This place gets 5 stars because of the excitement I felt before, during, and after. After being off the grid for days since my phone didn't get reception and wifi was down all over the islands due to the recent rain storm, it was so great to get on wifi and check on the family, the dogs, and share on Facebook some of the awesome sunsets we had at our campsite. The place was really cute too. Diner with the cool seats and chairs, the art on the wall caught my eye too. The breakfast was your typical eggs, bacon, and toast. Nothing fancy, just hit the spot good! The server did a great job. The place was easy to find. The parking was easy. The prices were reasonable. It was clean. Food prepared quick and exactly how we ordered.

Great service. Good breakfast/brunch options. Old school interior. Very welcoming and friendly staff.

Being from the north, I've never quite understood the breakfast craze that exists in the south. I always say...it's eggs and bacon, how good can it get. Well, I found out today just how "good" breakfast truly can be. We walked in and were immediatley greeted and sat at a table, in less than 30 seconds our server came by to get drink orders. I ordered the Country Ham plate: two eggs (I ordered over-easy), grits or hashbrowns (I ordered hash browns), of course country ham and finally toast or a biscuit (I ordered the biscuit...more on this later). Food didn't take long at all and when my plate arrived the first thing I asked for was hot sauce. Typically when I dine out at a diner or breakfast spot, they use no seasoning and the food is bland...my option to sauce the crap out of it. I'm glad I tried my food first, the eggs were perfectly seasoned as was the grits. And then to the golden over sized buttermilk biscuit. I would make a 300 mile trip again just to have these biscuits!!! In fact, before I leave I am going to stop back and buy some for the road. I would highly reccomend Grits Grill if you're in a 150 mile raidus of Nag's Head. In fact, as I type this I'm getting hungry again...it's been 2 hours since I had breakfast. Is it too soon to go back?

I agree with Matthew R on this place. I'm not sure how a simple diner can be this inconsistent, but our experience was pretty awful. We were greeted by someone who was either extremely hungover or had some sort of mind numbing ailment. Though friendly, she was definitely unsettling, I was worried she was going to fall over. She even praised herself for not spilling anything whilst arriving at our table. We ordered creamy chipped beef (more like a nice naval platter of SOS) which appeared to be from a can. The hash browns were both burnt on the outside with way too much butter/oil and mushy on the inside. The "fresh" fruit plate was nothing of the sort. The fruit looked and tasted like it was sliced and prepared at least half a day prior. The pineapple wasn't even ripe. That's just plain lazy! It's fruit, just slice it right before you put it on the plate, it would be much better, and I wouldn't feel bad spending $6 for a couple pieces of fruit. We also tried the shrimp and grits... Big mistake. The shrimp were slimy mushy 20 count FROZEN shrimp with nice smelly veins running down their backs. You are in the middle of the ocean people! Seafood should be FRESH. I'll pay more for it if it is too. I never thought I'd say this, but there was too much bacon on it as well. I could not stomach this dish and was forced to return it. The waitress didn't even apologize for it being bad or bother ask what was wrong. Maybe she's used to food getting sent back. I then ordered a rueben which was not bad (hence 2 stars). Oh I almost forgot, but they served coffee, and didn't even ask if we wanted cream, and didn't bring any with it either. I know what you're thinking, "maybe the restaurant was slammed and the wait staff was over sat and the kitchen had orders backed up." Not the case, it was dead, there were at least 5 waitresses and only 6 tables occupied. So, if you want to roll the dice, give this place a shot! Just don't expect much, and you might get more than you hope for.
(2)Mickey B.
For a dinner it's just ok, had to ask if they could warm our daughters pancakes up cause they where cold, my gravy and biscuits was very spicy other then that no flavor and I am thinking they used food service biscuits. My wife's sandwich was the best thing there and that is sad cause they are to known for thier grits. Now for the over cooked instant grits. I guess they think people don't know what real grits taste like. The service was super fast and friendly and that goes a long way in here.
(3)Antonette P.
When we are on vacation we eat here every single morning for breakfast. Friendly staff and great food for a decent price. Love all the stuff for sale on the walls.
(4)Matthew R.
