You know when you leave a restaurant on a high because the food was so good? It happens so rarely. How is this restaurant not in a big city? This would be on the top 10 list in Austin where we have a disproportionate share of creatives. The food was inspired from start to finish. We ordered a ton just wanting to try as much as possible but we couldn't stop eating. The soup, the salad, the appetizer, the ravioli de jour, the cocktails, the stroganoff, mmm. We didn't leave room for dessert and I'll be forever remorseful. And, our waitress couldn't have been more attentive and sweet. Other reviews bash the service. Can you imagine trying to staff a restaurant like this in such a small town? Be realistic people. And complaining about the price when you can look at the price point before you go? I can't take your reviews seriously if these are your complaints. I'm sorry I'll probably never be in Livingston again to have another absolutely delightful experience at this restaurant. It may be worth a trip from Texas just to eat here again.

On Sunday afyernoon at 5:30, made reservations for 2 for 7 that night. After 5 minutes on hold, called back. Paul made sure the hostess picked up our call. When we arrived at 7 she said we had the tabletop looking over the kitchen and was that ok? I said: are you kidding me?!!!! Got a great table, service ok, the food...so, so. I had shrimp scampi - kind of soggy. My ceasar salad was 4 whole lettuce leaves on a plate. I've never seen that. Had been wanting to try 2SB for some time but not worth all the hype. Not our kind of place.

While looking for a relaxing dinner spot, we decided on 2nd Street Bistro. The staff was very friendly and professional. We were seated in the main dining room and were immediately asked if we would like a cocktail. We both ordered an infused vodka drink that was refreshing, flavorful and well worth the price. We each had a salad and enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere. The entrees we had were the Bistro penne and the Alaskan halibut. The halibut was some of the best I have had in many years and was cooked perfectly. The Bistro penne was also cooked perfectly and the chicken was moist and extremely flavorful. We finished the meal and split a creme brulee which was garnished with fresh berries and toasted pecans. It was also one of the best brulees we had had in a very long time. In summary, the food, service and professionalism of the staff was something you would expect from a high end restaurant in a large metropolitan city. We give 2nd Bistro our very best recommendation and know you will not be disappointed. Thanks to all the staff for a great evening and a great meal!

What a great find. We had a lovely family meal there and the food was so good. Nice salad with goat cheese. A huge bison steak that was amazing. And big enough for everyone to have some. My husband had a very nice ravioli, and son-in-law a nice looking chicken dish. The service was one of the things that made it such a great experience. Someone in our party ordered halibut but the waitress came back and apologized and said they were out. They replaced it with scallops and it was very good. When she brought us the bill, they had not charged for that meal! I protested that we had enjoyed it, but she insisted. What an outstanding gesture.

Ate here while traveling through Livingston for a night. The food was fantastic with one minor exception. We had the beet and chèvre salad (very creative presentation and an excellent mix of flavors), smoked salmon ravioli (an interesting combo that worked very well), hunter chicken (the accoutrements were excellent although the chicken was a bit off) and the steak frites (exceptional steak cooked to perfection). Our service was great and the cocktails are quite good. Overall a place I'd love to return to.

Food was acceptable, but pricey. Staff was unprofessional and rude. I would not recommend this place.

Ate here on our last night in Livingston with family. All around food was good...but the service was lacking. They could do better. Despite this it's worth a return on our next time in town.

Easily one of the best restaurants I've been in the state of Montana, really anywhere. The night after we ate there we walked by and saw a lot of commotion, turned out the speaker of the House, John Boehner was eating dinner here! My wife and I had crab cakes, moules and frites and an amazing beet & goat cheese appetizer. The wine selection was also wonderful, service was great. This restaurant would be five star in NYC. A cannot miss find in Livingston, MT.

Food was great! Could match any NYC restaurant however the service was not. They could use two busboys at busy times.

