Decided to try Nara spur of the moment on a Sunday night. I was a bit nervous since we were the only people in the restaurant. I was excited to try the food until I saw the prices...soo sooooo high! My husband said "wow, they must be really proud of their food". We ordered the Bibimbap with beef and pork. It was flavorful and well cooked with large portions (I don't know how authentic it was since everyone that worked at the place was white). It was not worth $15. Bummer that they are so pricey considering the rest of the Asian food I have had in Missoula is awful. Oh well...

I am married to a Japanese woman and I have spent 5 years in Japan. I do not expect much from sushi restraunts in America. I can not comment on anything in this restraunts in regards to their korean food because I did not try any, however this was probably the worst restraunt I have tried for sushi, and Japanese food. The service was great.

First off, this place is extremely pricey for Missoula standards. Do yourself a favor and come here on Tuesday night where they have great deals and premium rolls and bbq & sushi combos (50% off!). The sushi is good by Missoula standards and the Korean bbq is good too. Hard to go wrong there since you cook it yourself! I also highly recommend the fried ice cream here, it's to die for!

While the restaurant was busting at the seams with people and was a bit noisy...i took this as a positive reflection of good food and enjoyment with good friends. Now I didn't try the Korean BBQ, I was wanting the Sushi....The menu was real entertaining with many many choices...This was heaven, and I was not disappointed...My first choice, the Dragon Roll...it was everything that I was expecting, and then some...and the Maki...I tried the Spicy Shrimp Maki and then the Sake Maki. This was so tasty...I would have asked for more but I was stuffed. My quest for some good Sushi was achieved.....my taste buds were satisfied.....for now. So what can I say about the restaurant and most importantly, the food.....go here with your wife...your special friends...you will be delighted my friend...!!!

We try to visit Nara at least 2 or 3 times a month. Dollar day on Mondays, Thursdays and after 4pm on Saturdays provide a tremendous value. On Tuesday the specialty rolls are on sale (Montana Sunset is amazing!) and so are Sake bombs. Matt, the waiter, is one of the best servers in town. His service is impeccable and he will treat you like royalty. The owner is also very generous in treating the regulars. He usually includes a complimentary seaweed salad or desert. The sushi is always fresh, and the presentation always beautiful. Nara is our "go to" place when we want to unwind and have a great meal.

I lived in Korea for a while. This place, I don't think you can even call their food Korean. Very expensive, decent tasting but if your expecting a Korean BBQ like in Korea or Korea town in L.A. you will be very disappointed.

Best place in Missoula! Owners are amazing people and I miss this place all the time since I moved out of Montana. John and Marion are some of the greatest bosses I have ever work for. Their sushi is top notch. John would go to the airport in the middle of the night to pick up fish to assure best quality.

The food is decent but lacking that real Korean BBQ experience! I can honestly say the waitress made the experience better! They are out of short ribs and have been for two months... That's a serious no-go. The pork BBQ is good but they do not have Sam gyup sal which is really sad. The sushi is on point! Try the caterpillar roll! I will definitely go back since the amount of ethnic foods over here is sparse. Thanks again to my awesome waitress!

Okay so for Montana this is actually not a bad sushi place. The prices for the specialized sushi is a little outrageous, but considering this is Montana I guess I am not surprised. The atmosphere is pretty welcoming. The only reason I gave them four out of five stars is the quality of the sushi being wrapped. Unfortunately for the wrapping of the sushi it is definitely amateur night. I would recommend only going to this restaurant on the nights that you specials which is Tuesdays and Thursdays otherwise I do think they are a little bit pricey. If you're in the area they're worth the visit and if I'm around this restaurant again on the nights we are doing specials I will definitely stop in again.

Sushi wasn't very good. Put all of our orders on one plate so we had to figure it out and then ouldnt even split he check.

