By far the best restaurant for overall variety. Louie and his wait staff have always been great to us. The burgers are awesome. I highly recommend the mushroom swiss burger and add blue cheese to it. The waffle fries are pretty good as well. But the wings are where they get set apart from any other restraunt. We ask for them to be cooked for 30 minutes and they come out perfect. Also the best blue cheese dressing in town.

I have a question. Why is an 8 week old baby a "liability" is a facility that serves food, is categorized as a restaurants and not a bad- at 11am on Sunday? Seriously? We were refused service and asked to leave because we have a 8 WEEK OLD BABY with us. I'm pretty sure he- who is exclusively nursing- wasn't interested in ordering a beer. I could see a limit on kids during evenings and nights- but brunch hour on a Sunday? All the times I've been here before, I've never once had good service. Drinks never get refilled. We never get sauces, Extra napkins, boxes- all because we never have a server check on us. To drive all the way out to the valley- it's not worth it. DONT go here.

It is what it is! Pretty good steak though was a little too done for me even though I asked for medium rare. Great local beer. Nice Montana Western like atmosphere.

The service was great. Always around when we need them. As for the food? I will drive back to town from the North Valley to eat elsewhere. We both tried different burgers. Nothing but bland and tasteless. The JoJos were undercooked. I can't bring myself to try a steak here if a simple burger is not up too par. Tried the fried platter also, just ordinary frozen stuff dumped in the oil. They need something to set them apart here. This was the third time in 5yrs that I have been here. I keep going back every so often hoping it gets better. Not happening so far. Sad, because it would be great to have a close restaurant to grab a beer and a burger. I guess with the old saying, the lipstick would be the new addition. The food and menu would be the pig.

Have tried this place several times for dinner, and each time I was not impressed with the quality of the food. Every time I'm there my food, especially the fries are always cold. Seriously how hard is it to get food out that's hot? My husband had a burger and said it was so dry he could hardly swallow it. The wait staff, especially on the bar side are good. As for the food save your money and drive into Helena, or Montana City.

Have heard some good things about Grub-Stake lately so decided to give it a try. The new addition to the site which includes a bar, dance floor, band area, TV's and seating has a nice feel and flow to it. We were told they have live music every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night. The main dining area needs some work. It was very hot and dingy when we had dinner and was so loud I had to yell at my husband to have a conversation. I ordered the fettuccine alfredo and was NOT impressed. My husband ordered the prime rib with baked potato and said it was very good. We both had drinks from the bar and those were well priced, about $4 for a beer and $3.50 for a mixed drink. The staff was fantastic, our waiter was very friendly and prompt, and the other staff at the bar, the host, and others were all cheerful and quick. The parking lot needs some work, it's a dirt lot which is fine but really had some deep potholes. Felt like I was 4-wheeling just to get in and out of the place. I left with mixed feelings about this place. They are always packed these days and I'm happy to see they are doing well. But also left feeling disappointed in my meal and trying not trip in a pothole on my way to the car. Keep working on it Grub-Stake, I'll be back to give you another try.

I live within a few minutes of Grub Stake and have experienced its food, service, and atmosphere countless times. With that said, I have resolved in the last year to drive further south into Helena for a real restaurant experience. Grub Stake is a great place to go if you are okay with a gritty, rustic bar feel and mediocre food. I have to say that their service staff are pretty good for the Helena area. But the lack of quality in the food and atmosphere lead my wife and I elsewhere. I was also disappointed in the half-hearted addition to the restaurant which leaves the customer wondering, "what are they going to do with this space?" Great bar, not so much a restaurant.

I was with a group of 5 and we had great service at the bar. I believe the bartenders name was Kellen? And he did a phenomenal job at keeping us happy. The food was good, pretty average. They had a live band and that was a nice addition to our evening. I would recommend going here, great service!

I hate to do this, but it is what it is. Decided to try their pizzas that they just started doing and they are stupid expensive ($16 for two toppings) and mediocre at best. If you're going to charge that kind of price for a pizza it better be damn good and this wasn't even close. The only reason this isn't a 1 star is because I usually like the place.

Best kept secret in Helena! In the land of giant steak, Grub-Stake is as good as it gets. Get Grade-A steak, giant portions, and friendly service without having to put on a shirt and tie. Great for a guys' night out or a relaxed, unassuming dinner destination. Loved it. Will be back, no question. By the way, the address is correct. Worth the short drive out of the city. Look for the red lights and cold beer. :)

Amazing Steak, some of the best I have had in Montana. Check it out, plus I live right next to it, and it has no review yet, so it gets 5 stars. Good Job Grub-Steak!
