Service was great but sadly the food was piss poor at best. Ordered the open faced steak sandwich and it was bland and lazily prepared. The baked potato was good, but you can't really mess up a potato.

Was there last night and although the food was ok, the bartender was very intense. When an order or bad tip would come in and he'd yell 'are you f$&@in kidding me.' Maybe If he wasn't being so rude, people would have tipped him better! Several people sitting at the bar were talking about how he was going to blow a gasket at anytime! The bar was kind of busy, but he clearly couldn't handle it. If I go back it will definitely be on a night he isn't working.

I wish I could sit here and rave about how amazing this place is like everyone else has, but I just can't come to terms with agreeing with the majority. Lewis and Clark's is "simply okay" in my opinion. Yes, they have a smörgåsbord of options from All-American food, Mexican, seafood, to Italian. However, for me, it's overkill. I appreciate a place with options, but sometimes there are too many options. When you do have an array of options, I would hope the food would be good, not mediocre. The menu attempts to boast of being able to provide to a wide demographic with prices that are in the $10-$15 range, but unfortunately you don't get the quality you pay for. I ordered a grilled pesto chicken fetticini alfredo. I thought everything would come mixed together. Indeed not so. Instead, I receive a grilled chicken with melted cheese on top of the chicken with spread pesto underneath the cheese. The fetticini came in a side dish which tasted like it had been sitting out for awhile. The chicken was alright, but I kept wondering to myself, "why did I order this when I could have prepped this at home without the cost?" Thank God my date paid for it otherwise I would have pitched a fit to a manager for it's horrible presentation. My date and I sat on the top floor on the patio. It consists of 3 stories with the patio option on each floor. I did like this a lot because it was cool enough outside where a crowd was not out there, and it allowed for a more intimate environment. During the winner, I do believe they close it off because we noticed tarp tacks in the wall where they could be placed. I like the restaurant and its setup, however, they could throw out the whole menu and try to focus on something more with quality and not quantity.

Let me start by saying I won't ask my Varick where to go to eat ever again. main st in st Charles seems to have a lot of decent looking food establishments but this place wasn't one of them. Not very busy at all but service flat out stunk from beginning to end. the food was about as boring and mundane as it gets. Got the Varick recommended Prime Rib. good size piece of meat that looked like it was made 3-4 days prior. I think the Cracker Barrel would have been a better choice and our are service was really weak but still gave the waiter a decent tip as it seems he may have tried but just didn't have the skills to do a good job . Another bummer choice while on business travel. Anywhere else would be better. Eat at your hotel.

First time at the restaurant for a business lunch meeting. The service was very quick and competent. I had the cuban sandwich. very good. The red beans and rice were a great side dish. I will have to return for dinner to check out more of the menu

Not sure why I ate here twice in one month! I ate here a few times a couple years ago and nothing negative stands out. I went wedding dress shopping with my mother, future mother-in-law, and future sister-in-law and we were all starving and needed to grab a quick snack before we went to have our "real" dinner with our men so we stopped in thinking it would be a great place. Our server seemed annoyed the four of us only ordered 3 apps and 2 glasses of wine ($50) sorry dude we could have not came in at all and you wouldn't have just put an extra $12 in your pocket... He basically ignored us in our what could have been a brief visit if he wouldn't have disappeared. He brought our apps and said he would grab us plates so we just sat there and looked at our food for 10mins and finally said F it and dug in. By the time he brought us our plates we were almost done and we didn't eat that fast. A week later I'm in the area with my my fiance and hes starving so I drive him down main street looking for a place thats open and Lewis & Clark's happened to have been open so not saying anything about my negative experience a week prior I smile and park in front. Our waitress this time was friendly and didnt ignore us THANK GOD! She did however have a very obvious hangover and clearly hadnt showered or even brushed her hair. Hopefully she brushed her teeth but based on the thick plaque I saw I don't think she did :[ I worked in the industry for 6 years and no matter what my night was like I always made sure my appearance was presentable. Its pretty gross when the person handling your food is dirty. Im not saying I wont go back but I will NOT go out of my way to eat here again.

I went here for my bachelorette party and my sister in-law had a roach flew out of a potato skin. We never saw a manager about it. I WILL NEVER EAT HERE AGAIN!

I was taken on a date last night to L & C for dinner. My date had made reservations but I dont think we needed them on a Thursday night. We chose to sit outside on the 3rd floor balcony because it was a beautiful night. The balcony had a great view of the street and river. The St. Charles band was also playing so we were seranaded with a little music. Our waitress seemed a little pushy at first. We were on a date ... of course we are going to be talking and not ready to order when we order our drinks. I decided on the Chicken Oscar with steamed veggies and a cesaer salad. I thought the food was very good. Maybe a little over priced but the portions were large and it is dt St. Charles. My date got the salmon and I dont think he was overly impressed but he didn't complain. Overall not a bad little place to eat diner.

We picked Lewis & Clark's for lunch on a Saturday because of its central location on Main Street and its availability for reservations during one of St. Charles' most busiest times of the year - Festival of the Little Hills. We had arrived earlier than our reservation but they were accomodating and got us a great seat on the 2nd floor. The food and atmosphere was great, only thing I would suggest is check on the size of the appetizer you pick because we ordered the onion straws after seeing a basket and our waiter brought us a full order, us not knowing that there was a difference. Service and wait time were excellent and the food tasted amazing.

