When several of the folks I trust on here rate a place as highly as they rated El Rancho I tend to pay attention. Anne and I arrived before noon and we were the only English speaking people in the place. We were greeted promptly, found our own seat in a booth and served warm chips and FIVE different choices of salsa within minutes. The salsa choices ranged from mild to burning down the house and every one of the five had flavor, not just heat, not just mild, FLAVOR! The entrees we chose (enchiladas and flautas) were excellent. No back flips, no whiz bang, just first rate Mexican cooking. This one goes right to the top of the list of go to Mexican restaurants.

Great food and great service! The chicken enchilada and tacos were awesome. We will be back again soon! Thanks!

This place wasn't even on my radar. I was trying to coax my brother into eating at some other hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant and he suggested this place instead. After dining here and checking the reviews I was genuinely shocked at how popular this place is (and deservedly so). I ordered a combination that included enchiladas and flautas. They were very good. Likewise, the assortment of salsas that came before the meal were also tasty. However, their corn chips are bulletproof. I have a feeling they just fry up their leftover soft corn tortillas from the previous day. They were tasty. Hard as heck, but tasty. Overall, very good food for those who like their Mexican fare a bit more on the authentic side. The restaurant is rather dark on the inside. Mostly due to the combination of black and dark red paint that covers the walls and ceiling. Service was friendly and attentive. I don't speak a word of Spanish and there was no communication problems at all. I will definitely be back

Excellent food! It doesn't look like much on the outside (we almost drove away), but once we were inside and seated, we were so glad we stayed. It's basic furnishings but extremely friendly staff and such good food. Our food came quite quickly. The five salsa platter at the beginning is GREAT. Personally, I love being in these places where you hear hardly any English but feel so comfortable.

Awesome and extremely reasonable. Lots of locals and locals usually know what it's all about. Excellent food! We were there on a Wednesday night and what do you know, it's $1.35 taco night and we aren't talking hamburger with a little seasoning. We had one of the best steak tacos we have ever had. The pork tacos were also amazing. Lots of meat in them and full of flavor. We ordered a sopes and it was excellent as well. We will be back and we may even drive all the way in on a Wednesday for $1.35 tacos from Fremont and still consider it a steal of a deal.

Delicious Menudo! Perfect hangover cure. My man had a sandwich and was quite impressed, it really did look just like the picture. Service was great and gotta love the soccer games on the flatscreens.

Good food, chips were the best I've ever had in a Mexican restaurant, thick and non-greasy. The server waved me off when I started to order something she felt wasn't their best and pointed me towards the Mexican steak. Glad she did, 'twas great.

Awesome burritos. An excellent mom and pop Mexican restaurant. If you're looking for classic, authentic Mexican food, this is the place.

Dennis is pretty much spot on with the super cheap taco action and salsa bar analysis. I couldn't identify what many of the sauces were, but who cares? (If you're the kind of person that does... well, you're probably not here anyway.) Walking into the restaurant felt a little shady, but once we were inside it was a nice family type of place on a Sunday afternoon. Ordering was easy (just make sure you don't accidentally get the all-spanish menu like Bill did) and food was goooood. I had some chicken enchiladas w rice/beans and an al pastor taco to wash down the frenzy of chip and salsa action. The fact that they take plastic (minimum order $5) is nice too, since I'm usually short on cash and not too good at planning. I'd say overall one of my more favorite mexican restaurants in town.

Great service and food. Authentic and good menu. Good portions. Beef tongue tacos, enchiladas and menudo was great. Highly recommended.

El RRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrancho!! I cannot resist saying this without rrrrrrolling my rrrrrrs followed by a possible AIYAIYAIYAI! Anyway, I love this place! Why? $1 tacos on Wednesdays AND awesome crispy as F chips with five different types of salsa! I'm probably making myself sound like a total cheap-A but I will seriously get two tacos and a water with lime paying only $2 for my entire meal which also includes the chips and salsa. Like... is this for real???? I've never had any of the other food because it goes over my $1 budget, but the tacos are fantastico! If you don't like authentic mexi tacos, then you won't like these, but if you do you can get anything your little burrito heart desires inside the taco! One time I got head.... You know... head! When I saw that on the menu (which is all in Spanish btw so don't forget your google translator app) I had NO clue if I was going to get little chicken heads in my taco or what?! I guess it's just a part of the head other than the cheek because that's also something you can get in your taco if you want. My fave here though is Lengua - very soft and flavorful! Gimme some tongue and let's make out you dirty taco!!!! Now the penta-salsa... I feel like I'm tasting the rainbow because all of the salsas are different colors and I apologize because I can't tell you what any of them are!!! There is this light green ecto-plasm one that might be cilantro based?? Then there is regular salsa verde which is not regular by any means as it is delic!! Then there is another shade of green that might be made of four-leaf clovers? I don't know people... you'll have to try it yourself. Then there is the red salsa which is VERY good! And last but not least (and not shown in my picture) some orange one that is not cheese based... Maybe it's made from Oompa loompas? Again - not an expert. In the middle is pickled stuff to go with your crispy as F chip dipped in penta-salsa. Feel free to mix and match as you choose. Oh and my friends that I come here with LOVE the guac here... like there is never enough so if you are a guac fan, definitely give it a try. Smear it on your face if you are feeling frisky. I feel like this is my shortest review to date!! But I need not say more - If you want a cheap seven minutes in heaven with a taco and cinqo de salsa, check out El rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrancho! AIYAIYAIYAAAAAII!!!

Definitely one of my top spots in Omaha for authentic Mexican food. They usually have very good lunch specials and the salsas they bring out are unique and delicious. They have El Salvadorian pupusas that are not on the menu that are incredible - ask for them. Also if you are feeling adventurous try the tripas tacos. Very good service as well in my dozen or so visits.

Went back just now. Divine. The salsas have gotten even better. My husband had the enmoladas which he scarfed down, thoroughly enjoying. They had this fabulous mole that was sweet and spicy and everything right. I had 2 tongue tacos that were tender and tasty. Service was again very friendly and we can't wait to come back!

I'm almost hesitant to write a good review, because I don't want their secret to get out. You keep voting La Mesa the best Mexican restaurant in town, Omaha...the rest of us will eat at real, authentic Mexican restaurants. Do yourself a favor and try their tongue tacos. Seriously, best, most tender tongue I've ever had. Their buche (pork stomach) tacos are also delicious and do not in any way taste like, well, stomach. Pozole on the weekend is satisfying and full of pork and other delicious things that really warm you up on a cold winter evening. The servers have all been very nice, and you can't beat the price.

I cannot get enough for this place!! Their food is authentic and simply amazing. the service is phenomenal. What else would you need?! Great selection of beer and soda. Daily specials. Affordable & definitely worth your money's worth! As a college student & native southern Californian this is hands down my favorite Mexican restaurant in all of Omaha. I usually make a point to go on Thursdays when I can get my 4 asada tacos for 5$!!

El Rancho, you're pretty cool. Somewhat sketchy, and possibly a little scary depending on the time of day, but pretty cool nonetheless. Do not be alarmed (necessarily) by the bars on the windows and the door. NBD. The interior is nothing special, nor does it need to be, as the food speaks for itself. I love that they have daily specials (tacos, hay gurl). The salsa platter is not to be missed (but damn is it spicy). I almost got glutened here, but I asked the right questions in time and my body was spared the near misery. Cute husband got enchiladas, I got flautas, and we were both pleasantly surprised by the subtle but distinct seasoning of the meat. The rice is out of this freaking world. Also: jamaica! I would eat here again because of how close it is to my house, but would possibly not come here at night. Up to you, though!

My second favorite Mexican place in Omaha! The platter of salsas are not to be missed, and the Mole sauce that they use on their dishes is outstanding. Tacos are fairly standard here.... I would recommend ordering one of the entrées on their menu instead of tacos. Restaurant is very clean, services friendly, and prices are extremely reasonable.

AWESOME and AUTHENTIC food!!!! I had a taco pastor, taco chorizo, taco lengua and a half of carne asada sope......AMAZING......and the SALSA PENTAGON?!?!?!?!? WOW - the habanero was the best but they were all GREAT. Only flaw of the night? Needed more chips. I HAVE to get back here again even though the "tour of South Omaha" could take a year or more. AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!!

We are fortunate to have many a Mexican establishment to frequent here in Omaha. But why do I keep returning to El Rancho for my sit-down Mexi fix? ONE: The platter of salsas (light green, green, green, red and orange) with the middle bowl of pickled carrots, onions, peppers to much on while awaiting your meal. TWO: The fresh guacamole for $2.99 which comes in a small bowl, but is so packed full of fresh goodness you're actually struggling to finish the thing. THREE: The enmoladas (think enchiladas with mole sauce with a side of rice a beans) and their pozole (only available on weekends and less than $8 a bowl). I heart their pozole! FOUR: Service is spot on. I have no idea how the magic works...busy over lunch, but their staff has a way of keeping their eye on whose in, out, ready, done, etc. FIVE: Location not far from the interstate exit on Martha so makes taking a trip from home on the weekend totally do-able. SIX: Daily specials so you can get your papusa for $1.99 or taco for $1.25, although with already decent prices it's awesome that I can get my food "on sale." Seat yourself. Pay at the counter. Go with an empty belly.

