Excellent service with efficient wait staff. Was greeted by name since manager monitors Ciao's Facebook page. I was well-satisified with the eggplant dish; wish I could do one as well. The dessert, which was free with my birthday coupon, was made of pizza dough balls that were lightly sugared and we dipped in chocolate, caramel and rasberry syrups. I was expecting a light puff pastry based on the photo in the menu, so I felt the pizza dough balls were too heavy following the big meal. Two of us shared the dessert and we left about half of it, uneaten. I would not order that dessert again, but will definitely return to Ciao Mambo in the future. This was our third visit. I previously enjoyed sitting at the counter and watching our pizza being prepared.

    Overpriced and pretty average quality.

I'm going with 4 stars after a first visit. The food was good, the portions were decent, a bit expensive but not THAT much more than the few other places in Missoula I'd compare it too (Romeo's is slightly less expensive but not nearly as good, and Johnny Carinos is more expensive). Large wine selection, not a lot of beers but I think I saw Moose Drool so that would satisfy my needs. I actually liked the atmosphere with the change of traffic lights flashing across the walls and good music playing through the speakers (Dean Martin, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra were playing the whole time we were there this evening). Maybe compared to an Italian place in a big city it doesn't live up to peoples expectations, but I enjoyed myself and plan to return.

It's lively outside, and it's lively inside. I went here on a business dinner, and no one in my party was disappointed. Our server was wonderful--attentive, funny, knowledgeable, and she could write her name on our table upside down. The food pleased the palette with such interesting combinations of flavors--from the salad to the pasta. And it was a little loud, but it seems like the crowd is out to have a good time--as were we. Bottom line: It's a great place for a group!

We travel to many cities and nothing tops the satisfaction you'll find here. Americans love to spoil themselves when it comes to food and ciao mambo does not disappoint with their indulgence of sauces, spices and flavors. Service is always great!

After driving all day across Montana, it was a great to find such a great for dinner. Fabulous garlic bread covered in parmesan cheese helped assist large portions of fabulous pasta into our mouths. Good beer on tap, excellent wine, lovely servers. Only downside, no espresso to go with dessert.

Good, diverse Italian food. It is a slow dining experience, so this place is more appropriate for dates or close friends. Good drink menu. Just watch out, the food is rich!

A bunch of my friends and I were in town for the Missoula Marathon and we all came here for a pre-race carbo-loading meal. There was a good number of us and they were able to split the check for everybody. I ordered the small version of their Santo Pietro pizza with shrimp. I had a couple glasses of the Shooting Star Syrah to go with the pizza. The pizza was a bit on the salty side but all in all the food was great and the service was excellent! Nearby parking was somewhat hard to find. You have to drive a few blocks to find some street parking. I'm thinking the lack of parking was because they had a weekend block party in that area. I would recommend making reservations. My friend that set the dinner up made a reservation and we didn't have to wait too long to be seated. The place was packed!

I love the pasta ravena. The spaghetti and meatballs are delicious as well as the clam appetizer. However, it's very loud. I do not recommend going here on a nice quite date night. Also, the service is spectacular and extremely efficient.

Just had a delicious meal for the first time at Ciao Mambo. The atmosphere was fun, service was excellent and the best Italian I have had in a long time. I had Linguini Carbonara and it was delicious. My husband had spicy Linguini Arrabbiata which he enjoyed. The garlic bread with Parmesan was to die for ...sit a the counter and watch them prepare salad and pizza. Great time over all with generous portions and friendly waitresses.

Happened to stumble upon this restaurant by accident after the one where we were planning to dine was too crowded. Glad we did! Food and service were excellent! My husband and I both ordered salads which were beautifully plated. Our only complaint was too little dressing. Wonderful cheesey bread initially served as we sat down. Both of our dishes had just the right amount of garlic and spices. Pasta cooked el dente. This restaurant was a real pleasure. Will definitely return if we are in Missoula again!

Amazing food and fun atmosphere!!! After a week of eating out every day on vacation, this was a welcome dinner. Homemade and delicious pasta. Don't hesitate coming here, you won't be disappointed.