One word for my experience here tonight: AWFUL. My wife and I took my in-laws here for Mother's Day, and what a mistake that was. We waited an hour and 10 minutes for our food to come out. During that time, our waiter didn't come by ONCE to see how we're doing or to apologize for the long wait. We finally flagged him down to ask what was taking so long, and he said "they make everything from scratch, so it'll just be a little while longer." No "I'm so sorry for your wait, or I'll talk to the manager and see what I can do for you"-- nothing. A simple apology would've gone a long way in that situation. My mother-in-law eventually tracked down the manager, and he was rude and unapologetic. Just then, our food arrived, and the manager said, "Oh, you got your food now" rather rudely. Now about the food... horrible. I ordered the eggplant parmesan which tasted oily and watered down. Had I not been so hungry and pissed off, I would've sent it back. My wife ordered the Canyon (something) salad, and the artichoke hearts were stale and gross. My mother-in-law ordered the white chicken chili which tasted like they poured an entire container of salt in it. Absolutely terrible. She debated sending it back, but by the time we got our food, we were just looking forward to getting out of there. Worst of all, the waiter didn't offer anything to make up for the ridiculously long wait and sub-par meal. The least he could've done was comp our drinks or salad or maybe offer a free dessert for us. Not a damn thing. If I weren't with my in-laws, I would've definitely demanded some kind of concession. Just an all around lousy place. ***UPDATE*** The owner emailed me and offered a sincere apology for our bad experience. I understand that every business experiences "off" days periodically, so I will keep an open mind and give Lewis & Clark's a second chance. The personal response by the owner is very much appreciated. I hope to give the restaurant another try in the future.

This is always a dependable place in St. Charles. It encompasses everything that reminds me of the city: historic charm, prime location, and a place to have a good drink. The stairs are a bit of a climb but on a nice spring day who doesn't love sitting outside in the breeze? That's definitely worth it. I struggled for a while to find "my" dish here but now I think it's the french dip sandwich. It's good, meaty, and cheesy and you can't go wrong with that. I love the chips here and they always pair it up with a pickle. I would try the desserts but I'm always too full to move. I'm not a beer drinker but this is the place in town for me to order an ale. I like a good strong brew and they don't disappoint.

Food portions are large and tasty, we sat outside (the weather was nice) so we had a nice view and ambiance. Hubby had the fish tacos, said they were yummy (warning the sauce they bring with them was pretty spicy, we love spicy so not an issue) My only issue was the food was not as warm as it should of been, seems like it sat under a lamp for a little while before being brought to the table. Will go again, have herd their onion rings are great.

Went on a Sunday night so it was really quiet, but still staffed appropriately. Great food for reasonable prices, and the building/area are rich in history. I got the catch of the day, it was cooked well and served quickly. They also have a great dessert selection!

GREAT PLACE TO TAKE A DATE! Lewis and Clarks on main street in St. Charles is a wonderful place to go for a lunch or dinner date. If we're not at the Boathouse at Forest Park, we're at Lewis and Clarks which I prefer since it is much closer only 10 minutes from my home and office. The decor takes you back in time a bit and the atmosphere is very relaxed you wont hear any loud music or noisy TVs. The food is great as well, I usually get the grilled chicken. The staff is always very friendly and attentive as well! Love this place! Go to Lewis and Clarks today!

This has been one our favorite places to go to over the years. We decided to get food to go from there yesterday. It was nice coming out of there not smelling all cigarette smoky!!! The bartender was super friendly. We had a beer while waiting on our food. We ordered 3 blackened chicken sandwiches without th garnish because we were not planning on eating right away....the garnish makes the sandwich soggy. We got red beans & rice as sides so that would re-heat nicely. We also ordered a large Castlewood Canyon salad w/smoked turkey on it. The salad we soooo good. We really enjoyed it! The sandwiches were ok. Not much to write home about. The sandwiches had been grilled w/some blackened seasoning on the chicken. Grilling that sandwich just does not do it justice. It is so much better when it is blackened in a skillet. The ciabatta bread on the sandwich was good. We will be back!

We dined here with a group of 6 and 2 kids a few weeks ago. I glanced at the menu before we entered the restaurant and noticed that it said "Lewis and Clarks, An American Restaurant." I opened the menu and the first thing I saw was Mexican food.....this was my first tip off that something was wrong. Studying the menu a little more, it seemed like they were offering a really wide variety of items....like TOO many to do well. It was one of the worst meals I have had in years. The place looked dirty. The service was horrible. The server couldnt remember ANY of the beers they had......She looked very young maybe that's why..not sure...We over heard someone say they were shorthanded in the kitchen......second clue. Drinks came out which were weak and small...the beers were not that good. I hear that Trailhead took over and the quality went downhill thereafter. Apps came out and everything tasted bland and like it came out of a can. Spin art dip came out with (what tasted like) canned salsa and soggy chips. I could only take a bite or two. Another guests gumbo looked really weird and disgusting. All of the food looked and tasted like it came out of a bag or can. The food finally came out and everything was way overcooked. The burgers (requested medium) were WELL beyond done. My salmon sandwich was like rubber. Not one of the six adults at the table could finish half their meals and we had not eaten all day. Everyone left still hungry and dissatisfied. The server did take off two of the burgers. I paid for my meal because I just wanted to get out of the place. I'm not really that picky of a person but damn....

I went here for dinner with a friend. The location and service was nice but the food was not of any great quality. It was edible and it allowed for more conversation than usual. I felt the restaurant was setup to be part of a tourist trap.

Very cool decor and I would rate ambiance a bit higher than two stars. The service was also very good and the server was friendly and prompt. She was not overly intrusive and let us enjoy our meals, kept water glasses filled etc. The food was mediocre at best. We had a variety of entree's in our group of four. The presentation was average and all of us had the steamed vegies as our side along with salad. The vegies were steamed broccoli, carrots and caluiflower and were likely a frozen variety. My chicken marsala missed the mark in a big way. It was just a grilled chicken breast with a brown sauce on it. There were few, if any mushrooms and the gravy was thick and heavy. Friend had the salmon and the pork tenderloin which were good. Not sure I would return on another visit to St Charles since it was just meh. This was also a bit over priced for the quality although the portions were generous.

Disappointed. Neat building and upstairs balconies could be nice, but on hot day we stayed inside for lunch. Staff not very energetic this visit - didn't seem to care, although our waitress was good. We waited 45 minutes after placing our order for food to arrive - I think my burger was cooked right at the start and sat under the heat lamp because it was dry, not worth eating and certainly not worth the price. In retrospect I should have sent it back, but I didn't want to delay the rest of the family Others in our group did enjoy their choices, although nothing to rave about. On my next visit to St. Charles I will seek another place.

