Went for lunch today with a group of friends. For a Monday, the restaurant was not very busy-just a couple other small groups. Half of my group ordered the salmon dish the other half ordered pizzas. Funny the salmon dishes came out at least 15-20 min before the pizzas did. Made for an uncomfortable lunch with half the group eating and the other half still waiting for their lunch. One lady had to take her lunch (pizza) to go, it was so slow. Something wrong in the kitchen with the planning. Food was good, but the service not so much.

I'm sorry for the collection of underwhelming reviews, as the newly developed west edge of the Plaza deserves a warm and friendly dining location...but as other reviewers here have indicated, this isn't it. We actually found our meal (charcuterie plate starter followed by two different entree pasta dishes and then a shared dessert, all of it accompanied by multiple glasses of wine) pretty satisfying (if, admittedly, stingy in serving size...the entrees, that is). What made the experience a "don't bother returning" was the service. Some advice to the owners before Rosso heads south faster than expected: Get your host staff out of the stuffy suits, and bring a quick end to their stuffy demeanor...they're the first impression you're making, and right now it's not a good one. Hire warm and friendly personalities. Train your servers to pay attention to their tables. Don't deliver entrees when the appetizers are still being consumed. Guide diners warmly through each step of the dining process: drinks, menus, occasional check-ins, dessert options. Our server violated almost every bit of common sense, as did the restaurant's host when he noticed that things weren't going smoothly. We are pretty tolerant diners, so we were more amused by the level of incompetence than angered by it. And I just don't buy the "we are new and working out the kinks" of it all. This is fine dining (if you're only going to go by the inflated prices)...you should have hired people who knew the basics right from the start. The bar was crowded (with Polsinelli post-workers, I assume), and the restaurant was full of what looked like a well-heeled crowd of people who were investigating the new restaurant. If our experience was shared by others, which I suspect it was based on what we witnessed and what I'm reading below, Rosso won't make it into the chilly month of February. Because of its seventh-floor location, it's a destination experience, and I've already twice rejected the idea of returning.

I had high hopes for this place. It was really cool inside but the restaurant is in need of serious help. My dinner was very small (approx 6 ounces) and crazy expensive for what it was. One of the people didn't get her glass of wine until after dinner. I would go there for drinks but not food. They need a reasonably priced menu and a service upgrade.

Great bar, view, vibe. Awful food. I am sorry to say that the whole experience was a let down. We ordered risotto ( mushy, tasteless mess) spaghetti and meatballs in a red sauce reminiscent of Chef Boy R Dee and a third rate strip steak (ordered rare plus) served medium plus. I can't see locals taking a second chance at a bad meal at this restaurant no matter how hip.

We went there last night for drinks and dinner. Great ambiance & contemporary decor. Really nice outdoor space when weather permits. Excellent service. The food was yummy. Would be a nice place to take friends. Will definitely return.

Nice ambiance, great decor, my cocktail was handcrafted. Appetizer served quickly and hot with plates and silverware (a pet peeve of mine so many do not) romantic atmosphere, I would like to comeback and give diner a try.

I just finished reading the reviews on this site and I am honestly in shock as to how I could have such a wildly different experience. I visit Rosso a few weeks ago with a friend and loved every part of the experience. The moment I pulled up to the building, I was excited to see that they included complimentary valet. As anyone who frequently visits the Plaza, especially during the holidays, parking can be troublesome. It is a small but nice touch. The building itself (both the hotel lobby and the restaurant) are amazing. The build out looks like nothing I else in Kansas City. I felt as though I was transported to a trendy spot in another city. I feel that this is something Kansas City has been missing for quite some time and I am glad to see that we have something of this caliber now. Our waiter (forgive me, I do not remember his name) was wonderful. We made fun conversation right off the bat and he was very attentive to our needs. We asked some questions about wine that he felt their resident wine expert would be better qualified to answer and so he had him come over and help us select a bottle (that was, incidentally, perfect for the food we were planning on ordering). Then came the food. All of it was delectable. The chef is clearly on an innovative path and I am excited to see what they will have the next time I visit. My friend had the spaghetti and the stuffed meatball, which was very memorable and delicious. I had the Pan Roasted Striped Bass. The eggplant was a very nice side to put with the seafood. We finished our meal with the S'Mores and Cheesecake desserts which were both delectable. If you have read the rest of the reviews, I would encourage you to ignore them and give this spot a try for yourself. I will be going back, again and again!