Great food- great time! Delicious homemade pasta! The staff was so friendly too. I am so glad we got to visit Ciao Mambo while we were in vacation in Whitefish!

I have to be honest, I don't think this location has as good of food as the one in Billings. Still, it's the best of the best in Missoula. My very favorite is the Italian nachos. I mean really?! They put meatballs on homade chips and smother it in an alfredo sauce I have died and gone to heaven. Seriously give me some shock paddles because these things are going to kill me

Great Italian spot!! This was my first time at the restaurant and not only was I impressed, but I would definitely recommend it! There was a bit of a wait, so if you're not in the mood to hang out, it's not the place for you. I would assume they take reservations, so calling ahead would be a good idea. The food was amazing, they have a large menu selection and the service was good. Water glasses stayed full and the waitress had good knowledge of both the food menu and wine list. I would definitely go back!

Our party had spaghetti and meatballs and clam linquini. Everything was delicious. The best part was where we sat. We were by the glass wall looking into the kitchen as dishes were cooked. Wow that was fun. They have a 10 or 12 burner gas stove and watching these dishes prepared was amazing to watch. Good food, good conversation and entertainment all at the same time.

In the past there was only two items on the menu worth eating, which was fine with me. The Mussels and the Pizza. The Mussels are still pretty good and worth it. The problem is that the Pizza is not the same as it use to be. They use to serve a normal size pie here. Now they think they are special and have gone to those dam ones that serve about 1 1/2 people. Since I haven't been here in awhile this was the last time I visit now.

Food is decent despite being a bit overpriced, and I enjoy the ambiance and location. They have definitely fallen into that "we will only hire moderately attractive female 20-year-old psychology majors for the front of house" trap which is tacky as hell to me, but I suppose that's a pretty irrelevant criticism.

Awesome Itaian food, and excellent appetizers! Their wine selection is very impressive, and the people are very efficient. A friend and I go to enjoy the linguine with clams which is delicious and big enough to share. The baguettes with cheese and tomatoes on top are our favorite appetizers and never go wrong choosing wines. This is a very busy restaurant, but the food is so good the wait is definitely worth every minute, absolutely love this place.

Wow! Really good comfort food. Awesome waitress. Ordered the salad with eggplant Parmesan and a meatball! Deliciouso! Cool Sinatra music, comfortable, affordable, a winner in my book.

I enjoyed the food here. It was tasty and well presented. I ordered the linguine carbonara. Service was good. Our wait staff was friendly and accommodating. I was wavering between 2 and 3 stars. If there was a 2.5 star rating that's what I would have chosen. Here's why: I was part of a large group (approx 13). They automatically added a 20% gratuity to my bill which I am never a fan of. Also, they didn't specify this from the onset which is worse because people tend not to notice this and tip again. Their wine list is pretty good but not set to Missoula prices. Their menu was vast but pricy. $15 for a bowl of pasta carbonara in Missoula?! This is big city pricing. The worst part was the ambiance. It seemed ok to be on the main floor but they stuck us downstairs where they had tables and long benches. I had to sit uncomfortably for a couple of hours because the bench was too high for me. My feet could not touch the ground. To top it off the edge of the bench was sharp and kept digging into me also, it was uneven so our row kept tipping back and forth when someone moved. Not a total bust but I have no desire to return.

Nice ambiance and good food. I have been there a few times and the service is just OK. If you get a table next to the kitchen ask to be moved as you can see right inside and you don't want to see some of the people making your food.

I went here on a Friday for a special dinner. The food was decent- pretty typical pasta and cream sauce. The person I was with ordered a shrimp and chicken pasta and received 3 shrimp. The pasta Ravenna is good, $17 is pricey. The restaurant is super loud when busy and has awkward seating where the table you are seated at is inches from another table. The servers push drinks and dessert to the point where when we left, we felt uncomfortable that we hadn't ordered drinks/dessert. The prices weren't worth the meal/experience.

Fantastic place. Our server was great. The donuts are fabulous. The art on ceiling is fun. Fantastic atmosphere!!