Great French Dip. Menu is a bit eclectic, they could ditch the Mexican food, doesn't quite fit with what they are trying to do. Awesome location in historic St. Charles, very clean and cute.

Ehhh. My son and I took some friends from Springfield, MO down to Main Street today. It was a perfect early September day and we had to find a place to eat outside. I'll start by saying that I've lived in St. Charles for ten years and I've never found a place on Main Street that is anything better than mediocre. Today's trip to Lewis and Clark's was very typical. Nothing terrible but certainly nothing to write home about. This is a great choice if you want to feel the old town St. Charles ambiance with a great view of the Missouri River and the cobblestone streets. Just go in knowing that this why you are here, not for spectacular food or even average service. Main Street was pretty crowded today and we first attempted to enter Llewellyn's but waited in line for 5 minutes and a hostess never came by so we settled for Lewis and Clark's. We spent our 20 minute wait browsing through $35 t-shirts the Pete's on Main smiley face t-shirt shop. We walked back across the street and were promtly led up to the 3rd floor outdoor balcony. This is where you want to sit if you eat at Lewis and Clark's. The balcony has a great view of the river. If I could seperate my star ratings for the food and the service, I'd give the food a 3 and the service a 2. The food wasn't bad really, just very aveage. It was maybe a half step above your average Ruby O' Fridays fare. I had the blackened chicken sammich which wasn't bad and Jr. ate the kids chicken fingers with fries. No complaints about the food. The service on the other hand was definitely below average. It took our waiter at least 5 minutes to stop by and take our drink order and when I announced that we were ready to order our food also, I was denied the opportunity and told "I only have one free hand". He was holding a glass which I guess prevented him from taking our order at the moment. The food could've come out quicker but we really didn't mind since we were enjoying the perfect weather and the great view. All in all, I was underwhelmed with the Main St. experience as usual. It was exactly what I had expected. Main Street would be a great spot for someone to open a joint that offers excellent food and service, but no one has accomplished that feat as of yet.

My wife and I, along with a few friends went here recently to enjoy a night out. Upon entry, the hosts were nice and we were able to get seated pretty quickly. My wife had the Marinated Tenderloin Kabobs, while I had the Ribeye. We also decided to try the Deep-Fried Mushrooms. They were quite good, you get a nice-sized helping of them as well. My wife, being a mushroom and cheese lover, loved every bit of it. The waitress was very nice and always came over and checked on us to make sure if we needed anything else or how everything was. The food...well, without question is was excellent. Cooked exactly to request and just delicious. I have been there numerous times and I have never been disappointed in the service or food. We'll be going back again soon to enjoy another meal with them :) So, score a grade of "A" for Lewis & Clarks...it's well earned. (One other thing I can tell you...if it's towards the end of the week or if you have a large number of guests...make sure you set reservations...big help)

Took my daughter when she was in town recently. Horrible food. She ordered the shish kabob. The steak was raw, the veggies were not grilled at all. Overall, very disappointed. Won't be back.

What a shame. Since finding out later it is run by the same Trailhead Brewing Company restaurant nearby, I am not amazed this place is bad. Look the ambiance is great, and alone is 4 stars for the nice view outside in this incredible weather right now. But I have a few gripes. 1. Food. Mediocre to say the least. The philly cheese steak had MARINARA sauce? WTF. AND where were the sautéed onions??!! I found ONE strip. This sandwich tasted more like a poor version of an Italian meatball sandwich smothered is foul cheese. The Creole spicy rice was warm, mushy, not fresh at all and didn't feel right. We also had an order of the French dip sandwich that reeked of spoiled thin, floppy slices meat that appeared purchased from a bad supplier of Arby's. The dip was diluted and weak. The beans sides were flavorless. The highlight of both meals ironically was the French bread which was decent but not great. The portions weren't large. 2. Service. Waited and waited outside with the pager device they supply you. It never rang. The host went through 7 parties before I went inside to find out the problem. She said she paged my device and called my name. Look, thats impossible... I was next to the front door. I came in because I heard her call the guy after me. I looked at her roster and she crossed me off as "gone". WTF. Like Trailhead, some of the staff looked confused like they were out of place or out of sync. Our waitress was ok at least but our host was lost. 3. Lighting. Got outdoors but I can't see my food! The light above is blown out! Had a hard time eating in that light. Overall, a restaurant should be complacent with nice views. For God's sake, when did good food lose importance? It's a shame. They could do so much better and it all starts with hiring a quality chef. Really, its not that hard to do. Save your money and time. Eat somewhere that has great food and better price.

I had the French onion soup, way to much cheese on top, onions were over cooked, and the broth was very very salty. Couldn't finish it, was drinking too much water because of the salt. Also had the club sandwich, bacon was tough, maybe over cooked, otherwise good.

  • Ben M.

First I have to say the food was delicious. We sat at the bar. The service was beyond terrible. Not only were both bartenders curt they were occasionally just rude. Not only to us, but we saw them being pretty short with everyone. Really a shame because it's obvious effort was made to create a nice ambiance and a great kitchen. I would not choose or recommend paying someone to treat me like this.

My experience at this restaurant was the epitome of mediocre. I dined here for a rehearsal dinner, actually, but despite what you're thinking, this wasn't your ordinary buffet style rehearsal dinner or a "choose from A or B" kind of meal. The father of the bride actually paid for everyone to get anything they ordered from the regular menu! When we heard this, we got excited and knew it would be a better meal than expected. We were pretty disappointed. I had the club sandwich and the bread was so dry and crusty that it made the whole sandwich feel hard and stale. The menu is pretty diverse which seems cool at first, but then it feels like they spend so much time making everything from american grill food to Mexican, to Italian, that they can't master even one thing. Everything is just so-so. One of our friends had a chimichanga which he said wasn't good, and my husband's bison's burger wasn't anything special. I was also disappointed in the way they handled having a rehearsal dinner. We weren't placed in a completely separate room or floor. Instead, we were all given tables seated near each other in the regular dining area. Perhaps that's the way the bride and groom wanted it to be, but it seems like if you're going to pay to have a private event....it should be private. Overall, not a horrible dining experience by any means, but I wouldn't pay to go back. There are plenty of other fine restaurants in the St. Charles area. Trailhead, anyone?