Ever find a place you fall in love with and want to share with the world yet you don't want to share with the world because then they will go there. This is that place. First thing, the menus are in the Spanish. I almost asked for an English menu but then I decided they would laugh at me and I didn't want to risk the embarrassment. It is as good as everyone says, you should go there. Don't let the sketchy area and the run down strip mall scare you. Here's a tip, that's where the best food is. I think Jason and I were the only white people in there but that's okay! They welcomed us and sat us and brought out the most amazing salsa sampler and chips. I ordered the flautas and enchiladas. I believe the flautas are hand rolled in the back. I also ordered two tacos, a pastor and an asada. Yes and yes! I was having a magical moment with my tacos. I could have eaten my weight in them. Jason had chorizo and eggs with warm corn tortillas. He also had the same two tacos. There was nothing left on anyone's plate. All that food was less than $25.00 before tip. I want you to go there to experience what I did but I don't want you to go there because then you'll tell two friends and they'll tell two friends.... and so on and so on..

I love this place!!!! They give you 5 different flavors of salsa with chips. Taste so good! They have daily specials. Also, they have 5.99 combo (meal + french fries and a drink). I usually get quesedilla or beef burrito. Good price and good food. I highly recommend this place.

Tried it for the first time today. I wasn't that impressed. The chips come with 5 salsas but none of them were that great. The chips are thick and hard which I didn't care for. The al pastor taco and green enchiladas were average. My girlfriend did enjoy the casadilla. In my opinion there are several better mexican restauraunts in town.

This place just keeps getting better. Great staff, excellent food and a fantastic salsa assortment! This was the first stop on the Yelp Tour de Taco 2013. Everyone stuck with tacos since this was the beginning. I thought the tacos were fair but the variety of salsa, the roasted jalapeños & veggies and the basket of grilled onions that accompanied them made them a strong 3 stars. Service was good and the beer glass was so cold it was steaming. I would not hesitate to go back.

True Mexican food. We were a party of 5 and all ordered different items from the menu. Except for me, everyone liked the food they ordered. I had the chicken enchiladas with the milder, red sauce. The enchiladas were nice and full, three to a plate with rice and beans. But there was a flavor to the red sauce that I can't quite place...I'm usually pretty good about isolating a flavor but this is something I haven't had before and now I know I don't like it. They serve up a hearty plate of food for the price so you definitely get your money's worth. The fajitas were good, sizzling hot steak with onions and peppers and handmade tortillas. The tortillas had a more "wheaty" flavor and a slightly fluffier texture than mass-produced tortillas, which makes them great. One of us ordered the shrimp and garlic but was served a "shrimp Diablo" dish. My friend had no complaints, loving what she was served with the amount of spice she requested. The two guys ordered burritos, one beef and bean and the other carne estada. They were presented with big burritos stuffed with rice, beans and the meat they requested. Again, everyone liked what they ordered. The restaurant is a little building in the middle of a neighborhood. On the Sunday afternoon we were there, a vendor was selling mangos, papaya and pineapple in the lot. It's one of those places that easy to miss and if you are in need true Mexican food, you'll be sorry.

Easy to find and park at this homey family owned joint. As with much of the Mexican food in Omaha on 24th st..don't judge a book by its cover! The outside of the building is a little dated, but the food inside is quite good. The restaurant is very spacious and there are a lot of tables to seat patrons. Also, the menu is quite extensive-there are a lot of choices including your favorites: burritos, torta, enchiladas, tacos, sopes etc. Prices are pretty competitive with the surrounding area, and they do have a complimentary salsa and chips tray which is a plus. I ordered the chicken enchilada plate with verde, and also had a bite of the Carnitas burrito. I thought that the food here was really tasty and pretty much on point with some of my other favorite Mexican taquerias in town. One funny thing is that there's a three beer maximum for every person. I'm guessing that in the past things have gotten a little rowdy!!

