Stopped in for lunch today. Sat at bar and had the catfish special. Portion was adequate and flavor was good. Had fries and cornbread dressing as sides(dressing flavorful but a little dry for my taste). Bartender was very attentive.

When you provide me with a meal that leaves me wanting more, I tell everyone about it. Every meal I've tasted from Char is perfection. The homemade pecan pie is so delicious! I haven't tried the drinks, but my friends recommend the bar. The setting of the restaurant is romantic (dimly lit with soft music); therefore, it will serve as the perfect date spot. The servers are knowledgeable and honest, which is something that I appreciate.

Went during lunch on a Saturday, but the brunch menu they gave me didn't have steak. So I asked for the dinner menu and ordered a ribeye, medium rare, with a side of broccoli and grits. I also ordered the salmon from the brunch menu and it came with asparagus and cous cous. Don't be alarmed, the cous cous is meant to be cold. Washed my brunch down with a cold mimosa. The mimosa was forgettable. Overall experience was awesome, and our server was great. Will definitely go back when I'm hungry for some steak and salmon.

Again, the food here is superb. The lunch specials and veggies are outstanding. The ribeye here is probably the best in Jackson. This review, however, is not about the food. It is about the service. We always get top notch service here - always. every once in a while, you receive the kind of service that is so good that it tops even great food. Our waiter today was Adrien. Remember that name. He is a New Orleans import and his easygoing service makes eating at Char an experience to savor. Having been a waiter myself, I really notice good service and you can't get any better than this gentleman. Hats off to you Adrien. Because of you, we will choose Char over other places to eat and we eat out regularly. See you again soon. *It should be understood that good waiters don't stick around in the restaurant business if they can't earn a descent living and I am not talking about a crazy $15 minimum wage. No, Waiters are only paid $2.13 an hour and they typically are forced to share a significant portion of their tips with other staff members. They rely on generous tips to take care of their family. Otherwise, they leave the restaurant business, like I did. If you ever wonder why it is hard to find good service, look no further than the cheap customer that decides to save a few $ when they get the bill and tip poorly. Please people, when your waiter or waitress takes care of you tip AT LEAST 15% minimum. If you want them to feel appreciated, tip much higher. Sorry about the rant, but it breaks my heart to see good waiters and waitresses get tipped poorly by ignorant or stingy patrons.

There are two reasons I go to Char: The Pecan Crunch desert and the Duckling Breast. Also, the live piano player during the evenings. Also, the extensive wine list. Also, the Pan-Seared Salmon over Shiitake mushrooms. There are five reasons I go to Char.

If you're looking for a nice, slightly upscale dinner in Jackson, I'd highly suggest checking out Char. It's marketed as a "steak" place, and their steaks definitely won't let you down. I've always been impressed, but I'm not a huge steak person. Char always offers excellent seafood dishes. And their black and blue salad is one of my favorite salads in town! But mostly, I just want to talk about their pecan pie. Y'all, it is BY FAR my favorite dessert in town. And that's really saying something because dessert is my favorite meal of the day, and I've had a lot of desserts in this town. Char's pecan pie exists in a realm beyond words. A realm where a rich and gooey chocolatey pecan pie has been designed to melt perfectly in your mouth and leave you wanting more. Of all the times I've been to Char, more than half those times have definitely been just for the pie. (And a glass of wine, or two.) The restaurant, like I said, is slightly upscale. Think white table-cloths, slightly dimmed lights. The menu is a bit on the pricier side, but the lunch prices aren't unreasonable. Their brunch is also reeeeally good and they've always got a live jazz band that travels around the restaurant playing for everyone at their tables! It's very New Orleans-y in that way. The service here is always really nice. It's a very professional staff and you can tell they take the job seriously. I like to sit in the bar area. At night they have a pianist and they'll usually take requests! It's nice to sit and listen to some jazz and enjoy your pie. And other food too, of course! But man... that pie. That's a five star pie right there.

