This is a local version of taco bell. We love this place. Believe me if you try it, there will be no going back to the border. Very reasonable prices and good quality, good service. My fave is the macho taco salad. It is habit forming.

  • Serena D.

Although the staff is friendly and the food is fast, the food itself was disappointing after reading the positive reviews. The chicken and beef tacos were not up to par. The guacamole is very good and the salsa bar was a big plus. The prices were low so that's good.

Look out Taco Bell! No, but seriously, Taco Sombrero is a locally owned, small-time, one-off fast food Mexican joint, and they're doing it right! This place opened up in 1979 and they're been there ever since whipping up fresh Maxi fast food. We order a little bit of everything for a well-rounded sampling, and nothing disappointed, especially the tamales! Yeah mofos, I said, "tamales!" You ain't gonna get those at no stinkin' Taco Bell, and that's a fact! NACHOS, STEAK TACO, TACO SALAD, REGULAR BEEF TACO all equal goodness. Nothing here is pre-packaged, cooked off-site and trucked in. Please keep in mind that this is fast food, not authentic Mexican that you'd get on the side of the raod heading to Chacchoben. Next time I'm in Gulfport, I will make it POINT to return here!

I was looking for a quick stop lunch on my drive from Pensacola to New Orleans and I came across this little gem!! Everything was excellent!!! There is an incredible selection, and the staff was very friendly!! The owner even gave me a tamale to try for free - which was incredible!!! Would definitely recommend!!! Great for family too!!! I'll definitely stop here again!! Great Job Taco Sombrero!!!

  • Tracy D.

Yeah it's just above Taco Bell in taste. I support local family owned places 100% But, Real Mexican grub like carne asada or carnitas street tacos or tortas Can Not be found at a place like this. Try El Lupillo on Pass rd. to get your true Mex fix. The locals really seem to enjoy Taco Sombrero's "Mexican" food... Proving ignorance is bliss.

I like this place has some Damn good tacos... I will say this it is a better place than taco bell you order a soft taco at the bell the shell ice cold makes the entire taco cold I have been here after last nite three times now... love that they have a drive thru too... staff are awesome and nice and don't take this wrong but their chicken soft tacos better than the mexican restaurant we ate at other day that if you check my yelp reviews I reviewed and this places food I give a 9 out of 10 was latino owned and this place is white owned... sorry just had to say if you think this place is a bad place go count their money at end of the nite the place is always booming and they are still here because all the authentic mexican restaurants here in Gulfport is a dying breed!!! I am from Alabama and a buddy of mine came over here wanted to have lunch and wanted mexican food we went here he loved it!! Oh and BTW me and the wife meeting there for lunch today!!!

Fantastic fast food. The food is always fresh and the staff is always quick to help or answer any questions. The menu is a bit hard to grasp so make sure you ask questions. The Bueno dinner is a favorite of mine. The condiment bar with fresh salsa is always clean and adds a lot to spice up the meal. The bathrooms are strange but whatever.

  • Lacie D.

Taco Sombrero is a good lunch option in North Gulfport. It's not the best taco you will ever have, but relative to the other options in the area, it's good cheap food.

  • Michael W.

Best fast food Mexican restaurant in south Mississippi. Real meat, great service, and I assure you that you won't be disappointed. Not a single bad item on the menu. Enjoy

  • Gibu 0.

Seriously good mexican food. Think taco bell but WAY better. The taco is same price as a taco bell hard taco but tastes way better and has way more meat in it. At least twice as much meat but i would guess even more than that though. They taste so good and so fresh and flavorful. If there is any downside at all it would be the drive through is never empty the way taco bell's often are. Plus just the one location. They should be everywhere. Any time im stuck settling for a taco bell i have sort of a day dream about a taco sombrero droping down out of the sky right on top of the taco bell and replacing it just in time for my order. ..... Seriously though, how can the tacos be THAT much better but still the same price........ ??

  • Mr. D.

I believe the seasoning is suited towards those who aren't fans of cumin, cilantro, etc. Service is good, fast, but the burritos were skimpy, nachos and tacos were bland. It didn't reflect real Mexican cuisine. Great service, though!

    (2)
  • Patric R.

We just moved here, and Taco Sombrero is pretty darn good. We love mexican food, and even though this place isn't "authentic" the food still has a "Mexi-feel" all of it's own. The service is great, clean atmosphere and a great selection. In the 10 days that we have lived here, we have eaten at Taco Sombrero 4 times.

  • Kiki M.

I love eating here. My boyfriend and I took a quick 3 day trip to Gulfport from New Orleans to relax and shop. We were both craving Mexican Food and something besides Taco Bell. We drove to Taco Sombreno and placed an order for a Nacho Grande 3 orders of tacos & a Mexican Pizza. I was actually pleased. I ate the whole Nacho Grande and became completely full that I couldn't touch the Tacos. Their food is not 100% authentic but it has a nice taste to it and it beats Taco Bell anyday. Please try them out you will be pleased!

  • Megan B.

I love this place! I'm new to the area and a friend of ours told us to try it and we'd never want to go back to Taco Bell again...she was right! I absolutely love this place and will definitely be going back for those cheap delicious Mexican food cravings!

  • Gigi S.