My boyfriend and I ordered the onion rings for an appetizer. It was ENORMOUS for two people. We probably got through a third of it. and they were more like onion strings, which is fine unless you're expecting big rings (which I was). For my entree, I ordered a chicken quesadilla. It was really messy but really tasty, and it came with guacamole, sour cream and salsa (large amts of each). It was priced high for me considering reheating fried food is gross, and we didn't save anything. They also charged my boyfriend's card 3 times on accident and mine no times. Fixable, but annoying.

Would I come here for the food? Not really. How about the awesome view if I sit up top on the outside deck? You bet. It really is a gem from an aesthetic standpoint. One of my friends had her wedding rehearsal dinner here once. They said we could order whatever we wanted. That would normally have excited me, but not so much here. It's very standard fare. Sort of TGI Fridays or Applebees. I got the grilled mahi mahi sandwich and it wasn't bad. When you pair that with an iced tea on a summer afternoon, you don't really need a five-star experience.

I ordered the Shrimp Scampi... 8-9 medium sized shrimp soaked in garlic butter... NO FLAVOR AT ALL! The plate was hot, but the shrimp & sauce wasn't. My wife ordered the regular fried shrimp, which really had no flavor either. The roll & salad were fine, but that's not what I paid $40 for.

i'm giving this place 2 stars not because it was terrible, but because Yelp! rates 2 stars as "Meh. I've experienced better." and that's what i would say. I was here on business from California and Im not the pickiest eater. but since the lady at the front desk of the hotel that we were staying at (the Country Inn & Suites on Main St.) recommended this place (as well as Trailhead - they seem to be owned by the same people), I did a Yelp! search and found 9 reviews, averaging 4 of 5 stars. cant be bad. and it wasnt. it was just MEH. the food was bland but not gross. i would think something like chilli's or applebee's would be just a half step higher in terms of service, decore, and flavor. but the prices were very reasonable (a 12 oz prime rib for under $20). the next day we were told by people who live in st. charles that there were much better places to go to and that we should have gone somewhere else - and that no one really understands why there are so many ppl that love that place because it's just "Meh."

My mother and I ate here on Sunday around 1pm. It was a beautiful day and we sat on the top floor patio. I loved their Iced Tea! My mom had the Cuban Sandwich and I had a Bleu Cheese and Bacon burger with Fries, Med-Rare. My burger was this, cooked to the right temp and the fries were fresh and good! I think the interior definitely needs some TLC but I've never had bad service. My mom and I have been going here since I was in like 1st or 2nd grade and we always have a good experience but I also don't come on busy weekend nights.

Nice place - food is pretty good - prices are low for food so that's a plus and - while I'm not a big fan of Trailhead beers I think it's a bonus that Trailhead's beers are at least here on tap - this place is worth the effort every other blue moon or so

I have been going to lewis & clark's since I was a child, so for over 20 years, yes I did say 20 years. Anytime I need a good solid meal, I go here. No surprises. Just good, consistent food. If it is nice out, ask to sit outside on the deck. This option gives you the chance to overlook main street & partially see the river. Also, if you are going on the weekend, call ahead to make reservations. They are also good for large groups. I have had several group meetings here when I was in graduate school. The menu is well - rounded for those who are vegetarian, like meat, fish or just beer. I personally love the french fries. The service is also very good. Growing up and going here often the turnover rate of their staff was low. The same faces (some still there) are working at Lewis & Clark.

I think of this as the nicer, fancier, more expensive Trail Head. I mean, it's good and all, but I always wonder if I would be better off just paying for the Happy Hour specials down the street and saving a buck. I love the outdoor setting here. The deck upstairs is amazing and almost makes the prices worth it. The view is beautiful but often, this place is packed so it can be difficult to get a table outside on a nice night. However, if you come here and you can get one, take it. It's the best thing about this restaurant. I have never been all that impressed by the food here, nor have I been impressed by the food choices. It's mostly standard food and nothing exciting. Now, the restaurant is decent, don't get me wrong, and I always have a pleasant experience when I do come here.

The biggest thing this place has going for it is the ambience and the quasi al fresco dining on the upper levels. I find Main St. St. Charles in general to not be a very good place to dine for anybody who is looking for more than basic fare - it seems that many venues are high on the ambience and historical vibe but weak on food. L and C is a prime example - I went there with my gf at the request of others, probably the 6th or 7th time I have been there in about 3 years (mostly because of events like these). Our server was good, one of the better ones I have had there. But the food is bland, pedestrian, and uninspired. I wonder if they worry much about any of that because the know the next tourist bus will be decamping soon, so no need to build a clientele. Better choices on Main St. are Magpie's and Bradden's. Evene trailhead seems to do better with food, and the ownership is related. Please...get the memo on the food, L and C!

Having grown up in St. Charles, this restaurant is very familiar to me. I love the setting; on Main Street's cobblestone streets and only a short walk from the riverfront, this is a great place to spend an evening. The menu as a whole might not seem too exciting, but their famous white chili is amazing. I'm not sure exactly what makes it different, but I insist that you try it if you visit. The gumbo is also really good--just the right amount of spice, and it's thick and rich enough to be your meal. I also just really like the restaurant's atmosphere. With three stories and a great patio overlooking Main Street, it just has a nice feel to it. A must-visit if you are in St. Charles.

The menu needs an overhaul, it's the SAME menu for the last decade or so & with all the new interest in rustic, organic & farm to table cuisine L&C should take advantage their captive audiance & try something new. This place used to be the schizzle but the last few times I have not been impressed. However, the blue-hairs that arrive on the tour busses which park on the lot across the street might be.