So glad we stopped!! My daughter enjoyed the linguini con carbonara. She said it was the best she ever had -- amazing sauce, perfectly cooked pasta and crispy pancetta! I had the gnocchi with vodka sauce. Superb!!

Went there a few days ago on a Tuesday evening. Place was pretty busy, with a handful of customers waiting in entry (no host/ess at stand). Husband and I decided to sit at bar area where the pizza oven is and one chef works. One of the servers seemed flustered or annoyed we sat ourselves, but she said it was fine, and we quasi-apologized (every other time we've sat at the same spot). Took a good 7 minutes to get menus, but they had quite a few tables, and two of them were over 12 people. Ordered Caesar salads (with anchovies, why don't people do anchovies?), husband had a linguine with red clam sauce, we shared a calimari (generous appetizer portion), and a side of broccolini. Everything was great- their food is always consistent. And the service was great- they just needed another person or two on the floor. And I think they only had 2 cooks-they have an open kitchen, and those dudes never lost composure. Wish they had one or two more protein-y items (like to save my carbs for their umami-esque bread), but will continue to enjoy eating there. Want again to mention service was excellent, they were just spread a little thin- hope everyone tipped handsomely. They also have a decent wine list- had a Malbec for like $34..

I've been here a couple times and am always extremely pleased with my entire experience. I would definitely say it's the best Italian food in town. I haven't eaten here on a weekend but for two birthdays and a Monday evening and always had really great friendly service. I recently got the chicken parm and it was spectacular. The chicken was cooked to perfection and it was a fairly large helping. I think the prices are fair I've been told they make their own pasta and if you've ever tried to do that you know it takes some time, effort, and technique to get it just right. My dad had the lasagna with was such a big piece you'd need two hands to try to pick it up. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys a tasty marinara sauce, fun atmosphere, and the desire to eat everything on your plate but you may not have a stomach big enough for the job! I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to

My favorite restaurant in Missoula! Great food, great service, great atmosphere! I had the bruschetta to start with a nice glass of Pinot Grigio. I don't remember the exact wine but my server was very helpful with a recommendation. For my entree I had the Steak Marsala. It was cooked a perfect medium and melted in my mouth! Although they have plenty of tempting dessert options I was stuffed and didn't try one on this trip. I'll be back for sure!

I'm not from Missoula, but since the past few years, I spend 50% of my time here. Ciao Mambo is my choice whenever I feel like having some fulfilling Italian food. My 2 favs are Frutti Di Mare and Linguini Arrabiatta. Haven't tried anything else since every time I go, I can't not order one of these.

I absolutely love everything about Ciao Mambo. To start, the waitresses are the nicest people. They are always friendly and personable. Next, the food is always good quality and delicious. You are able to switch what you want to make any dish perfect for you. If they offered Gluten free pasta that could be nice. It is also reasonably priced for the quality of food and service! Plus, it's downtown which is a wonderful location!

Started with calamari; whole little octopuses, pretty good. Ordered the pollo alla farmagioni (spelling), breaded chicken over pasta. Pasta was really soggy, causing the breading to be soggy & come off the chicken.. no bueno. This plate was said to be placed in the brickoven, which wasn't noticeable due to sogginess of plate. Service was friendly & attentive. If I gave this place another whirl, I'd try something else. Portions are pretty big; a regular plate could gladly fill two hungry adults. Good location, great ambience.

Was highly recommended to eat here (need to find new friends). Nice italian bistro located in downton missoula. Called and made reservation - wise choice for a weekend. Started with an appetizer called Tootsie Rolls (hand rolled pasta with ricotta) that was OK but served luke warm. Primary meal was Gnocchi w/ Alfredo for Keigan (excellent in his words), Leianne's was Pasta Revenna (OK in her words), and I had the Linguini Arrabiatta (linguini was under cooked). When I mentioned it to our waitress she told me "That's how we like it here." Obviously it is not about the customer, it is about what and how "they like it." Food and service was nothing to write home about although the ambiance was decent. Appreciated the openness and the understanding of the manager. Exceptions do happen and maybe ours was one. Still think you should either 1) have wait staff inform the customer prior to ordering or 2) put it on the menu that pasta is al dente, 3) maybe both.

