French toast + hash were very good and the portions were sizable for the price paid. Servers were friends and the atmosphere + decoration is worth checking out even if you are not hungry!

The Western was a main stay for years but then it sorta slid a bit. That was before Susan took it over and made it better than ever!!! She cleaned and scrubbed, but kept a Bozeman legend what it always use to be and still is, a "GREAT" place for breakfast and lunch. For an absolutely heart stopping experience (literally), treat yourself to the biscuits and gravy with sausage patty and 2 eggs...YUMMM!!

This is painful for me. I love the Western, always have. Unfortunately I am a creature of habit and just keep ordering the corned beef breakfast. I keep hoping they just didn't click that particular day. Now I just don't know. It wasn't good. May or may not have been canned. Everything else I have had there is fantastic, just stay away from the corned beef. bummer.

My brother has lived in Bozeman for over 30 years aand is a morning regular at the Western. No visit is complete without at least one trip to the Western for breakfast. The cinnamon rolls are the best and the hospitality comes in a close second. On our most recent trip to Bozeman, we had two of our grandsons with us. The boys ordered breakfasts and my husband and I had cinnamon rolls. When we went back 3 days later and happened to have the same waitress, she remembered everything we had all ordered! That's customer service in my book! The owner stopped at our table on both visits and made recommendations of things to do and asked where we were from, etc. A real down-home kind of restaurant!

Best biscuits and gravy in town!
(5)Matthew F.
My god I love the Western. Great food. Perfect atmosphere. All the coffee you can drink. Don't ever change.
(5)Robert S.
Western Cafe offers a great menu choice, and make you feel right at home with their friendly service.

Wow! I can't believe I'm the first to review the Western Cafe. I guess it does not attract the usual yelper. The Western is a place you know is good because of the wear marks on the formica in front of the counter stools (one spot per forearm). It has been around FOREVER and doesn't have any modern feature about it. I read somewhere else they don't like you plugging in your MacBook there, and they don't have wifi. They don't need it. Go to the Western in the morning for the cinnamon rolls. Find out what time they come out of the oven and get there at that time. Go to the Western in the afternoon for pie. My favorite is Sour Cream Raisin. No one else even knows what that is. Find out what time they come out of the oven and go, or you will not get the kind you want. I hope they never get wifi.

This is the best hangover food ever!!! the cinnamon rolls are HUGE!!! the breakfast if PERFECT!!! portions are great! the coffee is great! this place needs to be around forever!
(5)Butch K.
This place is great Perfect staff Amazing food And did I forget to say it's all home made The owner is in here making sure it is a perfect experience And Amy is from MI and a friend
(5)Kevin R.
Tons of charm. This is the type of place you want to find when you want something that feels real/local. Great food, incredibly wonderful, friendly, ass kicking attentive staff. Portion of food was much bigger than I anticipated, never a bad thing. Had to park a decent hike away though, as the downtown was super busy that morning, around 9:30am. All in all, great diner style place that makes me proud to live in America and happy to visit the great state of Montana!
(4)Pete B.
Love this place! Local and friendly atmosphere. Wonderful daily specials. Reasonable prices. AND THE CINNAMON ROLLS!!!!!
(5)DeathandFood H.
Love this no frills breakfast place. Service was fast and friendly and the food was simple and good. I have no idea if the ingredients are organic or local but what I can tell you is the biscuits and gravy taste just like biscuits and gravy should. We waited around 10 minutes for a two stools at the counter and watched the small army of workers hustle. We decided to have piece of strawberry ruhbarb pie to start with that they warmed in a microwave. The filled was good but the crust of course was soft from the microwave. I had the summer special of a poached egg, bacon, home fries and buscuits and gravy and all under 10 dollars. The French spouse liked her food. With tax and tip it was still under 30 dollars. Love the prices! It's a great small town diner. Not wheelchair accessible.

