Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Saw this place as I was driving around Bozeman on a rainy day. Since I'm half Italian (from CT), I was craving eggplant parm. It came on foccacia that was crispy and soft with a salad covered with snowy Parmesan shavings and heirloom tomatoes. I thoroughly enjoyed it! For dessert, I had the cannoli which was crispy and the filling was not too sweet or too heavy, just right. As far as the service goes, I haven't had bad service yet in Montana, must be something in the water. Everyone is so nice and friendly. A nice change from Houston!

This is a small and elegant upscale Italian restaurant. The menu is done correctly with a selection of northern Italian and "upscale" southern. A very nice varied menu. I almost had the Pesto Pappardelle. We shared the Montana Meatballs appetizer. Excellent, though my mother-in-law would have described them as a little on the hard side. The sauce was sweet - Sicilian style. Susie ordered the Ricotta gnocchi. I ordered Orechiette Rustics. Waitress Anna is highly attentive and beautiful.

Just got done eating here with the family and hate to say that it was horrible. The waiting staff was a little too nonchalant for the restaurants atmosphere and slightly condescending. Waaay overpriced for the food quality and overall experience. I ordered the Trout Piccata (with gluten free spaghetti) $28. Presentation was nice, but once I took a bite my palate was met with a mouthful of bland, steamed trout and pin-bones. The gummy pasta was flavorless and definitely wasn't cooked in salted water. To top it off it all sat in a soupy mess of sauce. I deboned my trout and lined my plate with the pin-bones then told the waiter to notify the chef about the quality. He apologized and said they tried their best to remove all the bones and proceeded to not compensate in anyway (or tell the chef I'm sure) Everyone agreed their food was bland. Espresso was sour as well. Good attempt at Italian.

I read on another review that the Orecchiette "was to die for" at this restaurant. I'm here to report that it has officially died. The orecchiette was served in a soup bowl with an accompanying spoon, which was fitting because the pasta was drowning in a soupy red sauce. I almost asked the server for a slotted spoon to 'drag the lake' for some chunks of pasta, but my wife suggested using my fork. Voila... Verdict: #notsomuch

This place has awesome food! I dig it- had the shrimp scampi, was great! I highly recommend it

Small cool place near Montana State. Great food and good wine and beer list. Pretty casual and simple place but I really liked it.

I have been to Blacksmith Italian a number of times now, and have yet to do so without ordering the Brussels sprouts. Best I ever had! We also love the arancini, so delicious, and I love that they are small and easily shared. The risotto is also a favorite! I could go on, but a you might as well just look at the menu, it's all good. Nice selection of wine as well. Do try to make a reservation, the place is not large!

Had I decided to write this review after my first visit, we'd be looking at three stars but two successive visits have convinced me that the problems encountered originally were only growing pains. While it isn't cheap for what it is, that is Bozeman and I'm trying not to let that ruin every place. The service has been excellent, every time there was an issue, no matter how trivial, they have made every attempt to rectify the situation. That is hard to find around here. The food is always good, and like I said, most pasta dishes are overpriced but executed flawlessly. The filet mignon is possibly the best steak I have had at an Italian establishment. The wine selection is very limited but they interesting and novel, albeit too pricey for what they are. The atmosphere has improved as I believe they removed a couple of tables which helped with the noise level and crowding. You're still within inches of your neighbor, but it's certainly better than it was in the beginning. A good restaurant for a date with a special someone if you're not requiring a lot of privacy.

Always fantastic. The service and food are amazing.

The steak and gorganzola salad is pretty good. I worked nearby and ordered it five or six times with well done steak. Steak always ended up rare and make sure to get dressing on the side because they tend to be heavy handed, at least at lunch time. Also, get extra lettuce.

The wait staff was very friendly, and the food was quite nice. However, the atmosphere was not welcoming or relaxing at all. It was so loud that I felt like I was trying to eat in a crowded bar on a Friday night. If I would have been able to enjoy my wine and food in a quieter more calm environment it would have been a much different experience.

