Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

"There's a reason it's #1 in Norfolk" Actually there are more. The service is great. Friendly and quick. The food is excellent. A few speak to it being bland for Mexican. If you prefer it spiced up some, just ask, they'll do it for you. The basics are all here. It's authentic stuff and it's tasty. We went twice last week on our visit to Norfolk. The Chicken Fajita Salad was GREAT and so was the Fish and Chips. Best of all, El Mescal won't rip every buck outta your wallet or purse. Visited May 2014

I really had high hopes, after my husband said he'd had some great meals here. It was OK. The white cheese dip was so runny, you could hardly eat it without dripping it all over. The fajita steak meat was pretty bland, the Peach margarita bright orange and tart- no real peaches here, that's for sure....and the service was just okay. The higher points? I had a Sangria that was DELICIOUS and the Steak burrito is HUGE! It was literally about 6 inches wide and took up an entire oval-shaped plate in the length. The two hungry guys with me, could only finish half of theirs. I had a steak chimi which wasn't too bad either- next time I'll try something else. Let's be honest, dining options in Norfolk are a little slimmer, so I'm sure I'll be back. Overall it was an average experience, and much better than Michael's as well as a good change of pace.

Good Mexican food, always enjoy dining there when I'm in the area. I usually get the Taco and Enchilada combo plate with beans and rice. Nice, simple and delicious.

The food is Amazing! But the customer service is terrible. If you don't mind waiting the place is great. That was my first experience. My second encounter my co-workers and I arrived 20 minutes early and they wouldn't even let us sit down. I even spoke with the owner and he said there was no exception. The door shouldn't have even been open. I'm all about customer service and the owner was broader line rude. Outside of that the food is great. I would recommend asking for the salsa they hide in the back. It's really good.

I have eaten here a few times now. The service is always friendly and attentive. The food is good... not great, but good. Fajitas I had a long time ago were okay. Last night though, there were the chiles verde. Pork carnitas chopped down in size and swimming in spicy warm green sauce. Lots of Mexican places have this dish. Most are pretty good, and this was no exception. So I would assume the carnitas and chiles colorado would also be good here.

We eat at El Mezcal 2-3 times a month and they have consistently great food, service and cleanliness. Not to mention the very best margaritas we have had anywhere. We love the guacamole Mexicano, white cheese sauce with the chips. My husband always loves the carnitas and anything I order with seafood is full of shrimp, etc. We always have enough for another meal. They have great drink specials and go out of their way to make you feel welcome and like family. Rene the manager is the friendliest guy around and always greets you with a handshake. Hands down it is our favorite place to dine I. The Niorfolk area and our out of town guests are always treated to a meal there when they visit. Give it a try and you won't be sorry!

This restaurant is ok. Generally the wait time is very limited but can be a little long depending on what time of day one chooses to go. I was pleased with the amount of time it took to greet, get drinks and bring chips to our table. I think one thing wait staff may need to work on is making their presence known more. When the food came out you could tell mine was undercooked as the cheese was still ice cold and unmelted inside of the enchilada. The kids hamburger? Massive. I'm talking too big for me and I'm adult! You can't complain you don't get your money's worth here!! Staff also loves cleaning tables. If you are alone or with a small child and need to use the bathroom don't count on telling the wait staff you're not done and will be right back. In the time it took my son to pee and wash his hands our table had been completely cleared and cleaned. 3-4 minutes at most after telling the girl "we are going to the bathroom, we are not done" Compensation was not offered for the loss of our meal and we had to pay in full. I also hope that the staff realizes some of us "gringas" do speak Spanish fluently and know exactly how you feel about your job. All in all I will probably look around for another restaurant but a one time experience probably won't stop me from returning to this restaurant.

El Mezcal is by far the best Mexican restaurant I've ever visited. They always have great tasting food, extremely fast service, and great staff as well. You will never wait more than 8-10 minutes for your meal to be ready after you order it. I highly recommend ordering the white cheese dip in addition to the salsa that they bring you with the chips. It's delicious and just the right spiciness for my liking. I think the previous reviewer is correct on it being a family-run business, and they definitely do a great job.

El Mezcal is average. I've been disappointed by the lack of flavor and creativity in many dishes. The hosts and staff are great though. They are very friendly and the food comes out pretty fast. I enjoy the free chips and salsa before meals. There are far better options for mexican food in Norfolk though, especially for "authentic" mexican food.
(3)Shaun S.
Pretty good authentic Mexican food. Variety of dishes to choose from, including vegetarian ones, friendly and efficient staff, all at a reasonable price. Couldn't give it anymore stars only because I've lived in the American Southwest and therefore become a Mexican food elitist :)

A 'just-fine' mexican meal. The chips were fresh. Chicken chimichanga had a good amt of moist chicken in it. But the chimi was not made fresh. It took maybe three minutes, at most, to get my meal after placing my order. So there is no way they could have prepared my dish fresh in that amount of time. It did taste ok though. Very pleasant and attentive service by all. I would choose to go there again if in the mood for mexican while visiting Norfolk.

For Norfolk, this as good as it gets! The service was exceptional! The waiter/waitress was very attentive and super quick despite having a full restaurant. The hostess was friendly and nice. It appeared to me that this was family-run, and you can tell that they take pride in their business. The restaurant was very clean and clutter free. The food was great! It was surprising authentic Mexican food. with small American influences. And most importantly, the margaritas were awesome!! They have a margarita special on some days, so make sure you ask before you order. On the day that I went, all lime margaritas were $1.50!! If I every have to go back to Norfolk, this is the one place that I would definitely revisit.

Great Mexican food. Great service. A definite must stop. Not only best Mexican food in Norfolk but best resturant in Norfolk. The only one better was double k and there not around anymore.
