Like a beacon in the night, we made a bee-line for the pink neon "GRANPA'S" on our 600 plus mile last day to Omaha or bust roadtrip last October. Huge parking lot, huge dining rooms, one for smokers (!), two bars (one for smokers :) California was still clinging to us mightily, or was it the other way around? Dinner was fine, I had a steak and salad bar. My husband ordered chicken. Nothing out of the ordinary, old-fashioned dining room presentation with boiled veggies and mashed potato. Steak was way better than I was used to, but normal for Nebraska :) Service was adequate. It was relatively late when we got there, we were practically alone, but there was a long wait for our main course, so I wonder what is up with that. We were just fueling up for the final push to Omaha, so this was a good stop for us. Luckily, I did not know what a Runza was yet.

I ate here with a group of co-workers while in Kearney for a conference. I am not usually one to write negative reviews - if I don't have a good experience at a place I tend to just keep my mouth shut and skip writing a review altogether. However, I feel that I need to warn people about this place... We had the absolute worst service that I have ever had at a restaurant. The waitress clearly did not want to be there, and actually snapped at one of my colleagues when we asked about splitting up the check! In addition to the snapping, she basically ignored us the whole time we were eating - we only saw her when she took our order and when we paid. The food is not terrible (although my hamburger arrived cold), but I wouldn't say that it is worth what they charge for it. Food is on-par with something like an Applebees or maybe a Friday's, but costs nearly twice as much. If you are in Kearney and need a place to eat, avoid this one.

This restaurant had terrible service, terrible food. They forgot half our order, then made racist comments!!! I would recommend finding another food establishment.....

Grandpa's Steakhouse is a landmark in Kearney, a good old-fashioned steak & potato joint. This is not a chain; it's been owned and run by the same family over several generations. Good place for a strong drink and a big slab of meat, a typical local steakhouse in every way that's positive.

Surprisingly nice little place tucked away in a small Nebraska town. Old circa 1950's steakhouse decor with Sinatra photos all over the place - as well as constant Frank music playing softly in the background. The food was good. All in all, to this New York City resident, it was a pleasant experience.

We were looking for a good sirloin and were not disappointed. Salad bar was ok. House Cabernet was good. Service was a little slow but we were in no rush. We will eat here again when in Kearney.

Their brunch isn't bad, but the dinner wait is usually longer than 'it's worth... :(

This place is OK, but way overrated. Around here people seem to think that it's the pinnacle of fine dining, and really it's nowhere close. Both the food and the wine are mediocre and overpriced. The atmosphere is unique, and if your server is in the mood, the service can be good. About the best thing to note, though, is that it has a good salad bar. Not great (e.g., iceberg lettuce), but good (e.g., rye croutons that may well be made on the premises). All in all, I'd consider it quite a good restaurant if it weren't so stodgy and overpriced. But never would I consider it great. For that, go back across the interstate and eat at Venue.
