I wanted to like this place more but the food was pretty average. We were quickly seated on a Sunday lunch time. The waitstaff was very helpful and friendly. The pot roast was good but just not memorable. The fried chicken was solid. Banana pudding was tasty. Quick service otherwise. Having eaten at quite a few meat and 3's in SC and GA, I think we had higher expectations that we should have had.

It's your basic meat and three for lunch, but the food is authentic Southern cooking and very well done. Wait staff is always friendly and helpful. I am local and eat here at least once a month. My favorites include the purple hull peas (cooked right with plenty of bacon grease), skillet cornbread and country fried steak. I'm not as much sold on their night menu items - they tend to be a bit more generic. A step above a Chili's, but not that big a step. It's genuine deep south cooking and a step above your Cracker Barrels and similar places. I'd definitely recommend lunch - not necessarily dinner. They publish daily menus at romies.net/menus so you can see if you like what's being served.

We came here on a Saturday night around 8pm. The outdoor area was very crowded and too loud for my liking but the inside area had immediate seating and was quieter. We were seated and our drink orders taken immediately. I had margarita on the rocks and my husband had sweet tea. The margarita was fabulous - honestly one of the best I have ever had. The sweet tea was great - true southern sweet tea. Our orders were taken quickly and the food was brought out very quickly as well. I had the old school rib eye sandwich and it was cooked perfectly. My husband had the daily special, pork tenderloin, and it was very good as well. I really enjoyed this place and highly recommend it. Don't let the gravel parking lot and loud outdoor area scare you away - it's definitely one of the best places in town.

It's 9:20. Our reservations were for 7:30 and we still have not received food yet or an apology for our reservation being delayed an hour. I'm sure the food is good but by the time I get it I surely won't care anymore. Came for the crawfish but they are out Sweet tea is not very sweet and tea is very weak. Asked for lemon in my tea and haven't seen it yet. My salad just came so I'll see how that goes. It's good not great. May check this off. It's too bad because I prefer to eat in a local restaurant as opposed to the numerous box chains here but we would have been better off going to longhorns.

Amazing services. Melody is a fabulous waitress. The bbq pulled pork was great as was the catfish sandwich my husband enjoyed. We came at 4:00 and missed the plate lunch and southern vegetables. Very sad. We will plan on traveling through again for lunch. We shared the bourbon pecan pie bread pudding. It was HUGE. The atmosphere was really clean and was great. The negative reviews on the interior were way off base. The bathrooms were super clean and whimsical. Thanks for a great experience for our first family meal on vacation. It's lettuce and fruit from here!

My wife and I had drinks and an appetizer on the patio while live music was going on. Atmosphere is great and the appetizer (a crayfish dip of some sort) was hearty and reminiscent of New Orleans seafood dishes. We'll come back for more live music and a meal. Wait staff were all great.

We really enjoyed our first visit. Food was delicious and portions were ample. The bread was very good - loved the strawberry butter. The homemade ranch dressing was excellent. I did not like the greens but server replaced them with green beans - much better choice. We will definitely come again when we are in the area.

The steak was divine!!! I had the steak and mashed potatoes with Mac and cheese and everything I had was delicious. Steak was quite fatty, but the taste was great. Side items were good as well. Wife had the Reuben sandwich and it was good as well. Great atmosphere. Live music outside on weekends. We'll be back.

I eat here for lunch about once a week. It is always very good and has good portions. They have daily meat and 3 specials, check those out. I love the pancake cornbread it is AMAZING!!! They have the option to sit inside or out, they have room for the largest or smallest groups. We regularly have department lunches with 10-15 people. The service is always good and so is the food.