One of the most beautiful bars in KC, Bar Rosso is located on the 7th floor of Hotel Sorella. Providing a gorgeous patio, overlooking a pool and historic Ward Parkway, this is a perfect location for a craft cocktail, glass of wine or cold beer. Staffed by one of the best bartenders in our region, Kenny Cohrs, provides every person who enters his bar an amazing cocktail and an unforgettable experience. The kitchen also provides a number of lovely selections to enjoy while sipping a drink, visiting with friends or relaxing on the patio all of which will ensure a fantastic night and memorable experience.

My wife and I celebrated our 5th aniversary at Rosso. The food was fantastic. We started with a meat and cheese plate that our server recommended and it paired perfectly with the wine. We could not have asked for a better server. Christine made us feel like a king and queen as we enjoyed our meal, and dined overlooking the plaza from the top of Hotel Sorella. I would certainly recommend Rosso to anyone who is looking for quality food, and exceptional service.

Went to Rosso tonight with friends for drinks and dinner. The ambience is amazing; beautiful decor, modern seating and an interesting layout with a balcony overlooking the main bar area. That's about the best I can say about my experience. It took several 'excuse me's' to get a server to take our drink order, or to even clean the table. When my Bourbon and Brown arrived, I found it rather small and clear for a bourbon drink, especially one priced at $10. It took another 20 minutes to get the check (we had to tab out before we could be seated) and when it did arrive, it was wrong. When we were seated at our table, the service continued to disappoint. Our server was noticeably absent, seemingly unfamiliar with the menu (other than to say everything is 'amazing') and seemed frazzled. It took 15 minutes to get a cocktail to the table and another 15 to get our orders taken. When are food did arrive, both of my dining companions and I noted that the portions were quite small for the price. My 'young chicken' was good but for $34, I did expect to be more wowed by more that just a small breast and few gnocchi. The server offered a dessert menu but then never reappeared to take the dessert order. All in all, for $60 I expected more than a mediocre meal and even worse service. Hotel Sorella has some work to do to improve things at Rossa. UPDATE: So, in addition to being a mediocre restaurant with regard to service and cuisine, it appears their back of house operations are also sub-par. Is it standard for a restaurant to place a hold for your dinner bill on a debit card, keep the hold active, and then finalize the transaction over a month later? That's what the management of the hotel told me when I noticed two transactions in the amount of my bar tab and dinner check appear on my debit card statement over a month AFTER I had been to Rosso. My dining companions reported the same issue. When I contacted Rosso about this, I was told "it's how hotels operate". When I questioned this explanation and wanted assurance that my card was no longer active and open for charges in their system, I was told someone would call me back by the end of the day. Surprisingly, that did not happen. Just another reason to avoid this place until the management gets their act together.

Are you kidding me? Just terrible, don't bother. I've had better @ a hospital cafeteria.I agree with the previous reviewer. At best, looked and tasted like it came from a can.Bolognese? More like chunks of browned ground beef in a sticky mess of tomato paste.Yuk!!!!!!!! Lunch.Took 45 minutes and there were not more then 11 or 12 people in the entire place. No carbonation in my soft drink(flat as a pancake), scotch and soda, all soda, had to ask for another shot of scotch(requested a lemon twist) of course no twist. Loud ,disgusting rock music playing(thought I was in a cheap sports bar) husband had to ask for the "garlic chips" that were supposed to come with his "pasta bolognese" .This place is a joke!!

Had dinner with another couple that took over 2.5 hours because of the slow service. Most wine by the glass was overpriced, as was the food. Specifically, $40 for two small crab cakes was ridiculous. The lamb was poor quality, very fatty, and also overpriced. We did have a great view, but don't plan on going back.

    (1)
  • Tim M.

Seriously the food was not great, although the view was. Also it was extremely noisy and very hard to carry on a conversation. Plenty of places to try on the plaza, make this place one of your last options.

