Very knowledgeable staff, plenty of cooked food (it's not all raw fish) and gluten-free choices abound! Casual atmosphere but also suitable for a formal dinner. Reservations are helpful but they can usually squeeze you in at the bar.

Okay, so I really wanted to like this place. It was recommended to us by some locals so I was pretty pumped. It gets great reviews, so I was super pumped. I know that some people say that it's a sushi place in MT so you have to adjust your expectations but it wasn't great. I am a positive person so let's start off with the good, the guy that filled up the water was great! He was always there to fill up the glasses and clear the plates. He was top notch. They also give you a cucumber salad that rocked! I was so hopefully when I ate that this was going to be so good. That is where the good things end. The sushi was poorly made. The rolls weren't tightly rolled and the ingredients didn't taste fresh. My husband had the sashimi and he swears that either the fish wasn't fresh or it had been frozen. I had the dynamite roll and it was okay. The California Rolls were flavorless and the crab was chewy. The rolls were really small for the price too. The service was painfully slow, I get it was a long weekend but almost an hour for 4 rolls seems ridiculous and the waitress didn't even apologize. Lastly, we made a reservation and we were offered either the window bar or the sushi bar. Walk ins were given tables... That's kind of garbage if you ask my opinion. But the guy that delivered the water was top notch!

Sushi In Montana OK, so you're in Montana. You want sushi. Why???? So, I met a friend here, on his recommendation. OK. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. Great? Not by coastal standards. But in Montana? Pretty damned good. If this were in a major city on either coast, I'd rate it a 2 star. Maybe 1.5 Here in the middle of Bumf...k Montana? 3 Stars. Maybe 4. Actually a decent Sake list FWIW. I didn't get sick so there's that. Cute servers :-) Buona Fortuna!

Came here in September 2014 so this review is a tad outdated. I cannot compare how this Montana sushi stacks up to other Montana sushi, but I can say one thing for certain, I will not be eating sushi in Montana again anytime soon if this is representative. The fish did not seem very fresh. The non-fish ingredients seemed very out of place, and felt like they were only there to mask the true taste of the fish. There were many cooked fish sushi options, and I can understand why. I don't think I have ever disagreed with the consensus to such a large degree on a restaurant before when looking at other reviews of this place. Either others don't know what they are talking about, or the restaurant had an off night when we were there. The wait staff was friendly and attentive which has earned this place an additional star.

So Theresa made this a 5 star experience! She was hands-down one of best servers I've ever had... in my life this is coming from living in Malibu, LA and Orange County. She obviously has passion for her profession and made the entire dining experience pretty magical (great taste in jewelry btw) I really hope to be one of her regulars! The sushi was good. It was as fresh as some I've had in the coast. The hamachi carpaccio was tasty (the fish was extremely fresh) but a little different from what I remembered (granted that was 6 years ago). I would prefer my saki not in a wine glass as I enjoy sipping out of the little ceramic cups most places offer and I enjoy my cold saki... It would be nice to see more by the bottle at a reasonable price as I know it's possible. I will definitely be back. My BF really dug the artwork too.

I had a pretty good rainbow roll here, I couldn't eat the pieces very well as they were huge so maybe just make the pieces a little smaller and it would've been an excellent rainbow roll.

I love Wasabi Sushi. There are plenty of good reviews on here so I will stick to my recommendations. First of all, make a reservation, especially for the weekends. Your experience will be that much better if you can just walk in and sit down. If you have a small group (4-6) I would ask for a booth. Best seats in the house and a little more private and out of the way. For the sushi, do not leave without trying the Ultimate Temptress and a spicy tuna roll (or something with their spicy tuna in it). Everything is good so pick a variety, order some beers and edamame and sushi on!

This is the best meal I've ever had in my life. The food is so high quality and reasonably priced. Our server was excellent as well. We had the sizzling prawns, the BC Dragon roll, and a few other rolls that I can't remember the name of.. The ingredients are unusually paired but exceptional matches. Best sushi I've ever had.

The sushi here was absolutely fabulous. The service is great and very friendly. They use very fresh ingredients and it's fun to watch the chefs put your rolls together. Meanwhile try an appetizer called, adamame, blanched and lightly Salted soy beans. My wife and I typically order thee or four different rolls to split. We like to try new things and have never been disappointed. Excellent food, quality and service. I highly recommend this restaurant!