Everything I tried here was great, and I'm Hispanic! The taco salad, the little tamales plumped with beef, the nachos, the tacos. The salsa bar. Really couldn't go wrong. Combine all the yummy goodness with the look and feel of a sixties gas station, and you have a winner. The restroom is outside around the building, placed ever-so strategically so that when you exit, everyone in line at the drive-thru can only guess what you were up to in there. Please don't ever redecorate.

  • Teckie H.

We LOVE Taco Sombrero. It's a great alternative to "fast food" - not really fast food, not anything upscale and stuffy - it's just right. Easy and quick with GREAT customer service. My husband and I always get the macho taco salad with guac and chips. It's a treat!! I like it better than 99% of the sit-down Mexican restaurants in South Mississippi.

  • Rex J.

Let's face it. This place ain't near healthy but it's soooo good. Want some salty cheesy goodness? You've found the spot. My go to quick taco fix. Chicken chimichanga plate is the perfect box of unhealthy food you can get. The nachos ain't too bad either. The tacos are great! Bigger and better than that Taco Bell stuff. If you're in NG, it's worth a stop!

  • Neal M.

Oh man, I've eaten at this place since i was at least 5 years old! I remember back in the day when there was one on Pass Road, now it's a car lot but over the years it's been a lot of things. This is the furthest from "mexican" food i can think of but buddy, it's a landmark for Gulfport! I remember in high school when i was a senior and we'd get out early EVERYONE would be at Taco Sombrero. I don't think there's anything i wouldn't get here.

Ok last time I posted about this place i had just return from L.A. and had a great time eating at all my favorite tacos shops. Now that I have been away from home for a while I have to admit that the more I stay here the more I appreciate the food I get at TS. Their service is great, and if you take the time to go inside, you will find that they have a small but fresh salsa bar. But what has really impressed me recently is the customer service. I recently made a purchase in the drive thru and when I got home realized that they accidentally made my order wrong (I asked for no rice only beans, they gave me no beans only rice) while it was not a big deal I did call them back and let them know what had happened. I got a machine, so I didn't think I would get a response. Not only did they call me back but the manager insisted that I come back and get either my money back or a store credit. The next day I decided to cash i om my credit and when I went up to the counter, they treated me like I was a VIP. Everyone apologized and they made sure that I not only got my order, but gave me a a discount on my friends meals. This is definitely the type of service that I had forgotten existed. I dont know if it was because of the service, or because my mel was free, but that chimichanga and taco were the best I had had in years!!! Thanks TS and I will be making you a routine stop on the way home from work!!!

Stopped here based on other reviews. I guess you can't beat a 75 cent bean burrito. Cheap. Cheap. Cheap. You get what you pay for.

  • Paul O.

    Always love their Bean Burrito

    (5)
  • Joe R.

I got a chicken fajita which was basically a chicken taco, it was average. Some of the items are decently priced but most stuff on the menu will set you back about as much as you would see in a sitdown full service type of environment. The decor looks like a taco bell from the 70's. If you are so famished that you are afraid you might expire from hunger stop in, otherwise keep driving to another establishment.

  • Alicia M.

Great food fast! The manager, who wears plain clothes, is very friendly and tries to get to know everyone that eats there on a regular basis. Even at peak times when they are slammed, the staff can take and process orders fast. The other day I was about 10 numbers back when I ordered and had my food in about 5 minutes. The ground meat in the taco salad has a good flavor. My favorites: The Bueno Dinner Macho Fiesta Taco Salad (which if you order inside you can add peppers, taco sauce, and their wonderful Zesty Ranch dressing from their topping bar)

  • Jill M.

Ok, i have to weigh in on the taco hat since Ive been eating here since a small lass. Taco Sombrero is AWESOME and is pretty much a gulfport landmark..i mean really..that place has stood the test of time. The food is cheap, its always consistent and the portions are great! As far as the question over whether or not their ingredients are canned or handmade, all i can say is that Ive never been here and had anything that tasted like it wasnt fresh or had been sitting out for hours, which is more than I can say for alot of restaurants on the coast. Like I said, ive been coming here since as long as I can remember as a kid and this is the single most consistent place on the coast...you will always know what to expect. Maybe their food isnt everyone's cup of tea but this place holds a dear place in my heart. Bueno dinner FTW!!!!

    (5)
  • Chad L.

Every time we come home we have to stop at the Hat!

For fast food Taco Sombrero is the place to go! Fast service, good food, big portions, what more can ya ask for?

  • Steve R.

If you want an alternative to Taco Bell, here you go. Their hard shell tacos are much, much better than @ Taco Bell. Give em a shot

  • Cory M.

Great food and fast service. You can tell people in the area flock to this restaurant because of the line of cars in the drive through. But the food is served fast and it has always tasted great. I have the bad habit of hitting Taco Sombero on the way home and getting a sweet tea and a taco burger. The sweet tea is as good as you can get in the area.

    (5)
  • Ross L.

I have ate their since I was a kid, so i am probably a little bias. But it is pretty good chow, better than Taco Bell, but more expensive. Their meet and seasoning is very good in my opinion. And there is a manager or some guy that has been there forever, and he always talks and greets everyone making them feel welcome.

  • Carrie U.

Pretty horrible food. Definitely not authentic. Ordered a steak burrito and it was strips of underseasoned dry meat in a tortilla. However, I tried their tiny 3 for 1.99 tamale and those were pretty awesome. The flavors were correct. I was lured into this place because I really needed to use the bathroom and the little mariachi dolls on the sign outside were hilarious. The bathroom was decent and I really appreciated it.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