Solid four stars, leaning a little higher though. I'm sort of rushing through this review because I want to include it on a couple of lists I am about to make. I'll edit later. Char is a great restaurant. The focus used to be heavily on the steak, but they have, thankfully, diversified to a well rounded menu. Most of the dishes are more southern classics and blue plate type meals. They are all high quality. It is a great atmosphere and I've never had cause to complain about the service. That makes it a solid four stars, leaning higher. They don't particularly go above and beyond, unless, of course, you are talking about the pecan pie, which is one of those dishes you MUST try. MUST HAVE DISHES IN JACKSON - The Pecan Pie is phenomenal. You get a massive slice topped with a huge sphere of ice cream. You can get it for yourself if you are a glutton, but share with a friend or three and you will all be satisfied! This is one of those dishes that you simply must get, no written description will do it justice. Also, they have the best butter in Jackson. Make sure you ask your server for some bread for the table because they don't always bring it straight away. MAC & CHEESE LIST - Nothing fancy here, just good mac and cheese. Some of the best in Jackson!

This is one of my favorite upscale restaurants in the Jackson area. It's got a very romantic ambience and the staff is very attentive! I am not usually a fan of red meat, but Char's steaks are definitely an exception! Their filet literally melts in your mouth!

Shocking right? But let me explain. I came here several weeks ago for an interview candidate dinner, and witnessing the service and the variety of dishes done, it was clear that their focus was on the higher budget items. The real problem with this place appears to be management, they just don't seem to have their act together, from hiring the wrong waiters/waitresses to the wrong cooks, it was clear they don't know what they're doing. The restaurant itself has such potential with a real upscale crowd. Unfortunately it doesn't deliver. The steaks were great, but the salads and side dishes were sloppy, and service inattentive and spotty at best. On a good note however, I've had their catered food several times, and it has always been absolutely top notch, quality food, the best I've had from several restaurants in the area. I just wish the restaurant experience matched the great catered food.

I'll start by saying the food is top notch, although a little over-priced even for the great quality. The Cowboy ribeye was the best steak I have ever tasted. Their crab cakes were excellent as well. The server we had was good, but did not check on us too often. I'm sure he was busy. I think the lighting is a little too dim, bordering on just plain dark. Will definitely return for a special occasion.

You can eat in the bar, but beware, it fills up quickly! Full menu, and Lindsay and her fellow bartenders are great! A full service steak house! Love the service and the steaks are always good, prepared correctly, and flavorful. They also have salads, chops, and great sides. You probably need a reservation, but it's worth it! Five stars!

Service 5 star. Appetizers, 4 stars: - gumbo: tasty - fried green tomatoes: it was good, nothing extraordinary - fried crab claws - very good, not a common menu item out west... So do order it if you have never tried! Entrees: -Filet with broccolini, 3.5 stars: tender, juicy, would order again l. My issue is that their level of rareness is on the high side. I like my steaks medium rare, they cooked it to a medium rare plus almost medium. -Ribeye with asparagus/mushroom au gratin: horrible taste, worst ribeye I've ever had. Ordered twice bc the first time they cooked it medium to almost well done, literally ruining the steak. The 2nd try, they got it to medium rare, but the steak wasn't juicy even with the marble-ing... Huge disappointment. Steak- 1 star, don't bother. Au gratin- 4 stars, tasty, but not fancy...it was like cheese wiz, with mushrooms and asparagus. Funny mix, but good. Dessert: -pecan pie: very good 4.5 stars. Perfect crust, great filling, served with a big scoop of ice cream. If you want a steak, stick to the filet. If you like a solid medium rare, order rare, since their level of cooking runs high. Ribeye was a waste of money. Decent steakhouse for the area, but NOT awesome, I've had way better and way worse. If you want a real steak house, find yourself Mastros or Capital Grill.

Had amazed by service and food. Had the pecan crusted bake redfish. Wow, it was prepared amazing (classic style) and the other guests in our party had it prepared the new way and loved it all. The pecan pie dessert with a scoop of ice cream was fabulous too! You can't go wrong here.

Char was one of the pricier steak houses you'll find near Jackson. It is definitely more of an upscale restaurant with a nice interior featuring a bar and a dining area. Came here with a group of more than 10 and we had a few drinks before sitting down for dinner. Our servers were quick and polite and gave good suggestions for the meal. I personally chose to go with the ribeye which is my go-to steak. While it was very good, I don't think the cost was justified. After the meal, we ordered several desserts. They had quite a selection and all were very appealing and tasty. If you have some extra money to spend, try this place out as the steak is as good as it's going to get in Jackson. Otherwise, you're better off with some of the cheaper steakhouses.