I had a good salad and a good beer, but my quesadilla was pretty blah. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their meal. The burger was pretty good. Like other reviewers have said, it's pretty generic, but not bad. The service was nice, too.

We ate here for the 1st time this past sunday and we had a great experience .....The decor was so very nice, comfortable and different than usual restaurants it was 3 levels !!! My husband had the chesseburger and it was excellent !! Very tender and had great flavor which is hard to find a burger this good these days... I had the chicken tender strips and loved them as well ! I really enjoyed the sweet and sour sauce. the chicken was very moist and had very good flavor service was good it is a bit $$ for what you get but the food is good so we will be back for sure many times !!!

A restaurant that is an extension of the Trailhead Brewery, which is further down main street in historical St. Charles. Has the microbrews from the brewery, and an expansive menu compared to the menu at Trailhead. Favorites of mine include the Philly Cheesesteak, the sweet onion ring basket, and the white chicken chili. Great location and ambiance on the old St. Charles main street.

the food was average, as well as the service. could of been a bad night or something , but no one seem to friendly there. i ordered the ribeye steak, cooked medium rare. not very exciting, steak was flat, taste was bland. dont get the steaks. beer was good however, as well as the artichoke quesadilla. over all, the food was not too expensive, but not great either. i wouldnt recommended eating here.

Great restaurant. The menu is pretty generic, but has a few twists and surprises. My personal favorite is the white chili. They'll give out the recipe, but I've never been able to make it that way at home. I also recommedn the spinach artichoke dip and onion strings. Oh, and the eggplant sandwich!

Lewis & Clark's is a decent mid-priced restaurant with a fairly broad menu ranging from burgers and tacos to good quality steaks and chicken. Also has some fish selections. Serves the micro brews from the Trailhead Brewery down the street which are excellent. Not gourmet by any means, but certainly good and worth a visit if you are in the St. Charles area.

Ok, I've been here about 20 times, and here's the scoop. The food is only OK. The gumbo is fantastic and spicy. The side salads are quite good. The dinner dishes are nothing to rave about. The Trailhead beer is fabulous and a big reason to eat here--the other being the atmosphere. You must eat here during the holidays when it is all decorated up for Christmas! Eat on the second or third floor looking out over historical St. Charles. That is what makes this place so special!!

Well maybe I ordered the wrong thing. Fried mushrooms were just fried mushrooms over cooked with Colby Cheese melted over them. No sauce to dip them in. Hawaiian chicken was pretty bland roll was cold would not melt the butter and the red beans lacked and bunch or favor. The garden salad was out of the bag

Located in a rustic part of St Charles. Old, off-smelling restaurant with slow service, slower kitchen, and the food was actually the worst part. The server was nice, but too busy running up and down three flights of sticky carpet covered stairs to refill our drinks. The only reason I gave it two starts was a because the onion rings were average. Why does the entire STL area smell so bad?

Hosted a wedding rehearsal dinner here for 36 people and it was terrific! Our servers Jeff and Erin did a great job of taking orders and keeping track of our 2 alcoholic drink limit of 2 per person. I really appreciate how they asked my husband and I for direction at every course, and served everyone with a smile :) We had a great space on the upper level and it was a bit tight but set up nicely. I had the Medallion bacon-wrapped fillet with green beans and Caesar salad, and it was like cutting butter and cooked perfectly! I would definitely return here if I ever come back to the area.

I came here on a lunch break with some coworkers in the middle of a long day of training. It was suggested by someone more familiar with the area as a local staple. I like the atmosphere of Lewis & Clark's, although it was a little confusing at first with the different dining areas inside and outside on different levels. Our server was courteous, but not too friendly; it seemed like she was having a tough day, even though it was only lunchtime. I ordered the eggplant stack, which was kind of like a sandwich, only with fried eggplant instead of bread. In the middle, it had spinach, cucumbers, tomatoes, and Swiss cheese ($8.99). It took longer than we expected for our food to arrive (we had a party of about 5), even though the restaurant wasn't busy... maybe it was because we were all watching the clock to get back to work on time. As for my sandwich, well, I ate it. I was hungry and it was what I ordered. I didn't like it as much as I thought I would from reading the description on the menu. It was hard to keep it all together and it just didn't seem like the flavors were that great together. I would be open to going there again to see if a different dish would hit the spot for me and to see if the speed of the food coming up improves. It's a 2.5 / 5 for me this time.

We came to this place on a business trip and I was excited to try it because a coworker said it was pretty good. I was not impressed. The weather was nice so we sat out on the patio which was very pretty because you go a nice view of the Missouri River. We ordered the appetizer sampler which was ok. Come with mushrooms, artichoke dip, potatoes skins, shrimp, crab rangoons, and I think something else... It was a lot of options for only 14 dollars and they were all good. After we ordered appetizers they came out we ate them and waited another 30 minutes to order. I will say they only had one waiters and the entire patio was cool. They just needed more people. I had the mahi mahi with veggies. I literally got one carrot in my bowl and the rest was broccoli. The mahi mahi was so over cooked that I couldn't even finish it. It had good flavor it was just way over cooked.

Another months later review... It's a pretty big place. Sit upstairs for a great view of historic Main Street. This vegetarian who isn't that into salad had to choose between some three menu items. That doesn't happen everywhere. I think it was a cheese quesadilla. Good mixed drinks at reasonable prices. I prefer the Winery of the Little Hills, but Lewis & Clark's and Trailhead are both nice options.

Ugh. I had hoped for better. Waiter was too busy. Need more staff. He was grouchy and not thrilled with his job. I made the mistake of asking to substitute mash potatoes for Rice and got the NO! And it all went to hell in a hand basket. Thankfully it guests were worth the visit. We will not be back.

