Absolutely wonderful every time I dine here. I tried the PB&J (pork belly, pepper jam and boiled peanuts appetizer) by recommendation, and it was one of my favorite dishes yet. Definitely a worthwhile try.

Came for lunch over the weekend. It's located in a former school, so takes you back to the day. The decor was well done and inviting. Staff was nice and pleasant. I got the oyster stew, definitely on the creamy side of broths if that's what you want to call it. I got the shrimp Po boy, it was ok. Could have been with out the pickles on top of it. The s'more cake for dessert was good, but rich. Definitely something more for 2 people.

The best oysters I have ever had in my life, and will ever have, did not come from here. The second best oysters, however, came from Saltine. Here is the moral of this review: If you like oysters, check this place out. If you are curious about oysters, this is a great place to get your feet (or tongue) wet. If you detest oysters, I recommend you not go to an oyster restaurant, though they do have other things on the menu. The main thing to discuss is, of course, the oysters. They are very good. They always have a small selection of them and post the prices on a blackboard by the door. The guys behind the counter are not only professional oyster shuckers but they have well developed oyster palates. If you are curious about the differences in the oysters (relevant when you are ordering a dozen and the price can vary several dollars between them!) these guys will steer you in the right direction. You can get a couple of sauces with the oysters if you're into that, from your standard cocktail sauces and hot sauces to fresh horseradish and a house made malt vinegar. The rest of the menu is a small, but tasty. Nothing really stands out too much though. If it were that menu alone, this place would get a perfectly fine three star rating. Saltine has one of the best selections of beer I have seen in Jackson. If you are hanging out there in the afternoon, at some point you will see them pulling together some sort of punch for happy hour. They just make a big bowl of whatever they feel like and serve it until it runs out. It is a great concept, but introduces a little uncertainty risk into your afternoon. $3 gets you a Miller High Life and an oyster - basically, never order a High Life without picking up that free oyster. The atmosphere is nice, and there is outdoor seating that is well shaded as the sun goes down - the sun might be a little too direct for a summer lunchtime though. MUST HAVE DISHES IN JACKSON - The Gulf Oysters make this list. There were some hiccups when they first opened, but if you go during oyster season (months ending in an R, or, more liberally, containing an R) you're basically guaranteed fresh, delicious, as local as possible oysters. Settle yourself in during the oyster happy hour and keep them coming. Their house made vinegar is a really nice touch.