These were tasty tacos! I had beef. I was expecting ground beef, lord knows why. Instead what came out was basically steak. Well seasoned, tender with just a hint of crisp which was perfect for me because I like my steak well done (Yes, I'm from Nebraska and I know better... don't judge me lol!) It's authentic as far as I can tell. My server didn't speak English and I don't speak Spanish so ordering was a hodge podge of pointing- including at Yelp pictures! Be patient. When you walk in, seat yourself, someone will come. When you're done, walk up to the counter, someone will come. My only complaint is I didn't get the same awesome salsa platter everyone else has talked about and pictured. But what I did get was good!

  • Jason G.

I've been told numerous times that to find great Mexican food, you need to go to south Omaha, especially anywhere on or close to 24th street...and damned if they all weren't correct...I ordered the huevos and chorizo...it was really really damned good...even the refried beans were great, and how often does that happen...Of course, that wasn't enough, so I ordered a couple of "street" tacos with pork, al pastor style...I normally prefer it carnitas, but they made me a convert...the service was great, and the prices can't be beat...yes, it's in a dodgy area and strip mall...but often, that's where you find hidden gems...I'm extraordinarily glad we came...this is one place that is worth taking a chance on...and as a helpful tip: the menus are in Spanish...actually wasn't a problem, because once I found the egg section I knew what I wanted lol...

I absolutely cannot get enough of their food!! Their tacos are so affordable and SOO GOOD!! Wednesdays/miercoles tacos are 1.35 and sopes 1.75$ hot dog 1.25$ mole con pollo 6.99$ caldo de pollo 5.50$ They have tortas, burritos, sopes, hot dogs, queso, and BOMB NACHOS!!! BEWARE their food is spicy hot! Don't expect to come here and get bland food!! They have Jumex and Mexican bottled sodas- the works. The service is great (but I've only ordered carry out), and the tables are clean. Not just wiped down but actually CLEAN! They have a jukebox and tvs playing the soccer games and novelas ;) I'm from Southern California and you can't get better food in Omaha ESPECIALLY for these prices!

  • Tony F.

We are serious Mexican food fans, and have our existing favorites, so the bar was set high. A previous review noted the all Spanish menus. They have both, so if you need it, ask for the gringo version. As best I could tell, everyone working there speaks perfect English so don't let that intimidate you. We had a random combination of sope, tostada, and tacos. Btw; they do serve beers and certain other adult drinks which we weren't sure about. The food was tasty, served quickly and hot and is very reasonable. Like others we really enjoyed the selection of salsas and chips to go with our meal. If you want to try someplace new and authentic you won't be disappointed.

As a guy from Los Angeles where Spanish speakers (mostly from Mexico) are the majority, you'd think there'd be great, authentic Mexican food on every corner. Perhaps I'm in a rut and I should take as a sign, that it's time to find some better places to eat Mexican since my local place pretty much has old white people eating there. It took me going to El Rancho in Omaha to start anew, my quest for great Mexican food in LA. I found El Rancho on Yelp and I'm glad I did. It's not a glitzy, clean chain place. No, it's a local neighborhood place tucked into a tiny grungy shopping corner. My daughter and I were the only Anglos in the place and I took that as a good sign. The food was delicious. The chips are corn but with a thicker bite to them. Served with 5 salsas, we had fun trying all of them, most of which were flavorful and had kick. I thought I was going to have to order my daughter a pitcher of milk. The meat was flavorful and even the beans and rice were tasty. Our party of 3 had 2 chicken tacos, 2 al pastor tacos, 2 chicken and 2 ground beef enhiladas and a plate of grilled sliced, marinated steak and onions. All of it was delicious. I really liked that red enchilada sauce was no where to be found. Authentic, flavorful and freshly prepared, come to El Rancho if you want quality food from a local mom and pop place without the squeaky clean, sterile atmosphere and instead are ok with families chowing on great grub at cheap prices. El Rancho, I will return. BTW, my daughter and boyfriend have returned 3 more times in about 2 weeks, so, yeah, they love it, too!

Everything we ordered was very bland. Even added loads of salt to give the food some flavor. Will not come back.

Knowing my my prediliction for meats and spicy sauce wrapped in happy jackets of corn, my son asked me if I was going to get tacos on my trip to Omaha and I laughed it off. But after landing, my culinary choices looked a bit...limited (for an important caveat, discovered later, see "The Boiler Room"), so I thought, what the hell, when am I going to be in Omaha again? El Rancho was within a long walk of the hotel, and the cash-only, spanish-only, five salsa thing mentioned in the reviews looked intriguing, so I went for it. Jackpot! Buche, lengua and chorizo; roasted green chili salsa, tomatillo salsa, a red, some weird orange thing, the green mayonaiss-y one and grilled, pickled jalepenos. Plus they take credit now. Don't even think about those Mexican-style places in Old Market, drag yourself out to El Rancho.