Just keeps getting better. I have no idea why I only gave this restaurant 4-stars earlier. It's a definite 5....Cowboy steak, shrimp, filet, gumbo and those wonderful crab cakes yuuuuum!!!!!!

  • Denise H.

We ate in the bar area to avoid the 30 minute wait for a table. Bar stools and tables in bar area are first come first serve, a nice touch. He enjoyed the no filler crab cakes and thought they were very good but his Pecan blackened Black Drum was not flavorful. My vegetarian veggie side plate was as bland as possibly imaginable. The bread and butter (yummy) and live trio playing bass, trumpet and banjo were the best parts. I expected a lot more from reading the previous reviews.

Exceptional food & service at Char Restaurant. On my last visit to Jackson, I decided to try a steak (I usually get a salad...at a steak house...go figure!). I'm not a huge fan of red meat, but man oooooo man, am I glad I tried the steak. Cooked to perfection (medium), dripping with flavor...simply wonderful! I paired the steak with Asparagus & Creamed Spinach Gratin; both phenomenal! The steak was huge (think Fred Flinstone brontosaurus size). I always enjoy the Char Salad with chicken. But the main reason I go to Char is for their magnificent Pecan Caramel Butter Crunch. I hear angel's sing to me with every scoop. Words can't describe the goodness of this dessert. They have a mini portion as well as a regular portion. For me, the mini is just enough. Definitely a must go-to restaurant while in Jackson.

Always great! Char is a great place for brunch, lunch or dinner. I've been numerous times and have never ordered something I didn't like - and the service is some of the best you'll find. Note: I'm not the only one who loves Char - so think about making a reservation if you're going for dinner, especially on a weekend. Lunch during the week without a reservation is about a 10 - 20 minute wait. What do I suggest you eat? Everything is good, but here are some of my favorites: Their daily lunch specials can't be beat, fried green tomatoes, the chicken BLT, chicken tenders or fried chicken & waffles, the blackfish and ALWAYS end with the butter crunch dessert. ALWAYS. Trust me.

Have the Cowboy cut ribeye and the broccolini! I'm traveling through to Alabama and this was a very pleasant find...

Preface: I don't spend a lot of time in Jackson, so I don't get to explore the restaurant scene too much. With that being said, this was a 4-star dining experience. The atmosphere was upscale, the lunch menu appeared a bit limited, the food and service were both above average, but nothing to really write home about. Everyone at our table was satisfied with their meal. I would recommend Char to people, but am not in a rush to go back again.

Don't get me wrong, because I love to eat at Char, but every time I call to order the Char Salad to go and ask that my salad come without the tomatoes, the lady on the other end of the phone always has an attitude. This has happened more than 5 times, and when I go to pick up my order and ask for the lady whom I spoke to, I always get the answer, "I'm not sure who you were talking to. We have a lot of employees." My food is always perfect, but the phone service is quite terrible.

The Beefeater Sammich was recommended by 3-4 people when I asked for the best sammich in Jackson the other day on Facebook. I was able to sneak it in today for lunch. It was not at all what I was expecting. Turns out, the Beafeater is a nice moist roast beef sammich on buttered/grilled wheat toast. Nothing special. Nothing complicated. Just good. Real good. It comes with a side. I got black eyed peas. They were good too. I give the sammich 5 out of 5 stars. I think there are better sammiches in town, but this one deserves a plug for simple goodness.

From the moment you walk in the door, it is clear that Char is not your standard Jackson fare. The dark cozy ambiance leads one to believe that casual dress may not be enough. That doesn't hold true, and the sophisticated dressings are nice but not the most memorable part of this place. Having an affinity for seafood I ordered the sautéed crab claws and a bowl of gumbo. Neither disappointed. The claws were succulent and generous as a appetizer and the cup of gumbo was as good as I've had at any restaurant. Southern comfort cuisine with sophistication is an adequate description of what you will get here. I've been half a dozen times mad the only disappointment I've had was when they ran out of claws one evening. For Jackson, this is a must try.