I have only had the pleasure of eating here a few times, but let me tell you...I have never been so impressed in a new Jackson restaurant before. You literally can't go wrong with anything from the menu here! I was even in love with their fries (which are truly amazing). They have a very well stocked bar and usually have a delicious house punch available for a deal of a price. While I'm not a huge fan of oysters, I have heard from maaaany people that Saltine is the best place around for oysters. Definitely go eat here!
(5)Flory W.
Not a lot of selection, but interesting that you don't find in another part of the country. They're interesting things like 'pea tendrils', lobster rolls very tasty. I love the homemade chips that came with the dish. The trout is OK, I didn't care for the blackened skin, nor the cream sauce. I can stand ice cream, which is made mostly of cream, but not this CREAM. I have to transfer my fish and some peas to a smaller plate, because it was drowning with cream. It's open on a Sunday, when most are close after church! The server was very friendly!
(3)Natasha W.
Great place! Went for late lunch, almost had the place to ourselves. Staff was great and food was yum. Sounds like they have live music too. I need to check it out again soon!!
(4)Torey C.
I've been to Saltine a few times now, so it's finally time to review it. I have to say, every time I go it gets better and better. Originally I went to the soft open (where slow service is to be expected) and the food was just average. But in the following months I haven't had a bad bite of food. The catfish and chip is killer and the PB&J is delicious (though I'm not sold on the idea of boiled peanuts yet). Also the bar is one of the best in Jackson for a good drink after work.
(4)Richard D.
Great place for oysters! They have a wide variety of them from all parts of the country! Try a few from different places to see what your palate likes. The best part is the MASSIVE beer selection; both local and major brands! Will definitely be going back!
(5)Donny B.
Saltine has an excellent craft beer selection on draft, and the Happy Hour prices are the best. They offer 7 oz pours of draft beer, also. The bartenders know their craft beer and are happy to offer a sample. If you're not into seafood, the Roast Beef Po-Boy and the Saltine Burger are excellent, as are the french fries.
(5)Andrew A.
One of my favorite spots! A weekly visit would totally be justified. Sometimes the wait is due to an influx of customers and patrons. That means it's a great spot. Rotating oysters from all over the world and fantastic seafood. So much more than just a seafood place. Great beer selection with all the locals and a daily Randall. A+
(5)Jamie S.
Loved it! The food was awesome and the service was great. We had the calamari for an appetizer which was amazing! Our entrees and also the dessert were also perfect. Ask for Lauren as a server if you ever visit, she was very knowledgeable about the menu and was very attentive. Will definitely be back!
(5)Syn C.
Sat at the oyster bar. Excellent service. Made it for the happy hour oysters (4-6 pm). Gulf, Bluepoint, and the Grand Pearl were great, but it was the homemade cocktail sauce that stole the show for me. Great smokey flavor with just the right amount of heat. Ordered the half kale salad and two Po Bao as well. Both equally delicious. Will be back for sure.
(5)Teresa K.
This was really a bad experience. I had high hopes but the service was slow, no one knew the specials, waiters walked around like we weren't there. Then the food came. Average at best. The price was outrageous (of course they over billed us). Once we got that resolved it took forever to get the bill. $60 for apps and drinks!!! Will not go back. Also, the toilets in the restroom were filthy!!
(1)Jen H.
So pleased with this local gem!!! The service was terrific. I loved the hush puppies appetizer. Everything on the menu was unique and delicious; my husband had the seafood sausage, something I've never even heard of elsewhere! The lobster roll was great but probably a little overpriced. However, dessert was the highlight of the meal. Ask for the banoffee. It was AMAZING!!!
(5)Julie M.
Love Saltine! Such a great addition to Jackson. The food is FANTASTIC and the atmosphere is like none other around here. 2 thumbs up!!
(5)Ryan K.
Great food, great beer, great people, great atmosphere!!! Unfortunately, I came to Saltine for the first time after eating at another local spot so I was not hungry. I did however have to try a few things because they just sounded amazing. I went to have a few beers which were all fantastic and ordered the skillet cornbread which was very good, came out sizzling in its personal size iron skillet. I also ordered the shrimp and lobster spring rolls which were on a separate menu, these were amazing as well and I could've eaten about a dozen. I will be coming back to Saltine hungry and will provide a better review.
(5)Ann M.
Oh my YUM!!!! From small plates to desserts and drinks, oysters to speciality po-boys- this place has it all! I'd recommend any of the wood fired oysters. Truly delectable. If oysters aren't your thing- NO WORRIES! The catfish and chips are on point. Don't forget to start out with something that'll really get your taste buds pumped- try the gravy fries or the cornbread. I've really enjoyed the drinks and desserts as well. The speciality bacon blondie sundae was AMAZING, but I must say the banana pudding steals the show in my book. Definitely a must try place in Jackson! They always leave me wanting to come back for more!
