Honestly, I couldn't agree more with Katie D.'s evaluation of the place. My experience there was pretty much identical to hers down to the last detail. Lemaire's is a fantastic little place to eat as long as you're alright with eating in a dingy little dive that's seen better days, probably in the early 50s. Chipped and cracked paint, booths with cracked vinyl, and chipped tables abound, and it's a wonder the place passes health inspection. It's not dirty, it's not grimy, it's just very poorly-maintained and has not aged well in the least. The plus side for this is that they will be moving to Broadway before terribly long, into the old Hush Puppies building, and hopefully that will revitalize this place. The only other real gripes I have about it, matching Katie D.'s, is that the waitstaff is pretty terrible about sitting down and chatting with regulars they know and ignoring the irregulars they don't. Twice my girlfriend and I ran out of water--which, with Cajun food, is a terrible, terrible thing--and waited over five minutes each time for refills. "But Kevin," you're asking your monitor aloud because you're weird like that, "If it's so bad, why did you eat there?" The answer, my strange friend that talks to inanimate objects, is because the food there is fantastic, and not only is it so delicious, it's cheap. $5.95 for the catfish dinner is better than you can find elsewhere, and it's a 5-piece 5-piece meal. No, that's not a typo--there are 5 pieces of catfish that are deliciously seasoned and oh-so-perfectly fried, but it also comes with baked beans, slaw, hush puppies, and Cajun rice. Fantastic purchase for the price. Cash only, so bring a wallet as well as your most casual attire. And like Katie suggested, take a shower when you're done. You'll feel better.

pros: -Best catfish I have ever had in my entire life. Bouncy, hot, fresh, white, and lacking that foul muddy taste. -Great lunch prices. con: -everything seems to be fried in old oil. My throat was coated for approx 12 hours after and I couldn't cough that feeling away nor drink enough cold water to flush it out. My lungs felt coated with the stuff. Not sure if it was a personal allergy or what, but that was a super downside that I have never experienced before. -The interior decor cannot hide from its shoe store past, with many of the fixtures still in place. -They need to also consider making it not feel like one, giant, uncomfortably open room. I will no doubt be back in the future for the great fish, but there's no telling how I'll feel afterward.

The only reason why I went here to begin with....was because of the reviews...which to my surprise are irrelevant now, because this place is garbage. I have depended on yelp users to guide me through some decent dining experiences in my travels. I am extremely disappointed at how much this place has been celebrated on this site. If I had a pet pig, I still would not feed him this food. I tried a sampler meal where I had, hush puppies, catfish, oysters, and shrimp; the coleslaw was warm and the rice was cold..? hmmm just simply nasty. I returned to my hotel, and shared my experience with a local...and it seems as if Lamaire's used to be much better back when the founders lived...the offspring's of this couple are running the place now, and its sad to say that this couple's legacy has gone to sh*t. I will now be much more careful, of these star ratings in the future...now I have to run because I feel like puking again.

As you can read......Not for the White Napkin Yuppies. If you are use to the Capitol Grill... This place ain't for you. But.... If you want great catfish.... You have come to the right place. Get the 8 piece. Very good

The place is tired and probably needs to close... I try to find the silver lining in things but there is none here. Where do I start? The gumbo was watery like chicken broth. If there was roux used in it I would be surprised. The catfish was chewy. I felt like the whole meal was microwaved. Our waitress was not knowledgeable about their menu, or how Cajun food should be. We were brought in by a restaurant.com coupon so that saved us a bit on the bill, but I still left feeling very mad because I felt like I just wasted 30 bucks after the coupon. Do not waste your money here. I heard it was good when it was owned by the original owner but whoever is running it now is running it into the ground.

Lemaire's has been in Sedalia for decades, but I haven't been since they moved locations. We'd had good food at the old location, but not great food in the past. I was craving catfish, so we decided to give it a try. It was so awesome! I had a seafood plate that had catfish, fried oysters, shrimp, and deviled crab. The shrimp was edible, but not fantastic. I've never liked their hushpuppies, but everything else was delicious. My family is from the Gulf, so I know what good seafood is supposed to taste like. This was good!