I just had my second dining experience and it was worse than the first. In short, the food is pedestrian at best and terribly over-priced for what you get. The decor is dramatic and not terrible, but the service on both of my visits was not even close to the standards of fine dining that the prices would suggest. I could forgive all that if the food was great, but, sadly, it is not. The seafood dishes were not even up to Red Lobster standards. The crab cakes were stringy and way too salty. The shrimp on my first visit were so inexcusably, overcooked you'd think they were microwaved on high while the chef went to the rest room. The lamb was incredibly over-priced given the proportions were not even appie worthy. The veal short ribs were fatty and tasteless for the most part. Almost all of our dinner companions on both visits walked away feeling unsatisfied and even ripped off. Frankly, I would not return even if I were charging the meal to an expense account. Save yourself the disappointment and go to one of several other Plaza choices that are truly worthy of your time and money.

Have not had the food. May have, if I'd been offered a menu. Just went to the bar with friends for a happy hour. First problem: chaotic set-up and no greeting. I stood around looking lost and had no offers of help for several minutes. Then I asked if we could get a table, as there would be 6-10 of use. I was told we could move table ourselves if we wanted. Thanks for the service! The waitress took forever to show up. Then took forever bringing drinks and taking more drink orders. There is no happy hour - no specials etc. We had to ask for menus and were given one - for the whole group of about 10 people. The beer menu is obnoxious. If you want to order a Bud Light or a Coors Light, the menu basically calls you a boring idiot. This place is new and they clearly have some issues to address. I hope they do. Until then, I will not be back.

I don't agree with all the hate on this place. My boyfriend took me here for Valentine's day. I thought the decor was beautiful- very chic and modern. Loved the fireplace! We ordered from the Valentine's menu- a four course menu with a dessert sampler. Every single thing we ordered was delicious. Service was wonderful- our server made sure we understood the menu and was quick to get our drinks. The hosts were welcoming and polite. The atmosphere was great- just a little loud, but it was very busy on Valentine's day. All-in-all, it was a great experience and we will definitely be back!

The kitchen closes around 10 so I grabbed a seat @ the bar and Carisa Lynch told me she could hook me up with one of their pizza's ... I took her advise and she expertly guided me to her special blend that they sometime make for her w/fresh sausage and wild mushrooms. She take what she does seriously and makes everyone feel special too! And that pizza rocked too! That is when I started looking @ the Wines by the glass and my eyes just about popped out of my scull....Michael Scherzberg is the Master behind this truly amazing selection of choices of great wines ! I quickly settled into a glass of Silver Oak, Cabernet out of Alexander Valley, CA '09. Surely one of my favorites. Then I started looking over the rest of the vast selections of wines also available . . . I could hardly believe the extent of genius that was before me ! Not an endless amount but a selection that had been expertly chosen and paired down to what appeared to be sheer brilliance. Now the Hotel Sorrella that contains this fine restaurant/bar has only been open since Nov. '13, however Mr. Scherzberg has already redesigned this fantastic wine menu twice now! So you start to understand the passion behind the man already. After Mrs. Lynch was so kind to make introductions I soon began to see just who this passionate and gifted man surly was. His passions and connections in the wine industry clearly run deep. One does not put together such a list of wines by accident. Next I tried the Siduri, (one of my favorites) Pinot Noir, "Bucher Vineyard", Russian River Valley, CA 2012.(Only one hundred cases produced.) This took me to the outer edge of vino orbit...grabbing a bottle of Siduri, Pinot Noir "Garys' Vinyard", Santa Lucia Highlands, CA 2012 (a gift for a friend, who loves this as much as I do.) And as I reluctantly pushed myself away from the bar, I wondered if Kansas City knows just what a gem of an establishment they have scored here with the Design, Staff, Selections, Location, Quality, and Friendly demeanor that is all to present here @ ROSSO. I know that if I can get back to this town it will because of this one fine establishment. I Thank You All...BRAVO ! Oh, they also have seating outside next to their outside/rooftop pool...too! Parking is also a pleasure, as soon as you arrive the talented/charming Lance receives you out front and immediately you know you are in excellent hands.