Contrary to what others have said, our experience with the service and staff here was great. From the hostess to the waitress to the busser, everyone was very friendly and dependable. The food was fantastic. We had the crab cakes for an appetizer which seemed like a brave choice being so far away from the ocean, but these were as good as any I've had at some of the nicest places in Seattle. For the main course, I had the hunters chicken and my wife had a steak. Both were cooked excellently and very flavorful. Dessert was a perfectly textured creme brûlée. I had only two minor complaints about the evening: 1) they put ice in my Manhattan and 2)things took a bit too long overall. There was a long time between ordering anything and receiving it. Great place to eat. Will eat there again. Would recommend.

I live in Bozeman and wanted to check this place out because I've heard it is extremely good, plus Anthony Bourdain has been there, which IS cool. The food was good, but not good enough to compensate for how incredibly bad the service was and how inattentive and unapologetic our waitress was for the EXTREME delay on all of it.There were four of us, and we were there for almost 3 hours. We finished two bottles of wine before our salads were even brought out. The waitress blamed it on the kitchen staff being new, and even told us that the line cook had been crying. I would have been COMPLETELY understanding of a slow kitchen. But our waitress did absolutely NOTHING to make us feel better. She gave one of the members of our party a really hard time about his ID (was even rude about it). She did not even apologize or acknowledge the slow service, until we asked, twice. And even then she was not kind of apologetic. Nothing was comped, it was expensive, and even the food wasn't as good as I expected. Might have been because of the bad service. I am sympathetic to restaurants that are slow, particularly if an explanation is given and you still feel in some way taken care of. But our waitress did none of that, and did not take any of the blame for what was going on. It is experiences like this which will keep people away, even if the food is superb. For my experience, not necessarily the food, two stars is generous.

My wife and I had heard great things about the Bistro and were far from disappointed by the food, it was very good. I was not thrilled with the hostess. We had a 5:00 reservation. We arrived on time and were seated in the bar. Even though we had a reservation, we were told they were booked. We voiced our displeasure and the hostess simply didn't care and showed us to our bar stools with a take it or leave it attitude. Others came in after, without reservations and were seated. I guess we weren't part of the local in crowd. To bad, good chef with poor front end help!

This trendy fine restaurant is a good incentive to go back to Livingston! We thought I found a hidden gem, little did we know then that Anthony Bourdain had recommended it. And my husband and I both concur. We thought, oh boy, what is there to eat here... till we walked by this hip restaurant, with a little cafe next to it. I must say we have not had this good of a food in finer places! Bread, yes! Food, oh yes. Wine, a good nod. Dessert? Mouth watering.

Last evenings session has taken my review to a 5 star. This place is rocking these days, entire staff performing at a very high level. Mussels and fries, scallops, Caesar and bistro penne rocked our world. Nicole is our favorite server, fantastic wine recommendations!

We were excited to have a great meal at the 2nd street bistro this evening. I made a reservation for 7:30, and we arrived at 7:30. We spoke to the hostess and were told that it would be a 20 minute wait, and were directed to Murray's next door for a drink, and she also threw in a caveat that if we wanted to just go ahead and eat there, we could just go ahead and do that, which I thought was very odd considering we had a reservation! We came back only to find a table was not available and were told to wait again. We left, and I can confidently say we will not be back.

We made a reservation and they didn't honor it. The hostess said people were staying longer than expected and perhaps we should try Murray's down the street. Can you believe that.

Oh my god!!!! I was visiting from LA for my boyfriends family reunion and I seriously LOVED this restaurant. I felt like I was living off of fries and meat, and I needed a quality meal. We got in and sat down and I could only afford the burger (haha). One of the best burgers of my life. Great quality and what? REAL cheddar cheese? Tasty, wonderfully seasoned deliciousness. I split a really yummy pear and candied walnut salad with my boyfriend and I think he got the pasta bolognese (I think). Good, but small portion. My burger was big, though. Big and tasty. Service was great, too!