Review: My wife and I went there for lunch at around 11:30 on a Tuesday. The place was not crowded so we were quickly seated and ordering. We got the Rainbow Roll (sushi) as well as the Pork Katsu (strips of breaded pork on a bed of lettuce, served with rice). The fish atop the sushi roll was nice and fresh tasting. The wasabi served with the dishes has a good punch to it and I really enjoyed it. Sometimes restaurants can give you cheaper and watered-down stuff but this as nice and strong. The rolls themselves were okay. I definitely felt like the raw fish sitting atop the sushi was tastier than the roll itself. The pork katsu was less impressive. The pork was dry, so it felt more like this was something you'd find served at a fast-food joint, or in a cafeteria. It sat atop a bed of chopped lettuce that had no sauce on it, so it was bland (which is to be expected I supposed of plain lettuce). Overall the food was okay, and for the price, at about $15 per plate that we got, it needs to be more than okay. Suggestions: Cut the pork into thicker slices, this will help the meat to not cook as fast and dry out as much. Traditionally the pork katsu dish is served with a white sauce, usually a miso dressing, on the bed of salad that is underneath the pork, or is at least made available on the side of the dish. This was not done in this case so the lettuce had no flavoring to help make this dish fresh. Chop the lettuce into finer slices so it feels like like larger chunks are being eaten. This allows it to be

I came in here with a group of 5 and the setting was nice. The service was ok , and I felt like the server would walk away before we could really ask questions about the menu. When the sushi came out all 5 of our orders were on one plate! This made it difficult to sort out who's sushi was who's. And aside from that, our orders was incorrect. The actual sushi was best described as tasteless and bland. Probably the worst sushi place I have been to.

PROS: convenient location, sushi was so-so. Dollar sushi day on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturday from 4-9. CONS: sushi was so-so (I don't think they put vinegar in the sushi rice which is a must. The rice is not sushi rice and it's a little dry), seafood quality hit or miss, a little bit pricey for the quality?

I can only comment on the sushi as I have not tried other items on the menu. That being said, I would not dine here again. The fish was not fresh and rolls were very expensive. The veg tempura had way too much batter making the veggies taste like a bad doughnut. Unfortunately, sushi is a scarce in zoo town. I'll wait when I'm traveling elsewhere to get sushi.

Great little place-it has pretty good Korean BBQ. It has great sushi too-lots of variety-we just went there 2 nights in a row (one night Korean and next sushi) and the family consensus is 4 stars.

Best place in missoula for sushi! Awesome dollar nights Monday/Thursday! Super busy so expect a wait on those nights! Unfortunately they were so busy when we were there that they missed a couple of rolls we ordered. Luckily we were sitting at the bar and I asked the sushi chef for 2 spicy yellowtail rolls! What came back was something I had never seen before (yellowtail is my usual). We ate one piece each and decided we didn't like it but didn't complain, they were too busy and it wasn't a big deal! But when the bill came, we realized they charged us $14 for those two rolls.. On dollar night! We asked the waitress and she assured us she would fix it, but the chef overheard and got involved, yelling at the waitress and telling ME that I had ordered hamachi. (Funny thing is that hamachi means yellowtail) and I told him no, spicy yellowtail. The waitress sorted everything out for us and was great overall. My advice: STEER CLEAR OF THE BAR! (Unless you like getting yelled at over dinner). The servers are great--choose a table!!

Wow, though crowd. Sushi is West LA is double or triple the cost here. One of my favorite spots to have lunch or dinner when in Missoula. My experiences here have been fine without any drama.

I absolutely enjoy Nara for their sushi. Many of the other menu items are okay (the noodle soups are a bit bland and tempura fried vegetables too greasy). However the sushi stands out as top-notch because of the quality and freshness of the seafood (cooked and raw), which truly is something to consider because Missoula is nowhere near an ocean. Their tempura fried green tea ice cream dessert is divine. I also enjoy their loose-leaf green tea along with the ice cream mochi desserts! The restaurant is always clean and staff hospitable. And to top it off they have Dollar Sushi Nights; who doesn't like a good deal? The dining space itself is indeed cozy, so I caution you to arrive somewhat early for Dollar Nights to beat the crowd.

Ok it's the only Korean place in town and does a good job. It is owner operated by Koreans who know how to make sushi. They make their own Kim chi and have a big menu. The staff are really nice young ladies who treat you right. Everything was fresh and authentic. It is a bit more expensive then what I'm used to on the coast, but hey it's Missoula! The chef made me a custom roll and gave me a deal on it.

I definitely love eating at Nara's! I go here for lunch and always get the catepillar rolls with miso soup. These are huge specialty rolls that have teriyaki grilled eel and avacado around the roll. The service is always great the people are very friendly and it is convenient for take out as well. Love this place!

