Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

I was there to try the margaritas, specifically the blue margarita, by recommendation of the waiter. Not sure what flavor they were going for, but it just tasted like tequila. I asked for salt around the rim, they gave me sugar. Raspberry peach was much better tasting. The food was average tasting with big portion sizes. I feel overall everything was over-priced. The margaritas were $5 each and in small margarita glasses. I don't plan to go there any time soon.

I like picking up a treat or two at the shop in the same location (Mexican Coke, mazapán candies, etc.), and I do eat at the restaurant every so often. The menu is extensive, but in my experience the quality is hit-and-miss. I think the burrito de chile verde is pretty good. Not world-beating, but definitely good. Their margaritas are rather large and very alcoholic, which can make this a fun place to go for drinks. The Morales family owns several restaurants in Lincoln -- El Toro, Mazatlán, Las Margaritas, and I think one other, as well as this one. The menu and quality seems about the same in each.

Enjoyed the Burrito Colorado and the $2.50 Margaritas Monday night.

This restaurant is attached to a mexican market. Don't let this fool you. The food was delicious and large portions. They offer a mix of Tex Mex or authentic mexican dishes. Shredded beef burrito had zero fat with nice spices. We were the only people there after the lunch crowd had left, so the waiter (Fernando) was very attentive and friendly. Give this place a try and you won't be disappointed.

Best Mexican food in Lincoln. You have to walk through a supermarket to get to the restaurant, so you know it's authentic. Enchiladas here are awesome.

Okay, I never write reviews, but I need to hand it to La Mexicana. Having lived in Mexico, I can tell you that this is legit. Skip the tex-mex menu items and order tacos al pastor or tacos with chorizo. So tasty and cheap!

To be honest, when I arrived at this place, I was skeptical. You have to walk through the semi cramped grocery store to the back where the restaurant is. I was pleasantly surprise that there was a nice cozy ambiance. The food tasted really good (I got a chicken enchilada) and there was not a huge wait for it to come out. I would recommend it to anyone looking for Mexican food that doesn't come from Taco Bell, Taco John's, and the like.

This is where it's at. Another is el. Chaparro. I mean this is home cookin' for sure. Free chips and salsa is a plus. Their horchata is not as good as El Chaparro, by far.

The service was great and friendly. Went with the pork chili verde burrito. It had good flavor. And the portion was large. Chips and salsa also great. They gave us mild and medium heat. The medium was very good. Will retun again.

Pretty decent Mexican fare. The portions are filling for the money, and fairly cheap. Their food is fairly authentic, but let's be honest, with no disrespect meant towards the good city of Lincoln, it's not what you'd get at a *legit* place. But it is good, so not to knock their cooking too much. Their margaritas are delicious, and their happy hour deal of $2.50 isn't terrible. Their beer selection is pretty scant though. When I first ate here, like two years back, I noticed that they didn't have one of God's gifts to Humankind on their menu: the mortal's ambrosia known as Horchata. This is easily my favorite non-alcoholic, non-carbonated drink, and damn me if I was leaving a Mexican establishment without enough Horchata to give me diabetes. So I asked one of the servers if they could by chance make some, figuring it couldn't hurt to ask. Sure enough the dude was nice enough to fix some up! The cool thing about Horchata is that it's pretty hard to screw up, as I've eaten at several places and never had a bad experience. So that earned them instant points.

Not authentic. Food was average at best.

Good service, fun, right by the journalism school. All pluses. I love the salsa here. It has great flavors, is fresh and has a perfect consistency. I usually get some to go. The bistec a la tampiquena is great. Margaritas are yum and cheap.

Love this place! Food is great and consistent and the margaritas are the perfect cure to a long stressful day. Staff is friendly and the service is above par.

I don't know why people are always dogging on Tex Mex cuisine. I am a lover of authentic Mexican dishes, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy Tex Mex for what it is. I think Tex Mex food is a wonderful example of two cultures of North America coming together and making something delicious and different. La Mexicana serves up some great Tex Mex food, and if you dig a bit deeper in the menu you can find authentic Mexican food. They serve ceviche on the weekends, you can get a traditional Mexican taco, Menudo soup, and many kinds of non-traditional meat (pig stomach, cow tongue etc) just to name a few. I think the Morales family restaurants in town have done a great job incorporating Tex Mex and traditional Mexican dishes on their menus to serve all sorts of appetites. Add to that fast, friendly, efficient and genuine servers and you've got a pretty damn good local group of restaurants.

Highly recommend this Mexican restaurant! Mon - Wed cheap margaritas that will blow your mind. Also the food is great! Try the burritos. When I leave Lincoln, this will one of the few places I do miss.

Wonderfully authentic. Delicious right down to the beans.

Muy authentico. This restaurant is attached to a Mexican grocer. The staff doesn't speak much English, but they always know what I am asking for. Margaritas are $2.99 on M-W and they are huge, just like the portions of delicious Mexican food. For a more authentic taste, you can enjoy lots of specialty meats (think tripe, cabeza, etc.) They also have ceviche on Sundays, though I'm not sure I'd want to eat raw fish in Nebraska. Open until 9 p.m.

I was born in Mexico but moved to Chicago a few years ago. I moved to Lincoln about a month ago to live the "good life" Ok, no, not really. Anyway, while in the Windy City, I visited tons of so called "authentic" Mexican restaurants, some good, some bad. No biggie. So imagine my surprise when I moved to Lincoln and I found a Mexican market, La Mexicana. I felt at home almost immediately. Hell, I even bought some of the gorditas placed in a basket near the register. I must admit they were a bit pricey considering that I used to pay the same price for a dozen of tamales outside a similar place in Chicago. Nevertheless, they were tasty. Thus, I figured I'd try the restaurant side of the market. The menu was extensive and the portions huge. However, the food was anything but authentic and anything but flavorful. I think taco bell actually wins this one. I ordered the tacos al carbon and the pozole. The tacos came with the standard portion of rice and beans, only the beans were dried and buried in a mountain of cheese, i could hardly see them. The small side of guacamole was brown and tasteless. I managed to eat 1 1/2 tacos. Then the pozole came. It was nothing but a huge bowl of semi-cooked hominy and bone-in chunks of meat submerged in boiling water with no seasoning and no flavor. I left dissappointed. However, I was willing to give its sister restaurant a chance. So on to the Margaritas I went a few weeks later. The setting was nicer but the menu was the same minus the pozole and menudo soups. Different place, same horrible food. I gave one star to this chain of so called authentic Mexican food but only because of its consistency in bad food. Oh, and what's with mushrooms in most of the dishes? That alone is not Mexican.

I agree with Norm. The market is great and extensive--a must-see in Lincoln. But the restaurant food is greasy, Kraft cheese-doused Tex Mex. I don't know in what universe people consider this authentic unless they mean authentic Nebraskan. If you like Americanized Mexican food it might be the place for you, but if you're looking for authentic food don't bother.

La Mex is our go-to Mexican restaurant. The waiters are terrific and no-nonsense. The Abram's margaritas are the best in town. If I'm hungry, I get a burrito: half tongue and half beef check. If I'm not so hungry, I get 3 authentic tacos: 2 of cheek (cabeza) and 1 of tongue. You can't beat it.

Not the best mexican in lincoln but darn close. I dont know what authentic really means but its just good food and great service. Plus the mercado atmosphere is fun. All of the Morales' families eateries are good and all of have exceptional service for lincoln. If your gonna sit down for mexican in lincoln skip the fastfood joints, its worth it.