I love this place. It came highly recommend by my Mexican boyfriend, and boy was he right. Fair prices, perfect portions, extensive menu, with authentic plates you might not find in most Mexican restaurants in Omaha. Service was warm and timely, not invasive or over the top, subtle. The fluorescent lighting and non-existent decor give this place a dive-y tavern feel, but it just proves time and time again that hole-in-the-wall places are where the good food is hiding. The complimentary chips and salsa include four different kinds of salsa, as well as roasted jalapeno peppers, a nice touch. The salsa verde was insanely spicy, this is not your usual Tex-mex watered down fare. The margaritas were the only b-mol, very generic, and a little expensive, but tasty nonetheless. There were several vegetarian options. I ate about four hours ago and am finding myself craving just another bite. I'll be back, and this time armed with the hunger of about four starving men. Or bears. Or both.

Probably the second best Mexican food I've had in Omaha since moving here two years ago...behind Rivera's. However, Rivera's is (incredibly) loud, somewhat expensive and on the other side of town, so El Rancho will probably be the de facto choice for me and my wife for awhile. We joined two other couples at 7:30 on a Wednesday night. The place seemed kinda divey, but it was fairly clean and quiet and our waiter was very pleasant. Other reviewers have mentioned the bevy of complimentary salsas, and being a sauce lover I was immediately impressed. All colors and textures were represented. We didn't ask our waiter what was what, but two sauces in particular were extremely hot, so if you're sensitive to that, ask. I ordered a Pork Chile Verde, which in all honesty was a tad on the bland side. However, the meat was very tender, so I just loaded my tortilla with a different sauce every time and I was on the coche to Flavortown. The corn tortillas are hands down the best I've ever had, they're large, and you get four per order. My wife got the Chicken Flautas and unfortunately they looked and tasted like the bagged frozen variety from the grocery store. Others in our party got the beef fajitas which apparently were excellent, and a brave soul even got the goat, which he quite liked. We will definitely be back to get some tacos!

Finally found a great Mexican restaurant here in Omaha. My buddy and I saw it driving by and after seeing the Yelp on it, went back and stopped in. The penta-salsa was tasty. I had chicken enchiladas with rice and a couple of asada tacos and my friend had the chorizo burrito and 3 tongue tacos and we both agreed that we had found happiness. Add a coke and the bill was only $25. Top of the list for Mexican food in Omaha for me now.

The other folks must have had a much better experience than my husband and I. The place was nice inside. Waitress never brought chips/salsa but the hostess finally saw our predicament and gave us some. My husband ordered a plate that had some of everything: an enchilada, chile relleno, chalupa, tamale, taco, and rice and beans. He ended up getting a chile relleno, tamale and chalupa. Waitress brought second plate with another chalupa, relleno, and a taco. We commented and she took it back. She brought more food, but again not what we ordered. He never got the rice and beans. I order a combo with a relleno, taco, and enchilada. I got the enchilada, but it was beef and not chicken as ordered. The relleno was there, but no taco. Later she brought one hard shell taco (we both ordered tacos, and soft corn), another relleno and apologized, blaming the cook staff. It was NOT busy that night. A group of 6-7 people came in after us and there orders were all wrong as well. Waitress was out-of-it. Others were trying to help her and another waitress finally brought our check. I had a "small" margarita which was huge and potent, so I was mellow about it all. There were no choices of salsa as other raters mentioned, just one (which was good). All-in-all the food was typical Mexican for this part of the country; nothing to write home about. (Wish I could find a relleno that is crisp fried and not soggy here). At one point, someone in the back was having a birthday and the waiters/waitresses all went back there clapping and singing. I noted to my husband that they were celebrating that someone finally got an order right! (We wish we could have tried the soft corn tacos as they are not easy to find around here. We won't be back to try, unfortunately).

For downtowners, good authentic mexican food is a bust. El Rancho was a nice find for me this weekend because it is so close to home and pretty decent. Good quality food. Awesome table salsas, those alone warrant five stars. Super cheap. One torta, two bean tostadas, five tacos al pastor, one beer, one coke (in a glass bottle please) took me back a whole $22.00. Not kidding. I will be back soon.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
