Only Big Boy of its kind! If you've ever been to a different Big Boy, you'll understand and appreciate this place for all its glory. They basically have the name and decided to make whatever they wanted, and they're menu selection was spot on. Must get: -pizza burger -hot n tot -fries with gravy -brown or purple cows Hidden gem for fast food and a must do when visiting.

This was my first experience at a Big Boy Restaurant. In fact, the only reason that I even know of big boy is because of a scene out of an Austin Powers movie! I learned a few things while I was there: 1. This place is drive through only. I parked, but a sign on the back of the building tells you that there's "no backdoor service." There's a big parking lot which apparently is where you park and eat your food. Not ideal in my opinion, but I guess that's part of the experience. 2. According to the staff, they are most famous for pizza burgers (flying style), fries + gravy, and frozen coke (coke slurpie). Naturally, this is what I ordered. The pizza burger basically a burger patty + pizza sauce + onions + cheese inside of flattened white bread. Consider ordering the double burger otherwise the bread:burger ratio is a bit higher than it should be. The fries + gravy were good, but it's hard for deep fried potatoes with country gravy to be bad. The frozen coke was exactly like a coca-cola slurpie from 7-11. After hearing such rave reviews about this place, I was a bit disappointed. Overall, it was still good and I'm glad I stopped by - but it's probably not a place that I'll have to visit every single time that I come through town. It's definitely worth a try at least once though!

I love the flying style pizza burgers! I'm from California and they don't have this fast food chain where I'm from but I wish they did!

Good, classic drive-thru restaurant. Thought I would get a little more for what I paid for, but hey, we're in a tough economy. I guess.

I've been coming to Big Boy since before most of you were born. Hell, it'd probably be fair to say that I've been coming here since before some of your parents were even born! Looking for elegant, fancy food? Better do like Pantera says, and, "Walk on home, boy!". Want to sit at a table and have the daily specials read to you by some waitress? Better hope that your car has comfy seats, and that you can read a 20-foot tall menu board on your own, because that ain't happening either! The Big Boy in Bismarck hails from a different time, and that's part of its charm. Even during their slow times of the day, expect to wait a couple of minutes before you even get up to a microphone to place your order. If you're really lucky, you won't be sitting on the train tracks, or blocking traffic on Main Ave, but it can happen! You can't go wrong with their Fried Chicken, Mashed Potatoes w/ Gravy, and Buns, but there's one meal here that will keep me coming back until the day I die: Flying-Style Pizza Burgers, Fries w/ Gravy, and a large Hot-N-Tot (Coca-Cola with cinnamon oil)! This place celebrated its 60th Anniversary in 2014, and it's as popular now as it was all those years ago! The people who own/manage/work at the Big Boy know that they are a part of something special, and it truly is! The Big Boy will continue to be an institution in Bismarck long after they've chucked my body in the dirt, and that puts a big ol' smile on my face! That, and the fact that I get to stop there on my way back to Fargo tomorrow! ;)

was here on business recently... ordered what everyone recommended based on other reviews... it was ok... the line was so long it blocked a lane of traffic... moved fairly quickly... food was pretty good for north dakota... lol (i'm sorry if i offend anyone but seriously... yikes)... the lady at the window was in too big of a hurry to really be nice.. she slammed the window in my face twice with a loud "HAVE A NICE DAY"... really irritating but i get it, they're in a hurry... made the mistake of ordering a large fry... medium is ok... large is massive and costs 7 bucks... my review for the food is strictly based on comparing it to the other food i ate while there... it was toward the top of the list... wouldn't even be in my top 10 back home though...

My favorite place to eat in Bismarck. I always plan at least one stop here when I'm in town visiting family. Here's what you order: pizza burger flying style, fries, and a Hot 'n' Tot to drink (Coke with cinnamon syrup). You won't be sorry! One caveat: the drive-through gets really backed up at dinner time, so plan for that. Don't let it scare you off though, the line moves really fast.

Fat boy This is what they'd say 'Cause I'd eat burgers all day If Big Boy gets me back again That boy Lives so close to you But oh, what I would do If this boy Gets Big Boy again Oh, and this boy would be happy with a Super and a fry But Bismarck is so far now that all he does is cry This boy Eats burgers through the pain But it won't be the same Till Big Boy gets me back again Big Boy Big Boy ====== Overall, 7/10. (My apologies to John)

Definitely different. I was expecting portions to be larger given the name of the place but otherwise, this place is good. I have tried the famous pizza burger flying style and that was fun and I have had their Sunday fried chicken special. Worth trying out. Their normal burgers are pretty lousy.

