Pappy's Smokehouse is, without a doubt, the reason why there is now such a thing as STL BBQ. This is not meant to be a knock on any of the other local shops that have been cranking out ribs for so long, but it is verymuchso the reason why so many new local businesses have been impressed to smoking meats as of recently, and with good reason: Pappy's does a freaking awesome job at it. At the center of it all is Mike Emerson; with a personality that should have his own Discovery Channel show, and the heart of a true artisan, he and his crew crank out surreal amounts of smoked meats with an unparalleled amount of consistency and perfection since his first days the shop was opened outside of SLU campus, and I can say this quite literally as the wife and I were one of the first people there to sample his goods. You walk in and you're slammed from get go. Unless you make plans to beat the rush at like 10:30 in the morning, and even then you'll have to deal with the other twenty or so foodies that had the same idea, you will be confronted with a rather impressive queue of people with the shared singular purpose of eating as much smoked pork as they can hide from their next cholesterol test. It's almost a galactic constant at this point, even moreso since they expanded the facility: seemingly everyone wants to eat at Pappy's Rest assured, the wait is well worth it, and to be honest, the wait is almost as good as the food. Whomever you're in line with, they're typically friendly, with stories of Memphis, Harley Davidsons, the Blues (both the music and the hockey team), and, of course, how their lives have been incomplete until this very moment they have been waiting in line anxiously awaiting this heaven sent rack of perfectly cooked ribs. Granted, being surrounded by the amazing pork sauna that is Pappy's ribs, sausages, brisket, and sides can be a bit maddening, but if you're really lucky, Mike will send out a member of his crew with a plate of samples to keep you entertained, and even sometimes he does it himself. To be quite honest, the wait never seems long, but the excitement does keep you anxious for the first bite, and rest assured, once you hit it, you realize the wait was worth it. No matter what you get there it will be great, from their spot on ribs to their pulled pork, even their Frito Pie is amazing, as is their sauces, their sausages, and even their sides of greens and other vegetables. When all is said and done, it sinks in as to how real of a deal this place is: Pappy's isn't a chain, it's not a fad, it's not hipster, hell they don't even serve beer or craft cocktails there. It's everything you'd expect when Mike shakes your hand and greets you for the very first time. It's as local as it gets, and where every restaurant wants to be at this very moment.

This place is up there with the Texas bbq I've tried. The ribs are fall off the bone. The brisket is smokey and the rub on it is delicious. I loved all the sides too. The beans have a slight onion flavor to them which I thought was good. The potato salad had Mac in it which was also good. I tried all the sauces my fav was the original. I wish that the spicy sauces had been hotter. They were extremely mild. A group of 3-4 could easily share a rack of ribs + 2 sides for only $24.

As you can see from the sixteen-hundred positive reviews that have already been written, Pappy's is amazing and probably does not need another review written about how incredible this place is but dog-gone-it, this is Yelp and I am a proud Yelper so here is my review. Wow!! Amazing!! Awesome!! Can't wait to go back!!! ................ I could leave it at that but I won't. The food at Pappy's is EVERYTHING that you would want from world class BBQ and the food is why we seek out these amazing places but Pappy's is 100% Americana, this is your typical world class local neighborhood BBQ joint that you can only find in America!!! A small family owned joint that makes everybody feel at home, yes there is a long (really long) line but that just gives you a chance to visit with the wonderfully amazing customers and staff while you soak in the aroma's of the food you are about to enjoy. While in line please take the time to look at ALL of the memorabilia on the walls and ceiling, Pappy's celebrates the men and women in our armed forces and there is a lot of local history on the walls, and maybe the largest collection of BBQ sauces on the shelves that I have ever seen. So, the food, it is in a word ................. PERFECT!!!! The ribs were cooked to perfection and had so much flavor, the grilled corn on the cob is amazing, the smoked turkey was the best I have ever had, the baked beans were a great side and the brisket was very good. On my next trip to Pappy's I plan on loading up on the ribs and turkey, and the burnt ends, and the grilled corn, and the baked beans ............... who am I kidding, call an ambulance because I am going to need to be rolled out on a stretcher after I try to eat one or two of everything on the menu. I would say that of everything that I tried at Pappy's, and between my wife and I we tried almost everything on the menu, the only item that I would say you can find better somewhere else was the brisket. I am not saying that the brisket was not delicious because it was, but R&R BBQ in Salt Lake City still has the best brisket in the world, other than that one item, Pappy's is second to none. I would be in serious trouble if I lived in St. Louis because a straight diet of Pappy's BBQ probably would not be good for my waistline but that would be a small price to pay for the joy of eating the food served at Pappy's!!! Best BBQ experience in St Louis! Yes... it is an experience! The husband and I had been told by a friend to check this place out. We headed over and got there a little after opening for lunch. "Wow, this place is busy! That is a good sign!" Little did we know that it was merely a trickle compared to the hordes about to descend! The line was clearly marked by signs hanging from the ceiling that also let you know when crunch time (ordering) was about to happen. The menu was clearly marked. Now, deciding what you want from the plethora of options was a bit difficult, but we managed. The line moved quickly and they were very organized. They even had an employee dedicated to finding people a table. (Don't try and find one when you get there! It could disrupt the perfectly orchastrated dance!) As we sat down at the table picked for us, we prepared to devour our feast. Who ever dreamed up fried corn on the cob was a genius! Everything was delicious! We saw a man handing out little piggies to the kids in line. We didn't have our two year old with us, and we were quite sad. (We don't get the chance to get away very often.) We happened to ask a server if it was possible for us to get a Pappy's Piggy to take home. Within minutes, we were presented with our prize! Sadly, the stomach can only hold so much and it was time to go. By this time the line was HUGE, but still moving quickly. I would highly recommend this place to everyone! And our son loves his sunglass adorned piggy!

It looked really promising, ordered the ribs per all the reviews. The blandest, most tasteless ribs i've ever had. I've had BBQ in Texas and Kansas City, even Chicago has better ribs. Won't be back, a very large let down. Too bad. Does anyone know if there are good ribs in St. Louis? I will be back in town, but want something better than this place. Sorry.

I went on an early Saturday afternoon and spent about 45 minutes in line. No big deal as far as I'm concerned, but if you have family members who can't tolerate standing for that long, you may want to try another place. My son and I ordered the ribs and brisket with potato salad and baked beans. Overall it was excellent. The brisket was a little dry when we went, but the ribs more than made up for it. Fall off the bone delicious. They have a variety of sauces to choose from from mild to spicy. I've enjoyed lots of barbecue in Texas, Mississippi, North Carolina, California (yes it's true) and Tennessee and Pappy's is among the best. I'm still partial to central Texas style barbecue, but there is no denying that Pappy's has mastered Memphis style, and should be on everyone's list of top St Louis eateries.

Freaking amazing barbeque! I loved every single bit about it. The only issue is you have to wait in a line because the barbecue is that freaking good. The food is ordered at a counter and then you go out and pick your seat and they bring you your food. I was lucky enough to try almost all of the meat. The chicken was fantastic the turkey was very good the pulled pork and beef was fan-freakin-tastic! I tried the mac and cheese which was great and my fiance had the fries which was well seasoned. So go stand in line and get some of the best barbecue in St Louis has to offer!! If you want you can even pack me a to go box and mail it to me here in Arizona because I sure do miss Missouri BBQ!!

What a great place!!! Only reason there's not a 5 up there is because of the wait. Wish I could give a 4.5 though. I've been to St. Louis for the 4th time now and this is the first time I'm trying Pappy's. Well, my friends the rumors are true! This place is worth all the hype and the hour and 15 mins wait if not more! The good news...once you get through the line and order, your food is served within minutes and is simply finger licking good...literally. I ordered the half slab of ribs with baked beans and fried corn. The ribs were tender and flavorful, the beans were tangy and delicious and the corn crispy and perfect. I could not have had a better last meal in St. Louis! Perfect ending to a great trip. The coolest part was that Pappy himself came out and greeted the crowd. He was super sweet and personalized the visit. It's like he knew I was a foody! The rest of the staff was also helpful and quick. I will definitely be returning and highly recommend this as a stop in the STL.

First time here a few days ago. I moved from stl 10 years ago so I've been wanting to try this place, finally made it here this week. The ribs were tasty and I ate all of them but I think the sauces were on the spicy side-all of them. The sides were ok, nothing special. My husband got the burnt ends and really liked them but didn't care for his sides to much. He said the applesauce was out of a jar and the potato salad was just ok. My aunt had the ribs which she liked but wasn't impressed with her sweet potato fries. She said they were really thin and all stuck together in a ball and greasy. There's other places that are just as good. I don't really see what the hype is all about. Again the meat was very tasty and good just saying it's not like phenomenal. Also if you have little ones, they don't have high chairs or a kids menu. We brought our hook on high chair for my 17 month old.

For my quick trip to St. Louis, my local friends all recommended to check out Pappy's so this was my last stop for dinner before driving back home to Chi-town. We came in around 6 PM on a Tuesday and it wasn't crowded at all but more parties came in while we were eating. We ordered our food at the counter. My two friends and I decided to split a full rack of ribs and three sides. We got the potato salad, sweet potato fries, and green beans. After we paid, got water, and sat down, our food came out immediately. So the service is super fast! Between three people, a full rack of ribs gave us about four ribs each, which is more than enough, in my opinion. My favorite sides ranked best to "worst": green beans, potato salad, sweet potato fries. The order of fries was a letdown because it was way too sweet and looked like it was sugar sprinkled onto it to make it sweeter than it needed to be. My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed the green beans and wished they gave us more than a cups worth of it. I like that the ribs were so juicy and soft that it easily falls off the bones and just melts in your mouth. Also, Pappy's offered four sauces at the table where you can dip in whichever flavor of your liking. I like this concept more than other places I have been where they smother their ribs and the sauce can be way too overwhelming for my taste buds. Overall, this is definitely a place to visit if you are in the area!! Easy parking with a spacious lot in the back and street parking around the area.

Pappy's is definitely hyped up and can get really crowded. Their menu is truly something that you can crave time and time again, but my advice to you is if you'd like to try their entire menu is to come early otherwise all of the items that you want are sold out. I came in at approx 7:00pm on a Wednesday and they were sold out of the following: burnt ends, chicken, beef brisket and ribs. We were essentially only able to order pulled pork, turkey or sausage, so I said ok and went with the pulled pork. My pulled pork was paired with baked beans, fried corn and washed down with an iced tea. Overall, the pork was just ok, the bun was pretty cold and I smoked it with BBQ sauce in order to take in the full taste. The BBQ baked beans were awesome and the fried corn was very good. Overall, I was a bit disappointed with the visit, especially considering the hype but I will try it again earlier in the day in order to try out the ribs and brisket. So, the three stars for this restaurant is due to the time spent waiting in line along with the cost and seating. We ordered half slab ribs each and a small drink. Fifty dollars later and we are being told where to sit. Now our seats weren't bad but I heard people saying they wanted to sit somewhere and actually told no. I understood their requests because half of the restaurant had the line of people going through that. If I am spending more than thirty minutes in line and fifty dollars for my food, I want to sit whete I desire and not have a line of people standing around me. Even the customers that wanted to use the restroom had to walk down the hallway where there was a line of people of each side. The ribs were good, that's why I have it 3 stars, but that's really the only reason.

Decided to give this place a try on a trip west, so came in off I64. It was very easy to find and the area was a financial district so not scary to leave our packed car on the street during daylight hours. We got there early evening on a Monday so the line moved very quickly (They have moving the line down to a science). There is parking in the rear of the building by the entrance, but paying for it on the street was easier. If I went at night I would park in their lot. That said, I shared a rack of ribs, baked beans and sweet potato fries with my honey, and with two drinks it was $30. The meal was delicious. Loved the sweet sauce. The baked beans were sweet, but I'm southern so great for me. We had plenty to share and left full. Time spent there was about an hour and ten minutes. Worth the time off the road. If you love going local, you will love Pappy's.

