Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

The lasagna is life changing. That is really all you need to know, but in the interest of getting the word count up, I will continue. This is an excellent restaurant from moderate local celebrity chef and full time self-promoter Tom Ramsey. This is probably the best, and most authentic feeling Italian restaurant in Jackson. In general, it looks like a pricier restaurant, but is actually really good value all around. Again, if you try the lasagna, your life will change for the better. Let me tell you a little bit about the lasagna. It is hard to convey what it is like, as it is mainly a feeling I get when thinking about it. The feeling starts deep in my soul and bubbles throughout my body, weakening my muscles, but holding me up just the same. It overwhelms my mind and I usually have to close my eyes for a minute and breathe deeply as the images, memories and anticipation of its phenomenal flavors flow through my mind. I'll stick to the facts though. The pasta is made fresh in house. The tomato sauce is made fresh (obviously) and if possible the tomatoes will have been picked by a local farmer only days before. The mozzarella is perfect, and made in house. Overall, the lasagna is perfect. It will transport you away from all of life problems. As a technical note, they have fiddled with the portion sizes a little since they have opened and they serve the dinner portion at lunch now. This is a good size portion, and actually fairly good value. Lasagna is not the only thing I have had there, my dear readers. I have not had an unpleasant, or even slightly disappointing dish there. When they are on the menu, the Brussels sprouts are a necessary purchase. Even the chive-honey butter on grilled ciabatta is more delicious than you might expect. Everything is prepared fresh from high quality ingredients. The menu is always changing with what is available to the kitchen, but it is always excellent. The service is excellent, the servers are always knowledgeable and courteous. But seriously, get the lasagna. The bar is a classy place to stop for a glass (or bottle!) of wine and a nice cocktail. It appears that they make many of the bitters, tonics and other potions in house, all of it adding up to excellent cocktails. Really the only downside of the restaurant is that they stopped doing a house wine, which was always a really good wine priced fairly cheaply in a 500 mL carafe. MUST HAVE DISHES IN JACKSON - Lasagna. Dear god, did you not read this review? 1/3 of my words are dedicated to the lasagna. This is certainly one of the dishes you cannot be in Jackson without trying.

Hands down best Italian food outside of Italy (and definitely better than some places IN Italy). Ravioli carbonara was to die for. Excellent bruschetta. Pasta made fresh in house. Very best ingredients used and attention paid to even the smallest details. They even make their own limoncello! Different menu every week so go often and try as many items you can. Waitstaff knowledgeable and attentive. Have been twice now and foresee many more visits.

I went to La Finestra on Sunday for brunch and had a great experience! I got the "Full B" and the bottomless mimosas and it was such a treat. The wait staff was really helpful and diligent about making sure my glass was never empty - and also the owner came by the table to ask how the meal was. I'll definitely be going back for brunch again to try something new!

My new fav Italian, La Finestra! B/w the brunch, dinner, and the 'late night kitchen' I am perplexed by the great food thats served! Brunch favs-- Flounder Toast. 'Toady the Hole'. Duck+ Waffles. Dinner favs-- Cornish Hen. Tortelli. Night Kitchen favs-- Marrow Bones (tastiest ever!). Spicy Chicken+Waffles. Meatballs. BLT. Let me address the ambiance, fancy! Perfect for date nights. OH and I cant forget the best bar server ever, Thomas!
(5)Darius W.
Love the Night Kitchen! Fantastic, personable staff. Unique menu(I am definitely in love with the Spicy Chicken and Waffles, the BLT, and the Marrow Bones.) Great, manageable crowds. I even enjoyed the music. I wish there were more seating options for Night Kitchen however.
(5)Ryan K.
I've visited La Finestra for both dinner and brunch. Both were fantastic. I'd really recommend this spot for those looking for a cozy atmosphere in downtown Jackson. The staff is friendly; it's a pleasant place to be. Recommendations: duck and waffles for brunch and the pappardelle for dinner.

My husband and I finally ate at La Finestra last night and it was awesome! We had the ravioli "carbonara" which is a huge handmade pillow of ravioli filled with delicious cheese covered in brown butter sauce. The element that really elevates the dish and makes it incredible is the touch of lemon in the ravioli. We loved it. We also had the lobster fritters, the bruchetta platter, and the special of the day which was handmade angel hair pasta with squash blossoms in a white creamy sauce. We love that all the pasta is handmade in house. We also had excellent service and we love the downtown location. It is on the more expensive end, so it's great for celebrating special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries. They change their menu weekly and use fresh local produce. We cannot wait to eat here again!

