We haven't been here in a long time, and surely not since management turned over. Impression: not much change to the facility itself as I remember it; pretty good food served with a background of traditional Dean Martin Italian tunes and early 50s pop. Great lemon cake for dessert - very moist and lemony fresh - after delightful entrees of manicotti and shrimp and scallops carbonara (the latter was a special). Neither of us was able to get past the halfway point with the entrees and the bag with the leftovers weighs a ton. Everybody in the place knew the owner by name - think we need to go back soon and get in the circle. Highly recommend!!

Dinner was fantastic! We had the insalate de caprese, the mushroom ravioli, the tortellini bolognese & a Caesar salad... Everything was DELICIOUS! Melissa was a great server - very prompt and polite! The tiramisu was also very good. So glad we tried this place!

Visited this place when we came to the hockey game. This is some of the best Italian food I have ever had. I got the veal pasta special and it was the beat pasta I have ever had in my life. The bread was to die for, and the lemoncello cake was superb. I will surely come back the next time a trip to Raleigh is in the cards.

One if life's little secrets. Great food. Had the veal picatta which was scrumptious. My husband has the meat ravioli with meatballs, and my son the tortellini with prosciutto. All were excellent. It was my sons birthday and they surprised us with a cannoli and happy birthday sung by the owner. Very nice all around. Well priced.

I Have been here twice and absolutely love it! I ordered the Chicken Marsala both times and it was consistently tender and perfect! The atmosphere is great for a dinner night and it has been quiet both times I have visited. The owner is always interacting with his customers and very friendly. The music is mostly in the 40/50s range, which to me was something to appreciate and enjoy. Who doesn't like a bit of Frank Sinatra? Overall both times have been an above par experience and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Such a great overall experience! Everything we ordered was fresh, and very authentic tasting. The service was top notch (we had Michael)- fast, well- paced, but never rushed, and we were always checked on. The owner also came by to welcome us! Highly recommended!

The restaurant contacted me (the server in particular) and apologized, as well as informed me that they did, in fact, charge me for the food I actually received. It's possible that I was mistaken and that they did. I don't have the reciept now to check. as it's been a while. I have been known to misremember things from time to time, and if that is the case, I apologize. They also asked me to give them a second chance, and I may do that in the future. Like I said, it's a bit off of the beaten track for me, although these days I'm finding myself in the area more and more. I'm sticking with my original rating though, because I think Yelp is about consumers helping each other and delivering honest opinions. I do think that restaurants should have a way to respond to reviews, but I'm not sure how I feel about getting this message. Did the boss have him write it? The thought occurred to me. I understand that you all make your living from this place, I don't write negative reviews easily. But I do call things like I see them.

Excellent Italian food in my area! My wife loves the gnocchi with pink sauce and she orders that every time we eat there! Buffet is awesome too except the meatballs are little tough and dry. I'd prefer less sauce on the pasta dishes but I know many people love being over-sauced on everything. So if you like to enjoy the perfect balance between sauce and noodles like I do, ask the kitchen to go easy on the sauce!

I visit Casa San Carlo for lunch maybe once a month. Each meal is extremely delicious. It is difficult for me to suggest one item over another. The staff is extremely friendly and Carlo visits the table each time I visit. No where else can I go for a great meal, personal service, and feel like I'm among family. Each Sunday dinner, there is a talented Italian singer who graces patrons. This is a great place to bring your family and not really spend too much money. I already can't wait for my next trip.

I wanted to love this place. I've been dying to try it for months. I went with my mother last Friday evening at 6:30. It was ok. Maybe my expectations were too high. The decor is lovely. The service is impeccable. Our server was literally the best server I've ever had. She was very eloquent in speaking about the specials, flowed very well and seeming very genuine. I wish I remembered her name, she was that amazing. The bread came out, I really loved the option of oil or butter. I had the eggplant. Was it good? Yes, but lacked that light crisp I'm used to. Seemed too mushy. It still had ok flavor and the sauce was good. I come from an Italian family and honestly my mom enjoyed the sauce. I wasn't as thrilled but it was good. I'm a bit picky about my Italian food. Instead of the spaghetti I opted for a side of Alfredo pasta so I could taste it. Linguine noodles for Alfredo? Interesting. Alfredo was a complete fail, pasta wasn't fresh. I didn't even eat my leftovers which was a lot of food. If you are into basic Italian and not overly picky then yes. Check it out. Service is amazing. Ambience was lovely in a smaller establishment. I would go back with my mom but will probably stick with my goto Italian place on Millbrook.

I wasn't really a fan of this place. Everything tasted like it had just come out of the freezer or can. Nothing authentic about this place at all.

I will say they're outstanding. I was pleasantly surprised. The owner is very kind to the guests, although it would seem as though he keeps his servers on a tight leash, he is pretty charming. I had the scallops, well cooked and very nice size. They were not perfect, but a 9 out of 10, which is pretty damn good for North Raleigh. Very romantic and reasonably quiet on the Thursday night we dined. Price is average to mid-high, expect to drop $100 for an app, dinner for two, and a bottle of wine. Service was outstanding, although we had the best server in the house. Very well trained staff and the kitchen is solid. They do Italian very well, which is more than can be said for many Italian restaurants.

This place was packed the first time I went there, which is a good sign. I got a large pizza and the Classico vongole casino. The pizza was good. A lot better than most places in Raleigh. The other dish was supposed to be clams stuffed with peppers but instead they gave me clams with linguine and red sauce. I'm almost happy for that mix-up because it was excellent! I finished that big portion dish and a few slices in one sitting. The staff was very pleasant and the owner said hi all. He would even shake your hand. Which you don't find at restaurants these days. This place reminded me of home in upstate NY. I'm definitely going back and recommending this place to everyone. Thank you Casa San Carlo!

