We were visiting from Chicago, the land of all foods that are great.....so my standards are justifiably high. I generally do not eat Chinese food, and I especially do not eat the soups. Wow! We stopped in after the fireworks and what a HAPPY ENDING to the holiday festivities. They made the egg drop soup fresh. Absolutely fantastic! Then they gave us their hot and sour soup...IT WAS BETTER! I haven't had sesame chicken in almost 20 years. It was fresh and a definite crowd pleaser. I wish I could find Chinese like this at home!

Service was a little brisk and rushed even though we were the only patrons a little less than an hour before closing on a Saturday. But it got better after a bit. Patty is great. Took care of an issue with part of our meal with generosity. If we lived closer we'd come back again and again.

Great place. For someone whose mom is Chinese and impossible to please, mom was pleased. Lo mein was good as was the shredded chicken noodle soup

We stopped here before a show across the street at the Pageant. Great service from an extremely friendly staff, and also great food! Make sure to stop on by and try out the amazing chicken fried rice and some Japanese beer!

Pros: Best Chinese food I've found in STL; Awesome hostess/owner; Best interior for a Chinese food place I've found in STL; Reasonable prices; close to metro link parking so parking is a breeze despite being in the Loop. Cons: Bad bathroom; interior could be better despite being relatively better than other Chinese food restaurants around.

RESPECT for this quaint lil' place. Female initiated, owned and operated. This woman reportedly was the first Asian woman to begin a Chinese restaurant by herself, alone in the STL area. Although Peggy doesn't have my favourite food on her menu. If I ask, she will whip it up for me and I do mean WHIP. She creates the FLUFFIEST FUN Egg Foo Yong ever. She will put her on hand fresh veggies in it, instead of what's typical. I once had zucchini in it, adding an extra note of harmony into her mixed melody. I hate my Egg Foo Yong flattened thin and burned. Never here. Best Chinese around UCity until Shu Feng West on Olive along w. the 2 Drive-Ins Out thatah way. (all pretty good thatah by the way) Street parking is limited. Adjacent walk to lots and garages available, a bit of a walk. This place is TINY, be prepared to go early, and/or on off days. Lucky are those with patience.

Vegetarians, beware! Highly underwhelming. Based on the reviews, I assumed this would be a Midwest Mecca of tofu and other divine delights. Upon checking this place out, I was deeply disappointed. I asked if the hot and sour soup was vegetarian, since the menu says it has "no meat." The woman stood there as if she was ashamed to answer. There was an awkward silence. I then asked if there was any chicken broth in it and then she hesitated to say there probably was. Verdict: The regularly raved soup is NOT vegetarian. Okay, so I couldn't have the soup. What about the meal? Well, the also supposedly superb General Tso's Tofu was boringly bland. There was barely any sauce on the tofu and none on the broccoli. The tofu itself was tough to chew and due to a lack of sauce, was severely lacking flavor. Not worth $10. Due to a poor meal and a peculiar answer (or initial lack thereof) on the soup being vegetarian or not, I would not recommend coming here. P.S. If you're wondering, the fortune cookie had egg in it. Too bad, vegans!

Yelp didn't disappoint, this little place was cute and quiet. The food here was good (not 5-stars, blow you away amazing, but definitely good), and the service was prompt and friendly. Went off of other reviews and ordered both the crab rangoon and the hot and sour soup to start. Both were very good, especially the crab rangoon which was served with a blend of sweet and sour (the good dark yellow kind) and a very horseradish heavy Chinese mustard. It was a great blend, and paired with the crisp crab rangoon perfectly. They were also not overly sweet, which is a common problem. The hot and sour soup was great, a little different from most places. It was chock full of the usual veggies and tofu, though theirs is served without the typical pork in it. The menu said "no meat" which may or may not mean vegetarian, the soup did lack the typical meaty flavor that backs a good batch. It still had plenty of rich flavor though, and I didn't miss the pork at all. Best of all it had the thickness of a good Hot & Sour, which is the quality I look for the most. New to me, they topped it with fresh chopped cilantro. I might start borrowing this trick at home, as the cilantro added a great freshness to the soup that paired perfectly with the pungency of it. For our main meals I ordered the Hot Braised Chicken and the lady ordered Fried Rice, which she'd been craving. My dish was better than normal cheap take-out, and about what I expected. Everything was cooked well, not too hot or lacking seasoning. The lady enjoyed the fried rice, but it was definitely not the dark St. Louis fried rice with that slight "wok hay" we were hoping for, and which we can't get at home. I would say compared to normal it was a bit soft, as if maybe they'd used fresh, still-hot rice. Not bad, but I'd look for greatness in other dishes. All in all, I would return if I were nearby, but I wouldn't go across town for it. Lovely neighborhood stop though, and worth a shot!

Tried to use PAID value on an expired groupon after class last Friday. Was rudely greeted and told I could not use it. I literally highlighted in pink neon on printed voucher and showed on my iPhone app how it had not been confirmed redeemed to prove that the PAID value is always good. Then the woman told me I'd have to order at least $25 worth of food which was not even part of the original PROMO groupon, Refused service to me with $6 paid value. This was my first time here; will never try this place again. They didn't even try to help.

Chinese Noodle Cafe has been my family's go to place for countless special occasion dinners and casual times as well. The food is consistently excellent and does not use MSG. This restaurant made me love hot and sour soup and I have yet to find another that even comes close to the flavor of theirs. Peggy the owner always comes around to your table, plays with the babies, and is so friendly. My family just moved back to the St. Louis area and Chinese Noodle Cafe is at the top of our list of places to go!

I've been trying to find a decent Chinese food place by my house for a while now. This place is not it. I thought by the reviews that it may be decent but I was highly disappointed. I will say that the crab rangoons were good but that's it. Got general tsao's chicken and fried rice. Neither of them were good :(

Hands down the best Chinese in STL. I came here the first time today for lunch. Peggy greeted my friend and I warmly and was so welcoming. We got take-out, and were a bit delayed due to construction. Peggy was really appreciative that we fought off the delay and even gave us free fried rice! Now to the food. Amazing! Very very fresh and it isn't covered up with tons of sauce like most Chinese restaurants. Instead, it's the perfect amount that compliments the vegetables and meat. We got the beef & broccoli and the seafood delight. Yum yum yum. Oh, and you must order the crab rangoons. The seafood delight had cucumbers and cherry tomatoes along with traditional vegetables used in Chinese food. I couldn't believe that it was all so fresh. I'm very very impressed and can't wait to go back again! Thanks Peggy!

My absolute favorite place to get Chinese takeout in st.louis. The hot and sour soup is so good I could eat it every day and never get tired of it, it's absolute heaven in a bowl. Peggy (the owner) is always such a gracious hostess, so stop in and enjoy!

  • Nicole C.

Food is decent, but over priced. Don't believe the menu prices as each item costed at least a dollar more than the menu price and the menu that came with the delivery had the same incorrect prices. It also took at least 10 minutes to place the order on the phone. Not because of other customers, but because the woman on the phone had to ask questions about each word I spoke.

I must say this is the best Chinese food in the Lou! I had their Hot and Sour soup, Orange Chicken, Beijing Beef, and Pork Lo Mien, and they were all delicious. I'll definitely calm back. And it is also conveniently one block down from the Metrolink Del Mar Loop stop.

Been to CNC several times and it's always reliable. The orange chicken is excellent, as is the fried rice and egg rolls. The last time there, (owner) Peggy comes over to take our order--always offering helpful suggestions--and she pauses. "You come here before," she noted cheerfully. Naturally, it's important for a restaurant owner to cultivate return business, and Peggy and her staff do just that, through a combination of good food and reasonable prices. A fun, casual atmosphere, and if the weather isn't too hot, you can sit outside at a sidewalk table and people-watch. Usually, there's Groupon available, so check to see before you go and you can save some additional dough.

