Being from California, one of the things I miss most since moving to Montana is the wide variety of amazing food. I have found some pretty good places here but I was super excited when walking around downtown Kalispell to find this new Mexican restaurant that I hadn't seen before or tried. We went on a date night and the service was amazing. The women were so friendly and the food was AUTHENTIC. Not that I have anything against "tex-mex" but having been used to super authentic, and spicy food, it doesn't compare. I got the fish tacos not battered to avoid gluten allergies so they were able to cook the fish in olive oil and garlic. Then we shared the enchiladas. Got one with green sauce and one with red. The red sauce was super spicy but AMAZING. The portions are big so you don't have to worry about getting skimped out on which is nice. The chips and salsa came quick and are both homemade and taste delicious. The service and decor was just the best. Definitely one of our new favorite restaurants in the valley!

My $12 burrito was underwhelming. Plain wrapped up beans, cheese, rice and chicken. Nothing with it, no sauce, cheese on top... Nothing. I ate it with my hands like a fast food burrito type place. If you like salsa with your burrito, it is $2 extra. Comes with guacamole inside but mine only had it on half. I didn't actually want a burrito but they were out of the carne asada so I was in a pinch to find something else and the lady said this was the special. . Our water glasses sat empty for the duration of our meal, and no one was friendly.

The place is clean and the outdoor area nice. Our favorite food is Mexican so we have eaten a lot of great Mexican food. The chips here are store bought which is where I think a place like this makes a mistake. Good fresh made chips would make a huge first impression. The salsa was good with tomato and onions.i ordered the Mexican Bowl and paid 3 dollars more 13 dollars total for Carne Asada. The bowl was a cereal type bowl with small chucks of meat that were a bit fatty. My husband had Carnitas that he said were good. I would say an average Mexican food experience. The credit card process was different. We had to go to the counter and punch the info into the card machine ourselves. They need to upgrade to a system where they can handle the transaction without a fast food type credit system. Employees were pleasant.

I went to this restaurant for lunch because I was craving Fajitas and because of the 5 stars it has on Yelp. I give many reviews and travel the world, so had faith. However. After eating there I am exaggerating and being nice giving them a 3-star rating, and here is why: 1) I think a restaurant needs to earn a 5-star rating. A 3 is what you should expect from a restaurant. Good food, atmosphere, service and fair price. They only earn a 4 or higher by earning it with above-average or exceptional levels in those areas. I did not see any category warranting higher. I read these other reviews giving 5 stars and think they must be friends of the owner or they have no idea what a REAL 5-star Mexican restaurant is like, like I do. 2) They charge $2.00 for each refill on chips and salsa. In my world travels, only low-balling Mexican restaurants who do not have above average food and can't get the customers through their doors do this. The shoe fits. Add insult to injury, the chips and salsa do not taste fresh and home-made, but out of a bag and can from a grocery store. Below average quality on this. 3) It is obvious another Mexican restaurant was at this establishment in the past due to the typical paint on the walls, but everything inside it now says "CHEAP!" The cheapest 1970's cafeteria-style uncomfortable vinyl chairs and square veneer tables. It is not a good first impression sitting down in there like that. 4) They only serve fajitas after 5 pm. What?! 5) Because I could not have Fajitas I had the Camerones de Diabla, another favorite of mine. When it came out (in adequate time) it smelled like a combination of Vinegar and Tobasco sauce. However once I started eating it, I could tell that it was actually a Vinegar and Habenero sauce. I like Diabla sauce. I like hot food. But this sauce, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being "normal, very spicy Diabla sauce" and 10 being "rush me to the hospital hot" it was a 9.5. It was just about too hot to eat, and for me to say that takes a lot. I make habanero salsa at home but not near that hot. And sadly it just tasted like very hot vinegar. I ate it, but I won't order that again. I like flavor with my spice and it lacked flavor. The waiter said its the hottest thing on their menu. I bet. I may go there again someday if I can try their fajitas but otherwise I was sufficiently unimpressed to go back. There are other Mexican restaurants I will try first.

***The #1 Mexican restaurant in Kalispell*** If your in Kalispell and you feel the need for Mexican food El Rancho is a good selection. They are slightly overpriced on most items, however it is solid Mexican food in a Mexican food desert. When they opened this place these people over reached on their menu and bit off a little more than they could chew on the overall labor of a restaurant. Too many hours, Too many menu items, Too few staff. Sometimes that how you fail. in this case I think they realized their limitations and scaled back quickly. This saved the ship from sinking but their not out of troubled waters yet . The family run establishment is held together by three generations of hard workers (thanks to grandma and grandpa I'm sure). They run a split shift restaurant serving breakfast and lunch until 3 then close 3-5 then open till 9. although google still lists them as being open 11am-10pm. In my option if they lowered their prices slightly, stayed open another hour, and stopped taking siesta (an afternoon nap, as they are closed from 3-5), and possibly hired one more person in the kitchen they would take over and do a grand reopening emerging as the M.F.C. (Mexican Food Cartel) in Kalispell. In Kalispell and looking for Mexican food? GO to EL Rancho!...(if its not between 3-5 or Sunday)

They get five stars for their awesome shrimp tacos. Bueno!!! Plus the decor is fresh, bright and welcoming. Not your typical Mexican decor but a nice twist with the colors. Their menu lacked some of my personal faves like tostadas but it made up with some unusual items like jalapeño popper pizza. Also, there is no alcohol so it would have been nice to see some nifty fruity drinks. I'd do this again for sure.