Well, perhaps it's not a "fair fight". After all, I have traveled extensively. Particularly through the South. And, I have been to what most would agree is the best Southern dining institution in the world, Arnold's Country Kitchen in Nashville, TN. But, if I'm being honest, Romie's was not that great. Don't get me wrong. I wanted it to be amazing. I really did. After all, everyone probably enjoys being "in the know" about the "hidden gems" scattered along the highways and byways of America. Hence, YELP. Right? And Romie's looked promising from the road. Great reviews, too. Should have been a winner. But....it seems to take more than an old fashioned Southern style name and sign to live up to the image Romie's projected outside. First: The Atmosphere. The name made me think I had found an old country store that had , over the years, started serving Plate Lunches, and had slowly built a reputation with the locals, gradually morphing into a cafe. I've been to a few of these in the South, and I love 'em when they're done right. (For example: Puckett's Grocery in Leiper's Fork, TN and The Old Country Store in Lorman, MS) BUT Romie's, regardless of whatever history the building may have, feels more like the multi purpose room at an Elks Lodge than a Southern institution. Outdated wood paneling on the walls, dusty plastic flowers on the table, low ceilings all combine to make you feel like you're at a non profit fundraiser, not a charming backroads cafe. The food was not bad. By that, I mean that it was okay...average. I ordered the Chicken Spaghetti. Well....Mehh.......I guess. Nothing to rave about. Nothing to return for. Certainly not the "specialty" dish that the waitress sold me on. The "iced" fruit tea would have probably been better cold, rather than lukewarm. I left disappointed, wishing I had just gone to Lost Pizza again. Now THAT'S a great local find ! I do wonder what dinner is like at Romie's . I went for lunch. Maybe a steak at night would leave me with a better impression. But when I saw the prices and thought about how disappointing lunch was, I felt like it wasn't worth the risk. I'll probably just go to Lost Pizza.

Never had bad service or bad food here. Only place in town that I know of that serves fried oysters and they are willing to make special orders of you don't see what you want on the menu.

Nice little soul food place. Try the meat and three and be sure to get the green beans! For dessert, you have to try the banana pudding.

First let me yelp about the family eating on the patio. Your kids really aren't all that cute and your misbehaved spawn ruined what had potential to be a really great dinner. You made me mad. You were oblivious to the harm they could have gotten into or the noise and aggravation that your children provided. Keep em at home if you don't want to watch them and out of my sight too. You owe the whole restaurant an apology. Anyway.......I can't blame Romie's. Their food was really good. The portions were huge. The Oyster Po Boy and the sides were incredible. They have a great selection of sides and the ones I chose, onion rings and green beans wrapped in bacon were really fresh and tasted home made. Ok. I feel better now, and full. I'll go back to Romie's

GREAT food! GREAT atmosphere! And our waitress, Amanda is "the best waitress ever". There was live music the night we were there. Very much looking forward to going back.

While visiting Tupelo we were hoping to try more of the famous southern cuisine. Romie's Grocery serves some classic southern dishes in a very pleasant atmosphere. The waitress suggested some hand-breaded mozzarella balls as an appetizer. I expected something greasy, but was well surprised how enjoyable it turned out to be. The pan seared catfish and fried chicken both went down very well. Had a real home cooked feel to it. Unfortunately no room for dessert :)

Wonderful southern for at a reasonable price. Neat old grocery store converted to a resturant. When the weather permits we prefer the porch. Great place for lunch too!

Gimme gimme some greasy deep fried soul food! In the event you find yourself having a heart attack after your meal, a hospital is conveniently located 5 blocks down the road. - Deep fried catfish - good quality fish, soft and melty, bread-crust was crusty and light in flavors - Deep fried green tomatoes - authentic sh*t, very good - Purple Hull peas - tasty but just remember to roll down your windows an hr after your meal, poison gas may be emitted... - Corn salad - ok * 1 meat item + 3 sides + corn bread = $6.95, portions so large this could feed 3 people! Y'all should get some!!! (said w/ southern accent)

I've eaten there several times, including today. Food is good, and you get a lot for the money. Good southern cooking, with an occassional twist. Great service. Today I had the chicken spaghetti, sweet potato fries (fresh cut of course), green beans, slaw, and the cornbread (which really looked like a huge hoe cake). All was good, especially the fries. I was expecting a tomato-based sauce on the spaghetti, but it was more like a rich cream of chicken noodle soup with peas - and, the peas added an unexpectedly enjoyable layer of flavor to it. The slaw had a hit of sweetness and a touch of vinegar and was great.