Yehey!!! I made it here! I was looking for some BBQ around the area and people at DuPont suggested this place so we all went here for dinner. We left the office early and good thing we did because as soon as 5:30 hit, the place was packed and the line was all the way around the bathroom and out the door. I had the half slab, burnt ends for an additional $4 plus 2 sides of fried corn and sweet potatoe fries. Everything was super tasty! Out of this world goodness. The ribs were definitely falling off the bones. They offer different sauces to go with it that were definitely good. I like the spicy and sweet. The burnt ends were super yummy as well. A definite must to get. The sweet potatoe fries were a lot and 3 people can share one order. The fried corn, super yummy as well. Everything was delish! No alcohol/beer served but that's good anyway. The service is pretty fast as well. 1 or 2 minutes and your food served. They can run out of food so be there as soon as you can.. I will definitely come back and call for an order to go next time if I cannot get out of the office early. There is also parking on the back, but the lot gets full quickly. You can also park on Olive st.

Amazing! The truth is there is no other way to describe how amazing this place is. For anyone not familiar with Pappy's or how amazing their ribs are, you NEED (read: MUST) order the ribs when you come here. This is what they are best known for. The brisket is average and I haven't had anything else other than ribs and brisket. No reason to even get anything else other than ribs. I have been to Dreamland BBQ in Alabama and several other great places including Hill Country BBQ in NYC and the ribs at Pappy's are the best I have had anywhere. It is not even close. If we arrive and they are out of ribs or running low on ribs we don't even bother, we go somewhere else because THAT IS HOW GOOD THE RIBS ARE. Don't order chicken. Get the RIBS! They also have the best sweet potato fries I have ever had. The corn on the cob is also great. Can't wait to go back this Friday for my birthday!

Lord have mercy on my soul I died and went to BBQ heaven. Hands down the best ribs I have ever had. Ever. Like this shouldn't even be legal. But it is and it's awesome. Brisket was delicious too. The only thing i didn't care for here was the fried corn, but that might just be personal preference. They have a ton of BBQ sauces to choose from and I could t really pick a favorite. I rotated between the original, the sweet, and the spicy one. All delicious, just depends what flavor you're going for. I know yelp always talks about the line, but we showed up around 5:30pm for dinner and there was no line! Yea like I said, BBQ heaven. If you're in the city, please do yourself a favor and stop here. And when you take a bite of those ribs have tissues ready cause you might cry at how beautiful they are. Nom nom.

DELICIOUS We got here right at 11 when they opened so our line was minimal. I had the half ribs combo with burnt ends added on. I chose potato salad and baked beans as sides. I loved the baked beans. The meat was unique in that it had some spice added it seemed. It was flavorful without being overpowered. The ribs were so tender. Pappy's was well worth the wait. Luckily I didn't have to wait outside in the oppressive St. Louis summer heat for too long, and soon enough I went from waiting outside to waiting inside which was a very much welcomed. After about 30-40 minutes of waiting in line, I got to the finish line, and that finish line was St. Louis style ribs! The dry-rubbed ribs were honestly the best I've ever had and didn't require a drop of BBQ sauce, a true sign of good ribs. If I ever make the trek to St. Louis again, Pappy's will be on my must-visit list!

Only the best barbecue I've ever had. No big deal. If you manage to get there before they run out, try the burnt ends, but only if you can come twice. If you can only come once - RIBS! Sweet lord just get the ribs. And also the slaw, beans, potato salad, corn, and who am I kidding, just go here twice. The atmosphere is really fun but make sure to get there before 6 when the line starts wrapping around the place. They do a great job of managing traffic and sending small parties to small tables. The food comes quick and it's a very short trip overall.

Made it a point to wrk in St. Louis on our road trip to California. We looked on Yelp for the best ribs in town and this is where we were lead. The line was a little big, but being Saturday at noon, that should be expected. However, they were very organized and fast about serving everyone so clearly they are used to be being busy. They had menus being passed around so you were ready to order once you got to the counter. When you are close to the counter, they ask how many people are in your party and they find you a table for when you are done ordering. We ordered our food and we had a seat immediately. We ordered 3 things, which was entirely too much. I had the half slab of ribs with sweet potato fries and the fried corn on the cob. My girlfriend had the burnt ends sandwich with apple sauce and fried corn. Then we couldn't resist the sound of the BBQ tater. It was a baked potato with your choice of meat, baked beans, cheese and onion. The food arrived in around 5 minutes which was awesome. It was all hot and fresh and smelled of smokey perfection. The ribs were perfect. They were the best I have ever had by far. I didn't need to add any sauce because they were just perfect the way they were. The sweet potato fries were a little on the stale side, but judging how busy it was, they were acceptable and still delicious. The fried corn was something very interesting that I ended up liking very much. My girlfriend really liked her sandwich. She especially loved how fresh the bun was and how much meat was on the sandwich. The BBQ Tater was insane. It was a massive potato with beef brisket and beans and cheese. This is enough for 1 persons entire meal. We both weren't huge fans of the brisket, but it was still good. We recommend this for any BBQ lover as it was most likely the best ribs I ever had!

I like pappy's. I think the barbecue is comparable to Adam's and Bogart's, but I prefer their baked beans and other sides to Pappy's. I think Pappy's is best if you can catch it on an "off" time... probably before 11:30am or between 2-4pm. Otherwise, the line gets exceedingly long and will snake through and around the whole building. The food is good, and worth trying at least once, but if you get there and find yourself facing a huge line, I would say your best bet is to hit one of the other great barbecue joints around the city.

Don't let the line scare you, from the door to the hallway to the ordering line to sitting down with my food was 45 minutes. Totally. Worth it. I didn't care for the fried corn (old, tasteless, mushy) or the potato salad (carrots and cheese do not belong) but I didn't care because they only threatened to take up valuable pulled pork room. The pulled pork was simply outstanding: flavorful and juicy while still retaining a perfect smokey texture. The legend is accurate. Can't wait to go back and try the burnt ends, which had sold out by the time I arrived at noon.

So I actually haven't been to this location in St. Louis, hope to one day, but I had their Ribs at the 13th Annual Big Apple BBQ Block Party in NYC last weekend. See my pics. There were 14 BBQ booths represented from all over the country (TX, KC, STL, TN, AL, MS, NY) and we tried almost all of them. And can say with certainty that Pappy's from St. Louis was by far the best and they had some of the best Baby Back Ribs I've ever had in my life...and I'm originally from Texas, and eaten all through the South (TN, AL, SC) as I have family there and also been to KC & STL. So for me to say that, it's a pretty big deal. The flavor of the ribs were amazing, texture, cooked to perfection, fell off the bone, etc. After eating their ribs, I was actually mad that I had 'wasted' time & money at the other places. So, good, we went back on Sunday just to have the ribs again, and like them as much or better the 2nd time. And keep in mind, I had to cut the ribs with a plastic knife while standing up and eat standing up in the hot sun as there were not tables there, and even given those circumstances, I can still say the ribs were life changing. I can only imagine how good it is at the actual restaurant and how good their other things must be. As a die-hard Texan whose also eaten ribs in Nashville, Memphis, KC and SC, it pains me to say that these guys are the best in the country for baby back ribs. If you ever have the opportunity to go to St. Louis, bypass every restaurant there and go straight to Pappy's and have their ribs - it'll change your view on what ribs are supposed to taste like. But just might mess you up as well though, cause no other place will satisfy your palate for ribs quite like Pappy's can.

I'm sorry Pappy, my good friend Franklins does brisket the right way! Come on down to Texas and we'll show you how to do it! Pappy's is an interesting restaurant. I'm used to getting my barbecue after waiting in a line. That's how most places do it in the union's greatest state. I think they could improve the seating by handing out numbers that correspond to open tables. Instead, a hostess will come seat you once you place your order. Now one thing I miss about St. Louis would be the region's take on ribs. Always phenomenal! You did'em justice, Pappy. I could do without the fried corn on the cob. It sounded great in theory, but I had too many kernels stuck to my teeth. It was a much larger amount versus your traditional boiled or grilled corn. Baked beans.... ON POINT! All the meat was cooked well. I really took to the burnt ends. Like I said in the beginning, brisket is done so much better elsewhere. Stand in line and get some Pappy's. It's all good!

The line on this place is outrageous. Don't worry though I have a excellent hack around that. Call in your orer and you can skip the wait and pick up your meal in about 20 minutes. After arriving to see how crazy the line was, I did just that and walked right in to pick up my food with no hassle at all. I ended up going for the ribs. These ware some of the best that I have ever tasted. They were tender and smoky, with a nice little glaze from the sauce. After you sink your teeth into the food, it is easy to understand why the line is so impressively long. The quality of the food is that which begs the formation of a long line. I will say on the downside, I was rather unimpressed by the sides. I don't know if that is because the mains were so impressive that it sort of takes away from what you think of the side dishes. One can only shine so bright when standing next to the sun. I ended up getting the Apple sauce, baked beans and green beans as my sides. The green beans were the only in the group that I would order again. The apple sauce I ordered under the impression that it was homemade, and if it is, you don't have that impression after trying the dish itself. Still the quality of the ribs themselves is enough to get five stars from me.

We made a weekend trip out to STL from KC. We take a lot of pride in our BBQ here in KC... We showed up at 7:45pm and the wait was about half an hour. Since it was nearly the end of the night, they had already sold out of the burnt ends, brisket and turkey...womp womp. I live in the northeast, and it's sometimes hard to get good bbq, so I was excited to try Pappy's while in St Louis for work. Hands down, the best beef brisket I've had. The ribs were smoky, sweet, and excellent. My colleagues also raved about the chicken and liked the pulled pork. One colleague ordered hers without bread, to avoid the gluten, but they forgot and included it. They were good about letting her know which sauces were safe, though. Great, friendly staff. Summary: Come here! There'll be a wait, you'll be boiling while you wait, but the meats are worth it. Pappy's reputation makes it a must-go for St. Louis visitors. I'm delighted to say YES, visit Pappy's when you are in St Louis. There's a line, but it's well managed from outside to inside. While outside, water is provided to keep you cool while you boil in the St Louis heat, and inside, you're given a menu to start pondering which amazing meats you'd want to feast on. From start to finish, the staff is friendly and helpful. My friends and I ordered the Adam Bomb, which is a sampler of all their meats, 4 sides, and a Frito pie. I'm delighted to report that where it counted - the barbecued meat - Pappy's lives up to the reputation. There are several things great about it. First, the flavor. Pappy's does not fall into the trap of flavoring everything the same way. Not only are the meats distinctly tasty, they have enough flavor to be delicious without sauces, but takes on new life with sauces. Second, the meat is cooked to perfection. The chicken had a nice smoke but was still tender and juicy. The ribs fell of the bone. The brisket had a great bite to it. Even the sausage in the Frito pie was excellent. I think the ribs stood out the most, but surprisingly, I may even recommend the chicken just because it is rare that I find barbecue chicken that I enjoy. Third, the sauces are great complements to the meal. There's a great variety - sweet, smokey, spicy, or regular. Whatever your preference is, you'll find the sauce you want. The sides were a mixed bag. The slaw was excellent, not drenched in mayonnaise but rather has more of a vinegar taste. The corn was buttered and delicious. The sweet potato fries were a bit of a letdown, being soggy and sad-looking. The worst part was the Frito pie. There is probably a reason for the creation, but it was a big letdown. The sausage was great, like the other meats, but it otherwise, there was little that was interesting in texture or flavor, especially if you had ordered beans as a side already. I'd recommend getting whatever meat you had wanted on the pie without the pie for a better experience (unless you really like Frito chips and baked beans together). This is a restaurant that's well worth the wait as a representative St Louis barbecue joint. We waited about half an hour to get seated, but boy were we satisfied by the end of it!