The atmosphere is refreshing, light, newly updated and welcoming! There were fresh flowers on each table. The customer service was fantastic! Each person I met that worked there was so kind. The owner served the food to me directly. The prices are reasonable for the amount of food and I was very pleased. Plus the food was great!! I will definitely be coming back when I'm in town in the future! If you're looking for a great, local, family owned restaurant- this is the one!

The restaurant gets a "meh" rating from our family. It has potential and could improve significantly with some menu changes and server training. The food is very mediocre and needs some flavor and spice (do not order the Mole, it is basically a yucky pulled chicken in some version of watery BBQ). Queso is a must and they do not have it. Servers are very slow and disorganized (bring half drink orders at a time and deliver food to wrong table) but are really friendly. The atmosphere is kind of welcoming and adds to the potential this place has, but falls short as-is.

I am from cail and just moved to MT and I had given up on finding any good Mexican food like back home. After I read the reviews from the other people I had to give this place a try. The food made me feel like I was back home. I will be going back to this place for sure. Don't miss out on this place it's a must have type of place.

There ain't much Mexican food in Kali, but this place is as close to Cali as it gets! We first experienced this family's fare in Whitefish at La Hacienda and we really enjoyed it. Now that they and we have moved into Kali, they are a perfect addition to downtown!! Mi hubby y yo chose the Trio Fajitas. $24 for steak, chicken and shrimp fajitas with gauc, sour cream, rice and beans. Enough for two!! Chips and salsa are the bomb. Way better then Casa Mexico's. I could use more spices in my fajitas and rice, but I won't doc them because yes, I know, this is MT and people tend to not like spicy here. But they'll give ya their hot sauce if ya ask!! The ambiance is beautiful and welcoming. It was pricier than expected but the food is fresh and we felt great after our meal, very nourished. They have a different menu for lunch and dinner. Love that they respond to their customer's ideas and suggestions to only improve upon what is great already. Thank you for your lovely food...

We have traveled all over Mexico and the southwest US. enjoying Mexican dishes. I gave it five stars becouse we are in Montana if we were in the south west I would have gave it three and a half to four stars. My wife and I travel all over the northwest using our smart car to track down good ethnic food. Here our rating for Mexican food In western Montana Flathead valley # 1 El Rancho ( my need GPS ) Ronan #2 Sonoran Grill Butte # 3 Christina Cantina ( real hard to find but worth it )

Nice decor and well kept place. Friendly service. Our meals were fresh and tasty and not heavy with salt or oils. No alcohol only drawback.

Great Mexican restaurant in downtown Kalispell! After Tres Hermanas closed, this valley was lacking anything autentico. Finally we get something that reminds me of a legitimate CA style sit down Mexican place. It's not a whole in the wall taqueria, so the prices reflect that of any other sit down establishment in the valley, but the flavors are authentic and it's run by a Mexican family, not a bunch of gringos serving you watered down Montana style Tex-Mex(gross)!

Wonderful food. Best Mexican in flathead valley! Authentic. Gluten friendly. The staff all appear to be family and really know how to cook the Mexican food. We have been here multiple times and just love the food. Our kids can be picky and even they love the meals!

Had dinner there yesterday evening. We loved everything their complimentary salsa and chips were flavorful and tasty. We order their guacamole, and loved that too. They make a very delicious beef fajita you get so much food, and all very good. Our two girls shared a kids Chicken Quesadillas, which was apparently really good as well because there was nothing left. We will definitely return in future if in area again.

Food was not good at all. I was hoping this would be the same quality as the Rising Sun Bistro (which had the space before), but this is just your run-of-the-mill, side-of-the-highway Mexican. I got my leftovers boxed to go (they do have big portions) but the next day I still thought it was gross and threw them out. Way too expensive for the quality.

The food was served hot, and to my liking. I would have given this place 4 or 5 stars, but the flow of our experience wasn't awesome. We were seated, and brought water right away. The hostess seemed pleasant, and well informed about the restaurant. However, when the waitress came to take our order everything we were hoping to eat was not available. The front of the menu has mostly lunch items, and the back has mostly dinner. The menu itself doesn't say this, and the hostess didn't explain it to us as we sat. Needless to say, our hearts were set on Chile Relleno's and Carne Asada. When the only meat available was chicken or ground beef we considered leaving. The waitress said they were going to redo the menu soon. I wouldn't return for dinner, but a lunch would be great. To be fair the food was the best Mexican I have had in the Flathead Valley. The service was also generally friendly and accommodating.

Amazing food and service. I enjoyed it so much I took a friend the next day! El Rancho is all about making it a dining experience. It is a family run establishment with a warm pleasant can do attitude. We asked a lot of questions and made special requests that didn't ruffle a single feather. This is Mexican food that doesn't need to be hidden under 5 lbs of cheese...great flavors and they spice to your request. Their breakfast is now my fav in the valley!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