This place is incredible. I've eaten here a few times and I've always been blown away. This is some of the, hands down, best Italian food I've ever eaten. Located on the corner of Congress and Amite Streets Downtown, La Finestra is a small, quaint, unpretentious little place right near the Governor's Mansion. There is a small bit of seating near the bar as well as a larger dining area. The service has always been quick and the servers all very friendly. All the waiters and bartenders I've met have been really knowledgable as to the menu and incredibly helpful with pairing wines with dishes, or making recommendations. As for the food, it's on another level. The menu changes pretty often, owing to seasonable availabilities. You really can't go wrong no matter what you order, but since it *is* an Italian place, I'm gonna go ahead tell you to order a pasta dish. Specifically, the ravioli. I literally dream about that ravioli, I tell ya. The raviloli "carbonara" with egg yolk and sage brown butter is... oh my god, so good. The wine selection is great, and they've got some reasonably priced options as well. This is a great place to go with a small group for a really nice meal and a couple bottles of wine in a fantastic atmosphere.

Amado our waiter made us feel right at ease as we came in road weary from a long day's drive. Tom Ramsey the chef stopped by the table to help me navigate gluten free options...we started with the marrow and tartare starters both great but preferred the tartare. For main course we had the pork chop and red snapper. Hands down the pork chop was fabulous! Mix of sweet and savory with pork cooked just perfectly! Nice dining surprise as we passed thru Jackson!

Fantastic. This place is a hidden treasure in Jackson's epicurean landscape. Affordable lunch, out-of-this-world brunch, and original and elegant dinner menu. You can't go wrong!
(5)Aaron Ray A.
Looking for a fun place to do brunch? This is it! Try their small plates and get a taste of several items. They also have Champaign and unlimited mimosas. The are located in a beautiful historic building downtown Jackson. I hope you enjoy as much as I did.

I won a gift card for La Finestra from work and decided to cash in on it one day. Its a 10 minute walk from my office, so me and the mrs had lunch. The server we had was nice and courteous. Food was prompt. I had the spaghetti and meatballs, my wife had chicken alfredo. Portions were so/so - we didn't waste anything. For desert we had the tiramisu. Total was around $30. Which to me is a little pricey for lunch, but the quality was there. But all in all, it was a good experience and we look to going back.
(3)Rob S.
This is a great find in Jackson. I had the lamb chops with mint and pea puree with black garlic aioli and it was fantastic. Others had the pork oso bucco which was the special of the night and they raved about it. The wine list is short but there are a lot of great finds for great prices. The shrimp fritters were good as was the bruschetta. Great service. I would definetly go back.
(5)Robert C.
Everything was amazing!!! Homemade pasta!!! Brussel Sprouts with goat cheese were awesome. Blackberry Bread Pudding for desert!! 5 Stars!!!

Finally had the chance to try La Finestra on my latest trip to Jackson. Add this upscale, little trattoria to the very short list of Jackson restaurants worth the drive from New Orleans! From the moment you walk thru the door, you're treated like family and know you're in for a very special dining experience. Chef Tom, and his world-class staff, leave nothing to chance. The menu is very unique, and changes frequently based on local availability. After trying many of the offerings, I'm convinced that you can't go wrong with anything on it, but a couple standouts for me, were the raviolli, cavatelli, ink squid pasta, butternut squash slaw, and the largest tiger prawns I've ever seen. Great wine list, too! Thank you all for an amazing evening!
(5)Michael O.
Great food and great service! The food is very good and shows the love that goes into the dishes. The owner also greeted us and asked if we needed anything. Love this place and this will be the place I go when in Jackson, MS
(5)Russell W.
This place is uh-ma-zin. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the owner and I bonded over discussions of Microsoft Excel. If you don't know, the owner is a really interesting guy who has gone from Wall Street to Congress Street in Jackson, MS! He clearly puts his all into his varied ventures. But enough about him, the food was to die for. It was the only time in my life where I ordered brussel sprouts and considered having seconds. I also had the oxtail papardell pasta. The noodles were clearly homemade with extremely tender meat. It made all my Italian ancestors smile and they were probably a little jealous. The place is small and hasn't been open too long. I'd recommend reservations, as there wasn't any seats available anywhere. I didn't have reservations and just lucked out a reservation didn't show.

Walked over with the co-workers the other day for lunch and was very impressed with the formal but friendly and comfortable atmosphere of this restaurant. We were promptly seated and had a really great waiter who actually knew about each dish. I decided on the Caesar salad with roasted chicken. It was delicious. I'm giving only 4 stars because the portion was a little on the slim side for the price. However, the food is delicious and I'll absolutely go back.