Big Boy does fast food EXACTLY how it's supposed to be done. It doesn't pretend to be healthy or have 'slim options' because they'd go against everything Big Boy stands for. What does it stand for, you ask? It stands for delicious, American-ized fried food. It stands for 2 days worth of sodium intake in one meal. It stands for being way too full after you're done eating but the smell of the empty bag makes you want to eat more and more. Seriously, Big Boy is delicious. Their flying-style pizza burgers are ridiculous. Get the side of gravy with your fries.. it's so worth it (you shouldn't be watching calories or fat content if you're in this drive-through, anyway). Have I made the point yet that Big Boy may lead to heart palpitations but they'll be worth it? I'm really trying to stress that here. P.S. As a public health employee, I must add: Don't eat Big Boy often! But when you do.. just enjoy it. And, trust me, you'll enjoy it.

Seven words: Pizza Burgers flying style and Purple Cows. I'd also like to point out that Margaret B. down there has been out in the sun a little too long. This place is drive through only.

My favorite reason for visiting Bismarck (sorry mom and dad). It's the highlight of any culinary tour of ND. Never had the fried chicken, the burgers, or the soup, though I'm told they're good. People flock here for the pizza burgers flying style (with or without onions), and as soon as you've tried one, you'll happily sit in line too. Flying style means the cooked burger, sauce, cheese and onions are grilled between two slices of white bread on a circa 1960 George Foreman sandwich grill. Yum. The other reviewer is right: the fries and gravy are very tasty but a once in a while treat. Or at least cut back to the regular size instead of the "shoebox". (Seriously, you can buy a shoebox of fries with a cup of gravy on the side.) The drinks are another highlight. Brown cows (chocolate shakes) and purple cows (grape shakes) are popular, but the single best thing produced in the state of ND is the hot-n-tot. It's a coke (or diet coke, if you prefer), with cinnamon syrup. Damn, I miss Bismarck. SIde note: It is ok to block traffic while sitting in the right lane of Main Street waiting to order. People understand and expect it. But do not sit on the railroad tracks. Trains do come through from time to time.

My friend invited me to come here at Big Boy Restaurant. My first thought was, Oh my god, My tummy will be full tonight. I already imagine big servings of the food. So the moment we came in the doors. I can already smell the aroma of the food. Good thing, I haven't eaten yet before coming here. I love their pizza! I didn't noticed that I have eaten too much. The service is good. So all in all, I recommend this place if you want to be really full and satisfied.

The Big Boy is an American icon. Whenever we are in Bismarck we try to stop at the Big Boy for lunch. It is just a drive thru, so plan on eating in your car or taking it home or to your hotel. There are not many places anywhere that you can still get a pizza burger flying style, which I highly recommend. Whatever you decide to order make sure you try the french fires and gravy. Don't expect to find many if any healthy choices here.

I used to love this place years ago when the burgers didn't taste so card board like when you can taste them through the condiment dousing. The pizza burgers flying style used to be so good and fresh and now they seem canned. I do like that they offer their sandwiches flying style but a few years ago it seemed exotic, now i just feel like they are hiding some deep nasty secret in that flying style tiny bread pocket. my favorite thing is the chicken gravy and fries, but yum, fries and gravy? if i am going to eat 40 grams of fat in a side, i better be impressed.

I've been a lifelong fan of Big Boy, and I can't get enough of it. Even though the place can take 3 orders at a time, the place is almost always overflowing into the street. My favorites are the purple cow (grape shake), pizza burger flying style (a pressed sandwich instead of on a bun), fries and gravy, hot n tot (cinnamon coke), and the alpine burger (reminds me of a deviled egg without paprika). These are THE best shakes/fries/pizza burgers/cokes you will get from a drive thru in the entire state. A large order of fries must be 2 pounds (comes in a box you normally get your whole meal in) and the gravy is a whole pint. I haven't even tried the chicken or walleye or half their stuff because I just love what I always order that much. I love that it's just a drive thru so that they can get your food out faster then you can park in the giant lot and watch the cars go by, or sit at a table and feed the birds, but at the same time I don't because I always want to walk back in and get more!

A must-stop place as you head through North Dakota! I'm addicted to the fries and gravy and the diet coke hot-n-tots (cinnamon syrup in your soda). The hard part is, what flying style burger to choose? Pizza usually wins. The boys love the brown cow and purple cow shakes. My husband who hates burgers is always very happy for the fried chicken. The place is fabulous looking with its long drive-through driveway, tall pines and scenic statue.