Ate here for the first time and it was excellent! The server was extremely professional and made the experience top notch. I had the ribeye and it was a very good cut and served very hot. Could have had just a little more seasoning but it wasn't lacking. The mashed potatoes and spinach were also great. The crab cakes really are to DIE for! There is no exaggeration in the other reviews. The butter crunch dessert is very rich and sweet, but amazing.

My wife and I have been in the Jackson area for almost two years now and any special occasion we have, we go to CHAR. Our last time out we dined at the Chef's table. It was an experience that we will never forget. Everyone treated us like royalty. The hostess, our server, the kitchen staff, management, EVERYONE! The restaurant is ran like a well oiled machine and even in the busiest of moments no one lost their composure. The food was excellent as always! As we left everyone thanked us for stopping in. The head chef was busy as we left but did chase us down in the parking lot to thank us for coming by. He asked if we enjoyed everything and of course we did! Very kind, very polite and we will definitely be back many times to come!!!!!

Great atmosphere and service. The food was excellent as well. I had the 8 ounce filet with broccoli and creamed spinach. I was passing through town and will definitely go back when in the area in the future.

Went looking for steak and ending up loving the cake! Came in for lunch, the menu is trimmed down compared to their dinner options. Started with the Caesar salad. And chose the Chicken fried steak which was served over grits. I like to try the local dishes whenever I travel, and this steak had a unique (and delicious) prep style. The service was impeccable. Fast and attentive. They were doing good business for a weekday afternoon. Our meal ended on a high note with their award winning caramel cake. Served warm and topped with vanilla ice cream. You must try this!

I had a Cowboy Rib Eye (18oz) and it was good....it came medium even though I ordered Medium Rare, but the taste of the beef, the service and the timeliness were all very good. Nice establishment in the north part of Jackson, along the Frontage road.

Char is somewhat your typical upscale steakhouse - dark wood interior, superb service, big menu and PRIME steaks. Oh yes, they now are serving Prime Beef from Allen Bros Farms - they claim to be one of only two restaurants in Mississippi serving prime beef. This place was packed for dinner on a hot summer Wednesday evening. Everyone from business people doing deals to a 92 year old woman celebrating her birthday with her family was having a great time. We started with the Char (house) salad. Good greens, cheese, tomatoes, bacon and a creamy dressing. Oh - and there was half a hard-boiled egg on the side. Yum! One of the nice things is that, although they have separate side dishes you can order, each steak comes with a side. My Chi-town 14oz rib-eye came with a loaded baked potato. My coworker's daily special (rib-eye) came with roasted potatoes and fried onion straws. A testament to how good the beef is, my coworker order his steak rare. It came out cooked perfected and the beef was beautiful. Service was southern-friendly, meaning that not only did the server make conversation with us (where are y'all from? what brings you to Jackson? etc) but she never let our water glasses get half-empty. Something I found odd: they bring you a whole new water glass. I understand why some places do this for iced tea, but I think the dishwashing crew in back would love it if the servers just refilled waters with a pitcher!

This is a great find in Mississippi, I am very surprised to find such a formal restaurant in Jackson. I had duck and a cup of gumbo. I thoroughly enjoyed both. The gumbo was reminiscent of the great gumbo I consumed in New Orleans. The duck was marinated and cooked to perfection. The wait staff was attentive and polite....this place was worth the dollars.

We were in torrential rain on our way to Texas, when we decided to stop for the night in Jackson. We checked on Yelp for suggestions and selected Char, got a reservation thru Open Table, and took our storm-torn selves into Char. We were met by a warm atmosphere, very polite and welcoming staff and excellent food. The gumbo was delicious, followed by chicken piccata for me and the strip steak for my husband. The waiters were attentive and friendly and the service and timing of our dinner were splendid. We had a good bottle of Viognier, rarely on menus, and left feeling warm, dry and well-fed!