(5)Jeana S.
Oh Saltine, how do I love thee? Let me Yelp the ways! This is my favorite restaurant in all of Fondren! I wasn't a big fan of Oysters until I had the Gulf Coast oysters here. They came on a bed of ice and two dipping sauces: the usual cocktail and vinegar. Nothing exceptional here until you try one. The quality is so fresh and delicious! I've never been let down by anything on the menu here! I also love all the events at Saltine. We attended May the Fourth Be With You where they had special Star Wars themed drinks and meals. They even had the 501st there which for those who don't know is a professional Star Wars cosplay group with incredibly well made costumes! At one point Boba Fett was serving food and the Storm Troopers were managing the DJ booth! The decor is beautiful and relaxed. The staff is great. I have zero complaints!
(5)Linell B.
I've been to Saltine twice and enjoyed it both times. The location and environment are very cool and make the experience more fun. But I mostly just really like the food. In my last visit I got the Nashville hot chicken, which is something I've really wanted to try for a while now. I can't speak to the authenticity compared to actual hot chicken in Nashville, but I can say that my plate was positively delicious. Shredded pickles over chicken strips on top of white bread with ranch drizzled on top of the whole shebang. I'm a fan of spicy food and this was perfect for me. It wasn't just chicken tenders covered in Tabasco, but it also _was_ spicy. If I got it again I'd probably ask for the ranch to be on the side. I also got a plate or oysters which were great.
(5)Kayla C.
I love saltine and find myself eating here almost weekly. For appetizers I would recommend the rye pretzel or skillet cornbread. There's just something great about cornbread coming from a skillet. I've tried many of the menu items but the two things I can't get over are the kale salad and the avocado toast. They are to die for! The kale salad has a delicious dressing with pickled onions and olives, and the avocado toast has crab, avocado, and green with a squeeze of lemon. I so enjoy the variety of oysters they have raw and fried. And of course dessert. The best, in my opinion, is the banoffee- banana + coffee. Yes, it's as good as it sounds. Or of chocolate is more your thing, the s'mores cake. So huge. So rich. They have a nice beer section and offer half pints. One special drink they have is a daily punch. Always a good choice! Those have two sizes as well. The thing I find most special about Saltine is their events. I recently went to a guest dinner where a chef from San Diego came and served us a 6 course meal. They also started a Monday night Ramen Night which I can't wait to try!
(5)Miles A.
Amazing food, friendliest service ever, and relatively quick service! We had Julian as our waitress and she was the sweetest thing ever! Couldn't recommend this place enough! And of course the Oysters are so choice!
(5)Blue A.
This place is inside of an old school - how awesome is that?! It was a little nostalgic when I went to wash my hands in the bathroom - it made me feel like I was in elementary school. The floor is made up of old, thin wooden boards...theres pipes running across the roof in the hallway - this place is just overall awesome. Then you throw in some great seafood, AWESOME service and great beer selection and we've got a winner! PO' BAO $3 each - Steamed bun, fried oyster, creole aioli, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle Do you know, I have never had a fried oyster? These were delicious! SKILLET CORNBREAD $6 Jalapeno, green onion, cheddar ADD: oysters $3 bacon $2 --- Didn't add anything to it. Unfortunately this one fell a little flat for me. There wasn't anything too mind blowing about it - so while it was "ok" cornbread, I don't think I'd order it again. PB&J $15 Crispy pork belly, pepper jelly, boiled peanuts - THIS. WAS. AMAZING. I'd order this again - I'd probably order 2 of these! I shared the dish - it has 5 or 6 pieces of Pork Belly - really recommend this one! CRAB AND AVOCADO TOAST $11 Living lettuce, citrus vinaigrette, charred sourdough Was hot...wasn't expecting that. Wish it was cold...It was alright, but I guess I was a little turned off by it being a warm dish. So 2 dishes were home run and 2 dishes were so-so....why 4 stars? There's so much more that goes into the experience....let's start with the service. From the second we walked in we were greeted with smiles. Our server was just as friendly as the hostesses. She mentioned it was her first week - and honestly I couldn't tell, she was great! When we asked if she recommended adding oysters or bacon to the cornbread - she said she liked hers plain - I really liked that because usually servers will try to upcharge you - she kept it real and that went a hell of a long way for me. Then there's the beer selection - ton of taps about 30? I drank a crisp local blonde that went great with my meal. I had my eye on a TON of the options, but kept it at just one drink.....wouldn't mind coming back for some pork belly and brews though....might have to next visit!