By far the best place we have eaten during our trip to St. Louis. I rarely think anyplace is worth 5 stars but I nor my coworker could think of any reason to give them any less. Located in a cute historic district we were seated immediately in the upstairs area. Not too noisy but you could tell the diners where enjoying themselves. I had the chicken teriyaki with steamed vegetables and soup of the day...chicken noodle. The soup tasted homemade not sure if it was but tasted great. The chicken was moist and tender on a bed of rice cooked just right. The veggies were plentiful and also cooked right, often times veggies get overcooked and mushy but these where not. For dessert I had the salted Carmel ice cream with just the right mix of Carmel to ice cream. My coworker had the BBQ shrimp with rice and red beans with a house salad. She loved it all but warned the BBQ shrimp is spicy hot so beware. She finished with the homemade brownie ala mode and enjoyed every bite. What made the meal all the better was the terrific service we received from our waitress Sydney. If you are in the area check it out.

Have been going here for years - love their chicken-apple-bacon quesadilla and their white chicken chili. During the summer the balcony gives great views and the beer and breeze flow great together. Also like the creole chicken sandwich.

The air conditioned seating area was nice. I ordered the Eggplant Stack which was under seasoned. The eggplant seemed to be fried incorrectly, leaving the eggplant tasting greasy. The bread pudding had a nice sauce but likewise lacked seasoning and flavor. However, bread pudding comes from a culture of bland food, but not that bland.

Restaurant is located in a cool part of old historic st Charles but the food and experience was horrible. The kitchen took over an hour to cook and serve us our food and we continued to wait to the point we almost go up and left. The only thing that saves this from being a one star was the pork chop was actually good but the rest of the food was horrible. NOT RECOMMENDED

A very cookie cutter experience overall. Just honestly not that impressed. The atmosphere was very plain and uninspired along with the menu. We started with the spinach and artichoke appetizer. The spinach dip itself was very bland and the salsa was downright disgusting. The only saving grace was the absolute delicious chili con queso (which was just a bonus not supposed to be the main event). My chicken, bacon and apple quesadilla was actually pretty good. My bfs prime rib sandwich was way too fatty but the taste was ok overall. I had "the Clark" to drink and if you go here I would definitely recommend it. Our server was very kind but the service was slow especially because they were not very busy at all. For the price especially I was underwhelmed and would recommend you venture elsewhere to dine in old St. Charles.

One of my FAVORITE restaurants, I'm going to say I've even there 6 times just since last year and I only moved here from 1 1/2 hours away in August. This was my ex - boyfriend and mine "place" the year before and the food is so good, I'm still coming back to this day. It can be crowded and busy, but it just tells you how fantastic the food is! I've never ordered anything I didn't just LOVE, but my favorite is the mushrooms covered in cheese (appetizer, but a meals worth of food for the price) and ask for ranch dressing if they forget to offer (they never have forgotten to offer with me). You will not regret coming in here despite some of the negative reviews I see on here (please use your brains people; if you don't ask..........).

This place was a lot better than I expected. As previously stated, it's a big place with multiple floors. Lots of stairs, but a neat ambiance. Now for the food...the fried mushrooms were wonderful and huge. It was pretty much a meal in it's own right. I had a Reuben for dinner, and it was pretty good. I would definitely recommend it. My wife had a chicken dish, which she enjoyed. The service was quick and snappy. The server had a good sense of humor. I don't go to St. Charles Main Street very often, but when I do this place will be on the choice list. of eats.

Stopped by Lewis & Clark's this past weekend for lunch, was seated upstairs and have a nice view of the river. There is also a small 3rd floor outside patio, which would be great during the summer. As far as food goes I ordered the Chicken, Apple, and Bacon Quesadilla, which is a basic tortilla, with Monterey Jack, Bleu Cheese, Chicken, Apple, and Bacon served with Honey-Lime Sour Cream. I really enjoyed this however I could help but think that this was some standard bagged tortilla from the local supermarket. They really could have went above and beyond by offering something with a little bit more taste, it seemed to take away from what was inside the Quesadilla, all of which went together really well. After writing my review I was contacted by the owner for my opinion on the tortilla shells and how to improve the quesadilla, I replied with my thoughts. For that I am willing to give Lewis & Clarks another go, I wish more business owners were like the owners at Lewis & Clarks, they really do care about their customers thoughts and opinions, that earned them an extra star from me.

Went to a later dinner around 8-9pm. No wait on a beautiful Saturday night. Balcony had plenty of tables open even. THATshould have clued me in. Used to eat here 2-3 weekends a month but that was 3 years back. Decor inside is still 1970 & uninspiring but they finally did something about the terminally rocking tables on the 3rd floor porch outside by bolting the tables to the floor. Yes they are level and stable but no longer can a group of 6-8+ just pull tables together. Food was.bad. It is hard to screw up a chicken quesadilla or a grilled chicken sandwich and garden salad but the cooks did...yes cooks NOT chefs by any stretch of the word. I would expect this quality level from a 15 yr old with microwave access and surely not expect to pay $30. Warm but not hot, thousand island dressing that was turning, bland quesadilla. I would rate the quality a tiny step above a self made pb&j...barely Server was overworked but in the entire time managed to stop by just 2 times and one of those was to deliver the food AND the check together. On a street full of dining opportunities I believe I will choose differently next time and encourage others to do the same.

I came here today for lunch today for the first time. I love Main Street and was looking for a new place to try. I got the half chicken salad sandwich with bacon and white chicken chili. It was delicious. I also ordered a hot chocolate for a very cold day out, it truly hit the spot. We got seated right away its quite small in their dining area I will say that but great service and loved the food. Its a bit pricey for a sandwich and soup to me, but it was yummy so I was happy with it.

The setup is very different. It was neat to see the two different floors. This location can handle a large group. The waitress was terrific and our service was hands down awesome. I would recommend this place to friends but I wouldn't be in a hurry to come back. Everything was just ok. The spinach dip and queso were pretty good.

I only gave it a 3 because of its location. Its centrally located in St Charles and nice quaint little town. I was not impress with my meal. Just an ordinary ribeye steak. Salad was not fresh. I can say I've been there.