You must eat the crabcakes. Holy smokes! We arrived for brunch, right when Char opened, and we started out with the mozzarella beeftsteak tower thing. The tomatoes were very thickly sliced and quite crunchy with an uneven tomato to mozarrella ratio. The french vinaigrette was VERY tasty. Despite the tomatoes being thick and the cheese being thin, it was really tasty. My sister and I both enjoyed it, and we ended up dipping some of the delicious baton of bread they bring out into the dressing. The shaved onions on the dish were delicious, too! I had the Crab Benedict, and let me tell you, it was DELICIOUS. Amazing. Fantastic. The crabcakes were crab. They had the taste and texture of crab. Absolutely deliciously amazing. Yes, they were expensive, but I would eat them every single day if I could. SO GOOD. My sister had the Southern Style Benny with no meat, and she said it was fanstic, as well. She absolutely loved the fried green tomatoes. Both dishes came with fried onion star type deliciousness. These were very clearly purple onions that had been very lightly battered. They were delicious, too, and we both ended up eating all of them. I'm subtracting one star because we had ordered garlic cheddar grits, but they never appeared. When the server (in his weird lab coat that reminded me of the coats worn in mental hospitals) went to hand us our bill, he realized we never received them. He did offer to bring them out then, at no charge, but we were both stuffed and had a long drive home. Overall, the food was absolutely worth going again If I didn't live so far away...)

Wish I lived in Jackson. The best steak I have ever had hands down (the cowboy ribeye). Was slightly deterred by the price at first and almost ordered the regular ribeye but the waitress assured me it was worth it. The cowboy is their most premium cut of meat, that's why it's pricier. It's worth every penny. Really great butter crunch cake and pecan pie as well.

I think this restaurant is great for Jackson. It's a bit more upscale and offers great menu options. I had the free range chicken with garlic mashed potatoes, string beans, and asparagus. It was awesome! Their Pecan Caramel Butter Crunch dessert is literally one of the most delicious desserts I've ever had and they oftentimes sell out of it.

  • Luana C.

Char is definitely an upscale restaurant, so be sure to dress up! The waiters were very proper, and the service was overall excellent. The crowd seemed to be a bit older, as the prices on the menu are higher than other restaurants in the area. They definitely dim down the lights in the evening, creating a romantic setting. I thought the grits in the "Sin City BBQ Shrimp" was the most memorable of the night. My bf doesn't even like grits, but even he agreed they were delicious! Overall, I would recommend this restaurant to someone who wants to treat someone to a fancy dinner. If not, consider coming here during brunch/lunch. It's more affordable. =)

The food taste ok except for I had fried chicken and it was loaded with salt. Almost as if it was purposely done. The sides were ok. The 3rd star is only because I really enjoyed the live entertainment. Those guys could play anything. They even played Sesame Street theme song.

Char is great and consistent - something difficult for Char's competition (actually they have none in Jackson). Their daily lunch specials are great if you are a little rushed, the gumbo is delicious, the steaks are superb. Love it.

I enjoyed the service and overall ambiance of an old fashioned style steak house. This was my first trip to Jackson, MS . I ordered the gumbo and loved it. The small rib eye was done perfectly as ordered, medium rare, and you can't beat the garlic butter on top. I even enjoyed the asparagus in lieu of the potato. The wines were reasonably priced. I put this on par with a J Gilbert's for those who know them. I will be be back on my next trip down to this part of the country. I hope I get back soon!

I love Char! Great piano bar. Meet friends and make new friends. Also, talk business and network. The staff is courtious and very attentive. Delicious food and homemade desserts. Romantic atmosphere for dining. Char is right off I-55, in Highland Village, great location. They have a sister restaurant, Amerigo's on Old Canton Road. Amerigo's is the best Italian food in Jackson. Nice bar with flat screen for sports. Exceptional staff and chef. Katherine Pitts

Great live jazz brunch. Attentive service. Out of town & Char came recommended as a nice place for brunch with live music. My mimosa was great & one of the best I've had. I especially like my appetizer: doughnut bites served in a bag that the server shakes up to cover with cinnamon sugar. The vanilla marscarpone on the side was addictive. ( had them box up a few and am eating them as I'm writing.) Also had the Southern Style "Benny"--a take on the classic eggs benedict but with buttermilk biscuits, country ham, and fried green tomatoes instead. Very filling and could not finish it. Wanted to try dessert and settled on a apple crunch caramel cake topped with really good French vanilla ice cream. Good but I was stuffed and could not finish it either. Nice touch was the jazz trio moving around to different parts of the restaurant to perform.