Loved everything about Rosso! We went April 25 to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, so we expected top-notch service and food. My husband is a stickler for a good table and hates to be seated by a waiter station or the kitchen. They seated us against the floor-to-ceiling windows so we could admire the beautiful view overlooking Brush Creek and Ward Parkway. Our waiter (forgot his name) was attentive and respectful. He described Rosso's cuisine as "modern Mediterranean." Brought us some pig ears to try. They were tender and very good. Can't remember our appetizer, should have written it down. But the main courses were both excellent. My husband had the green risotto, flavored with tender baby peas. He practically licked his plate. I had the Ahi tuna, cooked to perfection. Ahi is something easily overcooked and dried out. This was still pink in the middle, but warm, and the edges around the pink area were not dry. It's poached in olive oil to ensure it stays moist. It was served atop Israeli couscous. Can't remember the dessert, but I do remember we cleaned the plate on that, too. I love the decor in this restaurant. The white leather seats are very comfortable. And I would definitely come back for a drink at the bar AND on the cool terrace with the pool, overlooking Sunset Hills. Perhaps management has ironed out the kinks reported in earlier reviews. I hope.

I have created a Yelp account strictly to let KC know that this place is terrible. Went there tonight because we had a couple of friends in town from CA and they wanted to go. Trust me, I have no problem spending good money on good food. Unfortunately, this was anything but.. Do I want a Caesar salad to start? I sure do. Apparently you have to tell them you actually want dressing on your salad. I got a plate of lettuce.... For 9 bucks. Just a dry plate of lettuce. I would have said something to our waiter, but he was too busy doing absolutely nothing to come by our table to see if we ended anything. My girlfriend wanted a cocktail. She asked our waiter (who only came by once every 25 minutes) if she could see a drink menu. He said they didn't have one. She said "I saw one down by the bar." He said those drinks were only for people at the bar and not for people in the restaurant.. (Baffled) Next, my lamb comes out. Three bites and $38 later, it's gone and I'm still hungry. I just can't believe how little food you get here. Everyone else at our table tonight complained bout how little food they got, as well. Sorry.. Small portions don't fly in the Midwest. 2 bottles of wine, 2 "salads", and 2 entrees.. $198. (Head explodes) Do not. I repeat, do NOT go here. Do you know how much Oklahoma Joe's you could get for $198??? A ton. Literally a ton.

Trendy, cool looking hotel, offensive service I wouldn't even expect in LA or NYC. Stopped by on a week night wanting to check out the bar/restaurant area. The host barely spoke to us but pointed to a table where we could get cocktail service. We sat down and had approximately 6 folks walk past us without saying a word. When we finally asked a server if we could order a couple of drinks, she ignored us and started busing a table when there were tables that were still open. (The host confirmed that she was the server for that section). After 15-20 minutes of this, we decided to leave as there are plenty of other great places on the plaza to grab a cocktail. Never been treated so poorly in Kansas City. (Wasn't sure whether to post this under Rosso or the Hotel).

Just opened this week. Beautiful, modern interior decoration, on 7th floor of the Sorella Hotel, with good views. Friendly staff and a simple but good quality lunch menu, made with all local ingredients. I had the Sloppy Luigu, which was excellent. A few teething problems, e.g. drinks took too long to arrive, but they will fix these. This is a welcome addition to the Country Club Plaza. I'll be back ....

This place is awful. 1. Served warm white wine 2. Took 20 minutes to get drink 3. Salad was missing dressing 4. Service was terrible The build out also looks cheap

$12 cocktail. Ok, I'll bite. But wait....I can't get a server. After 15 minutes, asking for a server, getting ignored by about six staff members I gave up. I guess you aren't worth it after all, Rosso. If the booze is pricey, the service had better be stellar. It isn't.

My fiancé and I were celebrating our sixth anniversary, and from the gratis glass of champagne to the custom-prepared dessert, I was very impressed. The wine we ordered wasn't available, but our waiter recommended a fabulous replacement at the same price point. We were pleased to see it received a good review on vivino and was not overpriced. I ordered the Caesar salad and seafood mixed grill, and my partner had the duckling. Both were perfectly cooked and nicely presented. All in all it was a wonderful experience. It was gourmet with a personal touch.