Yum, yum, yum!!! Sushi in Montana?? YES!! If you have repeatedly been let down by sushi selections in MT then come here! Awesome rolls, attentive staff, a fun atmosphere. The sushi is so tasty and you will be able to find something for any preference-extensive, delicious menu.

Their fish is flown in daily, their chefs and staff are friendly and competent. They also offer some great entrees for those not feeling like sushi. They have a good selection of beer and wine, as well as a good variety of Saki. Let's be real, its is Montana sushi. If you are from San Fran or Seattle, you may find the selections a little bit limited. If you are from the Rocky Mountain West and are in the mood for a caterpillar roll, head to Wasbi. I've never felt the fish I've had there was not top-notch, and I've never left disappointed.

I love sushi rolls but will admit I'm bit a sushi expert but this was horrible. All I tasted and smelled was the chewy smelly seaweed roll. I've eaten lots of rolls using the seaweed but they never tasted bad. The inside seemed slight mushy not fresh and crunchy. Must be a locational difference in sushi prep...? Place was cute clean and friendly

Year in and Year out, Wasabi delivers! We invade Wasabi every year for my BDay for dinner---the whole Fam Bam. Rolls, dishes, soup, cucumber salad, and plenty of Sake'! The Blacken Tenderloin was exceptional on our visit this year, Rolls were yummy and noodles were great! Good times flow, along with the Sake!! Our waitress was great, friendly, and very attentive, but even tho she knew we were there for a BDay, there was no Green Tea Ice Cream and candles or singing Happy BDay. BooHoo. Not very cool. But everything else Rocks!!

Great place! Heard rave reviews before I went, but I was skeptical. I've had plenty of nasty sushi in small towns. (What can I say? I'm adventurous.) The fish is high-quality and fresh and the rice is perfect. They had the best salmon skin roll I've ever had with a delicious balance of sweet, savory, and smokey. The best time to visit is right when they open at 5pm. Any later and you'll need a reservation.

Annual sojourn for me and my son. Always helps to have a buddy behind the sushi bar as he prepared a special roll for us. Don't ask me what it was...some special concoction of lobster, crab, avocado, tempura style with spicy sauce. Would be helpful if the sake list indicated the dryness rating as their 'dry' offering was still a little on the sweet side. Notwithstanding, still a fun evening and great way to wrap up our trip.

Wasabi Sushi Bar provides one heck of a dinner experience in a rather casual eating mountain town. The fish here definitely hails from all across the nation, not erring on local, but I do appreciate the unique ingredients spanning across the unique set of rolls and the like. The staff here takes care of you, and you do feel right at home, never actually realizing that you are participating in "casual-fancy" dining in the middle of nowhere Montana. I did take note that locals and tourists alike love this joint enough to pack it out on a Friday night during dead season. I will not go into detail on the rolls, as there are a number of phenomenal choices, but do know that the prices are extremely reasonable, and the alcohol menu offers more unique bottles of wine than you might assume. We had some great Sauvignon Blancs and made it out under $400 for 7 people. The more popular rolls certainly do not err on conventional--they are flat out tempura-fried. I would give any roll with their house peppered albacore or smoked-salmon a go; they know how to season their water-bound critters here. Additionally, any roll with a unique veggie is worth a spin i.e. gobo root. All sorts of clientele inhabit these parts, with trust funders sitting next to bachelorette parties propped up caddy corner to Christian ministers. Wasabi continues to reel in the business because they are cranking out quality sushi, an expansive but not exhaustive menu, and fantastic drinks--at low price points with good service, to boot.

Amazing sushi! We went out for my husbands birthday and decided at the last minute to make a reservation. They were able to fit us in without any problems. We arrived and were seated immediately. We ordered the Thai chicken wraps as an app then we had the dynamite roll, the black widow roll and the hot beach roll. All we're amazing however our favorite was the dynamite. Service was great and food was amazing! We would definitely recommend this place to anyone!

I have been eating sushi since 1980 so I was a little skeptical that a sushi bar in Whitefish would meet my standards. I was wrong. Their menu is pretty experimental -with rolls called Black Widow and quinoa tabouli salad. I had the vegetarian bento box and shared some of my father in laws sashimi platter. My bento box was HUGE and super yummy: veggie rolls, seaweed salad, and stir fry veggies of all sorts with some sort of yummy salty bread. I ate all of my f.i.l. hamachi (yellow tail). It was melt in your mouth good. I kind of wish I order more fish, instead of taking the safe I'm in the mid-west, how good could the fish be route. The green tea ice cream was OK-- but my nephew had no complaints eating 3 scoops of it. Prices less than the Bay Area, but steep for Montana. Yes, I will go back on my next trip.