I've only been here for the lunch buffet. Despite it not being a cuisine where you see tons of buffets, I think Italian is one of those that really lends itself to buffet-style service. All those yummy spices just get more delicious with time, the sauces keep everything moist, and there are so many delicious dishes to choose from. (Indian being another great buffet cuisine.) I don't eat Italian food out that often (if this restaurant was closer I would probably do so more often) but I've visited here four times over the past two years and really enjoyed it each time. I'm most happy when there is cannoli on the buffet :) but it's probably best for me when there is not. It is a great value and delicious.

Food 8/10 Atmosphere 7/10 Design 7/10 Parking 10/10 Friendly staff 9/10 Nice food presentation. Value for money 7/10 (family of 4 - $85) They make a GREAT Pizza ! Good seafood dishes. Our Waitress was not exactly knowledgeable of there menu... But than the owner jumped in and was very helpful. All and all recommended 7/10.

The bread basket alone is worth checking out! I'm not eating much bread these days, but these rolls with garlic, oil and some have a bit of tomato sauce...well, they are well worth the cheat! As for other food...I really like the Pasta Amatriciana, which has pancetta, onions & fresh basil in a red sauce. Asked them to kick it up with some heat and they did a good job of it this last time. Husband's latest here was the Tortellini Bolognese, which has a pink sauce. It was very rich. My only gripe with the food continues to be cheese. The food here is crying out for freshly grated or shaved cheese. I took my leftovers home and added some and it did indeed take it to the next level. There are always great sounding specials, but I've yet to try any because they're pretty pricey. They never offer the prices, but I've asked and Shrimp Scampi, for instance received an "I don't know, probably around $25" response. TIP: If you go for the lunch buffet, which is a great value for around ten bucks, go on the early side for the freshest experience. I have never seen them replenish anything on the buffet. Haven't seen things run out either, but if you hit it up when it all first comes out it's at its best. This is a pretty small restaurant with tables that are pretty close together. Our most recent Sunday night experience, service was okay, but Husband's drink went empty for quite awhile. He had water to rely on though. And our Server was as nice as can be, and busy working both sides of the dining room. Lastly, I am sad to say that singer Carmine, who we have enjoyed over the years, is no longer with us. Sure do miss that Old-World special charm he brought to the dining experience!

This place was fantastic! Everything an Italian restaurant should be. I got Iobster ravioli and taste-tested a special one of my dining companions had had. Both were fantastic. Carlos seems really involved in is restaurant and was walking around, asking everyone how their food was and how it was going. As an Italian, I really appreciated this. The one downside is that the cannolis were 3/5, which was a little disappointing. Would def recommend/go back next time in in the Raleigh area.

Casa San Carlo is one of the restaurants that I invariably stuff my face because I order too much food, because I can't just order one thing off of the menu. This most recent trip we shared a pizza (the cheese quality shows, as does the pepperoni which is beef rather than the cheaper pork or pork and beef mix that some places will use), as well as the house made veal tortellacci. If I'm in a mood for pasta, I'm going to go to Casa San Carlo. Hands down, no other place in Raleigh does fresh pasta as well as Chef Carlo. Word of advice: save room for dessert. Seriously. Carlo's tiramisu is arguably the best that I've ever had. He doesn't skimp on the ingredients (the mascarpone is delicious) and it's clearly house made (likewise for the cannoli).

Sorry I just don't get the other good reviews but I guess if you like pre cooked food that is smothered in sliced deli style mozzarella cheese then put in the microwave then pay top dollar for it than this is the place for you. There were some positives though. We were promptly greeted and seated immediately at the last table on a Saturday night. We were promptly greeted by our waitress who gave us great serivce and she was very knowledgeable about the menu. The bread was basted in oil and was tasty and the wine was also very good. The ambiance is a little cheesy but also kind of cozy at the same time. Unfortunately the tables are very close together so no.private conversations in this venue. Ok that's were all the good thing end. Our meal came out so fast so there was no way in a packed restaurant that it was freshly prepared. My wife got the lasagna and it was totally covered in deli style mozzarella cheese, part of it steeming hot and the other part cold..can you say microwave! I had the chicken parm and it was just average once again smothered deli sliced cheese and melted in the microwave so the chicken lost its crispy outer coating which was now mush and I don't have to tell you what chicken tastes like when you put it in the microwave! My one daughter had the meatballs and spaghetti once again pasta steeming hot but the meatballs were partially cold in the middle. My other daughter had the meatball sub which she said the meatballs tasted funny so ot tried it needless to say they were not very good and they tasted like frozen ones and definitely not freshly made. The kicker was the desert my wife's favorite tira misu which we took to go. As most people know Carlo use to own Casa Linga in mini city which had really good food and awesome Tira misu it was just in a really and I mean really bad location so she was excited to go home and try it. BOY was she dissappointed she said it was the worst she ever had. The cream tasted like straight butter and the whole thing was extremely sweet so she wound up throwing it out. My wife threw out tira misu!! I could not belive it so it must have been bad. Anyway in my personal opinion Master chef Carlo maybe should go back to his roots or at least back into the kitchen to get the standard of food back to where it needs to be especially for the prices he is charging as he is definitely capable of it. Unfortunately we will not return unless things change.

This restaurant is so cool, I feel like I'm stepping back in time a little bit when I go here! How many other Italian places still have the owner come out and talk to all the customers? Not many, at least not in this area! It's nice to know the owner actually cares what his customers think, a rarity these days.

We were really excited to try this place after a raving review from a friend. Sadly, we were very disappointed. The food was rather bland (I ordered the pollo capriccioso) and VERY overpriced. The wine selection was nice and they have a full bar, their saving grace. The owner was extremely nice, however, our server was pushy. I could also hear another server at the host stand complaining about being a sat a table in his section of just one older gentlemen. The atmosphere was somewhat romantic but the tables are really close together. I could hear every conversation that was going on at every other table. I can make better pasta at home in my Kitchen Aid.