The service was excellent, but the kitchen staff was unable to cook a steak medium well. When my steak was brought out the first time it was medium rare (at best). They took it back to cook it more, and when they brought it back out in was medium. The manager wanted to take it back again, but by that time I was really hungry. I chose to eat the steak medium. I figure if you are going to charge 40-50 dollars for a steak, you should know how to cook it. Service was 5 stars, food was 1 star.

I am a Jackson resident for 31 years. I moved to DC and now fly back monthly to Jackson finishing up a degree. I have never been to Char as a resident and went with a few classmates for the first time to end our night with some dessert. I'm sad to say that I never gave Char a chance when I was living here! We couldn't decide which dessert to try. The waitress and hostess both said that you can order a full dessert, a half dessert or a $2 dessert. The 4 of us ordered 5 $2 desserts and our bill was only $12. The flavor of the pecan pie is out of this world as well as the butter crunch cake! I went to bed thinking about it and woke up thinking about it. This is what dessert is suppose to taste like. It's the noise making, eye rolling, extra facial expressions dessert. My group has already planned a trip back here next month for dinner and dessert. The atmosphere is classy and welcoming. You can be laid back or very dressy and still blend in. We saw the other diners' meals when we walked in and the steak and baked potato looked so epic!!!! Do yourself a favor and at least give the dessert a try. I am excited next month to for our future planned visit! 1 month to go to flavor out of this world!!!

This place is ok. Good for lunch. EVeryone loves some beefeater? sandwich. I had crabcakes, they tasted fishy and were small. Filet was ok, kind of dry as well. I heard the burger was good, may need to try that next time. Probably won't come back here unless there's some free pharmaceutical dinner.

I can't comment on the food, even though I know it is great, because the last time I actually ate here was too long ago to really do a fair review. I have been for some late (or early for the folks without kids) night drinks. The atmosphere is quite nice. The staff is very attentive. The drinks aren't cheap, but they aren't any more than any other place in town. If you want a low key place to have a few drinks, plenty of room, and spotless appearance. When we make it back here to eat again, I'll update with a review on that!

Simply put, I won't be back. This was my first visit to Char and I wasn't impressed. Compared to most fancy restaurants I've been to lately, the "free" bread was unimpressive. The meal was way too expensive for the small portions. The service was mediocre especially considering the price. On the plus side, appetizers of gumbo and shrimp cocktail were good. The "special" of redfish was a small portion of slightly overcooked fish for $32 (more than any fish dish on the menu). Also ordered was duck that was tough and chewy. I really wanted dessert because #1 I was still hungry and #2 I wanted to see what a $10 piece of chocolate cake looked like. But Char already had too much of my money so I left and had dessert elsewhere.

Great Place to eat. They could learn from not putting "oil on the bottom of the dish", but it's the only place I could find here that didn't deep fry everything. Staff is great, food is 3 star, hence the 4 star total.

Best Steaks in Town. All Prime Cuts. Tasty Appetizers. Good Gumbo. Fresh Fish. Nice Selection of Salads. Best Desserts Around. Great Wine List. Service is Outstanding.

Nice steaks, though you would pay $20 $24 instead of $37 for an equally well prepared one at other establishments in the area. Staff is friendly , but our wait-person lacked the training you would expect in a fine dining restaurant. Chef may be trying to be a bit over-creative. The corn pancakes were so overwhelmingly sweet, the delicate flavor of the most excellent crab beneath was completely obscured. Wine selection was good, but again a bit overpriced 20% compared neighboring restaurants. Go with the Salmon, light sauce that complements the fish nicely. Wonderful -- and more reasonably priced than the beef.

I went to Char for the first time in several years yesterday. A friend and I met for lunch. We both ordered the red beans & rice as our entree. She had creamed spinach and a side salad for her two sides. I had butter beans and a side salad for my two sides. We both doctored our red beans & rice with hot sauce. The roux for the red beans had an underlying flavor of chili powder. The serving size was ample for lunch. She enjoyed her creamed spinach and I enjoyed my butter beans. My salad consisted of some brown pieces of iceberg lettuce. I would have preferred romaine lettuce. The service was excellent. We ordered our food. Less than five minutes later it was on our table and at the correct temperature. The waitress forgot to bring my friend the cornbread. That took away from the service being 5 star. The waitress was pleasant and attentive. A pro because we definitely tipped well. The meal wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. It was okay. The fact that I had to add hot sauce, the persistent underlying taste of chili, and that some of my lettuce pieces were brown prevent me from giving the food more than 3 stars. I would probably come back for lunch, though. Service was quick. Not terribly bad for $10.90.