How this place doesn't have higher ratings is beyond me. Soooo good and not greasy or gross. I had the bibimbop with beef. Everything was so tasty - and plenty of food!! I have dinner for leftovers. The tea was sooo good. Everything fab!!

I love sushi. And I am pretty picky when it comes to how my rolls are prepared and the level of quality I am receiving for a certain price...I have had sushi from all over and recognize a good product when I taste it...I am giving this place two stars instead of one because I have never had their Korean BBQ and I do think their ideas for rolls are creative...although what most people don't realize is this place is very similar to Sushi Hana (rolls and menu items but not quality) and they are inherently connected in many ways. I would like to try the Korean BBQ sometime because it may be where it's at for this restaurant. Almost every time I have eaten at Nara the sushi rice has been cold, hard and the taste is all wrong. I have worked in other sushi restaurants and know what sushi rice is supposed to be like...and it's not that. In my opinion, sushi rice needs to be executed perfectly or it can't support the delicacy and flavor profiles of the fish. Fail with the rice, and you fail with the entire roll and/or sushi... The restaurant is small so expect to wait during busy times, especially during dollar nights...although, it is better to come on dollar nights because their regular prices are extremely high. There are far better sushi restaurants in town and I highly suggest going to one of those before coming here.

First trip to Nara was way back in 2006 and we loved it. We continued going several times a year for a long time even though the sushi began to slip and the pricing started to skyrocket. We stopped going in 2013 because we could no longer justify the expense/enjoyment ratio. Their Tuesday night special was taken away last year which means for two to eat, have some sake and be full, you'll be looking at a $60-80 check. Too steep for sushi of this quality.

The former sushi place was not very good. This one IS good and you know the seafood is fresh and firm, not mushy and flat tasting. They also have added Korean items and those take the cake. Very excellent. Dollar sushi nights are over-the-top and give you a chance to try a bunch of stuff without having to order a roll or full order. And it is inexpensive to boot. Can be busy with the consequence of slow service, but hang in there.

Service was so slow. I ordered the yellowtail cheek appetizer and it came out after everyone elses meals came. :-/ A long time after their meals came and it was really dry. I'm not sure how you even do that with fish cheek, but it happened. Flavor was great though which made it even more disappointing. I also ordered a couple pieces of sushi and they were ok especially when you don't really expect so much from sushi in Montana. I am was just really bothered by the fact that I sat their watching my table finish up their meals while I waited for my food to come. When asked, the waitress said that it was taking so long because they had to grill it...um..grilling fish (last time I checked) was damn fast. No wonder it was so dry. It am being cool and giving them three stars because the rest of the crew liked their food.

We LOVE LOVE LOVE Nara. The first time we ever tasted sushi was 7 years ago at Nara. And, 7 years later, several trips to coastal lands (including Hawaii), and a LOT of sushi sampling, and it's still delicious to us. We usually go on dollar night, so we can stuff ourselves on sushi and not break the bank. The spicy rolls have the perfect mix of flavors, and I think the rice is great. I also like to get the seaweed salad, my husband likes the sunamono salad. We usually get a small sake, which is priced well, and the delicious green tea (my favorite green tea anywhere!). I do not think it is worse than Sushi Hana, I think they are both comparable. But, the service and prices are better at Nara. We just got back from another Nara dinner, and are looking forward to another one next week. :)

Really enjoyed the rolls I got--they were beautiful and delicious. The miso soup wasn't my favorite, but that was made up for by the cool atmosphere of the place. The larger tables each had built-in grills, complete with fully-functional fume hoods! Worth checking out, and about 17-23 bucks a plate.

The great thing about reviewing sushi is that there is no grey area, It's either good or bad... Nara is bad.

Hands down, the best Asian food in Missoula, MT. At Nara (a family-owned business) they have not only one, but two "Dollar Sushi" nights (Monday and Thursday) where sushi prices are so low even college students flock to their doors. Service is always impeccable. Ladies Night (Tuesday) is especially overlooked. Some of the Ladies Night specials include a Tempura/Sushi combo with six-piece tempura (includes shrimp and vegetables), sunamono or traditional Korean salad, miso soup, rice, and nine pieces of sushi. Drinks and specialty rolls are marked down as low as 40%. The sushi is always as fresh as Montana really gets, but the real gem of Nara are their traditional Korean BBQ tables. Especially on Ladies Nights where the price is steeply discounted, the customer receives salad, miso soup, rice, assorted Korean pickles (house-made, especially nummy as well as authentic) and a sizable platter of perfectly marinated meat or seafood to grill at your leisure right in front of you. Just be careful not to bump your knees at the fuel in-set under the table!

