I love locopops! I came here with college friends for the nostalgia of the Locopops stand that used to be my favorite place to get a creamy popsicle after a long exam on Duke's West campus. Locopops is conveniently located near 9th street with a small but adequate parking lot and a bright interior. I ordered the "special" flavor Thai Rice Pudding and my husband got a Cookies and Cream popsicle. The creamy popsicles are $5 and the fruity/sorbet-y popsicles are a bit less. We ate our popsicles outside where I was delighted to find old freezers repurposed into garden planters with blooming flowers overflowing out of them. The Thai Rice Pudding popsicle was delicious with a dash of cinnamon and some other spices (cloves?), didn't melt too fast, but fast enough that I had to slurp a little to get every bit of the creamy drops. I definitely recommend it. My husband's Cookies and Cream was also good with big chunks of Oreos---always a classic Locopop flavor. We will be back for more Locopops!

Second to none. These popsicles convinced me to move to Durham from California. There is literally nothing more you could want in a popsicle - they have cream flavors and fruit flavors, and with each one you read, your face will get increasingly animated. Mexican Salted Caramel? Passionfruit Mojito? The cookies and cream flavor has giant Oreo chunks in it. They taste homemade. They are homemade. Locopops is everything that is wonderful about Durham. Forget paying 50 cents an ounce for froyo (although that has its time and place) or falling into a disastrous sugar coma after a too-sweet ice cream cone. This is where it's at.

After looking for a yummy dessert place I found Locopops, close to the 9th Street district in Durham. I was super excited about this place and it did not disappoint. The place is small, afterall all of their inventory is just a bunch of freezers filled with hundreds of frozen treats (~$2.50/pop). I was pretty thirsty and the cashier recommended I get the pomegranate and spicy mango to compliment my thirst. Pomegranate was fruity and hit the spot. The spicy mango was definitely unique and you don't quite taste the spice until the the end, after the ice cream dissolves. I probably wouldn't order the mango again because of the after-kick, I just like my mangoes sweet only. Looking forward to returning to try their dozens of other flavors. Weather was in the low 80s so we were able to enjoy the outdoor seating although my second popsicle did start to melt before I could devour it. My (mexican) friend got the Mexican chocolate and he said it was pretty on point with authentic mexican chocolate... whatever that means? He wouldn't go into details.. he said I had to "experience it" for translation. It's definitely on my list to try next! Parking wasn't so obvious. I missed the lot where you're allowed to park in and instead parked across the street in the church parking lot (even though there were warning signs for towing). The cashier told me that other staff park there with no problem but she wasn't 100% sure because she doesn't have a car herself. I loved this place so much that I may consider buying a dozen and storing them in my freezer for a late night treats. (The only challenge with that is the popsicles arent vaccum sealed, from the photo I posted you'll see its loose ended and exposed) Hopefully they don't melt before then since the weather had been scorching! 7/31/2015 - Returned to Lolopops and got the Mexican Chocolate - sooo good I could eat two! Also picked up a rewards card since I'm becoming a regular aka addict! 8 stamps so far and it's only a matter of time before I clinch the most check-ins! =)

Perfect for the summer time. Super cute location, very kid and dog friendly. The popsicles have such a great variety between juices and cream, which unique flavors like: cardamom latte, and coconut mojito; as well as more tradition flavors like: cookies n' cream. Here's a tip that I learned from the employees. When you are trying to open the plastic, turn the popsicle around. Place the stick in your mouth, cover the plastic with your lips and blow until the vacuum seal has popped. Then take the wrapper off. Sorry if it sounds super dirty, it works nonetheless! I will definitely be making more visits here

What can you say about Loco Pops...... Excellent local flavor small town atmosphere and great evening seating. Me and my wife love to go down to Loco's after dinner and enjoy some dessert. We love this place all of the flavors are good. I especially like the chocolate brownie and the malted milk ball.
(4)Dinky B.
This place was hopping! They have pops for kids, pups, and vegans. Only one girl was working in front and she was fast, informative and friendly even when the line was out the door. I had the mexican chocolate- Delish! Especially, if you like chocolate, cinnamon and clove. Mmm

I Love Locopops is a homemade popsicle/dessert place in Durham that focuses on natural, quality flavors that cater to both the young and young at heart in a child friendly environment. My Overall Rating - 5 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - One thing I loved about Locopops is that this is NOT your hipster hangout. As you make your way in, you'll notice small tables & chairs for kids, and tons of artwork hung on the walls from local schools, customers, kids, etc. I like this because they know that the best customers aren't foodies who are ok with dropping $2.50 per popsicle (paleta), but instead the kid who takes a bite out of a unique, creamy Sea Salt Caramel popsicle and then sports a grin from ear to ear. Ok, maybe that was me too. 1 Star. Service - Super nice people. We came on a weekday afternoon and it wasn't too crowded. The I Love Locopops staff took the time to walk us through the flavors, make suggestions, and encouraged us to be bold in our choice. We spent some time chatting about their process of making the pops & it's obvious the have a true passion around this. 1 Star. Food - We ended up choosing 3 flavors: Sea Salt Caramel, Cookies & Cream, and Root Beer Float. All three were fantastic, with the first two being cream based. I loved the Sea Salt Caramel. The salt wasn't too overbearing and made a great balance to the caramel. The Root Beer Float tasted exactly like a frozen root beer float, so if you're fan of that flavor you'll be happy to get it in frozen form. Also, the pops were $2.50 for each, which if you compare to buying the mass-produced popicles at the super market it's expensive, but to me it's the perfect price for a high quality, unique, satisfying cold dessert experience. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - No doubt about it. The next time I'm in Durham I'm going to reserve some time to visit I Love Locopops. They have seasonal & daily flavors along with best sellers no doubt I'll be back. 1 Star. My Yelp Rating Scale (Sum of all parts): 1 Star - Atmosphere - Is it a cool dive? Perhaps an upscale place? No matter the type, atmosphere plays a big part and I'll give a star if I like it or thinks it has great charm. 1 Star - Service - You can have a great meal with bad service. But that's also what can make a five star joint drop to four. It's important to the dining experience that service is great and on point. 2 Stars - Food - I'll award up to two stars for the food, since this is the main reason we dine out. Sometimes the extra star is given for value, but it's really all about the food. 1 Star - Will I come back? - If I know for a fact I'll return, I'll give this a star. A place has to make an impression for me to return. Each Category can be given up to 1 star except food (2 stars) because I consider all these categories important to the overall dining experience. I will sum them up to provide my final Yelp score.