A solid choice for great food in MT. Not far from the entrance of Yellowstone we stopped by here on our way back to Bozeman as they had one if the best looking menus in town. We decided to sample the small plates and had the Scallops over Risotto, the Short Rib, Lamb Lollipops and French Onion Soup. Hands down the short rib was the best followed by the lollipops. Both were melt in your mouth delicious. The French onion soup failed to impress. It wasn't bad but wasn't good either. I had high hopes for the scallops but they were simply good, not great. The risotto seemed under cooked and the scallops a bit too firm, but as the server pointed out we were in Montana. All in all I'd definitely recommend. The steaks looked great I wish I'd try one. From someone who usually prefers seafood if stick with the meats on this menu and I think you'd be quite pleased. The cocktails are also excellent and the have a great selection of craft brews. The service was fantastic, friendly and very knowledgable.

Have never felt so unwelcome at a restaurant. The hostess should be schooled in graciously informing guests that their reservation list is full. She did offer alternatives which I appreciated. For a more casual fair, they had Gil's around the corner or we could sit in the Murray Bar and order from the Bistro menu. Went around the corner to Gil's, but there were no menus by the door or posted, nor did anyone make any effort whatsoever to greet us. From all I could tell from the board above the counter they only served pizza and coffee. Decided to check out the Bistro menu at the Murray Bar instead. There were a stack of Gil's menus there, which is when I realized that they served more than pizza and coffee; a bunch of Murray Bar menus (I expected that) but no Bistro menu. The bar waitress scrambled around and found one, but by this time I'm over it. I'm not willing to compromise my dining experience just for the Bistro menu. The more I think about it, I don't know why they would want to either.

When there are only three, yes three, tables with diners in an otherwise empty restaurant and the hostess tells you that they can't seat you because the restaurant is "full" this is a good indication that you should go somewhere else to eat. Sadly this is not the first time something utterly bizarre like this has happened to me at the Bistro. The food is usually decent, but the unpredictable service means I likely won't be dining here any time soon. Maybe if I were Tony Bourdain they would have seated me....

I have to give it 5 stars because, for the most part, it's really wonderful. I have never had a pineapple jalapeño margharita before theirs is just the best. They will even custom make it for you if you don't like simple syrup and want straight lime juice instead. Puckery good! Almost every dish we have had there, over many, many meals and years, has been just wonderful. We had one bad experience the other night when we ordered a fish dish and explicitly ordered it without salt and without the beurre blanc with which it was described on the menu. This was for health reasons. As predicted, it came with both. Now there is something wrong between the waitress, the person who calls out the orders to the chef and the chef. Somewhere along the way it got screwed up and, frankly, there is really no excuse. PLEASE WRITE DOWN THE ORDERS AS THE CUSTOMER ORDERS SOMETHING AND DELIVER IT THAT WAY.

The food is very salty and expensive. I had a soup that seamed to me water with salt and a grilled salmon that was veeery salty. I don't recommend this place.

This is the second time I've eaten here and my first real disappointment. I had the Bison Bourguignon. It was incredibly salty and far too spicy as it relates to heat. The potatoes were barely done. The bison was not bad, but otherwise ruined by reckless use of salt and too much spice. Our server was very nice and the scallop dish my lady had was decent. Overall I was very disappointed. I'll be looking for other places to dine next time I'm in Livingston.

Another fantastic dinner from Brian Menges and his crew. From the house aged Manhattan to the chocolate bombe for dessert, everything was quite delicious. My party had the french onion soup, the steak, the pork, the lamb, the stroganoff, and my daughter had the meatloaf and with the exception of my daughter, we clean plated everything. Excellent as always.

This is not a steak and potatoes place but rather unique food. We really enjoyed it they make there blue cheese dressing from scratch but it was too spicy for me to eat so they took them off our bill. The service was great. Our experience took about 2 hours so they don't rush you and you can enjoy the food

I started with the Crab Cakes on Fried Green Tomatoes, Jesus-God--I am pretty sure I cried after having tried these. I then had the pumpkin seed/pear salad on mixed greens with a very light dressing. I really do not like dressing on my salad, but this was perfect. The main dish was a special for the night, Short Ribs. They were yum. The food was overall great and timed perfectly. What i liked most about his place were the people. The server spent time with us and it wasn't an uptight place. The food was upscale but the atmosphere was chill and so were the chefs. We sat at the table near the kitchen, which is designed for the customer to see them cooking. Our server knew what was on the menu and explained it in Non foodie terms. Oh, and she recommended some great local beers. Ingredients are local and fresh. Anthony Bordain went here and featured this restaurant on No Reservations. I have posted a picture that tells you just how he feels about this place.