August 5th - heading to the west coast with the family When we left Ontario heading to the west coast we decided "no fast food" stops, and we would yelp our way across America (and Canada on the way back). This place was well worth the stop... authentic, down home, great food, and solid service - even in the midst of the breakfast rush!! The five of us each had something different and everything was amazing. Thirty minutes later, three kids were out cold in the back seat, and I was wishing that I had grabbed a slice of pie from the homemade pie display case.

Whatever you do, don't go. I don't want you to be there so that I won't have to wait outside to get breakfast. I want this place to be filled with locals who have run into town to pick up a bag of horse feed-- not those who are headed to Yellowstone and think it looks like a once in a lifetime experience (which it is...). It's like every good cafe or sale barn restaurant in a small town. I'm wonderfully thankful it's held onto Bozeman. If you go (why are you reading my review if you're not taking my advice?!) go early, like 6:30 am, sit on the bar stools, get the bobcat special, talk to the person you don't know sitting next to you, put your phone away and soak in the old milkshake machine, read the brands, get a piece of pie for dessert with your breakfast, and think of all the people before you who have sat on that bar stool. It's wonderful, the food is awesome, show the place some respect.
(5)Mike T.
Very high quality and plentiful food. Service is on spot and very friendly. Delicious fresh brewed ice tea, all local fresh fruit ingredients made from scratch.
(5)Jim O.
I'm from Billings, this is my first time eating here and....well, I'll just reference the second review before this (with a bow to Hannah W) and holler "That goes for me, too!" Coffee's good, food and service and prices are the same and the tourists can take pictures and brag about the Real Cowboy Cafe they found. Can't beat that deal.
(5)Ali P.
Great little diner with basic food and fair prices. The waitresses here are always friendly and attentive. It is a nice alternative to all the "it comes with pine nuts and of course it's gluten free and here's your $4.50 cup of coffee" restaurants in downtown Bozeman.
(5)Audrey B.
The first thing about this place that's not ok is they are closed Sunday's. It's a breakfast restaurant in the middle of downtown. I guess it's their prerogative if they want to shoot themselves in the foot by being closed on what would be their busiest day of the week, but I haven't had a weekend off since I was 13 & people acting like its their given right to be off that day is just stupid, especially in the service industry. The second thing about this place that sucks is the wait staff. We were sitting at their bar for 22 minutes before anyone even talked to us. Didn't offer to grab us drinks, no hello, not even water. Just sat there while they went back & forth in front of us for almost half an hour before noticing us & finally asking if they could get us anything. When we ordered I very clearly stated I wanted coffee. Our meals were brought (by someone other then our waitress) about 10 minutes after we ordered (very fast kitchen staff apparently, much better then the wait staff) & I was half way through my breakfast before the waitress finally gave me the coffee I ordered even though the cups & full pot were right across from up. I even thought about getting up & getting it myself. If I treated anyone like that where I work it would cost me my job. Crappy service & owners that apparently care more about appeasing their lazy crappy employees then servicing their customers. Pretty sure I won't be back.
(2)Debi K.
YUM!! Busy little cafe. Great service (thanks Amy). Home cooked breakfast at its best!!! Don't leave without trying the Cinnamon Roll French Toast!!
(5)Josh K.
Good down home breakfast , Friday morning 10am. Wood and linoleum Cowboy ranch decor , yellow stain glass chandler light. country music playing softly in the background. Took about 25-30 minutes to get food. Everything cooked perfectly , hash browns could have been more seasoned but nothing some hot sauce couldn't fix. Fun place to bring the city folk and family for breakfast.
(4)Jason P.
Not sure what was so great about this place! There was 5 of us and we all ordered something different from breakfast menu and it was pretty gross and way over priced! Why is toast and eggs $8??? Everyone's has towns were nasty, cold, raw! Our server was a bald guy that obviously hated his job - it's one thing to have quick service but be friendly and good at it! It was a pain to ask him for a water, yikes!
(1)Jerry K.