Cookies and cream. Hands down my favorite popsicle. So smooth and rich and they have full Oreos inside! I've eaten five in one sitting - no joke. I also love their strawberry and cream one too. Not too sweet and doesn't taste artificial. Mexican chocolate is nice (has this lovely cinnamon kick). Pomegranate tangerine was alright (others love it; I'm just personally ambivalent to sorbets haha). LocoPops are definitely a treat!
(5)Amanda P.
This is a place that serves ice cream on a stick. That's it. I appreciate it when businesses do one thing and do it well, and Locopops has mastered the art of ice cream on a stick. There are lots of flavors to choose from, including vegan and gluten free options. I had a chocolate brownie popsicle, and my husband got cookies and cream. They were both delicious. The brownie pieces tasted fresh, not like the dense clumps of chocolate you get in store-bought "brownie" ice cream. And for under $5 for two pops, the price was right too.

I visited Locopops for the first time today and I am already looking forward to going back soon to try some more flavors! It was a hot day and I was in the area, so I decided to head to Locopops to cool off. There were lots of interesting flavors to choose from, but I felt like something fruity, so I went with one of their specials of the day, strawberry lemonade. It was very refreshing and very tasty. I think it is cool how they also have pup pops for dogs, next time I will bring my dog to enjoy one. I had three kids with me who all tried different flavors, including cookies and cream (with big pieces of Oreos inside- yum), butter pecan and strawberries and cream. I like that they have different sizes of popsicles available including the baby pops, which are just smaller portions - the perfect size for the 4 year old that was there with me! It's a small shop but they have benches outside as well as tables for days when it isn't too hot. The prices are pretty reasonable. Definitely a nice treat for a hot summer day!

Usually I am not a big sweets oriented person, but with Locopops I make an exception. These water based and/or cream based popsicles have a little more going for them than the average ones you'd buy in the freezer section of your local supermarket. I've enjoyed Locopops both from their mobile cart and their Durham location and I am very satisfied with this treat. Locopops really stand out as having unique flavor combinations and tasty innovative twists on the popsicle. I tend to stay more with the water based ones than the cream ones, just a personal preference. My faves have been the Pomegranate-Tangerine and the Grape-Limeade combos, yum yum and yum. I hear buzz that the Mexican Chocolate one is pretty popular actually. From their extensive choice of unique flavors and combinations, there is one that is bound to be up your alley. Great variety and you just can't beat the tasty results. Bottom line: Awesome unique flavor combinations and a large variety of choices on their menu make this popsicle stop the way to go to satisfy your sweet tooth. I am definitely loco for some Locopops, a great frozen treat!
(5)Kristen K.
My mother in law has been talking about this place for awhile now and we finally decided to stop in. She takes my nephew about every week - she lives within walking distance - and raves about how good it is. She recommended the mexican chocolate but quickly remembered it has cinnamon in it - which is a DEFINITE NO for me...i HATE cinnamon...so I was a little disappointed because I've heard how good it is. I opted for the strawberry and cream and it was pretty good. The hubs got chocolate brownie and loved it. It was an easy walk from my mother in law's house which is AWESOME. who doesn't love a nice walk after dinner to get dessert!!

