Our primary motivation for selecting this place was its close proximity to our hotel (Super 8 Helena). After a long day of riding, the thought of jumping back on our motorcycles was not at the top of our list. On the bright side, the restaurant had an extensive beer list (draft and bottle -- more than shown in the photo that another reviewer submitted). We selected a couple of IPAs from separate Montana breweries -- both tasty, but the hoppier seasonal IPA was the winner). On the so-so front, dinner was plentiful, but slow coming out of the kitchen. It was reasonably hot but not "piping". I ordered the 10 oz prime rib special, which came with Texas toast, soup or salad (mine with some purported blue cheese dressing -- more like ranch with a little blue cheese essence added. Leafy green lettuce, croutons, and pickled beets.). The prime rib was cooked fine, and it was OK -- not the melt-in-your-mouth kind. Baked potato was excellent, and came with customary dollups of sour cream and butter, and bacon (bits). The spousal unit ordered a prime rib sandwich, which looked like an 8oz cut tucked under a single slice of the aforementioned Texas toast, and a mini-salad. A friend ordered a taco salad which came with shreaded, not ground beef -- a plus I think. He ordered a side of clam chowder which was proclaimed as "good" -- I can't attest personally. We were all very hungry and thirsty, which might provide an upward bias on the food score. Biggest problem was that the main courses were S-L-O-W coming from the kitchen -- I wondered if there was only one cook. At least it wasn't cold. Service was slow but courteous -- the wait staff seemed a bit overworked as the restaurant was relatively full. Would I eat here again? Under the same conditions, yes. However, I'd probably explore the brewpub around 2 miles down the road if I could convince my wife and friends to jump back on the bikes again after a long ride through Yellowstone.... FYI - The restaurant side serves beer and wine only. The adjoining saloon is a full bar. Also, no AmEx -- just Visa or Mastercharge (cash also graciosly accepted).

Went in for lunch on Wednesday and had the ham & pea soup...it was delish!!! The service was awesome we were seated right away and our server was very pleasant. To the folks that didn't enjoy the experience you might want to forget the past and give it one more try...it will be worth it!!! We also found out that OE is listed as one of the restaurants that dineinmt.com delivers for. Another plus!!!!

My wife loved this place, I forget what she had to eat. I had the Chicken cordon blue, it was to dry to swallow well. I had to chase every bite just so I didn't choke. The appetizers were pretty good, I like the look and feel of the place, maybe I'll try something else like a steak next time.

Was not my first choice on date night as I have been dissabpointed in the past. The inside still looks the same but the food quality has vastly improved. I was pleasantly surprised. My only complaint is that I ordered a couple of drinks virgin and one was not.

We want to love the Overland. They have a great beer list and one of the only happy hours in Helena. The first few times we went, things were decent. The dragon sauce is delicious, as is the balsamic dressing. So, why only one star?? Service. It's terrible. Horrible. It would be laughable if it weren't so maddening. The last two times we went, it took forever to be acknowledged. Then a similarly long wait to place an order. The two wait staff spent their time chatting with friends, ignoring their tables for extended periods of time. Need something? You will have to awkwardly interrupt their conversations. Save your time and money. Helena has far better establishments.

Love the nachos and burgers, some of the best in Helena! Service is hit or miss depending on when you go.

I'm a fan this time. Tried it again for a lunch meal. This time service and the food were great! They might have the best nachos in Helena! The Wings were good this time. We will go back here again for the bar and appetizers!

Great beer, A-Maz-zing wings, packed fun crowd. Wish I was in town longer for more snacks on snacks.

The food here is awesome...especially the Dragon Wings (Best wings I've ever had!) and the Prime Rib! The Reuben is to die for and so is the Crab Salad! The service is awesome and the drinks are great! It's my neighborhood pub and I just love this place! It's got a casual environment so it's comfy and a relaxing place to unwind after a busy day. The manager of the Overland however is RUDE & bitchy all of the time. She treats her employees horribly and is always assuming the very worst of them. Good thing she's rarely around, or I'd have to find a new place to hang out. Other than her, this place is a true gem in Helena!

I've lived in Helena for 5 years and never been here. I drive past it all the time going to St. Peter's. Decided to try it, the parking lot always seems fairly full, so that's a good sign right? I was a little shocked at the prices, not because I mind paying that much but because the atmosphere was certainly lacking and the menu was very boring. I had the Overland Chicken which the waitress assured me was the best dish on the menu. Wrong. The chicken was super dry, the sauce on top was not any type of hollandaise sauce I've ever seen, It was just plain gross. The waitress was nice and attentive, though. Won't be eating there again.

Dragon Wings are absolutely the best and make sure to eat in the bar, they are usually nicer. Other than that, service is very wishy washy. You never know what you are going to get, I've had way more horrible service there than good. I'm hooked on the dragon sauce, and if it wasn't for that I would never ever go back.

