Chinese Cuisine
The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.
Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.
There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.

This is the third time I have tried this place. I wish I hadn't bothered. I was right the last two times. I cannot understand at all why anybody eats at this place. The food is over priced and one plate will barely feed one person. When you are charging me $9-16 the plate should be enough for at least 3-4 people. As for the food, it seems no matter what you order here the flavors are just muddled and boring. I mean why would a "Chinese" place have a bottle of Mexican hot sauce on the table? I ordered Kung Pao yesterday. It had absolutely zero heat. The flavor was so mediocre it was hard to even tell just what they were going for. I couldn't discern any Sichuan peppercorns or Shaoxing wine. They used peanuts instead of Cashews. it was served over noodles which I have never seen. This place is just not worth the time and definitely not your hard earned cash. I know that the Buffet place down the street in the old mall doesn't seem to be many peoples favorite. I would much rather spend $7.50 for all you can eat than the $12.25 this meal cost me.

The wonton soup I ordered is too plain salty. And the white rice they served is too rough (low quality rice). It's an overpriced Asian restaurant.

Great ambience. They have a 1-4 star spicy scale but made me a 5 star plate without blinking. Generous portions but not huge (a good thing) and reasonably priced. I would recommend this place to friends.

I'm baffled at some of the negative reviews here. Maybe because I've been eating here for so many years I know the best dishes, but I consistently bring my out of state, food snob friends here and they are consistently impressed. The Osaka's are amazing, the Thai Green Beans delish, the Pepper Seared Halibut is incredible. A great way to try the place and get a feel for the amazing flavor palet is to hit up happy hour. Dim sum style (but large) portions for $2 and $3 and you can fill up on amazing tastes for next to nothing. This is always one of my favorites and I've never had a friend complain.

Belated review since leaving Missoula *tear*. When I agreed to coming to this place on the recommendation of a Missoulan friend, I never expected this. The decor was amazing for a Chinese restaurant. It was like going into a converted upscale restaurant of some sort. I was pleasantly surprised. I don't agree that there is a hype surrounding this place, but the prices were kind of up there anyway. $12+ for an seafood entree. I had the halibut with rice and a corona. It was a pleasant meal and the ambiance was perfect. The service was good and the hostess who served us was kinda cute. :) Nothing spectacular, as previous reviews had suggested. Still, it was a good meal, but the halibut was kind of dry. Tasty though...

The best happy hour in town. Food is hit or miss. sometimes I feel like the rice might be old. Love the Osaka.

A lot of hype and advertising for this medicore restaurant. Can you say, "soy sauce?" Good, as that is about all you taste with perhaps a whif of ginger and garlic. Overwhelming. This is a nice try at "fusion" cuisine that falls short. Solid two stars, but Mustard Seed does have a following, mostly from the hippy university set. I think a lot of people think they are being healthy by being Asian fusian, but yucky taste is yucky taste.

The Chicken Osaka is the best. Service is ok...not overly attentive or nice but functional. The place is clean and the food is hot. I would recommend this place to anyone.

I had the phad thai special here and ... well ... I wouldn't consider it phad thai. The sauce didn't come anywhere near the spicy/sweet/peanut-y flavor you expect. Three stars for the green beans though - yum.

Just had late lunch at Mustard Seed. Waitress allowed us to order the lunch bowl for an additional $1.00 since it was past 3pm. I had a terriayki beef bowl with Asian Slaw and rice. I will admit there was sufficient for me to share, but it was not as outstanding as I had hoped. Good but not great. The place was filled with young professionals who were texting, using computers etc. So it must be a standard hang-out. Think we will go to our stand-by China Garden in Stephen's Center. I'm very particular about my Chinese food because I grew up in South East Asia and I've got to say that this place is not bad at all. They've got your standard "Americanized" Chinese dishes that has a lot of flavor and kick. The desserts here are probably what I enjoy the most. Sometimes they have late night "Buy 1 Get 1" desserts and I've gone to a few of those! Since it's in the Mall, you expect the prices to be a tad higher than other places. Whether it is worth it is up to you.

I love this place, I really do. You really shouldn't order any of the entree's though...The appetizers are about as good as it gets...Just start and stop with those..they also have a great happy hour- I've never made it but I've heard great things!