Rosso Restaurant takes "date night" to a whole new level...literally. Located on the seventh floor of Hotel Sorella, the dining room houses some serious sex appeal, including stunning views of the Country Club Plaza, a glass-enclosed fireplace and sleek red and black decor. But it doesn't stop there. Rosso's menu is just as beautiful - featuring bright, seasonal dishes that look straight out of a magazine. Executive chef Brian Archibald goes for quality over quantity, meaning the menu is small, but well executed. Take, for example, the Sea Salt Roasted Beets ($12), a delicious combination of crunchy pistachios, sweet Cara Cara oranges and roasted beets in all colors of the rainbow. Hiding underneath is a goat cheese maple vinaigrette, a subtle complement to the earthy flavor of the beets. The soft, pillowy mozzarella Burrata ($10) is another appetizer not to be skipped on Rosso's menu. It's drizzled with smoked Miller's honey, olive oil and pepper cress. On the entrée menu, Drunken Meatballs ($26) sit atop thick threads of bucatini noodles in a homemade Chianti red sauce. It's the perfect pasta to recreate that "Lady and the Tramp" scene (if we're still talking date night here). And those meatballs. Pork, veal and beef put together in golfball-sized perfection. Rosso's most popular Kansas City Restaurant Week menu item is now featured on their main menu - the Barolo Braised Beef Short Ribs ($34). As my server Sharon said, "The meat just melts in your mouth." Yes, Sharon. The short ribs are incredibly tender. They're also accompanied by a sinfully rich polenta, citrus and garlic gremolata, hunks of gorgonzola and balsamic drenched cipollini onions. I'd say Rosso is a no-brainer. Sexy atmosphere, fantastic food, Sharon's great service and, hello, it's in a hotel?! Don't make me spell it out for you.

5 stars for view and service. 3 stars for food. There were six of us. No one was pleased with the appetizers. Bruschetta was a big disappointment, not really sure why the call it that. Caesar salads were odd too. Big chunk of romain with cheese and croutons on the side. Server said that chef likes to "deconstruct things". Entrees were much better. They have full and half portions. Everyone was ordering half so I did too so I wouldn't look like a pig. It was plenty and left room for desert. The bar and patio looked phenomenal. We plan to go back for happy hour soon.

We visited Rosso last week out of the blue because we were looking for somewhere to treat ourselves for the night and had heard good things about the place. When we were brought to our table we were immediately impressed by the hospitality, Michael their sommelier in particular. He gave us a wonderful illustration on the type of wine we were looking to drink, and taught us a lot about different wines and where they came from! The Spanish Rioja we chose was great. The dining experience was also a delight. For starters, the white anchovies on their Caesar salad were delicious, which also had a parmesan encrusted poached egg which was cooked to perfection. We loved the Sorella pasta and the lobster ravioli as well! A memorable night for sure!

Andrew, Rick and I came here because Andrew is the master of food, and we were not disappointed. One of the best meals I have had in a long time anywhere. We started with the octopus appetizer - probably the second best I've had anywhere. It was so delish, and family styled three mains (Seared Tuna, Pork Loin, and Seafood Pasta). The pork was by far the best dish, followed by the seared tuna. The seafood pasta was ok. We also had the asparagus side, sauteed spinach and the Brussels spouts. Both are fabulous. The menu appears to be seasonal and ever changing, and we must have hit it on a night where everything was humming. Based on this one experience, I would definitely come back, especially given the fabulous ambiance. However, I don't think I could guarantee that the meal would be this awesome once the menu change, so take this with a grain of salt.

Excellent choice for KC Restaurant Week! Dinner or lunch, the quality of food and service will hook you! My wife and I went here to enjoy the three course special dinner and found it to be a great introduction (first time here) and a great value. As an added plus, their participation in KC Restaurant Week gives back to the community. [Best kind of winning combination!] First on our target list for KCRW was ROSSO. nestled within the Plaza's Hotel Sorella. We were hooked at the KCRW preview by the slow Barolo Braised Beef Short Rib, along with the Citrus and Cranberry Bread Pudding are heavenly. We fell in love too with the first course introduction to the dinner. We both had the Ricotta & Lemon Ravioli although there were other options. Of course we both had the Braised Beef Short Rib, and it was exceptional! The wine list is affordable and varied and very well presented by our knowledgeable server. The dinner offering is also enhanced with a luncheon selection but I didn't try that menu. Strongly recommended. A great experience benefiting both the diners and a great event! Perfect match! Short time to get there for this special offering.