What's up with the music? Satellite radio sucks. Not their fault though... still one of the best places in the fish. I can just keep going back here. I have NEVER been disappointed. Ever.

When we left the Big City to move to Montana, I figured sushi was a thing of the past. As a West Coast girl used to really fresh fish, I was terrified of what I might find in Montana. Took me 3 months to screw up the courage to try Wasabi. Glad I got over myself! The extra touches here are nice: hot towels arrive with a cucumber/carrot/red onion salad in sweet vinegar. The pickled ginger isn't the fake pink stuff. Ice water comes with lemon. The slightly annoying: reservations "required" according to the hostess, although she did manage to find a spot at the bar for us, at dinner time on Friday in the summer (tons of tourists descend like locusts here in the summer). The space is kind of crowded. Prices are a little steeper than I'm used to, but hey, the fish has to travel a couple of more miles, and its a tourist town. Nigiri was very fresh, good quality, no complaints. Loved the Dynamite roll. Also liked the Going to The Sun roll, although not quite sold on snap peas in sushi as they are sort of tough. They do lend a unique flavor but will probably avoid them in the future. The dessert menu looked REALLY GOOD when we were there, if you're into dessert, you really gotta check the specials out. Two thumbs way up. Price and the reservations required issue leaves me a little cold, so only 4 stars. Oh - and even though you might have to call ahead, you don't need to dress up, its Montana, so wear your jeans or shorts, etc. and it's all good.

Went with the wife and our two teenagers for quick meal after a long trip out here from Seattle. Both the staff and the food was great. The menu offered enough variety and meal sizes to cover everyone's needs. It was great way to start our vacation here in Whitefish.

Given Whitefish is a snowbird haven (meaning, there's money there), I expected better. The chef's there on the day we went were clearly inexperienced and could use some training by a master. The spicy shumai had too much wasabi in the dough - it overwhelmed the other flavors (and I LOVE wasabi). The maguro sushi quality was good but the rice was not properly cooked (undercooked and tough). The hamachi sashimi was fresh and tasty but irregularly sliced, some too thick, some too thin, some just right. Not a proper preparation, but tasty. Both rolls were too tightly wrapped. All evidence of inattention and/or inexperience. Nice ambiance, smartly decorated, good friendly attentive service who know the menu. Definitely need reservations unless walking in right when they open. In their defense, they have a sign over the sushi counter that says "No Sushi Snobs". I understand why. They have great potential but need a chef that has some experience to run the show and train the staff properly. The barely-20's behind the counter are better suited to diner preparation. I will return though in Spring. I'll order things that require less skill.

The sign above the sushi bar says it all "no sushi snobs". I would suggest it be changed to say "not for anybody who has ever had sushi before". I admire Wasabi for an imaginative menu, with a mix of Japanese, Thai, Indian. ..but before attempting to 'fuse' these cuisines, I suggest that they get the basics right; like Miso soup that doesn't taste like it came out of a package (way too salty), ..like rice that doesn't taste like it was in the refrigerator all night; cold and pasty..... Generally, all the sushi was cold; lacking the essential element of sushi; the variation in temperature between rice, fish and tempura items. If I'm being thorough, I'd also comment that the ratio of fish to rice in the nigiri was too much rice. Also, the presentation of the sushi was reminiscent of sardines in a can; all smushed together in rows on a square plate; no garnish, no consideration of color and texture in the presentation. In terms of flavor, my salmon skin roll was virtually inedible; it tasted like scrapings from the barbeque. Other diners at our table had cooked items that were just as uninspired. The teriyaki chicken had a distinct taste of catsup. What they called 'naan' seemed to be dense, flavorless English muffins. Again, I am all for blending cuisines and tastes, but if you're going to serve naan, then please have a basic understanding of what good, even acceptable naan tastes like. In terms of service, it was cheerful and friendly once we were seated. I could complain about the fact that at 5pm, when Wasabi claims to be open, there were at least 15 diners shivering outside the restaurant waiting for the doors to open, which they finally did at 10 after 5. Not a great customer experience. It is great to find a restaurant that is willing to try some new imaginative approaches to cuisine. But again, I think Wasabi really needs to spend some serious effort to bring the quality of their food up to an acceptable level.