We picked this place based on its strong Yelp reviews, and boy were we disappointed. We ordered sesame chicken, General Tso's Chicken, egg rolls, crab rangoon, fried rice, and pot stickers. Although the food was ready when we arrived, every single item was chewy - as though it had been overheated in a microwave shortly before pickup. Even the crab rangoon had a chewy, over-zapped texture. The chicken was frankly inedible in parts. I'm not a terribly picky person, and I wasn't looking for terribly amazing chinese food, but given the price and the the reviews, I expected it to at least taste, if not fresh, then better than freezer box chinese food. It didn't. We certainly had left overs. Too bad nobody wants to eat them...

I'm here...again. But for tonight, this place is PACKED and I was told/asked to come back in 30 minutes...I guess because we were getting my usual (2 LARGE orders of hot and sour soup, general Tso's chicken and tofu). I found that rather odd since it's winter time...WTH? So we strolled on over to Big Shark. Outside of that weird and random request, I'm still a HUGE fan and will be back in about 2 weeks!!!!

3.5 Stars for food: Hot and sour soup +Cilantro, fried garlic were nice additions to a classic -Served lukewarm -Sourness was there, but overall relatively bland, might have been temperature effect General Tso's Chicken +Fried extra crispy, great tangy sauce. They do a good one here. Pepper Beef +Well seasoned with good flavor -Beef tasted stale Lo Mein +Noodles were cooked well, nice and firm +Good flavor Average-to-smaller portions 1 Star for service -They pressure you to order more, it's not subtle. -They arbitrarily increased our total after we showed them a groupon. I thought they short changed me but after I asked to see the receipt they literally wrote in a new price over the old price. Cannot support fraudulent practices like that.

Surprised by all the positive reviews. This place is pretty mediocre Chinese food. But then again St. Louis is severely lacking in good Chinese food so maybe it doesn't get much better around here. Staff members weren't exactly nice - though they weren't outright mean either. Again all in all its just mediocre.

I stopped by Chinese Noodle Cafe one Friday evening while in the Loop with some friends, and to be honest with you the only reason was because I had a Groupon. I have walked by this place a number of times and never really given it much thought, probably because its neighbor (Pi) often takes priority when I am hungry and in the Loop. When we first walked in we noticed that this place was rather small, I was a little concerned because it almost felt like a nicely decorated dive. We were asked if we had reservations, which apparently is a good idea, especially on nights the Pageant has a show. Once we were seated we were greeted by a friendly woman named Peggy, who was the owner she greeted us and gave us a quick rundown on the menu. She was very friendly, and very outgoing. Anyways I started off with Hot & Sour Soup, which was explained to me by Peggy as being the best in the city so was immediately skeptical, however I was wrong in doubting her. There is something about this soup, it starts off a little sweet but then comes in with the hot, very good unlike any other I have had in Saint Louis. The table decided to split an order of Crab Rangoon, which again were praised by Peggy, she said she makes them fresh every morning, again Peggy was right the Crab Rangoon was good too. As far as my entrée I ordered the Hot Braised Chicken, which was served with Fried Rice and a Vegetable Roll. The Chicken was great, not too spicy but it packed enough heat. The fried rice was also amazing. If there is one thing I could say was how attentive the staff was, they were very friendly and welcoming. Peggy, always asked how we liked everything, she seemed to really care about what people thought about her cooking. Now when I am in the Loop, I have a new favorite place that I am sure I will be back to.

I have to give mad props! As I continue to document my food journeys, some business get a little squeamish when I break out the camera. It's getting more and more common for people to snap photos of their sandwich or meal. However, one evening in April last year, my desire to document actually got us a great meal! My father gave me a gift certificate for Chinese Noodle Café on Delmar, a quaint little restaurant across the street from the Pageant. While taking photos outside, the staff asked my wife what I was doing. She told them that I like to document unique food places. The two staffers took this as I was someone of significance reviewing their place! What happened next was a delight. They broke out the A game. We were started off with a "special" beef broth, filled with all sorts of goodies. Then we were given the crab rangoon. I was stunned. I love crab rangoon, but it was the best that I had in the city. So very fresh. Finally, our main courses came out. The misses had the General Chicken with fried rice. I tried the Seafood Noodles Soup. Shrimp, crab, scallops! If I was really a professional, I would have give them one hell of a review. But instead, I'll do it right here. We haven't been back since that day in April, but I think it might be time for another go. A very friendly staff and the food was so fresh and tasty! Heading to the Loop for a concert at the Pageant, take some time to hit up Chinese Noodle Café! And look like an expert!

Owner served us personally. Was very hands on and kinda pushy though she meant well. Gave us a free large bowl of soup. Noodle soup was good too. Food was delicious. Enormous portions. Decent decor. Gave us two bowls of rice for one entree.

What a wonderful food surprise. Reviews don't give it justice. Best crab rangoon of my life. The tofu was off the hook! Holla at Peggy. She knows the dealio son!

The inside is cozy, and the owner is super nice and friendly :) She's a bit aggressive in trying to please customers, but I think it's just her outgoing nature! I've been here twice, and both times the food was fine, but not spectacular. I ordered the beef noodle soup, but it ended up being nothing like the Taiwanese beef noodle soup I was craving. The soup was clear, the beef chunks were absent, and there were... carrots. Haha! For those looking for Taiwanese-style beef noodle soup, head on over to Wong's Wok just a walk's away. This style of beef noodle soup was okay, but it wasn't something I would order again~ The second time I came, I ordered peppered beef. There was definitely too much oil, , but it was tasty. Leftovers were great with more rice though!

Unbeatable customer service. Ms. Peggy was super nice! The food was fresh and fast. I had the orange chicken with fried rice and my husband had the broccoli chicken. Mine was sweeter than I would have liked, the broccoli chicken was better. We also had the crab Rangoons which were all good. They brought the fried rice out for my kids first, which I really liked!

I absolutely love coming to Chinese Noodle Cafe. The owner is so sweet and welcoming, it feels like eating in someone's home. I ordered hot braised shrimp- omg, the best sauce. It was spicy and flavorful. We also had the sampler platter. Everything is so fresh, and the flavors are a little different than typical combinations: there's more emphasis on the vegetables. If you hate greasy Chinese food, this is a good place to try.

Tastes great, doesn't upset my stomach, good value. Note: the owner will try to push their [gross] soup on you for free to help pad her tip.

Pushy waitress. I felt as if she was yelling at me when she talked. Food was so-so, okay at best. Lo mein lacked flavour. The cold noodles was not bad, probably the best dish I've ordered when I visited. Potstickers were just ok. If you want better Chinese food, go to Olive Rd. More restaurant options for better flavour, and surely a more pleasant service.

Chinese Noodle Cafe was really good! Quaint little shop with an relaxed atmosphere. The food was delicious. I went with a group of four and we loved all of our dishes! The crab Rangoon appetizer was amazing! And Peggy was delightful. She got us our food extremely fast!

