Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Seriously disappointed! From the time we were sat at a table in the back of the restaurant to the time a wait staff came to our table to provide water and ask us if we wanted non-complimentary chips & salsa was a minimum of 20 minutes. My husband's bottle of beer was delivered at least 10 minutes AFTER two nearby tables ordered and received their beverages (margaritas and mixed drinks). Then a busboy asked if we would care for more chips and salsa -- it would be nice if they told us that there was a charge beforehand -- and assuming that it was free (because I've been to too-many-to-count Mexican restaurants and never have been billed for chips and salsa) -- well, a second requested serving never materialized, so I was only 1/2 surprised when I got the bill. Then the food ... OK, it's Montana and most Mexican restaurants in this region aren't accomplished in preparing authentic, cuisine -- El Topo is no exception -- "BLAND" best describes the food. It may be reputed to be popular with locals ... but not this one!

This is the best Mexican restaurant I've had in a long time, especially in Montana. Great food and terrific service. Great fish taco and the burritos are great to share they're so big get extra sauce tho just because its that good. Thanks for the good work kitchen.

Stopped in on a frigid Friday night w my family of 5. Our timing seemed to be perfectly awful as the restaurant was full and the waitress told us everyone came in at once, basically right before us. So we could forgive them slow service at the beginning. The decor was interesting - definitely put effort into collecting Mexican nicknacks for the walls. We started off w a couple pitchers of a mid-level margarita, which was quite tasty. Not too much sour mix. Well made. Then we chowed down on like 20 baskets of chips w salsa and guacamole. Salsa was good, but guacamole, as it often is, was a bit bland. Restaurants always seem afraid to add any heat to it. Also coulda used more pepper and lime. Anyway, I had a fish taco (not the mahi mahi), which was quite tasty - big. Also a side of black beans (fine) and a salad of some sort. I can't remember and the menu isn't online - but I liked it. The rest of my party enjoyed their food too. It included an enchilada and other stuff I tasted. (I clean the plates). Pretty decent tex mex

Not the best and definitely not authentic Mexican food but pretty decent and the best in Bigfork. I make about 2 trips to Bigfork a year and it's one of my favorite places for dinner. Be aware of the fact they are only open from 4pm to 10pm daily. The also have some pretty good margaritas.

Really, this is about as good as it gets in Montana if you want Mexican food. Don't let the exterior fool you - drive by and you may think what we thought: can't see anyone in there, must not be open (or good). Wrong! Great fish tacos, corn tortilla for those avoiding gluten, grilled mahi-mahi, mango salsa...yum. Chips and salsa are at nominal cost, which is different for those of us used to the West Coast bottomless chips and salsa, but you really don't need to eat a metric ton of chips, do you? Love that there is a pinto or black bean option. El Topo has a bar license, and has ACTUAL margaritas. Woot! No wine-a-rita here. Super friendly service, good food and lots of it. One taco plus rice and beans was plenty of food. I'm going back.

Not very good! We are visiting from Colorado. We were not expecting great Mexican food up here, but this place was overpriced and awful. As another reviewer commented, they charge for the usually free chips and salsa. Chips are cold. Salsa is chunky, but flavorless and needs more heat. Queso dip tastes like the cheese from the machine at a gas station.

This place used to be awesome. Last time we went, something was terribly wrong. The chips, which used to be thin, perfectly crispy harbingers of fresh salsa? Not anymore. Bland, old, stale. That made me panic. I started looking around at other people's food. It wasn't the same. Service was terrible. We cut our losses and ran. $7 for one beer, and terrible chips and salsa.

I had been there once before and had a pretty bad and expensive experience. 10 years later gave it another shot with family and friends in tow, bad idea. Poor service below average food and fairly overpriced. Second star because I didn't get ill.

Great atmosphere, loved my margarita and the fish tacos were killer.