Friendly staff and extremely busy! The food was ok but not great! English muffin was burnt, bone in ribeye was tough.
(3)Lindsay D.
Best breakfast you can get downtown. Basic, greasy, no frills. The prices have gone up, but whose haven't? Hard to say when to go to avoid a crowd. I don't think you can.
(4)Katie B.
This place has some of the best breakfast in Bozeman. There is not a ton of seating but it is worth the wait!!
(4)Jenny H.
3.5 stars Had 8:30 sunday breakfast with no wait. Over easy eggs were overcooked, hashbrowns undercooked, ham tasted high quality, aka delicious, and the pancakes were possibly my favorite of all time. Perfectly browned and fuffy with just a little resistance to the fork. Quite obvious that they are cooked on a well seasoned grill top. Service was great.
(3)Trixie B.
Had breakfast on a Saturday morning, and seated right away. The staff was a little harried, but that is because the lady manager de jour was awful and micromanaging everyone. We were made to stand and wait for the empty and clean table until she had put the water, silverware and napkins on it. I had my 83 year old father with me. Yikes. That being said the food is good. Chicken fried steak and gravy the bomb. Could have had more gravy. Be sure to ask for your hash brows extra crispy if you like them that way, otherwise kind of a slab of grated potato. Coffee excellent. Decor campy and fun. Not my first choice for the above mentioned reasons, but would return if only for the chicken fried steak and gravy. Lots of locals.
(3)Brittney W.
Great 'greasy spoon' type place. One of a few around here. Great portions, and pricing was decent for Bozeman.
(5)Claire M.
Breakfast with 'Mario' at the western cafe. Excellent omelet and blueberry pancakes. Sat outside on the patio on a bright blue sky morning. Big sky country. - Big wonderful food.
(4)Heather M.
This is a fantastic old-fashioned diner that serves up a great breakfast at fair prices. We had the biscuits and gravy and eggs and hash browns. Everything was perfect. Our waitress was rushed but made time for us and made sure we had coffee refills. What impressed me the most was the atmosphere. This is an honest to goodness diner where I could picture Flo serving up grits. A lot of hipster places aim for that and pathetically miss the mark, but the Western Cafe does it without even trying. You don't have to try when you're the fo rizz.
(5)Mike J.
Enjoyed a great breakfast here on a very busy Saturday morning! The place is not that big, but they pack 'um in and serve 'um quick. We were there during the breakfast rush hour and had to wait about 20 minutes to get a table. Our waitress was super nice, food and drinks came quickly. I was in a group of 5 and everyone was completely satiated. Ambience is rustic western - very nice - and prices are very reasonable too. If you are in Bozeman you have to eat breakfast here at least once!!
(5)Jake M.
It is a true Montana cafe. Great coffee and food. Love the atmosphere. I always get the bobcat special with a cinnamon roll. Even though you might be crammed in like sardines the people are great and it makes you feel at home. Go Bobcats!
(5)Dan B.
The western is a Bozeman breakfast staple..hearken back 40 years ago and the place would probably look the same..sans Gore tex and fleece that most patrons don. Sure the coffee is weak, place could be cleaner, and the regulars take precedent when getting served..but that's how it should be. A place where locals are recognized and appreciated...can't get that at Ihop. Go with any of the specials posted on the wall behind the counter...that is the 'insider' tip. Anything with gravy is good. Cinnamon rolls are best in town!
(5)Kiersta C.
Service was absolutely terrible, went the whole time with no refill on our drinks, food wasn't cooked the way we asked it to be, eggs were underdone hash browns were raw, cinnamon roll French toast was not what it was made out to be, our toast was burnt. We really wanted to love this place it has an eclectic ambiance and looks like a whole in the wall place that has been here forever but we just couldn't. If you're just passing through as we are I wouldn't advise stopping. Having traveled across America love to try these local spots... Most are as wonderful as you hoped unfortunately this one seems to be resting on it's past reputation.

