Like many of the previous reviewers I too like to support local business & really try & avoid chains or fast food. I was happy to come across a small BBQ joint in ND (you don't hear much about great BBQ coming out of ND) so I went in with my expectations low. Maybe even cautious or judging on a sliding scale as a previous post might suggest but I have to be honest my co-worker & I were both totally shocked! Maybe we went on a good day but I really can't agree with the comments about lack of smoke or spice. At the time we were there they were smoking & the place was filled with that great smoky haze that you experience at a good BBQ joint. I know some of y'all might be thinking I don't know what the hell I'm talking about but I assure you I do. I am a huge BBQ fan have a smoker at home that I'm putting to use on a regular basis & (here's the biggie) when I was a teenager, 3 decades ago, I used to wash dishes at the Red Chimney in Carlsbad NM which , in my opinion is still some of the finest BBQ I have ever eaten & Danny Fowler (Owner) was a legendary Pit Master! Enough with the advertisement for them (unless they want to kick me down some $). In summary I was totally impressed by the food at R Rooster, it's a little pricey but there is an oil field boom going on & I have eaten far worse overpriced crap while I was in the area(we paid $9 for an abortion called a "Burgerita" in Watford City)! The atmosphere is what I'd expect at a small town joint, our server was totally nice & offered her recommendations on items. You could tell that she definitely has tried all the food & knew the menu. So next time I'm in Williston I will definitely be returning to R Rooster & just remember it beats the hell out of fighting for a table down at Applebees! I know, if you're still reading, you know what I'm talking about! Haha happy eating!

I was looking for anything with a personality in downtown Williston which is nearly impossible. The chains dominate this landscape like the oil rigs on the range. I enjoyed my meal and concur with the opinions here that there wasn't much smoke or spice to the meat. I had a simple pulled pork which was much better given the good tasting BBQ sauce on the table. I happened to really think the atmosphere was very appropriate and enjoyable. Price was extremely high though for the product. All and all, no choices leaves little option if you want to patronize downtown local restaurants which is what I always aim to do. I'd go back again, but I'll make sure I am on an expense account.

This is about as good as it gets for BBQ in Williston- but thats not saying much. I had the brisket sandwich with coleslaw and baked beans. The brisket didn't have much of a smoke flavor and was pulled rather than sliced as I'm used to down south. The slaw and beans were decent but again, not very impressive. The biggest issue I had was the sauce which tasted like a doctored-up version of KC Masterpiece. The spicy sauce just tasted like they added a little heat to the original sauce. My coworker had the ribs and his opinion of the food was the same as mine. Overall this place just didn't impress me. The food wasn't bad but it just lacked any real bold flavors. I've had BBQ throughout the Southern U.S. and this just doesn't stack up. I'd return again simply because I miss BBQ so much when I'm away from home. If this town wasn't overrun with oilfield workers right now, I have a feeling this place wouldn't last.

The place was freezing (everyone was bundled in their heavy winter coats), we felt like we needed to eat as fast as possible just so we could get back in our warm car. Soda was sold by the can which is never a good idea at a restaurant unless you are in a foreign country with bad water. The mashed potatoes were instant (ewww) and served in a styrofoam ramekin that could only hold a max of 3 tablespoons. The beans were also a 3 tablespoon portion (or less). The ribs were the worst ribs I have ever had, and I've had a lot of ribs growing up in Kansas City. The ribs tasted like cardboard and the only way I could eat them was drench them in sauce. The brisket tasted fine but was about 1/3 fat. The corn bread was good, not sweet cornbread if that's your style. They were out of smoked prime rib, out of mashed potatoes (after our meal), and out of straws. I didn't mind the sauce as some other reviewers mentioned. We spent 35 dollars on two meals (before tip) BUT they were kids menu portions... So definitely over priced we left starving. The wait staff was friendly.

even with a few bad reviews I stopped in to try this place out. had the brisket plate with the corn bread and mash. over all really good smoke flavor and with a little BBQ sauce tasted nice. good portion of meat. I should have had two pieces of the corn bread and skipped the mash

I should have sensed a problem when I didn't smell smoke as I walked up. Not great, not bad. The sliced beef had no smokiness to it. And it was more pulled than sliced. The polish sausage was weird. It was spicy, greasy, and kinda mealy. If I lived here, I wouldn't be a regular.