We had a good meal. That is, my compliments to the cooks in the kitchen. Good floors. Nice presentation. Plenty to eat. Unfortunately, our server left our meal on the counter, so the very hot plate was not. Tepid food is tepid and uninviting. It undid all the good work of the kitchen. I am sure we will give it another try. I hope we get another server next time.

El Topo doesn't have much info online so I've posted pics of their menu. Small menu but good food. Friendly service and not very busy.

Soooo good! We knew we were in for a treat when we were served the chips. Lite thin salted just right and made in house an hour before. Our waiter Adam was so proud of the menu offerings and brought us a taste of mango salsa that is so perfect they could make it into a pie! Also we asked for guacamole and so glad we did. Their regular salsa is also superb. Each item was made in house and finely crafted. And Adam continued to enhance the dinner with his enthusiasm. My Husband ordered the Carne Asada Tacos Fresco and loved the tender steak which melted in his mouth. Again the sauce was full of flavor. I am partial to fish tacos and was very pleased. By the end of the meal we were introduced to the head chef Max and we also were able to speak with the owner. This is a place not to miss. Outstanding. We will be missing them until we can return.

We stopped in here for dinner on a Sunday night after discovering most of Big Fork was closed on Sundays. Yelp reviews had adequately warned us about lineups and we arrived just in time to beat the rush. Service was friendly but uninspired - and we found ourselves looking for our servers attention more than once. The pace is more suited for a long leisurely meal than a quick drop in dinner. Shared the shrimp - mahi mahi fajita plate which was delicious. The homemade tomato salsa was excellent, guacamole was so-so. Overall a decent place, but nothing to write home about and certainly not the best Mexican in the area.

El Topo has a solid reputation as a locals' favorite for its bar, its staff, its value-for-the-money food and its welcoming attitude to anyone else passing through. As a local I appreciate seeing or making a friend whenever I stop in. I enjoy the relaxed setting and its feeling of community. My favorite dishes are the fish tacos (I order on a corn tortilla and they come either fried or grilled), black beans, Caesar salad (yes, invented in Mexico), jalapeno crisp--and the Chili Verde ordered very spicy is terrific. Shrimp Venganza (again, ordered very spicy for me) is full of veggies and is nicely sauced. There is an appetizer steak which is very good (at least I think it's on the appetizer list---see the special menu--and it's big enough to be an entrée). The steak is marinated, full of flavor and super tender (wish I could offer more insight to other dishes, but I'm one of those who sticks to a narrow rotation of favorites once I latch onto what I like). The top shelf margaritas are excellent, as is the tequila selection (try a shot of Corzo Anejo). Beers on tap include local and Dos XX. While you're ordering your drink check out the variety of knickknacks around the bar area--pretty cool stuff. The wine list, including the house wines, is A-OK by me. I'm picky with my drinkies and El Topo aims to please with a nonstandard ingredient (I like jalapenos in my libations) or a cocktail prepared just the way you like it. There are several good-to-great food and drink destinations in Bigfork. El Topo is different because singing songs or being a little silly after a cocktail (or two) is taken in stride by the patrons and staff alike. If you are feeling really silly, the vast array of windup toys may provide you hours of entertainment while the drinks flow. I'm kinda silly so El Topo works for me.

This is NOT authentic Mexican. Think Taco Bell meets Old El Paso. The enchiladas are covered with Old ElPaso canned enchilada sauce. The tortillas are not homemade - the soft corn tortilla holding the taco dissolved when I tried to pick it up to eat it. No refried beans; black beans or pinto beans instead. No flavor. No flavor to the shredded beef in the tacos or enchiladas. No flavor to the Spanish rice. (No refried beans? Really?) You won't find any Mexicans eating here. Somebody said the locals eat here - that would be local gringos who don't know or like authentic Mexican food. Nice atmosphere and friendly service, but very disappointing cuisine.