I've finally found my neighborhood Chinese restaurant in STL! My boyfriend and I ordered some takeout on an unceremonious Monday night after opening our refrigerator and realizing that the extent of our food stores included: Bud Light, almond milk, and an old bell pepper. This is one of those moments in life where Chinese takeout is the only appropriate answer- so I hopped on Yelp and got really excited about this place after reading everyone's reviews. I ordered the hot & spicy soup, crab rangoon, veggies and tofu, and beef lo mein for the boyfriend. When I went in to pick up our dinner haul, Peggy (the owner) immediately greeted us and complimented me on my outfit (because you know I'm stylin' when picking up takeout at 8:30pm on a Monday... thanks for making me feel special, Peggy!). After rushing home to break into the food, I realized that she'd packed us an extra order of egg rolls! PEGGY YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE! The hot and sour soup was by far the highlight of the meal- substantial, flavorful, interesting, but not overwhelming. I plan on ordering this plus an appetizer next time I eat here, as it was really filling (lots of veggies floating around in there!). The crab rangoon was a bit on the cream cheese-y side for me, but my boyfriend devoured them and I enjoyed them once I squeezed some of the cream cheese out (I know, sacreligious). The main dishes were more or less your typical Chinese fare- the veggies and tofu came with fried rice, which I'm not super crazy about, but it made for excellent leftovers (for lunch on Tuesday... and Wednesday...). The Lo Mein was good, the type of food that just makes you want to wrap it around your chopsticks until you create a noodle lollipop and shove the whole thing in your mouth. So, Chinese Noodle Cafe, with your legendary Hot and Spicy soup, your enormous portions, and your adorable owner: I shall be back!

I have the first time been here to have lunch with my family. We ordered beef noodle, seafood noodle, frie rice with beef,lo mein w/ beef and lo mein w/ shrimp, they are amazing and delicious. The lady who own this restaurant is very nice. Good food, good people!

I found the food a little underwhelming. Less sodium laced Chinese food. I went in with friends and we all ordered different things, but I felt like everything tasted the same. Decent prices, decent serving size and good attentive waitstaff.

Came here with a Groupon. The server was kind. The owner was actually the one to take our order and she was overly aggressive and pushy. She basically strong armed us into getting an appetizer. She asked us about 3 times. She tried to get us to try the hot and sour soup because it is the best in St. Louis. I chose the steamed pot stickers. They were the best part of the meal. I had the fried tofu with veggies. It was decent. Not the best. The fried rice had no flavor. The atmosphere is cramped and very small. Pleasant enough, though. The server acted as if she had never seen a Groupon in her life. She was very confused. Finally, she took off the Groupon and the bill came to about $9.87. The told us they wouldn't run our card for that amount because we needed at least a bill of $10 for them to run the card. I asked if I could order something to go to bring the order over $10. This request confused the server even more. She asked Peggy (owner) what to do and she settled on charging us $10.75 to make it over $10. Stupid. I have no idea how they arrived at $10.75 We paid it. If for nothing else, just to get out of there. Won't be back.

I can't recommend this place. It's true, the folks who work there are super-nice, and they seem really committed to making sure that customers like everything that they serve. But the food just is really very, very unexceptional -- the owner has a $16.95 menu where an entree comes with hot and sour soup (emphasis on the hot!), an egg roll (one of the most unpleasant I have ever eaten - covered in a very strong mustard sauce), and either ordinary rice or fried rice. We ordered the fish from that menu, and what was served might have been good fish but it was covered- literally- in a way, way, way too sweet, gelatinous brown sauce. And the chicken in garlic sauce was equally sweet - very little tasted of garlic - instead, many mouthfuls of water chestnuts that seemed to be soaked in sugar.

Pushy owner. Charged for refills. Upset when I asked what the $1.50 charge was for. Special had little meat and mostly onions and scallions. Wouldn't go back.

I only give this place four stars because I've only been once and have only tried one dish. But I have no complaints! Came here after picking up free tickets to a show at The Pageant. I had general tso's chicken and I think my friend had general tso's tofu. We both loved our food, it was very quick and Peggy was super sweet and awesome. Left a big tip.

Still the best place in town for hot n sour soup. This is not your average gloppy soup served at the majority of Chinese restaurants. It's full of delicious veggies, mushrooms, tofu. The top with a bit of cilantro and crispy onion bits for an extra treat.

I'm with Julia W on her review of Chinese Noodle Cafe. The staff are sooo nice but the food is "meh". I used to come here a lot back when I worked on Delmar, but this isn't a restaurant I seek out unless I'm in the Loop and need a quick bite. The portions are ginormous! But the food isn't cheap, either. I just spend $17 on lunch, couldn't finish it, but had to throw the rest away since it would go bad sitting in my car. Can't they do some sort of lunch special with smaller portions for less money? Orange chicken does have real pieces of orange peel in it, which is is nice to see. I think most Chinese places just add orange extract to their sauce... so at least Chinese Noodle Cafe does it the natural way.

The energy soup is absolutely incredible. The cilantro adds a unique taste and the ingredients are always super fresh. They use all white meats chicken in the dishes. Peggy the owner is so sweet and will make you feel like family. Every time we decide to go out to dinner my daughters always want to come here. This is must visit if you are ever in St. Louis.

Chinese Noodle Cafe is fantastic. We had them cater for us for an event, and Peggy was incredibly helpful and willing to help our event. Everyone LOVED the food, saying it was probably one of the best Chinese food they had had. The General Tso's chicken went FAST, and Peggy's handmade crab rangoons were a favorite. The food was great, and everyone loved the event!!!

I read the reviews for this restaurant and was excited to try it. Unfortunately, it did not meet my standards. I ordered the General Tso's Shrimp and my dining partner ordered the Black pepper chicken off of the special, expensive menu. My dish was very sticky and just did not taste very fresh to me. The black pepper chicken was very small pieces of chicken that were fried and included red chile peppers. It was not good. The only good thing was that they brought me some soup since my dining partner's meal came with soup. I'm not sure what type of soup it was but it was really good! Also, the shrimp roll was really good. Overall, if I had to go back I would only get some appetizers like the shrimp roll and the soup but would never go back for any of their entrees.

My boyfriend works at blueberry hill, and this place is a favorite of his. I've never been much of a fan of fried rice, but he brought some home, and it was amazing. You can tell they use quality ingredients and I cannot wait to try more from here!

Picked up a chicken with garlic sauce to go ($9) for lunch today and was very disappointed. The taste was not terrible but the dish was 95% vegetables and about 3 pcs of chicken. The vegetables were very large and not cut well. I asked for white rice and they gave me brown rice. I think they skimped on the chicken and threw in the cheap ingredients. I think this was about the quality of a chinese take-out place. I even threw out the egg roll after a bite because it was all filler. Next time I will stick to the chinese restaurants I know and trust.

This was the BEST Chinese food I have ever had! The owner was there and actively involved. The egg drop soup tasted fresh and homemade! It was so fricking good! I also loved the crabby puffs and the noodles. Next time I am in town I will be back!

My husband and I stumbled upon this place because it was across the street from our hotel. The owner Peggy is as nice as can be and the food is amazing!!!! Everything tastes so fresh and healthy. We loved the chicken noodle soup, the egg rolls, and everything else! Wish we had one back in Chicago! Excellent!

Came in here at 9pm (30mins before closing) and received great service! I got fried potstickers as an appetizer and they were soo good. For meals: Mongolian beef and general Tso chicken. We asked for both extra spicy and thy were very good. My favorite was the chicken. Hot and Spicy soup was AMAZING! Finally a soup that doesn't taste like it was made from leftovers. You must get it! Also got the Chinese beer which made for a perfect pair! I am now a regular!