I don't get it, all the positive reviews that is. As a recent transplant to Bozeman I was referred to the Western by the Secret Bozeman fb page in a post asking who had the best biscuits n gravy in town. The Western and Storm Castle had the most recommendations, so my boyfriend and I hustled to the Western the next morning to see for ourselves. We both loved the super cute restaurant interior and the service was very nice, albeit very very slow, both in being seated (despite empty tables) and in receiving our orders. When our food came both of plates looked really unappetizing. My boyfriends chicken fried steak was simultaneously burnt and yet soggy. My biscuits n gravy weren't any better. I can honestly say there wasn't a decent thing on my plate! My scrambled eggs were over cooked and greyish (dirty flat top?), my hash browns were cold and wet, the biscuit was nothing special and the gravy was really thin and completely tasteless. I was so disappointed. I hail from Texas originally where biscuits n gravy mean business. I've been looking for the best biscuits n gravy in Bozeman and was so hopeful the Western would be it. Based on all the food between our two plates I would never go back. I should also mention to my own horror and embarrassment that several hours following our meal both my boyfriend and I experienced epic bathroom decimations. Not quite food poisoning but not pleasant either. In my six months since arriving in bozeman I've had breakfast at Nova, the pharmacy in Ennis, and the cat eye several times. ALL of these are FAR superior in food quality.

Prices are right on the mark thick cut bacon place is packed waitress is funny service great. I'm moving this place to billings you guys have had out long enough. Will be back this is a winner and was a great find
(4)Al H.
Stopped in w/ 6 guys from Boston for quick brunch while passing through BOZ. Friendly, fast service with delicious comfort food. Especially loved the owner Susan who took care of us and made everyone feel at home. Very authentic spot with good food and good people.
(5)Jan K.
The Western Cafe in Bozeman, allegedly famous for cinnamon rolls, doesn't have any available before 9 am. What?? I was born in Bozeman. My dad keeps telling me how good the rolls are. I've been trying to get a roll here for the last several years, every time I'm in town. Every other time I've been there, they've been sold out already. But this time, they're not ready yet, at 7:30 in the morning? Got biscuits and gravy instead. The biscuits were sweet, tasted like cake batter. With sausage gravy. Eww. What is wrong with these people? Not everything needs to be sweetened. I won't be going back, and shame on them.
(1)Jackie W.
I eat here more than any other place in Bozeman. The owner is a doll, I love the food and atmosphere...including the music. I guess I'm kind of like a 70 year old man...I can sit there for an hour drinking coffee and doing a crossword puzzle. It's just that kind of place. Also, their lunch specials are the best value in town. It is almost always under $8, and generally includes soup, salad, a homemade entree and and awesome homemade dessert. Cant beat that!
(5)Brett A.
The food is OK. Make sure to go early on a weekday, on weekends it is over run by tourists and trust funding college students from VT who think they are Montanans or they are looking for a "Montana Experience." But we all know trustfunders arent up before 11 so go early and avoid their obnoxious habits and stench. Notice that most of the reviews on here are from people not from MT, so take that into consideration. It is the last hold out of what bozeman used to be, but it seems more and more that the crowd is changing and ruining it. Get in before some yuppie buys the place up.
(4)Apollo Y.
I love the feel of this place!!! This is one of those hole-in-the-wall kinda places where it's small n everybody knows everybody....as soon as you walk in you feel like you've just walked into somebody's house but it's pretty cool n the food is not bad either.
(3)Fozzie D.
I rarely give out five stars, but this place is worthy. Keep in mind, this is a no frills, western motif diner, so under these conditions, it merits five stars. Staff eventually warms up to you, so don't mind too much. This place opens daily at 6:00am....Nice! Had the biscuits and gravy...biscuit was light and fluffy, gravy was just savory enough. Came with a side of bacon and hash brown potatoes, also good. My dining companion had the eggs Benedict and he thought it was very good....must have been, since he licked the plate clean. TIP: Since we were on the way to Yellowstone (2.5 hours away), we also ordered a couple of sandwiches to go (one ham and one club). After six hours, we stopped at Yellowstone Lake and had a picnic lunch; the sandwiches were still fresh and tasty. The lettuce and tomatoes held up well...so tasty after all that driving. Glad Yogi and Boo-boo never came by, cause I would've fought them over these sandwiches. Such a kitsch place, we wanted to buy their souvenir T-shirts, but alas, so did everyone else that preceded us....only XXL and XXXL sizes left.