Locopops serves up some delicious treats for your sweet tooth! I can foresee coming here many more times to try out more of their interesting popsicle flavors. It was a pretty warm day and I was in search of something sweet and cool. I was leaning towards just getting a cup of froyo and then I discovered Locopops was on my way home thanks to Yelp. Popsicles sounded like an interesting alternative to the usual froyo so I decided to pop in. They've got a great selection of cream based or water based popsicles and really creative flavors too. I decided to try a brownie chocolate popsicle and got a mexican chocolate popsicle to take home. I looved the brownie chocolate popsicle-- if you're a lover of chocolate I think you'll enjoy this one. The chunks of soft brownie embedded in the creamy chocolate are just delicious! I'm excited to try the Mexican Chocolate popsicle waiting for me in the freezer when my next sweet craving hits. They had some interesting seasonal flavors too like Apple Pie, Pumpkin Spice, and Chocolate Chile. I'm hoping to visit again soon before they stop selling the Apple Pie so I can try that one! The prices are right and easy on your wallet at $2.25 a pop ;) I like that they sell baby pops so you can get a smaller portion (and it's only a $1.50) too. Can't wait to come back!
(5)Viv G.
We came here on a drizzly day, and the store was completely empty, but the popsicles were still so magical! I can imagine on hot, sunny days the place would be packed. The flavors were really unique. I had a lemongrass one, and my husband had a miso one (that he was not the biggest fan of) but I love the idea of a gourmet popsicle shop!
(5)Arvind B.
Now this is the perfect ice cream place. Had their Mexican Chocolate. Not super sweet, not super cinnamonny. Perfect thickness. Plus they have pops for dogs! Beef and Chicken flavour. They just need to add a bacon flavoured pop for dogs and they will get 5 stars on the puppy version of yelp. Plus just 3.50 for a pint. Wish I could take it on the plane back to Philly. I hope they make it big and then open up a Philly location
(5)Anonymous P.
Mom and I got each a Popsicle here tonight! Mine was a fudge brownie one and hers was pomegranate tangerine! We loved them! Totally coming again this week!
(5)Tierney F.
Love love love. Only in Durham :). Lots of options both creamy and ice Locopops. They are only a couple of dollars so a nice cheap treat. My fav is cookies and cream because they have large chunks of oreo and usually even a whole oreo in it. But mexican chocolate, and strawberries and cream are also awesome (clearly I prefer the creamy pops). They do a lot of crazy flavors... and out of the many many times I have gone I have found one I didn't like (something tomato.. so don't get that one) but most of the time they are great. They even have one for a dog! They are frozen beef or chicken with a rawhide as the stick.
(4)Lauren R.
You can find Locopops in all sorts of businesses around Durham and at a lot of events, but there's something charming about going to the store, especially the original location. It's not in the most picturesque area of town, but it does have a few nice tables outside which are perfect to enjoy your popsicles at. A lot of the reviews rave about the Mexican chocolate, so I want to put in a good word for the water-based flavors! They're a bit better for you than the cream ones, and are honestly just as good! They are fruity and delicious without making you feel guilty. And, as much as you think eating a bright red popsicle will stain your mouth, it will really only make your lips a bit rosier--none of their popsicles have the effect of making you look like a kid in a candy store with a blue or green or red tongue! They aren't cheap, but considering all the other types of desserts you can go out for--frozen yogurt, cupcakes, Ben & Jerry's, etc.--they aren't expensive either, especially for how good they are!

Yum! Thank goodness our fire alarm went off in our apartment complex and forced us out of the house on this rainy Monday. As we drove around aimlessly I remembered I wanted to try this place out. Girl behind the counter was really sweet and informative and went through the listing and hubby finally decided on the key lime flavor of the month while I went against my initial default (cookies and cream anything) since the chocolate brownie sounded delightful. I'm glad I didn't go with my gut because it was delicious. Chunks of brownie blended perfectly with the creamy goodness on a stick. Hubs loved his key lime but it had little crust, though he didn't complain. Can't wait to try another flavor (although our first two choices are hard to pass up now that we enjoyed them so much).
(4)Stephanie S.
Just had my first Locopops experience and I am pleased. Fast service, good recommendations, and a delicious paleta. We ordered a chocolate brownie and a cookies and cream (big chunks of almost-whole Oreos!), both of which were delicious. I will be back to try some other flavors. Though the milk-based took the cake this time, I will eventually have to test out the highly recommended water-based flavors.
(4)Alicia P.
I just moved to Durham and have heard quite a bit about Locopops... I was so excited to try it out with a few friends and I can just say we were not disappointed! I have never had a Popsicle with so much flavor... And that didn't melt all over my hand!! We tried Mango Chile, Pomegranate Tangerine and Peach (can't remember the whole name) and they were all fantastic! The place is really cute and had a lot of character, although maybe looks a bit sketchy upon first arrival. The people working the night we were there were super helpful in helping us pick out our Popsicles, as some of them definitely sound a little weird in their combinations (i.e. Mango Chile) and I'm so glad we listened to their recommendations. We will definitely be back as I'm sure we will now have regular Popsicle cravings after this experience!