I've never written a review before and this place was so terrible I felt I was doing a injustice to all yelpers by not calling this place out for exactly what it is: overpriced crap. We just left here and, seriously, all I can think about are ways to shut this place down. I was really excited to eat here, but, once we got the food, it was a complete nightmare. We ordered the the crawfish for appetizer. Pretty cheap - 6 bucks - so, I wasn't expecting anything grand, but DAMN, could they have at least thawed the shit out before serving it? Each tail was still frozen! We sent it back and the server returned it 3 minutes later, which I can only assume was freshly out of the microwave. Still gross. Didn't eat it or bother complaining more, because this place is definitely the kind of place that would spit in your food. I heard the cook get an attitude when we returned our still frozen appetizer. For the meal, we both ordered the seafood platter. I was expecting something pretty solid for $15, but, shock of shocks...COMPLETE LET DOWN! The fried catfish was rubbery and over seasoned. The rice was pretty room temp, mushy and bland. The hush puppies were also room temp and pretty dry. The beans were COLD, but the flavor was alright, I guess. (At this point, I'm getting pretty annoyed with how much complaining I'm doing, but I'm going to power through it!) The stuffed crab had to have been sitting there all day because it was dried out, room temp and disgusting! Seriously awful. The fried butterfly shrimp was edible, but it tastes better coming from the frozen section at Walmart! Last, but most definitely not least, were the fried oysters. These suckers were delicious. I would say it's comparable to fried bar food. I don't know if I just latched on to these because it was the only thing on my plate that was hot and crispy or because it was genuinely good, but I enjoyed them. I wish I would have gotten the oyster dinner, however, I didn't want to pay the $17 for what I assumed was going to be crap anyway. To recap: Total shit, overpriced, service was a little obnoxious, save yourself the disappointment.

No thanks!! I know this place was once an amazing place to eat... Now it's just terrible. The food is bland and the fish is chewy!! I can't recommend this place!!

Super weird atmosphere... I know it's Sedalia, but seriously WEIRD. It's like eating in a huge open room with this old Disney-esque ocean theme. As for the catfish, it was almost good, but it was too salty and a little rubbery. I don't know. Try it for yourself...some people (including my dad) love it. Oh, and the rice was good.

Normally this place has great food and service. Not today. I'm not sure of it is because the fair is in town or if they just don't care any more. We ordered Cajun fries and got some soggy flavorless fries instead. The fish was bland and mostly undercooked. Our server obviously didn't want a tip because she would not address one of our company directly. She didn't bring my food until everyone else was checking out and said "oh darn" when someone told her I hadn't gotten my food yet. I won't be going back until I hear from someone that the food and service have improved tenfold.

I heard about LeMaire's for years before I was coerced into trying it. The old restaurant was a dingy little dive- full of scratchy throated chain smokers. Now that they've moved to the bigger, nonsmoking location near Ryan's, it's much easier to breathe when you go in there. The menus are dated, the tartar sauce comes in a packet, and the food is cheap- but decent. You can get crab legs as a meal for less than $15, but if you're really hungry and your arteries are in good shape, and you want to splurge... order the Full Net. It comes with catfish, butterflied shrimp, fried clam strips, stuffed crab, breaded oysters, coleslaw, rice, baked beans, and hush puppies... for only $14.95. What a deal! The cajun rice- or "dirty rice" , is amazing. I usually get that in place of coleslaw, but I've heard the slaw is good too. LeMaire's is not fine dining. It's good, old fashioned catfish. And for this area, that's all you pretty much need.

Yep, it's true. LeMaire's really is the best Cajun food in central MO. And now that they are in a larger, cleaner, smoke-free, less hole-in-the-wall-ish location (on hwy 50 right across from the Truman Inn,) it's a much more pleasant place to eat. They're almost always crowded but service is quick & friendly. Known (and rightly so) for their catfish, but try the crawfish for a change of pace!

If you choose to wade through the previous review, please note that Le Maire's has moved to a new location on Highway 50 in Sedalia. This is a no smoking facility. The fish is good with a fresh texture and no dark "belly" meat. The sides are good as well. I suggest the beans and the coleslaw. The crawfish are also excellent (and messy). I have also tried the oysters and they are quite well prepared.

Being from the west coast, I am a fan of sea food. I always hear about Catfish done out in the mid west and the south. So I was curious and ready to try it out. It wasn't to bad. The sides are very good here. The coleslaw and the beans were terrific. The Cat fish itself was not great but it was prepared different. The bread they used was like this light, spongy texture. The place was nice and well decorated. The service was also very good. Lots of room for large gatherings. This place would be a hit and miss with most folks.