This is my new favorite Chinese restaurant in all of St. Louis! Thank you, Mong for the referral! Service: 5/5 - Very friendly, gave me a free hot & sour soup my 1st visit so I could try it and gave my husband a free one on his 1st visit! Server and owner checked on us often. Hot & Sour Soup: 5/5 - Best hot and sour soup I've ever had! I have the palate of a baby and can't handle spicy foods, but this has tons of flavor and the heat is there but mild. $3 for a large bowl, which I ate w/ 2 meals. Crab Rangoon: 5/5 - Ties with China Kitchen & House of Wong as my favorites. I love that they serve their sweet and sour (duck sauce) with a small dollop of hot mustard. Clever! $5.95 for 6. Sesame Chicken: 5/5 - This is the way I prefer my sesame chicken and not everyone does it this way. The cuts of chicken are tender white meat and lightly breaded. Not breaded into a deep-fried rock - just perfect. It's just the right balance of sesame seeds and sauce. $10.95 for a portion size large enough, I was able to make 2 small snacky meals from the leftovers. The place is pleasantly decorated if you dine in. There is some metered parking on the street (Delmar) in this area, metered parking across the street between The Pageant and Big Shark or non-metered behind The Pageant. Prices are higher for Chinese food, but I would not consider this your average hole-in-the-wall greasy Chinese food. This is best of the best! And besides, I made 3 meals out of my portion sizes! Their food re-heats well and keeps its flavor.

Ok, but they messed my order up a ton. When I got home from picking it up, I realized they had forgotten the pork in a pork and shrimp dish, and the egg roll that was supposed to come with the meal. They offered to deliver a replacement, but all they brought was a small serving of pork that I could then toss into my dish. Seems pretty lazy. Tasted ok though!

The food was pretty good, and the owner gave us free samples and stuff! The place is pretty small, but had a pleasant atmosphere. I would've rated this place higher if the owner hadn't seemed to be trying so hard to... please us for the sake of a good rating..? Good service is one of the most important aspects of a good restaurant, and that's what makes me want to spread the word and write good reviews.... but when it's so obvious that they are servicing you to get ratings rather than just to be good to you... I feel kind of used. This is just my honest opinion. The food is still really good, so people should still definitely give it a try.

Great food. We had sesame chicken, crab rangoon, fried rice, Lo mein, gen tso chicken, & shrimp egg roll...all were wonderful. Favs were shrimp egg, crab rangoon, and sesame chicken.

I've only ordered takeout but the service was friendly and Peggy was willing to answer questions. I didn't have to wait long for my food. The fried rice was good but I ordered the shrimp with garlic sauce and there was garlic in it but there wasn't much sauce and a lot a lot of vegetables. Okay, but I probably wouldn't order again.

Food was decent but completely ruined by poor customer service. Upon walking into the restaurant, no one greeted us so we figured it was seat yourself. However, the empty tables were dirty with food scraps strewn about. It was a good 10 min before the owner came to give us menus and offer us drinks (then we had to repeat our order for 3 waters, 4 times before the owner could remember) and to semi-clean the table. I was ready to run out but my wife and her friend wanted to stay after hearing the food was quite tasty. Given that we weren't too hungry, the three of us ordered two meals to share. The owner asked us if this was enough (with the underlying tone that we were being cheap). As a Chinese American, I am aware of the reverse racism that goes on in my community, and it's annoying. The waitress and owner were so busy kissing the asses of non-Asian customers that they essentially ignored us. Food here wasn't good enough to put up with the poor service. Glad I don't live in St Louis!

Best chinese food I have had in STL, I've been about 4 times and the food is always consistent. Its hot and fresh every time, you can tell they cook to order not just scooping out of pre-made trays. While the prices might be a little more then other chinese restaurants the portions are huge, one entree easily feeds two people or if your by yourself you have great leftovers for the next day. Chinese food scares me sometimes because I have had bad experiences but with this place you can tell the food is fresh and high quality and the restaurant is small but clean and modern inside.

Very good food, but I don't return as much as I might because the prices are too high and the owner seems to tack on "taxes" out of her head. And if you have a groupon, they're downright rude, trying to get you to buy more than you want. Hot and sour soup, broccoli with garlic sauce and General Tso's Shrimp are the best.

Very disappointing. We were so excited to try this place based on the yelp reviews, walked out 35 dollars shorted and unimpressed. Firstly, the owner was hard selling alcohol when we placed the order, asked us multiple times if we wanted beer or wine, felt a bit pressured. We asked her for her recommendations and went for the expensive menu for one and the Hunan shrimp for the other. They bought us two hot and sour soups when we had only ordered one. Inspite of all the reviews on how great this soup is, I found it too sweet and it was barely warm. The shrimp spring roll was served and I must say it was the best thing we ate there, fresh, hot, well done. Then came our underwhelming entrees; my Hunan shrimp was very vinegary, while I appreciated the veggies, the sauce was not hot or tasty. Hubbie got the boneless chicken, we didn't realize it was fried and with no sauce as we let the owner pick our order. The chicken was chewy and dry, it was clear it was fried way in advance. If you are going to serve fried chicken, let it at least be fresh and juicy. Overall, we will stick to our fave Chinese joint, lulus and recommend same to others. Not worth the try we gave it.

Terrible service, I ordered special fried rice with chicken no shrimp. My plate came back an tasted extremely fishy as if they cooked it with shrimp only to remove before they brought it to me. When I requested a new plate she brought cashew chicken with rice?? I ate 4 bites of rice and asked for the ck.. I left a $2 tip and she had the nerve to ask why I didn't leave 15%!! Never eat here!!

So I wanted to write a review that was unbiased with respect to service. No doubt the staff are friendly, but I really wanted to say more about the food itself. I ordered takeout with my boyfriend the other night. We had the sesame chicken, orange chicken, and cold noodles. We opted out of the $8 specials, because those plates sacrifice half of the meat for fried rice (and Ted H. is all about the meat). The chicken dishes were both delicious. They were nice and crispy and flavored well. For some reason, the bottom of the take out boxes had pools of watery liquids. This wasn't really a problem in terms of taste, but it just seemed weird to me. The thing is- this is what St. Louis should always expect of it's Chinese food. Solid. My complaint is that it's pricey for what you get. Other complaint- the cold noodles. They were totally flavorless and turned into a pastey texture in your mouth. Normally, cold sesame noodles are well flavored, but in their efforts to turn this into a new cold noodle dish with cashews, it failed miserably. I also had a large bowlful of it that could feed a family of four. Overall: pretty good Chinese food for this area (aside from the noodles) but too pricey for a regular meal.

Hunan Beef was extremely hot (spicy), oily and in general you could not eat it. The rice was old and clumpy both white rice and fried rice. I was so disappointed in the place. It sounded so good.

Three words: egg drop soup. That soup on its own is worth a visit. It's made with real housemade chicken stock (no MSG!) and the flavor is simple but rich. As for the rest, they have great dishes at fine prices, they're fast, and their combo meals are a great deal. The only negative I can say is that there have been a few times when I ordered a meat and vegetable dish that had very little meat and mostly vegetables. But that has only been a few times out of MANY nights of takeout from here (plus, I love fresh veggies, so it wasn't so bad for me). Tell the owner, Peggy Hou, that it's your first time there and you may get a free soup or appetizer out of it (she likes to make you feel welcome and at home, and her servers share the sentiment). Chinese Noodle Cafe is a fantastic little Chinese restaurant and well worth the visit.

Tonight I was craving some new Chinese food, so I decided to Yelp some in the area. I decided on Chinese Noodle Cafe, and the reviews didn't lie. I called in for take-out, it was ready right when I got there, and the women were quite friendly. I ordered the general tsos tofu, egg drop soup, and vegetable egg rolls. All of which were amazing, and there is enough for another meal or two. The egg drop soup is out of this world. The tofu is cooked perfectly and the general tsos sauce is spicy yet not overpowering. It had a lot of tofu and a lot of broccoli which was a nice surprise. I will definitely order from them again. Maybe less food next time though.

