Very good place. Specializing in southern comfort food. I had the shrimp and grits which were delicious but a bit heavy. Fried green tomatoes have a fried egg on top. Yum! Waiter was nice but did not know if they had certain things like specials.

I have eaten at South several times and the food is always quite good. The catfish, roasted chicken, and fried chicken are all delicious. I enjoy the French fries and the skillet corn as well. The meatloaf I had today was flavorful, but the ketchup should come on the side instead of on top of it. It took away from some of the flavor, and some people may not like ketchup. It's a bit of a toss-up whether or not you get cornbread even though it comes with most meals. Presentation is pretty good. The service is a bit slow. We were there for over 30 minutes before our food arrived, which is not good for a 1 hour work lunch. I have had good servers there before, but it is a bit inconsistent. The manager or owner usually stops by to check on everything, which is a nice touch. Everyone there is very friendly.

I visited South as part of a large group for business. The service was a bit slow, however only 2 waitresses were provided for a group of 25+; this is understandably but it was prescheduled with the restaurant. The food was good; nothing spectacular. If you're looking for "home style" southern food (I.e. Fried food, lots of carbs, etc) you won't be terribly disappointed.

This is a new upper end resturant that shows promise. The food quality and service we had was good, although I think they have a bit of refining (or practice) to do on their recipes.

I stopped in here for a weekday lunch with a friend who is a local when I was driving through Tupelo. Food itself was fine, and would probably get 3-4 stars. The service is the reason for the downgrade. SETTING: Fairly modern and classy interior (someone spent a lot of money on the upholstery here). Lots of fabrics makes the restaurant a little on the quiet side, which is nice. FOOD: I ordered the BBQ Shrimp Po Boy with Mac n Cheese. The Po Boy, was pretty good but nothing special. I found the BBQ sauce a little overpowering and was too watery for my tastes. Mac n Cheese (actually it was penne, but who's actually keeping score?) very cheesy and creamy, but delicious. Cornbread was good too. SERVICE: This is what turned an overall 3 star experience to a 2 star one. When we walked in there was no hostess at the front, and there was already a woman standing there waiting to be greeted. There were a few other parties in the restaurant, but they were by no means busy. We eventually were seated, and the waitress seemed to take forever to come take our order. I asked for cornbread for my side, but she told me that my dish already came with cornbread. However, when my meal came... no cornbread. Before I could say anything to her, she disappeared. When the manager (owner?) stopped by a little while later, I mentioned the cornbread issue to him, and they gladly brought it out. All of these seem like minor issues with the service, but when you add it all up, it makes for memorably poor service.

Not good. Food is bland and not what you would expect from the menu. Sides are small. I left hungry. Basically a bread po-boy.

Second time to visit and still not impressed. Slow service but nice staff. The sausage and cheese appetizer was good but all of the other food was bland. Chicken not seasoned before it was breaded and cooked and the 5 cheese Mac and cheese was a good texture but very bland for having all those cheeses. Not impressed.

What a great place to eat. Living on the Gulf Coast I've had my share of shrimp dishes. The Shrimp and Grits are the best I've ever had. My wife's chicken and waffles was also wonderful and Amber Rea, our server was great. South Restaurant is a must if you are in the Tupelo area.

The food itself CAN be very good. If you're in there at a slow point and order by yourself so that your food is cooked and delivered, it's very decent. But they always seem to have service issues and I've never eaten in a group without someone getting cold food. We had a pre-scheduled Christmas party outside of restaurant hours and almost everyone had an issue somewhere. I like the risotto and the shrimp and grits, but neither is what I'd consider outstanding.

Atmosphere is very high class and swanky. My wife and I chose the fritters as an appetizer, they were great. We both love shrimp and grits so we had to try it out and it didn't disappoint. The only downfall of our meal was the dessert. We got the big boy hot fudge cake and there was nothing big boy about it. The cake was extremely dry and it wasn't very big at all.

We ate at many restaurants in the Tupelo area. While this was one of the better restaurants, I have found that I have become accustomed to a very high standard of food being in Chicago. I will admit that I gave the restaurant an extra star for potential. Also, we had no problem with our bill or being overcharged. This is a really nice looking place. THEY ARE BRAND NEW. They have a couple kinks to work out. Fix the wobbly tables and please don't continue to do it with napkins. I noticed a couple of tables with napkins under one leg, but I'm picky. The service did take a long time, but I have found that this is standard for the area. The waiter also forgot to bring our martini, but was very apologetic and got it immediately once reminded. The refills on the soda were brought in a separate cup (for us to pour in on our own), which wouldn't be a problem but they were put down on the table in haste and spilled a half ounce on the table, twice. A fastidious person would have had a fit. Still, this is not representative of the establishment. The BLT sliders appetizer was amazing. So good in fact, my husband ordered a second order as his meal. The fried green tomatoes were also good. A suggestion, incorporate the biscuits from the BLT into more dishes. I had the stuffed chicken breast and it was just average (not stuffed with anything though?). My Dad got the chopped steak and it was tough. My mom got the catfish and thought that it was light and not at all fishy tasting. My son got the shrimp and ate all of them. My daughter got the buttered noodles and was also happy. We all found the corn bread to be a bit hard and didn't eat it. $4 is a little steep for a small side of corn (approximately 1/2 cup). Please keep in mind that we are from Chicago and with so many restaurants to choose from in a fairly short distance from us, eating out is somewhat a sport. This is one of the better Tupelo restaurants we visited. They are new and need to work out the kinks on the menu (pricing is a bit steep for some items), but I have a feeling they will be around a while.

Ate here 3/8/14. Food was good but the service was bad. My Daughter ordered a glass of wine and we ate appetizers no wine asked waitress still didn't get it. Ate dinner still no wine, told her to cancel wine and she said if they had poured it she would have to pay for it. I told her I really didn't care at that point. Had to ask for more tea more than once.

I visited with family and I like this place. Nice atmosphere and decor. The waiter was timely and gave a full range of options and recommendations. The price was very reasonable for a mid-scale American food restaurant in the area. I had the 12 oz ribeye and it had a good flavor and was cooked exactly to order and the food was delivered in a average timeframe of order. All in all I think it's a great place and I will definitely be back again.

In town on business and really did not want to go to a chain so I ended up at South upon the recommendation of a local. I had dinner at the bar and the service was good. My only complaint was that there was no option of a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc by the glass. The bartender recommended the grouper over the mahi so I took his suggestion and was not disappointed. Started with a house salad that was mostly iceberg and cherry tomatoes, somewhat blah except for the house made bleu cheese dressing and croutons. However, the homemade biscuit was delish. The grouper was served with a sausage and asparagus risotto which was very good. Fish was a bit salty but otherwise good. I would try this place again if I happen to be in town.

Avoid this place at all costs. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. These people will steal from you. Terrible service, average food, and they'll steal from you. Pay cash only or they'll overcharge your card after you leave