Still not sure how I've lived in St. Louis for almost five years and have now JUST gotten over to Pappy's! We decided to check out Pappy's on a Friday. Silly me thought the line wouldn't be too bad at 1:30 PM....man was I wrong!!! The line was probably 20-30 minutes long....and not because they are slow. They move like a well oiled machine here. There were just THAT many people!!! I must live under a rock because I had no idea how popular the place is. It is lined with tons of famous people's signed menus, including tons of athletes (both in and out of St. Louis), Chris Rock, the Fab 5, and I'm sure there are others that I don't remember. My husband and I split the bbq chicken and my friend ordered the ribs. He's VERY picky and doesn't believe that anything is truly 5 stars. He gave the ribs a 4.3, which is saying something. I would give my chicken bbq a 4.5. I thought it was just so juicy and definitely melt-in-your-mouth goodness. Despite the long line, we were able to find a nice booth thanks to abundant seating at Pappy's. The service was friendly and our food came out wicked fast. I'd say the only downside is the noise (because of the sheer number of people) and the line. I did think it was really good, but not 30 minutes in line good. Plus, I'm not a huge BBQ fan. I'll definitely be trying to figure out when they are less busy. Early Friday afternoon is clearly not the answer. In sum, if you love BBQ, you definitely should check it out!

What else do you do in the Midwest other than chow down on some good ole BBQ? Pappy's was our first stop after landing at the airport. Staff was welcoming with some Southern hospitality. The ambiance was patriotic, family oriented and just straight up FUN! Take a minute to look around at the pictures, knick knacks, Pappy's paraphernalia, the pig and go find that smoker. We were ready to hoedown. "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in "California" anymore!" So, here's the GIST! Stand in line, think about your order. Long lines, but they move fast. Flat screens with sports games showing (Go Clippers, this is your year!!). Follow the rules and do NOT save tables. Order 1st, then the host will find a table for you. We went PIG WILD and decided to try everything we wanted. C'mon now, how often do we get to experience BBQ at a real smokehouse? Our FAVES were: -Burnt Ends ($13.95 w/ 2 sides): It is what it is, the burnt ends! Similar to the brisket in texture, BUT packed with flavor/seasoning/glaze. Adult favorite. -Dry-rubbed/slow smoked over apple/cherry wood house special St Louis Ribs ($23.99 for full slab & 2 sides). Nicely seasoned and somewhat fall off the bone. A tad dry. Kid's favorite -Fried Corn on a Cob: smoky kernels w/ a hint of salt. Yum! Kid's didn't like it. -Baked Beans: plumped beans in a sweet/savory BBQ sauce w/ garlic. Delicious. -Holly's Hot sauce (Texas Style hot) won our hearts: a little tang, kick and sweetness. Gotta admit we expected more from their spicy sausage. They were light in color and lacked the glaze we've grown accustomed to. Plus, it wasn't very smoky or as spicy as we hoped. Brisket was juicy, but definitely needed to be paired with the BBQ sauces. I love it when I'm travelling and actually feel like I'm in a different place. Pappy's was the highlight of our trip! Yummy food and enjoyable vibe. I got here pretty early on the day I went and my mouth was already watering...we could smell the smoke before we saw the signs. The doors had opened less than 20 minutes prior to my arrival and the line already reached the door. Luckily, it moved quickly. They sure do know how to get people through the line efficiently! I ordered a pulled pork sandwhich and tried a different sauce on each bite. After I got through all the sauces I played around with a few combinations before finally smothering the last couple of bites with their original sauce, which was by far the best. By the time we left, they had wrapped the line down the hallway and it was already spilling out the door....but I see why. Don't double-guess it, just go....early.

Oh my god. I'm not even sure there's a point in writing reviews for this place anymore (1710 as of now), because everything that could've been said has been said. I came in from out of town on a roadtrip, but made sure to stop here for lunch. The 45 minute wait for my food was totally worth it. I ordered a whole rack of ribs with deep fried corn and sweet potato fries. Everything exceeded my expectations. Ribs were perfectly cooked, meat falling off the bone and dissolving in the mouth. The dry run seasoning was spectacular, but the house BBQ sauces (4 of them, I believe), were each out-of-sight in their own unique ways. After finishing the rack of ribs, I didn't have much room for the sides, and ate about half of the corn and fries - but both were excellent. Don't pass this place up.

I can only speak for myself but this place has the best barbecued ribs this side of North America. So glad I didn't let the long lines deter me from eating at Pappy's. We even got to meet the owner himself who gave my niece and nephew little toy piggies to play with while in line. I got the dry-rubbed 1/2 ribs platter w/ a quarter serving of burnt ends and sides of sweet potato fries and beans. I wanted to finish the entire thing in one sitting but wanted to prolong the experience so I took the rest to go and ate it after the day of sightseeing was over. The ribs were tender, cooked perfectly, and the beans + SP fries were a sweet (literally) complement. If you're ever in the St. Louis area or touring the Illinois towns bordering it, better get your butt down to Pappy's. Pro tip: They actually start serving people at 10:30 am on the weekends so if you get there by then, the lines won't be that long. We got there at 11:30 and the wait was already an hour.

Amazing food! Fall off the bone ribs. Embodies St. Louis style ribs for sure! The applesauce, beans, and sweet potato fries are awesome side! I recommend grabbing some Fitz's soda (root beer, cream soda, and orange) too! Great atmosphere, service is great, food is great, everything is great! Pappy's Smokehouse greets you with a line that leads to another line. About 30-40 minutes later, and you'll get your food. With that long of a line, I guess I had too high of expectations, especially as items were coming off the menu because they were sold out. I had ribs (A+), pulled chicken (eh), coleslaw (not good), and fried corn on the cob (meh). The ribs made it into a good meal. The rub and slowcook will make me consider coming back at an earlier time for the brisket, and hopefully a smaller line. My friend had turkey which was actually incredible. They have some local sodas that were also very good. I forgot the name, but I'll be on the lookout.

Hands down, these are some of the best ribs in the BBQ scene around. The fried corn on the cob is an awesome side too and is unique and has good flavor. We've been to Pappy's quite a few times but decided to order ribs to go this past weekend and show some Chicago friends what BBQ is all about. Was very quick to get it picked up and allowed us to skip the huge line! Our friends agreed these were the best ribs all around - just remember, while the BBQ sauce is good here please please keep it away from the ribs. The rub combined with the super tender pork is all you need!!!

It is worth mentioning that as one of the managers told me ~ the truth ~ this is not St. Louis style bbq. This is Memphis style with some twists. They do and I quote "whatever we want". Tom told me that this has only been open 7 years and they decorated the interior to make it appear as if it has been here forever. I like honesty with my food. Now that being said it's good to get here early. Arrived via cab at about 11 and there were only 30 people in line in front of me. In the 90 minutes I spent here there were never less than 100 people in line. Is it worth it? Yeah. Sure. The ribs are killer and while Texas has Memphis beat with beef - Pappy's does pork ribs right, right here in STL. I have to admit these are the best pork ribs I have ever tasted on the face of the planet, Texas included. Nice! Evil delicious. The sausage links are interesting in their red casing and the burnt ends are different than what I was expecting. See, in Texas they take a piece of bbq and cut the burned ends off whole. Here they appear to shred the pieces and marinate them in garlic and balsamic vinegar for just two of the flavors I detected. The fried corn cobs are interesting. Personally I don't care for corn and this didn't change my opinion. The green beans were bland and could have used a dose of bacon or something. Drink selection sucks with nothing but HFCS laced beverages (and tea) and while I am happy to have eaten here, I still want to know what authentic St. Louis BBQ is like. Enjoy my photos.

OMG! Look no further and RUN to this place! I wish we had this in California. The best ribs I have ever eaten. The line was long but it moved really fast. Got food with ten minutes of ordering. The beans were again, the best and the sweet potato fries had a sprinkling of baked on brown sugar I think. Not too sweet but so good. I could easily easy here regularly.

Visiting from SF, I had to hit some good BBQ. Asked some friends from STL about where to hit, a few said Pappy's and the yelp reviews sure backed it up. Was really pleased with the experience. I hit it around 2:30 on a Wednesday and it was PERFECT. No line. I had a half rack of ribs with sweet potato fries and vinegar slaws. I can see where some reviews said that the fries were sweet, but I had ran in Forest Park and walked over 5 miles so sugar and carbs were great. The ribs were falling off the bone tender and the slaw was great. I ended up ordering takeout to bring to my hotel for dinner. The pulled pork and burnt ends were good, as were the beans and corn. Still think the ribs and slaw were my favorites.

My friends and I arrived at Pappy's on a Friday around lunchtime. Here is a list of the events that followed... Arrived around 12:30, there was ample parking in the back of the restaurant. We got in line, which started outside, and eventually made it inside. We waited approximately 40 minutes to get to the counter to order. You want to arrive as early as possible because they only smoke so much meat on a given day. When you order, the servers will find a seat for you, and less than five minutes later our food arrived. I had the brisket, fries, and fried corn on the cob. I had a larger portion, with a drink was approximately 20.00. Everything was absolutely amazing! Best BBQ I have ever had. I couldn't eat the rest of the day from the amount of food I had. My friends each had ribs and were equally happy with their plates. I can't recommend enough. Be prepared for a nice wait, but it is well worth it. You will not be disappointed.

Traveling to Saint Louis - try the BBQ everyone says and everyone has different suggestions. No two the same, how do you choose! Well, I chose Paddy's and I'm glad I did. Long line at lunch, goes quickly enough. Ordered the ribs & burnt ends with slaw & corn on the cob. Faves were the burnt ends by far, corn - it's deep fried! And the vinegar slaw was yummy too! 4 sauces on the tables to choose from, all flavorful! Definitely would return if I found my way back... They're doing it right for sure.

After a day of drinking at a local brewery, we wanted to try some local St. Louis-style BBQ. After a recommendation from a local, we took a taxi here. Unfortunately, the line for a table was out the back door and into the parking lot, almost to the sidewalk. We waited about an hour from the time we got in line to the time we began eating. While in line, I saw that the place was quite famous as it was littered with autographs from all kinds of celebrities giving their praise. I ordered half-a-rack with a side of beans and potato salad. And I must say, this was some of the best BBQ ribs I've ever had. It was very tender and fell right off of the bone, and with some sweet 'n spicy BBQ sauce, it tasted fantastic. I recommend trying the ribs with a local Fitz's root beer, or creme soda! If I'm ever in St. Louis again, I will make the trek here.

What can I say that has not already been said? Place is a must visit when you are in St. Louis. The wait in line was about 20 minutes but this gave us time to decide. Once the order was placed, a worker showed us to a table and the food came out quickly after. We split a full rack of the fall off the bone ribs. Truly the best ribs I have ever had. The dry run is sweet and spicy and a sauce is really not needed. However I tried all four sauces just because and have no complaints about any. Love the spicy sauce! We added a side of smoked turkey to our order which did not disappoint. So tender and flavorful! And not at all dry. As far as sides the baked beans are sweet and well seasoned. The green beans are crisp and well seasoned. Also tried the potato salad which was nothin to write home about but just alright. If I go again, would order the sweet potato fries that the guy next to me had and looked great! Definitely worth the wait!!

Burnt Ends, where have you been all my life? And do you think it might be time for a rebranding exercise? Calling yourself Burnt Ends is wholly unrepresentative of your succulent, meaty goodness! (I have no idea if burnt ends are this good everywhere, but they are incredible here and thus you should order them without hesitation!) The pulled pork also deserves accolades. And you can't go wrong with any of Pappy's BBQ sauces, from the classic to the sweet to the peppery hot hoodoo. My friend bought two bottles to take home to New York City! I came here with in a party of four and ordered The "Adam" Bomb at the suggestion of a hostess. For about $50 we got a taste of almost everything at Pappy's: a full slab of ribs, a beef brisket sandwich, a pulled pork sandwich, 1/4 Chicken (which we substituted out for burnt ends but ended up with both), a hot link Frito pie and four sides (the green beans and sweet potato fries were highlights). Needless to say, we needed the to go boxes we were given! These portions are insane! Now I know why everyone I ask about St. Louis BBQ calls Pappy's their favorite. Look no further, y'all!