(5)Seth W.
The Western is the familiar Main Street breakfast place you remember from your hometown at some undetermined time in the past. The consistency and familiarity of the menu and setting are some of its strongest points. The food is great, but not at all daring or new. Not a place for coffee that has a name, or that is strong in any way. Sometimes, though, at 6 in the morning it is all I can think about or manage. Advice: Get there before church lets out and read the paper at the counter while rebel country plays on satellite radio. After church the Western is packed, and the radio switches to pop country. Seating can be close quarters, but well behaved children will do well. Breakfast biscuit sandwich, biscuits and gravy or eggs benedict, it's hard to go wrong.
(4)Jennifer K.
We had a friend visiting us for the weekend and he insisted on going to his favorite breakfast place, the Western Cafe. What a pleasant surprise! I expected greasy breakfast food, but that's not the case here. We went on a Sunday morning around 9:30 am and the place was packed, for good reason! The atmosphere is very welcoming, has a local feeling and just the right touch for it to be authentically western in ambiance. It took about 10 minutes to get seats since they were so busy, but the staff really have a way of putting you at ease with their friendly demeanor and smiles, even with how busy they were. The food was excellent! Large portions for reasonable price. Excellent service, food and atmosphere. We plan to enjoy breakfast here again soon!
(5)Ben T.
Disappointing. The place is great, nice little slice of Bozeman history and the service is friendly and helpful. I just had the 'famous' chicken-fried steak that was devoid of flavor and texture. The breading was soggy and tasteless and falling off, the steak was like eating chewy, spongy rubber. The gravy was thin, greasy and tasteless. The hash browns were cold and tasteless. Not great and sadly I won't be coming back. "Yesterdays" in Ennis still gets my vote for best chicken-fried steak in the area.
(2)James R.
I dropped in to the Western Cafe while on a solo ski trip this past winter. Even on a mid-morning weekday it was busy. Nice people working the room. The counter stools were low and a little cramped when another person sat next to me, but other than that, no real complaints. The biscuits and gravy were tasty and priced right; scrambled eggs were done right. Coffee was fair. I skipped the cinnamon rolls...maybe on my next visit. A regular, 3-star, A-OK joint for breakfast. We need more places like this one.
(3)Dan H.
I love that this place is still here. Not that I was ever there before. Another in the Eat Your Way Across the USA book. A few places along our route were no longer in business. I'm happy this one is and seems to be doing pretty well. They are known for their cinnamon rolls so I ordered one. It was about the size of my head. It came out before the meal did, so I took a few forks of it and put it on the side. Save the best for last. I was getting slightly tired of eggs as I'd had them with every breakfast on this trip, but even the french toast here came with side of eggs. The platter that came out was stacked with 2 pieces of french toast and large portions of eggs and ham. Everything was nice and hot and quite tasty. Somehow after all the food I went back to attacking the cinnamon roll. I figured I'd eat a bit and take the rest to go. Guess not. I found some extra space in my stomach for it and finished it up. It makes me happy that there are still restaurants like this around. A place that has been around for a long time serving quality food at reasonable prices. It seems that a place like this should be able to thrive for years to come in a college town like Bozeman.
(5)Christy J.
Tasty, quick and friendly service, plentiful portions--coming back next time we pass through!
(4)KP H.