Couldn't resist another trip to carbohydrate heaven, also known as Casa San Carlo. The fresh bread basket here has these garlic rolls that are like biting into an impossibly soft, warm cloud. Except this cloud is covered in garlic butter. I could eat too many of these very easily, but room must be saved for their chef's other delectable creations. All of which I highly recommend. The Tortellini Buongustaia is served in a rich house made cream sauce that manages to be savory and subtle at the same time, with mushrooms, prosciutto and peas. This dish never disappoints, and we rarely fail to order one for the table. Tonight we're also trying the veal Marsala, along with a repeat of the delicious fresh escargot served in a garlic marinara sauce that always makes us polish the plate. Dessert here is also house made, though whether we'll have room left after this spread is debatable! The tiramisu is my favorite in the area, very well made and always a great end to an excellent meal

Super busy the night we went. We were seated about fifteen minutes after our reservations but wasn't bad. I had Salmon Piccata which was tasty tho slightly salty. Hubby had Pollo Cacciatore Classico which he said was good. Daughter had Chicken Marsala with a nice sweet gravy. We had a Buffalo Mozzarella Caprese Salad which was delicious and perfectly seasoned with a nice pesto on the side. Overall I enjoyed it. If u r a seafood and Italian food lover, this is a good option.

This review pertains ONLY to the lunch buffet. Not ordering off the menu. What a treasure for $8.95. The great tragedy in my life now is that this place is way the heck in N. Raleigh, so I can't go there often for lunch since I work downtown. If you think Milton's is the only game in N. Raleigh for the italian lunch buffet category, you really need to check this place out. One caveat. If you just want pizza, better go somewhere else. This is an Italian place, not a Pizza place. So if you aren't in the mood for yummy chicken marsala, salmon with linguine and capers, and the like, then go elsewhere. Oh, and did I mention its amazingly only 8.95? I'm actually glad I work 10 miles away. Otherwise, I'd be in here at least once a week and eating way too much rich, delicious Italian.

Well this place was quite a surprise and a good one as that. Thanks to Tanith T for telling me about Casa San Carlo. I like to think I know good Italian food and Carlos is doing it right. I opted for the lunch buffet at the owners suggestion. The buffet looked awesome and had a selection of a lot of signature dishes. Penne a la vodka, tortellini with cream sauce, sausage and peppers, meatballs, chicken picatta, pizza, stromboli, eggplant parmesan, salad and more. For Italian food it's all about the sauce for me. Growing up with a mom who knows a thing or two about "sauce" Casa really shines. Do ask for the bread basket with unlimited garlic knots and foccacia, the bread is fresh and amazing. I ate so much food I needed a nap afterwards, now that's a good meal. Carlos also brought out escargot, tiramisu, and spumoni to try. Everything is made in house even the desserts. Escargot is not something I would even think of ordering here but OMG if you like escargot run there now. He prepares the escargot in a red sauce with fresh basil and it's out of this world. Make sure to save some bread and dip it in that sauce WOW! I don't travel out to this part of Raleigh much but I have a really good excuse now. I can't wait to gather the fam and come back for a big Italian dinner. Oh and Carlos makes his own wine. I didn't try any of the wine but I'm excited to get back for it.

Nice little place for a meal. Wait staff was professional and knowledgeable. We had the veal marsala and fettuccini with chicken. The marsala was more like a gravy and lacked that traditional marsala smell and taste. The veal was thin, moist and tasty. The fettuccini was thick and well prepared, could have had more chicken in it. The bread they give you in the beginning was good, too good for a diabetic! Overall was good.

Buena comida y buen servicio. We came here for mother's day and had to wait like at any other restaurants, but the wait was worth it. The hostess was very nice and attentive, the owne/chef is very friendly. We chose the buffet to eat and they had pasta, seafood, pizza, salad bar, appetizers and dessert, majority Italian. I don't know how authentic Italian it is because I'm not Italian, but food was very good. Place is a little small but they manage to organize everything. We'll be coming back :)

This hidden jewel off the well beaten path is the best Italian food Raleigh has to offer. It's where Italians go to eat, so you know it's authentic. The bread assortment is so good, but don't fill up on it before the meal. The pasta is hands down the best I've ever had.... And I've been to many places in the Triangle. The veal tortocello is my favorite: it's so tender and full of flavor that it almost melts in your mouth. Pair the pasta with a good wine and you will be in love. It's not the most visually appealing place like some of the other Italian places downtown, but it's small and never too busy so you get excellent service and attention. Great place to go to get away from the overcrowded joints downtown if you ask me. My girlfriend moved away for school, but every time she comes to town she wants to go here. Amazing food, great service, never too crowded..... Even though it's not the most appealing or romantic place, I simply cannot deduct a star because it's too good for the price. 5 stars for sure. Go try it

When lamenting to our priest about Casalinga closing he let us know that Chef Carlo was now running Casa San Carlo so we made the drive from Durham to check it out. We'll definitely be back. We knew it was true when we got there...Carlo's face out front, the smell of the restaurant when we walked in and even the bread basket was just like it was at Casalinga. The menu is smaller than it was but still huge compared to most restaurants and more than adequate. My favorite dish is the Chicken Capriccioso and the Cannoli was delicious. My heart is happy to find Carlo again...my waistline not so much. :) Thank you Carlo for continuing to bring such yummy Italian food to the Triangle.

My favorite place to go now in this area.... if you are around there for lunch, good buffet. Dinner time, went on a Sunday and they had someone singing live that was good. There pasta dishes and pizza is good!