"Awesome popsicles- cream or water-based." As ~40 reviews already attest, this place rocks. In addition to getting Locopops from the stores locally, they are found at various other places around town- I see them at Duke on the Plaza and in the Faculty Club snack bar, downtown at Parker & Otis, etc. The staff at the stores are always friendly and efficient. And the product is priced great for a treat- a refreshing and relatively filling snack for under $3 with tax! What could be better? Today, I attended a UYE where we sampled all 9 current cream-based flavors and voted on our favorites. Among their "Regulars", the winner was chocolate brownie (which was great, though personally I favored cookies & cream). Among the "Guest Stars" (that rotate periodically), the winner was chocolate curry (which again was great & unusual, though personally I favored the strawberry tangerine vanilla yogurt one, which comes as a hexagonal cylinder in shape). When people ask what the "must try" places unique to our area are, and for any age, this place always pops in my head in the top 3 (if not #1). As good as it gets.
(5)Chris K.
How have I not reviewed them before?!! I LOVE locopops! The textures and the flavor combinations are magnificent! I've been to their other locations and even bought them in specialty stores and at the farmers market, but it always feels good to visit their original store (well kind of!) where it all started!
(5)Tori H.
Two words : Mexican Chocolate. If you haven't been here, you haven't lived. Luckily I read yelp and re-discovered my love for a popsicle. Thank u. I will say the tip jar is weird ... The cashier doesnt do anything but reach into a cooler....
(5)Matty B.
Locopops, you're so Durham and I'm pretty sure you do know it. I never knew gourmet popsicles existed when I was growing up (thanks a lot, Mom) but I have since come to enjoy them in my semi-grown up state. Nothing pretentious about this little shop, but don't let the shabby appearance dissuade you from enjoying some frozen goodness. Selections from both the regular menu and the guest stars delicacies are sure to enjoy with my faves being the Mexican chocolate, mojito, and mango chile. Plus there are pops for your canine companion as well! All in all, not a bad way to get a taste of Durham and/or to cool off on one of those intensely hot summer days.
(4)Sara R.
Loco pops taste much better than ice cream. Until now I haven't had any flavored I did not like :)
(5)Naomi K.
Um, delicious! Perfect way to cool off on a super hot summer day. Unique constantly new rotating flavors, with a few constant favorites, makes this place dynamic. Watch out for the little kiddie rush right after school lets out. The parking lot can get a bit tricky with the soccer mom's and their minivans. I like the locality because it's on my way home from parking over on the med campus. Sure beats walking all the way to the Bryan Center.
(4)Liz B.
Locopops strikes me as quintessentially Durham, and I often take visitors from out of town to this place to show them what Durham is about. It's great to see people from different backgrounds congregate and happily lick their popsicles. I like the kind of grungy vibe of the Hillsborough Rd location, too. I have to give it only 4 stars, though, because Nashville's Mexican popsicle mecca, Las Paletas, was superior. (Sigh. I miss that place so much). Locopops, in comparison, have a grittier texture, and are often too icy/hard, snapping off into crunchy chunks with each bite. The pops from Las Paletas were smoother and slightly softer, which I preferred. The Locopop flavors are also hit-and-miss. The crema and agua standards, especially the Mexican Chocolate and Cookies-and-Cream, are pretty good. A lot of the guest flavors were, well...rather flavorless. I have frequently picked up an exotic-sounding pop with almond milk or lavender or green tea or whatever, only to find...that I didn't taste much other than ice when I bit into it. Meh. Again, I never struck out with Las Paletas; all of their pops were bursting with flavor, even rose petal and other funkier flavors. I'm a frequent customer and it's one of my favorite hangouts in Durham, and the pops are mostly good, but...not the best.
(4)Lydia N.
Dear Locopops, please come to NYC, because getting to Durham takes too long. But I would, if I could, just to get me some Locopops. I don't really know what the philosophy behind these guys is, but they make amazing popsicles. You can' go wrong with any of their flavors (and they have a LOT of flavors). The creamy ones are akin to eating a frozen chocolate bar - but with much less guilt, more enjoyment, and more zing. Their water based ones are really refreshing and have a delicate flavor.
(5)Arika S.
Cute little popsicle shop. Prices are cheap and the flavors are good. The only issue is the size.. it's pretty small inside. Try the strawberries and cream.
(4)Scott A.
Love this place. My wife and I take our kids there every couple of weekends. I pretty much stick with the chocolate brownie locopop but they always have new and interesting flavors. A very yummy and inexpensive treat and the staff are always friendly.
(5)Jamie R.
Glad I listened to the reviews and got the Mexican Chocolate. It was absolutely delicious! Like eating cake batter :) My daughter loved the chocolate brownie & I have to say my dog seemed to thoroughly enjoy the beef flavored pup-pop. Make it a priority to visit Locopops - you won't regret it!!
(5)Olivia H.
There are few things in this universe that make me happy like popsicles, and Locopops has elevated the art to a new and epic level. Either fruit or cream-based, the flavors are eclectic enough for even the most pretentious foodie, but so classic that the less-than-5 crowd gets just as big of a kick. Hint: also follow them on Facebook to hear about top-secret, limited flavors like Chocolate Stout :swoon:
(5)Marigold S.
Creative, Delicious, something for everyone, Dogs, Lactose Intolerant, I wish i could take every Young and Elderly person I know, But I just moved to Durham, so until i know somebody, I will be getting fat an happy off the COOKIES AND CREAM, One word, Drool. At Least I'll be riding my bike there.
(5)Adri T.
Yummy yummy yummy yummy! What a great way to cool off on a hot summer afternoon! We were on a mission to find Locopops. The GPS told us we arrived, but we totally drove right past the place in it's unassuming strip mall. We made a uey and whipped into the parking lot. We headed inside and were overwhelmed with the smell of cleaning products. Once my sinuses adjusted I was able to begin to take focus on all of the scrumptious flavors of pops available on the white boards. The flavors listed were a melange of delights! Strawberry balsamic, tamarind lemonade, cookies and cream, mojito etc! Knowing they would all be good we placed our orders. We were asked if we wanted a regular or a large, and were shown the minimal difference in size. The pops are held in clear plastic "wrappers" that you pull off before savoring pure deliciousness! The cookies and cream pop was oober creamy and full of chocolatey cookie chunks! Yummy! The strawberry balsamic pop was tangy and sweet and super summery! Yummy! Both pops were fantastic! Take a cooler and load up so you can enjoy these pops on the east side of town! (FYI - For you plastic only carriers - Cash only - so hit the ATM before you arrive!)