Even for Montana standards this place is horrific, I loathe Taco Johns but would prefer that to this one! The best thing was the cheap wine which killed the taste of what they call Mexican food. My Carne Asada looked like Chinese Beef, it had a garlicky sauce that tasted like something you'd get in a Chinese Restaurant. My husband had Chicken Tacos and they were awful, he was sick for 3 days afterwards. The Salsa was more like tomato paste, with chunks of garlic. I asked the waitress who the chef was and she said the owner, he lived in Mexico for 2 years and brought back recipes! Hate to be brutal with this review but maybe we should have had a couple Margaritas before we ate to mask the taste.

Great atmosphere and great food! Get the cheesy crisp (or something like that... kinda like a Mexican pizza) and the fish taco (beer battered, amazing!) All in all if you're in big fork, stop by this place :-) Only flaw that I found was the beans weren't great. Oh and the flan was fantastic..

Our dinner at Ell Topo was a disaster! I ordered a salad with dressing on the side. The waitress said that the owner would not allow dressing on the side. She was very sweet. I asked for a fish taco, plain, nothing on it, and explained that I had some serious food allergies. The taco came swimming in some kind of ketchup-like sauce and topped with raw onions. When I asked if it could be made over, the waitress practically started crying. She said that "they" were very angry in the kitchen about the first taco being sent back. What on earth is going on here? This poor young girl must really need the job. As we left, my husband gave her $10. She then gave me a big hug, as if I was her abuelita or her tia. So sweet. Better to try Taco Mexico over by the laundromat. Really nice people - spanish speaking no less, and a very nice, very authentic menu.

Great Mexican food in Bigfork, MT.? You bet!! El topo is a very surprising place. It looks very unassuming from the outside. Once inside it is warm and friendly with a large very inviting bar. The Margaritas are very good, we had a house Margarita and it tasted great. The food was also very good ,with lots of deep flavor. We were asked if we wanted mild, medium or hot spice, we asked for hot and that is what we got. Not too hot to eat but with a deep cooked all day type of heat. My wife and I both agreed that this was the best Mexican food we have had yet in Montana. The desert we had was the Mexican chocolate ice cream in a pastry covered with spices and more chocolate. It was also very goood. The service was great with a smiley joking waitress that was attentive. The reason I didn't give five stars may seem trivial but they don't use homemade tortillas. I have spent alot of time in Mexico and one of the most simple and enjoyable things you can eat is a fresh handmade tortilla. Once you have eaten one, (more like a dozen) you will never appreciate store bought or machine made tortillas again. Dinner, drinks and desert was under $40. Hard to beat!!!

Ok so after a day on the river we roll in to this place. Wow what a gem, we were a party of 9 so I knew what we were in for. This place impressed me, started with killer margaritas, chips, great salsa and crayons for the kids. We ordered and about 10 minutes the kids had their food. Our food was about 5-6 minutes later. I had the beef special which I would order again, my wife had a fish taco that was out of this world and an appetizer which was outstanding. I will be back and recommend this place to everyone. Great Mexican food in Montana.

This place rocks....amazing margaritas and great tequila selection. Tough to find good mexican food in Montana. Owner operated is a cool perk! She's usually behind the bar and plenty friendly!

This is truely a hidden gem in a far away place! Fresh fried corn tortilla chips are wonderful and they have a house salsa that is nice. Slight negative is that they are not complimentary...but hey, if you don't want them, you don't have to pay for them. Nice atmosphere with a rustic bar and dining room. Wait staff is very friendly. My wife usually has the fish tacos and they are very good. I really like their carnitas, especially in a burrito or enchiladas. Their side beans are whole cooked pintos, not refried, and I think they are good. Margaritas vary from house to high-end. Their house margarita claims "fresh squeezed sweet-sour mix". I make fresh squeezed margaritas at home and El Topo's aren't as fresh as they describe. But, the plus is that they are sold in carafe and pitcher sizes at considerable volume discount (Hey, its Montana...bigger is better). If you want mexican food in Big Fork, you must stop here. Kid friendly too.