Have you ever started eating something and actually had to stop chewing to further inquire about what you just put in your mouth? Well that was what just happened during my first and last visit to this establishment. My hash browns were near raw(still white) and the rest of my breakfast required a lot of dashes from the Texas Pete bottle. To be honest, we should've discussed the state of our food with the manager and the cook could have been having a very off day. I have friends that really like this establishment.
(1)Sonia G.
Southern breakfast that feels like home. Energetic ambiance, good for groups or kids. The service is slow and it's hard to get a refil. Food very flavorful and good portions.
(3)Louis y.
This is from NYC prospective. price definitely 5 stars like New York City, service 3 stars. coffee is weak, juice is cheapest fake juice, food just passable. Definitely tourist trap. Won't come back.
(2)Granuaile O.
Excellent breakfast. Service is good, as is the coffee, but the fake juice is gross. Define to a great stop when you're in OBX.
(5)David R.
Food wasn't great but the service was fast and friendly. The establishment was very clean as well. Tables/booths were a little tight for anyone over 5'10.
(3)A B.
Had breakfast on the way home here after being disappointed our original choice did not have seating. It turned out to be the better choice. The grits, western omelette, hash browns, sausage links, rye toast, and coffee were all very good. The ambiance is definitely a town-diner and that was fine too for breakfast at the beach.
(4)Christiaan T.
You gotta go here for breakfast It's a classic old diner atmosphere Food made to order was great
(4)Rick R.
It's diner food! I can't give diner food 5 stars. But I can say it's consistent, friendly, and we are regulars for breakfast. Hi there. It's terrific local flavor! I recommend this place.
(4)Tish H.
A nice breakfast and lunch place, they made eggs and hashbrowns for me, a chicken salad sandwich for my husband, served quickly. We have been here before, and it was worth repeating. I just love the witty signs on the wall!
(4)Ellen Y.
So yummy! Great service, too. Biscuits and gravy: awesome. The homemade biscuits were perfect. Husband said some of the best he's had Grits: perfect balance of butter and salt. Didn't have to add either French toast: loved it! Bacon: cooked just right Highly recommend it when you visit OBX. The entry and putting your name down was s bit of a cluster. The hostesses maybe were overwhelmed? Not the friendliest girls but it was busy so probably just lots going on.
(5)Bbq S.
Great place to start a winter vacation in Nags Head! We just arrive around 9am perfect timing. My wife and son had shrimp and grits for $11.00 ,great price! They couldn't finish it! I have eggs over easy and a pancake! Our waitress was nice and social. It took no more than 10 minutes to get the food out! Coffee very good!
(4)Brian L.
If you're into cheap eats, big portions, comfort food, low prices...this is your spot. I made the mistake of ordering an omelet and an order of french toast. It was a good mistake, but still a mistake. The mass amounts of food that came out was not good for my caloric intake. Well, great if I meant to have the highest caloric intake possible. And the biscuit that came out was ludicrous. The biscuit was bigger than the size of my palm (I can palm a basketball, so I have largish hands). All in all, great. If I'm in the area, I'll be back.
(5)Cathy A.
Service was good, but I didn't enjoy the food AT ALL. I'm a Southern girl who grew up eating grandma's food every Sunday after church, so I'm no stranger to good Southern cuisine. The biscuits had no taste and were VERY bland; I was very disappointed because I love a good homemade biscuit and was looking forward to that the most. The hashbrowns were dry, tasteless, and drowned in grease and butter...I had to douse them in ketchup just to get an ounce of flavor. The country ham was dripping in grease and very fatty and I didn't really enjoy it...even the eggs were drowning in grease and tasteless. Even though the decor is adorable and the service was good, the food was dry, tasteless, and NOT worth my money. I won't return because of so many other dining options that are better (The Dunes restaurant has AWESOME breakfast).
(1)JP A.
I've had better service at 7-11. The food is average. I think years ago it was better but you can tell there is no pride here. There are hundreds of better places for a nice breakfast at the beach.
(2)Marijke M.