Yummy! Food has always been great. Especially the bread for starters. Service has always been good. I have been here several times with my husband and most recently with a group of 18. They got us all our meal with only one meal issue. They did not add tip to bill, which was nice and unexpected.

Decent portions, very expensive. probably rates a high 2-star or very low 3. We were early as we had an early flight out the next morning, so the restaurant was not crowded and the service was spot-on. Very excellent menu with well organized categories of choices. Opted for Penne alla Vodka with added sausage and Penne Isabella. Glad I opted for the $5.50 portion of sausage or the Penne Vodka would have been boring and too much blah. Wife had the Isabella which had good flavor, but kept switching her taste buds with bits of mine to get variety. Did opt for the wine special at $7 per glass and very small amounts of wine in each. The Insalata Mista was a good mix but the balsamic dressing was just too heavy so we were glad that we split a salad rather than having one each. Will return to try the pizzas which reviewers do say is good. But I agree that there are better Italian places with more reasonable prices to choose from.

Pretty good Italian food for a decent price !! The calamari was some of the best I've had, and my linguini meal was pretty good, but I wouldn't say it was amazing. But the service was amazing and the view onto the streets was fun, very good people watching ! It had a great atmosphere. There were people in regular clothes but also people in nice clothes, so it was very welcoming. There were families as well as young and old couples. Pretty diverse crowd and one again, the service was awesome.

If anyone has a hankerin' for Italian in Missoula--I always send them here. There are quite a few Italian options in Missoula and most of them just aren't good. Ciao Mambo just barely stands out among them--but it does stand out. Be ready to pay an arm and a leg to slack that craving of yours. Don't even think of ordering wine unless it's their special on Wednesdays--I think all bottles are half off. But try your favorite dish over salad instead of pasta. Their eggplant parm is super good, and the salad it comes on lets me leave without unbuttoning my jeans.

It might not be the best or fastest Italian place west of Chicago (as pictures from pro athletes say), but it is absolutely wonderful! Yes large portions, reasonable prices, and super service. Definitely someplace to come back to!

This is an excellent choice for a date night or birthday celebration. I absolutely love being able to color on the parchment tablecloths, lets me forget I'm adult for awhile :) The food is pricier but if its a special occassion then I figure why not. Their penne with vodka sauce is delicious and one of the more reasonably priced entrees. Of course one of their best dishes is the nacho appetizer. Unbelievable delectable and best shared with a large group as it can be rich. Valentine's Day is an excellent time to visit. A gorgeous red rose for every female dining there no matter her age. And they had a terrific dessert sampler that was the perfect end to a romantic meal. They will except reservations for this day but my boyfriend and I were able to get in without one...just took a waiting.

I've been here several times and I haven't been disappointed yet. I like the white paper on your table and the crayons that you can play with. It's nice to be able to play Tic-Tac-Toe while you wait for your food. The winner here are the Pasta dishes. The creamy alfredo ones are my favorite. The pizzas are also not too bad, especially when you can see the chef making it from scratch at the pizza bar! It's a tad pricey but it's a great dining experience. You really feel full after your meal and I'm pretty sure you'll have leftovers!

We were in Missoula because my 2 year old needed eye surgery. I wanted to eat somewhere nice but I was worried about bringing a tot into a nice place. We decided on Ciao Mambo's for dinner and I was so pleasantly surprised. The ambience was very warm, clean, comfortable, modern and fresh. The service was spot on and they were very kind to our 2 yr old. They brought out crayons and pizza dough for her to play with. They also brought her meal first which is a nice touch for us to be able to get her going and keep her in a good mood. I opted for the featured pinot noir and it was fabulous. I asked for a half glass and was still given a large pour. The wine menu was newly redone and it looked great. My meal was seriously one of the best meals I've had in awhile. The portion was very big and the flavors were excellent. I had the Pasta Ravenna it is bowtie pasta with a cream sauce, mushrooms, chicken, artichoke hearts and sun dried tomatoes. Nothing bland and plain ole Alfredo about it! I want to go eat it gain just writing about it. The owner was in and I always appreciate an owner talking with guests. We will definitely be back!!