NYE started like any normal day for us. But ended with a fantastic meal by a generous host...Here is everything in between... I had been eyeing Tom's NYE menu for a couple of days. My wife and I had no plans and really hadn't talked about doing anything. Having a four year old takes your sanity away. I sent a post to Tom wishing him luck on the NYE dinner and made a jest to which he replied with a challenge. I took him up on it not thinking that it would go anywhere but boy did it. La Finestra had a five course dinner with wine pairings for NYE. We were met with a glass of champagne to start the night off. We were sat at a raised table overlooking the dining room. To me, this was the best seat in the house because you had a full view of the dining room and could see the reactions everyone had with each dish/wine that was presented. Course #1: Spuntini Gratinare di Mare - scallops, crab, parmesean, mushroom, vermouth, vellutato, chives and was paired with a 2011 Prosecco, Secco from Italy. I am not a huge fan of scallops but the way this was served in the shell was fantastic. A lemon wedge accompanied the dish that had been covered in paprika (maybe). The lemon is what brought the dish together. The scallop was cooked to perfection and was extremely tender. 3 1/2 Stars Course #2: Antipasti Pickett Farms Lamb Meatballs - ciabatta crumbs, coriander, mint, garlic crema, lemon ash and paired with a 2011 Prosecco Rose, Secco from Italy. I am a huge fan of Lamb unless it has a gamey taste...which this did not. Jess has never been a fan of Lamb so I was thankful because the four meatballs were all mine. The garlic crema mixed in with the mint paired well together. The lamb had a great sear all around and was extremely juicy and tender on the inside. Would order this again. 4 Stars Course #3: Primi Pasta di Lusso - Capellini, uni butter, oyster, caviar, salt-cured egg paired with a 2011 Orvieto, Antinori from Umbria, Italy I don't know what else to say other than I wanted a bucket of this pasta to take home. There was just enough of the uni butter making you wish there was more. After looking at Jess' plate I saw she had some extra and was a little jealous. I've never had caviar before now, but after tasting it, i wanted more. Mixing the caviar in with the pasta to make sure each bite had the briny flavor was the way to go. I do not eat oysters so I gave them to Jess, but do not think the dish missed anything by not having the oysters. I've never been a wine fan, but this was spot on. It wasn't dry and paired very well with the pasta. 5 Stars Course #4: Secondi Pan-Roasted Pickett Farms Filet - rosemary, veal & red wine demi. Sides of Flash-fried brussels sprouts and duck fat roasted new potatoes paired with a 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva, Monsanto from Tuscany, Italy Have you ever had a steak that didn't need a knife to cut? Very tender steak and you could tell it was from a very well cared for animal. it was cooked medium and while the steak didn't need any sauce the demi reduction was extremely flavorful. The only downside to this dish was the rosemary. Rosemary can overpower a dish very quickly. I cook with rosemary very frequently so it's not like I do not like rosemary. I managed to bite a burnt piece of rosemary which left a very bitter taste in my mouth. After a few sips of wine, the taste was gone but I was very cautious to leave out the rosemary. The duck fat roasted potatoes were a great accompaniment to the dish but the Brussels sprouts in a balsamic reduction with walnuts was by far the better of the two. I've never liked Brussels sprouts, guess i've never had them cooked this way before. They were small but packed a huge punch of flavor. Highly recommend!! The red wine went well with the dish but was too dry for me. 4 1/2 stars Course #5 Dolce Amish Friendship Bread (Mine) Tiramisu (Jess) The amish bread was like christmas in your mouth. Cannot explain other than go find who made this and force them to give you the recipe...or a loaf or two. It was slightly toasted and came with assorted berries and a cream. Jess' Tiramisu had a little too much coffee flavor for me, as I do not drink coffee. Jess liked the Tiramisu so that is all that matters. 4 Stars Overall, this meal was a great start to the night that we hope to do again sometime. Thank you to Tom and his staff. We were met with professionalism that you would expect with a meal like this. La Finestra is located right across from the Governor's Mansion so it is is in a great location in downtown Jackson. As we left, I made a statement to jess that I wish Hattiesburg had more establishments like La Finestra. We do have a couple of great places to eat, but don't want to wear them out so it is good to know that just a quick 1 1/2 hour drive there is a great restaurant like La Finestra waiting on us to open the door again. Thank you Tom for a great night!!!!

Wonderful service great food great atmosphere I would highly recommend this restaurant. Lamb tagliatelle was amazing and the wine list was lengthy and the dessert strawberry bread pudding was to die for dessert.

Quality Italian restaurant in downtown Jackson. Our meals were excellent with top notch service and a nice ambience. I grew up on Italian food so I can be pretty picky when it comes to Italian restaurants, but overall I was impressed and will definitely be back!