I'm not a huge southern BBQ guy but Pappy's definitely has the flavor. If BBQ is your thing I'm sure you'll love this place way more than I did. The chicken I had was super tender and really smoky and generally delicious. I also had the frito pie which was solid but definitely not something I would ever sit around dreaming about. Check it out if you're in STL, the locals love it and they are very serious about their BBQ.

Damn that's good! "Get the burnt ends" said a regular Pappy's patron. And we did. Twice! We had half a rack of ribs plus burnt ends, baked beans and sweet potato fries. YUM! They service it seasoned but there's also 4 sauces at the table to top with: sweet, vinegar, spicy and hot. Yum! We did order a second helping of the burnt ends because my other half was still hungry so if you're big eaters, get a platter per person. Get here early, hang with the regulars and treat yourself to an awesome BBQ experience. Staff is super friendly and the food is awesome. Winning!

The ribs were delicious! Most of my 3 (3 1/2) stars for go to that. We ordered the "Big Ben" so I will break if down like this. -Ribs were perfect! You can eat them without sauce. Yum. -1/4 of chicken felt like it could have used a few more minutes in the burner. -Pulled pork sandwich was nice and tender on a sweet bun. I really liked it. -hot links sandwich was o.k. Nothing great. I would not want it again. (they ran out of beef brisket) -sauce was nothing great. I've had better sauce at trendy smokehouses here in Chicago. Like many other have said, the beans had too much molasses. You would think you were eating "Bush's country baked bean". I could not tell the difference. The sweet potatoe fries underwhelmed. They could use some homemade sweet tea or some other type of signature drink like many smokehouses do. Service was good and quick. All the workers where very nice.

Just left and could not wait to write this review...if I could give a negative 5 I would!!! DO NOT see what all this hype is about...a lot of people have not had really great Bar-B-Que if you think this place is the $hit!!! First off, the male host today that seats you is rude, rude, RUDE and takes his important job way too serious ! They do get you ordered and sitting down fairly quick but at the expense of losing quality in the food. The brisket was doused with SoOo much pepper, TOUGH, and dry that you had to drench it with their unimpressive sauce (I've had better from my local grocery store LOL) when the overwhelming burn from the pepper brisket subsides you could try a cold, greasy sweet potato fry or their over sweet baked beans. The one thing we did enjoy was the corn...a must if you don't take my word and feel like you have to try this place but don't say I didn't warn ya

I can't even write this review without salivating. Best ribs I have ever had. It's so hard to say something that you won't read on every single review on here so, I'll give some advice instead. Get the ribs and burnt ends for sure. Also, before ever coming here I thought I would be able to go whenever I wanted and everything would be great. I was wrong. They run out of food (I know that's crazy right?! ) best thing to do is go when they first open and arrive early! Especially on the weekends because a line starts to form even before they open.

Great BBQ. I had a half rack, green beans, sweet potato fries and a small side of brisket. I went about 2pm on a weekday and still waited 30 minutes to eat but it was worth it. The staff was all very friendly and pleasant. The owner was wandering around the restaurant and line to greet people and make sure everything was good. I thought that was very cool. I would definitely return!

This was my 3rd trip here. The first two, I wasn't overly impressed.....I was drunk and it was late....so I won't hold that against them. This trip, however, was a different story. It was the middle of the afternoon, I was just passing through and decided to stop. Being a novice Competition BBQ'er myself, I always look for what a CBJ would be looking for. (Certified BBQ judge) They hit it out of the damn ballpark on this trip! That was some of the best brisket I have ever put in my mouth! The pulled pork was perfect and so were the ribs. I would like to see them get a little more creative with the beans though. Those seemed "dumped out of a can-esque". But who cares about those anyway!

Pappy's is a landmark. Simply the best bbq I have had. Their ribs are so good you would chew off your hand to get to them. The success are delicious. Everything is worth it. My son went here at age 5 and was treated royally. Others may have a good name, and may be great, but you will not beat Pappy's.

This is the most notorious BBQ place in Saint Louis. I'm not a huge BBQ person, but the food was pretty good. I went there with my husband and some of his family. They are big meat eaters and really seemed to enjoy everything. You order at a counter and they bring it out to you when the food is ready. They have giant picnic tables and it feels like your a kid, when you sit down. Pappy's has been mentioned on a Food Network show.

Well, how about noting that this restaurant is one of the top 100 places to eat on Yelp in the country? officialblog.yelp.com/20â€¦ *If this article doesn't make you believe in the populartity, than the line winding throughout the business, down the hallway and out the back door probably will. We opted for the burnt ends, pulled pork, fried corn and macaroni and cheese. The mac was mighty tasty - as was the pulled pork. I really enjoyed sampling all of the sauces at our table (not that the meat necessarily needed it). I always seem to be searching for a little extra kick of "something". Note that the line moves fairly quickly. Although, if given the choice, I would opt for visiting during less popular hours (between lunch and dinner). Carry out is available but it appeared these folks also had to wait in line :(

This is a heartbreaking story with a happy ending. I came here on a weeknight at 7:40 pm hoping to put this vaunted place to the test. But I did not know that Pappy's closes not at 8, as listed, but when they run out. And when I came, they had signs saying they sold out. Still, I managed to talk my way in and was literally the last person on line. I had heard about the burn ends but they were gone. So we're the chicken and turkey. But there were still ribs! As I approached the counter, I noticed a whiteboard counting down the rib slabs remaining. The math was not in my favor. After 15 minutes on line, 3 orders removed from the cashier, they'd run out of ribs. My heart broke, instead of clogging due to cholesterol. I hadn't hurt this bad in a while. Still, I remained enthused. I returned the next day at 1:45 p.m. Oooh boy, the line stretched out the door. I'd guess at least 45 minutes of waiting. But there is a pick up counter and it was empty. I stepped outside and put in my order. When can I pick it up? As soon as you can make it, I said. I waited inside for 15 minutes and got my food without issue. If I had waited, I think I still would have been on the portion of the line baking outside in the 95 degree heat. Now to the ribs. I caution, I'm no expert. My experience in this area -- real, authentic southern and Midwestern Smokehouse ribs -- is limited. I found the ribs to be delicious but not amazing. Perhaps it was because I got it to go. I'm willing to qualify my qualifier. They were soft and the meat were happy to divorce off the bone. The baked beans were good and the slaw surprisingly chipper and unburdened by heavy dressing. The BBQ sauce, however, was top notch. I tried them all. The hot and the sweet Jane were tops. I wish I had bought a bottle or two. I still think this place is deservedly 4 star quality. The food is good and the atmosphere inside is fun. Next time, I hope I can actually eat there.

We usually travel thru Memphis but decided to take a different route to try St. Louis BBQ. Not a big fan of the ribs sadly but everything else was really good. The brisket was moist but not fatty. The turkey was the best I've had I think and I usually don't like smoked turkey.Fried corn? Nope, weird, too dry. Sweet potato fries, yummy! Potato salad, too mustardy for me but my family loved it. Green beans, very good. Next time we'll try some place else to make a comparison but it's worth a stop!

After a long day at the St. Louis zoo someone recommended Pappy's to my family, being from Kansas City we couldn't pass up some good BBQ! I got the burnt end sandwich with fries, not sure why regular fries aren't on the menu but they do have them! My boyfriend got ribs.. my mouth is watering as I write this review... This place has good BBQ!! Not only is the food good but employees checked up on our table several times, getting extra plates out of our way and just to see how we were doing. We got there around 4 and it took about 15 minutes to get through the line to get our food, glad we beat the dinner crowd! We'll be back!

Absolutely the best BBQ that I've ever had! I was on a road trip and happened to be in Memphis, TN the day before. I had Central City BBQ while there and thought that it was really good. However, Pappy's blew them away! While there was a LONG line to wait in at Pappy's, it was totally worth it! Pappy would roam the line talking and engaging with the customers, and thanking them for visiting. We had the burnt ends along with a full slab of ribs and they were amazing! To me, good BBQ requires no sauce at all, and that's Pappy's to a tee! The sauces were flavorful and a nice little touch on the side, but completely unnecessary. The seasoning and meat's natural flavors can stand all on their own! If you're ever in St. Louis, you have to try this place, but get there early, or you'll be standing in line for a while!

I'm reviewing while it's fresh in my mind and my belly is still full! Pappy's is great. They've got the smokers outside and you can smell the sweet smoky goodness coming g out of the smokestacks. Our wait on a Friday at 1pm wasn't bad... About 20 minutes. They have a great system for dining in, just trust them. I make my own ribs and I have very high standards for bbq. Pappy's ribs are the best I've had before other than my own. The burnt ends were tasty as hell too. I was a little less impressed by the pulled pork and the brisket, hence the 4 star rating. Doing the brisket "pull test" was a failure. The meat was still too tough to pull apart... Pappy's only flaw. The man himself is great. He buses tables, says hi to strangers and made sure we loved our food. I didn't have the heart or guts to tell him his brisket was tough, but made him happy when I told him I approved of his ribs. He knows how hard it is to impress people that do real bbq. All in all a great experience.

We were passing thru on our way to the Great Lakes and made this one of our foodie stops. We're big on BBQ and have eaten BBQ at many famous places. Include many of which are featured shows of Adam v the man and I hate to say that this is some of the worst BBQ I have ever had. The brisket was undercooked and had to be torn away from the mouth. Some of the pieces were cut thick and I just couldn't eat them at all. I get the pulled pork everywhere I go. The pulled port here was cooked great but the flavor on it was terrible. As soon as I put it in my mouth I thought .:. What is that!!! The cole slaw was good, I liked it and it had a sweet and vinegar taste. Green beans were good also. The sauces were not that good. I hardly ever give bad reviews and this may have been an odd occurrence but I review almost all places I eat. The best BBQ so far has been Killins in Pasadena texas and Corkscrew in Conroe, Franklyns in Austin is good also.

Best pork ribs I've ever had. The ribs are perfectly cooked, tender and fall-off the bone. The short wait was worth it. We arrived 10 minutes after they opened, and stood in line for 35mins. They have over 4 huge smokers in the front and side of the restaurant. It's pretty strange that the entrance is in the back of the restaurant by the parking lot, but it's probably because they didn't expect lines that long when they first built the place. We ended up ordering a full rack of ribs (they only have pork ribs which is a shame because I think they'd do awesome beef ribs). We had a pound of burnt ends because I was unimpressed by the pictures of the brisket here. I'm from Texas - Franklins and Salt Lick do brisket well enough to put most places to shame, and I've been spoiled. That being said, the burnt ends were damn good, but the ribs. Holyyy. The ribs were a tad pink. From what? Spices. I don't know how they get that much flavor into the ribs, but when you can eat the ribs due to just seasoning and smokiness, without any BBQ sauce, you know those ribs are right. The pork ribs have a ton of black pepper on them, coarsely ground, and I definitely approve. If you don't like black pepper....sorry. They have some sweet BBQ sauces and vinegary ones, and I preferred the vinegar-based spiced ones. The honey BBQ sauces were a bit too sweet for my taste, but to each her own. 5 stars for those pork ribs. For sides, we got the slaw and beans. Again, the beans were too sweet for our taste, but I really like the mayo-less slaw. Happy Eating!

I was apprehensive about the wait but it was worth it! On a weekday lunch hour we were seated with our food in front of us within 40 minutes. The rack of ribs was fantastic! I love my bbq sauce but I didn't have any desire to use it on these. They were so tasty and had just the right amount of crust. The sweet potato fries were also yummy. The staff was great too!