Grits Grill was amazing - we're already planning to go back tomorrow morning before we head home. If you go here you should sit at the bar and watch everything being made. Their eggs, hashbrowns, biscuits, and pancakes were amazing. Especially the biscuits (my friend called them biscuits on steroids) - they're huge and fresh. We had basic breakfast, but the whole time we kept seeing their Shrimp & Grits getting platted over and over; definitely seemed to be a favorite. The coffee is bottomless which was great, and our waitress was super nice and very attentive. We did have to wait (a Saturday at 9:30am), but only about 15 minutes, and the hostess was doing her best to get parties in as fast as possible. Overall - probably the best breakfast place in the area, couldn't imagine going anywhere else after eating at Grits Grill.
(5)Daniel C.
We stopped here on the way out of town because we didn't see a lot of options. The decor looked cute like an old diner. Upon entering we were sat in the left side of the restaurant, which I assume was a later addition. No cute diner over here. Just bland walls and sparse decor. Did not see that one coming. Service was standard, menu selections maybe slightly above average. We both went with your standard breakfast combo plates. I ordered the grits. I love grits, and if that's the name of your restaurant SURELY they're going to be amazing. Sadly, not the guess. The grits were completely average. Tasted like I made instant grits original flavor. Real disappointment. Please rename your restaurant. The food was all just pretty standard. Not was bad, and nothing was great. I will say portions are great. You are getting tons of food. After we paid, we went around the corner of the strip mall to a coffee house we saw to get a couple drinks. Upon walking in we immediately regretted eating at Grits. Please do yourself a favor. Before you eat at Grits, look a few doors down at Cafe Lachine.
(3)Christi Y.
For the love of all things breakfast, do yourself a favor and stop in here. Eat 10 biscuits. Pass out on the beach for a few hours. Come back the next morning and do it all again. Huge portions with extra crispy bacon (I am not part of the flubbery bacon lovers crowd). The south seems to enjoy this grits trend, not my favorite, but by far the best cheesy mushy stuff I encountered while on this trip. This is also the best place to cure a little thing I like to call a hangover. Literally the friendliest staff in all of North Carolina. If you don't stop here on your trip to the outer banks then you're doing it wrong.
(5)Jon L.
What a great place for breakfast. I liked everything about this place, it has the classic 'diner' feel about it. The service at the counter was excellent. I had tow eggs over easy with whole wheat toast and grits. Everything was excellent.
(5)Tonya C.
One star for service. First time to OBX, read the reviews on Yelp and decided to give it try... 4 stars it must be good. Yelp got it wrong! We sat at the bar, in front of the open grill. I ordered the ham plate, consisting of ham, eggs and hash browns. The hash browns were soggy! The came from a pile on the grill that had been sitting there for who knows how long... The eggs came from a mixture in a container stored away. While the whole time the lady was cooking my eggs from the mixture container, a carton of eggs sat untouched right next to the grill. The server prepared my toast with a slap of another type of mixture container that I can only assume it was butter. It was so greasy and dripping off the toast, I didn't attempt to eat the toast. Worst breakfast ever. Overall, cheap food at a high cost and lazy skills on the grill.
(1)Leonard H.
Today was my third breakfast here in four days. Three breakfasts, three different servers, three days and a different meal each time. Great service, great food and great coffee! Plenty of parking and easy to get to. What more can be said?
(5)Ruth C.
Perhaps my expectations were too high for their namesake, but the grits were pretty average-- moderately glutinous with a touch of butter. I was surprised to note that the toast was more aggressively buttered in comparison. Eggs cooked nicely to order even if the steak was a touch over. Ham with a touch of gristle, pancakes reasonably fluffy, coffee not atrocious. We were seduced by the Eastern Carolina BBQ sandwich on special but it was a little dry and lacking in flavor. Biscuit reminded me of Popeye's. Beans were sweet with a hint of meat, potato leek soup of the day was thick and shy on seasoning. Three and a half stars. Tons of parking in the shared plaza, and equally plentiful seating. Bathrooms towards the left were fairly clean. Hits the spot but nothing to write home about.
(3)Keith P.
This place has a great breakfast. We ate there nearly every day we were at the beach. Lunch is good also. Service is attentive and polite. Definitely recommend.
(5)Heidi R.
Cute little breakfast diner. Obviously, the grits a very good! My hubby grew up around the OBX and it's been a favorite among the locals for a long time! This past weekend we went and weren't disappointed in anything. You can run into a longer way during peak hours on the weekends. Biscuits and gravy were very tasty too!