I have ordered several dishes from here hoping that the extra few dollars would take me to a great experience in my mouth. But,, it didn't. I had a coconut curry dish, it wasn't the best. i had kung pao and again it wasn't as good as a couple other places in Missoula. Yes it's very nice inside and located convenietly in the Southgate Mall but after my experiences I think i'll take my chances and try somewhere new rather than return to Mustard Seed.

Despite some of the reviews I consider this to be one of the better Asian food choices in Missoula. The atmosphere is relaxed and allows for a nice dinner date or a drink with the co-workers. I especially love the sweet and sour pork - this is my go-to dish and my personal way of testing the cuisine. Their egg rolls are amazing as well and during happy hour are a must order. The place can definitely fill up - so depending on when you arrive for dinner be prepared to wait. Of course I've gone to order/pick-up food on super busy nights and have been amazed at the prompt service. Just depends on how smoothly things are running. Unfortunately there are some tragic seating options right in front of the kitchens and in the main walkway which don't allow for an uninterrupted meal. Next time I'll definitely be requesting a booth. But overall I would recommend dining here! The bar is excellent and the bartenders terrific. I've enjoyed a few happy hour drinks here and it has always been great. Lots of interesting people to meet. Considering the restaurant is located at the mall I'm quite impressed. Definitely a fun place to try if you need a break from the usual.

There's nothing really bad about this place, but I have not found anything I really like here. First of all, it's not really Chinese food at all. Some dishes are named the same as traditional Chinese food dishes you find in big cities, but they are once removed at best. Fried stuff tends to have a doughy crust. Flavors are often too sweet, even if they have a kick of heat as well. It may be fine for people who grew up with it, and the food tastes OK, but I don't like it.

We had lunch here for the first time recently and were underwhelmed. The service was not bad, like other reviewers experience, however the meal was overpriced to be sure. I ordered the veggies over rice and a large bowl arrived with minimal flavor, maybe butter and salt? The halibut lunch special my friend ordered consisted of a small piece of fish on a monstrous bed of rice, with asian slaw. I don't know if this is a chain restaurant but it has that cold detached cookie cutter feel to it. In all, not so much.
(2)Michael B.
Great lunches at a reasonable price. Took someone else's advice and got a booth rather than a table Dinner's are also great and Mai Tai's are fantastic.
(5)James H.
My friend adores "Chicken Osaka". I was underwhelmed by what was basically lemon ginger chicken, with less flavour than I would like. I did enjoy my firecracker chicken - just a little bit spicy. Unlike some other reviewers, our rice was cooked well, and our service was adequate. Really nice atmosphere - east meets west style in both menu and decor. In short, better than you expect from a restaurant located in a mall, but not as great as many people seem to think.
(3)Dolores G.
Noting about this place is particularly stand out. If you are at the mall it is a nice sit down place to grab some Asian speciality dishes. The food taste, quality and ambiance are very PF Chang.
(3)Sean R.
ate here several years ago at their old location and it was terrible, thought it might be better at their newer location, I was wrong. It still sucks. Mostly comes down to the inedible food, slimy overcooked shrimp, sauces that resemble ketchup. Do not reccommend at all

Really enjoyed my post-work jaunt to Mustard Seed. My boss mentioned how much she loved it a few times, and since it's right down the street, I thought I would try it out. I was not disappointed. Very relaxing and modern atmosphere, several TVs at the bar with games on (a HUGE plus for me), and the food was outstanding. They could use another person behind the bar during dinner time, but I will definitely go back there. Get the Thai coconut chicken curry bowl. Incredible.

Been eating here for years in the old and new location. It is great and rarely disappoints . For a great lunch try here or the noodle express on Broadway.

Not too amazing. My friends highly recommended this place, and I love Asian food, so I tried it. The first thing I found when I unrolled my silverware was a very long hair wrapped inside the napkin along with my knife and fork. Upon further inspection I noticed that both myself and my husband's water glasses had icky residue/leftover lipstick on them. My husband had already eaten at another place so he let me use his clean silverware.:) I ordered a small wonton soup, which I enjoyed and is the reason for the second star in my rating. For my main course I had the kung pao chicken noodles dish, which left me further unimpressed. There were about four tiny pieces of chicken in the whole plate. It was mostly the very hot chilies, which are not edible. And for as many chilies as there were, the dish was surprisingly mild and bland. I would skip this place. The food isn't worth the price, it's just not up to the hype.