Finally was in St. Louis at the right time to hit pappys with the full menu. 1st off i have to say I guess people like the cookie cutter this is what we are feeding you menu. I simply wanted half lb of each ribs, brisket, and burnt ends. Nope you can order a meal and add stuff but nothing just by the lbs unless o is from the catering menu. Next front counter person was nice until she became annoyed at my questions. Let gets to the food. Start with the good and go backwards I guess. Ribs. These ribs are legit. If I were to come here again or might be all I order. Plenty of sweat and savoy with a touch of smoke. Burnt Ends. Not how I am used to seeing them served but none the less they were pretty good. Nothing to brag about but will do the trick. I would order these before I ever order the brisket here again. Yet burnt ends are brisket. Brisket. Well if you know what brisket should taste like then don't order it here. Meaning if you have been to any reputable places in Texas. It was more like corned beef here. Outside of the smoke ring I couldn't tell it was smoked. It was also sliced super then. Way to fake a dried out brisket into looking moist. As well ordered the brisket half lean and half moist. I don't think they know the difference. As it all was the same cut. I really wished people who can't smoke a good brisket would stop cooking the meat. Just leave it off the menu and admit it's too tough to prefect, so we will just stick to ribs because their easy. That would help keep the price of brisket down for the places that can get it right. Sides. Nothing special, had baked beans and great beans. Sauces. Nothing really impressed, even though tier hottest sauce was close. Overall. I would say give it a try of you can beat the rush. Get the ribs easily the best thing on the menu. As well stay away from the brisket unless you like disappointment that taste like corned beef. Overall of you beat the rush this place is worth a try

Tehehe 1/2 slab ribs ($15.99) - comes with two sides of your choice..best ribs I have tried--tender and flavorful without the sauce...beats smoque in Chicago. Very filling..could be shared amongst 2 ppl unless you are a big eater Sides Sweet potato fries -delicious..topped with sugar or cinnamon sugar? Baked beans - always goes well with ribs..this was tasty as well. Customer service - good..no complaints..they bring out your food but the rest is self service. You can choose where you want to sit. Food wait time - food came out quickly...within 5 mins of ordering and it was hot/warm too! The wait is long but those ribs are worth it. We ordered a full slab, and added a 1/4 lb portion of pulled pork and beef brisket. Great for 2 people. The ribs are more smoked which I didn't realize I liked so much. I didn't need extra sauce either as it was tasty on its own! The brisket was less fall off the bone but way better than the pulled pork. Maybe it's just me I didn't seem to like the 4 bbq sauces too much. One was too sweet, one was too spicy. The original was too peppery. The potato salad was blah but we liked the green beans better.

Reviews weren't kidding. .... be prepared to wait. The line was whipped outside the doors on a Monday. We called our order in so I'll assume our wait wasn't as long as others that didn't. We had a full slab with 1/4 chicken, green beans, and baked beans. The best meal we have had since we've been here on vacation. We should have come here 1st. Anyway it was kinda dry with lots of bark but very good. Maybe because we picked up and drove 30 min back before eating. Small side portions, and plenty of sauce. Sauce was yummy enough for my husband to try and take it back on the plane home.

This place is legit. Came here for a late lunch/early dinner (LINNER!) around 2:30 and ordered a half slab of ribs with sweet potato fries and potato salad. The cashier recommended the green beans to me, but unfortunately i don't like beans or coleslaw. There was no line at this time with ample seating and parking. You place your order at the counter, and they bring it out to you at your table. At first bite, I thought they were good but nothing special. There was a huge amount of food and I honestly planned on eating maybe half of it. However, like any story that begins like that... somehow all of the ribs just ended up disappearing. I can't explain it. They were perfectly juicy and tender, and I actually appreciated that they don't come with any sauce on them since there are 4 different kinds of sauce at every table to choose from. Honestly, they are quite good even without sauce. I did like the Pappy's special, but my favorite was the Hoodoo, which is fairly spicy. I dipped my ribs in both Pappy's special and the Hoodoo and it was just perfect. I was going to stop, I swear, but then I didn't... The sweet potato fries were good but they were doused in sugar, which I was not a fan of. I think sweet potato fries are sweet enough on their own, maybe even better with a little salt. It tasted like candy and it was just not my jam. However, I really liked the potato salad. I think they put a little vinaigrette in it so it was a little tart and a great complement to the ribs. I couldn't finish most of the sides but would definitely get the potato salad again, or maybe try the baked potato. I can't speak to what this place is like at a busier time but I really enjoyed coming here. It's not super cheap at $17 for a half slab, but I think two girls could share a platter, although you might want more ribs! Definitely worth a trip if you are ever in St. Louis.

Pappys is well deserving of the good rap it gets. I came here on a Thursday at 2:30 and I barely had to wait--the line moves fast. All the staff are so efficient (and friendly! They help you out). I was excited when I saw the BBQ salad because I could have the famous meat and not get something enormous and unfinishable. I ate it at the bar with the sun shining in on me. Great experience!

I've never had ribs as tender and juicy as the ones I had at Pappy's. They were fall-off-the-bone tender. They were rip-them-apart-with-your-hands-and-minimal-effort tender. They were also the least messy ribs I've ever eaten because of how tender they were. The flavor was perfectly smokey and best enjoyed without any bbq sauce, though I did sample some. Point is that these ribs were amazing. The fried corn on the cob was good though there's something about fried corn that makes it get stuck between my teeth more than regular corn, which is bad enough as is. The baked beans were also good but bacon bits would've made them great. I'm told the line for lunch here wraps all the way outside the joint but moves pretty quickly. There wasn't much of a line during dinner and there was plenty of seating to choose from but I believe it when my friends say the line moves quickly because the minute we sat down at our table, our dishes landed. A perfect 10. Bravo.

Yes, the wait is ridiculously long. It was worth it, though. Things we loved: the burnt ends, ribs, slaw, fries. The sauces at the table were awesome! Alright when I first came to St Louis, I got to try Pappy's a couple times and I guess my old review just did not give this place justice. After having it again for the first time in 2 years, man I forgot how good Pappy's is. I don't know about you guys, but the basic comparison of other BBQ joints are always something like "it's not as good as pappys, or it's better than pappys" That second quote, honestly has a lot to live up to. Pappy's is just so freaking good, I just forgot how good it is. The ribs, fall off the bone, are AMAZING even without any sauce (just their dry rub). The beef brisket sandwich is so tender and tasty, man... this place is good. The sweet potato fries are so crisp and flavorful. The potato salad has a solid texture and great taste. Man this place is just so good. If you've never been here before, don't get cute, just try their ribs and sweet potato fries

Pappy's Smokehouse is a bbq staple in the heart of St. Louis. I swung by for a quick take away order while traveling through town to get the ribs which were tender and tasty. They had a certain sweetness in the sauce that I hadn't had in BBQ before but I thought it was executed pretty well. I was getting in at rush hour on a Monday and was surprised there was hardly any traffic and since it's not too far off the highway, I'd recommend this to the weary traveler driving through Saint Louis, it will energize you along the way. The sides were ok - deep fried corn on the cob and sweet potato fries, but nothing spectacular. The atmosphere is very casual: walk up order, open seating. The place is clean and the service is friendly and they have their own parking lot which is important in a big city downtown. I hear this place can get pretty busy, so it's nice there's a convenient and quick way to grab some take out.

I'll start this review with a tempered opinion of my own BBQ... It's the best. I've been working on my rib recipe for over 20 years and have approached it with a scientific mind a a deeply Southern soul. Having said that, please know that when I speak about BBQ I speak from my heart. Pappy's ribs are THE ONLY ribs I have ever had at a restaurant that left me wanting nothing. They were just damned good, period. The bark was perfectly formed and broke easily without being overly crunchy. The meat itself was tender and juicy, with just the right amount of smoky, savory goodness but yet retained a silky mouth-feel distinctive of low-and-slow rendered pork fat that is richly bathed in collagen. You cannot get this type of velvety richness without the proper amount of effort and attention. I've had ribs all over this great nation and there is simply no other place that even compares to these. It's not even the same effing game. The chicken was decent, the pulled pork was ok, the sides were all good enough, but none of these were worth writing home about, and they don't need to be (hence only the 4 stars). If this place decided to stop serving anything but the ribs they would still have a line out the door. In short, if you love ribs, go to Pappy's and grab a slab. If they don't make you want to throw rocks at every other rib joint you've ever been to, you have no soul.

Trying today for the first time. Was wanting Turkey but they were out. So got the chicken. Moist and good. Green beans had a lot of pepper so it was hot to me. Potato salad was different. Had so much brought some home. Rich had the brisket he loved it. Tender and lots of flavor. When we were leaving one of the waiters let him try the ribs. He is in love with them now. During my visit to St Louis, I was promised the best BBQ in the nation. I went to Pappy's on a weekday for an early dinner to avoid the long lines. Quick service, and really nice accommodating staff. I had brisket and burnt ends with apple sauce and fried corn on the cob. This was a great mix of sweet and savory, and was my first time trying fried corn, which as expected, was a bit greasy. The waitress even brought complimentary apple sauce for my friend so that he wouldn't have to get back in line to order. Great service and friendly genuine staff! This was a great midwestern BBQ experience, and I picked up a bottle of their Pappy's original smokehouse sauce to bring back to California! My order: Burnt ends - soft and tender cubes, very savory and delicious even without additional bbq sauce. Brisket - generous helping, thinly sliced, a bit dry and chewier than expected. Drowned it in their hickory house made sauce to combat the dryness. I've had better brisket from other restaurants, not sure what the hype is about this. Fred corn on the cob - I don't think this really counts as a vegetable anymore because of the overwhelming greasiness to the extent that the corn no longer had a sweet kernel taste and texture. It felt like I was biting into hollowed corn kernels basked in oil, and it still came with a side of butter. Apple sauce - A very good sweet (but not overly sweet) complement to the salty flavors of the other 3 items.

I can't believe I haven't reviewed Pappy's yet!! I love BBQ. Memphis, KC, Texas, Carolina... I haven't met a charred piece of meat that I didn't like. Pappy's might be my favorite place to get it. You are going to get to Olive and if you can't smell your way there, then you can find it by the giant line. Don't let that scare you away!! That line moves fast, mainly because this place is organized. You can't have a line holder and wait in a seat, and you might want to come early because they make for the day and once its gone its gone. The ribs are little slices of heaven; perfect seasoning and fall apart but still have a bite to them. Pork and brisket is awesome!! But my favorite is the turkey. By far its the turkey!!! ( But thats because I am a turkey nut, ribs are in a photo finish second). The sides are great not just your standard blah last thought sides ( love the baked and the green beans). You have to come here! It should be as necessary if not more than visiting the arch.

This place is amazing. I love it here. The food is always good and always a good amount for the price. In the past I've gotten the Frito pie, the turkey, the chicken, and most recently the ribs. All of this food has been really good and is the best way to define Missouri BBQ. I've had various sides before and like most of them too. The flavors, food, and proportions are so worth the wait. I will throw out a little caution, be sure to get there early. The line can get long and there are only so many seats available. It's still amazing though and worth it.

So everyone raves about this place and being the foodie that I am, I had to try it. Unfortunately, I was not impressed. CAVEAT, I don't eat pork, so half of their menu was eliminated for me. Not sure if that would have made a difference. I opted for the beef brisket and turkey breast. I think most BBQ joints rely on their sauce, but I appreciate when the meat is seasoned on it's own. Pappy's meat cannot stand alone. The bread was dry. The portions were small for the price paid. Plus none of the sauces wowed me. I appreciated the vibe and everyone was super nice. Perhaps I just had overly high expectations after all the hype about it.

Amazing BBQ! The wait was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. We showed up at 11:40am and waited about 35 mins. Totally worth it. I had the pulled pork sandwich with steak fries and the vinegar based slaw. I loved everything on my plate. Best pulled pork I've probably ever had. I didn't totally love their original BBQ sauce, but I did find the mixture of the spicy and sweet darn tasty.