Most people I know think pretty highly of Ciao Mambo, so I thought I'd give it a try. I was not disappointed. The place had a nice ambiance and was obviously popular. Still, we didn't have to wait too long for a table and service was what you expect, good . The server had a great attitude and we didn't have to ask for water and such. We shared a delicious, large entree salad (among three) as an appetizer which, with the free bread, was a very nice start. For entrees we had a pizza and pasta. Both were very tasty. Good size. A little pricey but I suppose that's to be expected from a popular restaurant. Good place for a special occasion, but I don't think I'd go there regularly due to the prices. Had we just gone across the street to The Bridge Pizza, we'd have saved about $20.

  • Steve D.

The food was typical Americanized Italian style food. The whole restaurant smacks of a chain restaurant and is nearly identical to "Romano's Macaroni Grill", down to the fact that the waiter comes to your table and writes their name, upside (so you can read) on the butcher paper on the table. The service was prompt, the atmosphere was a little loud, and the seating arrangement was fairly cramped. This would be a decent place to take a date and keep it under $40.

  • Toby V.

Qualty of food for what you pay is bad... BAD. I can get this type of food at Olive Garden, for much less money. Good wine selection, but that's it. Oily pasta, mediocre appetizers, and my cheese cake came on a slab of extra counter top they had laying around... It was odd.

  • B C.

the portions are so DANG huge, which is never appealing to me. i feel like it is a cop out, " Our food is sub-par but we give you so much to make up for it..." and the price: too much. i had a pasta dish and a side order veggie so maybe there are some hidden gems on the menu that i need to try. the place seems to always be busy. anyway, i thought it was not very innovative and not that tasty - all very heavy. i felt like i could make my own at home and enjoy it more. if it wasn't so expensive i would give it 3 stars but for $15 -$20 for pasta i expect something a little more. Also as someone else mentioned it feels very chain restaurant which is a thumbs down for me.

OK... Here's the quick breakdown: solid Italian food, great wine list, overpriced, and a high school drama unfolding before your eyes. More detail: I'm here for one night before heading up to Glacier National Park for 3 days of backpacking and want a good carb-filled meal without the spiciness of Thai or icky feeling from Mexican so I go for Italian and run into this place as I'm navigating town with my GPS. It's the first "Italian" restaurant that isn't simply a pizza joint (though they do serve pizza that's hand-tossed right in front of you). Since I was alone, I sat at the bar where I could watch all the kitchen action. After ordering, I notice that there are a bizillion people working there. At least 8 waitresses, 1 hostess, 2 water/buss girls, plus at least 7 cooks, a floor manager, a kitchen manager, and a girl whose only job seemed to be to make sure the food went to the right waitress. Luckily the service was fast, but for only about 24 tables and another dozen or so bar seats, do they really need that many people? The pizza guy, the bread guy, and the salad guy were really busy, the other cooks spent more time gabbing than cooking, and the waitresses seemed to be competing for the flirtatious looks of the floor manager. It was a high school drama! I loved it! But that won't make me give a restaurant 5 stars. Then they loose another for being overpriced. $16 for a simple chicken parm??? I guess they need to charge more to pay all those people. Go for the show!

What you'll find at Ciao Mambo are a dimly lit, comfortable dining area, good pizza and super garlicky, hot, fresh bread. The pasta dishes sounded intriguing but we didn't order any. I'd say this is a 3.5 star place from my initial visit. The pizzas were tasty and seemed like a much better value compared to the pastas, which go for nearly the same price. For 5 adults, we got 2 large pizzas and had a few leftover pieces, so the large pizzas are good for 3 people. Wine selection is pretty interesting and has a decent sized list of Italians and wines from the US and other areas.

