Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Very close to I-80. Great place to stop when driving across Nebraska. Service was good and food was very tasty.

Just had dinner there, passing through on our way home from our charity tour across the country,... rockinghorseguy.com I was born in San Bernardino, CA, and grew up near Los Angeles, and go to Mexico on a regular basis, so I DO know Mexican food. In California, I wouldn't go to this restaurant. I'm used to more flavor in the enchilada and relleno sauce. But for being tired and hungry in the middle of Nebraska, this dinner made me very happy. The Nachos De Maguey were VERY good, with lots of beef and chicken. If I come back to Kearney, I'll come back to El Meguey.

Great service and damn good food made quickly. The margarita was a bit weak for the price. I had the carnitas plate and it rocked. I highly recommend this joint

Wish I could offer insight on more than one menu item, but when they make such a good beef chimichanga, why would I order something else? Service is always quick at lunch, too!

Adequate, fast, and not overly priced. We ordered the special (two combination plates, with the second one 50% off), and spent $20 (including a generous tip). Service was quick and staff was friendly. The food was pretty boring, though. Granted, I'm a little bit of a Mexican food "snob", after living in the southwest for 20 years.

Average. If you are in a hurry passing through and no time to find another place, this one will do. Food was average, but staff was very helpful and friendly.

We had a very pleasant dinner at El Maguey. Service was friendly and skillful. The food was prepared for the Great Plains palate, with seasoning levels rather low. However, I enjoyed the chicken/steak fajitas, and my companion liked her taco salad. She also liked the chocochimi for dessert - very rich and chocolatey. They have a drive-through, making call-ahead take-out very easy.

I have yet to have a bad meal or service at El Maguey...the fajita taco salad, the chimichanga del Maguey and the .99 cent margaritas on Fridays are some of my favorites. The service has always been outstanding and the value of what you get for what you pay is fantastic. I like to eat and I've never left El Maguey hungry. Definitely our favorite Mexican restaurant in Kearney

Great service, and the food had a very unique original flavor. The taco salad is truly a taco salad with overtones of celentro and lime. Worth your time.

We have lunch here, maybe once per month. Always good Mex chow, and they gladly grill fresh jalapenos, as requested. Today..same. Just right service. Thanks folks. Well done again.

I normally try to eat something interesting when traveling long distances. Normally Mexican food fits that bill. I guess I have been lucky until now as most of the Mexican restaurants I have tried were good, family run, and provided great food made with pride. I did not find this to be true at El Miguey. The relleno I had was made with a substandard chile to begin with; so the resulting relleno was poor. I did not expect Hatch Chile's but I certainly did not expect an inedible relleno either. My wife's steak fajitas were over cooked and dry. Her flour tortillas were heated on an oily grill which left grill grit on them in addition to being oily. The veggies were destroyed as well. Either it was a bad day in the kitchen or they just don't care how the food is prepared. It would have been better if we had eaten at Taco Bell in spite of the mediocre food?

We frequently stop for the night in Kearney as it is about halfway between our home and our family in the Midwest. On our most recent trip we decided to look for a Mexican restaurant when we got into town and found El Maguay, thank goodness! We will absolutely make this part of our stay from now on. The service was fast and friendly and the food was so good from the soups to the salads and the tacos. Their refried beans were tasty and the pre-meal salsa/chips were excellent. Our deserts (churros, tres leche cake, and fried ice cream) were muy delicioso as well. And, joy of joys, we were there on a Wednesday so we were able to enjoy 89¢ margaritas. EIGHTY-NINE CENT MARGARITAS!!! What better way to erase the trials of a day spent on I-80 across Nebraska?

The food was average and the service was less than average. I was just passing through, but if I lived nearby, I wouldn't return. (unless every other Mexican place was worse).

Love this place!! Taco salad's are the best in town and margaritas are cheap and delicious! Always like to take my family here when they visit from out of town.

Great stop on our trip on I-80 for a quick, yummy Mexican lunch. Service was great, they were prompt and friendly. Food came out in less than ten minutes. Lunch portions were perfectly sized, we both ate everything on our plates!! Would stop here again for sure if traveling through. P.s. Husband didn't like the cheese dip/ he thought it was too watery. I liked it:)

Hands down the best Mexican joint in town. Best Mexican I've ever had? No, not by a long shot, but I've been to numerous places in Arizona and Mexico so it's kind of hard to compare. However, everything I've had here is fantastic. The food is great, the prices are great, and the portions are great. Definitely worth a stop!

I got the lunch huevos con chorizo. It was delicious. A few spots tasted a little burnt, but not bad. Service seems pretty quick; however I did come for a late lunch. The total with my ice tea was $8.22. I would spend almost this much at a fast food restaurant. I would recommend El Maguey to anyone who likes more traditional Mexican fare. Also looks like they run daily specials. Plus they have a full bar. I don't think you'll be disappointed eating here!!

Very clean, decor is lovely and service is super friendly. No complaints about the food. It was okay and resonable. We have had better, but have also had much much worse. We would give this place another chance.

We loved this place. The food was great, it was reasonably priced, and the service was super nice. We have 3 kids, including a baby that makes a huge mess, and our server just laughed when we apologized, and said "Don't worry about it. I have 3 kids." A big step above most restaurants right off the I-80 corridor. I would so rather eat somewhere like this than a chain. The only thing was that when we google-mapped the address (based on the one awesome yelp review) it sent us to the wrong place. Just head down the main strip at the Kearney exit, and it is a few blocks on your left.

I feel like I've become the expert (with the help of other Yelpers) on small. local Mexican places. I was searching on Yelp for a lunch place as we drove through NE. We got off the interstate and because we couldn't park (we travel with a 42' trailer) at the place I had picked we took a chance on El Maguey. It was great! The first thing I noticed was that it was clean, as were the bathrooms. The service was excellent, the food very good and my iced tea was never empty. I had to add this place to Yelp so all of you driving through the middle of nowhere NE on I-80 can stop at a decent place.

AMAZING!!! I never bother writing reviews of anything, but this restaurant was so amazing I just had to spend the extra time writing one. Being from Chicago, I've eaten my fair share of delicious authentic mexican food, and have grown used to the sad fact that there are a relatively small amount of places around the US where you can find that and not some tex mex stuff that's smothered in fake stadium-type nacho sauce. I certainly never expected to find authentic mexican deliciousness in the middle of Nebraska! EVERYTHING the three of us ordered was absolutely mouth watering, so I imagine you can't go wrong with anything that you order. However, if they have the (chicken) tortilla soup, BE SURE TO ORDER THAT in addition to whatever else. It was so delicious, and you can tell that they start with homemade broth, which really makes all the difference. I would personally pay an arm and a leg for food this good, but I certainly didn't have to. The prices were so reasonable not even factoring in the amount of food you got for your money. I would gladly go out of my way on any trip to go and eat here again and can't wait to return!