My husband and I love Saltine. We've been here many times and the service and food is always excellent. We went this past Monday for ramen night and the special menu was great because it featured food items that you cannot find anywhere in Jackson. It's refreshing to see the chef and kitchen creating new recipes and trying new things. The Nashville hot oysters and fantastic, but I would recommend getting the sauce on the side because it really hot. I love all the oysters they feature, the long list of beers on tap, and how they focus on local, fresh, ingredients! I highly recommend Saltine!
(5)Kenneth C.
The PB&J was insane! Pork Belly with boiled peanuts and a pepper jelly sauce - come on, really? One one the best things I have ever eaten. Their oysters are great and the dip paired with olives pickled onions and pepper gives it a nice balance. Great place! Oh yeah! They have excellent Ramen specials on Monday nights! My wife is from Hawaii and is very happy about that.

This is one of my favorite recent additions to the Fondren restaurant scene, for sure! If you're looking for fresh, delicious oysters, Saltine is your go-to spot here in Jackson. The oyster happy hour cannot be beat, and even if you go during regular hours, the prices are always reasonable and the selection is always fantastic! I'm not a *huge* oyster person, though, I must admit. I hit up Saltine for some of their other foodie options. The po'bao is a truly delicious appetizer. Make sure you order plenty for the whole table! Like you might expect from a place that specializes in oysters, the seafood here is definitely a strength. All the po-boys and seafood based dishes are excellently made and prepared. I've tried both the redfish as well as the shrimp, and they were both killer good. If you're not a seafoody person, you're not out of luck at Saltine. Their "PB&J," which is a pork belly dish with pepper jelly and peanuts is one of the most unique and also most incredible things I've ever eaten! It deserves a spot on your "Gotta Try It" list! Their burger is also really good and comes with a super yummy creole aioli. The atmosphere of Saltine is super chill. Located inside Duling Hall, which used to be a school, it's got tall ceilings and a casual, hip vibe. There's lots of booth seating as well as some bigger tables for larger groups and plenty of seating at the bar as well. They've also got one of the nicest patios in town, which is great for these lovely warm nights we've got almost year-round here. Since Saltine's smack-dab in the middle of downtown Fondren, this is a great place to start almost any super fun night out on the town. One of the biggest draws to Saltine, for me, is the beer selection. If not the best, it's by far one of the best beer selections in town. With a huge combination of everything from local craft beers to imports to domestics, you'd be hard pressed to stay thirsty at Saltine. They're often hosting really cool beer related events, so keep an eye on their Twitter or Facebook and you'll probably find something super fun to do and something really amazing to drink!
(5)Amy S.
Amazing little place! We got the laffite wood fire grilled oysters. Wonderful! We also ordered the skillet cornbread. It was a little lacking since it was supposed to have bacon and jalapeños in it. Didn't see or taste either. We shared the low country boil. Well worth the wait. Flavor was amazing! If youare in Jackson and craving fresh seafood and nice atmosphere, give this place a try. You will not be disappointed. And if you like root beer, they have one they serve with alcohol but you will never know it. It is out of this world good!!
(5)Jonna B.
Firstly, I love Duling Hall and what I love even more is that our menus at Saltine were in school folders. It added a nice touch! The cocktails = amazing. The oysters (wood-fired with citrus, garlic, butter) = even better. I ordered the Saltine Burger, because I had been craving a burger all day. The components of the burger were done well, even the Creole Mayo (and I'm not a huge mayo fan). I wish the burger could've been cooked at a medium to medium-rare temperature instead of medium-well to well-done, but that's a personal preference. I recommend it to anyone looking for a nice meal in a nifty area of Jackson!
(4)Gene G.
I have eaten here several times. The food is not bad, but just not worth the price. The decor is very nice and the staff is always pleasant. Last time i had the fried spicy chicken and honestly Popeyes is better. Like I said not bad. But overpriced.
(3)Sarah S.
one word: delicious!! the wood grilled oysters are a gift from God and the low country boil and gulf shrimp poboy made us tear up it was so good. I so recommend this place!
(5)daphne r.
I never ever order cooked oysters when raw is on the menu but o had to try their specialty - the Lafitte. Wood fired- crawfish tails palm and bacon. It sounds like they destroying the oyster but TRUST ME THEY ARE NOT. Also outstanding: homemade ravioli. And the vibe - classy but super casual. A must try in Jackson in an old school building!
(5)Tricia R.
I had heard so much about how great this place is. I don't eat oysters and that must be the good stuff behind the hype. I tried the trout and was very disappointed in the lack of flavor. The side options were limited. I really didn't want French fries, but they were the best part. The waiter lacked knowledge of menu items. Disappointed!!
(2)Cherry D.
Sat at the oyster bar for happy hour oysters from 4-6pm. Ordered 3 dozen. Came with the best cocktail sauce I've ever tasted, had a hint of roasted red peppers. Amazing. The oyster po bao was also delicious, lightly battered oyster with Dijon mustard on a steamed buns. Had to order another one since the first one was eaten in two bites. The kale salad was also good, made with baby kale and also had kalmata olives. Our waiter was on point. Busy day during fondrens first Thursday, but she still managed to give us awesome service. Will be back for sure and bring everyone else who visits me to this place.