(4)Betty Y.
This place is just so quintessentially Durham. Delicious popsicles in creative flavors -- enough to satisfy any foodie -- with a grungy unmistakably local air. Every flavor I've ever tried has been awesome (although I'm partial to the cream popsicles), the people are always super friendly, and it's beyond adorable that they have art from local schools decorating the walls! A must-try. P.S. To people who are complaining about screaming kids in a POPSICLE SHOP -- I mean, c'mon.
(5)Sonia C.
Great concept, interesting flavours, lots of variety. I didn't try any of the creamy popsicles, but I did try a few of the water-based ones, including: - cherry hibiscus: Delicious! Refreshing! Tastes like tart cherry! - cherry pomegranate: Delicious! Refreshing! Tastes like tart cherry! - strawberry lime: Delicious! Refreshing! Tastes like tart strawberry! In summary, it seems like one flavor tends to overpower the others in their dual flavor combos. My friends tried and reported: - mojito: Tastes just like lime, not so much like mint - mango chile : A rare example where you can taste both flavors - cafe latte: Tastes like coffee ice cream - cookies and cream: Tastes like watery milk - tangerine basil: Tangerine overpowers basil - tangerine pomegranate: Tart tangerine - apple pie: Tastes just like apple pie, complete with chunks of crust Decor is bare and minimal. Just a few freezers and a couple of chairs. This is apparently the way LocoPops likes to decorate, since the location on Franklin Street is even more sparse. It's kind of like they moved into the location and decided to spend $0 on decorating. I'm not complaining though, I do like their fresh-tasting popsicles. I also like how their regular flavors come in large and small sizes (though their seasonal flavors only come in medium). However, I do wish that they could leave some chunks of fruit in their popsicles. Personal preference, but I do like my popsicles chunky and fruity. No jokes please.
(4)Lauren P.
Yay for Locopops! I don't know how this got to be such a Durham thing, but dang, do I love Locopops. If you don't know what a Locopop is then here's the quick rundown - it's a fruit or cream based ice pop on a stick. It's flavors can range anywhere from Mexican Chocolate to Mango Lime Chile. There are even beef & chicken Locopops for the doggies. It's a quick treat that really isn't the worst thing you could do to yourself as far as desserts go. Locopops come in two sizes. They used to be called "small" and "large" but according to the guy who was working last night, that caused too many arguments between children and parents. Yes, parents act like children when they can't get their large Locopop apparently. So now they are available in "Kid Size" and "Big Kid Size." But the sizes are just the same. Tip: Can't get the plastic wrap off your Locopop? Turn it around and stick the wood stick and open plastic end in your mouth. Bite down with your lips on the plastic and blow into the Locopop. The plastic will pop right off the pop making it easy to remove!
(4)Claudine D.
Love, love, love Locopops! Mexican chocolate is my favorite, and it makes me oh so happy. Your doggie can also share in the joy with pup pops: chicken or beef flavored for just $2!
(5)Melissa P.
Quaintly, quintessentially Durham. :) You have to try something unique if you venture over there. I was disappointed once when a date ordered strawberry. Bor-ing!
(5)Minnow N.
It's good but really ask what flavors youre getting. my mojito was quite tart and i like my mojitos limey but not that limey. i like them more rummy and more minty but it was still refreshing on a hot day. plus they have adorable adoptable dogs on their wall!
(4)Rebecca T.
I've only been to the cart on Duke's campus... + I never knew that popsicles could be soooo delicious! I go for the water based ones since it seems more refreshing. + fun flavors like cherry lime, pomegrante, mojito, cookies and cream... They'll have a flavor for whatever mood you're in....
(4)Jeff G.
Locopops has its pros and cons... Pros: Great creativity - a thumbs up for that Perfect portion size and priced right Variety for all tastes Cons: No decor at all It almost had a dirty feel Screaming kids running around Don't get me wrong, I'll be back to try some new flavors.
(3)Panda B.
Fantastic popcicles!! Had the Mexican chocolate and cookies n creme (w/huge pieces of cookie). Gotta check them out. Wish they hade one closer to home in Ohio.
(5)Samantha T.
Unique flavors - the store front was closed but their mobile unit was out and about and he found us on a rainy afternoon as we stood outside the closed storefront with sad faces. He had a limited selection, including cherry lime, strawberry guava, banana cardamon pomegranate, chocolate coconut almond, nanna nilla and dark chocolate mocha. I have the nanna nilla which was banana and nilla wafers in a popsicle. Size was standard for a popsicle, $2 each. All the flavors were good as my friends and I traded to get tastes of them all, but don't know if I'd go on a hunt for just the popsicles in the future - maybe if I was in the area doing something else as well.
(3)Serena S.
This place makes me smile on the inside and outside. When I'm going there, I get as giddy as a 5 year old kid. Locopops' take on the traditional Mexican paleta gives even the most authentic of Mexican paletas a run for their money - and I use to live in what I called "Little Mexico" with fruit carts, ice cream carts, taco trucks galore. Their Chocolate Curried Coconut flavor is orgasmic. I was just sad that it only came in the kid-size and not the big-kid size when I went. I've also had the Chili Mango, also very good. Their Mexican Chocolate is a flavor that's pretty much in stock all the time and it's definitely delicious if you're into Mexican chocolate specifically. Mexican chocolate isn't super sweet like the chocolate most people are use to. I love paletas because of their consistency. The consistency of the paleta is what makes it a paleta and not a popsicle, making Locopops absolute perfection. Love it!
(5)Jeff A.
Really good place for a snack. The popsicles are almost always delicious, and there are new flavors just about every day. I do wish they were bigger - if you go there hungry, you'll probably leave hungry... or just do what I do and buy two!
(4)Sharp H.
Great popsicles! They use local ingredients to make unique and delicious flavors which you just aren't going to encounter elsewhere. Both their water and cream based pops are great but I'd give a special shout-out to their Mexican chocolate and strawberries and cream. The location does leave something to be desired, as it's basically just an empty room with a cash register and freezers. But since you're probably going to get these on a hot day, you can just take a walk while you're eating them. If you're on West Campus you can also get these at the Locopops cart, which is real convenient if you're just hanging out on campus for whatever reason.