Four and a half stars with a million reviews! I stopped at Pappy's on a cross-country road trip to check out the hype. I dropped in around 1:30 and only waited in line for 25 minutes. Not bad, really, considering that Pappy's typically resembles Target at midnight on Black Friday. I ordered the up-sized combo platter with pulled pork, burnt ends, deep fried corn on the cob, and sweet potato fries. WATER TO DRINK. (See how I balanced it out there?) For me, the real magic was in the sides. That deep fried corn. Oh my. Those golden fries of sweet potato goodness. Whoa. Just. Whoa. If the sides could be personified, they'd be Kate. The BBQ, easily, on par with William. Guys, we are talking ROYAL perfection here. This food is mind blowing. I must admit that I did, for roughly a two minute period, consider moving to St. Louis after finishing my meal at Pappy's. This was some of the best BBQ--maybe even the best food--I've ever had the pleasure of eating.

Pappys smokehouse was amazing! Even though we had to wait in line for about an hour and we wondered if we made the Right decision to come, once we set down our food was delivered to us within three minutes. I got the ribs with two sides and a local soda. Cliff got the ribs and pulled pork with two sides in a local soda. I am not usually connoisseur of ribs but I have to say traveling all over from Memphis to Louisville to Chicago to Nashville I've never had ribs so good. The meat fell off the bones and melted in my mouth. I would completely recommend Pappys for the food, hospitality, crowd and local flavor. If I could offer one piece of advice would be to show up early because the restaurant tends to sell out about an hour and a half before closing every day. And even before that most of the secondary meets will run out two hours to closing.

Second trip here and I'll quit looking for that wow factor. Look. Here's the deal. For St. Louis this is good bbq. All of it. I've tried it all including the frito pie which by the way is a rip off at $9, the frito pie contains mostly bushs baked beans with handful of Fritos, cheese and sliced sausage which leads me to this. The sausage here is actually a hot link, don't be fooled. The green beans are the standout here folks, some of the best anywhere. Yes, I'm sure your wondering how you screw up a green bean. Lol. These are FRESH AND seasoned. Excellent. The fried corn on the cob is done with any fancy batter but it just seems tough and rubbery after sitting a moment. The line is always long but moves quickly. Enjoy.

Pappys was my first stop in St Louis. Literally had to go there before going to the hotel due to their ominous 8pm (or until food runs out) open hours policy. Lo and behold, our 7pm or so arrival on a Thursday night meant they were out of about half their menu items, including pulled pork, burnt ends and pulled chicken. We made do with the remainder, opting for a couple of combo orders of ribs and brisket , along with hot sausage and turkey sandwiches. While everything was passable, the ribs were the real standouts - juicy, tender and delicious. Brisket was my least favorite, with its relatively dry texture requiring dollops of sauce (of which they had a good selection of four varieties on every table) to be enjoyably edible. Overall, a fun (and cheap) intro to St Louis, which might not have quite lived up to the hype and yelp ratings, had it not been for the saving grace ribs - definitely keen to give it another shot earlier in the day to see if I have a different experience with the other items.

Place gets busy but worth any wait. Ribs and pulled pork were great. Finally got to try burnt ends and this is a must as it is one of the first items they usually run out of. Brisket was a little tough for me then im use to back home in Texas but not bad. Baked beans and potatoe salad were very good. Only dislike is the small cup size and 1 drink machine area to walk thru crowds for refills. Food comes out hot and fast. Listen for your name as the yell it not long after you order. Inside is like a L shape with drink machins by order area and line. Entrance is located in the back and kind of tricky your first time finding it as another BBQ place is up front facing the street. Higly Recommended.

This place is a must during a St Louis visit. I recommend it to everyone coming into town. The ribs are incredible. All of the sides are great. Best barbecue I have ever had. Everything is dry seasoned with sauce on the side. Be prepared to wait though, as it is one of the most popular restaurants in St Louis. The owner is extremely personable and often comes out to welcome guests. It makes me more happy to have supported them.

Deeelicious! We stopped by around 12, and there was hardly a line, it did pick up while we were eating. Service was friendly and very fast, there was a girl that could seat you, otherwise it was a free for all with large picnic tables, so it'd be great for large groups. After a weekend of binge eating and drinking I decided to go for a 'lighter' option and got the salad with pulled pork and sweet potato fries. The salad was very large and was topped with meat, so I was still able to try all the sauces. Sweet potato fries were amazing as well, topped with sugar. My bf got the special of the day, pulled rib meat sandwich and it was delicious! Sides we tried were beans and potato salad--nothing special to write about on those. I saw a ton of people with the fried corn, and I'll def wanna try that next time. Though the eating is picnic table style, and people freely come and go, it was nice to see staff frequently wiping down areas so friggin' fast in between.

I'm not a huge meat eater, but every once in a while I get a craving for BBQ. While visiting MO we figured this would be the place to fulfill that craving, and it did not disappoint! The wait, long, of course, but well worth it, especially for the experience of just doing it. The ribs fell off the bone, and had amazing smoky flavor. The brisket was by far the best I've ever had, and the pulled pork sandwich was absolutely delicious. The sides were all eh, but we didn't go for the sides. You go for bbq, and it was awesome.

Oh my goodness! This bbq food is so good! Their sauces are really good too. I really like the sweet new sauce. I ordered the pulled chicken and pork with the roasted corn and green beans. The chicken is perfect for loading tons of their bbq sauce on because it's not too flavored. The pulled pork was so good. The ribs were excellent as well as the sweet potato fries. You get so much food. I couldn't finish it all, but I ate more than I could because it was that good! The only downfall about this place is the long line but it is definitely worth it!!

Standing in line for ever at pappys again. As usual, walking in the door they are out of this and that. Same story every time. ..have never been able to try the burnt ends...I'd have to leave work early to stand a chance. Tonight out of be, ribs (really? ), chicken so far They run out because they create their own scarcity by never cooking enough giving the illusion it is just "that good we keep running out"....more like poor or purposeful lackof proper capacity planning They are good but they are not'epic' good or anything. The line is always long. ..again, not because of the massive demand but an illusion of popularity; they serve a decent amount of people but have just one (slow) cashier and two prep people at any one time. So there is airways a line out the door. That adds up to poor service and poor variety. I think in done with this game.

This place is insane. I am from Ohio and while visiting ST. Louis I talked to another family that was visiting the city and they told me they heard of this place on Man V. Food, so glad I did. The long winding line to just get in is mind blowing just like the food. We got to meet Pappy during our visit and we were treated like family. That was very special after seeing all the pro athletes that have signed the walls of this joint and seeing I was treated the same of them. This place is a 5+ star restaurant.

We waited for about 45 minutes to get in here, on a boiling hot day, with a 4 month old baby (who stayed in the AC'd car with mom while I waited in line, kept her cool..) It was worth the wait! Got a combo of ribs and beef brisket, and the flavors were definitely there. The rub, the sauces, the sides - all excellent. I wouldn't miss this place if I were you!

I like pappy's. It's good barbecue place to go too if you are an out of town, but I'm from here and this is not my go to place for bbq. The ribs had too much fat on them and the lining could've been clean off so the meat could fall off the bone. You got to do more than season...preparation plays a big part in it. I felt the brisket was a little dry...I'm use to the Texas style of brisket. I was not displeased with service or your sauces but I'm not sold on the best bbq in STL....

If you are looking for the best smokehouse ever, this should be on your list. Everybody we asked in St. Louis recommended this place and you will know why if you come. I tried the ribs, brisket, and pulled pork. Some of the best I've ever had if not the best. Variety of sauces on the table as well to meet any taste. All were smoked perfectly. The line starts early. We arrived at about 11:15 and ordered about 11:45. Once you order, the food come out almost immediately. It was out before I filled my beverage cup at the machine. The staff are friendly and turn the tables over quickly. Definitely come here!

So, my wife and I have lived in St Louis for almost two years and it took family visiting for us to finally get to Pappys. All I can say is that it was amazing. It definitely lives up to its reputation. We all had the ribs and now I am hooked. Our friends told us this was the best meal they have eaten on there trip to St Louis. We waited for about an hour to make our orders but it's well worth it. Be prepared to stand in line if you go on a Saturday. Thanks again to Pappy and everyone else for checking up on us and treating us so well today. We will definitely be back again!

This is good BBQ, not the best in the world, but worth checking out for sure! Price range is right on par with other good BBQ places. My lunch was $14 drink and meal, I left full and happy. Staff was very friendly. If you don't like to wait in line, get there at 11:00am on a weekday. I have been here twice and will go again when in the area.

Beef Brisket and Ribs are to die for. Burnt ends and pulled pork are really really good too. Tender and juicy. I also love their greenbeans, potato salad, and sweet potato fries. Atmosphere can be a little chaotic since they're always busy but nevertheless always a good time.

I feel like the last one to experience this amazing restaurant, but I came, and I LOVED it. It really lives up to the expectations the hype presented! I had a half rack of ribs--fall off the bone, delicious smokey flavor. For sides, I chose green beans and the fried corn, both were delicious. They have a great system for getting you through the line and helping you have a great experience despite the crowds. I will come again!

Good stuff! We don't often eat BBQ, but when in St. Louis, you gotta eat at a local legendary hotspot, right?! A Wash U student recommended this place to us and with all the positive yelp reviews, it was our lunch spot of choice. We arrived at ~12:45 pm on Friday afternoon. We got in line just where it reaches the inside. Waited in line approximately 1/2 hour, but I don't know for sure cuz it didn't seem that bad. It moved quickly, and once inside the general dining area, I checked out the food coming out and read the celeb menus on the wall. Once we ordered and were seated, our food arrived within 3-5 minutes. I ate my first rib ever (from my hubby's order) - it was quite good. The kids and I all enjoyed our pulled pork. I tried 3 of the 4 different BBQ sauces, squirting on a little at a time. My favorites were the original and the hoodoo/voodoo, which had just a bit of kick. My daughter didn't think the "Holly's hot sauce" had much flavor at all or any heat. As for sides, the Cole Slaw didn't impress, the sweet potato fries were good but a little over-salted. The most enjoyed sides at our table were the regular steak fries, the green beans, and the fried corn on the cob. As a whole, the main attraction (the bbq meat/ribs) for us was more than worth the wait. My hubby enjoyed every last bit of his ribs. ;-) By the time we left at 2:00, the line was well out the door and around the back corner. Glad we didn't arrive then!

I had Pappy's at a BBQ festival in NYC (I know, not the best representation. However, these ribs are so so good they warrant an immediate Yelp post). O-M-G the ribs.. the Ribs were so so good - fall off the bone, sweet and salty and sticky. The ribs didn't need any sauce. The beans were sweet and tasty, but perhaps a little overly sweet. I need to figure out how to get these ribs shipped to NYC from St. Louis. Can they please start offering shipping??!?!

I can't possibly say anything about Pappy's that hasn't already been said. I was there tonight for dinner and had my regular order, pulled pork sandwich with vinegar slaw and sweet potato fries. Early dinner at the beginning of the week seems to be a fairly convenient time to go as far as not waiting in a long line and having plenty of seats available. YUM!

Sometimes it's hard to rate a bbq place because of all the surrounding hype that comes with your plate of ribs. This is one of those times. Straight up- the brisket tasted great and had that nice smoke ring. Unfortunately it was rubbery. Not too dry, just took some extra chewing. I call this two star brisket. The ribs stood up better. I liked the sweet and black peppery rub. That came on top of a nice "crust". The meat was tender and pulled off the bone just right. The flavor of the not-all-that-juicy meat was smokey. Good stuff! Not the best, but I see why it is highly ranked. I loved the vinegar cole slaw. The baked beans were nothing special at a all. All in all a pretty good bbq joint. I'm going with a three star due to the rubbery brisket. The hype is great for the restaurant, but doesn't always tell the story.

It's delicious. Have I had better? Absolutely. Pappy's is an experience though. Where they lack in other foods, ie, coleslaw, corn, etc they make up for it with their ribs, frito pie and anything they slap their BBQ on. It's solid, but it's not amazing. You won't be disappointed, but you may not be floored either.