Ready for some hearty rib-sticking breakfast? Head to the Western! Finally tried this local favorite and I totally understand the appeal. Great service and great food. The cinnamon roll french toast is not too be missed nor are the delicious omelets. I am not much of an egg fan normally, but they cook these omelets up perfectly. Fluffy, golden and the perfect amount of fresh veggies and cheese! I can't give 5 stars because the coffee is terrible and a breakfast joint just needs good coffee.
(4)Micaela M.
Priced right. Great coffee. Good home cooking! I really like that owner is there every time. She is a proud owner, super friendly, she loved on our baby girl, really clean. You can tell staff take pride in their work and workplace.
(4)Jess R.
Nostalgic local diner, bursting with culinary history. Must stop for breakfast when in Bozeman MT. Biscuits & gravy are a must have!
(5)Bobbi S.
The breakfast was phenomenal here. Their chicken fried steak, homemade sausage gravy and cinnamon roll French toast is a must. Friendly staff and excellent service. Will definitely be back next time in Bozeman.
(5)Ryan R.
I kindly informed Heather, our waitress, that the Western Cafe has the sexiest pancakes in town! Great food, great service- the place was packed, yet Heather stayed right up with the lunch rush. I highly recommend the Chicken Fried Steak, quite tasty little plate of wholesome goodness.
(5)Austin E.
Best biscuits & gravy in town! Nothing matches the bobcat special.. Cinnamon roll french Toast... Wow!
(5)Jeanne C.
We loved the traditional feel of this diner, but were less than impressed with the food. We were there on a rather mellow Monday morning and the restaurant was less than half full. We sat at the counter and enjoyed seeing fly fishing rods mounted to the wall as decor and homemade cherry and pumpkin pies in the glass-covered pie case. However, my toast arrived later than my bacon and eggs and was undercooked and slightly soggy. The hash browns filled our plates and were rather tasteless and had an overly crunchy layer resting on top of an undercooked one.
(3)Marianne H.
Ah! I love the breakfast at this local joint. Menu is great because you can order individual items. I wanted French toast, but not the whole shabang with eggs and hashbrowns since I was saving space for the cinnamon rolls. French toast + side order of sausages. Perfect breakfast! But of course--cinnamon rolls were amazing. My uncle called before we came in to see if they could hold some for us, but they assured us they'd have them when we got there--which surprisingly, they did. We ordered five, and then the wonderful, wonderful owner gave us three more to take back to San Francisco. Can't wait till we come back again next summer!
(5)David G.
I want to live at this place! Yes it is loud, chaotic, busy, but they have the best breakfast in Montana! Love the Chicken Fried Steak, Benedict looks wonderful. Staff know what they are doing and get your meal to you in short order. Darn it I'm drooling...
(5)Riki-Lynn G.
Great service!! Fairly large portion for the price you pay... Eggs Benedict was great, but my eggs were ar little hard. My son got 2 pancakes-- he loved it! The food came out nice and hot-- EVEN the syrup was warmed up! Love that! The staff is very attentive and friendly!! Love cafe's like this! It's somewhere I can take Grandpa...and my kids. My daughter got her very own coloring book and box of crayons! It's a "working" class kinda place...yet at the same time... college types were in there too! VERY Montana.
(4)Tom G.
Biscuits and gravy. Perfect after flying all night from Alaska! There am be better in town but I don' know how.
(4)Jack E.
Eggs Benedict exceeded my expectations! Expertly prepared and served in a western cowboy atmosphere. Friends had another breakfast entre and a deluxe bacon cheeseburger. We all raved at the quality and quantity. We'll be back many times!
(5)Aaron P.
Probably the best in Bozeman. Great service, great food, great price! Really big portions too. Come hungry!
(4)C H.
I really like this place. It has a VERY local feel and from what I have been told it was the place the cowboys would ride to early in the morning and hitch their horses up out back on a hitching post. Guess I am a little nostalgic for the old west but this place is a simple greasy spoon. Nothing fancy or extravagant but a good place for breakfast non the less.
(4)Sally L.
Excellent coffee. Best I have had other than my own. Very good food. I would recommend it.