Last night I dined at Blacksmith w three ladies and we didn't hold back. We ordered apps, salads, meals and two deserts. Mussels for app and that dish is the reason 4 stars and not 5. Great broth but the mussels were small and stringy. No Bueno. The two salads- Caesar and beets and goat cheese were fantastic. The beet salad was the table favorite. We all ordered different meals - the squid ink pasta was the least favorite at the table. The trout was the table winner, great favors and perfectly done. Shrimp linguini was a close second. The chioppino was not nailed, w a little tweaking it could be fantastic. No one had room for desert but we went ahead and ordered two. Choc Creme brûlée and the tiramisu = incredible!!!! Wow. Great wines to choose from too! It was a fantastic meal and the price for four w wine came out to 50 a person plus a tip. If you are looking for a great dinner in Bozeman go here. Don't go at 7:15 or you might wait 30 like we did. It's a small space but has great servers.

Very good Italian restaurant! We came to celebrate a birthday and had a very enjoyable evening. Our waiter was fantastic and promptly got us started with a solid wine recommendation. The caprese salad was an outstanding start to the meal. Both the lasagna and shrimp scampi were good, but be prepared for a lot of food! We finished with the dark chocolate creme brûlée and while it was thicker than you might expect for creme brûlée it was delicious! We will definitely recommend this for a nice dinner outing!

4.5 stars if possible. Very nice addition to the Bozeman eating scene. The decor is a little open and light, but we were able to carry on a nice conversation. The meals were authentic and excellent. Three of us, each trying something different, (and not easy to prepare) and happy with the results. I reluctantly tired a rose they were pushing, and was very pleasantly surprised. Haven't tried a rose in 20 years. Ingredients seemed fresh,. service was excellent, and the timing was above average. Blacksmith could easily become one of our go-to places for a reasonably priced weeknight date-night.

Very heavy, heavy, heavy food. Service was mediocre. Portions very large, but heavy on the cream and less on the flavor.
(2)Ryan B.
I tried the bone marrow because I had never tried it before and was curious. It was nothing to write home about. As for my entree, the gnocchi, I was a little disappointed. Overall my experience was decent and I'd be willing to give them a second shot only because I've heard others say such great things about this place.
(3)Meredith J.
MUST recommend the fried risotto ball appetizer. And the butterscotch Budino for dessert. The whole meal was amazing...never thought I'd see the day when Bozeman got amazing Italian food. Well. It's here. And it's homemade noodles. And it's unique flavors. And it's PHENOMENAL service. Cannot wait to go back. Hopefully I can convince myself to try something new...I just want more of what I had this time!
(5)Tyson S.
Awesome meal, great atmosphere and staff! The bone marrow and the pancetta stuffed dates are both TO DIE FOR!
(5)Annie M.
Really fabulous lunch. Had the salami sandwich and the prosciutto sandwich with chianti and rose wines. Authentic Italian. Great wine selection. Friendly professional service. At last - great real Italian food in bozeman.

I'm an out of towner (L.A) but this restaurant is a gem and VERY impressive. We came for a family gathering to celebrate moms birthday so it was a large group. For starters, the mussels are incredibly good, very well balanced flavors, not too much wine, not too much garlic and very fresh parsley...awesomesauce. We also had the bone marrow and arancini which were both mouth watering and a VERY generous portion for the bone marrow, lightly coated with a great pesto. Tasty. For the entrées, we had the Lasagna which was the special, the Roasted Leg of Lamb, the Manicotti, the paradise valley Trout Piccata and the mushroom Risotto. I had the lasagna but got a taste of everything and it was ALL excellent. Very fresh and all locally sourced, so delicious. The wine selection was also very good, a nice mix of Italian and Californian wines. We went with a bottle of the Colosi, Sicilian Rosso, it complemented the lasagna and manicotti very well. For dessert, we had the whole gamut, but I have to say the Tiramisu is probably one of the best I've ever had...and I've travelled Italy a few times. The service was excellent as well, our server was very friendly and attentive to our needs. Needless to say, we will be coming back to Blacksmith Italian when we are in Bozeman again. If you're a local consider yourself lucky. If you're a passer by, this is a must.