San Carlo had been a staple for us 1-2 times month, usually take out since we have 3 young kids. At one point they had the maybe the best pizza in Raleigh and the wife loved the pasta. Went for pick-up last night and saw a sign outside "Under New Management". Uh-oh.... the pizza was horrible and the salad looked like half a side salad, what a rip-off. Will give them one more chance but the "under new management" might be a bad sign

We visited in December with a small group and enjoyed it very much. It was our first time eating out at Chef Carlo's new restaurant. We had eaten at Casalinga several times over the years before he moved here. Much of the menu would be recognizable to Casalinga regulars. There are many standard dishes on the menu that one would expect to see in a traditional Italian restaurant up North. We took a friend who was raised on Italian food in NY/NJ, who is a regular at Daniel's in Cary. He enjoyed it very much and said it would be worth coming back. He had one of the veal dishes -- I can't remember which one, maybe veal parmesan. One of the other people with us had the lasagna, which they said was great. The bread they put on the table was good (warm sliced Italian bread, garlic knots, and another Italian bread with some red sauce baked onto it, just like Chef Carlo served at Casalinga). Chef Carlo also has his signature dishes, which are done very well. I had the Scallops alla Carlo, which was very good, but pricey ($25-$30). The scallops were very large (1.5"-2") and very tender. My wife had a seafood ravioli dish, which she enjoyed. Both were very much like the same dishes we had before at Casalinga when Chef Carlo was there. The restaurant was VERY crowded, with a line out the door, which gives you some idea of what others think this restaurant. It was a Friday night, and we were glad we had a reservation. Even so, it took a while for us to get our food. We had a great time nonetheless, and it was a pleasure seeing a crowded restaurant for a change, with so many places going out of business lately.

I guess I'm bitter. San Carlo was my favorite Italian restaurant ever. The new management and chef killed all my favorite menu items and raised the prices. Tonight I had farfalle with creamy pesto and sundried tomatoes. It was sweet and weird. And pink. My husband and I were hoping to like the new menu, but we just don't. However, the house made tiramisu was good.
(2)
M R.
The food is really good, service is attentive. I would have given them 5 stars save for 2 minor complaints -- their tiramisu, and seating. Their tiramisu is VERY DISAPPOINTING, it seems they scrimped on the ingredients and didn't use real lady fingers. Plus, it was too sweet, and the chocolate chips are more an annoyance than an enhancement. The restaurant is very cramped, which I realize that they are trying to maximize capacity, but it's not very comfortable. Good thing they take reservations!

If you are looking an atmosphere, service, and quality that chain restaurants like Olive Garden and Macaroni Grill can't consistently provide, try Casa San Carlo. The service from greeting to wait time to seating to server to pacing of food delivery rivaled with other quality restaurants. The bread baskets offered three varieties, each different in taste and texture. I brought out-of-town family here; it was also my first time. Two things kept my rating at 3 stars: the price (would have been more reasonable if entrees came with salad or salad was at least discounted with entree) and my meal choice of pollo parmigiana (chicken was tough). If not for these two tidbits, I easily give it 4 stars, quite possibly 5 stars. Those things aside my guests cleaned their plates and we're talking full plates.

While I have been getting take out pizza and the occasional sub from San Carlos for several years, tonight was only the second time I dined in house, and it was excellent. There were four of us, two couples, and while our friends initially wanted to go to a Italian restaurant a little further down on Durant, we were able to persuade them to come with us and give San Carlo a try. Immediately upon walking in they seemed to like the place. They had a lone violinist moving around the dining area playing Christmas songs, and with the low level lighting, it created a nice atmosphere. We all agreed it was very nice. There were several open tables, and we were promptly seated and waited on. Two appetizers were ordered, mine being the bacon wrapped scallops on breaded, deep fried Zucchini and our friends got the bruschetta. I can not speak for our friends appetizer, but mine was very good. Because I live and work in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, I am a little spoiled by the great sea food I can get there. With this in mind, the scallops themselves were not the best I have had recently, however the presentation of these with the zucchini, bacon, glaze and the quantity (8),, you cant beat the value of this appetizer. It was a special they had that night, but if you dine there and they offer it...give it a shot, you will not be disappointed. Now on to the main course. The entree I had was not given a name. It also was one of the specials that was offered that night, but it consisted of grilled chicken breast, sweet Italian sausage, grilled potatoes, jalapeno peppers, sauteed spinach, mushrooms, and some bell peppers. It was very good. Somewhere in there they had thrown in just the right amount of garlic, and I loved it. The portion was certainly big enough, as I have a takeout box in the fridge that I am looking forward to digging into tomorrow prior to the Steelers game. My fiance had the bakes ravioli, and she said they were very good. They certainly looked good. For the longest time I viewed San Carlo as a good place for take out pizza, however after tonight experience I will look at this restaurant in a new light. Its not jst a place for pizza. Everything I have eaten from here has been top notch. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for some good Italian food. Its a gem.

We returned to Casa San Carlo last Friday to give it another try. Obviously they are doing things right as the place was packed. We were greeted immediately (huge improvement there) and again chose to sit at the bar vs. waiting for a table. I would suggest making a reservation if you're partial to table seating. We steered clear of the pizza this time as we were sort of on a schedule. I had the Calzone Spinaci (spinach, mozzarella, and ricotta). It was truly tasty. The crust was delicious, and the filling was creamy and stringy...just how I love that blend of cheeses. Ken had the Ravioli di Carne and he said that was pretty darn good too. The one caveat I have is that the red sauce is sweet. This is a matter of personal preference, and you're on one side of the fence or the other on this. I love sugar; I love sweets. I don't care for sweetness in my entree though. So I polished off my calzone sans sauce. It was stand-alone good anyway, so it didn't matter. I'll order Alfredo or vodka sauce in the future. Like I said, the place was packed, so obviously a lot of you enjoy a sweet sauce. It was nice to see a couple of familiar faces too. Servers Evelyn and Dennis are awesome and know how to make you feel welcome and comfortable. We had a much better experience this second time around. Cheers!

By far the best Italian food in the Triangle! It reminds me of the meals my great grandmother used to make. From the excellent food to the warm and welcoming atmosphere this restaurant is a winner. Carlos and his staff make you feel like family. For a real treat experience the lunch buffet or dinner on Sunday night with the one and only Carmine performing tunes from greats like Frank Sinatra and others. Chef Carlo is truly a master!