We were on Main Street about three weeks ago and decided at 5pm that we'd give Lewis & Clark's a try since we've never been there. We walked in and there was another family standing in front of the podium waiting to be seated. Behind the desk there was what appeared to be the manager and the hostess pouring over the table map, apparently unable to figure out how to seat someone for an early dinner. I stood at the podium for 10 minutes and not once did the two employees even look at me to say "we'll be with you". I finally looked at my wife and asked her to check out the bar. She said there appeared to be tables available but there was only a bartender and no waiters so she doubted that was a good idea. In the meantime one of the employees said "what about this table?" and the second one said "they don't even have their food yet." At which point the first one said "didn't they come in an hour ago" and second one said "yea." There's your clue of a quality establishment. The employees are obviously out of their element so I try to be nice and let them work it out as I stand at the ready. Another five minutes goes by without them saying a word and a lady walks in with her fur coat, stands beside me and says "we need a table for 4". The hostess finally looks up and says "certainly, we'll be with you in just a second." At which point I exclaim "Am I dead? Is this honestly happening? You see me, right?" Everyone in the foyer looks like a bunch of bees that have just been smoked out. I look at my wife and say "we're not eating here" and out we went. If you can't even acknowledge someone at 5pm you shouldn't be in the restaurant business. We'll never try this place again while it has the same name, which is a shame since it's an interesting concept if executed properly.

We have been coming here to eat for several years now, and through 2 owners, so they must be doing something right. Some things i go back to repeatedly, others are better left alone. Castlewood canyon salad, Ribeye steak sandwich, french dip, chicken teriyaki, and the fettuccine seem to be our go-to items. Today was the Ribeye and the Castlewood salad. Both were delicious, as they always are. Haven't tried the soups. Coffee could be better. Microbrews are plentiful. Overall a good place - I often recommend it.

This place has gone downhill and IF I do go back I'll stick to the white chili which is to me is their "staple" item and the only thing I've had that is good in the last few times I've eaten here. The chicken stir fry was bad. The vegetables were carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli in huge chunks, almost raw, and no seasoning. Bad Chinese buffet-type food. Brought out of town clients twice for lunch in the past few months and they commented that they really enjoyed the Main Street experience and atmosphere. The sandwiches and salads were ok. I wanted them to see historic Main Street on their visits to our area and get some decent food and Lewis & Clark's is passable for lunch but I will try another place next time.

Context: a group of about a dozen of us from work made dinner reservations for a Tuesday at 6:30. Upon arrival we were seated immediately in a small room at a table designed for 8 so were pretty cramped. The waiter immediately mentioned he was just learning his trade and though his lack of knowledge of the couple of microbrews and several of the dishes on the menu was fine for a slow Tuesday night. He should of proactively gone over the specials of the evening and furthermore didn't know them when asked. Also, he needed to be more diligent about keeping water glasses full. OJT on a Tuesday night is fine, but he would of crashed and burned on a busy Saturday. The seasonal microbrew by Shafaly (sp?), a pumpkin ale, I had was a tasty balance of spice, pumpkin hints and hops. A little flatter than I like, but perhaps that's intentional for this style of ale. No starters were ordered. My entrée, the chicken pesto with fettuccine alfredo was a huge letdown from the moment I saw it. The poor little butterflied chicken breast looked like something off a Cornish game hen. Every bit of moisture had been grilled out of it and it took on the size and texture of a piece of chicken jerky (sans flavor). By the time I got hold of it, as we were a larger table and I understand the challenges with this, the small slice of mozzarella cheese on top of perhaps a 1/2 tablespoon of pesto had long since hardened to its formerly refrigerated self. What was claimed to be garlic bread was just as disappointing. A decent sized piece of French bread but it had what appeared to be a dab of roasted garlic in the middle. Two stars for very nice atmosphere, gorgeous neighborhood location by the Missouri River, and a tasty beer. The rest was an uninspired eating experience to which I will neither subject myself again or suggest to others.

Quality has decreased... Haven't been here in a while and decided to go there for dinner and food was very mediocre.Fried mushrooms were very over cooked and topped with a melted cheddar that were only on the middle mushrooms. Dinner came and was very bland, Caesar salad had way to much dressing and the chicken salad sandwich had no taste. Server was very polite as was the rest of the staff only wish the food was better.

Some co-workers and I visited Lewis & Clark's for a Thursday lunch. We were seated promptly upstairs and greeted quickly and courteously by our waitress. Most of order salads or burgers. I ordered a Club Salad. A word to the wise - this salad is HUGE! It's an oversized dinner plate piled high with greens, grilled chicken, bacon, egg, cheese, and tomatoes. And they give you a bread side, which once you see the salad, is laughable. I'd say the $10.29 price tag is more than fair for the amount of food you get. Our waitress was friendly and attentive to just the right level, and the abundance of natural light made for a nice afternoon away from the office. I'm not often out in the St. Charles area, but I'd definitely consider returning given the opportunity when I'm nearby.

This was a go to place when I lived in he area 10 yrs ago. Times have changed! 5 of us dined there last night. Disappointment starting with the drinks. One of them came out with a long brown hair hanging out of the glass. Then we ordered app combo platter. Food wasn't great but acceptable. However one of the plates on the table had sticky "stuff" all over it so we had to wait again for a clean item. 4 of the 5 of us ordered rib eyes. No one had a decent cut of meet. They are clearly pricing their food on the high end and to deliver fatty tough steaks to all of us was bad. We all got bread pudding for dessert which was actually quite good. It would have been better however if another staff member wasn't pushing a small vacuum around us at 8:30 so he could end his shift and go home. Never again. Too bad because it used to be special.

The hubs and I went in kind of late tonight; after closing up shop post festival, we wanted somewhere we could grab a good bite to eat within walking distance (we own a shop on main st). We were seated right away, as they have ample seating, and grabbed a couple of drinks. They have a decent drink menu, and even have a 'real' dark beer option. We both ordered salad and the steamed vegetables and creole rice with grilled chicken. It was delicious! I love the spice of the rice and the side of salsa with the melty cheese on top. The food is served in very generous portions, we both had enough to take home for tomorrow's lunch. And we got rolls with both our salad and meals. Overall, great value for the quality and amount of food we got. Our server was also cute and friendly, which also helps! Keep up the good work!