This place was incredible! I came in from out of town and was told that I had to go from some customers. I sat at the bar and was lucky enough to meet the father and son that own and operate the place. Great guys and amazing food and atmosphere. The chowder is great! The Grilled Cesar was great! My favorite appetizer had to be the Stuffed Dates w/ Gorgonzola (they were amazing!) served over field greens so I felt like I was eating healthy. My main course was the Shrimp Scampi with the homemade Spaghetti. (These guys make all of their own pasta) I ate the leftovers for lunch and it was still delicious. Great dessert too! I had the Ghirardelli Chocolate Creme Brûlée. I liked that it wasn't too rich so I could finish the whole thing but I could have split it because it's a decent size Brûlée. I wish I could be here longer to could enjoy the Spaghetti and meatballs w/ a beer for $10 or smthng like that on Monday nights. (Being from Portland I appreciate a good beer and they have a good local IPA on Tap) they also have a lot of wine. Overall I was really happy with my experience and I would definitely go again when in town.

My family and I ate at Blacksmith Italian recently. Overall, our experience was very frustrating. It took our waitress almost twenty minutes to bring us our bread. She was not attentive to our table. More than five times she made her rounds across the floor and completely ignored us. We saw two tables receive their bread and main course before us even though we had been seated at least 5 to 10 minutes before them. The quality of our entrees far surpassed the quality of our service. Our appetizer, the Roasted Bone Marrow, was extremely delicious. All three of us really enjoyed our dinner. I had the Squid Ink Tagliatelle and it was very very good. Unfortunately, our desserts were extremely disappointing. We ordered the Tiramisu and the Vanilla Yogurt Panna Catta. The Tiramisu was very dry and the Panna Catta did not have the right consistency. The texture of it was more like mozzarella. I would eat at Blacksmith Italian again, but I would ask for the food to-go and skip the dessert.

Great fresh homemade pasta and delicious combinations. I had the Gnocci and it was fantastic and very filling!
(5)Geoff Y.
Cozy atmosphere with limited seating. Attentive and professional staff. Meals landing from the $10 special on up to the mis-30's. Our table had a variety of foods from small plates, salad, entrees, and desert. All was homemade and delicious. We'll be back.

