Go-to place for some good sushi and hibachi!

As usual, I sat at the (sushi) bar. I'm not a big sushi guy, but I do love other Japanese cuisine. This place was an above-average hibachi spot with great service. I ordered the chicken-steak hibachi, which was 1.5x enough for dinner. I left incredibly full. The meat quality was very good, but the cook used a bit too much soy sauce or something else salty that made some bites a little bit oceany. The veggies and rice served with the dish were both well-cooked. I can't speak on the quality of the sushi, but other people sitting near me seemed to be genuinely enjoying themselves.; Overall a good experience. 4.2 stars.

Not a resident here in Columbus, but I Yelped this establishment since it was datenight and UMI had some good reviews. However, I came in knowing the limitation of sushi places here, I expected far better than what we received. The decor of the restaurant was nice and conservative. We were greeted by the staff when we entered the front door by caucasian women dressed in traditional japanese tops. The service was okay, not the best or highly attentive. We ordered the chicken bento box, miso soup, dragon roll, and i think the alligator roll. The salad from the bento box was good. Miso soup wasnt salty or anything it was well balanced. The sushi rolls werent anything great. The rolls were sloppily rolled, they were loose and came apart. The avocados on the aligator roll were warm or room temp. The chicken from bento box was disgusting. Lacked flavor, texture, and tasted like vinegar. If you want to go out for sushi, maybe you're better off going to a different sushi joint or maybe they had a new sushi chef that day. Who knows... but I would not recommend this place.

Sushi Sunday has become a little tradition of ours, whether we order takeout or dine in at Umi. They have a sushi bar and a hibachi option. The Green Hulk Roll is my personal favorite And my husband always orders the BMW roll. You probably can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Tonight I ordered the vegetable udan soup and it was delicious. It's one of the more authentic menu items. The manager is really nice and always remembers us..sometimes even brings us free drinks! If you sit in front of the sushi chefs and talk to them, they might even toss you some things to try!

I love the shrimp shumai dumplings. The tempura is decent. I usually get veggie tempura and the serving size is gigantic. The batter could be just a bit lighter. I love really fresh sashimi and real wasabi. You won't get either at Umi. Neither is bad, but they are pretty mediocre. Fresh fish and real wasabi are in pretty short supply in inland small-town Mississippi. I have tried a few of the less exotic sushi rolls and they are ok at best.

Love this place! They never fail to give me exactly what I want. All sushi that I have tried is wonderful and the hibachi dinner is always fun and delicious! The owner/manager is always so friendly and remembers us from previous visits. Would recommend this food to anyone! One of my favorites for sure!

Great sushi rolls!!! Air-conditioned, thank goodness, with this heat. I'd recommend sitting at the hibachi bar, because you'll get an awesome show! Just make sure you sit back initially, because there will be high flames that will nearly singe off your eyebrows. (I kid, but really... keep some distance). The chef stacks onion pieces into a volcano and sets it on fire! You won't be disappointed! Nothing but laughter and delicious food to follow.

I no longer live in the area but recently visited and wanted to eat at Umi. I was hoping the food would be as good as I remembered. The food was just as good if not better than I remembered. Robert the manager was great. It was good to see him again. He has always been very kind and welcoming as has all the staff. I recommend the Red Dragon rolls and the Crunchy Shrimp rolls. I can definitely see why it was voted the best sushi in the state. I wish that they had a third restaurant on the gulf coast. I will definitely be back when in town again.

This would easily be the best sushi place in town of not for the visibly drunk and highly rude manager. My poor waitress was obviously trying to babysit the manager and keep us happy the entire time. The manager was drinking on the job in front of customers and made no attempt to hide it or to even act like he was sober. He was very rude to our table. I will not be returning here. It's a shame because the food is pretty good.

Service has always been great, crunchy rolls and miso soup are always well prepared and better than average. The spicy tuna leaves a little to be desired, not sure if it was the quality of the tuna or the preparation but it left a little to be desired.

I previously raved on the food & portion sizes at this restaurant. The food is good & a good value for your money. However, the owner/manager or whoever he may be is the reason for this rating. Robert, the owner/manager needs a lesson in customer service because he has been rude to me the last two times I have visited Umi. I will not return to Umi and will no longer recommend Umi to friends & family because his attitude is unprofessional & unbecoming of someone in the restaurant business. He asked if I wanted a table or hibachi but stated that no tables were available when clearly, several were available when the hostess & I turned the corner. He then proceeded to say that I needed to make a decision when I already had made one. I did not want to take up an entire hibachi by myself. I don't know what his deal was, & I should have left instead of giving Umi my business. The employees stated to me that he is not a rude person & apologized on his behalf. However, he should have apologized himself for his words toward me as his customer.

My wife and I used to enjoy eating here. We have spent hundreds of dollars. We will never eat here again. The manager is a jerk. He hung up on my wife when she was trying to order takeout food during a time when our toddler was sick. He enjoys the chicken/rice and soup, but the manager wouldn't let my wife order this as takeout food. She was desperately trying to get some comfort food for the poor little guy and instead had to fight on the phone with Mr. English-As-A-Second-Language who talked down to her and then hung up. Why give people like this business?

Great experience! I come to the area on business and always make it a point stop by Umi's. Both hibachi and sushi bar are top notch. Tamara is an awesome server and always goes the extra mile to make sure me and my group are properly taken care of. Hibachi chefs are talented and entertaining. Highly recommend!

The Hibachi cooks make this dinner! Great atmosphere and staff. Wasn't the best hibachi I have ever had.

I've been here on more than once and I have yet to be disappointed. The food is always delicious and at fair prices. There are a few things that I have to say about this place. Being raised on the west coast all my life, I've tasted every kind of Japanese delicacy there is, I can't say Umi has the best Japanese food I've had but its definitely good. Id say the food is excellent when the restaurant is not busy. There were times when my sushi was amazing and other times I felt like my sushi was rushed, meaning the rolls would fall apart or the rice was very dry. Other than that I would come back here again.

This place is awesome. Their isn't that much diversity in Columbus MS. This place has a lot of fast food chains but it was nice to see a restaurant like this open. One word, sushi, they have tons of great sushi but if raw fish is not your thing their hibachi style cooking is a gift for the pallet. This place can get expensive depending on what you order but you can split plates and each entry has a large amount of food. If you are nit a big eater most appetizers are big enough to fill you up and are not very expensive. Great atmosphere and great food I have nothing more to say.

An excellent dinner, had the chicken and rice dinner only 12.95. Service was good, a little slow on drink refills but they put on a good show. The portions were large, next time I am going to split with the wife. For the price this is a excellent choice

I miss this place!! Amazing fried rice. Amazing hibachi. Delicious!! Zero complaints.... Sushi is a pretty good selection too. Possibly best in Columbus. Quality!

This place is fantastic! Very good sushi with a lot of meat, some original rolls I haven't seen before. I wasn't a fan of the calamari as the breading was too thick for me. My sister loved her hibachi as well, and it looked as though it was done the "real" style. I've seen too many places cheat where they grill you a chicken breast and cut it up after when you don't sit AT the hibachi table. Also, the beer prices were great! We have a LOT of great sushi places in Houston and I consider myself in-the-know, and this would rank among the top of those, and inexpensive for the quality.