The ambiance set the scene for a great experience of love and adoration. It would have been great for the food to meet that expectation. The menu, although it reads with the sweet and sultry elegance of Italy the execution of the dishes leaves much to be desired. My salad was the gem lettuce described to be a crispy parmesan chile crisp with white anchovy dressing --- this merely was romaine spears with a fried egg with a boat load Ceasar dressing as the base oh and two anchovy slices on the side. An an entree my spouse had the Sunday gravy which was in his words stringy meat mush. It's necessary to say that our palettes are refined and know fine dining but also have an appreciation for experiences off the beaten path. The challenge with Rosso is that it misses the mark. It was like seeing the biggest box under the Christmas tree only to unwrap it to find nose hair trimmers. I had the lemon & ricotta pastas with crab. I'm certain this was the pasta that I purchased a few month back at Costco. Though edible it was luke-warm. We have moved this place to our happy hour only menu when they are not busy.a

This place is just OK. Great location and great views of the Plaza but the food is hit or miss. We went here the other night for a friends birthday - the restaurant decided (on their own - no notice given to friend who organized the outing) to set a prix fixe menue - at $65 per person. The salad course was OK but had very little dressing for the amount of lettuce given. For the main course, my wife had the roasted chicken with faro grains which was delicious but I had the braised short ribs with cippolini onions, which was as flavorless as my aunt's Sunday afternoon pot roast. Pretty much everyone in our party had similar reviews of the food - half liked their food and half thought it was bland. Very attentive service but for $180 (two people plus mandatory 20% due to size of party) neither my wife nor I have any plans to visit this restaurant again.

Went to the bar with about 8 girlfriends for our last happy hour of the year before everyone leaves town for the holidays and we had a great time. Happy hour is until 7 PM which worked for our busy schedules and the prices were great. Cocktails were only $6, beer $3, and food is half off. For wines you only get a house red, white, or prosecco for $5. The only negative is our server seemed over worked at times and it hard to get her to stop by or stay long enough to give everyone an opportunity, but she was friendly and very fast with our orders. I ordered the margarita pizza and was expecting some type of small flat bread since it was happy hour, but it was an entire pizza and absolutely delicious! I will definitely be back.

This place is GOOD....you are all crazy. I think that many of the reviews must have been from when the place first opened. (If there were wrinkles, they seem to have worked themselves out) Every night I was there the place was packed, and everyone seemed to be enjoying their food and drinks. I tried several things off of the menu and they were all exceptionally well done. It is a little bit on the pricey side, but it is more of a dress up place. Grown up atmosphere= Grown up prices Great view. I had nothing but exceptional service. Katie was an amazing server!! We never once had to wonder where she was, which is saying something because the place was standing room only in there. I travel a lot and often eat out and visit similar places to this...Katie (and Chad the bartender) made my experience one that will keep me coming back every time I'm in town

We had cocktails in the bar and dinner in the restaurant and I couldn't have been more pleased with the quality of food, wine, liquor and service (though the waitresses in the bar dress like they work at Hooters- what's that about?) I had a Bourbon and Brown that was very nice. In the restaurant I had an acceptable sauv blanc by the glass. Nothing to write home about but it was also cheap. We ordered the 6 piece cheese and meat slate for appetizer- I'm not a fan of stinky cheese but the pancetta was very good. I ordered the risotto verde and it was delicious! My husband had the beef tenderloin and let me taste it and it was also great. We had some dessert and coffee and baileys. Loved it. Service was fantastic. It is somewhat expensive but not ridiculous. The dining room is beautiful and has a great view of the Plaza. Highly recommend.

We are new to the KC area and have tried several restaurants around and have not been disappointed by many. This one is top of our list. We originally went to Rosso's after reading good reviews about the place. Coming from NY, it is hard to find an Italian restaurant that lives up to our standards, but Rosso did. We had the calamari appetizer, the cheese platter, drunken meatballs and the short ribs- all were fantastic. The delicious food and the exceptional waitress (Sharon) brought us back for a second time and will continue to have us back. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is due to the lack of a diverse menu. We had to order the exact same entrees because there was not enough of a selection. However, it was good enough that we will go back.