Came here to try the signature noodle soup per the name and the reviews. Could not have been more disappointed. Server was super pushy. Egg rolls were good bit the same as any fried pork egg roll. I ordered the Shredded Chicken Rice Stick with Hot Sour Soup under the Chinese Noodle Soup Specials section of the menu. The soup looked very good upon delivery. But the taste was super watery with very little flavor. The soup was lukewarm and nowhere near hot. The chicken was plentiful but tough, dry and flavorless. How people are rating this place so high is beyond me. The owner came by and I told her my thoughts on the soup. She said this is because it is healthy and she could put more flavor in bit that would make it unhealthy. Really?? What a load of crap. Really hate being fed bullshit on top of tasteless food. Oh well. Really hoped this was the one since I have yet to find decent Chinese food here. As soon as I find one I like, up turns a pot scrubber in the soup. I will keep trying.

Lots of good dishes here. I'm perplexed, however, by a chinese restaurant that doesn't serve Chinese vegetables. No bokchoy, no chinese broccoli, none of the wonderful Asian greens that are so easy to find at any grocer on Olive Blvd. in U-City. I have a half a mind to just bring in some real Asian vegetables the next time I come and ask the staff to cook 'em. Owner: don't condescend to your Midwestern clientele. Give us the real deal! Apart from that issue, good stuff, great atmosphere, service better than Tony's. I agree that the tofu dishes are especially good.

Hot and sour soup is great, as others have noted. And the sesame chicken is SO good!! It's the only dish I've tried because I can't get enough of it.

Any time I go to a concert at the Pageant I go across the street to Chinese Noodle, get my food to go and bring it back to the Halo Bar. Peggy the owner is such a sweetheart and goes out of her way to make sure you have an awesome experience at her restaurant. Their Hot and Sour soup is very unique and explodes with flavor. I would recommend anything. They do have vegetarian dishes. If you want your dish hot they can accommodate also. Bottom line: A great restaurant in the Delmar Loop for any occasion.

  • Sean J.

IN SHORT: You'll be hard-pressed to find better choices for vegetarian and/or Chinese food in St. Louis. Give this place a try! DETAILS: Being a vegetarian in the Midwest isn't easy. Most of the "vegetarian" dishes offered by restaurants aren't tasty, and the Chinese restaurants in the area, with their big buffets of tasteless food, are among the worst offenders. While I was down in the Loop, I checked Yelp! to see what the good restaurants were, and I was surprised to find out that the Chinese Noodle Cafe was ranked among the best. I had to give this place a try, and wow, was I impressed. First of all, let's talk about what this place is not: this is not a restaurant for easy Americanized Chinese takeout, nor is it a buffet. Rather, this is a place where a local Chinese restaurant owner named Peggy Hou has taken Asian dishes and found delicious and distinctive ways to prepare them. If you go in expecting to try - and love! - some new things, this is the place for you. Let's start with what I ordered: vegetarian Hot and Sour soup, General Tso's Tofu and a half/half order of the Spicy Cucumber and Spicy Sour Cabbage. I'm not typically a fan of Hot and Sour Soup, but I'd read that it's good at the Chinese Noodle Cafe, and I was not disappointed. It had a nice flavor to it, and the fact that it was vegetarian made it even more delightful. The tofu dish was fried and very crispy on the outside, giving the tofu the texture and snap of meat (though distinctively different from chicken). The dish was garnished with some anemic-looking broccoli florets, but I ignored them. The cucumber and cabbage are both tasty, and they make an excellent side dish. They also tasted wonderful out of the refrigerator the next day. My wife ordered Beef Lo Mean with some egg rolls. The egg rolls were tiny, but she enjoyed them, and she raved about her Beef Lo Mein. The prices are a little higher than a typical Chinese place, but the portions are large and easily shared or served as leftovers. The waitress was extremely polite and kind, and Peggy came out and introduced herself and recommended other dishes to try. It was clear from talking to Peggy that she is not just in this business to make money; she really enjoys receiving customer feedback and seeing smiling people. The restaurant is somewhat small, and while it is nicely decorated, it seemed a bit small and uncomfortable for a group, and it lacked outdoor seating. It wasn't very busy, either, though Peggy said they usually are fairly busy on the weekends. All in all, I would definitely recommend the Noodle Cafe if you're in the Loop. It's right across from the Pageant and next to Pi, so it's easy to find, and it's far superior to a Chinese buffet and has more character than a chain like Noodles & Company. Give it a try - especially if you're a vegetarian looking for some quality cuisine.

Chinese Noodle Cafe caters to a more American crowd and as a result, the food they serve isn't quite as traditional as in some other places but is meant to be more accepting to an American's taste palate. The best way that I would describe the food is as a balance between Panda Express (very American-ized, lots of fried food) and a traditional Chinese restaurant. The most common thing I order on the menu is the General Tso's Chicken. It's a decent dish. Some parts of the meat are a little disappointing--I couldn't eat all of them and some of them I have to spit out and just leave there. Also, I think the prices are a little out of line for what they serve. 10.50 for General Tso's Chicken? Most of the other things on the menu are a little pricey as well. But the flavors of the General Tso's Chicken are good and I don't see any reason to order anything else when I come here. I might have ordered the Orange Chicken once but I think it was a little too sweet for me. A+ for the Hot and Sour Soup. It is by far the best thing they serve on the menu. Not too hot, not too sour, but just enough of both to really give the dish some deep flavor. And unlike the hot and sour soup you might get at a Chinese buffet, it LOOKS really good with some greens and reds and whites. Peggy and the waitress are both really nice and give the place a really family atmosphere.

So I live just a couple of blocks from here and stop in fairly often. They make a great General Tso's Chicken that isn't just a bunch of breading. It has a great level of spice and they will even kick it up a notch for you if you ask...I ask. The ladies are always so nice and appreciative to have neighborhood people in.

The Thai curry soup is decent, however the Japanese fried noodle are burned a little. For the price, It might get a 4 star, but it is under par if rated by their popular fry noodle. And the restaurant is almost empty on Saturday night in this busy street? Something is wrong.

  • Tonii T.

When they first opened, this use to be my favorites mid-level Chinese restaurant. Over the last several years, the food is now about average... no flavor, good quantity. I had the kung pao shrimp. It tasted like boiled peanuts. The staff is always nice so I give them additional star. But I will not go back.

This is a real find up on Delmar. The hot & sour soup is the best I have ever had and the pan-fried dumplings are a must. Portions are huge, prices are reasonable and the service is terrific. The Mapo Tofu w/port was fantastic.

If you like delicious leftovers, head to Chinese Noodle Cafe. I've ordered meals here whose leftovers have lasted me at least three more meals. Crazy! Chinese Noodle Cafe, located in The Loop is a great place for Chinese food whether you're into classics like sweet and sour chicken, kung pao, tofu and vegetables or general Tso's, but it also has some good things you've never heard of either. I would suggest getting one of the noodle dishes (look at the name of this place) which are all pretty good. This place is very reasonably priced for the portions and is perfect for carry out.

I remember this and only this: the biggest bowl of cold noodles anyone has ever seen in their lives. It was big enough to fit my head into for a wash. It was bigger than a basketball (almost). It was as big as Dolly Parton's...hair. Anyway, it was also full of big flavor. The waiter told us it was a specially made dressing and I believe there's cashews in it, giving it a sweet and creamy flavor. It also had in it kim chi, cilantro, carrots, cucumbers and red onions. This meant it was both spicy (from the kim chi) and cool (from the cucumbers and cilantro). What a great bowl of noodles. Good thing there were two of us. We ate the whole thing.