I went here almost 4 years ago and remember it still today! They are SO SO SO SO good and I wish I had something like this closer to me in SC! I was in a group of over 20 high school students and we LOVED the gourmet popsicles. The staff was friendly and helpful and didn't mind serving a huge group of indecisive HS seniors--I think that says a lot!

Locopops, I love you! The idea, execution, even the branding of this company impressed me. I was able to sample the mexican chocolate, which I was hoping would have some chile in it, but it was good nonetheless. Also, the cherry-lime was wonderful- not too sweet and the flavors were well balanced. But my favorite was chocolate-lavender, which was nice and creamy and not too floral. Despite the unseasonably cold October weather, my family and I really enjoyed my pops. At $2 or $3 bucks each, they won't hurt your wallet either. Mark my words- popsicles are the new cupcakes.

"Wait until I take you to Locopops; ...it is A-MAZING!" my NC transplant friend exclaimed. On a 90 degree spring day, how can you go wrong? I tried 6, and probably consumed 3 popsicles in on sitting. Yes, thats right. Three. Mojito, Jalepeno-Lemonade, and Black Raspberry Mango (or some derivative of those flavors). Quite great, actually. Reminded me a lot of Molly Moons back home in Seattle. Business savvy women starting a place of their own with local sustainability in mind. Not much for atmosphere or a place to really hang out - sort of sterile inside, but I really like the concept and the fact that its not terribly over priced. They are sticking to one product that they do well. Can we have one on the West Coast?

"um... you might want to get two, or four," i was advised, as i took in the wall-covering menu at locopops. while others in my party might have second-guessed this recommendation i happily took it to heart and proceeded to order three: chocolate earl-grey, mango chili, and pomegranate tangerine. the only thing that stopped from from getting four or six was the cash-only policy: we had to pool our money to purchase our pops, emptying change out of pockets and digging around the bottom of my bag to make sure we could all get at least two locopops each. i know, you're probably still skeptical. what's with all the love for a popsicle shop? let me tell you: the name doesn't lie. these pops are CRAZY good. the chocolate earl-grey was fudgy with a hint of bergamot, almost like pudding on a stick. the mango chili made my tongue tingle but soothed with the mango, leading me to conclude that this may be THE best pop combination ever. and, not to be outdone, the pomegranate tangerine was fruity, slightly tangy, and infinitely more satisfying than consuming both fruits in their original form. locopops come in three sizes, priced accordingly at $1.50-3. there are about a dozen each of the crema-based and agua-based pop flavors to choose from, as well as a few different specials. do take the advice i was given and get at least four on your first visit - you'll be surprised to find that they're gone before they even have a chance to melt!

Wonderful flavors. One of the things I miss about Durham.

The popsicles are delicious here and so creative. I don't think I've ever seen any other shop that has so many unusual flavors. I think they also rotate the menu once in a while. It is a little bit in the middle of nowhere, and the shop outside looks a bit sketchy, but the popsicles refreshingly make up for any inconvenience. It's been a while since I've been, but I remember the brownie one having actual pieces of brownies in it and the spicy one being surprisingly refreshing.

The stark minimalism of this place is delicious. This location is composed of a good sized room with two coolers, (one with cream-based pops, one with water-based pops), a white board with the gamut of flavors available and a smiling face to reach into the respective cooler and retrieve the flavor of your liking. I guess the complexity is left to the flavor of the pops. The flavors, as one section of the white board explains, meld the traditions of mexican pops with a new twist. Flavors like Cherry Hibiscus and Cherry Pomegranate make this place worth coming back to over and over again.

So in contradiction to my '08 review that says this is in an odd part of Durham you'd never have occasion to walk past, I can now boast that while strolling from my house to Duke Gardens, this little luxury is along the way! It has been quite some time since I've stopped in on the original location, and it was a treat introducing our out-of-town guests to the spot. I opted for a water-based grapefruit mint, which was as refreshing as it sounds, while hubby had the cream-based plum and chocolate chip (sounds atrocious. Actuality: awesome). Doggie devoured a pup pop (comes in chicken or beef) on a rawhide. Minus a star because the prices have gone up... nothing totally outrageous, especially given the creative flavors they continue to bust out; but c'mon, it's still a popsicle!

While visiting my mom in Durham I made my mom take me to this shop just based on the look of it! And then again 2 days later. It was great, they have some regular flavors but I had to go for the crazy ones. The Grapefruit basil was ok, not grapefruity enough for me, mango chile was hot and cold at the same time. My favorite was Apricot Chipotle and Latte, both of these are more creamy type pops. Yes, I got 2 pops per visit to Locopops, they were that good. Couldnt muster the cojones to try the Chocolate Bacon pop.... maybe next time! There is some seating inside and out, books and toys for kiddos. Its a pretty barebones place with one employee sitting in front of a huge white board (with the menu written on it), and a bunch of freezers. Nothin fancy but certainly delish!