I haven't been able to try the burnt ends yet, and it's been so long since I had the brisket that I remember enjoying but don't remember it well enough to compare to other places. The sauces are the best part of this joint. BBQ was just ok. Guess with over 1700 reviews we thought it would be better. Food is well prepared and establishment is clean and friendly. Had ribs, pulled chicken and spicy sausage. Sides were fried corn potato salad and sweet potato fries. Tip. Order ahead take carry out. We were able to bypass line get food and out of there in less than 10 min. Have a picnic nearby.

This is the stuff dreams are made of. All my life I was like "what's the big deal with BBQ" And let me tell you: this is the big deal. Incredible. Just try it. I got the Frito pie with pulled pork and everything about it was amazing. I don't even really love baked beans and it's smothered in baked beans. Love those. Best pulled pork I've ever had. And I could drink the sweet BBQ sauce I smothered every bite with. My best friend, Toni, who is tiny got a huge brisket sandwich and finished it all. Hers was amazing too. And she got sweet potato fries that were the bomb as well. The only complaint is that they were out of burnt ends. But really, that just gives me a reason to come back and make sure that I get there earlier! Can't believe I've lived in St. Louis for the last 21 years of my life and this is my first experience here... I've been doing it all wrong.

Im not really a BBQ Lover but figured id give it a try since that is st. louis specialty.. I got the baked potato smothered with baked beans and beef brisket. All very good just a bit spicy for my liking. But im a baby with spicy foods.lol The meat was pretty soft although i would have liked it shredded up.. But all and all i think the food was very good and flavorful.

Wow what else can I say! I had the half slab with green beans and fried corn on a cob! You heard that right fried corn! Firstly, the ribs were amazing not overly salty and well seasons and fall off the bone and not tough! I mixed it with their hottest and original sauce amazing! This place is a true BBQ! I drove out to the other side of the state a bit on a whim for a short road trip and caught a Saturday Cardinals game. On the way out of the stadium I hit up Yelp for where I could get some typical St Louis grub, and being on a low carb kick ribs sounded like they'd work. I'm a bit of a rib fanatic, having found the best of the best from Memphis through Arkansas and of course here in my hometown KCMO. Pappy's wasn't too busy when I arrived but the parking lot was pretty well packed. Lots of "don't leave stuff in your car" signs gives you that St Louis vibe. Mondo smoker out front told me I was in the right place, even if the sign pointed me to the wrong door. Inside they have that "get in line, get your order straight before you talk to us" vibe and even a sign saying it outright... not sure if they deserve that sort of vibe, but again, it was slow in the mid-afternoon so maybe when it's out the door they need to keep it moving. The ribs were very good, some of the best I've had anywhere. Obviously a St. Louis cut spare rib (baby-backs aren't even a thing in this town, are they?). I asked for them dry, and got two servings of green beans (slick with delicious oil!). I sampled little spots of their various sauces and found the voodoo to my liking with a good heat that sticks on the back of your tongue for a while. I really realized I was a rib junkie for the first time here, as I was picking my teeth with floss sticks I keep in the car for when I'm eating ribs. So take it from a rib addict: this place has a good rack.

Pappy's is St. Louis's bread and butter and their food is just awe-some! :) if you come here lunch or dinner time they usually have long lines, and weekends even worse, so plan accordingly. I'd recommend ribs, always ribs for me when I go for the first time, and it will not disappoint. platter I'd recommend pork and beef brisket, both are divine. 2 sides I'd recommend sweet potato fries, potato salad, and maybe slaw and fried corn on a cob if you go with someone else. I usually just get water (free), but there's soda too ($2.25). Fitz's root beer is unstoppable. overall, I'd recommend Pappy's to everyone first time in St Louis!

These incompetent idiots DOUBLE CHARGED US for our meal. When you order at a place like this, that means you're overcharged by $50!!!! We asked for a credit receipt of our order to verify that our charge was revoked, but the waitress said that it's "taken cared of." What kind of incompetence is this? Straight up LIED TO OUR FACE. And this was for a road trip, so we won't be able to circle back around to this location. Absolutely pathetic.

We moved down from Chicago to St. Louis in August. My mother & father in law came down to visit and help us unpack & paint our new apartment. Trying to be a good son in law, I ordered Pappy's take out for lunch. And the take out is the secret. If you go Pappy's planning to dine-in, you'll often have to wait in line for more than an hour. And it's totally worth it. But if you here, order ahead, drive and pick up your food right away. We walked right in, past the long, hungry, winding line, and walked out with brisket and pulled chicken. Too bad they don't sell a 12 pack of Lone Star beer to go with it. One thing, for the sides, I recommend the green beans and baked beans. While the fried corn on the cobb sounds great in theory, its mediocre in practice. But of course, the meat is attraction and its fantastic barbecue. I'd go a thousand times if I could.

Excellent BBQ and hte people are SUPER friendly. My only complaint is it's usually so busy that it's a little rushed - your food appears almost as soon as you sit down (awesome if you're hungry) but then you're basically expected to leave as soon as you're done. Not a huge issue, and they're never rude or pushy about it, but it's definitely not a relaxing experience!

I most certainly got lucky with the short wait and got ribs right before they added them to white board! The ribs were absolutely amazing, a must try when in town! I got the slaw (vinager based) and fried corn and added a spicy sausage. I would have loved to try the chicken, but they were out. We visited St. Louis 2 weeks ago and Pappy's was so amazing that I am trying not to get saliva all over my keyboard. OMG! The ribs! The brisket! The chicken! The frito pie! Great sweet potato pies, terrific baked beans and fabulous sauces too. The staff was really nice and we were lucky to come there on a Monday rather than on the weekend before anything was even sold out. Actually, the burnt ends were gone but who cares if you can eat those ribs! I wish we had places anywhere half as good as Pappy's on Long Island or even in New York but alas, that isn't happening - although the baby back ribs at Houston's and even Costco aren't too shabby! I left with a huge smile on my face, tighter pants, a cute T-shirt and several bottles of their BBQ sauce which I brought back for my family. I don't know when I will be back in St. Louis but I know Pappy's will be one of the places we will certainly go back to!

I was disappointed that they were out of burnt ends and beef brisket when we arrived at 6.15 on a Tuesday. Waited in a short line to get in. Then most of us got ribs, some got the bbq pork. The green beans were fresh, crispy, and a bit spicy but perfect. The vinegar slaw was refreshing and delicious. BUT the ribs were the best I have ever had. AND I didn't use any bbq sauce when I say that. They were deep smoked and the rub was amazing. I did eventually use some sauce, which they have 4 kinds of on the table. So good. At about 7pm they ran out of food and put up the closed sign so it was a bit quiet after that. As long as I got my food I was happy.

The vow I made a few weeks earlier to try and cut back on meat consumption died the moment I sank my teeth into the ribs at Pappy's. Oh, the things that happened in that moment...but rewind a bit. Arrived around 5pm on a Thursday for an early dinner because we heard they start running out of the good stuff. We waited around 30ish minutes before we made it to the front of the line. Loved the reassuring tips hanging from the ceiling! (Something along the lines of not to worry about finding a table because they will find one for you.) The fried corn on the cob was really good except for the kernels sticking to my teeth like super glue. Their ribs are cooked so perfectly: melts off the bone, juicy and flavorful equally on the inside and outside, and tender. I didn't have much of the pulled pork + burnt ends combo (we seriously were eating with our eyes...so much food) but it wasn't as memorable. St. Louis, you done did good.

Best ribs I've ever had. They beat out Fat Matt's in ATL for me. Granted, I smelled like I'd taken a smoke bath inside their smoker after I left but that's how I like it. Big whiffs of glorious memories of those damn good ribs throughout my day. Their ribs are really properly meaty, but not overly fatty, BUT still fall off the bone and tender. So flavorful and properly dry rubbed (not over salted). Their bbq sauces are on the tangy vinegar side, which I liked, and then they had their sugar molasses style sweet sauce as well (my friend's favorite). We also got an order of their burnt ends and these also topped the list for best burnt ends I've ever had. They weren't just square, hard and chewy chunks of ends, they were a hodgepodge of pulled meat and chunks in a monstrous pile. Flipping amazing. It basically reminded me of pulled ribs. Shoot me in the butt. It's the kind of glorious meat pile that makes you say crazy stuff like that. The fries were good. The fried corn was good. But who cares about anything else but the ribs? Oh shoot, the bread. I forgot about the bread. After taking a bite of their bread (with a bite of the ribs), I understood why I saw so many glisteningly beautiful buns of sandwiches on everybody's table. It's like a delicious sweet white wonder bread but actually better, and it compliments the salty ribs SO WELL. I started making burnt end sandwiches midway through my ribs and ate them, moaning. I hate that I live 8 hours away.

First time here and now I see what all the hype is about. Got here at 12:30 on a Monday expecting a long line and there was only about 10 people a head of us, and the line moved quick. Ordered 1/2 slab of ribs which were equal to the best I ever had after I Found a sauce to my liking. The beans were sweet and good but to watery and needed more onions. Potato salad was good, not great. Wife got the BBQ baked potato with burned ends in it and it was the LARGEST potato we had ever seen. She didn't care for the BBQ beans around it, but I would probably get this next time (YUM). Not sure how they cooked a beast this big where it was so good, actually done and moist, but good job. Wish they would have had a cold brew I could washed everything down with, but not a deal breaker.

I have eaten at Pappy's a couple of times now. Get their early if you want to avoid the cue which is my pet gripe about visiting Pappy's as standing in the sun next to trash cans gets old and stinky very quickly in July (nothing says good BBQ like the smell of garbage crud on asphalt). I cannot understand why they only have one point of purchase with all the seating they have they could speed things up by adding another till (unless that is part of the plan). I have had the brisket and the ribs and the ribs so far have been better. The brisket both times I have had it has been a bit over smoked and had that burnt plastic taste. The ribs were great and the additional sauce on the table was not necessary. With regards to price...what can I say this is not a value for money joint you are paying for the brand and some smoke.

I can't believe I'm admitting this, but....this place didn't really grab my attention until I heard about how many celebrities have been here (and raved about it!). From the Counting Crows to the Wolverine, they got a celebrity gallery in the place. And now, the food - very delicious, generous portions (even though you still pay a lot but very reasonable), and the different kinds of sauce they offer you at your table! I usually take or leave BBQ, but this is definitely no exception! Pappy's rocks!!! Oh, and despite of the no-talent rapper Spose getting robbed - I assure you the place is safe and the surroundings are fine. He was probably stupid enough to not lock his stuff and make them visible for other people.

Every time I go to St. Louis this is a MUST HAVE! If you love Ribs, there is not many places better in the world. Small building located in downtown St. Louis. They just expanded the building and making rush hour traffic much better. Parking is very painful. But the food OMG the food. I have not had anything from Pappy's that I have not liked. Deep fried corn, sweet potato fries, Frito pies. They only make a certain amount of meat a day and once it is gone, then you are out of luck! Week days are the best time to go. Weekends... might as well bring yourself a chair, cause you will be waiting.

This place, yet again, got my attention on the cable tv show Man Vs Food, so we just had to drop in to find out what the fuss was all about. Doing our research as we do, we found out that this place can get busy & run out of food fairly quickly. We got there before it started serving food, so we thought all was good & looked like about 40 people were lined out the door. About 45 minutes later we were finally in the front door, however then we found the remaining line which did a few loops within the building with word from the kitchen that they started running out of food (the stress then starts to build up, but we have come so FAR!!!!). We finally get to the front counter approximately 1 hour & 45 minutes from when we initially lined up. We place our order and pray to God that this better be worth the wait. I ordered the pulled pork which came with some Texas toast, and also grabbed a side of greens & fried corn on the cob. About 5 minutes later, my name is called and I am ready to dig in. Unfortunately the wait was so worth it & wanted to return the following day to join that queue. OMG was it good. The food just melted in your mouth. The staff were very courteous & helpful. Even the BBQ pit master was floating around speaking with the patrons. This place is a must for St Louis tourists but as I was hinted towards, please get there early!!!