I'm a bit conflicted of how I feel about Ciao Mambo. Certain parts of the restaurant are awesome, but others parts are not so great. The food is delicious! A bit overpriced, but very yummy pasta. My only complaint is that I felt they skimped a little bit in the amount of meat in my dish, especially considering the price of the dish. Our waitress was awesome - very attentive and welcoming, which was definitely appreciated. We came for a friend's birthday, and one waitress told us we could get a free dessert, but our waitress told us we couldn't, unless we became a Mambo member. I found it a bit frustrating that they weren't consistent in their birthday freebies, but we had all eaten way too much pasta, so maybe that was a blessing in disguise? Ciao Mambo is a great place to visit one in a while, but I think there are better restaurants in Missoula that provide more value for your money.

Incredible taste, fantastic food options and the staff could not be any better. My friend knows one of the waitresses and she slipped us a coupon for our meal. Come on!!! it doesn't get better than this. I will warn you that you will be waiting for a while if you come at peak hours.

  • Bridget J.

Used to be one of my favorite places but they obviously can't handle a large group, even with a reservation made in advance. Orders weren't taken, orders weren't filled, they totally missed the boat by not offering drinks, salads and appetizers. And then to add insult to injury, the manager blamed me when I called to complain the next day, because we didn't make a ruckus at the time and he "couldn't believe there were 10 unhappy people and he didn't know about it." Ciao, Ciao ... plenty of good restaurants in Missoula ... don't need you.

  • Kaylee M.

Good friendly service and great food. I had a pasta dish and my husband had ravioli. They were both excellent. I was nervous about the prices (between$15 and $20 a plate) but the food was well worth it. Will go back again!

  • Rowdy B.

What can I say, one star, maybe not even that. I have given this place numerous chances and I always walk away very disappointed. Yes they have very cute waitresses but that just does't make up for the food. The last time I went there I had Spaghetti and meatballs and the pasta was over cooked and the meatballs all tasted different, if that is possible, I had my wife try them and she agreed. Her dish we sent back because it was not edible. We complained but it seems they don't care. I feel bad because this place is in a great location and has huge potential but they don't do anything with it. So I will never eat here again unless they change it up a lot.

The complementary garlic bread alone might be the best meal you have ever had. GREAT food, wine, service. This place has it all and is fairly priced for quality and quantity. Why aren't you on your way??

  • Dan B.

Stopped in for a delicious lunch. My 9-yo proclaims the chicken the best he's eaten anywhere, and bemoans that it's two states away from home. (I had a bite, it was indeed delicious!) And I had a fabulous meatball hero. Friendly & knowledgable service.

    (4)
  • Barbs J.

Totally not worth it. There are a number of far better restaurants in Missoula that are cheaper, quieter, and have much, much tastier food. The wait was ridiculous, the tables were squeezed in too closely, and it was very loud. Service was subpar and the food just okay. For the prices they charge, I expect much better. Go to Biga, or even Bridge, or try Red Bird or Silk Road.

A very lively and energetic Italian place in Missoula. Great food, most of the meals are about $20, but don't expect to finish it all! You'll most likely have to box the rest unless you're sharing with somebody. Beautiful scenery and lighting, although the seating can get cramped. To me, it's the best Italian place in Missoula to eat at.

  • Brandon W.

A bit pricey, but the pizza I had was amazing. White sauce with grilled chicken and artichoke hearts - nothing short of incredible. Staff was friendly and helpful.

  • Amy B.

Aside from the loud atmosphere and waitresses in tube tops and sandals (gross!), this place is pretty darn good! Each table gets freshly baked bread that is topped with butter and garlic. It's filling but so delicious! I had the salmon salad (4 stars) and my brother had the HUGE lasagna (4 stars). Definitely going back, but maybe during the week (avoid the crowd) and with a coupon.

  • John P.

Had dinner at the Mambo the other night. The food is very good. The service was very bad. The meal came out before the drinks or the bread. We asked for the wine three time before it arrived and the waitress acted like we imposed on her. That is the bad news, the good news is it was the first time that had happened so I hope this was an anomaly. In the past I would give this restaurant 4 Texas stars, after the service last Friday night it will only recieve two because of the service.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