Had such high hopes after reading reviews & talking with friends. Sadly, Locopops was a disappointment. We so wanted to love it! A lil tricky to find due to poor signage, but after a quick u-turn & GPS consult, we spotted it. Walked in & was overwhelmed by unpleasant smell, mentioned by another reviewer as cleaning products. My partner in crime said it smelled like a dishwasher. I thought it smelled like a Goodwill store. I had one of the creamy guest flavors, Plum Pink Pepper. The taste worked fine... nice balance of flavors, lovely solid, creamy texture, etc. It was definitely an interesting taste experience, which I enjoy. But it wasn't, er, yummy. Not bad, but not something I'd ever really need to try again. Couldn't actually finish my popsicle... 2/3 of the way through I ran out of enthusiasm altogether. I prefer my dessert to be sweet & delicious, not "interesting". :) My guy tried 2 flavors, Mojito (non-creamy) & Sweet Corn (creamy). Mojito was the best we tried, refreshing & light... definitely mostly lime-flavored. Sweet Corn was just odd in both flavor & texture. As with the PPP described above, it was balanced in taste & not altogether icky, just not super-delicious. Locopops... we so wanted to love you. I may return to try another flavor or 2; perhaps better luck next time? Either way, something needs to be done about the off-putting smell in this place. Very unappetizing. :(

Sometimes it's the simple concepts that are among the best. I'm partial to the cream-based pops - though I go for the mango chile pop sometimes (be prepared the spice builds as you eat it). The neighborhood is great for walking and sitting outside.

There is nothing more refreshing than a Locopops. That's just a fact. I love the unique flavors, the nice staff, and their community involvement. I wish that parking was better at both locations I have been to but that's the only complaint I have. Great date place!
(5)Bob N.
Creative, clean flavors. Most recent favorite--lemon basil. Sweet, sour, and aromatic. Fantastic. I actually picked these up in the grocery rather than at their storefront as I have before. I have to say 5 stars, "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" because, in fact, these are the best Popsicles I've ever had.

Great popsicles.

Very unique business!!! Fantastic FLAVORS!!!!!!! The Mexican Chocolate was fabulous!! The Mango Chile was also great. My daughter liked the Mojito pop. Fantastic that you also have pops for dogs: Pup Pops. We will definitely be back!!! :-)
(5)Holly W.
Absolutely love them. Never had a flavor I didn't like. Perfect dessert!

I have been visiting Locopops between 5-10 times a month for years now and thought it was time I posted a review. The flavors are creative and perfectly executed. After a long day of looking at houses, I love to take clients by for a treat. This stop always helps them fall in love with Durham. Don't miss the ice cream- creamy, delicious, and creative.
(5)Amelia J.
Really, really great! Tried the French Tart and the Ice Box Pie varieties at the suggestion of the staff. I'd definitely go back.
(4)Diana N.
Interesting local popsicle shop. My friend and I got four flavors to try: grapefuit basil (only tasted the grapefruit and it's quite bitter, but refreshing), strawberry oreo (creamy and delicious), asian plum (sweet and a bit tangy), lemon orange blossom (taste very flowery...kind of like that chinese soap). You know what flavor I want to try? Chocolate bacon. This shop is also down the street from Ninth Station. About $2 per pop.

OMG amazing i now live less than 2 blocks away and i will have to keep myself from going here everyday! today I tried cinnamon latte & orange guava. wowwwwww.

Gourmet popsicles? Yes. If you haven't heard of Locopops yet, please stop reading this and just go. If you have heard of Locopops and are looking for a reason to finally go try it out, I'm giving you permission to drop $2 on a popsicle that will change the way you look at the freezer aisle in your local grocery store. Locopops has expanded around the Triangle quickly and there's a reason. The quirky flavors are a novelty, but also really tasty. I'm a sucker for the Watermelon-Basil, and my wife is crazy over the Chocolate-Chili when she can actually find it. For those not looking to try to figure out how two disparate flavors can actually fit together so well, their normal flavors are still light years ahead of whatever you deem the competition to be. Occasionally, I even enjoy a regular strawberry or key lime popsicle. Also, if you're one of those crazy dog people...they make treats for your pets. I don't know why or how they work, but I'm guessing that your dogs will thank you...after all, none of their other flavors have turned out to be bad ideas yet.

At first, I thought - locopops? What's the big deal about popsicles? Turns out the big deal is that they're awesome. They specialize in paletas - Mexican-style popsicles. Flavors are too many to count, and include common American flavors like cookies and cream, but also a variety of fruits and spices (mango-chili, blueberry, hibiscus, etc). Flavors are either water or milk-based (I prefer the creamy ones myself...my last one was like a liquid brownie...yum), and prices are right where they need to be at $1-2. Locopop's also has locations in Chapel Hill and Hillsborough - you've got to check this unique dessert place out!

We love LocoPops tons! This is a simple but a great place. Each time we drive by, we just couldn't resist stopping here. We have a strategy in ordering different flavors. I get the basic flavor, and my wife orders the fancy one that attracts her eyes. She always ends up eating mine. There is a nice local Durham feel about this place. I prefer this one rather than the chapel hill one.

