Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Great food! I usually have the Cubano and/or the enchiladas Aztecas. Mild heat, not too spicy. I don't know what people are complaining about. The enchiladas take 5 minutes, they are made fresh every day, all they have to do is plate it. The Cubano does take a bit but that's because it is made when you order it, they don't just throw it in a microwave like fast food places. IT TAKES TIMES TO COOK GOOD FOOD! So if you want fast junk that resembles food go somewhere else, they only serve good food at Cielo!

If I lived in Helena, Cielo Cocina would become a habit. I knew I had chosen wish when the chips & salsa I ordered arrived and the chips were house made (obviously so - exactly like my husband's home made, and that is a GOOD thing). Carne asada taco was quite good, but the carnitas was fantastic! Small place - maybe 7 tables. Food cooked fresh to order. Friendly staff. Can't beat the prices! You'll be surprised at the meat in a $2.50 taco!

Real-deal Mexican home cooking. Excellent tacos, fresh horchata, delicious beans, perfect Cubano sandwich, ridiculous specials, and awesome breakfast options. If you are looking for greasy refried bean paste, flour tortillas, shredded iceberg lettuce, Pace "Picante" sauce from jar, and a coating of melted cheese product to go with your wine-based "margarita", look elsewhere. The Sysco minions would be happy to accommodate you at several other establishments around town that would be happy to fulfill your depraved and misinformed cravings. I recently had their special for the day: tamarind, balsamic, fig, and chipotle glazed pork tenderloin medallions with fresh sautéed snap peas over garlic rice. This ain't just a taco shop, folks, although they do a mean taco or two as well, and their salsas are fresh, picante, and bouncy.

This place is great and the line out the door at lunch is proof that Helena agrees. The shrimp tacos are great; well seasoned shrimp with a creamy sauce on cabbage. One of my favorite meals. Some of the other tacos were a little unremarkable, like the carne asada was a bit bland. I was excited about the poblano pepper veggie tacos but they came across a bit flavorless. Perhaps some alteration of the seasoning would help. The place is nice and clean although I see employees going back and forth from handling cash and cards to handling food in the kitchen, which is bad for both efficiency and hygiene. Overall, though, this place is a great option for lunch on last chance. Update: The business has replied to my review and indicated that they have instituted strict handwashing policies in addition to informing their employees of the review. I appreciate their responsiveness and I'll be sure to come back.

Local gem. Great tacos. Awesome breakfast burrito (Saturday). They make everything to order which results in great quality food. Unfortunately, because they are very popular, it usually means a bit of a wait. If you are in a hurry, this is not the place to go to grab a quick lunch. There is no parking lot, so plan on navigating downtown parking either on the street or in a city lot. You can get take out or they have a few tables and a counter. I really like this little place: it's cute, the food is consistently flavorful and good, and the staff is friendly. I go either before or after the peak lunch hours to try to avoid a long wait.

Update- After I left a less than stellar review, the owner tweeted a response. Her response? "A-hole "Yelpers" can suck my balls! #nojoke #getalike #hopeyougetfoodpoisoning" I'll let this speak for itself. All I can say is that you REALLY are better off going elsewhere. I want to like this place. I really do. Helena certainly needs new food options. Unfortunately, Cielo is a disappointment. The service is incredibly slow. We waited 20 minutes for our sandwiches both times we visited. The pork in the cubano was low quality. This place has a lot of potential, but I don't see it improving soon. Save your money (and a lot of time) and go somewhere else.

Really delicious, fresh, authentic food. A few good veggie options, great beans and rice. Good service despite how busy they were during a weekday lunch rush. Definitely going back. I wish they were open for dinner!
(4)Bob M.
Ate there once me and my daughter paid $19 dollars for very little food. My daughter had the pork quesadilla pork tasted ok. But very little meat. I had the carnitas they were good but disappointed they were out if rice and beans. I did like the salsa. But the owner was kinda rude when I asked about the rice and beans. I would kinda expect more from someone who was a ruuner up on the food network show. I should of had the Cuban I hear it's good.