The best Chinese food in the Loop. From the simple and chic decor to the FAST service, this place rocks. Every time I've eaten here the owner rushes to sit me down and take my order. I've never had to wait to sit or order. She also loves WashU kids and will typically give you free food if you wear a logo somewhere. I always order the crab rangoon for an appetizer and hot braised chicken for dinner. While crab rangoon never actually has crab in it anymore, it was still delicious. The hot braised chicken is un-matched. I've actually tried ordering it other places and been severely disappointed.

    (5)
  • Bob E.

Peggy makes the absolute best crab rangoon in St. Louis. Hands down. I have been going here for years, and while the food is amazing, Peggy and her crew always greet me with a smile and provide excellent service. The food always seems to be hot and made with fresh ingredients. The hot and sour soup is amazing, and the General Tso's chicken is just the right mix of sweet, savory, and spicy. And, to top it off, nearly every time I've eaten there, I've had leftovers -- to which Peggy will gladly add more rice, along with the friendly reminder that "now you have lunch tomorrow!"

    (5)
  • C F.

A nondescript facade on Delmar in the Loop gives way to a well-kept, contemporary, little Chinese restaurant. Heed the recommendations for the hot & sour soup; I don't even like hot & sour soup, and Peggy's is delicious! The Mongolian Beef was the most tender I've ever had. A little heavy on the onions, but still wonderful and tasty. Service was efficient and timely, but not exceedingly friendly. Several people came in for carry-out, so if the place looks empty when you get there, that's not necessarily a bad sign. Seating for a party of more than 4 or 5 will be difficult due to the layout, so it's not ideal for large groups who want to sit together.

This place has a bit of a Jekyl-Hyde complex going on. On one hand, I live nearby and have been to Chinese Noodle Cafe quite a few times. I cannot agree with the multiple awards touting this place as 'Best Chinese'. Too many dishes are striving to be average westernized Chinese fare. Also, for a place having Noodle as it's middle name, there aren't many noodle dishes on the menu. On the other hand, this place does have a few things going for it: 1) The hot and sour soup here is absolutely fantastic. I was never a big fan of the typical soulless hot and sour soup at your standard Chinese buffet, but when the owner offered me a free cup of soup (as happens often), I was floored. Obviously made from scratch with fresh ingredients, this is to die for. 2) The noodle dishes they do have are pretty well made. 3) General Tso's Tofu! Ok, I know that this is totally a western "Chinese" dish, something I don't usually go for. However, sometimes comfort food is in order and, being a vegetarian, I love that this is a prominent menu item. 4) The decor is nice and the staff and owner are great folks. 5) One evening I noticed a special not usually on the menu of Mushrooms & Tofu in Black Bean Sauce. I am a big lover of black bean sauce and this dish did not disappoint. So, I would recommend this place with these caveats.

I ordered delivery from here with four other people (as the website states, they'll deliver to WashU from 1830-2100), and was very pleased. At under ten bucks a pop, the servings were very generous and just the thing to satisfy our cravings for some American 'Chinese' food. Add to that the fact that the owner threw in some complementary crab rangoon, and we were all very happy campers indeed.

Chinese Noodle Cafe is now one of my frequently visited spots. The manager is really nice, and if she's not too busy, loves to come over and have a nice chat. The noodles are top quality and prepared fresh, with hearty servings for a super affordable price. My personal favorite is their cold noodles. Cucumbers and carrots with a spicy peanut sauce. Watch out, there's a nice kick to it, and it'll leave you full and happy. The place itself is kind of cramped, with only a couple tables and booths, so get their early. The wait time is pretty short, considering it is a made-to-order kind of place. It's definitely worth checking out. Be sure to check their hours though, they usually don't open until mid-afternoon.

I found a bug in my food and not only did they not apologize but they fought me regarding giving my money back. Before that a co worker found a ton of ants in her fountain soda. Dirty dirty place. It's a shame because the food is good. But I can't risk what bugs might be in my food!

  • Corey L.

I heard good things, especially if you don't want the greasy rice from the hood, but maybe she doesn't care for her black customers. Although it was not on the menu, I asked for a order of fried rice, only to discover that she served me some burnt rice. It was disgusting! What makes matters worst, when I took the rice back to her, trying to redeem my money, she refused to return my money. You think that because she is in the Loop it she would have some customer service ethics.

For two years now I've been on simple search: good, Americanized, Chinese takeout. This is not that. It's clean, nice, great portions but tries to be something more than Chinese takeout. If that's what you're looking for, this might get four or five stars, but if your just looking for the takeout to satisfy a craving, this is the wrong place.

  • Bill C.

Right now, this is my favorite Chinese restaurant in St. Louis. However, I just started going here because my last favorite one was seemed to go down hill. The hot and sour soup is not hot, but it is really good - just not hot. The pot stickers and crab rangoon are above average. The general's chicken and sesame chicken are well above average. Service is outstanding.

This is my first review on Yelp, I'm from out of town and just happened to Google "Chinese Delivery" on a hungry whim one night when "Chinese Noodle Cafe" came up with by far the best reviews. I placed an order, and after being thrown off for a second with a request to "no, forget the address, just give me directions", received phenomenal Chinese food delivered to me by no other than the owner of the freakin' restaurant. She was unbelievably nice, 10 minutes earlier than quoted, but more to the point, every dish was a win. I recommend General Tso Tofu, Pot Stickers, Veggie Lo Mein and Veggie Fried rice. If these dishes are any indication, the whole menu is recommended. Five out of five for service and quality.

The more you go here, the more you'll enjoy yourself. The owner / manager actually makes an effort to say hello, make recommendations, and make you feel welcome. I've enjoyed far too many items on the menu to list just one or two. But let me just say that it's so good, I actually learned how to use chopsticks just to slow down and enjoy the food more! For appetizers, I highly recommend the cucumber salad. It's got a fresh Springtime taste with plenty of vinegar zing and a dash of spice. I am a convert to cucumbers and this dish is the reason. I crave it now! The cold noodles are also amazing. The creamy sauce and rich flavor are a treat as a starter or a full meal. For entrees, the combination plates are a tremendous value too. Everything is prepared promptly and served steaming hot to your table. Don't let the small size of the restaurant fool you, this place serves up big Chinese flavor. Enjoy!

I walk in. It's a Chinese noodle shop! Does it have Dan Dan Noodles? No. The lady speaks to me in Chinese. She's a nice lady. She tells me that her Lo Mein is good. The lo mein was pretty bad. They just stir fried it with some hoisin sauce. BUT IT HAD LOTS OF VEGES! That's healthy, right? We talk it up. She's from Taiwan. Yak yak yak about Taipei and stuff. We talk it up some more. I mention how there aren't as many Chinese places near Wash U as one would expect, with so many Chinese people around. Lady: "I don't like Chinese people. They're dirty, rude, and cheap." Yeah... well... I couldn't argue with that... but onto other topics... She's a talker. A lot of her food would appease the Stir Crazy type people, I think. I notice that they make Beef Noodle Soup! I order some home. Holy crap it's not the traditional beef noodle soup. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. Again... lots of veges... hm... I think she's angling for the health conscious people. I didn't like it because it was entirely opposite what I was expecting and I didn't like the food at all. For some better Chinese American... try House of Wong instead. Nevertheless, the service was good, and the place was spotless. That makes it a two. I'm just never going to come here again. Things Tried: Lo Mein Beef Noodle Soup Things I liked: Nothing!