OK, you know we're in Montana, right? So one would not expect sushi here in the 1st place, let alone good sushi. We locals are just glad to have any sushi, but as luck would have this is GREAT sushi. It's a very popular place, so expect to wait a short time.

  • Cristina G.

Damn good sushi! After a long day of hiking this place hit the spot. Everything was super fresh and very creative from a roll perspective. We had the Hot Blonde Roll, Going to the Sun roll, Hamachi heaven roll, OMG Its Spicy roll along with fresh salmon sashimi and everything was outstanding. Coming from the east coast we noticed that the salmon was a darker red color than what we are used to. That's because they use Sockeye salmon!! Yum! Also the sake trio taster was a nice touch. Wasabi is a rather small establishment with maybe 12 tables tops so I highly recommend making reservations since this place fills up quickly. If you like sushi and you are visiting Whitefish, this is the place to go.

Pretty decent Japanese food, considering it's in Whitefish, Montana. Went here with my friends and wife last summer while we were visiting Glacier National Park. I would have to say, while it was pricey, the food was pretty good and probably one of the better places to eat in Whitefish. However, I recall it was totally not authentic because I thought it had Thai food or some other kind of Asian food too. What's with that for a Japanese sushi bar? Is it their version of Asian fusion food? To me, this is like serving Italian along with French food. Just doesn't work for me. Plus, the service wasn't totally fast, just OK. If not for these two things, I would have given the place 4 stars.

I always love trying new sushi places in small mountain towns like Whitefish. You wouldn't really expect to get great sushi so far away from the ocean, but I've been pleasantly surprised many times. Wasabi was one of those pleasant surprises: the sushi here is really good. Not the best I've had, but definitely above average. The service was also quick. I was able to pop in, order and eat my meal, and get the bill in half an hour or so, which allowed me to catch the SNOW bus back to Whitefish Mountain Resort. I'm glad the staff were so attentive, because if service had been slow I would've been stuck downtown for another hour and a half with nothing to do! One thing I'd note is that I feel the price indicated here on Yelp, currently "moderate" at $11-30 per person, is inaccurate. Wasabi charges $5 for 2 pieces of nigiri sushi, and the other prices are pretty similar. If you want a proper, filling meal with a drink, I think $30 would be the absolute minimum to expect. (I'm not factoring that into my review score, though; just giving fair warning.) In summary, if you like sushi, give Wasabi a try! You won't be disappointed.

Found Wasabi while going through Montana on a road trip. I was skeptical about getting sushi in a non big city. But the reviews seemed positive so we gave it a try. Well, it was a bit disappointing. None of the rolls we ordered seemed to have much flavor. We got the tuxedo roll, rainbow roll, going to the sun roll, black widow roll and Max's roll. The bacon in the tuxedo roll was more like beef jerky. The peppered sushi in the widow and Max's rolls were overwhelming. Is it what I expected from a ski town in Montana? Maybe more than I expected, actually. But far from superb sushi.

My friends and I stumbled on this place after going to Whitefish beach. We were all vacationing from our big city lives. It was the perfect place to cool off, eat refreshing food, and relax! The service was great. The waitress was knowledgeable, available but not in our face the whole time, and on top of our orders. My only complete was the check. It was sooo hard to read! They filled out a sheet or something, so confusing. I'm allergic to avocado and recently found out shellfish as well. So I was pretty screwed as far as options. However, they were completely accommodating. She made suggestions of what to order. Then, she communicated w/ the chef so that my food would be made separate from any avocado or shellfish. I got the Vegamaki. They kindly left the avocado out. It was delicious! They brought us hot steamed towels before we ate. Great experience!

Usually I am suspect of sushi in landlocked states. However Dinner at Wasabi in August of 2010,while my wife and I were vacationing in Montana, has changed my mind. Interesting selection of unique sushi dishes: BLT roll, quinoa roll, loved it! Everything we ordered was done right. Service was warm and engaging, along with a hip vibe, mirrors over the sushi chefs to watch their skill in action and not being rushed out after closing makes this place tops on my list.

Not traditional sushi, but still great. Awesome service and quality fish for Montana. It is a little pricey but the food was good. We were in a rush and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. Will be going there again for sure.