This place is definitely the best choice for Mexican food in Helena. The Cubano was amazing-nice and crispy on the outside and cooked perfectly inside. The Carne Asada tacos were also pretty good. The only downside is that when we tried to order the Enchiladas Aztecas they were out. No big deal, I think those are a hot menu item. Then we tried for some guacamole, and they were out of that too. They were also out of pork for Carnitas. This definitely won't stop me from returning though! Can't wait to try the breakfast options!
(4)Rick A.
Always busy and always worth the wait! Cielo takes a fresh approach to Mexican. The Enchiladas Aztecas are my favorite. Don't forget to ask for the Nasty Hot green sauce. It's apparent that this is a family restaurant. The recipes should be closely guarded generational secrets. Don't be surprised to place your order with a very capable daughter or son of the owners. They are all in it with a real passion for the food they serve. The only downside? Not open Mondays and only open from mid-morning through mid-afternoon. One of my favorites all the same!
(5)Mike N.
The food was excellent, the service was fantastic, the staff was very friendly and accommodating and the prices were great. What a fantastic spot! This was my first visit to Cielo Cocina, but I'll definitely be coming back the next time I'm in Helena. I highly recommend this spot!
(5)John H.
Had the special today for breakfast: Chorizo and potatoes with peppers and fried eggs on top. Fantastic! Easily the best breakfast I've had in Helena. Better than any of the other popular places in town, such as Steve's. I only wish it was a little easier to tell if they are open; we couldn't tell until we had almost walked in.
(5)Frederick S.
We've been here at least a dozen times and each time has been incredible. It must be good if my three year old asks for it! Great service and the best homemade dishes, what's not to love?
(5)Daniel T.
One of my favorite lunch spots in Helena. The tacos are very good. I have had all the different types they have and have never been disappointed. The chips, salsa and guacamole are also very good. I have not had anything else on the menu but my friends have gotten about everything else and always like what they get. The only problems with this place are that it is not open long enough hours, only (lunch hours: tue-sat) and it is very small, so it can be hard to find somewhere to sit.
(4)Sarah M.
Holy cowabunga that was delicious! I had the enchiladas aztecas and it was off the chain. The sauce they put on top would make shoe leather taste good. Friendly service to boot. If I'm up this way, I'll definitely come back.
(5)Carolyn S.
Absolutely amazing! Go before or after the regular noon rush, but you will not be disappointed! The shrimp tacos are my favorite!
(5)Stephanie K.
Who wrote those other reviews? Were we at the smae place? Small children were running in and out of the kitchen area. The woman who took our order went to the kitchen, and started prepping food, without washing her hands. I got the food, and by this time was so grossed out, I had no desire to eat. Lackluster tacos. I have had better at Taco Bell.
(1)Michelle C.
The food here is always super fresh, authentic, and delicious. The prices are a bit high though. $4.50 for one small corn tortilla taco? Absurd, there should be 2 for that price. Also would have been nice to know the quantity since my order was to go and I was hungry after the one small taco included in the order.
(4)Jack O.
Poor service the food is ok the hours they are open makes it difficult to get in but that's ok your not missing much
(1)Breezy C.
The breakfast burritos are to die for!
(5)Sarah S.
It's always so hard for me to get there on time, but when I do, it's always great. Their food is always so good. They're quick and inexpensive, which is another bonus. Their chipotle mayo is to die for.
(4)Kate M.
Stopped in here on a whim. Food is fantastic and AUTHENTIC! The chips are incredible and the fresh guacamole is a must. it is the best i have ever had. I got the Shrimp taco which was good but the carnitas taco was soooo yummy and now i am craving it all the time and unfortunately i don't live in Helena. I love the presentation and how it is all put together - very authentic. I am looking forward when i am back in Helena to revisit and try more of the items on the menu. My co-workers had the tortilla soup and said it was incredible... it looked delicious. I heard the owner traveled and cooked in Mexico and Cuba - not sure that is true but the chef was definitely influenced by these cultures and their cuisine. Bravo Cielo...good luck to you and looking forward to seeing you again soon.
(4)Jillian S.