I love this place because you can order a dinner plate with unlimited brown rice and green beans for under $25! My husband and I order the pepper seared halibut with brown rice and teriyaki green beans(incredible) to share and we can't even make room for dessert!! The halibut isn't greasy and never fishy... And their unsweetened iced tea is AMAZING!! The desserts are delicious.... This place is pretty good for being in the mall!!:)

Doesn't get much better than this! Talk to Dan, he knows your name.

I had heard some good things about this place and some "Meh" reviews. I promised a friend I'd go and try out her favorite dish--Chicken Osaka. A friend came along too and we also split a stir fry dish. Now, I don't give out a 1 rating lightly, but my experience deserved a 1. Both dishes were utterly flavorless and the rice we were served was so undercooked it was crunchy. I have had a lot of Asian-Asian and American-Asian food in my life, so I know what to expect from an American-Asian place in a mall. This was bad for even that. I've also been to the take-out place "Noodle Express," which is in the back of the restaurant, facing in on the mall. I had a curry noodle dish. Also bad. I do not recommend.

If you are looking for Asian food in Missoula, this isn't a bad choice. Although a few of the reviews were not too stellar-I like this place. The staff has always been friendly, the food tasty (i like the lunch rice bowls) and the resturant is clean. Great place for drinks and apps at the bar!

I have eaten here several times, both during the week and on weekends. I've had appetizers, entrees and desserts. All I can say is that your money would be better spent elsewhere. The quality of the appetizers and entrees is unremarkable at best. Both tend to be bland and monochromatic in flavor, and are truly over priced. The desserts are the bright spot for this establishment. They have good flavor and are very visually appealing as well. They're also a little on the spendy side, but can be a fun treat. I, however, will not be returning because of the service. The waitstaff has been slow, unfriendly, disorganized and unprofessional in my experience. Waiting for a long time for mediocre service while witnessing staff standing around and chatting is a frustrating experience. Don't be fooled into ideas of timely food by calling ahead either. I called ahead for a single dessert on one occasion, was told to come for pick up in 45 MINUTES. This wouldn't have been so bad, had I not had to wait another 45 minutes after arriving to get my food. There have been other things, but the bottom line is that I will not be back.

I stopped going to this place years ago when they messed up my delivery and refused to redeliver what I actually ordered. Tried it again tonight and remembered why this place is not worth the money. Our delivery was half an hour late.. bringing the total wait time to an hour and a half. The food was soggy as it had probably been sitting for awhile, might be worth hiring another driver!
(1)Ben K.
Food here is pretty meh. When I go here I prefer the general mustards chicken.
(3)Zane M.
This place just isn't great....service hit and miss. Food bland (frozen?) and flavorless and bad quality of meat and seafood. Asian fusion in Montana seems out of place and this proves it actually is.
(2)Mike H.
There is a 75% chance your takeout order will be screwed up, leaving you eating somebody else's food. The quality of the food is very inconsistent. Sometimes great, sometimes really blaaah!
(2)Jeff H.
Never had a bad meal here and I've had just about everything on the menu. Considering my girlfriend worked here when I first met her, I had ample opportunity to sample the menu. Upscale atmosphere for Asian cuisine in Missoula, its a great place to treat that special someone to dinner. Recommendations are the lettuce wraps, shrimp wontons, kung pao chicken, general's chicken, shrimp osaka...I could go on but I'll let you start with these. Think PF Changs meets Montana.
(5)Cassie R.
one of the stars is because the restaurant itself is very cool. the food is really really not great, though. if you're looking for any kind of authenticity whatsoever, this is NOT the place for you. i guess it's sort of like a p.f. chang's knock-off...so if that's your thing, you might like it here. also, it felt like a long wait for our food after we ordered..
(2)Cheri B.
Great food! The green beans and the Ginger halibut are to die for.
