla Zarzamora c. Queso - blackberry cheesecake? More great informaiton on Helados here: thrillist.com/eat/chicag… Only after the fact did I remember that the OWH said this place had some kind of amazing 'bread ice cream'. Maybe that's the Mantecado y Chocolate? Maybe I can go back tomorrow?

We loved this place. We stopped here on our x-country drive. They make about 50 flavors including vanilla with chocolate, strawberries and mexican bread. They let my 3 kids taste all they wanted before ordering. There are no flavor labels, so the woman helping us named them all for us.

Great ice cream parlor in South Omaha. They offer flavors such as papaya or cactus, along with more traditional American flavors. Next time you're thinking of heading out to Dairy Queen, maybe try Helada Santa Fe instead....DQ something different ;)