When I return to Montana, I don't expect to find a great place to eat outside of the traditional steakhouse. I was pleasantly surprised to find this place in Livingston. It was incredible, the Hunter's Chicken was sumptious with the right portions coming together perfectly. My companion really enjoyed her pizza and the service was excellent. My only gripe about this place is the emphasis they put on "organic" and locally sourced products. It seems a bit pretentious and a un-Montana for my homeland. Their home-made cucumber gin is quite good and rivals Hendricks, they get the fifth star for that.

Service Excellent. Bread excellent. Whipped butter excellent. Food: not great. Here's why: Meatloaf underseasoned. Needs more salt. Pizza w/ Moroccan lamb was overpowered by the olive. Would be nice to taste lamb, not olive, pizza. Seafood paella: should use good quality stock for a Paella. Seafood was cooked well, but paella itself lacked flavor. I guess for montana it's alright, but if you come from a big city with good food, you'd probably be disappointed here.

We were recomeended the place by some friends we were visiting so we thought we would give it a try. Stopped in Sunday Sept 11th around 7:30 PM. and stood in the "lobby area" and noticed the menu signed by Anthony Bourdain and the glowing review the accompanied it. After reading the review we were greeted by a agitated hostess who asked if we had reservations to which we replied "no" and we were only here for drinks. She said if we wanted to eat it would be quite a wait so I asked to sit in the bar. She was getting more agitated as additional folks were arriving with her greetings being just as kurt to the new arrivials. The hostess then stated there were NO clean tables in the bar and it would be a "while" till she would have one ready. I said no worries we would wait for an available seat AT the bar. It did strike me as odd that there were quite a few tables available in the bar that appeared to be clean and ready but I dropped it. After lookiing over the menu to see the offerings for wine and apps, we spotted an area at the bar that a patron had just vacated. I apporached the bar with my wife and kindly asked the bartender "if the previous patron had left and were these two seats available"? He shot back a "well it WILL be if I get it cleaned"!...with an attitude taken from a Robert DeNero movie... My wife looked and I looked at each other and could not believe how in the timeframe of 10 minutes we manged to be rudly greeted by a hostess and then again by the bartender. We promptly elected to leave the establishment with my vow to address this on Yelp! Just because you get reviewed by Anthony Bordain (Yes I have seen all his shows and eated in his places as well) dosnt give you the right to treat people like you are an "A" list invite only eatery in NYC or LA. I have been to NYC and LA many times and have been treated better in both cities in every instance. Too bad I didnt stay for the "wonderful food" which im sure was to be served with a welcoming attidute. Listen up 2nd st...I got it that this is probably the biggest thing to happen to Livingston MT since electricity...but if you want to stay in business for the long run...start with the attitude. Ohterwise you will end up like the rest of the storefronts in Livingston...VACANT!

The food is always excellent but the service is unpredictable, and in a lot of local opinion, pretty bad. I try to eat there every time I visit. However, the last time I visited we walked out after were seated and waited for service for more than 15 minutes. The server who was waiting on the table next to us actually rolled her eyes at us and we took our business to the Chop House. I still can't decide if I'll go back. The food is excellent, and spendy, so service should reflect the price.

Livingston is very fortunate to have this restaurant. Very friendly service and some good Big Sky food. The fried pork rilletes were really good. Don't see a reason to go anywhere else if you are in town or even remotely close.