Keeps the 4-star rating but I must say that the "Figgy Piggy Tenderloin" is as of now the best pork dish I have eaten, Yes, it beat Bobby Flay's pork tenderloin from the Mesa Grill. Still not quite a 5-star establishment but it is trying!

This was the first place I was taken to when I came down to visit my now fiance's family. I had never tried half the things on the menu (hush puppies, and fried catfish?) Now this place is a standard whenever we come back to Jackson. They have great southern/traditional American cuisine with a friendly atmosphere. It does get busy for lunch on Fridays so plan accordingly. They also have good wines and beer as well as a daily special severed with your choice of sides.

Lot of folks rave about Char, but I have to be honest ... the food is good, but not great ... very pricey and small portions. It is a nice place to go and have a drink, but since I don't drink that doesn't appeal. Last time I was there the side dish wasn't even hot ...

What a lovely restaurant! Although it is a bit pricey, the food at Char is definitely delicious! Steaks, salads and down home comfort foods make up this surprisingly large menu. Some great things to try include the amazing tomato tower, the fried green tomatoes, gumbo, beefeater sandwich, ahi tuna and the wedge salad. The atmosphere is great for groups, special occasions, young crowd and aged! PS: if you're up for it, find out for yourself why they call it a double cut brownie. Primo!

Awesome service (professional, courteous, personable, prompt), great food (specifically the pork tenderloin) and a nice atmosphere. I either missed the beer list or they don't have one. Great for a business casual dinner.

Char is one of my favorite lunch places in Jackson. Normally solid service and food. Ordered the Friday special of turkey and dressing today. Terrible. Turkey was fatty and cornbread dressing (my favorite) side dish was burnt. I know people want a quick lunch, but it alway makes me nervous at restaurants when they serve the meal 3 minutes after you order. I'm afraid for Char. Had been a great Jackson restaurant for a while. The past few times I have eaten there it looks like their clientele is going down. I'm sure the management notices too. Baseball caps, blue tooths and white t-shirts shouldn't be worn to fine dining establishments. Mama should have raised you better. Again, bad day there, but will go back. Also char, please put the chicken sandwich back on a baguette for the second time!

Char was recommended to me by a local here in Jackson. I ordered a new york strip and it was cooked perfectly. Medium all the way through and it had a very good flavor. wish i would have found this place during my other week here. comes with handcut fries or salad. fries were great and salad was typical. Meal also comes with a little loaf of bread that was warm and fresh. service was excellent. there were also other sides available. compared to other steak houses i have eaten at the prices were reasonable.

Fantastic food! I usually go at lunchtime and sit in the bar area b/c that way you can generally walk right in, and the servers in the bar are awesome. Jason is the main bartender/server, and he is wonderful. Go in twice, and he'll remember not only what you're drinking but your name and what you do. Every day there is a different lunch special which comes with a choice of two side items, but there is also a regular menu to order from. I love the Char salad with salmon, which comes with a big piece of broiled salmon, but I do also love the Beefeater roast beef sandwich and the Hamburger steak, which comes out with rich gravy and is fantastic.

They sure throw meat around in this place, and that's a good thing. My wife and I had supper here recently before going to see a play. We were assigned two servers who were very helpful. I ordered duck which was delicious. My wife got scallops which also were tasty. The sides are large portions served family style. We got brussels sprouts with duck confit and creamed spinach (both were great.) This place is weird to me. It's a very Mississippi attempt at a nice restaurant---good menu, decent service but you can still tell that this place used to be a shoney's.

Wrong address listed. It's in Highland Village in Jackson (off I-55). Love the sesame chicken salad. BEST pecan pie EVER - served warm with ice cream. Must try it!

Visited at lunchtime, this place was absolutely packed. Extremely nice interior was marred by both my drink order and lunch order getting messed up by the sub-par waitress. The chicken fingers I ordered finally arrived after everyone else at the table was 1/2 through their lunch. The chicken was so overcooked I could almost not chew them. Everyone else seemed to have a good experience so perhaps I just got unlucky. I definitely would not go back.