(5)Aaron Ray A.
My first visit started off horrible. I have never and I mean never been treated so rudely by anyone at a restaurant but the hostess outdid herself. The good news was that the extremely nice waiter saw what happened and more than made up for hostess's rudeness. The food was good and the atmosphere nice. We were not crazy about the drinks but the desserts were fantastic. We will go back. Be prepared to spend some money if you go.
(3)Theresa W.
The Oyster Stew was nice. A cup is around $6, it had one whole oyster with a side of sea salt, lemon, and a tiny bottle of hot sauce. I would order it again. I got the half size shrimp Po-Boy with fries for lunch. It was great but there are so many great things on the menu. The beer ice cream taste exactly like you imagine and now is my favorite way to enjoy beer. I will definitely try Saline again.
(4)Nate S.
Great the number 2 oysters were great. The sauces that go with the raw oysters on a half shell was awesome. Good beer selection!
(5)John D.
Tried Saltine for a second time on my next week in Jackson. The food remained awesome. It is almost exclusively farm to table and it shows. I highly recommend the rye pretzel appetizer. The beer selection is large and interesting. My cocktail was spot on. Again, the staff was a bit slow to react to me at the bar and it was not busy. This does hold me back from considering a 5th star.
(4)Scout H.
Great dinner in Fondren! Saltine made a great impression as we walked in with a cool mural and to find it in an old school building. The impression continued as we sat a the bar drinking "wedding cake" punch. Our table was ready before we could finish our drinks and we started with calamari--delicious! Our meal was fantastic and the wait staff was attentive. The decor is gorgeous with cute modern furniture and beautiful tile work. Try this place for oysters, seafood, and a delicious looking hamburger ordered by the table next to us. Get some of their fries and try the "Uni" corn.
(5)Darius W.
If you're ever visiting Jackson, Satline definitely needs to be on your list. Great service, responsive staff, friendly atmosphere, and amazing food. I've only been a handful of times but I've never been disappointed. Show me better Oxtail Gravy Fries and I'll buy your next meal.
(5)Audrea P.
The oysters were excellent & the mixed drinks were designed with nautical thought in mind and well-made, each topped with fresh local herbs. Our server was excellent!!! The environment consisted of clean lines, fun nautical inspired murals and colors in this open atmosphere which was decorated with a bar as creatively designed to serve as the master-centerpiece of the room. Recommend!
(4)Max P.
I thought I hated oysters until I tried this restaurant. Amazing drinks and fantastic food! Ive been back 2 times since I started my stay in Jackson! I'm gonna keep on going, too!
(5)Shaun B.
I came down to Jackson for a work trip and the company chose this spot as part of our meal itinerary. I'm glad they did! They had a great beer selection and a lot of interesting menu items. I got the "PB & J" which was pork belly and pepper jelly. The stuff was out of this world amazing! I would probably get it pretty often if I lived in this area. This place loses a star on portion and price, but these seem to be typical of more hip and modern establishments. I'd definitely recommend this place!
(4)Amanda E.
I wanted to like saltine. I had high hopes. Everything about it seems like it would be awesome. The menus is creative and the food is good but not good enough for the wait. However, the service is extremely slow. This is my second visit and again it took over 50 min from when we ordered until our food arrived. It also took forever to get our drinks. Both my visits were on Monday nights so I can't even imagine what it is like on the weekends. I don't blame the servers because they do not control the kitchen. I wanted to Give this place a second chance and I was hoping that my first visit was an anomaly. I was wrong. If you feel like waiting forever for decent food- more power to you but there are better restaurants down the street to enjoy.
(2)Doss D.
Despite never having a craving for oysters, I find myself ordering them for the table especially a la carte. It is great to try the oysters from other regions [besides the Gulf]. They're all a little different and at least worth a try. The cracklins are fresh and crisp. The pretzel is great but I'd be lying if I didn't bestow some of its greatness on the excellent in-house mustard. It's a punch in the face but in a good way... for whatever that means. Nashville Hot anything is great. Be prepared because at times it can make you sweat. The burger isn't my favorite item on the menu, but it is at least satisfactory (you're here for seafood, not burgers). The shrimp po-boy, always a spot of contention for someone from the Coast, is on point. It is arguably the best in the Jackson area. If you can point me to a better one, please do so. Finally, for me, the highlight... the beer. The beer is thoroughly curated list by the owner (who is a well-known craftbeer geek). You have your regulars of course, but they are well-chosen for the limited selection we get in Mississippi, This is the only bar that I know of that runs a Randall (developed by Dogfish Head Brewery) daily or even at all. Basically, a Randall system makes beer infused with other flavors. Grab a glass because there's a new combination every day. Another unique beer feature is the beer engine. This serves low-production beers without additional carbonation and most of the time at room temperature. That last part is very important. Do not go in thinking something from the beer engine should be 38° like your Bud Light. That's not how it works. But, expect a truly unique flavor and try something new. All in all, Saltine is a bright spot in the Jackson restaurant scene. The food is priced fairly and arrives quickly. It is a great place to hang out with friends, try interesting food, and have a great beer.