(4)Don M.
Love it! Friendly staff. Good home cooking at reasonable prices. Good size portions here as well. Nothing else to say, come hungry!
(5)David M.
Had breakfast there on 2/16/15. Food was good. I had a ham and cheese omelet and my grandson had a gravy biscuit. They were out of Texas toast and they had no chicken fillet only tenders. Service was okay, had to ask for refills on drinks.
(3)Chris R.
A Nags Head classic, though I had never been here before during my many beach trips. They seated our large party shockingly fast. The food was good - exactly what you'd expect/ hope for from a breakfast diner. I had shrimp and grits for the first time and happily supplemented from my son's oversized breakfast plate of well-made, classic, ingredients. Add to this that the server was funny and personable, and it makes this a place I'd return to.
(4)Jim M.
Only place I ever tipped the cook as well as the waitress. I like to sit and watch my breakfast being prepared.
(5)Steven M.
Arrived Friday late morning for breakfast, were informed of a 15 to 20 minute wait. Forty minutes later we were seated. Burger and waffles were good, grits were good. Service was poor. Three of the four meals were delivered together with the waffles delivered 10 minutes later. Server was generally unattentive. Would not recommend this place.
(1)Jenny M.
Best breakfast in OBX. Mike the waiter is a trip. Makes you laugh and feel very welcome. Love this place.
(5)Joseph M.
Vacationing and needed a place to meet some relatives for breakfast. Waited maybe 20 minutes on a Saturday morning. You would think how can breakfast be different from one place to another. This place was amazing. Fresh, quick, and totally still talking about it. Not sure what it was but the omelet was delicious, the breakfast potatoes were perfect, and the atmosphere, service and grits were spot on!!!! Do not leave this place without having a biscuit - also, sausage gravy was the best I had!
(4)Deborah B.
This was a good 7 miles away from our location in a shopping mall. It has a diner feel and seemed pretty clean, but old. We were greeted at the door and the service was fast and friendly. We had a BEC croissant, hash browns, scrambled eggs, choc chip pancakes and shrimp and grits. The croissant was quite large and delicious, but not toasted. I'd recommend asking for it toasted if you like the light, flaky croissants. The hash browns weren't my fave, greasy, mushy and bland. I'd try the grits next time. The eggs and bacon were good, although most places in OBX seem to have the really thin, cheap bacon. I was told the pancakes are delicious and the grits and biscuit were very yummy. The shrimp didn't get a good review. IMHO, very good breakfast. Will give it another try for sure!
(4)Bill B.
We ate lunch here on our way to Kill Devil Hills. It was a great find for a quick lunch. The mozzarella sticks were amazing but the salads were really lacking. Loved the signs on the walls.
(4)Joe P.
Not good food at all. Very disappointing. Soggy hashbrowns that sat on the griddle in a pile. Biscuits and gravy - tasted like the gravy came from a packet. I didn't eat the grits but pretty sure they were Quaker instant grits. WORST corned beef hash ever - it looked like it came in frozen portions and just cooked up from there. Seriously tasted like something from a school cafeteria. Service was fine. The cooks had to work with some bad ingredients I think. If you're in this area, find another breakfast place.
(1)Jen S.
Ah-mazing!! Loved the cheesy grits, scrapple, and cooked my eggs exactly how I love them! Will be coming back here over and over! Highly recommend! Prices are great too!!!
(5)Ben K.
Had the chicken salad and hash browns. My wife and sister-in-law had the crab cake sandwich. The chicken salad was good and my wife and sister-in-law said it was one of the best crab cakes they have had.
(4)Brittney H.
Great prices and food!! The service was great, everyone was so friendly. I love the old diner atmosphere.
(5)Jonathan H.
Great service and food. Brought all the kids (including the 2yo) & they loved it.
(5)Barb G.
Fav place for breakfast when we r in nags head!! Great food - great service!! Crowded on weekends but easier to get in during the week. Excellent shrimp omelette !!
(4)Dennis K.
Excellent breakfast for 4 ... all delivered hot and quickly. Good, friendly service. Would recommend and return!
(4)Michael T.
Great food and service keeps us coming back!!!!!
(5)J C.