I ate here with some work associates the other day and had a very pleasant lunch experience. Service was a little slow, but we were a party of 12 so I will cut them some slack. There were many appetizing items on the menu, but I decided to go with the daily special for the day which was stuffed bell peppers and a side salad with parmesan peppercorn aioli. The salad was a delicious bed of mixed greens that served as a perfect complement to the parmesan peppercorn aioli. I could have made a meal out of the salad by itself. The stuffed bell pepper was also delicious. The pepper itself was nice and soft and stuffed with all kinds of goodies. The best was to describe it would be as a lasagna in a bell pepper. There is also a bar here that I did not take advantage of, but will do so in the future. They have some happy hour specials. It's nice to finally have a downtown location for some good Italian food!

I had been dying to visit for brunch, and it was well worth it. I sat at the bar and was well-attended to by bartender Thomas. He recommended the tasting plates, and was spot-on with the savory bread pudding, toady-in-a-hole with lamb bacon, and the duck waffle. You can't beat the bottomless Bloody Mary featuring local Cathead Vodka; try the Italiano for a different twist.
(5)Tim P.
I tried ever so hard to like it and I will definitely go back. The good things are the design and ambience, a creative menu and good cocktails. The "meh" things are no valet parking...fend for yourself in dark downtown Jackson. The lasagna was not good at all...dry on top and overly meaty. We had to look hard to find the bread in the panzanella salad but the tomatoes were good. We would order the salumi and the carbonara again. And, the servers were cute. However, our server had too many tables and his assistant was clueless. Our secondi came out before we were finished with our primo. They serve on dramatic oversized plates and 12x12 travertine tiles so there was no room but they stood there just looking at us as if we were the ones at fault. We ordered a table wine and the assistant said they had a new one so we said we would try it. Well, they had a new wine but it wasn't a table wine...the difference we found when they brought the check...$14.50 to $37.00. When we complained the chef comped the bottle. The wine was great and we didn't mind paying for it but would much prefer they train the support staff. We took cannolis home and they were great. Again, we'll give them another try because there is potential. We will be careful what we order and we'll make sure they know we don't want the courses served family style.

Stopped by for lunch today and was pleasantly surprised. Our server was attentive and very courteous. The portions are decently sized and make for a good lunch if you don't want to stuff yourself. I had the Pesto penne with chicken and a side salad. The pesto sauce was fresh and the side salad had fresh greens. A good meal and I will be back when I am in the area.

First time back to Jackson in a while , on business,, staying in nearby downtown hotel, evening options are few since most of downtown restaurants are breakfast /lunch only. Sidewalks roll up after 5 pm downtown.Yelped up La Finestra , right next to the governors mansion, and was graciously welcomed and was pleased by the ambiance and great service (thank you for the excellent recommendations, Seth) . My entree was extrordinary, prepared with expertise and fresh and innovative ingredients: pork cheeks over squash, wild rice , subtle sauce and cilantro to add a citrus highlight. Tasty. Dessert was a nice finish, toasted friendship bread and fresh berries and creme. Very nice. All in all, a great experience, service with friendly, unpretentious class, food for foodies, makes me want to come back to Jackson to try it again to see if this place can keep this standard up. Hope so, this high end Italian place was as good as any of the best n much larger cties .
(5)Cat H.
Absolutely delicious Sunday brunch. I had no idea a savory bread pudding existed, but La Finestra showed me the light. Perfect coffee, the most quality ingredients, attentive service. Yum.
(5)Paige W.
Customer service was fantastic. Our waiter was very attentive and did a great job. The host was also wonderful. The food was not crazy over priced and was far from average. I had the Shrimp and Polenta as my entree with the home fries and Lemon Aoili for an app. We also tried the Tiramisu. The dessert was not my fav ( I prefer my tiramisu heavier on the coffee flavor) but the rest of my table loved it. The atmosphere was beyond awesome. It did not feel like Jackson MS at all. Very urban vibe and very upscale feel. I will certainly be going back to try some of the other dishes. Especially some of the pasta offerings and I highly recommend this place.

Wonderful dining experience! Excellent service, very attentive staff, great drinks and amazing courses. Very talented chef! Can not wait to bring our family when they come out to visit! The ravoli carbonara is a must !
(5)Charley F.
I loved our experience here. The Southern 75 was out of sight. Great food and great atmosphere. The lasagna was delicious as well was the ravioli and spaghetti and meatballs. Three friends re achieve oohing and awing after each bite. Have been back just to the bar. I will become a regular!