(5)Coral E.
Great first experience at Saltine! A warm welcome at the front door and quick to be seated, we had a super nice and funny waitress that was awesome. We started with the cornbread appetizer that was really good. Next we had shrimp poboys that were delicious. Big fried shrimp, good bread and really good skinny French fries. I'll be back!
(4)Jen L.
Definitely A-OK. Great addition to Fondren--much needed for all of Jackson, actually. I can't say too much about the food, since all we ate were plates and plates of raw oysters. Actually, they had a great selection. I'm not going to go on about raw oysters; you either like them or you don't (the latter will steer you to other parts of the creative menu). If you like them, I will try to educate/bore you. A little pricey, but worth the splurge. Champagne selection could be a bit more extensive. The A-OK rating would be a higher rating, but the service was the set-back. I have lived and dined in NYC, SF and other big cities. Up-selling is part of the process, but there's a way to do it. Saltine is not mutually exclusive--many restaurants in the Jackson/Madison area have a problem with knowing how to up-sell on the sly. On our visits to Saltine, both my husband and I felt like the server wasn't listening to the very few words we said..."no, we are going to finish our drink since the glass is half full" on many occasions. Some diners, like us, aren't dining to get smashed. We are there thoughtfully, for the food, accompanied by glass of wine or beer. Sometimes, it seemed like there was a desire to sling us more booze than talk to us about the oysters. We will definitely be back time and time again, with a plan of how to combat up-selling strategies from some of the servers. UPDATE: Returned again. Since I am pregnant, we are not drinking...there was no alcohol pushing at all during this visit. Due to the aforementioned, I feel queasy all day and all night long. I didn't even think I'd make it through dinner. My husband went to town on the oysters and I tried other food, including the oyster stew, butternut squash and avocado and lobster toast--all were amazing. I even chowed down on my husband's saltine crackers and they were not out of a box. This might be my new favorite winter place in Jackson, Mizzizzippi!
(4)Judy R.
Ok, so I admit- I don't like oysters. But I'm always game for trying out a new restaurant in town, so I didn't let that stop me. The atmosphere is great! I don't think there's anything quite like it in Jackson. It's laid back in a cool way- bright and airy and cozy. I've never sat at the bar without making new friends. The drinks are great! Plus- they serve a lot more than oysters! I was excited about the skillet cornbread, but I've had it twice and both times it just seemed like plain cornbread. I did get brave and try the fried oysters, and although I'm not an oyster person, I actually really enjoyed them. I've had a few of their other dishes, and the po-boy didn't impress me much. The snapper was my favorite dish so far. I can't wait to go back!
(4)Anna W.
great food. great atmosphere. great service. AND THEIR GRAVY FRIES- SO GOOD
(5)Heddy-Dale M.
I was so excited to go to Saltine last night. We sat at the bar. There was a great bartender whose name I can't remember--he used to work at Jackson nightclubs (sorry). My husband had the butter/citrus/shallot roasted oysters, and the oysters Lafitte. They were both great. I had local tomato and crab toast--it was "OK," but the crabmeat was very dry. I ordered the Po' Bao, but at 7:30 pm they were out of them. (how sad--why???). My husband had the catfish and chips that were good, but nothing special. I had the lobster roll--the lobster was great, but it was too dry--there was not enough mayo! I ordered the cornbread skillet, that was gratis, as it didn't come out until the other dishes were served. It, too, was a bit dry, and very ordinary. The atmosphere was terrific. Perhaps I ordered the wrong dishes, but I was a bit disappointed. I will return, however, because the hype has been so good.
(3)Chris P.
The food and service were exceptional! From the wood fired oysters to the fried catfish and the cornbread...it was great. We had a little trouble getting started though, we waited almost an hour to get seated. However, Steven, the manager this evening, took great care of our five person party. Great staff and great food, you feel like they care about your business. Great job! I recommend the catfish, oysters Lafitte, and the shrimp po-boy.
(5)Mary M.
Absolutely LOVE Saltine! Hard to recommend any single item since they change the menu often but I have eaten there more than 10 times and liked it every single time. But, I'll give it a try: Lamb meatballs with cappellini nero noodles, seafood sausage, the oysters with crawfish (Lafitte I think), the Burger, debris fries, po bao (like a fried oyster on a sister shubert roll - yes, I'm serious), oyster soup. Ok, I could just keep going.. Last time in particular was the Uni-Corn with sea urchin (insane). Oysters are always awesome and they have a great beer selection and full bar. Be careful not to sit at the oyster bar, though. I did get an unhappy waiter one time for that. The chairs are a different color so you can see where the oyster bar is vs. the regular bar. I still REALLY want to try Ramen night but it always seems that something comes up on Mondays and I can't go! Go to this place!

