I am from AZ, up here on business. I am here for 2 weeks, and of course I asked where good places to eat were. I was reccomended many places so I figured I would try all of them. On the third day I decided to eat at Joe's. I saw it on MAN vs FOOD so I thought it had to be good.... Well I was wrong. I ordered the Pasty with chili and cheese and a Moose Drool beer. The Pasty was extremely dry and lacking flavor, even the chili was not even able to moisten the dry pasty, it actually scratched my throat to the point of blood. Ok now for the bottled beer. It was very tasty but... the bottle it came in was nasty. after I drank about 1/2 the bottle I noticed black spots on the label it appared to be mold yes mold, I took a napkin and wipe the mouth of the bottle, I looked at the napkin to find black smears all over it. Yea I know... nasty. the bottle looked like it was the last beer sitting in a bottom of a cooler that had water in it for over a month. Well I am done my rant, My server was very polite and prompt, So I did not Jip her out of a tip. this is just my 100% truthfull experience I gain nor lose nothing from my review. Anyways judge for yourself, but I warned you! : )

If you go to Montana I've been told that you need to experience a pasty. As my husband and I have never eaten one before we made sure to stop by this shop. We ordered and it seemed like our food came out in 4 minutes. I was shocked by how fast we were served. The prices were very cheap and the food was plain but very good. Just like what the miners ate back in the day.

If you're in Butte and looking for some local fare, give Joe's a try and order the traditional pasty with gravy. It's sort of like a pot pie that's made into a ball and rolled up in the dough then baked and doused in gravy. The bulk of it is made of meat, potatoes and a few onions and it's pretty tasty... and filling! Upon arrival, it looks like they put too much gravy on it, but it's not... just roll with it. The pasty needs gravy to counter the dryness inside. The menu is printed on a placemat with the history of the pasty on it as well... which I appreciate and find to be interesting. The place itself is pretty dive-y, but worth it for a true taste of Butte. I doubt I'd venture into other parts of the menu and get anything else. My boyfriend tried the chili pasty and prefers the gravy to the chili, FYI. If we're passing through Butte and in need of food, I'm sure we'll stop for another pasty.

Hit another Man vs Food spot. The previous Yelper wasn't quite correct, Joe's is definitely open, what they probably saw was the sign. The owners are retiring soon and the business is for sale. But for now still open and as good as ever!!! I just hope new owners can come in and keep this recipe and business going.

Some of the best pasties in Montana. Makes for a hearty "miner -like" meal. No wonder they were so popular. Love the chili cheese pasty.

Fantastic! The pasty chef is a wonderfully sweet lady who is the best pasty chef this side of Cornwall.

Do you remember the dog food they used to market called Gravy Train? It was basically that in a hard shell. I really have to give props to the service though. The girls working there were very friendly and attentive, but I could have had the same culinary experience with a stale tortilla and a can of Alpo.

Pasty is simple home grown comfort food. I recommend gravy on the side with a beer. We did not like the coleslaw, it did taste a little strange, and my childs tuna melt was cold. The reaon for the 4 stars is the pasty.

Last weekend at Joe's was my first time having a pasty, so I suppose I don't have much basis for comparison! Our group hit the Shop for breakfast, and three of us had plain pasties while I got one doused in gravy. It was a tasty, hearty meal--I can see how it kept the miners full! My friends thought their pasties were a bit dry (I didn't have that criticism given the gravy application) but we were all glad to have checked out this important part of Butte cuisine.

First time in Butte so I wanted some local grub. I ordered the chili pasty and the pasty with gravy but that was way too much for one person because the pasty is pretty big! The crust is flaky and the meat is tender with the potato that have such mild flavor, I definitely will order them again the next time I am in town. I have to say that it tasted better with some sauce on it because it is a bit on the dry side without any sauce.

Me, my wife and kids stopped by there on our way to Flathead Lake. Saw it on Man vs. Food. So very let down. Apparently a Pasty is what the miners used to eat..apparently because they're the only one with tools that could break through this thing. Hard as a rock, no flavor. Service was great though. I'll pass on the pasty next time.

The wife and I were visiting Butte, an old hometown if mine for a year and a half (1951-52). We had to sample Joe's Pasty Shop's choice products. I went in the late morning and told the kind lady behind the counter that this Yooper wanted to purchase 2 steaming hot beef pasties to go. She asked if I wanted gravy with them. I told her no thank you. She asked what was a Yooper? I countered with,a person from Michigan's Upper Peninsula. I told her my Father had been a miner and had moved here to work in the mines. Pasties are a way of life for us Yoopers. She asked me if I wanted ketchup in the white paper sack that was heavy with the hotties. I said yes and left the shop with my 2 crusty treasures. I put them in the backseat and told the wife we would consume them over near Bozeman later in the day as we traveled East on I-90. Well, that didn't happen, The aroma of the pasties took over and by time we 20 or 25 miles out of town up over Pipestone Pass we stopped at rest area wildly tore open the sack and started to eat the huge beauties as we resumed our journey. The wife says my pasties have a lighter crust but I personally didn't mind Joe's. Mounds of potato and flank steak with a bit onion make Joe's the PERFECT PASTY. No rutabaga to be found. Joe must not be Scandinavian but pure Cousin Jack.the glorious filling had a definite peppery taste and and the crust was somewhat dark golden and flakey. To good to be true. I don't go through Butte often but you can be sure that I will always stop for Joes pasties. I think I would venture a taste of the most expensive pasty Joe's offers in the future. (the chili pasty) but it would be difficult, having eaten a beef pasty or two. The venue Joe keeps is larger than most shops that We have visited on our WILD WEST TOUR this Summer, in search of the elusive Cornish Pasty. Cornwall, England here we come

Awesome spot in Butte. Killer time warp into the guts of Montana's funkiest town. Pasties are amazing, I could slurp the gravy with a spoon. Staff is terrific as well.