Visiting for the first time and been twice already - plan to return again before leaving town. Outstanding food, farm fresh and sustainable philosophy - very reasonable prices as compared to equivalent in other big cities. Tried three different salads all delicious and fresh picked greens - outstanding - cannot find similar quality in Los Angeles anywhere near the price or warm home atmosphere. As others have said, salads are lightly dressed, perfectly balanced, delicious: pear and pumpkin seed, endive, or mixed greens with pistachio crusted goat cheese medallion. We also tried pesto pizza - another winner. Finally a dinner special beef tenderloin with mashed potatoes and green beans was perfectly prepared. Service is friendly and professional. Some may think it's slow, but all dishes are prepared to order, and besides, what is the hurry when you're in Livingston, MT?

An awesome option in Montana. Though the menu could use a little reworking (the burger was under pizza), the food came out excellent. Said burger was cooked a perfect medium-rare and most everyone around the table was pleased with their meal. The drink list -- beers, wines, and cocktails -- was extensive, and my pineapple jalapeno margarita was amazing. The service was friendly but very slow the night we were there. It took 15 minutes to order drinks and 45 minutes for food to arrive. All in all, a good (but slow) pick. FYI, for large parties, they also have a private back room.

Yum. Seriously, yum. I don't want to say I'm a food snob, but having lived in 4 major US cities including New York, eaten my way around the world AND worked in multiple restaurants, I'm kind of a food snob. where to start... The food: NOM. My entire reason for coming here was to get the locally raised, organic, never left the state steak. The only way I will eat meat is if I know where it came from, I had not had red meat in a year and this was by far the best option within Park county. I'm a big fan of farm to table and this was a perfect example of why. The creme brulee was classically good, the seasoning on the corn was perfect, my Mom had her first mojito ever... which was good, even compared to Miami mojitos. 3 of us had grilled sweet corn, salads, steak, drinks, desserts and coffee for about $150 with tip. Service: Not NYC white glove, but this is not the place for that. The waitress was very good, on it and friendly. Her voice was a little loud, but when that's the biggest complaint about the night... I really can't find fault. Kindness: My mom is physically disabled and uses a cane to get around. It can take her a while to get up and around, and sitting for a long time is also very uncomfortable for her. We were seated in a booth that gave her plenty of space and the entire staff was very kind to her and helped her get up and around. All in all, we'll be back.

Baseball + Steak= Delicious! Stopped in after a day on the rivers for a bite with some friends. We didn't have a reservation but they were able to accomodate us in the bar area. The dining room looked nice and well appointed. I had a Baseball Steak with some kind on green mystery sauce that I don't remember the name of. I'm calling it yum. A pasta dish and a chicken dish rounded out what was ordered for entree's. I must admit my friends weren't as excited about those dishes but said they are good overall. Our server was excellent. She was visibly busy but we never felt neglected. Being a former server and bartender I could see her right on top of her other tables as well. I tend to notice these things. Since the LBG was not open and I'm not a fan of the Chop House this is my new favorite Livingston dinner spot.

Every single time I have been here my food has been served up beautifully, timely and superbly. The service is impeccable. My experiences have never been less than enjoyable and fabulous. The NY steak was excellent, cooked just as I ordered. I have also had the beef stroganoff as well as a few other items on the menu, all are amazing! I enjoy the cocktails very much and they have a great wine selection as well.

Ate there twice in 2 days. Great salads, small plates and entrees. had scallops salmon and okra , all prepared excellently. Friendly chef ,bartender and servers made for an excellent dining experience. Had the the chocolate dessert to top off the meal and was totally satisfied. If in Livingston it is a must stop. I would come back to Livingston just for this restaurant. Kudos!!

We arrived here at 9pm after the drive down from east glacier. Having spent a couple of rainy days in the back country, we were looking full hippie, earth smells and all. Awesome food, an extremely hip, yet sophisticated thirty-something staff, and a very rare A+ from me. Bravo!

Love the concept which highlights local and sustainable food. The food was great but our service was a little below par for the quality of the place. I think the server might have been new or having an off night. I would come again if I were in the area.

Busy, busy restaurant but busy for a reason! Make a reservation or try to slip into the bar for dinner. A bit pricy but you have the opportunity to eat as though you were in a big city and had amazing food to eat! Id go there again in a heartbeat!

  • Ethan R.