It's overrated, period. I'd heard good things before trying out this place with 2 girl friends. The food was good, but not outstanding. I felt the prices were not worth the food quality nor the service quality. Between the 3 of us, we tried 4 different cocktails... none were to our liking. I even had to ask for juice to mix with my drink to make it tolerable. I'm not a fan and don't plan to return.

Great, hip addition to the Duling School. Beautifully decorated restaurant with oyster shells galore. The decor really fits the menu which is mostly seafood based. But with some notable non seafood dishes. Obviously this is the place to go for oysters in this part of town. I'm not a huge fan of oysters in general but my friends enjoyed them. The calamari appetizer is delicious because it comes with a sweet and spicy sauce. I had the roast beef po boy which was so good! The fries on the side were skinny and crispy just like I like them. I also tasted the Nashville Hot chicken which was equally good. My sister got the seafood sausage which was mushy and not at all flavorful. We'll pass on that next time. Saltine also has a good selection of draft beers and and extensive cocktail menu.

If you're in the Fondren area (or not...it's worth the trip), and you like oysters, this is the place to go. The oysters are brought in fresh daily. You can order from a selection of raw oysters off the board (Blue Points are our favorite). You can also order as many as you want. They are sold by the oyster. Don't like them raw? The fried and wood fired are just as tasty. Want to be adventurous? Try the PB&J. No, it's not a kid's meal. It's boiled peanuts, crispy pork belly, and pepper jelly served hot, no bread needed. Each bite is better than the last. The fried calamari is served on a mint, cilantro, and cabbage slaw with a vinegar based sauce. A definite favorite of ours. For desert try the Banoffee pie: graham cracker, dulce de leche, fresh banana, whipped cream, and beanfruit coffee. It's sweet, rich, heaven in a jar. Honestly, we haven't found anything on the menu we do not like. It's a great restaurant, with friendly staff, who love food!