    A butte classic. Can't go wrong with a pastee. They are huge. Average price! Feeds a lot. And don't forget your ketchup and gravey and your set to go(;

I was passing thru Butte and being a fan of Man v. Food, I decided to stop by Joe's pasty shop. The pasty had a bit too much pepper for most people but I enjoyed having a bit of gravy on mine. The staff is very friendly and used to man v. food fans stopping by. I got the blueberry flavored ice tea but there was way too much blueberry syrup.

When you're in butte, you have to have a pasty and Joe's made a very tasty classic pasty with brown gravy. To top it off the people were exceptionally nice! They even wrapped us up a couple pasties to go to eat later back at our hotel.

I took Adam Richman's suggestion and had the pasty with chili, onions, and cheese. A stand alone pasty is a little dry, so this helped. It's not a greatly filling meal, but it'll stop your hunger. Small little diner like setting. If you're stopping through, well worth a stop.

Great pasty's one of the best places in butte to grab a pasty. Good service highly recommend the chili and cheese pasty.

We had not been to Butte for 25 years, but found ourselves there at lunch. Of course, our stop was at Joe's Pasty Shop. Pasties were the filling meal that miners took with them every morning a they went down into the mines. They were hot and filling giving them energy to mine the copper. Joe's pasties are the best. The crust is flakey and the meat & potatoes are tender and flavorful. We had ours covered with the brown gravy. Now keep in mind, if you are on a diet this isn't the place to go, although, after one pasty you won't have to eat again that day! Like the miners before us, they fill you up and leave you feeling warm and cozy.

A+ for service and a great experience... I just really don't think pasties are my thing! They are sort of weird and bland. I just moved to Butte, and I read that Man vs. Food came to this particular location, so we felt that we should check it out. After the fact, people at work later told me that there are better pasties at other restaurants in town...?

Joe's Pasty Shop is a true Montanan delight. This is the real deal. For around seven dollars you get an enormous handmade beef pasty with gravy and a cup of refillable coffee. It's all served on a real plates and real cups. Real coffee cream is served with coffee. You can grab a shot of liquor. You can gamble on an old keno machine. The whole experience is awesome, gritty, and authentic. Don't pass this up while it's here.

I actually thought they were hyped up so much that I was a bit disappointed. I prefer Lisa's Pasty Pantry in Missoula.

Was good, got the plain pasty with gravy. Was tasty but very filling (talk about starch with bread and potatoes... whew!) Will definitely fill you up but not a place I would eat more than special occasions, I could feel it sitting in my stomach all day......lol

Pasty's are a Montana tradition in mining country having been brought here by the Welsh and Cornish miners. They are a thick pastry shell filled with meat and potatoes. Although they are plain, simple food they are tasty and make for an inexpensive lunch. I'm not sure I'll go back for another one, but it is definitely part of the local heritage and worth experiencing. Our server suggested getting ours with gravy, since they can be a bit dry; that was a good suggestion.

My husband and I drove all the way from Oregon to eat at this place. Ok, so we were coming anyway, but had to try a pasty from Joe's. We both ordered the pasty with chili and cheese. It was burnt on the bottom and very dry. The meat inside was good, but it lacked flavor. We were disappointed.

This may be a "must stop" for sentimental reasons, but the actual pasty itself was sort've a letdown. I am a huge fan of meat pastries of nearly any sort (meat pies, empanadas, samosas) and a major fan of english/cornish pasties. The pasty I had at Joe's just wasn't that good. Not much flavor to the pie itself and gravy was the "looks like it came out of a can even if maybe it didn't" brown. The whole food experience just wasn't worth it. I wouldn't bother making the detour unless you have sentimental reasons to go - this is a regional foodstuff you can probably write off if this is representative.

I ordered the appetizer pastys to take home and they were tasty! I warmed them up in the microwave for a few minutes. If they are a bit dry, add gravy. Note: they make them fresh every morning so when they are out....they are out until the following day.

I ate here years ago when I was passing through town. I am pretty sure this is the place. If it is, then it was AMAZING! It was so tasty, that I remember pasties to this day. I want to stop in Butte again someday so that I may taste this pastry-beefy goodness once more!!

Very hometown coffee shop feel. They're serving up quick, delicious pasty's. Worth the visit for a quick bite of something new for lunch. Nice.

How can I say it? You have got to go have a pasty at Joe's. There's no two ways about this. They have been there forever and there is a reason. They still make pasties the same old way. They aren't available anywhere else! Some people say you can get them on the UP in Michigan but I've never been. You can have your pasty with gravy if you like, or with ketchup. But you've got to have one. It is big, crusty and full of beef and potatoes. Supposedly miners ate them by hand, but you'll want a fork. They have cute little appetizer pasties you can get to go, for the unlucky folks at the end of your road trip who can't eat a pasty with you when you're in Butte. Their luck will improve once you arrive with the goods!