I am rating things on a sliding scale for Williston. In most towns this restaurant would probably not do so well. HOWEVER, in Williston this is one of the best places to eat. It's hit or miss with the staff, sometimes they're really nice and sometimes they hardly speak a word to you. Their sides are pretty good, but as others have pointed out the meat isn't what you'd expect from your normal BBQ joint. That being said, if you're looking for a place to eat out in Williston this is one of the better places.

Good brisket and pulled pork. Beverages come in cans not fountain. Not really a true barbecue place but still tasty

The actual location is pretty small, only a few tables. The atmosphere is nice considering the Boomtown vibe. I usually order to-go and I've never been disappointed. I always order the pulled pork sandwich, but I can't say enough about the cornbread. It's a very welcome change for Williston to offer good food AND good service.

This place caught my attention while walking to and from the movies. The smoke filled the air and pulled me inside while I was on my way back to my car. I ordered ribs, beans and cole slaw. The food was average at best (nothing to complain about or come back for), but the service was outstanding. The lady inside was very sweet and very attentive. I may come back if I attend another movie and haven't stuffed myself on popcorn.

In all my years of eating at restaurants, this is by far the worst treatment and service I have ever gotten. it was a beautiful day and I wanted to eat outside. the waitress gave me a dirty look when i asked her if I could eat outside but she was cool with it. I ordered promptly and she (by the way the were out of pork ribs). so I just ordered the polish dog. she brought the hot dog back and asked if I wanted ketchup and mustard, and when said yes, she was kind of again, not so cool with going all the back into the restaurant to fetch the ketchup and mustard. She brought the ketchup and mustard back. And I apologized to her for making her walk back and forth. she then took it upon herself to sit down and speak with me. we had this pleasant conversation for about 5 minutes although. She left, I finished my food, which the 10 dollar polish dog was nasty, but the cole slaw and beans were really good. Then, this big old burly lady came out and asked me if I was finished. I'm like yeah and I whipped out my American Express card, the one with the $100,000 dollar limit. She returned with her iPad mini with square trade. I said I'm not really comfortable with that and that I'll pay her cash. I'm sorry, I'm not putting my personal data on your iPad. square trade does not have the same level of protection as a a standard Visa card reader. She completely started going off on me and using a loud tone. she demanded that I come inside and get my change. I went inside and got my change, then she barked at me to never come back in here again. I said something back. Do you know what she said to me? She said that she has a "9 mm in the back" and for me to get out of here. This person is obviously disturbed. i recommend, unless your a biker, to steer clear of this place. And pay with cash. She called me a "little man" because I wouldn't use square trade and wanted to be treated with respect. where I'm from, when the waitress seats you, they bring the bill to your table at the end and then the slip. I'm sorry for not being aware of your procedures. I just got into this town and this is how I'm treated. My fathers company has sold 100's of millions of dollars of control valves in your wells. But whatever.

Meat didn't have smoke or spice. Sides were good. I ordered the two meat plate, brisket and pork ribs; my sides were Mac n cheese and BBQ beans. The brisket or ribs didn't have a smoke ring and we're very very lightly seasoned. I would say they cook everything in an oven with some water and liquid smoke in the pan. The real insult was the portions, three slices of brisket and three pork ribs, all for $27.00 with tax and 15% tip. I won't be back.

So we came in hangry, and left hungry and angry. I don't know if it happened to be the time we went or what it was, but it was not edible. I ordered rib and they came out looking like jerky with BBQ sauce spread on. In fact I would have preferred BBQ jerky over what we got. I can't even say I would give them a second chance. It wasn't just our ribs it was everything that came with it as well. Uncooked cornbread, mash potatoes that came out of a box with added skins to make them look good, but we all know the saying "you can't judge a book by its cover." Gross to say the least. I know there is slim pickings in williston for BBQ, but don't go here. I recommend Famous Dave's.