Last night (10/25/14) we visited Blacksmith with friends for the second time. The waiter was excellent as was the atmosphere. However, had this been our first visit we probably would not return because of the food. Although our first visit to the Blacksmith was a pleasure due to the food, this time we were not so fortunate. Bad night in the kitchen. My wife's shrimp scampi was so infused with garlic and so salty that she couldn't finish it. My veal parmesan was a real dissapointment; the meat was ground and had large pieces of gristle in it. It was flavorless and it seemed spiceless. Darn. The bread, wine and desert were delicious but the the two dishes I mentioned were terrible. Yes, we'll go back again some day but not right away.
(3)Betsy Q.
Utterly average. The food was fine, but not notable in any way. I had the Chicken Marsala which was again, fine, but bland and the wine sauce needed more reduction. The fish special was decent, as was the sausage and orecchiette. Nothing to write home about, nor, for that matter, to return for...
(3)Carson D.
Really impressed overall. Started with wine...obviously. Roasted Bone Marrow to start, Seafood Cioppino and Shrimp Scampi Over Spaghetti as entrees. Finished with really good Cannoli and coffee. The food was terrific, the server was knowledgeable, friendly, and unpretentious. Can't wait to get back.
(5)Stephen M.
Nice atmosphere, service was nice and friendly. Explain the menu and house favorites. Portions size were great. The meals were a inventive twist on typical Italian compared to eastern US Italian. The dessert, Dark chocolate creme bulee was awesome.
(5)Alexis R.
Amazing food, had the meatball hoagie for lunch- delicious. Finally some authentic Italian food in this city. Nice atmosphere, and a very nice owner. Definitely Recommend!
(5)Nancy J.
Loved the food - I don't normally order meat w/pasta, but the sausage and orecchiette was to die for. Staff was super friendly. Definitely recommend and will for sure return.
(5)Lily D.
Great food and service. I have enjoyed all the desserts I have tried, the grilled cesar salad, and many entrees. I appreciate this restaurant offering a cheap meal on Monday nights (spaghetti and meatballs and beer for $10).
(5)Grace G.
Outstanding restaurant! Just returned from my second meal at Blacksmith, and both experiences were phenomenal. The quality of the food and the way it is prepared is what makes this place great. The service is friendly, attentive, and helpful. This restaurant is one of the best in Bozeman (and I have been to almost every one). My boyfriend said the trout risotto is the best meal he has ever had. We cannot wait to return.
(5)Melissa M.
Dropped into this restaurant by accident. The menu is the perfect size. It was hard to make a choice. I went with the Blacksmith salad and cauliflower soup with truffled oil. It was wonderful!
(5)Shauna H.
Small but so good! Wonderful staff and delicious food. I had the Montana beef tenderloin and it was so tender! We will be back soon!
(4)May S.
The food is great. Locally sourced and very we'll put together - definitely much better than other Italian joints in town (ie Ferraro's). Great wine list too. Service wasn't bad, but wasn't fitting with such a nice place. The ambience was a bit off too, tightly packed but without that intimate feeling.
(4)Tim C.
First time visit. Exceptional! I had the seafood risotto and it was cooked perfectly. The shrimp, mussels, and squid completely complimented the risotto. Very reasonably priced, well chosen wine list, and excellent service and ambience.
(5)Elsa C.
I have dined here twice and have enjoyed it thoroughly. The salmon risotto was very good but incredibly rich. The Caesar salad was a great twist on the original and we enjoyed the uniqueness of it. The spicy sausage in red sauce (forget what it was called) was wonderful. But the brussels sprouts deserve their own review. Whoa! Amazing! Best brussels sprouts EVER. Deep fried so they have a delightful crispiness to them with pancetta and parm. Highly recommend.
(4)Ashley C.
Where do I start?... I was impressed. First, the servers were friendly, always smiling and polite. We were seated immediately at the blue and green lit bar, which was new and clean, the atmosphere was warm, cozy, and inviting. The wine was good and the food came out quickly, which brings me to my next point--the food. I am Italian, and this was excellent Italian cuisine. The butternut squash soup was unique from others I've had in the past, and I love that about it. It was delicious. And the carmelized brussel sprouts were incredible, just divine! The chef (also the owners son) KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING! Half of the kitchen was visible, which I thought was clever (whether it was done on purpose or not), because I like seeing the food being made with the natural ingredients, like there was nothing to hide! But most importantly is the owner, STEVE. His warm smile and hospitality made us (out of towners) feel like friends. He, his staff, and his restaurant are welcoming and inviting. This was a wonderful dining experience and I would DEFINITLY recommend it to all (and will). Thanks Blacksmith Italian!
(5)Dennis M.
WOW. A great Italian experience in Bozeman! Super friendly and attentive service. Make a reservation though, as it is not a big place and already has built a big following. Has "colorful" (lighted) bar seating. The very tasty Caesar salad wedge split nicely for two (served on two plates for us). Neat Bread "chunks" (sourdough, I think...made locally). The salmon on Risotto was awesome, yummy but be hungry as it is pretty rich in the creme sauce (with fried capers). The sweet potato Gnocchi with squash was good, but a little bit dry for my taste. Never had any better Brussel Sprouts as their side order! As I recall the menu, all dishes were $20 or less. A bit noisy, but not unusually so. Our server, Lindsey, was really nice. The owner checked with us to be sure all was well. It WAS. :-) We will be back. Some friends of ours were there and they said they two dishes were awesome as well. Beats the pants off Johnny Carino's.