Good, but not great. Excellent people and competitively good BBQ. This is a great place for a meal with some St. Louis history. But as far as BBQ goes, this city has a lot of contenders. There's a lot to be said about a place that consistently has lines running out the door. Our group of 6 went around 4pm on a Saturday and waited about 45 mins (worth it). My last visit, I got the half rack ribs with Sweet Potato Fries and Potato Salad. The ribs were sublime, smoked to perfection! Hands down outshined other items I tried that day. The sauce provided on the picnic tables that pair with the meats are on the sweet side that range from plain sweet (think honey BBQ) to a slightly tangy kick (not quite Sriracha nor Tabasco). SPF were covered in a subtle blend of sugar and cinnamon, which was good, but a little too sweet for me. Potato Salad was on the sour side rather than creamy. Keep up the good work!

As someone who lived in Memphis for a short time, I've had a plethora of good BBQ, and I must say that pappys gives them a run for their money. While I prefer a wet run for my ribs, I was pleasantly surprised by the tenderness of them (it didn't hurt that their original BBQ sauce was beyond amazing). I also had their burnt ends (little pieces of meat cut from the point of half a brisket), as I've never had those before (and as an original Seattleite I didn't know what to expect) and they were fantastic, they melted in your mouth (enough said). For sides we had the green beans (cooked to perfection and while I don't know the spice they used it made they mouthwatering), the beans were great, the sweet potato fries and potato salad were a great compliment to the meat. The only thing I didn't like was the friend corn, it was a little too soft for me, I think the frying process made it loose the crunch you associate with corn. Final thoughts: while Memphis BBQ will always hold the number one place in my heart, Pappys is a very close second!

Ribs, you've met your match. I asked my friend who grew up in St. Louis, "What should I eat?" He immediately responded back, "Pappy's. It's worth the taxi ride." I ordered ahead, think this place would be constantly packed, but apparently if you order barbecue on a Monday afternoon, when normal people are still working, you can get your order pretty quickly. I'm a big fan of dry rub, and the meat on these ribs were falling off the bones and just. Fatty. Full of flavor. It was everything that I wanted in a rib. I got the baked beans and sweet potato fries as sides, which was a mistake, because I know I don't like sweet potato fries. Why do I keep trying to give them a chance? I think it's because I want to be "hip" and everyone knows that sweet potato fries are the cool, alternative cousin who wear faux leather jackets and keeps talking about fair trade coffee.

Pappys barbecue was easily the best barbecue experience I have had to date. I've had Memphis barbecue, Texas barbecue, you name it, and easily the Best I have had is Pappys standalone ribs. Sure the line is long but once you order in about 10 minutes your food is ready. The barbecue sauces are top-notch varying between mild/sweet and hot and rich. Voodoo plus Sweet was my choice for my ribs, Half rack with a side of potato salad and baked beans which were heavenly. Give it a try and you won't be disappointed

Very good ribs and sweet potato fries! I drive pass saint Louis and went there for the famous bbq. It didn't disappoint me at all! Hope I get another chance to eat them again! The price is very good! The food is very good! The service is very good!

The hype you've heard about Pappy's Smokehouse? It's pretty true. Honest. I was in town over the Christmas holiday with my family and my boyfriend was along with me. We were trying to figure out somewhere to go Christmas Eve Day and after calling around to a few places already closed, we found Pappy's was open til 3:30 and we had our destination. He's a big fan of barbecue and always up for trying a new one, so this was a no-brainer. We got there about 2 PM, and although Pappy's is located on a random street downtown near the SLU campus. Contrary to many Yelp reviews, the four of us waltzed in off the street and ordered immediately. Pappy's is quite big on the inside, and looks like you'd expect a good barbecue joint to: giant carved, wooden pig near the door to greet you, pictures of famous people loving on Pappy's food, wood, wood, wood everywhere - a very country, down home feel. Outside are two to four gigantic smokers where Pappy's makes its famous ribs (and other stuff) - we even saw one guy taking out prepared ribs while we were eating our meal, and what a show that was. Be warned that portion sizes range from large to huge, so splitting something may be a good idea. Between the four of us, I ordered the burnt ends (sandwich size) with sweet potato fries, my parents split the pulled pork platter with a baked potato and my boyfriend got the rib rack with fried corn on the cob. Holy moley! I got such a big serving of burnt ends (which were excellent, by the way - I didn't even need barbecue sauce at all) and sweet potato fries, my parents got more pulled pork than they could eat together and even my boyfriend was struggling to finish his ribs. Everything tasted great, and we were hard pressed to finish it. The only thing preventing us from going to Pappy's more often is its location: it's really far into the city to go just for lunch. That being said, though, for barbecue lovers, you'll definitely be happy.

The place has only been open since 2008 but it has already developed a cult following. I got there around 11:30am on a Tuesday, when they open at 11:00am, and the line was diesel! It took us around 20 mins to get to the ordering window, but after ordering, the food came super quick. The place was featured on Man V Food and for good reason, the food was awesome! The place has decent seating, but after you order, a hostess comes over and helps you find a table, awesome! I ended getting "The Big Ben" which was a full slab of ribs, a beef brisket and a pork sandwich, 1/4 chicken and 4 sides, yup that's a whole lotta food but I also ordered a burnt end sandwich and a spicy sausage sandwich as well. #yolo lol The Food: Full slab of ribs- the ribs are what they are known for and they are excellent. It's a dry rib that you add optional sauce, but I don't think it's necessary. The ribs are super tender and juicy. Went there on a Friday afternoon around 4:30, it was crowded and lively inside. Service was good, everyone was friendly. Our food came out pretty quickly. A friend and I ended up sharing a 2 meat combo. We originally wanted the pulled pork and beef brisket, but they had run out of the brisket. We ended up getting the pulled pork and pulled chicken, with a side of sweet potato fries and fried corn on the cob. The meat was very tender and really good. The sweet potato fries were delicious, they were probably some of the best ones that I have had. The fried corn was alright. I was not pleased with their bbq sauces at all. None were really that amazing. We were recommended to visit this place by people who attended Washington University and it was cool, just not the best bbq ever. I was underwhelmed.

Yes, it's good...but Im not seeing what the rave is about. They do an amazing job of managing the contant crowds and making sure the place is always clean. The staff is super professional and know what they're doing...very well! So, clean, professional, and organized yes, but write home to mom about? No.

Dear goodness, this place probably does not need another great review. It (and all of Missouri) knows how good it is. Having been in St. Louis for several days, I decided I HAD to try the BBQ before heading home. I asked my friend's husband for his picks and Pappy's was on the list, although they hadn't gone yet. And it was open on Sunday, perfect! True to the reviews, the wait was long. You enter through the backdoor to join the doubled-up line in their back hallway. A server only lets you in the actual restaurant if they can guarantee you a seat, unless you're take out only. You order, then take a seat and wait for some to call your name while holding a delicious-smelling basket of food. I waited about 35 minutes before ordering, which allowed me time to look around and decide what I was going to get. Being only me, I thought to just get a sandwich and call it good. By the time I got to the front, I decided I'd splurge on the ribs. It wasn't like I would be back anytime soon to eat them and they were a best seller. Thankfully, nothing was sold out. I got half a slab of ribs, the baked beans, and the deep fried corn. The food was delicious. The baked beans were amazing- sweet and tangy, with just a touch of spicy. Not mushy with a toothsome texture. Yum! I wish I could make them. The corn... I wonder if they were cooking them up in the back and leaving them in a warmer. It didn't taste super freshly fried and the kernels were were really chewy and kept sticking in my teeth. However, the flavor was really good-- deep, buttery, almost meaty, with the soft, sweet corn in inside the kernel. The ribs were good too-- not quite pull apart with your hands, at least not my hands, but not mushy like another reviewer mentioned. They may have been a touchy salty and I wish the bark was a little crisper, but what do I know about BBQ? Nothing. There were four sauces to choose from on the table- after tasting all of them, I settled on the Hoodoo sauce which was supposedly their spiciest and most flavorful. It was definitely the spiciest- none of the other sauces tingled my tongue, and it was very tasty. It was delish on the ribs. I must have been the only patron in the place who was eating alone; I took a seat at a window bar so I wouldn't take up a table with just me. One of the owners came by to introduce himself and see how I was doing, which has never happened to me before. He was super cool and kind; even came by again to make sure I had everything I needed. There was still a line in the back hallway when I left, but I guess that's the norm at Paddy's. This place is pretty darn yummy; I'd totally come back if I ever found myself back in St. Louis.

Whenever we travel, we often search for food places that have been featured on the food network or the travel channel. We decided to try Pappy's and it certainly is all the hype that everyone makes it to be. If you come during peak hours, prepare to wait in line for a long time. Luckily, when we went, we only had to wait 10 minutes in line. We ordered the ribs and pulled pork sandwich. The meat was very juicy and full of flavor. The pulled pork was just as good. The deep fried corn was an awesome treat as this was our first time having deep fried corn. Sweet potato fries also an excellent side dish as well!! The staff at Pappy's are really nice. There is parking in the back. Either try to come to early to avoid the long wait or go after peak lunch hours. Definitely will recommend this place to anyone visiting St. Louis!

Want some of the best BBQ STL has to offer? Then please do yourself a favor and come here. Don't mind the 1-2 hour line because it is worth it unless of course they run out of food until you reach the end of the line and you're about to order a slab of a riibs... Come early and get in line! It well get ridiculously long if you come during/after 12pm. Don't come at 3PM and expect all the menu items to be still available. They run out and they run out fast, especially during the weekend. They are famous for their ribs. From the bark to the tender morsels of meat, it is almost too good to be true. They have 4 sauces on the table for your pleasure but the ribs are slathered with enough sauce/seasoning that I don't find needing any other sauce. Get ready to be a little bit dirty. These ribs are not environmental friendly. I use a lot of napkins. As far as the ribs goes, they are tasty. Tender but not fall of the bone tender which is what I look for in a great rib. The only minus is the consistency. More often than not, I do get a great rack smoked to perfection but then there times where it's just okay... I went in with a group of 10 for a "Meetup" and they were nice enough to "save" a table for the whole group. We did cut in line but we did make prior arrangements with the owner Mike. I have eaten there many times before and they rarely allow a group to jump in front of the line, much less get a table which is fair in my opinion. Oh and they serve extremely fast. I placed an order and 2 minutes later (not even joking), the food came out. I didn't even get to my table before my food came out! Wow! Extremely fast but they don't have the option to be slow. The line of people never stops. And Mike, the owner of Pappy's is an awesome guy. He is always in and out of the restaurant and he literally greets everyone. What a genuine guy! If you are lucky enough, you might just get a sample! Be treated with sincere kindness a side of delicious BBQ. Service here is personable which I like. This BBQ joint will last forever.

Expectations are tough. When a place is like pappy's, it is going to be uniquely or unfairly judged. It is so much better than the average barbecue. I went expecting more of an upscale sit down ribs type place. It had more of a picnic table order at the counter atmosphere. Decent surprise as that means good prices and really getting your moneys worth. All of the sides were great. Sugary sweet potato fries, peppered green beans, and a sweet fried corn. The meat was sliced instead of shredded which threw me off. It also had no sauce but you add it at the table. All four sauces were pretty tasty. My favorite was the hoodoo which was their hottest but it also had good flavor. Not an exercise in goofy machismo. A manager or owner came by making sure we loved it! Parking was easy. The only reason not to try it is if you're a vegetarian. Speaking of caring about the earth, they slow cook their meats and close when they're all out. Sustainable and probably helps them cut costs. Win win? Unless you're trying to go late and they've closed. It's not my favorite restaurant or anything. Just all you want from a bbq place.