Amazing customer service!!!! We stopped by on a Sunday and times it perfectly. The lunch crowd hit shortly after we arrived but they continued on with their great service. We all had the meat & 3 vegetables (lots of food). I had fried chicken, purple hull peas, green beans, fried green tomatoes, & cornbread. My husband ordered pot roast, mashed potatoes w/gravy, peas, & beans. The food was all very good except the green beans were waaaaay beyond too salty. They had a good taste just to overpowering salty taste. The fried chicken batter had a lil extra salt as well as the fried green tomatoes. That's the only reason I didn't give 5 stars. Will definitely stop in again and try them out if ever back in the area. I didn't see what was on their regular menu but Sunday was good ole southern country cooking. Very neat little place to stop in and check out if in the area or passing thru like we were!!!! It was $9 for the meat & vegetable plate and $7.75 for a vegetable plate which includes 4 veggies (price does not include drink)

Around lunch time, I just happened to be passing by Romie's on my way to a bike shop, so after my stop, I doubled back to join the cars that were spilling out of Romie's parking lot. The plate lunch was $6.95 and included a meat and 3 veggies. Everything tasted fresh. The purple hull peas were some of the best I've had at a restaurant. Fried squash was coated in corn meal and was rather tasty. The cornbread was so-so, but I'm used to my mom's, which everyone who's had it agrees is the best on the planet. If you're in Tupelo and have a hankerin' for good ole Southern food, Romie's is a good choice. I shall return!

Loved the food. Simple, but expertly cooked and seasoned. Must have the shrimp and grits. Definitely worth a stop if you're traveling through Tupelo.

LOVE THIS PLACE! Great food in a casual atmosphere, reasonable prices. The oysters rockefeller were a great appetizer. My only beef is that they aren't open everynight.

Spectacular meat and veggies style restaurant. First time visit at Romie's while traveling through town to Memphis. We had the Friday special of Chicken Fingers & Fried Catfish. Both very tasty with homemade ranch dressing and tartar sauce. Sides were potatoes and onions (shoestring fries with sautéed oninons) green beans, fried green tomatoes, cucumber and tomato salad, and deviled eggs. Casual and homey environment. Laid back but efficient service. Reminded me of Sunday family style lunches at my Granny's house. Nice find.

While traveling from New Orleans to Nashville by way of the Nachez trace, I stopped in Tupelo at sunset for gas and a quick bite. I believe I was looking for Romie's without knowing where or what it was or if it even existed - but when I came across it on a little side street I knew I had to stop. I parked the bike and walked up, and could hear dinner sounds coming from the other side of the fence. They sat me on the patio and I was surrounded by people who all seemed to know each other somehow, speaking with that southern accent, enjoying the place, the food, each other. I ordered the ribeye and the waitress was friendly and made a great suggestion with the bacon-wrapped green beans. And just as I'm enjoying all this and thinking things can't get much better, a great little cover band sets up in the corner of the patio and plays a couple of songs that make me smile so big I must have looked like a fool, but a content fool to be sure. And it all makes me feel glad to be alive and just stop to savor a very good moment, and watching the sunset wash the place in a warm orange glow I'm sitting there thinking "God, if I die tonight this has been a perfect last meal." And later that night, when I almost did die, alone on my motorcycle on the Nachez trace with the fog over the road and the eyes in the swamps and the full moon overhead, trying to make it to Nashville by 3am, and I'm in the middle of nowhere in the swamps of arkansas and the first light I see for fifty miles is a haunted looking church that seems to have sprouted from the forest itself, and there's a sign on it that says 'Your sin will take you further than you ever thought you'd go." I was thinking how I shouldn't have thought that about the last supper, and I swore off all kinds of things and promised I'd be better, if only I could make it back to civilization alive, and with all my heart I wished I were still on the patio at Romie's Grocer...

Love the atmosphere and food! They have live music on the weekend nights. Daily lunch specials ate inexpensive and to die for! Yum!! Sometimes service at night will be slow but this is a place where you just slow down and enjoy the night!

Food was good...a little pricey for what you get. The deviled eggs are $1/egg half. They were not that special. Our waitress was excruciatingly slow. The others on the wait staff were quick, just not ours.

Very good southern food. The lemon crunch was excellent. On a southern road trip we enjoyed sampling southern food and Romies was the best.