Authentic, tasty, well prepared Italian favorites - fried calamari appetizer; linguini with mixed seafood (white sauce) and eggplant parmigiana. pasta was perfectly al dente; seafood was tasty although the mussels came out a bit overcooked, but the shrimp and scallops were cooked just right. generous portions will leave you satisfied with a doggie bag to go.

We live in the neighborhood, and have been curious about this restaurant so finally decided to try it last night after seeing so many good reviews online. We've laughed many times at the cheesy 'chef' photo outside the restaurant, so the way outdated 80's vibe of the interior was really no surprise, Christmas garland with lights and all. No biggie, I've had great food at restaurants with weird ambiance before. I was really looking forward to dinner, and when a basket of warm rolls and bread came we were not disappointed, they were really good and the kids especially loved them. Then, we had the calamari with marinara which was obviously pre-breaded frozen calamari. Not inedible, but for sure not a winner. Caesar salad had good dressing, but the croutons were straight from a box. The kids had pizza, which was just ok. A step above 'school pizza', as my husband commented. I had the tortellini which was ok, and my husband had lasagne which was not very good.. pretty dry on the inside and pasta was gummy, not quite as good as Stouffer's. Service was friendly and prompt, and they did have a magician which the kids loved. All-in-all, I'd say the experience was just less than okay, mostly because of the food. In general, everything tasted like it came straight from a box or can. Not fresh, not homemade. Next time I'll save my $90 for two adults and two kids and order in. I'd be happy to spend that much on a fabulous meal, but it just feels like a waste to spend it on this mediocrity. It's too bad, I really did want to like the place. We won't be back.

BUYER BEWARE! We choose this "place" because it had 4 stars and a FEW good reviews. Big Mistake. Bread in basket was warm lumps of flavored dough. The Veal Parma thickly coated with breadcrumbs and dried out. Tomato sauce tasted like it came out of a can. Not even a fleck of spices. I asked for my Eggplant Parma to be cooked well and cheese browned. It came to the table with a 3x3 slice of deli mozzarella that looked like sliced white bread. Very unappetizing with some eggplant flavor. The kitchen thought it humorous that it came back. Was told there would be a slight up charge to get the gnocchi as the side pasta. Received the bill. Slight??? $10.00! It was a cup of potato mush. A disgrace to the way authentic gnocchi should taste. The waiter said $2.00 would be taken off the bill. I asked to see the manager, Melissa. After waiting 15 minutes, watching her joking and giggling at the bar I decided to get up and speak with her. Melissa disappeared into the kitchen. This woman represents the owner?? I hope the owner, #1- fires her, she is not qualified to take care of the customers. #2- hire a chef that knows how to cook Italian food. #3- gets serious about serving "Authentic Italian with the freshest of ingredients" or stop taking people's hard earned cash. I gave it one star for our gracious waiter, Eric and the unsweetened tea. Don't waste you $$.

I would seriously rather go to Olive Garden, that's how bad this meal was. I wanted to like it. I really did. I just moved here from a city full of good Italian food and was told this was the only place worth going in Raleigh. Not so. Pizza bread was bland, calamari was chewy, everything tasted like it was frozen. My wife got the special--it was drowning in sauce and ended up costing $30! I will always drop money for good food, but this was not good food. Seasoning in everything seemed off or nonexistent. Even the salad dressing was bland. $70 for dinner overall, which would be fine if this was quality food. If this is the best Raleigh has to offer for Italian, you're better off going to a chain. And as an Italian, I don't say that very often! On the positive side, we had a really good server.

We truly enjoyed our time here. The food was good the service was excellent and the tiramisu was delicious.

I asked for spaghetti meatballs and meat sauce and the meat in the sauce was almost spoiled. Meatballs were frozen not fresh. After leaving l prayed I wouldn't get sick. I didn't but when you can taste how old the meat is it is not a good thing.

I have to agree with several other reviewers and compliment the well trained staff and kitchen. Many owner/operators don't train their staff well, but that is not the case here. Food quality is excellent, and the food preparation shows a delicate and subtle hand that is not often found. Very, very well done!

Great selection and service. Always nice when the owner comes out to great and ask how the meal was prepared. Great veal selection and taste, the red sauce for the pasta side dishes was a little bland. Probably the best mussels app I have ever ordered, good cozy place for home cook Italian. The serving portions are huge, split a meal and order more wine and apps!

Just left the buffet...and at $8.95, it's an absolute bargain! I had sausage & peppers, lasagna, mussels in marinara (there was even a juicy scallop in there), chicken Marsala and a slice of pizza. I didn't even get to the meatballs, fish, or eggplant. I love a good buffet and I loved this place!

I love this place! The owner is always friendly and attentive! There are not ton of buffet offerings but all delicious. We frequent this place because we are never disappointed.

No one can lose weight here. We went for lunch and ordered from the lunch menu. My spinach salad was delicious, but it was a dinner sized salad. I had asked for it to come before my meal BUT they came together. Meal gets cold. Waitstaff left a lot to be desired. They did not bring plates for the appetizer, removed the appetizer plate from table without asking. We had to ask for bread. They removed my sisters dinner plate without asking. They did not inquire about refreshing our bar drinks. They brought the check without asking if we wanted dessert. Did not refill our coffee or even ask about doing it. We had two young ladies who served us but both need more training. Size your lunch meals appropriately. Remove plant from wall sconce or replace it and clean the mirror. All of your reviews were the reason we chose your restaurant, sorry to say we were disappointed.