Sitting at a window table at La Finestra on a rainy cold night felt like being in an actual big city. Great, intimate atmosphere. Chef Tom came out and chatted with us for a bit. Our server had an encyclopedic knowledge of the menu and drink options. And the food was excellent. I had the sweetbreads and beef tenderloin, which did not disappoint. My wife had a seafood pasta dish she enjoyed. We split the Brussels Sprouts, which were flash fried with goat cheese and walnuts, and were excellent as advertised. This is a great restaurant for a grownup, romantic dinner in a quiet, downtown setting. The cocktail menu looks impressive, though I stuck with our local Lucky Town Pub Ale, which was on tap. We'll definitely go back, perhaps for the Sunday brunch!
(4)Augustus A.
Had a chance recently to try it for lunch with some coworkers. It was a quiet friendly place, staff was courteous. I had the stew of the day, which was okay. My coworkers had the chef salad and the chicken pot pie. Both looked better than my offering. The salad had vibrant salad greens, beautiful vegetables and delicious looking ham and salami. The pot pie was a small cauldron of steamy chicken stew with what looked like a lavash cracker on top. I would try it again and recommend it.

What a find! Jackson has needed a truly outstanding Italian restaurant for a long time. The Ravoli as as good as any you will find in Chicago or Montreal. Be sure to try the fried brussel sprouts and bruschetta, both are outstanding and save room for the dessert T.D. M.

I wasn't impressed with La Finestra for lunch. The side salad wasn't terrible, but the Caesar dressing was unimpressive. I ordered the alfredo with chicken. The chicken was boiled and had no flavor other than the water they were cooked in. The noodles were under-cooked and tasted a bit like a cardboard box. Otherwise, the staff was great and the atmosphere was nice. I doubt I'll be back, though.

The three stars here is for the food. Great pasta and sauce, and yummy sprouts! However, our service was just awful! Yes, it was race weekend, and yes, they were short staffed, but if you're going to offer a special for race weekend, you should staff accordingly. I made reservations for 6:30, and was greeted with "they weren't supposed to take reservations" (I think they maybe had 4 total). We were seated 30 minutes later, and then just ignored for a while. The food was good. But, it would have been nice to at least been offered a free drink after waiting so long for what was decent food. The nice patrons of the place certainly made up for the clearly overwhelmed staff.
(3)Roger L.
Pro: Nice addition to downtown. I was a big fan of the table wines, hand made pastas, the Sinatra, and the manager (Leo?) who was outstanding. Con: Our server was clueless. Didn't know very much about the drink or food menus, and when we ordered drinks, he/she (not gonna get anyone in trouble!) had to come back multiple times to ask again. Finally the bartender had to come to the table to ask what we had. Kitchen timing also seemed off, as we received our appetizers about 10 minutes after ordering, waited 30 minutes, my salad came and then literally 2 minutes later the entrees showed up. Also, kind of surprised to not see Tom there on a Saturday night. Overall: I attribute all the cons to opening quirks, and I truly look forward to going back. Hope my last serving experience was a one time thing.

Wonderful new dining option in downtown Jackson. Our whole party had a delicious meal from appetizers (the special beet salad with homemade mozarella was particularly delicious), to entrees (I had the special which was scallops on a bed of braised leeks and was perfectly cooked, but everybody in my party cleaned their plates), to dessert (canolli with homemade mascarpone and homemade limoncello). The chef came out to speak with us throughout the meal and discuss the menu and was very friendly, the waiters were happy to let us linger late, and overall it was a great dining experience.
(5)David C.
La Finestra has aspirations of greatness, but it missed the mark for me at lunch. I was expecting a classic Italian approach of having a first plate and a second plate, so I was surprised to find that for lunch, La Finestra offers no appetizers and only offers sandwiches and pasta bowls. I asked for a started of pasta with garlic and oil, with a little roast chicken added. I received a bowl of flavorless starch, oil with only the slightest hint of garlic, and some chicken that had been quickly reheated. It was rather unappealing. Then I had the chicken parmigiana sandwich, because it was recommended by the waitress. The chicken was perfectly cooked; it had been hammered to a uniform thickness, breaded, and pan fried to a perfect juiciness, so the chef deserves kudos for that. However, the fries were served smothered in spices, but still lacking a hint of salt to bring out the potato. They were also served with a lemon sauce that clashed horribly with the potatoes and the sandwich. My waitress brought a Parmesan sauce which was much better. Finally, I adore tiramisu, so I had to finish the meal with a slice. Sadly my waitress did not start brewing my coffee until well after the dessert had been served, so it was nearly gone by the time the coffee arrived. Overall, I would eat there again to give it another chance, particularly at dinner, but their lunch menu and staff need a little more polish and thought before the restaurant meets the chef's implied aspirations.
