Great local bar with friendly owner and regulars. Great plate lunches and very reasonable prices on menu offerings. They have a good beer selection with the typical domestics and several craft choices. One of the few places you can find Back Forty's Freckle Belly on tap.

Loved going to happy hour here back when it was in the same building as the Rouge. It was a perfect, tiny, cramped bar area that was great for a drink. I must admit I'd had only been twice in a number of years, I can't really recall the first time going since the move, but the second time was OK. Maybe a 3 star rating back then, but I was back today and it just blew me away. The fried chicken lunch special with turnip greens and slaw was top notch. Then, there was the Cheddar biscuit that I had planned on not eating (watching those carbs a bit), but then I tired it and couldn't put it down. This was one of the best lunches I have had in quite a while. We are going to be adding this to the list of places we will be going back to in the near future. I can't vouch for dinner, as I have never been, nor can I say if the bar is all it used to be, but if you want a darn good lunch, with nice people (that keep your cup full!), for around 10 bucks, this is it.

We were staying at a motel nearby and wanted some simple, non-chain food. Scrooge's seemed to be the only thing near by that would fit the bill. The service was friendly and effective, the food was good and reasonably priced. It was exactly what we were looking for.

Arrived at Scrooges by chance having pulled off the nearby Interstate. Found the restaurant packed with the local Sunday afternoon dinner crowd. We placed our order as I anticipated slow service, due to a large table of 12 right next to us. Our beverages came all most immediately followed quickly by our catfish dinners. The service was remarkable. No server came anywhere near our table without doing something to make our meal more enjoyable.

This was a strange experience. First off, if you're not careful, you'll miss the place. It's behind a run down former restaurant of some kind. When you walk in, you wouldn't know it, but the bar area is through another door straight ahead - completely unmarked. The restaurant area is to the right. Freshly painted, except for one soiled ceiling tile. The place looks temporary, not like a restaurant that has been in business for some time. It's a Tuesday night, but I'm only the second table occupied, so as soon as the table of 7 leaves, it's just me. I had the Redfish special (topped with an unappetizing crawfish sauce), grilled lemon spinach (which was good), grilled new potatoes (OK) and hush puppies (my choice over Italian bread or cornbread). Overall, it was okay, but I only finished the spinach and I'm usually a member of the clean plate award. They did have a couple of craft brews on special for $2. A Lazy Magnolia Reb Ale and a Velvet Rooster Belgian Style Tripel.

In addition to their normal menu, at lunch Scrooges offers a Meat and Two vegetable Blue Plate Special. The Daily Specials listed vary with a selection from 4-5 meats, 12+ vegetables! and three breads. My favorite, available every day, is the fried chicken breast (skinless and boneless) it has a crisp, tasty batter covering a large, tender juicy breast; it's also available grilled. The green beans and potato salad are excellent. On Thursday you can get their sweet potato casserole, it's worth a try! On the regular menu their hamburgers, red beans and rice, and fried catfish are quite good. Their pecan cobbler with a scoop of vanilla ice cream is hard to resist. There is a full service bar with a good selection of craft beers available too.

As an out of tower solo for the night I was looking for somewhere for dinner and a little reading. The atmosphere was good but the food was terrible. LOTS of salt & pepper couldn't even help the "chicken angel" swimming in a tasteless white sauce. Oh we'll I know not to return on my next stop over in Jackson...

I have always had terrific service here. Portion sizes are nice. Great fried oysters WHEN they have them! Good french fries and chicken livers. Have tried most of the side dishes and they were quite good. Nachos are a bit oddly arranged and quite soggy. Avoid the tomato aspic unless you want Worchestershire sauce aspic with a little tomato.

Ate there today and pork chop was dry and flavorless, everything needed salt and pepper and waited for a drink to long.