Very cool old school ambiance in a strip mall: 60's-ish/Art Deco furnishings, subdued lighting, waiters in black slacks and shirts, standards playing in the background. Menu is extensive, and there were six or seven specials. Plenty of pasta, chicken, veal, and seafood dishes (the menu is available online). Pizza is also served. Pasta dishes are priced in the mid teens; chicken, mid teens to $20; veal, $17 to $21,- this ought to give you an idea of pricing. I didn't check the wine list, but several good choices are available by the glass for ~$6. We both had pasta dishes with cream sauces, so unfortunately I can't comment on the red sauce. Both dishes (tortellini with prosciutto and peas; lobster ravioli) were quite good. Service was pleasant and efficient. I will definitely return to Casa San Carlo!

Really good food and atmosphere. Great lunch buffet though not a lot of variety day to day but consistently tasty food. Dinner menu offers some delicious plates, veal picatta, chicken francesca, tortellini, garlic knots. The owner, Carlo, is usually there greeting patrons and providing meal recommendations. Reasonably priced, seating limited. Pizza is awesome and I've even been able to create an old favorite. Carry-out only.

One thing this area doesn't have a shortage of is strips mall Italian places, so with a deal saver in hand we decied to try this place for dinner. Upon check in on YELP for this place, it came up we could have a free dessert with the purchase of an entree. Unfortunately, when asked if I could use both the dealsaver for $20 and a free dessert I was told no. The interior is quaint and the place does seem to boast a clientele base of returning folks. The Italian music was appropriate, and the lighting perfect with twinkle white lights around. The bread that came out was brought with oil and butter. Very nice touch and both of us appreciated having a choice. I couldn't decide between the specials of grouper, blue crab ravioli, or lobster ravioli. The waiter wasn't helpful as he had tried non of them so he couldn't really recommend one over the other. I decided to go with the blue crab ravioli that came in a pink sauce. With a salad that was about $26. Pretty pricey for sure. And the pink sauce looked more red to me. There were 5 large ravioli but they were swimming in so much sauce I had to remove them and place them on my bread plate to eat. They were firm and not mushy, but I think the sauce had to be used to add some flavor, but lacked something as well. I really wanted some shredded cheese on my meal as did hubby, but none was forthcoming from the waiter. When I asked, before I could finish my sentence, he came back with fresh pepper. That added to this slightly boring dish. Hubby ordered off the menu and went with the "Pollo Favoloso" which boasts boneless chicken breast, prosciutto, mushrooms and artichokes, in a brown wine sauce topped with mozzarella cheese. It looked more like a white sauce to both of us. I took the description right off of the website, and the owner has stated it is a cream sauce. And my husband commented as well that at $18.99 he felt that was kind of steep for pricing of his meal. We both felt that that the food was unrecongizable under all of the sauce and we both felt that less sauce would have been appropriate. The food was good, to be sure, but overly sauced and we did tell our server about this. He let the owner/ chef know and both called us "lighters" and for a moment I thought they were calling us liars and said that their "customers" prefer their meals that way to sop up the sauce with bread. So I guess we are the exception to the rule?? Had the sauces been excellent then maybe we both would have agreed, but in essence we did not. That left kind of a sour taste for both of us, and we were encouraged to come back another time to use our free dessert YELP check ins, but having complained about the meal this time, I felt they could have offered us free dessert while we were there THIS TIME. I certainly don't want to discourage anyone from visiting a locally owned establishment, but my experience suggests that hubby and I have better choices in the area which might cater more to "our needs" which might be the exception to the rule, rather then the norm.

Intentionally came here again about a year after my first visit. Still very, very good. Nice little place, clean with excellent service and the owner comes around to introduce himself and welcome you. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. This time I had the veal piccata which was a generous amount of lightly fried veal in a buttery but not to rich lemony sauce and capers with lightly sauteed thin slices of zucchini. It came with a side of spaghetti in a nice bolognese sauce and some warm different types of bread with oil for dipping. Other restaurants could learn a lot from this place. I will always make a point to go here when working in Raleigh.

I love this place. I have never had anything I didn't enjoy. So far, myself and my guests have had the chicken and veal parm, bologenese, pizza, lasagna, calamari, and cheesecake. Although nothing crazy fancy, they do an excellent job on the classics. We even one night and they had a live singer. He was AWESOME - the music wasn't so loud that you couldn't talk and the set a really nice ambiance. The only con I would give is that they charge a split plate fee. Their portions are HUGE and we enjoy appetizers so we always want to split a plate. We never end up doing it because we just opt to bring home leftovers. I highly suggest making reservations!

So glad to have found Carlo!!! The best Itialan resturant in Raleigh. Carlo always makes you feel like family, Bella! We have never had a bad meal here- we used to go to Caslinga but it is not the same without Carlo. Appetizers, meals, pizza, bread, you name it, it all is great!!!

Well, I just finished my leftovers from Casa San Carlo and they were as delicious as the main event last night! My better half had the shrimp scampi special and I had the cheese ravioli. Service, atmosphere, food.....everything was great! We've been looking for a solid Italian restaurant in RDU for quite some time and we keep striking out....until now. Found this place via Yelp - thanks!

My husband & I ate dinner at this place for the first time this past weekend. We got there around 6:30 and it was busy. We hung out at the bar while waiting for our table. The drinks were awesome. They are not stingy with the alcohol. The bread basket we had when we got to our table, was fantastic! My husband got the lasagna- it was the best we have ever had! I had rigatoni & sauce. The salads were a little small for the price but everything else was perfect! We grew up in New England and this place reminded me of NY style Italian. We will be regulars of this place going forward.

Service: Slow which was sad considering we were the only ones there for most of the time. Water stayed topped off. Waiter knew the menu pretty well and answered all our questions. Atmosphere: They had a lounge singer. He coughed quite a bit, turned his head away from the mic, but he was in front of the kitchen so it made me a little nervous. It wasn't pleasant. (Side note: Their website is flash and plays music, turn it off in the lower right.) Food: Table bread was bad. Pizza bread had no flavor, garlic knots? were stale and flavorless. The free side salad was a decent size. Husband got Scallops alla Carlo. It smelled like fish. He thought it was ok, but if it were mine I'd have sent it back. I got the pollo favoloso. It was BLAND. Each component just tasted like it's own component, it didn't tie together well and desperately needed something. We tried to flag down the waiter for the fresh ground pepper, but they decided to ignore us despite being the only ones there. The table pepper was stale. I didn't realize until I was looking at the pictures for the names of the dishes, but pictured here it shows parsley, there wasn't any on my plate, no herbs, no flavor.