This restaurant is HUGE, spannning four floors, and there's outdoor seating on every level. It's bright and cheery with plenty of windows affording a view of Main Street and the river. I've never had a club sandwich. Got one today ($9.49), and it was fabulous! Turkey, ham, prime rib, bacon, Cheddar, Monterey Jack, Swiss, tomato and lettuce on toasted white. I got the mayo on the side. What got me to order this sandwich was the addition of prime rib and three different cheeses!! It was intriguing. I opted for fries as the side, and they were fabulous crispy, crunchy -- not limp and lame. The pickle spear was huge, fresh and crunchy dillness!! My college chum got the same thing, and we both enjoyed a diet cola to go along with lunch. Now I see why there are toothpicks in this sandwich. It's soooo thick, that's the only way to hold it together. And it's a challenge to get it in the mouth. But it was delicious with such fresh and tasty ingredients! Service was good and timed well. I had a to-go vessel of half my sandwich and 2/3 of the fries. There are two things I don't understand about a club sandwich: Why the extra piece of bread? Why do these rather mundane ingredients taste so good together?

I thought L and C was supposed to be a "nicer" dining experience? Food was slow on this Monday Memorial Day afternoon. Waiter seemed aggravated and more intent on half sweeping around us at 330 pm. Food was bland and boring. This place looks dingy and unkempt. Disappointed. :(

Lewis & Clark's is a great place. My grandpa takes my sisters and I to lunch here every year a few days after Christmas before we wander down the gorgeous cobblestone on Main Street, so it has a special place in my heart. If you ever see the giant round table tucked in a corner on the second floor... that's our table. Service is consistently good and our servers seem to get better with every visit! You can't go wrong with any of the soups and salads, and the Mexican section of the menu is pretty nice... fish tacos, chalupas, chimichangas, etc. They also have nine different burgers and the mushroom burger deserves five stars alone (it has American, Swiss, sauteed mushrooms, caramelized onion, roasted garlic mayo. So good.) The sandwiches section is where this place really shines. French dip, eggplant stack, the club (my personal favorite), pesto chicken, ribeye steak... yeah. And the fries? Don't even get me started. Aside from all that they have a great kids menu and a nice sized beer and wine list. Those two things obviously shouldn't be paired together. I've only been for lunch and it's always been so fun & the food consistently good. Put your name in because there's a wait (especially around the holidays) and walk up and down Main while you wait for your table. Such a gem!

  • Stewart P.

I've been here a few times now and it's consistently the same. Like Patt says, it's a huge place and you have to wonder about the wait staff that has to handle those stairs. I only go here for two things ... the view from the top floor porch which looks out over main street and the mud pie, both are excellent and fun. I do in fact get other food, usually a sandwich of some type, always pretty decent but that is a side attraction. When the weather is great and the street is active, the porch is a great place to hang out with a good friend or a fun date. Make the climb and ask for a table outside. You will like it. And if you like mud pie, for me it's the best I've had.

Just ok. Okay so I've been here twice before and both times I got sandwiches. They were alright. Not bad, but I was never pining to come back. And I never felt the need to write a Yelp review until today. I went today for dinner and I got the Chicken Pesto. Trying to mix it up. The menu made it seem like I was going to get a lot of food, a big plate of pasta with a big hunk of garlic bread and a yummy juicy chicken breast on top! WRONG. A little dinky cup of pasta which was not cooked all the way so it was nice and crunchy! My tiny half slice of garlic bread was BURNT. And a dry chicken breast which was literally like thrown on the plate, horrible presentation and no flavor. My friend got the fish tacos and at first she was angry because she only got two! But couldn't even finish them because they were so bad. But hey, our service was good. If you MUST come here, just stick to the sandwiches.

Not bad but wouldn't go out of my way to come here. Went on a Monday afternoon with family and from the start we had an issue. The host was nowhere to be found. We waited quite sometime just for someone to even acknowledge that we were there and a couple who was there before we arrived ended up walking out in haste, ouch! Eventually one of the waitresses seated us but not without us overhearing a verbal altercation between some of the wait staff about the hostess issue. Could have been an off-moment but it clearly didn't bode well. At least they sat us on a higher level next to a window. One thing that I found off putting was the smoke from the bar filtering out a bit into the entryway. This alone is enough to keep me from ever coming back. Can MO just get with the times and ban smoking in restaurants/bars already?! The service was sufficient and the food decent. I ordered a burger partially because I thought it would be a safe choice. Everything about the burger was quite good but the bun was not great. It was some sort of dry ciabatta roll. All in all, not terribly memorable.

I used to think of this restaurant as being a St. Charles landmark, but after tonight I don't think I can return. The service was VERY slow. It took about 40 minutes to get our food. I ordered chicken stir-fry. I expected Japanese-style vegtables, but instead got an assortment of my least favorite American vegtables ... brocoli, cauliflower, and carrots. There was an excessive amount of those and not much rice or chicken. The food my wife ordered was pretty bland. There are plenty of other restaurants on Main Street and I'll take my business elsewhere.

  • Jeffrey S.

This place used to be one of the better casual restaurants in St. Charles, but it seems to be on the decline in recent years. The menu is more or less unchanged with few items that could really be considered imaginative or unique to this establishment...the White Chili being a notable and very tasty exception. The menu is quite varied, but perhaps too much so. Rather than being known for doing a few things very well, Lewis & Clark's seems to be striving for doing a lot of different things merely adequately. It's not bad by any stretch, but it's also not the kind of place that I would go out of my way to visit anymore.

    (3)
  • Mark G.

Not a bad place to stop for a burger. The fact that they have a sriracha burger with fresh jalapenos on the menu makes them pretty cool in my book. Red beans and rice were far tastier than I expected them to be.