This place is forgettable at best. The food options are like everything else in Helena, chicken sandwiches, burgers, mediocre steak, etc... and they don't do a good job on any of it. Stale fries, dry chicken, overall not got food.

I hate it when I read bad reviews and go anyway because in the ancient past I liked something. Time of wait. One star terrible I mean 40to minutes to place an order??? Waitress kept telling us a bus made it so busy. The bus left as we pulled up was this residual busy? Half the restaurant was empty. What a joke definitely not enough help on a Sunday night. I mean you think people might want to go out on a Sunday night? My daughter asked for BBQ sauce got it fifteen minutes later after asking three times and she was done eating. Look I made it clear I wasn't happy about waiting 40to minutes to place an order you think she would have done everything she could to try and make us happy. Instead we have to listen to her whine to every customer in our section that she had been there since 9AM. Felt like that's when we should have showed up to order dinner for 6PM. Now to the food. Salad and soup came with dinner and the soup was cold and the lettuce was warm. My chicken was bone dry. The BBQ my daughter ordered was decent. The Ceaser salad was over priced for the tiny bit of chicken they throw on it. Overall this place has screamed downhill. Anyone who reads this review and eats there consider yourself forwarned. And make sure you write a review saying I was right. Go somewhere else.

Go on Wednesday, for Happy hour and Wing Wednesday. The Dragon sauce is too spicy for me. I do the barbecue sauce. We had a burger, pretty good. A bit pricey though.

***** This place is great for a late night Blackfoot IPA beer and incredible chicken wings! *****

Overall, the Overland wasn't bad, but it wasn't good, either. The bar (where we sat) is spacious and comfortable, with a good selection of beer. It is slightly noisy, but you can still have a conversation. The dress code appears to be popped collars, tribal tattoos, Axe body spray, Ed Hardy, and embroidered jeans for men and women... Our server was pleasant, but service was very slow. The burger was good, but the Rueben, like so many sub-par Ruebens, suffered from acute soggy-bottom disease, and, oddly had tomato on it. The sauce was also, strangly, served on the side. I should have been more suspicious, since they referred to the Rueben as "famous", a universal warning sign. The Dragon mushrooms were bizarre: whole sautéed mushrooms swimming in Dragon Sauce, a very sweet, gingery, teriyaki-ish goo, and topped with melted cheese. Typically, one does not associate cheese with Asian flavors, and with good reason. An equivalent would be nacho cheese on kung pao tofu. Not entirely indelible, but the off-kilterness of the combo will make you feel queasy. Despite the beer selection being good, the beer quality isn't. Based on the taste of my beer, they should review their tap-line draining and cleaning protocol.

I've eaten here a few times since moving back to Helena and I'll tell you right off the bat that one of those stars is just for their Dragon Sauce, I've only had it on the wings but I want to try the mushrooms too, it's delicious and has only been too salty once. We also order the wings to go from here often. The service here varies from uninterested to rude, on one instance when we took most of our wedding party for wings and drinks we waited for 15 minutes for menus until I finally got them myself. Tried to place our order at the bar and were told "it doesn't work that way, go back and wait" and when she finally came to take our order one person paused for one second and she said "you know it would really help if you all ordered at once so I didn't have to come back here" and then when told we would be sharing a few things (50 wings! That's a sizable dish right there) she heaved and exasperated "You guys are killing me!" and collapsed into an empty chair at our table to take the rest of the order. A memorable experience for sure, just probably not the type you are looking for. On another occasion I ordered a rueben that came with two measly pieces of corned beef, about 7 strands of sauerkraut, no sauce and a tomato (for some reason). At first I just asked for a side of sauerkraut to fill it in with, which came ICE COLD, so I finally asked the manager for a new one, which was beautiful by the way, and free. I like that it was taken care of but it should have started that way! I've had steaks that were OK never fantastic. In conclusion, just go sit at the bar and have the Dragon Wings, if you want dining, fine or otherwise, go somewhere else.

Great "western" ambiance, good selection of beer 12 local (all Montana), 6 neighboring states (wa & or) and 6 typical domestic (bud, bud light, miller etc.). folks tout their steak, well bad news, the Steak was tasteless. I don't mean bad, I mean "absent of flavor" so I had steak sauce flavored meat. Some like that, I prefer a piece of dead cow to stand on its own. I will go back, but I will not go there for a steak, more like a burger or chicken joint. Great little place to watch the game and have a beer!
(3)Don S.
Freaking abysmal! The NY steak I ordered was pure gristle and fat, save 3ounces of "beef" that somehow managed to be the least flavorful piece of meat I have ever eaten. My colleague ordered something weird off of the veggie menu......of course they didn't have it. Please do yourself and Helena a favor, go anywhere else in Helena, and let this armpit of a place die a merciful death.