Wasabi used to have some great sushi; though this was several years ago. New ownership and new policies have resulted in mediocre sushi. Yeah its Montana but when you can get stuff just about as good at Super 1 for half the price it makes you think...

We love Wasabi and make a point to come here every time we are in the area. They have some Japanese grill items now too. Hamachi carpaccio is awesome, as is the lobster -asparagus roll. Then again, Whitefish is the most awesome of small towns ever so we expect the best...

Sushi is one of my favorite food groups so it's not easy to review a sushi restaurant here in Montana. I've eaten here 3 times and the service has been exceptional every time. The atmosphere could use a little improvement, but it doesn't not to be hot and trendy like it would need to be if it was located in Chicago or NY. As for the food, it's very very good. It's always fresh and I enjoy it every time, but I wish they had a few unique specials or maybe some special sauces to switch it up for those of us who will become regulars. Will I go back soon? Absolutely!

I'm visiting family for Thanksgiving, and we went to Wasabi for dinner last night. When 6 people order 2-3 rolls each, you get to try a lot of stuff. :) There are some interesting combinations here that I have never seen before! They feature some of the local trout in some of the maki, and while I was worried those would taste fishy, it was actually quite tasty. Not nearly as fishy as mackerel at most sushi places. Everything that I tried was great, but the variety between the maki really stood out. This is a great place to go in a group and try lots of different maki! Each one is a different experience. Personal favorites: Dynamite, Ultimate Temptress, and Big Mountain.

Not understanding why everyone loves this place! I know everyone says "you can't expect much in Montana for sushi" but this place is why people feel that way. Bozeman, and Billings have exceptional sushi restaurants. Ones that don't make you sick the next morning.. both times you have eaten there! Not to mention not everything needs to be lathered in mayo or some sort of sauce.. Let's focus on the quality of the raw seafood you are eating and not the add-ons!

What can you say about Wasabi? I really great sushi place in Montana? C'mon - but it's true. The guys at Wasabi are awesome, great food, great staff and an overall solid sushi joint. Don't expect snooty sushi, and definitely not the place for "sushi snobs" (there's a sign), but I'll stand behind it every time.

I'm a sushi snob, but one that understands the nature of seafood in a land-locked state. I get that "fresh seafood" is a misnomer, but having said this, I also recall one of my best sushi experiences being in Laramie, Wyoming. One of the worst sushi experiences of my life, however, was Wasabi Sushi Bar in Montana... I guess if you live in Whitefish and have never had good sushi, you might think this is what it is all about, but trust me...it isn't! Thin sashimi, rotting shrimp, heavy-handed seasoning, poor service, the list goes on... eugenefoodsnobs.com/wasa…

Great friends took us here last night. Sushi in Montana i was a little sceptical but, it was really good. We ordered a saki sampler, well worth the money and the size was just right. Then we ordered some sasami and rolls, I was really impressed. The Montana roll with smoked trout was really different and good. It was fun seeing different kinds of fish on the menu, then I usually see. I would go back for sure.

While I've never had a bad experience here, I have left disappointed by visiting on a night when the rolls just didn't seem "on." They'd easily have five stars if it weren't for those once in a while off nights. I'd give them four and a half stars if I could. Favorites include: Princess, Vegimaki, and Calamari. Newest favorite: Andy's handroll. If it were closer (I live in Kalispell), I'd have a real problem. And to anyone who's wondering, yes, it really is possible to have good sushi in Montana. I've eaten sushi in many different cities on the west coast, and my husband has even had sushi in Japan, and it's still one of our favorite places.

Went there Monday ...must have been an off night for the cooks. The miso was too salty to eat. The special was good, two shrimp on pineapple with rice. Then came the OMG roll and the Temptress. Presentation was really bad. Just stacked up on a very small plate. They left out the spice topping on the OMG. If I we had not been told which roll was which we would not have known. Clearly the worst sushi we have ever had. The service was great. We have been going there since the doors opened years ago...hope this was just a fluke.

Wasabi is one of my favorite sushi restaurants...and I eat a lot of sushi! They have a very fun atmosphere, great food and very nice waitresses! It's not a bad idea to call ahead a few hours to reserve a table on weekends so you won't have to wait, they get pretty busy. The ultimate temptress is probably one of the best rolls on the menu, don't skip it! They use incredibly fresh fish. I've never had a bad experience here.