The food and portions are great. This is the most dirtiest restaurant I have ever eaten in. All employees eating, most with no hairnet or gloves. Many foods sitting out at temp. I got to see back in the kitchen and it was a tornado. Staff was not pleasent at all. Too many other places for breakfast than this one. I have worked in food service for 25 years. This is NOT the place to eat. It needs to be re-inspected quickly before someone gets sick, if they have not already. Used to be real good, but severe bad management.
(1)Aubrey E.
Yummy! In the middle or our meal my husband, who was eating the ham and cheese omelet, said we've got to come back here, I see lots more food I want to try. Luckily it's our first morning in the outer banks. Food here is excellent. I highly recommend the shrimp and grits.
(5)Sunny B.
We finally made it out the door early enough to eat breakfast around here. Grits Grill had some decent vegetarian options. The Greek Omelette was one of the best omelettes I've ever had! Delicious! The biscuits were great and I highly recommend the cheese grits! Great service, too!
(5)Karla B.
Excellent eggs - over medium was really over medium, over easy was really over easy. But most of all don't miss the biscuits, huge and oh so fresh!
(5)Ira L.
We ate here three times in 5 days. Great breakfast (2) and lunch. Friendly staff, great service and good grits.
(5)Richard R.
Great breakfast, love the shrimp-n-grits, sausage gravy-n-biscuits and buttery grits. If you get a order to go, check the order to make sure it is correct. This is a popular and busy place, we have had items left out of our orders and have had to make a trip back to the restaurant. Over all good food and a fun diner experience.
(4)Lisha G.
Best Shrimps and Grits!!! Thought I'd died and gone to heaven. We had heard the grits were awesome, so we drove down from Corolla,NC (vacationing), they were worth the hour drive to get there. Can't wait to come back in August!
(5)Joy F.
It's a great breakfast place. In a strip mall, like a diner but a tad larger. The breakfast here is so good that the locals eat here too. We always get the 2 egg & grits & bacon & biscuit breakfast with coffee & OJ. Service is fast - you'll get your breakfast before you're halfway through your coffee. It's a good, filling breakfast, served up fast and hot. Good value for the money IMO. This place can get packed in the summer months, with long lines on Sunday. Get there early if you can. Give them a try - nice to support a local business. And they are open year round so that's great in the winter when Sam & Omie's is closed.
(4)Nicole M.
Great grits! And lots of them. My husband got the shrimp and grits for breakfast and it was enough for 2 people. Everything was tasty and our waiter was reaaly good and friendly. The homemade biscuits are awesome! Great value for breakfast! We will go again !
(4)Elspeth M.
The family decided to go here when we were in OBX. The place was packed. I have to say I was shocked by how dirty the place was. The booth we were seated in had syrup on the wall. But the worst was when I asked for vinegar there was a bug in it. Hubby said Shrimp and grit were awesome. But my food I couldn't even finish.
(2)Yoshi F.
I recently vacationed in Nags Head for the first time a few weeks ago. My family happens to love breakfast, so I did a lot of research on good breakfast spots around Nags Head. Grits popped up a lot, but did not have a lot of reviews. We decided to give it a go and it was one of the best breakfast meals we had the entire week. Between the four of us, we had anything from sausage gravy and biscuits to shrimp and grits. All was top notch and I would highly recommend!
(5)Larry E.
Good place for breakfast.....quality food cooked right, good service and best grits on the beach. I go every year and have not been disappointed.
(4)Anita K.
This is a terrific place for breakfast! The cat-head biscuits were delicious, but too big for me to eat by myself. The waitress was friendly and the bacon and eggs were perfectly cooked. Had to share some of my food. There is plenty to eat, you can rest assured. I look forward to going back when we return to OBX.
(5)Eric M.
Great breakfast at a good price. Sausage and cheese omelet was very good, and of course the grits were on point. The service was very good and every one was so friendly. Looking forward to my next trip
(5)Pam L.
Have eaten here in previous years and the biscuits have gotten smaller And that is why we came back.
(3)Erin S.
We visited Nags Head this past June. This was our first time here. We headed out to breakfast and stumbled upon Grits Grill. It's kind of out of the way, and can easily be missed. We were happy we decided to stop. It's nothing fancy, just your basic diner type restaurant, but the food was really good. The Greek omelette was out of this world, and the prices weren't bad at all. We would definitely return!