Peggy is such a nice owner and she treats students so well. I got a complimentary bowl of friend rice while I was waiting for my order! She's awesome and the food is super yummy! I guarantee that it's the best hot and sour soup you will ever taste.

Perfect for when you want Chinese food that's not too greasy or heavy. The beef noodle soup is very different from what most Chinese restaurants offer-- it's loaded with vegetables, some of which are pickled, and you get sliced lean beef rather than big chunks. If you're expecting and craving the traditional kind of beef noodle soup, you might not be too thrilled with Chinese Noodle Cafe's version, but I personally found it to be really tasty and satisfying (you get a huge bowl). Sometimes you also get some free hot and sour soup or pickled radish, and both are delicious! My friend and I ordered the mapo tofu once when the owner recommended it, and it was good, but I prefer a little spicier; I suspect you can just ask for it spicier though, so something to keep in mind if you have the same preference.

Wow, how disappointing. I had heard some encouraging things so I tried it on a Saturday night. Of course there was a concert at the Pageant so there was NO parking. Not their fault. But for all of the great reviews I was shocked when I got the food home (took me only 3 minutes), and revealed my dinner. Potstickers are so doughy and thick and flavorless. You know how most places charge you extra if you want fried ricewith your entree instead of white? Now I know why. You get your choice here and I got the General Tso's chicken with fried rice. Rice was bland and gross. All of the sauce for the Tso's had leaked through the styrofoam and was in the bottom of the bag. The egg drop soup had absolutely no flavor whatsoever. I hate to write this because I'm desperately searching for some decent Chinese in our neighborhood but this just was horrible. I hope it was just the night but I won't be back anytime soon.

Perhaps it's not truly authentic (I don't know, haven't been to China), but it sure is tasty. We're not big fans of Noodle soups so I can't comment on those, but the other food is consistently wonderful. I usually get the Hot Braised Chicken or Garlic Chicken and they're the best I've had of either. My wife gets the Deep-fried cashew chicken (which I'm pretty sure isn't authentic chinese) and it's by far her favorite in the region. I find the veggie to meat ratio to be perfect. Service is very fast (which is great for us with two young kids) and extremely friendly.

So many great reviews here already, I almost feel I have nothing to add. But, let me just say the other reviews are right. The place is great. The owner is nice. She will try to sell you. :) The General's Tofu is amazing, but my dish is a fried tofu with veggies and rice dish that comes with a veggie spring roll. It's a good amount of food, for $7 and some change. Love it! Right next to Pi. I'd never cook if I lived near there!

This has to be the worst experience ever, the owner was rather rude and a typical racist, very judgmental and arrogant. A friend of mine was a new comer and she mocked her in every possible way. Besides, this is a typical American-style Chinese food, how authentic it could be?

FIVE STARS. Easy. I have been coming here for four years now, going on five I guess, and I just can't get enough of it. Easy location in the Loop, never super busy (which I don't really understand but hey...), easy take out, good food. This is the ultimate "I am craving Chinese Food" destination as far as I can tell. I don't want to beat this one over the head in all of my reviews... but "real" Chinese food and "American" Chinese food... whatever. Take your debate elsewhere. China is a big place, there are many food traditions, cultures and differences as you move across the region, through seasons, holidays, socioeconomic classes, etc etc. Let me enjoy my food please, and this place has it. In fact, I thought I had already reviewed this place, because in my mind it was an easy one. I almost always get an on the house bowl of hot and sour soup. Is that not a reason to go in itself? I guess if you don't like hot and sour soup it isn't, but I will say, I didn't think that I did. And then I started coming here. And I can put that bowl of soup down in less than a minute if my mind is in it. It is the best I think I have ever had. Its not something I ask for, but right after we order, there are just magically two little bowls on our table. I think this is really nice. Then, the appetizer. I really like the pot stickers, but someone I always go with now really likes crab rangoon. Like I said, let me enjoy my food, I don't think these are Chinese, but I know they are really good. In fact with my distaste for crab rangoon in general, I think Peggy makes them the best in StL. Perfectly crispy. Still mostly cream cheese, but what did you expect? I almost always get the same thing to. Stir fry cashew chicken. It comes with an eggroll and fried rice. And the portions are huge. I try to mentally divide my food in half, then I take half and the egg roll home for lunch or dinner the next day. I like microwaved chinese food almost as much as fresh... I know, its an illness. But, also good on the menu, Empress Chicken, Hunan Chicken, and we went with a friend who got the Vegetable Rice Sticks Soup and it looked and smelled delicious. Service overall is a little in your face. There are not usually (at least when I go) that many people in there, so the one waitress and the owner stop over to see how you are doing. A lot. And they are taking classes on mastering the up-sell or something. The push the specials, the beer, another appetizer? Trust me, they are masters. And once it worked, I got a beer. Chinese beer tastes about the same as American beer. Its cute. It doesn't bother me, but I can see how it might bother someone. Also, every time I go in they ask if it is my first time there. Now, I am by no means a regular. Every two or three months I am in, but you would think they would stop asking people that? Again, cute because I go here a lot it is something that makes me feel at home in this restaurant, if she didn't ask I might be sad. The place is also always spotless! Which I can't understand. The staff is just busy bustling around, keeping things going, busing tables, tiddying. Its great. One last thing, I want to give props for letting us linger. We went with friends one night and after we had eaten and paid, hung out for another 30 min, and they were still super nice to us, filling our waters and sodas again even though they didn't have to. They may be pushy on the ordering, but once you are in you are treated very well. Try it.

Chinese Noodle Cafe is only my second favorite Loop Chinese spot (the first being Wong's Wok). But as it's my brother's favorite eatery, I have to give it props. On a recent trip back to St. Louis, my brother and I conducted a face-off between Chinese Noodle and Wong's Wok and their hot-braised chicken offerings. Chinese Noodle's was very good, but when you compare it size-for-size and dollar-for-dollar, Chinese Noodle just can't compete. But, you do get free soup when you dine in!

It's our go-to Chinese and has been since it opened. It's small -- maybe seven or eight tables and a bit of counter seating -- but all the better for service, which is impeccable. Owner Peggy knows how to run a restaurant. She's warm, welcoming, and remembers you after one visit. The servers are wonderful. Feels like home (even if your mom isn't Chinese). And the ambiance is just as warm as the owner. Also spotlessly clean. My wife and I have a "thing" about clean tasting food. Some Chinese can taste like tired oil. This is always fresh and the flavors are true and well defined. The wife should know. She worked in several restaurant kitchens early on and she gives this one a thumbs up. I'm an Asian soup geek and the hot and sour soup is the best you'll taste in this town. In fact, a cup is traditionally "on the house" even though I'm compelled to order more. I suggest trying the kiddie pool sized "Shredded chicken rice stick with hot and sour soup." It's a bounty of tender white chicken, perfectly cooked rice noodles and tons of julienne veggies in an expertly balanced broth for just under eight bucks. For that matter, all the prices are great given the quality of the food. And unless you're a professional eater you're looking at two meals per entree. Service is very fast, especially if you're rushing to take in a show at the Pageant across the street. Thanks, Peggy, for a great dining experience every time.

Ordered the fried rice and salt&pepper shrimp to share and its more than enough! The fried rice is the most flavorful I've ever had (other than my mom making it). The shrimp was also really flavorful. Going back to get the crab Rangoon! who knew st. Louis could have such great chinese food?

