This place really, really has to grow on you. When I first visited years ago, I thought it was complete trash. The tacos were bland, the little tiny portion of chips and salsa they bring out were inadequate and the pricing was above the quality, it seemed. However, my wife's family loves this place and we go there nearly every time we are in town. Over time, my palate has grown accustomed to the point where I now enjoy our trips to El Comedor. It's all about knowing what to order and what to expect. Not a place to try if you're in town for one night, but if you go multiple times, you'll eventually figure out how and what to order to enjoy a meal.

Yikes. I would probably avoid this place. The servers & waitstaff were very unprofessional. Almost dirty & yucky. The tables are all very close together and there is no space/privacy. We COULD NOT get water to save our lives & the food coming out was slow. I had a "fluffy" which had been RAVED about...and it was pretty mediocre. Not worth coming back to this place.

Authentic Mexican food??? Ha! Just another stupid Montana scam. If you are looking for the worst fake Mexican food on the planet, with a side of instant diarrhea, at a ridiculous price, with completely ignorant service, then this is your place. Tried to offer some suggestions on how to make it better, but the hillbilly, NOT MEXICAN, NOT AUTHENTIC, staff and ownership apparently think that everything is AOK. This is not anywhere near okay and I wanted to spit out the very first bite. This was the most absolutely disgustingly rotten food I have ever encountered, and I was instantly sickened. They knew I was completely unhappy with my meal, which I could not even half finish, but they charged me full price anyway. I think the elderly must only eat here just so they can finally have a bowel movement at last. Avoid this place at all cost for your own sake.

Arguably the worst "mexican" food I have ever tasted. We knew we should have turned around when we walked in the door and smelled air freshener over what should have been glorious Mexican spices. The service was poor and the best thing on the table was my daughter's frozen tater tots. Stale chips with canned, weak salsa should have tipped us off as well but we plunged on to receive our horribly seasoned, dry food covered in large quantities of cheese. My kids wouldn't touch it and the adults choked down about a third before we left still hungry because we just couldn't stand to take one more bite. Montana just doesn't know what Mexican food is. Excuse me while I move back to nevada.

Worst Mexican food I ever ate. No shredded beef. Chile rellano was deep fried with something. Ground beef tasted like corned beef. Tiny bowl of stale chips. Salsa came out of a can . the ice water was epic.

My son and I are new to GF'S and we were craving Mexican food. After driving around town we finally decided on here......and wow.....do I regret it. This was by far the worst mexican food I have had in my life. How can you go wrong with a 'fluffy' taco? Really???!!! The beef reminded me of what canned dog food smells like. One bite and I was done! Well, at least I know not to waste my time or money with this place. :-(

Not bad Mexican food for Montana.

Worst place ever! Don't know how people can consider this place Mexican food! Ate there once 2 years ago and never again!

Had the two choice dinner with a tamale and enchilada it was very good. The meal came with refried beans and Mexican rice which were also good. The food was served piping hot. Service was quick and friendly. The restaurant itself is brightly lit and nicely set up. The only disappointment was dessert. The refried ice cream was disappointing with the shell of the ice cream being almost like chewing gum.

I should have known that something was up when we walked in the door and the people eating there were all old as the hills. The food was what I imagine that "taco wednesdays" is like at a retirement home. It was incredibly bland and cooked beyond recognition. The line between "food" and "food product" was blurred beyond distinction. For some reason, my enchiladas came with a side salad, and not even a salad that made some sad attempt at appearing "ethnic" by adding in tortilla chips or some kinda misused spice. Just an iceberg lettuce salad. Also, it turned out that when the waitress said that their options were "ranch, blue cheese, vinaigrette and Italian" what she actually meant was "ranch, blue cheese vinaigrette and Italian." "Blue cheese vinaigrette" makes as much sense in practice as it does conceptually, which is to say NONE. Maybe the lunch specials are just really bad because that's when the blue hairs come in to eat? I don't know but I won't be going back the next time I'm in Great Falls.

Such a good time. A friend and I split the fajitas for 2 and got shrimp and chicken with a Pacifico. Great quality good with solid seasoning. Def going back. Yum

This is as bad as Mexican Food gets. I ordered a side of vegetables and it was floating in fake butter. My whole family went with me. Even my younger kids thought it was awful. None of us finished our plates. I know a lot of the locals like this place but trust me, it's is not good.

This was the worst meal at a Mexican restaurant I've ever had....I should have known the rest of the meal would be bad when even the tortilla chips they served before the meal came were stale! I had the shrimp fajita, and the shrimp tasted like they were half rotten. There were hardly any grilled peppers, mostly onions. The guacamole was brown on the surface. The decor needs a major update, as it is lost in the early-90's. I have nothing good to say about the experience. And they were not cheap...Save your money...go to TJ's!

I like the fluffy shell tacos. My boyfriend is absolutely obsessed with this place.

I was craving Mexican food while we were in Great Falls, and what we ate at El Comedor was not really Mexican food. However, it was okay tasting food. I don't think I'd go out of my way to eat here again, but if I lived in Great Falls I wouldn't mind going on occasion. I got the fluffy taco and the Fat Alberto. The fluffy taco was just taco fixings on a tortilla that had been heated until it puffed, and the Fat Alberto reminded me of a fried Navajo taco. I did really like the chips and salsa. They tasted especially good combined with the refried beans. The place did look like it had been very busy and no one had had time to clean up. That didn't bother us though, and the service was good.