(3)Tony S.
The eggs, were OK - the pancakes were OK - the hashbrowns were OK - the toast was a little spongy; but the service was great! We won't go back here, unless the lines at other places are just too long
(2)Randy T.
Another good breakfast place in the OBX. Everything was well cooked. The standout was the shrimp and grits. I also liked the hash browns which taste like they are cooked in bacon drippings.
(3)In D S.
Best biscuit's on the beach. Cheap & tasty eats. Line is out the door on weekends, even during the winter. Service can be slow, but you are in the south.
(3)Cristine M.
Good breakfast place. Kinda small. I cant comment on the shrimp and grits being that i'm allergic to shellfish but i had the western omelette and it was good! Bacon is well done and not chewy and rubbery which i hate!
(3)Dana L.
Great Blueberry pancakes and good service. 'Nuf said!
(4)Sunshine W.
Our hotel we were staying at didn't have a restaurant so I went here to pick up some breakfast for the family. it was EXCELLENT!!! I was in and out in no time. The waitresses and cashier were extremely friendly and made sure they included everything I needed and more. Excellent service and food.
(4)Nick S.
Pretty normal looking diner, but dirty none the less. Came here for breakfast, ordered a "chicken salad" which actually was some sandwich. When I asked what it was, the waiter smiled funny and said "oh yeah, thats the chicken salad." Also ordered a hot dog with sauerkraut, which was not the best, didn't even want to eat it. We had to simply leave, we were very dissatisfied, at least they didn't charge us for drinks, its the hospitality for why I give this place 2 stars instead of 1.
(2)Kerry T.
Stopped here on the way home from Kitty Hawk. I had eggs, hash browns, and corned beef hash. It tasted fine but was a bit on the greasy side- although it is a diner so should be expected. The hashbrowns tasted like bacon, which didn't bother me, but did ruin my SIL's breakfast since she doesn't eat pork. I tried a bite of the biscuit, which seemed to be one of their flagship foods. It's texture and density were nice but the flavor was bland. I imagine there is better breakfast fare to be had in an area with so many dining options.
(2)Jenn M.
Most amazing biscuits EVER! If you're camping and need something other than oatmeal and hotdogs this is where it's at! We ate here twice in one weekend and would have gone a third time if the work week didn't get in the way.
(5)Gina R.
If Guy Fieri hasn't been to Grits Grill with Food Network's Diners, Drive-ins and Dives yet, he should definitely visit. Real southern cooking, great grits and gravy, biscuits were outstanding, service was down home and the price was just right. A must visit while in Nags Head.
(5)Christofer E.
It's not a 5 star restaurant, but the food is good and the establishment is clean. Price is reasonable and good service. As an added bonus, for those who like breakfast at all hours of the day, this joint is for you!
(3)Wanda J.
Biggest Biscuits in OBX ! Stopped in for breakfast during our visit to OBX. In a strip mall off the highway in Nags Head. Cute like Mel's Diner with 50's style table and chairs. Seems a popular place, quick service, friendly and good food. Nothing fancy but you'll leave stuffed..watch out for those biscuits !
(4)Miles W.
Awesome place. We went here both mornings on my bachelors party and had a great time. Good pancakes, grits and its locally owned so the money supports the economy. The management was very nice. A big shout out to Patrick for his local nightlife suggestions.
(5)Chris J.
Great breakfast! Been coming here for years. Kids love the pancakes...parents love the eggs & biscuits. And the grits are the best. Good food prices. Large portions. Drinks are overpriced.
(4)Chocolate T.
Perfect breakfast stop. Bacon, eggs, french toast, pancakes. I haven't gone wrong here yet.
(4)Estee W.
Food was good, but service was terrible and the restaurant was dirty.
(2)Katie B.
Food was great, but the service was terrible. Our server only had a few tables of customers but she was rarely seen. The greeter took our drink order and then our server finally came to the table. Then she didn't reappear for 10 minutes to take our order. She didn't come by the table but once or twice and several at the table were wanting refills on coffee but it took a long time for her to come by. They do not have seating available for parties larger than four. Six of us were crammed into a table for four. With parties of six or more, they add a mandatory 20% tip which was not warranted for the service we received.