Stopped by in March while visiting Missisippi. The building and its architecture is super unique and original. It's an old school. Love that. The weather was brutal when we were there so I guess that's why the selection of oysters was very limited and the ones that we did order were bland and not tasty. (However we had some the next day at another restaurant and they were fantastic). The potatoes in the Low Country Boil were too hard, undercooked. Presentation of the Redfish was nice, however to me, it lacked some flavor....tyme, lemon and butter are nice, but the Latin in me needs more bang.....maybe a little salt. Almost ordered the lobster roll, but glad I didn't when I noticed the gentlemen next to me ordered it.....way too small for $26 in my opinion. Anyway, glad we stopped by, cute place, cute town.

I don't give 5 stars ever, so this place is good. Clean to start off. Good spacing on tables, creative setup of old lockers and décor since it is in an old school. Really good vibe. Service was prompt and friendly from a very savvy, sweet server named Christina. Had great recommendations; Raw bar oysters, Beer, salad, and PB&J. Enjoyed each and everything. Oysters fresh. Beer crafted to my taste, had the Saison. Salad very clean and well prepared, not out of the bag but carefully sliced and diced with a delicious vinagarette. But the thing that puts them over the top for 5 stars was the PB&J. Nothing like it in the world that I've tasted, sweet, spicy and full head on flavor from the salt pork. I will go back and try it again. Dessert, try the Banoffee Pie, again never tasted anything quite like it, I would have it again too. Sweet, salty, light, the perfect dessert for me. Thanks Rachel for the recommendation. Best place yet in Fondren.

Huge fan of Saltine! I've never been disappointed. The food is always great and so is the service. The Oysters Lafitte is fabulous, and so is the Seafood Sausage. Crab and Avocado Toast is bright and refreshing, and the PB&J is a fun twist on pork belly. Fantastic beer list for those of us that prefer microbrews and locals.

Got the lunch special: half of a catfish poboy. It wasn't very good, but the people I was with liked their meals. It also took almost an hour for us to get our food.

Great food and awesome oysters! From Monday to Friday 4pm-6pm 1$ each! Great service and wine list too. You must pass here!

A nice place. I was in town on a business trip and a few of us went there for dinner. Great oysters! The po boy sandwich was nothing special. The mussels were ok but the snapper I was told was really good. The desserts were really good as well. I would go back for the oysters alone and had a nice beer selection as well.

Neat building and much better than average waitstaff. Whisky and ice comes with one big ole ice cube. Perfect. Shrimp po-boy is standard and good. Roast beef is a touch like sloppyjoe. The beef is very finely shredded with a thick gravy. Very cool addition to Fondren.

This is in an old school and has a lively atmosphere, casual and hip. We had raw and wood fired oysters. Good but small, a seasonal misfortune. Also an excellent shrimp pop boy and fries. In all, it is a nice place with good seafood-- a little expensive but not really to get great seafood access this far from the coast. Good beer and wine selection too

Interesting menu, well trained and attentive staff and rockin decor. A bit loud.....and more than 2 Chardonnays by the glass would be nice.....

We dined here and started with the catfish and caviar appetizer. I generally love catfish pate. This one was fine, but we didn't care for the jelly on top. It was served with just a few slices of very crunchy toast and saltines (that were not the freshest I've had). For dinner we had the redfish on the halfshell and the hangar steak with fries. The redfish ($19) was a nice but not large sized filet On top were a few thin slices of grilled lemon. The sauce was not visible and did not add much to the taste. I cut up the grilled lemon with the fish to get more flavor and that was pretty good. The steak was also fine, but it was a very small portion with a ton of fries. We tend to eat low carb so there wasn't much of a meal there. There were no sides or salads with the meals. Service was fine. There are just so many really good places in the area that I doubt we would go back as the it was more expensive and smaller portions than we usually receive.