Do not know about other places in this city, however we lucked out and went in here because it was close to the gas stop we made. We found the food to be good and fresh. I do not know if I will ever make it back here but it was worth the stop.

As a former resident of Hawaii, Nara is good, for Missoula or ANYWHERE. i've never had a problem with the speed of the service, but then again i've never been in at a typical 'meal' time. (i've been in maybe 8 times in 6 months). I have heard the Korean is mediocre at best, but to me at Korean BBQ at a Sushi joint, is for those people in your party who don't want sushi, not a specialty so i'm not deducting points for that.

The bibimbap is tasty and dollar sushi on Monday and Thursday is worth it. If you're lucky you'll go a day when the Korean soup is the chicken and vegetable variety and wish you'd ordered a large bowl to devour. Then top it all off with some green tea mochi ice cream and stroll away satisfied. I've never tried the korean BBQ, but hope to someday. The location sucks, but the food's delish!

  • Hana G.

Service was ok but the sushi rolls were awful. The rice was really cold and hard. A special roll that is usually eight pieces was only four. The fish in the rolls was tasteless. To top it all off, their prices were high...so not worth it.

I'm gonna have to 5-star it for Missoula. Not many reviews for this place, because let's face it folks...there aren't that many travelers going through Montana. That aside, I always eat sushi wherever I go travel to see if fish taste different in different places. Nara was quite good -- I sat at the bar and my sushi-maker was actually a sushi-maker-in-training and we talked it up. Probably the funnest sushi eating session i've had. Oh yea, the food was pretty good too. You're in Montana though...they are famous for their views/nature/mountain climbing dogs, not their sushi...

My first time eating here was on a visit in Missoula. I was astonished to find a Korean BBQ in such a small town, so I was really excited to take some friends out to show them how incredible Korean food is -- I was disappointed to say the least. I had lived in a Korean household, eating real Korean food every day for the last three years. I don't remember what dishes we ordered, but I remembered thinking that it was a pathetic attempt at Korean food, and was disappointed that this is what I had shown my friends who had never eaten Korean food. Since the first time going to Nara, I have been to Korea a few times, and have had the pleasure of many good Korean BBQs in Los Angeles, a few in Portland, and a few in Seattle. I was again visiting some friends in Missoula, and one of my friends suggested this place. I said the last time I ate there the food was crap, but my friend assured me that it had gotten better. So, went back down there and looked at the pathetic excuse for a Korean menu (only a few items), and finally settled on Doeji Bulgogi (Pork Bulgogi). It came out and I immediately knew that I was going to be disappointed. This was not made with pork belly, and obviously they did not use Korean chili paste. It looked like a sliced pork tenderloin on rice. It was very American, and tasted terrible. Also tried the beef bulgogi, and that was sad as well. Tried a few items on the Korean menu, and the only thing halfway decent was the Kim Chi. This place is a pathetic excuse for Korean food, and the only way it could get a good review is by someone who has never experienced the joy of eating real Korean food. The sushi was not very good either. No better than the conveyor belt sushi places we have all over Portland, and there you can get any plate for $1.50, including sashimi. I feel bad for people in Missoula, severely missing out on any authentic ethnic food.

The people who wrote the other reviews are crazy. I don't know where they ate sushi previously but it must have been in Oklahoma or something. Go to Sushi Hana. See my review on it if you want to know what to get. You're welcome for helping you avoid this place.

Sushi Nara now that's a restaurant I here a lot about in town, and I don't just here things about it, I here great things. So I go to Nara about every two weeks. Every time I go there I order the same thing, of course someone else helps me eat it because when you here this list you are going to be amazed at how big it is. 1. Fresh Salmon 2. Escilare 3. Tofu Pockets 4.Kani 5. Anago PS: For the items above only get two of each. (1 for each person) 6. Spicy Tuna Roll (6 piece roll) 7.Rock And Roll (6 piece roll) 8. Tempura, ( 2 sweet potato), (2 shrimp) PSS: The sushi here is extremely fresh and very high quality.