Food? Average to below. I ordered a crab salad tonight. The snow crab was shredded, out of a can, and lacked flavor. The lettuce? That white iceberg stuff we all hate. Cucumbers? Dry and not at all tasty. I did get a few free beers for waiting, as.... Service? I sat in the lounge/bar area and heard the bartender, twice, tell people that there were two of them on staff. It was busy. And they were doing their best to keep up. Dude. It's a popular local hangout. Maybe the locals don't mind waiting 20 minutes for service, but I expect better. Why two stars versus zero? It's close to hotels and requires zero driving after a few beers. It's good for people-watching, most of the time. Will I return? Yes. But only because it's close to the hotel I typically stay at when I'm in town for work. They do have good burgers and, as one reviewer stated, their dragon sauce is amazing. Other than that? Not much. I still don't get why their parking lot is packed every single night...

Once I was finally able to eat at Overland Express, I was pleased. I tried twice before and the dining room closed earlier than the sign outside said, which I a big reason for the 3-star rating. We went for lunch and I got chicken strips, salad and cheesecake. My husband had the buffalo burger, salad, and apple pie. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't all that memorable. The chicken strips were a bit dry, I probably wouldn't order them again. The food was by no means bad, and there are other menu items that we would like to try. However, we went about a month ago and haven't had the urge to go back since. We tend to eat dinner late in the evening and after being sent away twice even though the sign outside said they should still be serving kind of took the overland express off the list of dinner options. Hopefully we'll have a chance to see what everyone seems to be raving about.

a great dinner all courses were terrific. Fresh green crispy salad, beautiful large shrinmp cocktail, delicious steak, amazing dinner and great service. Go here.

how can you make a steak dinner better? a baked potato? Mashed potatos? nope, try HASHBROWNS! yep, i said it, and yes i ordered it... the steak was really good here, lots of flavor to it, only thing is that it had a little more fat then i expected, but none the less amazing dinner.

I have only ever eaten their Dragon Wings on the suggestion of my sister and I absolutely LOVED them. I've never had that type of sauce on wings before, but it was really very good.

Should be renamed the "Overpriced Express." Steak was like shoe leather! Drive down the road to Silver Star Steakhouse, you'll thank me!!!
(1)Mike A.
I had a steak and it was good. However, they really need to serve all their food piping hot. To me that is an issue with the servers, not the cook. I have been there several times and overall I would recommend it.

On a recent business trip to Helena, I have asked the hotel staff to recommend a good place to eat and was referred to Overland Express. After a short walk, I finally found the restaurant and first impression was the decor is like a ranch style interior and exterior. The restaurant is split into two section, to the right is the bar / lounge and to the left is the restaurant section. Upon sitting down, on the table was a pitcher of ice water for self service. Glancing through the menu, it seem the restaurant has a fairly good mix of food from salad, soup, chicken, pork ribs, steaks and some shrimp dishes. Asking for recommendation from the server was not helpful as I got the "every thing's good" routine. I decided to give the 16oz Rib eye a try. There was two soup option a vegetable soup or tomato cream, three potato option (hash brown, french fries, or baked potato). I opted for the baked potato and tomato cream soup. The soup came quickly and overall was just okay nothing really special. Then out came my 16oz Rib eye and I was hungry and wanting to eat some steak. However this is where the whole dish falls apart, the steak was bland no flavoring, the grill was probably not hot enough when they cooked the steak as the outside color of the steak does not look grilled. The steak was also not a high quality meat as half of the steak was a big slab of fat. No marbling into the meat probably also contributed to the lack of flavor. The only thing that was right was the steak was cooked medium rare as requested. As for the side dish the potato was okay but it's not really difficult to make baked potato.

I'm working in Helena this week and tried out this steakhouse for dinner. I really enjoyed it. Wish I had room for dessert. Great menu selection, limited with seafood. Primarily shrimp scampi entrees. Although my server was very nice, I couldn't pry suggestions out of her. "Every thing's good". Weak! The vegetable soup was great! I'd get a big bowl of that and some Texas toast... nice!! Maybe I'll come back and try one of their steaks, I just had the Hunters Chicken. Only turn off, all the tables have pictures of ice water sitting out before patrons arrive. See attached picture.

Overland Express serves a very decent lunch. I have not been there at dinnertime yet. We live close by but for the longest time we never considered eating there because our perception was that it was more of a bar. One day we decided to try it for lunch and were very pleasantly surprised. We LOVE their Reuben Sandwich. Every soup we have tried has been very very good. Salads are really good too. The decor is nice, the waitresses are friendly and give great service, the food arrives quickly which is great if you are on a lunch hour. They have quite a varied menu, but we stick to the soup/salad/sandwich every time we go. I will say that we had lunch there today and I ordered the french dip (which I have enjoyed immensely there previously) and the au jus was WAAY too salty. Like I almost died when I tasted it...but that has never occurred before, and they were really busy with big family groups (two days before Christmas) so I will treat that as a minor fluke this time! This restaurant is walking distance from Red Lion and Super 8 and even another hotel (Marriott?) so if you are visiting Helena and staying in one of these hotels, you should be OK walking over for a meal at the Overland Express.