Everything is frozen or out of a can. The bread assortment is cheap and nothing near fresh. The red sauce is runny and bland. There is nothing about this place that justifies the prices. Go elsewhere.

Absolutely amazing food. The homemade bread was awesome. The fried mozzarella was just above and beyond what you would expect. I had a veal entree and my wife had lasagna. Both were very, very good. You have to try the limoncello cake as well. Will definitely return soon.

ITS ITALIAN FOOD LOVERS TIME - This Place Is Excellent! Wait let me refrase that "ITS FREEKING AWSOME! If you are looking an Italian atmosphere, great service, and quality that not even the big institution chain places can provide, try Casa San Carlo. The service from greeting, to seating, to server rivels all other top restaurants. The bread basket OMG offers three different type breads, each different and satisfying. Just had the lunch buffet. For $9 the food was terrific and ever changing so you had a variety of great dishes to chose from. Service was very good and the owner (very visible) was right in the thick of it making sure you had everything you needed. Recommend this place if your ever in the Raleigh NC area and want very good Italian.

Excellent Italian food. This restaurant seems like it could be in a more "upscale" location considering the service and the meals themselves. Buffalo Caprese salad was large and creative, Veal with Portobellos in a Marsala was tender and delicious to the last bite. The veggie pasta dish for my girlfriend was perfectly cooked(pasta, veggies, mmmm!). The basket of fresh baked bread almost turned into a meal itself, it was that good. To top it off, our server, a guy who explained it was a hobby job for him, was so exceptional that I'd ask for him at any top rated restaurant in the world. Amazing. Thank you! I'll reserve the 5th star for a second location with better ambiance.

My wife and I have really enjoyed our two experiences so far at this place. The restaurant has a nice feel and atmosphere to it despite being in a strip mall. The staff is very friendly. First of all, they give you a basket of several different bread types (bread with pizza sauce, garlic knots, and regular garlic bread). The bread is really good and plenty but I would prefer some not having so much garlic/butter on it. It would be nice to have some plain bread mixed in there as well. However, this is only a minor complaint. The menu is quite large with plenty to choose from. They also have lots of different specials not on the menu; however, these specials seemed the same both times we've been so I'm not sure how often they are rotated. On our first visit, my wife had the Penne ala Vodka. It was okay but it had way too much sauce on it and seemed to very heavy on the cream. It would have been awesome I think with about 1/4 of the sauce on it. The next visit however, my wife ordered the regular baked ziti and loved it. Both times, I've ordered the baked ziti with sausage and loved it as well. We really liked the fact that there was just the right amount of sauce and cheese on the baked ziti. It wasn't overly cheesy or too dry from lack of sauce, which often happens at many places. Also, on our second trip, some of my family joined us. They had the fettuccine Alfredo and the beef tortellini. Both were really good and received their approval. If you haven't tried this place yet, give it a try. Also, it seems like their menu on the website isn't their complete menu as there are a lot of other options on the actual menu at the restaurant.

Everything here looked delicious! The inside is dark and well-appointed for an Italian restaurant. Once you stepped through the door, the parking lot is hidden by thick curtains that cover the windows. There were gorgeous photos of Italy (mostly Venice, I think) framed on the walls (in black-and-white). The decor definitely beats any other area Italian restaurant I've been to. The meal started out with three types of warm bread. It was a great start to the meal (and delicious). I regretfully didn't order pasta--I was enticed by the waitress's description of a caprese salad with imported mozzarella, huge sliced tomatoes, fresh basil, marinated mushrooms and red peppers. I ordered it as my main course after a warning it was enough for 3-4 people. I only finished half! It was really good--the mozzarella was so fresh and the salad had the right amount of oil to add flavor without being sticky. I was a bit shocked when the check came and the salad was $21 (I was expecting in the $15 range because it was a special and the other salads were around $10). If I had realized it would be more than any pasta dishes, I would have probably opted for a pasta (all of my neighbors' dishes looked delicious--both the cream-based and red sauce dishes). Anyway, other than a waning to check on the prices of the specials, I would definitely recommend Casa San Carlo for Italian in the area.

I had date night with my husband last night here. Amazing service and food! Our waiter Guy was very personable and made great suggestions when we asked questions. The wine suggestion that we ordered was smooth and tasty, the food was hot, fresh and oh so yummy! Don't get me started on the lemonchello cake that melts in your mouth!(sorry for my grammar) although it was quite busy in there we truly felt like we were in a private room with out own personal waiter. The owner even greeted every table! I can't wait to eat my left overs today!

Oh Carloooooooooo so glad you are back and I finally made it here. From the original owner of Casalinga (which apparently could not survive without him) comes the famous lunch buffet. Lunch buffet you say cold blah food...NO WAY. You do have to wait for them to refill the Farfelle with the Vodka Sauce since the cook is busy making it in the huge pan and brings it right from the stove into the buffet table. Pizza and stromboli are staples but I have to say its the Farfelle (bowties for you non italians!) that kept me going back. I always skip the rabbit food (salad portion of buffet) but the eggplant parmagiana and the lasagna were also wonderful. Have to go back for dinner soon.

Wonderful food. Great small atmosphere. I love this place!!! Not a chain restaurant. Fresh food all made at the restaurant. Reminds me of the Italian restaurants I use to visit up north. The waiters are very attentive. But the food sells the plsce. It's a must visit place in Raleigh. You will not be disappointed.