Pretty decent cubanos! I should have taken the initiative to opt out of the garlic aioli (not something that belongs on a cubano) and double up on yellow mustard and pickles to make it a little more authentic. Alas! Next time. With a side of platanos.
(4)RJ D.
Good food and a very friendly staff, looking forward to coming back as I may upgrade this review to 5 stars, I'm on the fence currently.
(4)Fred G.
Check out any of the breakfast options on Saturday morning - incredible.
(4)Ashley K.
Absolutely wonderful and authentic Mexican food!!! But not just wonderful food but amazing customer service! Love that each order is made fresh and great location! A must have if in the mood for Mexican!
(5)Sarah H.
The longest my husband and I can go without stopping by Cielo for a Mexican fix is two weeks, although weekly visits are not uncommon. This little joint is not only the best Mexican restaurant in Helena (by leaps and bounds), it is one of the best restaurants of any kind in Helena. With the exception of the quesadillas, we've tried everything on the menu, and more than once. One of the highlights is the breakfast burrito with Cielo's homemade chorizo and what I'm pretty sure is a little bit of nutmeg (but it seems like something narcotic the way I crave it.) The chicken tortilla soup is STUFFED with chunks of chicken, black beans, their homemade tortilla chips and guacamole, and the most flavorful just-salty-enough broth. And the poblanos fritos: strips of poblano peppers coated in a thick cornmeal batter and fried. C'mon. That's genius.
(5)Lacey D.
Tasty, fresh food. It is evident that everything is made in-house and to order. The prices are very reasonable; you can get a filling lunch for around 6 bucks. The cubano sandwich and the shrimp tacos are my favorites. I usually get to-go orders as there is limited seating, especially during the colder months.
(4)Victoria T.
I have been DYING for authentic mexican food since I moved to Helena from California...Cielo filled that void! The food is amazing (I recommend the veggie tacos, the chipotle sauce is to DIE for) and the owners are so friendly! Only downside is that sometimes it can take awhile during the lunch rush but hey, if you want fresh food thats the price you pay!
(5)Kesha Z.
Went here last week for lunch at 2:30 and when I walked in the employee said I'm sorry we don't have any food.... Wtf?!?! I said well do you have the ingredients to make the Torta and she said well we could make it but I couldn't put anything on it to which I replied well then I guess you can't make it can you? What's wrong with this place? Maybe it's a Helena thing.
(1)KayJay V.
What can I say? Awesome food, great people and my favorite place for lunch in Helena. Yea, it's small and there's not much seating, so get it to go if that's the issue. It's worth it, I promise. Saturday they do breakfast burritos and holy cow.....amazing!!! There's nothing on the menu I don't like. Gluten free corn tortillas and vegetarian options. Go!!!!
(5)Wayne G.
Just moved here from Washington DC and stumbled onto Cielo walking around the area. Had the breakfast burrito. What can I say.....it was delicious, the flavors were well balanced and my taste buds exploded. The owner was very friendly and you could tell was enjoying what he did for a living. I also had the basket of chips served with salsa. The homemade chips and salsa were also tasty. Looking forward to trying other items on the menu.
(5)Armando O.
Cielo you are doing everything right! You are not alienating anyone! The passion and love that goes into your food and business are very evident! Keep it up!
(5)Mark P.
An oasis of good Mexican food in Helena. Not the massive portions/full entrees you might get at a standard Mexican place, just expertly prepared food with a good balance of flavors. The options are more expansive than Chilangos, which was also very good but more of an "ala carte" taco place. The breakfast can't be beat- it is only available on Saturdays, but some of the entrees (such as Huevos Aztecas) are available at all times.
(5)Rob K.
Ate here yesterday while on business trip to Helena. As all of my experiences in Montana with Mexican food, it was terrible. If you know what mexican food tastes like, don't eat it Montana. Would not go back, the chips were like chewing on leather and the "chicken" enchiladas were void of chicken and flavor.
(1)Jason W.
Great food, great location and even better owners! So glad they are here in Helena!
(5)Elsa Z.