Okay. In my last review, I bumped CNC from 3 to 4 stars because of their sweet, endearing service. That hasn't changed--they are still lovely there. But having since tried a few more menu items and finding them just "A-OK," I think 3 stars is probably a more appropriate rating. I still love the huge crab rangoon, the hot and sour soup and the chicken fried rice. They're simple staples that should be done well--and they are. But the more dishes I tried, the more sticky sweet sauces I encountered and that's not really how I like my Chinese food. I'll still go back for what I like best, but I'll leave the saucy stuff for someone else.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in St. Louis right now. I especially go for the vegetable rice sticks soup. It is the biggest bowl of veggies, tofu, thin rice noodles and broth you have ever seen! And for $7.90, it's a steal! I haven't seen this dish on any other Chinese restaurants' menus here, but it's the kind of awesome brothy noodle dish I've seen on travel shows to Asia that I have always wanted to try. It's very fresh looking and tasting, and has a lot of flavor. It's topped with crispy fried onion bits that add a nice texture. It's a big portion and satisfying, but not heavy or rich at all. I always get it with a small side (not the appetizer portion) of the spicy cabbage to add on top too, which is Peggy's version of kim chi. It kicks up the flavor of this noodle and broth dish even more. It's great for your sinuses! ha ha The crab rangoon is excellent -- savory, not sweet, and virtually crabless, which if you're a vegetarian like me, is good news! You can purchase a half order too (it's not on the menu, but just ask), which is great if you're dining solo. I also enjoy the vegetarian egg rolls here, the (vegetarian!) hot-and-sour soup (flavorful! but not too spicy), and the vegetable fried rice is decent. There are a few unique vegetarian items on the menu, which is nice to have more of a choice than some other places. Peggy and her staff could not be nicer. They often give you a little something extra to try at the table, almost like an amuse bouche. The cafe is clean and cute and nicer than your average hole in the wall place. The menu is small, but so far everything my guests or I have had has been pretty good. Remember Magic Wok in the CWE? That was Peggy, the chef/owner of this place!

Could they be any nicer? Seriously, the owner and workers are always so attentive. Usually, I dine in here, but tonight I couldn't get my husband off the couch, so I ordered take out. Unfortunately, there was a show at the Pageant and absolutely NO parking. I called and asked if there was any parking in the back and they told me to just pull up front. And they brought my food out to me! Now, about the food... The hot and sour soup is great, the food is good quality (not blow your mind, but consistent) and the portions are very generous!

The best thing about this restaurant isn't their food but their pleasant service. The waitress is very attentive to your needs. The restaurant is clean, almost spotless. Their food on the other hand, I thought was okay. Their crab Rangoon was delicious and so was their fried rice. I had Tso Tofu, but it was way to syrupy and sweet for me. I was hoping something more authentic. I would bring my college friends here, but probably not my Asian ones.

Decent food, but really great service and giant portions in a great location across the street from The Pageant. The combo plates are cheap, $7.60 for your order which comes with a small egg roll and a ridiculous amount of fried rice. I got the hot-braised chicken, which unfortunately was just decent. The owner and waitress were both extremely nice to us, and gave us free hot and sour soup and extra fried rice. I definitely plan to come back and try to find a better tasting meal, as everything but the food was great.

I went here a few years ago and remembered it being pretty tasty. I've tried a few times since I moved back and just can't get into it. Their sauces are good, but I don't like how they cook their tofu. The staff is pretty nice, though.

Really good food. Super fresh ingredients. Lots of great vegetables, which I really love :) and a good amount of vegetarian selection in general.

Food was delish! My bf got the sesame crispy beef, which was sooo good! I got the fried tofu with veggies. The veggie egg roll was fresh & not that frozen crap that you get at the grocery stores. The egg drop soup didn't come with the usual crispy noodles. Oh well, but it was good! The steamed dumplings were sooo good & sooo fresh! Service was wonderful! It's a hole in the wall, & the decor is cool.

Chinese Noodle Cafe is one of the restaurants that makes me wish I still lived in St. Louis. Peggy, the owner, is just a friendly and as warm as can be. I've been the this restaurant many, many times and have never had a bad experience. The food is delicious! I regularly ordered the fried tofu with vegetables or the hunan vegetables. But the Hot and Sour soup is what really stands out at this restaurant. I've never had better. It's loaded with cilantro and crispy noodles on top. In fact, many times Peggy would give it to us for free if we didn't order it ourselves. This, in addition to the huge serving sizes is one of the reasons I've never left Chinese Noodle Cafe feeling anything less than full.

Is the food here very good? No. Is there better Chinese food to be found on Olive near 170? Yes. Did the great service at this place earn them an extra star? INDEED! Look, you can find much better Chinese food at many places other than this, but this place just looks so nice inside. And those ladies who operate the place are just so cool. I mean, they give you free stuff. They'll give you free stuff even if you're ordering to go. It doesn't necessarily make the food taste less mediocre, but it's at least a nice gesture.

Fast, friendly, clean and cheap. What else could you want in a Chinese Restaurant? I can say I have had better Chinese for sure, but is this Chinese good? Sure. It was plenty good the way that all Chinese food is. It was full of fat and salt, my fried rice was brown and filled with peas and carrots. It was Chinese that did not give me a stomach ache. I mean, how much do we expect from our American Chinese restaurants??? I have to agree with everyone here about the service. It was amazing. The women were just friendly as can be. They were on top of the serving, the water refills, and yet, weren't hovering. Also for $15, we got two meals, both with a huge side of fried rice, an entree, and a veggie egg roll. Find me a better deal than that off of a dinner menu.

It was a cold, cold Saturday evening and I was recovering from a post-Friday-night-of-over-indulgence-sleep-a-thon when the craving for Chinese food hit my like a ton of f-ing bricks. Becoming a vegetarian sort of took the life out of Chinese food for me. So much of the experience is hinged upon those deep fried pieces of mystery meat, that it didn't seem quite worth it to attempt it. I recently have reintroduced some fish products to my diet (Dr.'s orders), and would have killed the sad sap that got in between me and my sweet and sour shrimp. Phoned in my order and was told it would be finished in 20 mins. So, I attempted to make myself look less dead, got my roommate and carted our asses to Delmar. I fretted about parking the whole way there, it being a Saturday night and all. I briefly parked in one of the Shark bike shop spots (don't tell!) and ran into traffic so I could get to my warm, fried, carb party. The shop is aesthetically pleasing, which I am loathe to say, matters to me. Very clean and bright. And the owner was there, who knew my roommate from another business in the area. She was super nice to us and our food was packed, all ready to go! It was about 25.00 for two entrees and an order of crab rangoons. Pretty sweet! So, we scurried home, put on Edward Scissor Hands and ate like a couple of Romans. He ordered the General Tso Tofu, which I was delighted to see on the menu. We ate until we were full and sleepy and we huddled on the couch like gorged puppies, unable to move on account of the contentment. In summary- I was pleased. There were more options for vegetarians than most places and I would go back for the tofu dishes alone. I probably won't order sweet and sour anything ever again (I spilled some of the sauce on the counter and it left two pink stains that are still there!!).

Definitely best chinese in St. Louis, but also best food in general. I crave their general tso tofu on a regular basis. Everyone there is always friendly, we've never had a bad experience. By far my favorite place to go!!!!

This place has good service. We were checked on many times and the food came out quick. We started with the combo appetizer which is a great portion for only $7. I then had the seafood soup...it was definitely not lacking in seafood! But didn't have much flavor. I even added soy sauce but it was kinda bland. My boyfriend said the general tso chicken was tasty. I didn't taste it because I could see the chilli flakes or something that would make it spicy. I'd try it again with those reasonable prices.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