It is a split level bar with a quarter circle wraparound mezzanine. It has an eye-catching European style iron banister separating the upper from the lower section. Lots of red warm tones and an outdoor deck with an led lit pool. Music is a chill electronic lounge mix. The drinks are ok. I remember there being a better cocktail list when I went the first time. Maybe they have narrowed the list to speed up the service. This is a high volume bar so the drinks are more on the classic side with simple ingredients. They have a cognac French 75 on the menu, which I appreciate. This is the second time we have been here. They got hammered when it first opened a few months ago, but things seem to have mellowed out now. Great atmosphere to start your night off.

Rosso has debuted a new menu and it is outstanding. The Hamachi Crudo, Olive Oil Poached Ahi Tuna and Carrot Sorbet were all excellent. The food rivals Chicago's trendy dining scene.

Having just returned from Italy and the inevitable pining for Italian food one experiences upon leaving a country where food borders on religion, a group of us decided to have a drink and some dinner at this new addition to Kansas City. We arrived at 7:29 for our 7:30 reservation on a cold Saturday evening. It appeared the place was somewhat empty. We attributed this to the weather and relative newness of the place. We were greeted warmly by the host and we were offered the option of having a drink in the bar or being seated. Since no one was dragging us to our table, we opted for the drink first. First, let's talk décor. It's a bit Italian, a bit Vega$ and a bit Brady Bunch. Reds, Whites and Blacks; wrought Iron, tile and wallpaper murals; not really sure it works and I'm concerned it may have been dated before the paint dried, but a ciascuno il suo...or something like that. Now, I'm older than the average target audience for this "hoping for hipness" place, but the drink menus you are given should come with a personal microscope and a miner's lamp. The lighting in the bar is dark, burgeoning on electrical failure. Once we all used the flashlight option on our iPhones and decided on a drink, service was fast and efficient. Once drinks were consumed, we moved our table in the dining room. Let's be honest; the view is gorgeous, especially with the holiday lights on the Plaza and a gentle snow. The menu is interesting and varied ( hotelsorella-countryclub… ) and reads delicious. We started with a antipasto for four. It was fairly standard with nothing outstanding, except for the abundance of gorgonzola. I ordered shrimp and grits and for entree, spaghetti and meatball (yes, meatball. singular).. My other dinner guests ordered short ribs. I loved the shrimp and grits. I would go back for that dish over and over. As for the rest of the dinner, there just wasn't anything that we loved. Edible sums up the rest of meal. Nothing special, nothing memorable. Service was really great from our server. The runners, on the other hand, seemed scattered and twice plates were placed on the table and removed and put back on the table. It was odd. All in all, I think the place could be good. I'm not aching to go back. Plus, it's not cheap. Pasta with one (large) meatball was $26. Think I'll save my money and go back to Cinque Terre.

It's hard to put into a single paragraph all of the problems with Rosso. I've eaten dinner or been to the bar on five different occasions now, so I feel I have a good enough handle on the establishment to leave this review. The food has been alternately average (with the recent menu change) and borderline inedible (prior menu). The service has been good from some waitstaff and awful from one in particular (ignores you and very slow to bring food and drinks, despite being a slow day). The real problems exist with settling your bill with a credit card. My husband and I have been over billed by $50 on two separate occasions, having receipts as proof of what was authorized and the best solution the restaurant can come up with, and at a snails pace, I might add, is a dining credit, which we now have zero interest in using unless we decide to pay cash for the remaining balance to avoid inevitable credit card fraud. Best advice? STAY AWAY. FAR AWAY.

There were a couple of pronounced positives. It mostly centered around the cocktails. We had an excellent bartender who poured some inventive drinks. Really were top notch. I normally don't do cocktails, but the beer was a bit pricey ($9 for a Tank 7 in KC???), but the cocktails were worth $12 easily. We also had the prosciutto and muschroom pizza which was above average although not stellar. Now, the decor is really trying to hard, but falls well short. Another reviewer says it looks cheap and I'd agree with that, except for the very cool floors. Never good if you think the best part of a place is the floors. Probably would be fun in the summer because of the outstanding view, but it's just a bit overdone otherwise. All in all, we had a great experience due to some inventive cocktails. Without those, wouldn't probably come back.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