A tad overrated. For $36 I expect a steak to be bigger and better than the one I got. Service was very weak too. Even cutting the waitress some slack for the place being mobbed, there's no excuse for bringing the coffee and dessert 15 minutes apart. Great cocktails, though. Would I go back? Probably not.

With this restaurant getting such raves and its emphasis on locally sourced meat, we were pretty disappointed in the meat. To start with the positive, the scallops starter was really good. We also had a fabulous bottle of pinot noir. Our waitress was enthusiastic, including about the pork chop I ordered (it will be so tender you can cut with a fork). Sadly, it was 'tough as an old boot', as my dinner companion said. I could barely cut it with my serrated knife and it was hard to chew. I didn't eat much of it. The accompanying polenta was coated with deep fat fry and the green beans were pretty chewy too. My companion's beef tenderloin was tasteless and rather tough. All in all, rather a let down. They did give us a free dessert to take away.

After our drive from East Glacier, we stopped for dinner here. It was amazing from start to finish. Since I had read such good reviews, I wanted to try all the courses. Everything was nicely seasoned. I did not need to add salt or pepper which is definitely a change. Plus, we didn't need to be dressed up to get a table. I started with the pineapple & jalapeño margarita. The flavors were balanced and delicious. I had both the scallops with risotto and mussels with fries. The risotto and scallops were nicely cooked and the mussels were cooked in a delicious liquid. For dinner, I had the steak (MT raised beef). It had an amazing flavor! For dessert, I moved my internal organs to fit a slice of blueberry&pear pie. I did not regret feeling overstuffed for the rest of the evening. If you're near Livingstone, it's worth a stop or detour.

Who knew there was such amazing food to be found in Montana! We stopped here to visit a friend, who met us for dinner here. It was delicious. I started with the field greens with pistachio crusted goat cheese. The salad was perfectly yummy. I then had the scallop with risotto appetizer, which was as large as everyone else's dinner orders. The scallops were perfectly cooked and the risotto was so good with crawfish and basil. Absolutely delicious. My boyfriend had the seafood stew that had lots of fresh seafood and he absolutely loved. Very cute restaurant, simple with a few outdoor tables. But seems like you need a reservation, we had one, but got the very last table in the bar. Worth a special stop if you pass through town!!

Overpriced and undercooked. Livingston could do better. Do not be fooled by the signed menu by Anthony Bourdain, the chef does not offer these items to his daily customers. To begin, we were met at the door by a very rude waiter/bartender who stated that, "obviously you don't have a reservation do you? We may not be able to seat you for a while. You will have to speak with the hostess.". Who, by the way, immediately sat us at a high top. Our waiter, Jim, was the only saving grace and the reason for the one star. However, a special appetizer that we ordered turned out 15 minutes to be unavailable. We decided to try another- the sea scallops. The scallops were undercooked and the crayfish risotto overcooked. However, after a long day at Yellowstone we remained optimistic that the rest would be better. The salad, $8.00 field greens with no dressing/flavor a paper-thin slice of tomato and carrot, with a chunk of goat cheese was disappointing. The goat cheese was delicious, but not worth the money. That brings me to the main course- a $24.00 pasta that was over cooked with broth-boiled prawns and shredded soggy prosciutto. Honestly, this was one of the worst fine dining meals I have had. I truly feel sorry for the Livingston locals, the chef and/or owners are taking advantage of them. It is clear that the people of this area have a desire for fine dining, but the 2nd Street Bistro is a joke. And if the chef is in such a hurry to get home, that the food quality suffers- it is clear that he/she is not meant to run this type of establishment Chef, open a breakfast and lunch joint and call it a day.

Pretty good food and always consistent. The wine list is marginal but usually has what you are looking for. Pizza night on Sunday is AWESOME. It's not as intimate or cool as the LBG but definitely a great place with a solid track record for good food and service.

Best food in Livingston by far. Baked brie appetizer was amazing. Duck and chicken made excellent entrees. Filet mignon is juicy, tender and excellent. French press coffee with desert.
