Mahdu, the owner, and his family are incredible. I live in California and come to Oxford twice a year for work. This is always a staple, and I did not care for Indian food before I was introduced to this restaurant. Now I can't find one nearly as good in Northern California. If you like spice give it a go! The Cauliflower and Spinach are amazing dishes.

Nice flavor depth, not all that spicy so let them know if you like it a little hotter. The waitress suggested a curry to go with the drier tandoori mixed grill, and we went with one of my favorites, lamb korma. Even the simple raiata was flavorful, with just the right amount of flavoring.

Food: Fantastic food, can make as mild as you like or hot. Chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, and naan are amazing. It's also BYOB w a one time charge per glass Service: There short staffed which leads to slow service, but this is anywhere when that's the case but if I do go to dine in I enjoy myself and am not in a hurry. Usually best to do take out. There always very nice. Wish they offered small or medium options so you could try more dishes! Eat here 2-3 times a month! Great food!

First of all, I have been searching for a great Indian cuisine place all over Mississippi and I think I finally found it! I ordered the lamb curry with sweet tea, both were delicious. They have the menu to where you can choose your spice level from mild to extra spicy, I got the spicy option. Very flavorful and service wasn't as bad as I thought it would be based on the other reviews here.

This is one of the places that I really miss about in Mississippi. I am living in Memphis now and nowhere here comes close to the taste of indian at this restaurant. The Korma and the Chicken Curry, Chicken Tikka Masala is the bomb! The inside service at this restaurant is not the best. This is one of those places that you go for take out and you will not be disappointed as that seems where all the issues I had with it was and with the other reviewers.

Maharaja is great for take-out! I rarely eat inside the restaurant, but I order take-out from there whenever possible. The food is delicious and really turned me on to Indian cuisine. My favorites are the Mutter Paneer, Palak Paneer, and Lamb Rogan Josh. They will prepare your food mild, medium, or spicy - I am a big fan of spicy foods, and the medium is too spicy even for me at times, so lovers of spicy foods should enjoy Maharaja. Their samosas are wonderful, as is the sauce that comes with them, and so is their Naan bread. Their rice is fragrant and flavorful, too. The employees are very polite and always address me so nicely when I call in to place an order. I like to order a large size portion ($2 more than the regular size) on the weekend, and I am able to eat on that by myself for 2 days normally. I don't think this place is as popular as it should be, so I felt compelled to give it a good review on Yelp. It is one of the hidden gems of Oxford, in my opinion.

I have had quite a bit of Indian food in my life, and Maharaja can compete with the best of the best. I love Palak Paneer (a vegetarian spinach and indian cheese dish), and Maharaja's may just be the best I have ever had. On the menu it compares paneer to cottage cheese, it is not similar to cottage cheese at all. I would say it has the texture of tofu but tastes like mozzarella cheese. They make it fresh in house and it is incredible. My friends with a "whiter" palate really like the chicken tikka masala, it is a tomato based dish, and when you order it mild, it can really appeal to anyone. Plus their rice is amazing! If you have never had Indian food before, Maharaja is a great place to start.

I love Indian cuisine so much but the three times I have gone have been disappointing because we sat there starving for and hour and a half when there were only 2 other tables filled in the restaurant. It's good if you have time to wait.

Recently starting coming here after being introduced by some friends less than a year ago, and I am hooked! The service is friendly and food is delicious, but I definitely agree that the atmosphere has some to be desired. It is a tidy and sparse place with little decorations and music coming from a TV in the corner that has Indian music videos playing the entire time you are there, but the food will make up for the loss in ambiance! My favorite thing here is the aloo gobi. I actually request that they add chicken and green peas in with it, and it is absolutely delicious! Sometimes I will order it to-go multiple times a week... It is THAT good! And you can't forget the garlic naan! Yum!! Word to the wise: We actually found that if you call in a to-go order and you do not specify the size of the order, they will automatically make/charge you for the larger order size. I find that the larger size may actually feed 2 people, so make sure to tell them what size you want!

We came here for a late lunch, and the service left a lot to be desired! We were the only ones in the restaurant and the waiter didn't seem terribly worried about getting drinks or taking our order. The food was nice, but not really anything to write home about.

I went here for the first time yesterday to get takeout. The decor leaves a lot ot be desired as does the whole set up as far as atmosphere. I was kind of taken aback that they also have an OEC in the same location. I wanted indian but I felt that gentleman taking my order wanted me to order Japanese. It is a bit pricey, but really no more expensive than other indian restaurants you will go to. The spices are quite expensive which means the dishes will be and the portions smaller than with other type of cheaper made foods. We ordered the Chicken Curry, Chicken Korma, and the Palak Paneer and Onion Naan. My husband said that the chicken curry tasted better than other indian restaurants we had been too. He said it contained more spices and wasn't bland at all. The Chicken Korma is really good. I ordered spicy but it was not too spicy. The Palak Paneer, however, was way too spicy for me. It took away the flavor of the ingredients. I would not bother ordering the Naan. In reality, it is just pita bread that has been grilled and not authentic at all. I wish they had a buffet as that gives you a chance to try a lot of different dishes without spending an arm and a leg. I have to say that it was ok, overall, but I am sure a lot of the dishes are hit and miss.

Used to have a buffet, doesn't now. Chicken dishes don't use tandoori oven nor actual chicken parts. Instead, chunks of chicken with Indian flavored sauces on top. Disappointed in the only Indian place in Oxford.

We have eaten here several times. It is always good. Atmosphere is not a plus except for the Indian Music Videos which are highly entertaining to watch. Appetizers: we love the chick pea salad, the Ghobi Manchurian (yum) and Chicken 65 is interesting. Entrees: lamb curry is so tender. We had a great chicken dish in a cashew sauce but can't remember the name. Simple presentation. Excellent service. Clean. We like the Kingfisher beer. Not too crazy about the Indian Hot Tea. The place is in a strip shopping center next to Walmart off of Jackson Avenue. Again, not much on atmosphere but the music and video make up for it! We look forward to our return!

I have to say that I love Maharaja. The owner is a lovely person as is the cook and the sole waitress. It definitely takes time if you decide to eat in and take out should also be given about 30mins. before you leave to pick it up. I know that it's not the most authentic/special Indian restaurant in the world but the majority of the dishes on the menu are great. They are exceptionally good with cream-based sauces (think palak paneer, chicken tikka masala, aloo gobi). They also have really great samosas and gobi manchuria (chickpea flour coated, fried cauliflower in a oily chili sauce :) ). The chef's special, which isn't on the menu, is basically whatever the chef feels like cooking you for lunch. It's an awesome value with three small main course portion, a side vegetable dish portion, naan, rice, dessert, and raitha!! I've never had anything that I didn't like when I ordered this special. Otherwise, stay away from most of the chicken dishes (jalfreizi, chili, vindaloo)...I've had some, let's say, not fresh chicken in these dishes before.