I love this restaurant. The food is consistently delicious, and very affordable! As a California transplant, this is absolutely the best mexican food Helena has to offer. The menu is big enough for some variety between meals, but not so large that it is overwhelming. My favorite item has to be the carne asada torta, but I'm equally infatuated with the enchiladas aztecas, all variations of tacos, and the quesadilla. Their chips are to die for too! Homemade and served with delicious salsa and a chipotle sauce. The owner and employees are wonderful. They're always exceedingly friendly and quick! The service is great, even at noon when it's standing room only. Every time we're in there, they're smiling and laughing and talking to their customers. Just really nice people. I do suggest going in right after they open, because this place fills up quick, and it can be tough to get a table! On a couple of occasions when we've come in at 2:00, they've been out of carne asada or enchiladas. Not a big deal to us (we really do like everything on the menu), but they still apologized profusely and gave us a huge thing of guacamole for free! If you haven't been in there yet, definitely give it a try. My only request is that they stay open longer! We'd be in a lot more if they were open for dinner!
(5)Sarah K.
My husband and I went there for lunch. Awesome food. We had the Enchiladas Aztecas and the Cubano sandwich. So good. It is some of the best food we have had in a long time. Wonderful salsas, delicious sauces. The sandwich was very nice and crunchy on the outside and the meats inside were so moist and flavorful. The enchiladas were amazing. Full of meat and covered in a wonderful sauce. Prices were great. The staff was helpful and friendly.
(5)Brad R.
Excellent. The tacos are served with two small corn tortillas, but I prefer to eat them wrapped in only one. The flavors come through better in the single wrap. Fast, friendly, local, fresh food. What more do you need?
(5)J A.
Excellent, affordable, fresh, friendly, and best of all, authentic Mexican food. Let's hope Cielo Cocina succeeds where Chilangos failed. But with better prices, bigger portions, more options and a welcoming, family oriented atmosphere, I think the only thing the owners of Cielo Cocina are going to have to worry about any time soon is finding a bigger location to accommodate the crowds once word gets out.
(5)Taron K.
Great food, ordered their enchiladas, which I don't like, just awesome!
(5)Erin H.
Loved the enchiladas and the service was good. A few young kids helping out. It is a small place so you may have to wait for a seat or get it to go.
(3)Travis b.
I eat here weekly and have yet to have anything that wasn't stellar. My fav are the pork taco's with a side of black beans and rice (add onion and cilantro). Their breakfast burritos are to die for but only available on Sundays. Only downside to Cielo's is that it can be PACKED between 11:30am-1:30pm. Still worth it though.
(5)Nicholas H.
The food is pretty good here, but I have had a bad customer service experience that is not consistent with the other reviews here. On a busy Saturday, we popped in for some tacos. We took our seats and waited. We began to notice that many customers after us had received their orders. I went to the waitress at the counter and received a curt "it's coming" (without checking to see if something was amiss). After another fifteen minutes, this same waitress came to our table to ask what we ordered. No apology. After yet another ten minutes and several orders later, I again went to inquire about our food. This time, I was treated with insolence. The food arrived after a 30 minute wait. We received no apology and no acknowledgement that our order had been delayed. People forget orders, I get that. In this case, it was how they handled the delay that will prevent me from returning anytime soon.
(2)Tyson M.
Cielo is outstanding and inexpensive! The whole menu is great! Best lunch spot downtown.
(5)Robin B.
Wow.....what a delicious surprise in a tiny package. In my opinion, the best mexi food in Helena. Will go back often!
(5)Anthony H.
It's been a long time coming in Helena, and where Chilangos tried, and ultimately failed, Cielo Cocina is poised to dominate. There has been a dearth of authentic Mexican food in Helena for a long, long time. Yes, there are other restaurants in town that serve average south of the border faire, but they simply cannot compete with the level of style, freshness and downright honesty you get at Cielos. Everything, you heard it, everything, is fresh, and the flavors are simply amazing. If this review seems overly positive that's because it is, unabashedly. The state of mediocre food in Helena is one step closer to being a thing of the past with Cielos in town. The owners and staff are a joy to be around and the atmosphere is downright comfortable. They've really made the space their own. Oh, and they deliver! So do yourself a favor and support an awesome local business in Helena. Go taste a little bit of what heaven's kitchen has to offer at Cielo Cocina.