This place is about as Mexican as the staff...and by that I mean not at all. I was appalled at the quality of food. I have eaten better tasting dirt. The guacamole was the texture of mayonnaise and tasted like it was made with it as well. I had their "world famous" fat alberto. It looked like something my dog threw up and the meat was probably the same quality as his dog food. I was sharing it with my two year old and after two bites I asked her if she wanted more and she shook her head no. My 9 year old ate a few bites of her food and pronounced she was stuffed (which was her polite way of getting out of eating nasty food). The decor was extremely dated I doubt it has ever been updated. The menus showed an extreme amount of wear as well which I always find gross; I felt like I needed to use hand sanitizer after touching it. To top the evening off my 9 year old vomited all over our driveway when we got home. Needless to say we will not be coming back. We had high hopes considering our only other Mexican options in GF are major chains and fast food.

Not being a local, I asked someone that worked at a nearby retail store by the hotel I was staing at where the good places in Great Falls to eat were. They named a few places, and one of them was El Comedor. They said if I went there, that I should try the "fluffy Taco" I headed to EC with the fam. for lunch and to my surprise this place was busy. The parking lot outside itself didn't seem busy, but once you stepped inside it was a beehive of activity. I have to say the restaurant itself from the outside isn't much to look at. The inside as well leaves little to be desired. No offence, Great Falls but you guys don't get out much. The inside was a little dirty, at least where we were sitting (Take a right after you get in the door, then by the bar turn right again then your sitting in a little cubbie hole) back to the front of the restaurant. The ledge by the window had cheese on it, and the windows looked like they were never cleaned. They start you off with nacho chips and salsa, which were pretty good. Then we ordered the "fluffy tacos" everybody seemed to be talking about . You get rice and beans with your tacos, and the portions are more than adequate. Oh yeah you get two Fluffy taco's with your order which consist of your choice of chicken or beef. You may be asking at this point, what makes these things "fluffy". Well the taco's aren't of the hardshell variety, nor are they soft shell tortilla's. They are more of a bread like doughy mixture yellow in color. I should've taken a picture, maybe someone else will. in concluding my review. Maybe for Greatfalls standards this is a good place for mexican fair, but I rate it mediocre at best. Oh yeah, I ordered chocolate milk for my 3 year old and when it came out it was white milk with quik in it. The quik wasn't even properly stirred. Oh well, whatever just wanted to add that. Don't order the cho. milk unless you want faux choc. milk.

Decent food, especially for Great Falls; but as far as Mexican food goes, it's not the best. I don't think I'll be back.

Not the greatest Mexican I had. Service was borderline. Got seated by a guy wearing a dew rag on his head.

OUTSTANDING food! The best Mexican food I have ever had. My family has been going there for 3 decades now. The fluffy tacos have the best flavor of any place I have ever been to. I drive from Nevada to eat there!

We were pleasantly surprised by this place. No Lard. Good flavor. I loved the fluffy taco. I will be back!

This is by far the closest thing you will get to authentic Mexican food in Great Falls. The interior decor is a little drab, but the enchiladas, fluffy tacos and cheese crisps will keep you coming back. I have eaten here close to 20 times and the service is usually very good. In addition, the price is quite reasonable.

We walked in at 2:00 in the afternoon on a Friday and the place was almost full. While this impressed us, it should always tip you off about the authenticity of the restaurant when there is not one Mexican eating or working in the place and all the servers are little old white ladies. The chips and salsa were good. The salsa was nice and chunky. It was much better than the typical tomato paste salsa you get. It was more like Pico de galo. The only problem was the tiny bowl the nachos came in. Another order was only $2.00 but we passed. The tossed salad came right out of a bag but I mixed the ranch dressing with the salsa and made a delicious dressing. My wife tried the blue cheese vinaigrette and really liked it. The guacamole was ok, I actually didn't mind it but my wife (who loves guacamole) didn't care for it. The battered, deep fried and grilled Anaheim pepper with cheese inside was pretty good once you added a splash of salsa but it was kind of plain on its own. The tamale wrapped in a corn husk was terrible. My wife ate a few more bites of it but one bite was plenty for me. The carne asada was not carne asada. It was fried meat. No flavor at all and only made bearable smothered in salsa and salt. We were really disappointed. The obviously home made hot sauce that was on every table was nice but other than that and the salsa, every thing was right out of a can or the frozen isle. Skip this place.

Wow. This place has gone way downhill. Don't order the Lolita - billed as a chicken dish, but arrives without the chicken. Chips and salsa? Included, with a ration of about 2 chips per person. Indifferent wait staff. Want good Mexican? Taco Treat doesn't disapppoint.

The chips and salsa and the sopapillas were the best part of the meal. I ordered the chicken salad and my meat was very salty. It tasted like it was cooked previously and reheated.

Surprisingly not to great. While edible, every portion of the fajitas tasted like they had just come out of a can.

I have not been here in years, but it's some of the best Mexican food I've ever had, and I live in California, and have been to Mexico several times. It's unusual. Their tacos are great, in a lightly fried soft taco shell, and definitely get the Fat Alberto-seasoned ground beef on the same type of shell but flat like a tostada. Just writing about it makes me hungry! I think I might have to make my family take an unnecessary trip up to Great Falls, just to go get something to eat the next time I'm home.

It is NOT authentic Mexican, but the food is great. The fluffy taco is something unique I've never found anywhere else, and certainly something you should try!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