(2)Cathy M.
The breakfast was very good and reasonably priced. The pancakes were very tasty. The downside is that it takes a long time to receive your food after ordering. At least it's fresh!
(4)Charlie F.
I was working in the area and went here for lunch - arrived around 11 am. There was a small group of people waiting outside. I entered the building and since I was by myself I was seated immediately. I ordered the Beach Burger with grits as the side . I mean it IS called the Grits Grill - had to try the namesake item! My meal was ready with little waiting. Nice plate presentation. Burger was an ample size. Grits were served steaming hot. The Grits were pretty good - I have had better grits at restaurants that advertise "stone ground grits" These are standard cooked grits done well. Burger was tasty. The place was rather busy and I felt the staff was doing a good job of keeping things moving.
(3)Tom B.
Decent place. i would go again and give it a go. PROS: Prices pretty reasonable Potions decent Biscuits were good! Service very friendly Son loved the pancakes CONS: Brother in Law got Steak and Eggs and steak was a bit off (note...server without question took it off the bill) Wife thought food was cold where mine was piping hot Sausage Gravy was just "OK".... I have to say.....I based it on reviews here raving about the place...an if you go, I don't think you will be disappointed....it's just....I didn't have the socks knocked off my feet. Like I said, I'd go again for the good service and decent food. Certainly deserves another go. Place is quick to serve too......wait time for food was NOT long.
(3)Christine F.
Fantastic breakfast spot if you're staying on OBX. Visited twice while vacationing last week. Both breakfasts were cooked perfectly and portions are very generous. Diner atmosphere and prices. Very pleased, would definitely return during next trip to OBX.
(4)Denny K.
It's early in the day and you're cruisin' along "The Croatan Highway" otherwise known as "The Bypass." Somewhere near MilePost 14 (that's how the locals locate a place along the OBX) you get a hankerin' for breakfast, maybe a big breakfast. Well, don't go west young man even if the music suggests you can get your "kicks on Route 66." Instead, turn into the parking lot at the Outer Banks Mall and "get your fill at Nags Head's Grits Grill." They advertise breakfast "all day long" which means from open at 6:00 in the morning until close at 2:00 in the afternoon...so not quite all day. Don't be surprised if you have to wait in line because this IS a popular place with locals and tourists alike. Wait staff hustles and bustles with friendly chatter and great service for everyone, checking and refilling drinks and making sure all is to your liking. The grub: downright good homemade food. I've tried many of Grits Grill's breakfast items and have never been disappointed - from eggs, moist and beautifully scrambled, to fried-just-right, to easy over or sunny-side-up. I've had their bacon, sausage, and sausage gravy. Most recently I had their creamed-chip beef on a big, tender and flavorful buttermilk biscuit. (The chipped beef was generous in the serving portion - see pic I posted with my check-in) but it was a tad just short on flavor--just a bit bland. The hash browns were cooked to perfection with a great, beautifully browned crunchy crust and creamy potato interior. Delicious, but a bit too strong on aroma of the onion (reminded me of a regular white rather than a sweet Vidalia or Mayan). Flavor was still great. Grits....yes, the grits are great: cream, buttery, and served steaming hot. Lots more to choose from for lunch or brunch, but breakfast is my meal of choice here. (I was sorry to read some of the few negative comments by a few reviewers. Their experiences simply have not been mine or those of my family and friends who've eaten here. So I highly recommend that you try Grits Grill and see for yourself.)

I use to like this place. Went there Sunday AM, Labor Day weekend. Sat at counter and watched 3 short order cooks (all Hispanic ) they used their bare hands for picking up all the raw ingredients and wiped their hands on their soiled aprons. One woman would dip the bread in the raw egg mixture, wipe hand on apron, turn the French toast with hands as it cooked and then used hands to place on plate while wiping her hands on apron, all the while turning pancakes. And putting half cooked sausage on the grill with her hands. These cooks never washed hands the whole hour I watched. This is just awful. I plan on reporting to the local Health Dept.

Went here for breakfast on a Wednesday. The service was great, staff very friendly and food was delicious. The daily specials were also a nice touch and I got the farmers omelette and even added a few toppings. Girlfriend got the waffle special and said it was very good.