Had another fantastic time. This is the same owner that started casalinga that is now closed and was at mini city on Capital Blvd for many years. This is the epitome of what a successful non-chain restaurant should be. I think with the much more appropriate location for their clientele they will do well. Calamari appetizer is as good as you will find anywhere. And plenty of it, too. Marinara sauce has always been exquisite and still is. The quality of food is as good here as it ever was at the previous location if not better. I had the veal with cream sherry sauce, my wife had shrimp and scallops in a red sauce and a Caesar salad that was as good as a table-side served 'real' Caesar salad, not the usual romaine and Caesar dressing that most places serve. The scallops, omg, the scallops.... out of this world. Perfect. My veal was very tender and the pasta in each of our meals seemed homemade to me as I occasionally make my own as well. The mozzarella on my veal was also apparently home made. (Mozzarella is not exactly rocket science to make, but someone took the time here to do it perfectly.) Had a great bottle of wine and the bottle wine price ($22) seemed reasonable as restaurant wine prices go. No room left for dessert but we always used to get their tiramisu and just couldn't eat anymore last night. We also used to always get their stuffed pizza, which we hope they will continue making at this location, 1 slice is like a meal. So much better than any of the typical Italian chains, creative menu, attention to detail, the owner came out and stopped by each table and chatted to make sure everything was perfect. The way it used to/ought to be. And after all the years we ate at casalinga, we still have yet to try their lunch buffet which has always gotten great reviews from friends. He still is carrying that tradition here as well.

Most horrifying experience. At first the food was ok however once we inquired about the previous chef we were told that they had more roaches than customers.

As always ... Chef Carlo has done it again! We went for lunch (the buffet) and the hot dishes were hot, the cold ones cold. Just as it should be. The Penne ala Vodka is my favorite. ALWAYS done to perfection with flavors that linger on your tongue and urge you to take another bite. The Cheese Tortollini was delightful. The broccoli stromboli ... tender, full of flavor and loads of cheese! We had never been to Casa San Carlo prior to the management change, but we had been to Casalinga many times. I can only feel that the addition of Chef Carlo was a welcome change at Casa San Carlo. Always the consummate chef, a congenial host and a welcome smile ... this man was made for the restaurant business. Having grown up in Boston, my taste buds are very thankful to have found Chef Carlo. No mass produced run of the mill junk here. Come on out and taste the flavors of Casa San Carlo!

Got the hankerin' for some Italian tonight...in part too because I didn't want to cook. Search Yelp for "Italian" and voila! This is a small, quaint bistro with a more-than-adequate menu. The chef/owner is Franco Licciardi, who was born and raised in Naples, Italy. All of the meals at San Carlo are prepared to order by Franco himself, many of which are old family recipes. I walked in and placed a to-go order, which was prepared while I ran a short errand. Next time I'll stay and enjoy the atmosphere. I got the Pollo Alla Mediterraneo, which was delicious - angel hair with a red sauce, garden veggies and shrimp-stuffed chicken. I can't wait to try something else on the recipe! Great place for a date. A large group might be a bit tough to manage due to the smaller size.

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

(5)Katie L.

(2)Kevin Y.
(4)Eric H.

(1)John V.
(4)Mark D.

Carlo shook our hand as we walked in the front door. We were well taken care of and the food was excellent! We appreciated the warm, romantic atmosphere and we will definitely be back! Love this environment. Thank you for a great meal.

(5)Jacob J.

(5)Shruti D.
My favorite place to go now in this area.... if you are around there for lunch, good buffet. Dinner time, went on a Sunday and they had someone singing live that was good. There pasta dishes and pizza is good!
(5)Sean G.

Very Friednly...The bread was so good! Everything we ordered was wonderful!
(3)Lea C.
(2)M R.
(4)Steph P.

Its a gem.
(5)Matt K.
This place is a hidden gem. Delicious Italian food. We've tried nearly everything here and everything was great. When they have lobster raviolis go for them.
(5)Kelly G.
Cheers!
(3)Jill G.
Fried Zucchini app is delish! Servers are very friendly. House wine is not bad and portions are large.
(4)Donna M.
(5)Ryan B.
Amazing food highly recommened I go there atleast twice a week!!
(5)Pat N.
(4)Megan W.

Always Excellent and service from Brianna was perfect. We always make it in from Dallas, TX to eat with you. Ambiance is truly wonderful. We love u Carlos

(1)Andrea D.
(1)Stacy W.
We truly enjoyed our time here. The food was good the service was excellent and the tiramisu was delicious.
(4)Jerry R.
I asked for spaghetti meatballs and meat sauce and the meat in the sauce was almost spoiled. Meatballs were frozen not fresh. After leaving l prayed I wouldn't get sick. I didn't but when you can taste how old the meat is it is not a good thing.
(1)Jim C.
I have to agree with several other reviewers and compliment the well trained staff and kitchen. Many owner/operators don't train their staff well, but that is not the case here. Food quality is excellent, and the food preparation shows a delicate and subtle hand that is not often found. Very, very well done!
(5)J K.
(4)Michael L.
(4)Emilee M.
I love this place! The owner is always friendly and attentive! There are not ton of buffet offerings but all delicious. We frequent this place because we are never disappointed.
(5)Evelyn M.

(4)Kelly G.
(5)Ashley F.
Went here on Valentine's Day with my husband. Service was exceptional and food was excellent. Very nice and accommodating owner. We will be back.
(5)Paula E.

Everything tastes frozen and reheated. Even the canoli. Very disappointed. Don't know how it gets good ratings.

Best Italian food in NC. I would highly recommend this to Italian food lovers. I will definitely be a repeat customer. Two thumbs up high you will not regret it.

Is the salt shaker broken Carlo? Why is everything ridiculously salty??? Very disappointing.

Having been to Italy on several occasions and thoroughly enjoying the food along with a nice glass of Prosecco, I must say the food took me right back! This is definitely the best Italian food in town!!

Bland, extremely over priced food in a cramped room. Nice staff was its only redeeming quality. I just completely wasted 50 bucks. I hate when that happens.