I'm from the Northwest and I absolutely can't deal with heat and humidity. During my recent visit to NC for a friend's wedding, I was dying. That is until I visited Locopops and had what was probably the best popsicle I've ever had in my life and was completely refreshed.

I recently got a chance to stop in to this heralded local establishment. I was admittedly leery of how much one could actually do with a Popsicle, but after a couple of trips in I'm a believer. Locopops is a very fun concept: natural ingredients, wide and expanding variety of flavors, and a unique product. All of that comes together for a mouthwatering taste that can briefly return the biggest of kids to summer times spent chasing the ice cream truck. I've tried two flavors so far: mojito and cookies 'n' creme. Both were quite tasty. This spot is nestled in what has become the fine foods hot spot of Chapel Hill. It is a secluded square set on Franklin Street. A great treat, no matter the season.

There is really nothing not to love about Locopops (especially now that there is another location in Chapel Hill). Cheap, simple, tasty treats done well - that's about it. Don't let that "paleta" name scare you - these are frozen pops you've enjoyed your whole life, just probably not in these flavor combinations. The ingredients are all fresh, and almost all are available in small or large sizes (I recommend getting 2 small pops for the sake of variety). I'm not as daring as some, and mainly stick to the water-based pops (Hibiscus; blueberry nectarine), but I have to say that most everything sounds/looks great. A word of advice - a friend once got a pop with tomato (perhaps a gazpacho pop?) and the tomato skin was not fully pureed, which made eating the pop a bit messy and unappetizing.

Locopops sells gourmet popsicles in either milk or water based flavors. They normally have about two dozen varieties that constantly change and range from standard fruits, to specialty Mexican flavors, to more exotic blends. First time I went there with some friends we tried about ten flavors (some were really good--blueberry, and some were just ok--ginger). They are reasonably priced and you can get two sizes of pops. Try some of the daring flavors. Decorations are sparse and there are some either really funny/disturbing/boring drawings on the walls, I can't decide which. But you come here to get the yummy desserts, and Locopops gets the job done.

Locopops = love! Not only does this tiny shop have a cute logo on the window to draw you in, but once you get in and see how cheap their prices are, and the fantastic variety of (yummy!) flavors they have - you'll be in love.
(5)Velina L.
I LOVE LOCOPOPS!! I haven't tried their milk-based popsicles, with flavors like chocolate-stout or cookies and cream, but their fruity, inventive water-based pops are outstanding! I especially love the thick mango-chili pop with its spicy kick, and the sweet, juicy lychee-lemongrass pop. No matter how much you suck on them, they never lose their flavor, since they're made of fruity puree. I could even eat two or three at the same time! I can't wait to go back!
(5)Sarah B.
LocoPops has got to be my favorite place in Durham. Pretty much had a great idea in the combo of ice pop + mexican flavas. I used to love to walk over here from spring and summer cookouts down the street. and now...there is a shop in Raleigh (stoked) and I hear there is one in Chapel Hill. I also love that the prices are either 1 or 2 dollars. keep it simple!
(5)Zach S.
I've only been here once, but I loved the idea before I even saw the place so that's an extra star right there. My wife had the Mexican chocolate pop which was very good. I had the cookies and cream which was OK aside from the fact that the cookies made it very grainy. MY dog got the chicken PUPSICLE which he kinda liked. WARNING about the pupsicles!!!! I've noticed that a lot of dogs are very sensitive to cold things and they might vomit after eating one of them, like mine did.
(4)Matt D.
A unique idea with unique flavors, I don't order anything too crazy. I usually just get 1 or 2 cookies and cream pops which are excellent. I recommend it to all from 0-100 years old. :]
(5)Henry S.
I like Locopops, and would frequent this place more if they were in a location closer to my house, but I don't know if I'd give it 5 stars. Maybe I just don't like popsicles as much as I thought I did? I really don't like the cream-based pops, and gave up trying them after a few unsuccessful Locopop visits. However, the water-based pops are exactly what I remember from child hood, with strong flavors that melt onto your hands and get sticky by the end. The staff here is overly nice, and the prices are reasonable, I guess it really is that I don't like popsicles as much as everyone else.
(4)Naomi R.
please don't ever ask me what my favorite flavor is. it's a long running, ever evolving list. i don't really consider myself a huge fan of popsicles...but i heart locopops. and, i know many doggies that love locopops too. if you don't know what i'm talking about, you probably haven't been to locopops. you need to take corrective measures asap! thankfully it's much easier to do so now that their awesomeness has led to expansion throughout the triangle.
(4)Albert Y.
This place is pretty good and offer some pretty cool flavors. The prices are great as well. I live too far from this place to go often but I've been pleased each time I visit. I'm not sure how often the menu changes but they always seem to have a good variety. I normally order a few of the small Locopops just so I can try more flavors.
(4)Carol L.
Really unique flavors. i think I tried coconut/pineapple, and almond chocolate? Reasonably priced, nice small treat.
(4)Leslie G.
Found when searching Yelp for froyo. LocoPop was incredible -- I had the Mexican Chocolate -- deliciousness!
(5)Aparna B.
locopops are amaaaaaazing. i never knew popsicles could taste so good! i second the suggestions of buying 2 smalls over 1 large and trying a variety of flavours. you can also be like me and buy 58376039568093 of them and have them packed in a freezer bag to take home and eat later. :)
